Great location and view
The atmosphere is classy and serene, beautiful views, professional and funny staff. Wonderful food!!
The service was very knowledgeable, food was different and the view of the Legislature building from the restaurant is just phenomenal.
This is a superb restaurant, fine dining with a fanatic devotion to local ingredients. I haven’t eaten anything from this restaurant that I didn’t love. The staff are all super knowledgable about the food and where it comes from. The chef has come to our table to talk to us about how he prepared the food and why he prepared it that way. I can heartily recommend this restaurant.
Great service and of course great food. Very recommended.
Tasty food, great staff and great vibe. It has a nice view
A beautiful night out...tasting menu with wine pairing is a special trip through Canadian ingredients and is of fantastic value when you consider that you'll have the opportunity to enjoy 6 courses and 6 wines. Fancy but not fussy. Excellent service. Ambience is lovely with the legislature building in the foreground. In Edmonton, you'll be hard pressed to find a more intellectual and inspired menu. We are lucky to have Chef Downey choose Edmonton as the background for his celebration of all things Canadian.
Went for wedding. Hors d'oeuvres were excellent. Staff very attentive and friendly
Delicious Great view Great service Great food Pricey but worth it for a special dinner
Beautiful view of Edmonton’s river valley. Entire menu is locally sourced meaning you cannot have a lemon with your water as lemons aren’t grown locally. Cocktails were tasty.
So glad to have a place like this in Edmonton! Came here last week for date night and it was delicious. We tried 2 appetizers and 1 entree. Everything was beautifully presented and extremely flavourful. Would highly recommend the Bannock if you like trying new things. I personally found the Broccoli dish slightly too salty, but I'm not a food connoisseur. Very excited to come back and try all the other items on the menu!
I had dinner at the Butternut Tree twice now, and both were amazing. Great attention to detail, and all the dishes were well crafted and something out of the ordinary. And they worked just wonderful. I love the concept of sourcing ingredients only within Canada, and the waiter was very well informed and happy to explain, which made the experience not only extremely tasty but also educational.
Horrible service
Great food service and ambiance would 10/10 reccomend
Went to a friend's wedding here. Great canapes & awesome staff! I'm going to go back for supper now.
It was really good! But it is really pricey!
Before The Butternut Restaurant arrived. It was still the Copperpot Restaurant. One afternoon while working. A Semi Truck got stuck under the 97th Ave Bridge. And it was during afternoon peak hour service. Where everyone was rushing home from work.
If you haven’t tried this place yet you’re missing out. Best food in town and great location with nice views.
I had a really bad experience with the owner of The Butternut Tree. I had paid for a High Tea event on December 20th 2020 which I was excited to go to. Unfortunately the government of Alberta put everything back on lockdown just before the event was to take place so it was cancelled. I reached out to the owner to see if i could re-schedule or receive a refund. The owner indicated 2 additional dates I could re-schedule for, both of which I would be out of town for as I work a rotational schedule up north. He also indicated that i could receive curbside pickup which just didn't make much sense as I was charged an automatic 18% gratuity with my ticket confirmation. Also, to be honest it was the experience of High Tea that I wanted to attend in person. After politely indicating that I couldn't make any of those subsequent events and declining curbside pickup, I asked if they could process a refund. The owner adamantly refused, and in my subsequent back-and-forth emails kept indicating that all ticket sales were final and non-refundable. I was more than aware of their cancellation policy which indicated that there would not be refunds for cancellations (on the part of the buyer), but I couldn't understand how he could withhold my money if the event hadn't taken place. No amount of reasoning with him worked and in the end I had to go to my credit card company to initiate a charge-back. Even then, he made the process so difficult as he fought the charge-back. Thankfully I kept my email transactions as well as copies of the cancellation policy indicated on the ticket. The money was eventually returned by the CC company. If you happen to visit the restaurant, the food is good and presented very well. However buyer beware about paying for any event prior to receiving the service with the Owner (Scott Downy). His inability to be reasonable given the circumstances and withholding of my money while not providing the service indicated was very close to theft in my opinion. I unfortunately won't be back to his restaurant as it was quite un-called for.
Up and coming in Eddie! Nice decor! Great service! Good food!
You will always have surprises here!
I had a great experience at The Butternut Tree this past week. The drinks and food were great but the highlight was the service. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable without being overbearing. He clearly enjoys working there and it shows. We will definitely be back for more special occasions.
Situated looking out towards the Legislature grounds, this open concept restaurant puts a contemporary twist on classic dishes. Beautifully plated, the blend of flavours in each dish work even though you wouldn't think it. The restaurant offers a la carte and a tasting menu, both in vegetarian and meat offerings. The tasting menu is worth the value for the amount of food you get. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and very welcoming. A hidden gem in the city.
Excellent food and service
My fiancé and I went to celebrate an anniversary, this was our first visit and definitely not our last. It’s one of the few restaurants in Edmonton that offer a tasting menu with drink pairings, we love the experience. The view is great , and the service was top notch! You definitely get what you pay for, I can’t wait to go back.
Our 30th anniversary dinner date at the Butternut Tree, Edmonton’s latest foodie pied-a-terre, became an unexpected culinary sojourn through Canadian cuisine. Chef Scott Downey’s restaurant shares its view of the river valley with the Alberta Legislature. The sweeping panorama definitely provides the proper background for the bespoke menu of locally-sourced ingredients. Our gastronomic journey started with a cured halibut that was a reveille for things to come. The crab with herbs, presented in a rye tart shell, gently bridged a tasteful transition to the next culinary surprise, the bannock. Although the bannock was adorned with berries, kelp, and pumpkin seed, the real stars here were the mushrooms. It felt as if they’d voluntarily walked out of the forest to place themselves on the bannock, begging for our patronage. Around the next bend in our course was the rockfish. Reclining on bed of wild rice, moisturized by an exquisite kelp broth, it perfectly bookended the savoury part of the menu. Chef Scott and his team next menu item provided a portage to the single meat choice: bison. To do bison well takes a master-artificer’s knowledge of heat. The meat was grilled to perfection, a beautiful interplay of moisture and texture, complimented by a supporting cast of Saskatoon berries and lentils. As the sun gently set over the river valley, a cherry ice-cream, couched on exquisitely roasted rye, brought us to our mooring. The fact that we don’t drink alcohol was a further test the Butternut Tree team’s dedication to the satisfaction of its clientele. Chef Scott was apprised of this fact in advance, so he created and served up an amazing array of ‘mocktails’ which perfectly complemented each dish. An elderberry-based tonic for the halibut, a sumacade honeyed verbena for the crab, sea buckthorn berry sweet tea for the bannock, a juniper & rose tea soda for the rockfish, and a pickled seabean clamato for the bison. The postprandial cloudberry tea was followed by an invitation by Chef Scott to come and meet his team in the open kitchen. If you look for culinary stimulation, or simply to impress, the Butternut Tree is definitely the place to go. Scott, we will be back.
Absolutely a fantastic experience! My girlfriend and me went there for an anniversary dinner, the atmosphere and service is the top of the line!
One of my favourite places in the city for special occasions. The six course vegetarian option is always delicious and masterfully done. The cocktails are fun and inventive. And the giant windows have a beautiful view of the river valley
If you want a special atmosphere for that important date, this is the place to go. Fine dining meets trendy sophistication in food, location and service. They use locally sourced ingredients not just for the food but drinks too. There are some inspiring choices in the cuisine and cocktails alike. I had the Bison rib eye which was superb. I thoroughly recommend The Butternut Tree if you are into top quality cuisine and are prepared to pay for it.
Easily top three food experience in edmonton.
Nice ambiance and service but the food doesn't match. The presentation was Michelin star but the appetizers lacked seasoning, the mushroom bannock was too earthy, the crab had a burned crust and the pureed arugala was so bitter it was inedible.
Foie gras with wild mushrooms. Excellent! Solid fine dinning restaurant!
Delicious food - uses ONLY ingredients found in Canada! A bit pricey but worth it!
Excellent tasting menu during the weeknight. An early reservation gets you a table beside the windows. The Constable Ezio Faraone Park lights up in the evening, makes a great view. If you're not having the tasting menu, the braised maitake mushrooms was excellent. Good value for the money.
Attended an event here over the weekend and will not return due to lack of hospitality.
The dishes were delicious and presented in a unique way. Also every table has a beautiful view of the outside scenery.
We met Jillian the catering manager to discuss hosting our wedding here next summer. She was helpful and friendly. We decided to book our event here because she was accommodating to help us stay within our budget and the food tasted delicious. When my fiancee, sister and I went for dinner here last week, the waiter was very knowledgeable about the ingredients in all the dishes. The food was a bit unfamiliar but we all enjoyed our meals and agreed that it was delicious.
Wow. What a place. What an experience. Amazing atmosphere, great views and even greater dishes. So much time and effort goes into the dishes - and it shows. All sourced from Canadian ingredients, even the drink menu is all Canadian. Who knew there was more to Canadian cuisine than poutines, Nanaimo bars and Canadian Bacon. Thank you Butternut Tree for showing the pride and epitome of Canadiana - fantastic restaurant!!
Food and drinks look great and taste special, probably one of the best restaurant in Edmonton. The location is convenient and landscape is beautiful. Good for date. One thing is that they didn't allow us to bring balloons and birthday cake, they promised to provide us a candle, yeah they really gave us a tiny one.
Came here for my birthday dinner last year. All 4 of us left massively underwhelmed and said we would never go back. Dont believe the hype.
Easily one of the best dinners I've had in Edmonton. Spent 3 wonderful hours enjoying a fantastic 10-course curated meal with matching wine. Expensive, but so delicious and memorable. Wonderful service and great memories
WOw. Didnt know edm had a restaurant of this caliber. Dont come here if you want the best bang for your buck. That said - your taste buds will leave the butternut tree mucho happy ;)
AMAZING food and AMAZING service. Staff was great at explaining all the plates and where the ingredients came from
Interesting place. Definitely worth a visit because of the restrictions they place on themselves. If you're a foodie that likes contemplating aspects of a dish while eating it's a must go. If you just want a tasty meal, that's a hard one. Plated nicely and if you haven't dabbled in meals that take into account molecular gastronomy it's worth going to. I've gone a few times because it's an experience worth having with certain people, but personally not a place I'd take everyone. Service is excellent, space is sparse but interesting. Haven't been a fan of their brunch(to be fair I'm not really a brunch guy though)to me dinner is where the magic happens.
This place is absolutely amazing. The service was great, the cocktails were so delicious, and the food was perfection. This is a small intimate space with a cozy but classy atmosphere. I cannot wait to go back.
Gorgeous presentation. Amazing view. Excellent service. One of the best restaurants in Edmonton.
Gorgeous presentation. Amazing view. Excellent service. One of the best restaurants in Edmonton.
I can't rave about this place enough!! This service was excellent, the atmosphere was impecible. They only source fresh, regional, Canadian ingredients - from their proteins to their spices and alcohol - if it isn't indigenous to Canada, they don't use it! It is so refreshing to find such true food integrity, combined with excellent quality and the experience needed to take these ingredients to the next level! Plus they change their menu seasonally - I'm already making excuses to go back!
Everyone's an expert food critic these days; sprinkle in some 9th grade vocabulary here or there, and maybe a producer will hire you to replace Anthony Bourdain. This is the best restaurant in Edmonton. The atmosphere, the staff, presentation, flavour, menu, drinks, desserts, coffee, everything is 5 Stars. It will be challenging for those dining on a budget or with a simple palette, as evidenced by the few hollow negative reviews. They didnt miss a single step and everything and everyone was perfect. The best part: it's all Canadian. Have the caviar trio, it's to die for.
Wow. What a fabulous evening. I took my fiancé here for her Birthday, she was grinning from ear to ear. The dining room is GORGEOUS, with almost floor to ceiling windows throughout, we had a great view of the Legislature building and the sunset over the river valley. They aim to provide food that is only cultivated in Canada. The dishes were very beautifully presented, and the flavor combinations were unique, surprising and delicious. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. So pretty much everything you would expect from high end culinary experience. The prices were also very reasonable. Would highly recommend this restaurant to any foodie or for anyone looking to wow their significant other. Enjoy!
Phenomenal meal! Every ingredient is from Canada and flavors are paired for a true culinary experience.
Very disappointed. We came here for my moms birthday. The service was great, the food however lacked flavour. I had a steak for $47, if I’m paying $47 for a slice off a steak I expect to thoroughly enjoy that steak. I asked for a medium cook, instead I got medium rare. Very chewy in the middle and tasted like iron. I did not eat the rest after a couple of bites. So I basically paid $47 for rice and a couple mushrooms. The portions were tiny and my entire family paid and had to go to a different restaurant to actually have a filling meal. I would not recommend this restaurant.
A hidden Gem of food sources. These folks show a phenomenal taste in what they will serve. Their menu changes up to 3 times a week. So it will have constant change. We were fortunate enough to get in on the spur of the moment. Tim Marshall was informative in guiding our choices very knowledgeable. Hats off to all the staff, they have a seamless working environment. Our 34th anniversary could not have gone any better. Certainly will be back! Remember 110 st is one way north bound.
Such a cool place! Everything on the menu is from Canada, meaning they don't even use citrus because it can't be grown here. The flavours are so intricate and like nothing I've ever had before. The service was exceptional as well, even the server training was very knowledgeabe. We should support more Canadian restaurants like this. So good!
I love The Butternut Tree! The food and cocktails are exquisite. I highly recommend the tasting menu, but the individual entrees will not disappoint. The staff are wonderful and helpful, and the entire experience is consistently amazing. If you go once, prepare to come back again!
My wife and I had an absolutely outstanding experience here tonight. In fact not only did we come with high expectations, based on reviews and write-ups, but those expectations were easily exceeded. We will definitely be back soon, and will be bring people back with us for sure. We definitely look forward to trying the Chef's gourmand tasting menu with our next experience.
Fabulous food, great wine choices, nice desserts! Great for a date night or business meal. Would not recommend it for kids.
Excellent. Innovative food with a local focus. Truly wonderful.
Overall, we had a wonderful dining experience yesterday! We felt very welcomed the moment we stepped inside. The receptionist's smile comforted us as it was our first time. We were ushered to our seats with a beautiful view. The staff were attentive. We had an a la carte menu. We really enjoyed everything, especially the handmade crisps on a cheese board; sauce with our main course; freshness of the vegetables; cocktail drinks; and the heavenly desserts! Also, special compliments to Chef Scott Downey. Thank you for a pleasant evening!
A truly special dining experience. A lot of unique takes on common Canadian foods, and it's clear that the chef/owner really has fun with the menu. Can't say I had ever eaten moss or crickets before! The waitstaff we're friendly and attentive without hovering. The decor is warm, yet modern, and the food is extremely high quality. I didn't care for the black garlic ice cream with my dessert, but mad respect for actually putting that on a menu! Would definitely come back in another season to see what they come up with.
Absolutely amazing... So fresh and the recipes are unique! Would recommend for a phenomenal fine dining experience.
Fancy. Great service.
Went to the Butternut Tree for the second time yesterday (July 2020), and everything was stellar. The focus on Canadian sourced ingredients means a few unique items you've probably never tried, but they manage to really make the ingredients shine. Service was excellent, the staff really knew the menu and provided good suggestions and the food was spectacular. Can't wait to come back for a third try.
The restaurant itself is beautiful - simple decor, and lovely views of the legislature, highlevel and river valley. I also love their dedication to everything Canada. The service was also great. The food left something to be desired at the steep price point though - I expected more. That's not to say it was bad...but for the price point I'd much rather go to Rge Rd. Glad I went, but don't think I'll go back.
Had dinner for the first and last time at this restaurant. Upon arrivival my gf and I were sat at a 4 person table while there were several tables for 2 that were available, so that didnt make much sense. We decided to each order the angus steak. When the entrees arrived we noticed how small the portions were but didnt let it bother us as we expected the flavors to be the focal point. The steaks were both very tough to cut into and mine had a thick vein of gristle running through the middle of the cut that made almost a third of the steak inedible. The side dishes were also not very flavourful so the whole meal was extremely disappointing. If I pay $52 for a steak it could at least be of decent quality. When I brought it to the waiters attention he seemed offended and rolled his eyes as he took off to the kitchen. He came back and said the chef is very temperamental(as if that's an excuse) and cant be responsible with how the meat is butchered. He then left my table and did his best to avoid us until he brought dessert menus and said they would comp us a dessert. I made the mistake of ordering dessert which again was tiny, a coffee cake that didnt taste like coffee at all with a tablespoon of ice cream that didnt really go well with the cake. We actually had a laugh at how poor the food was and the excuses the waiter had given us. My biggest regret other than making the reservation in the first place was giving any tip at all to that waiter. Oh well, lesson learned. I would honestly not eat here for free.
Dine in
Wanted to treat my mom to a nice high tea for Mother’s Day and had heard wonderful things about the restaurant but had never been. The presentation of the boxes were nice, but the savoury sandwiches were really salty, the sweet items that had pastry/crusts were soggy and the fruit she received was a bunch of grapes with some missing. I was really excited for mom to have a delicious Mother’s Day meal, but sadly this was a disappointment especially at $65/person, plus tax, service fee & tip. An email the next day to fill out a survey about the high tea experience wasn’t even followed up on given the disappointment of the meals. This was definitely not worth the money or time.
Beautiful photographic dishes but i wouldn't recommend eating this at all.
Unique.. I absolutely love it here. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly
A beautiful location for dinner and a nice modern decor. The food is for foodie types who think out of the box. Almost everything is Canadian and grown here. I had the beef striploin and the wife had the Pacific halibut. Both are unique as the striploin came with fava beans and morels. The beef was for me a little undercooked than the medium that I asked for but it tasted fine. The wife's halibut was good as well and I thought it was seared just enough to add some crispness. For some this place will be out of their comfort zone and they just want meat and potatoes and this is not their type of restaurant. For others this will be an adventure and love it. A bit pricey and was still hungry after so hence the rating. For 2 of us it came to $150 without tip and still hungry, hmm. Enjoy foodie types, the place is yours. Edit: From when we ordered (about 8pm) till when our food arrived (9:10) was a very long period of time. Mine arrived at basically room temperature so I think it was cooked by 8:30 and sat for 40 minutes. Not sure if it was supposed to be artistically cold.
Absolutely fantastic dining experience in the city of Edmonton!
Tasty and unique Canadian dishes in an ever changing seasonal menu. The morels were to die for.
We enjoyed a wonderful meal! Great atmosphere, beautiful views of the legislature, and such a creative menu. The chef Scott even took us for a tour of the kitchen. Would highly recommend this restaurant!
We went for our anniversary and were brought a complimentary glass of bubbly right after we sat down. The food was beautifully prepared and every dish had something that surprised us a bit, such as finding out how much a big slice of cabbage could the best part of your meal. It was a great experience both with the food and the service and we really look forward to going back.
Anyone looking to host an event here please rethink. As others have said, they are not accommodating, very difficult to work with and rigid. Because I questioned them on the extra rentals and hidden costs and policies that came out of nowhere I received an email response 5 days later with an excuse about Covid that they wouldn’t allow us to book our 80 person private event unless we lowered to 50 guests and therefor wouldn’t require rentals. I had said we owned banquet tables so didn’t need the rentals of tables and would prefer a different style chair and that was the response 5 days later. Not happy they couldn’t nickel and dime us I guess. So buyout cost still the same but limited our guest list which they knew was to be 80 guests. Their wedding brochure and contract clearly states that the guest can choose to coordinate rentals on their own and when I pointed that out they glazed over without accepting any responsibility for their oversight. They did not acknowledge that the contract or wedding brochure should be more clear and were perfectly happy allowing that miscommunication to leave potential clients unhappy. In fact they chose to double down on the issue. They do not let you choose the style of table or chairs or table cloths but they make sure to charge you the more expensive delivery and pickup rate of 99$ each way instead of 79$. Then they charge you their own 15% service fee for coordinating the rentals (as if you even have a choice) when you already pay 1750$ for their private event services off the top and automatic gratuity on the whole bill. So let me tell you upfront that they will charge you almost 900$ to add rentals to accommodate 22 additional guests. They initially agreed to a grazing table and although no restrictions changed to allow buffet style service they refused in subsequent meetings. We dodged a bullet by not booking with this venue. I imagine they would have not allowed the bride and groom to even toast each table or dance without a mask on. Would have been horrendous experience and photos. If you think any sort of practicality and rationality should be used in this current world, you should avoid this place more than the plague itself. Would give zero if I could. I agree with others that the staff come across as pretentious.
Great butternut tree soup!
Unique and creative menu based on seasonal Canadian-sourced cuisine. Wonderful service and a cozy dining room offering great views of the Edmonton river valley.
Excellent food, service was top notch, the wild mushroom appy with cauliflower mushroom was favorite. The lamb chops were cooked to perfection . And loved the drink with spruce tips in it.
The Butternut Tree - I'm disappointed and here's why, everything about the restaurant is what you should expect! Outstanding decor with an incredible view, warmth and guinuine welcome from all employees. My disappointment comes from the food, we were 6 of us that chose the tasting menu and unanimously all agreed that the food was too salty and the composition of the dishes/ingredients were at times odd. So you can only imagine that I was not thrilled with my invoice. That been said I'll go back, because they were opened to our feedback and I truly believe that they care about our experiences. Lastly, this experience is a great remainder that looking sexy is not enough!
DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR A PRIVATE EVENT. Had a awful experience with this restaurant. We had booked a corporate event and rented out the whole venue. The staff and owner were unaccomodating and difficult to plan the event with. The general manager Jillian seemed to hold some sort of bias against our group and the staff as a whole was highly pretentious. Beware of hidden fees and exaggerated rental costs. This restaurant charges a premium but does not operate in that way. The staff were passive aggressive in dealing with our guests mostly due to masking rules. We were all aware of masking rules and not opposed to them. But what I didn't know was how aggressive and militant they were about enforcement. The staff would pester guests if they stood up to greet someone or pulled down there mask for a sip of their drink or to eat. It became very abrasive and ruined our event. It felt as though the staff was prepped by their manager or owner to act in this manner towards us. Majority of the guests consisted of health professionals that were happy to wear a mask when appropriate. We also felt like we were spoken to in a condescending manner many times throughout the evening. When I approached the owner Scott Downey he seemed uninterested in resolving any issues. As soon as the final invoice was paid they terminated all communications which tells me they don't really care about customer satisfaction. While the venue is beautiful and the food was good.. I would never book an event here again nor recommend to anyone else.
Best eat out experience
Amazing service. Polite, fast, and knowledgeable. Food portions were small for the price but if that's how it has to be for 100% Canadian sourced food, I'll gladly pay. Pretty good location as well
Wow, I had no idea this level of elevated, fine dining was even available in Edmonton. We have some great restaurants, but Butternut Tree has officially raised the bar. Amazing views of the legislature and high level bridge, fabulous ambiance, veteran servers, and a one of a kind menu that oozes the chef owners personality and vision. Thanks for an amazing anniversary meal we will be back!
Very impressive. World class. Nice to have a place like this in Edmonton. Blows everything else in town completely out of the water...
Had a Good time
Amazing food! Beautiful restaurant! Love the staff!
Wow, this place was amazing... I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion. The food was exceptional, you get what you pay for... So don't expect Earl's level food, you're going to be getting something next level. Our waitress Emilie was very knowledgeable in all the questions about the menu we asked and everything came out at a nice time, very relaxing & cozy atmosphere. Will for sure go back.
Nice location, the 5 course tasting menu with the wine pairing was phenomenal! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone
Not a bad restaurant. Service was attentive when needed and very professional. Servers were very knowledgable of the menu and gave some good recommendations when asked. I got the Alpine Meadow cocktail to start and it was very tasty. Strong to start off but as the ice dilutes it, it gets better. We ordered the trio of Caviar, Manila clams, foie gras and autumn squash to start it off. The appetizers were okay. Flavours were pretty good, but the squash probably needed a bit more. This place is not for the simple palette. A lot of ingredients you don't usually see come into play and the flavours are a bit more complex. We ordered a few of the mains to share so we could get a taste of everything. We ordered the lamb, sable fish, beef short rib, and duck. The lamb was probably the best dish of the night in my opinion. The seasoning was very good and burnt onion gave it a nice zing. The creamed kale was a nice side to go along with it. Since we shared most of the dishes, everything was a bit over cooked for my taste. The beef was kind of dry.. Seasoning was good but probably ranked 4th out of the main courses we had. The duck was pretty good, it came out medium and was also a touch dry. The creamed spaghetti squash that came with it was very good. The fish was buttery and cooked perfectly. I was not a big fan of the rye risotto though. Might've been a bit undercooked, but it had a snappy texture to it. (maybe because it is rye?) Since they are pretty new, I look forward to trying their new menus and tasting menus in the future. For the price, I would probably come back for an occasion or go elsewhere. You get what you pay for though. The lighting at night isn't good for photos at all (just my own personal complaint). Overall, I believe it is a good restaurant and would like to see them improve and make it up there.
What a fantastic restaurant to have in Edmonton. All Canadian dishes and all Canadian wine. We had great food, great service and a great time.
The only great thing about this restaurant is the view really. It’s nice inside. But the food is mediocre, pretty pricey for the small portions they give. Some of the drinks tasted very weird cause of all the extra leaves etc they added to it. One very bad thing me and my wife noticed was our server “ Bird “ wasn’t the greatest, there was also a very bad odour coming from the server.
Incredible brunch! Inspired creations with all local Canadian made ingredients. Everything in the restaurant is explicitly chosen or created, from the menu to the plates (designed and made just off Whyte Ave) and it culminates to an absolutely divine experience. Highly recommend the brunch and I will definitely be coming back to try the dinner menu. The view of the river valley, high level bridge and the side of the legislature is unparalleled.
Enjoyed a fabulous evening here. We had the tasting special with drink pairing. Absolutely amazing food excellently paired with wonderful wines from across the country. The flavours ranged from subtle and delightful to bursting sometimes in the same dish. This place is a gem. Love that they are strictly a Canadian content show case. Will definitely be back.
We had the chef's 10 course tasting menu. It was very good.
I enjoyed it. Probably one of Edmonton's better fine dining restaurants. All ingredients are all from Canada minus coffee. I'd recommend it and thought it was solid.
I took my wife here for her birthday. We ordered the sangria which neither of us liked because of the chunks getting stuck in the straw. We also ordered the bison and the halibut. Both meals were excellent! The bison was fall off the bone tender and the halibut, deliciously flaky. The view and atmosphere was very lovely and my wife commented on the temperature of the room; perfect! A feat since she's always cold. A+ restaurant. I will say the price is high, but they don't disappoint.
This is hands down one of the most unique restaurants in Edmonton. All the food is sourced in Canada. Pepper isn't made in Canada... Replaced by delicious peppery foliage. The food is executed perfectly, the cocktails are unique and well crafted. My only complaint is that while there our server spilled a drink ony wife and I, when the bill came... Not even a complimentary drink.
My boyfriend and I stopped in tonight for a cocktail after a show. We sat at the bar and had an amazing time chatting with our bartender & server. We appreciated the opportunity to speak to the staff about their love of drinks and food, their culinary experience, and dedication to their craft. I had the Autumn Fizz and absolutely loved it. Fresh, bubbly, and just the right amount of sweet, this cocktail only left me with the desire of a second round. We ordered the cheese plate and the chef was able to accommodate our late order. Everything was fresh and delicious and paired well with our drinks. All food and drink are Canadian grown/made. We appreciate the local-focused approach and dedication to fresh, delicious food & beverage. Until next time!
The food was delicious and the experience was wonderful. They really took care of us on our anniversary.
Tight execution and wonderful plating combined with extremely appropriate wine pairings made for an amazing dinner experience. Combine that with the view and you have a must-visit.
From the time we were greeted at the door, server was introduced to us, concept / vision of the chef was explained, menu options described and then to eating, everything was exceptional, what a fantastic evening. A very big thankyou to the entire staff for making our first visit awesome, definitely will return ????????????????????
Blew my wife's mind with a wonderful mothers day high tea. Presentation was amazing, food was amazing, and the mother of my daughter is amazing!
Excellent local dishes and wine menu!
Service and location, amazing. Bug on my plate, -1000 points. I've never seen a waiter make up so much bs to justify a leafy green bug on my plate, shame on the chef for asking him to do that. The halibut tasted old and had an after taste very similar to how automotive body filler smells (if that makes any sense). Definitely not what I expected. Would not return for food, but maybe a few cocktails and the view.
What a wonderful restaurant! We had such an amazing experience, our server Malorie was amazing and so knowledgeable. The 10 course and wine pairing was an incredible culinary experience.
We got the tasting menu and had a really great time there. The staff is friendly and willing to help, they explained everything to us. The food is delicious, and I learned that I enjoy moss a lot.
Been here 2x..service is good.. best views of the ledge building..very expensive restaurant.. i dont really care about the prices if the food is good.. first bill was 280ish for 2 people. with cocktails.. no wine.. food wasnt very good.. portions are very small.. decided to try it again on canada day.. was a set menu with wine pairings.. 13 course.. bill was 1100$ for 4 people.. the best thing on the menu was the soup.. i felt bad for the other couple who had to split this bill as you could tell they were not impressed at all.. will not be going back..
Honestly one of the best restaurants in the city. Imaginative menu, amazing what they do with Canadian sourced ingredients that we would never think of. Great flavours to everything and artful plating. Servers are personable but maintain a fine dining dignity and grace.
My second visit and the food and service were as brilliant as the first, adding a notable improvement to the hostess and coatcheck service.
Went to a Christmas party at this venue. For industry trying to get back on its feet , I couldn't believe the lack of professionalism from some of the staff. There were several times I basically stood up to greet friends and was instantly told to put on my mask. I had the head bartender staring at me while I greeted friends or had conversation while I was standing mask less which was in the same spot I was sitting. I saw the same bartender watching people like a hawk who were doing shots and instantly on them about masks before the drink even left their mouths. This was also the general consensus from most of the guests. I understand the use of masks but this was over the top and ruined the night. I think there needs to be some common sense used and not have hostility towards your guests. I would not recommend this venue.
Good, but not good enough. Service was nice, but the waitstaff is still quite fresh. The meal was nice, but not filling at all. An appetizer size for an entree is not appropriate. The cocktails also fell short. Neither the eqinox nor the whiskey orchard were particularly flavourful. The decor and plating is beautiful. Would recommend to try once, but not worth the return.
Expensive and delicious. I love this place. Go here for an elegant fancy dinner. All the thumbs.
The best. Each dinner inspires me to try new things and yet is still comforting.
Lovely culinary experience, top notch fine dining and service with a local perspective.
I went with a short notice reservation with two friends for my birthday brunch. The atmosphere was lovely, and the view of the river valley was refreshing. I cannot say enough about how delicious our meal was. The attention to detail was clearly well placed. Phenomenal flavour combinations, and plating. We were served by Matthew, and he was welcoming, charming, and professional. Well done!
The wine night pairing with Dirty Laundry was amazing! The dishes matched with the 5 wines were unique and delicious. They all paired very nice with the wine selected for that course. Highly recommend trying this restaurant.
Wow. The chef makes every effort to do Canadian cuisine justice. The presentation is beautiful. The flavors are so full of interest and diversity. Everything from the wine to the playlist is Canadian. I recommend a reservation along the window to admire the beautiful views.
Amazing experience! We had the 6 course and it was great! The bison was my favorite! Great service and beautiful view. Highly recommended!
It’s worth eating!
Absolutely brilliant!
Very good service
Excellent Wedding Venue! We had 47 guests so we rented out the entire restaurant for our wedding reception. The staff were all extremely professional and friendly on the night of our wedding and truly made it a special evening. Jillian was a fantastic event coordinator, she helped me make so many decisions and always responded quickly and made our day stress free. We are grateful for the impeccable service we received for our wedding. I would highly recommend booking The Butternut Tree, our guests still talk about the delicious food they ate at our wedding and the amazing service. The chef, Scott, did an amazing job, all the food came out on schedule, was delicious and they were able to accommodate our many dietary needs. I can't say enough positive things about the staff and food at The Butternut Tree. We are happy that we decided to have our wedding venue here. Thank you so much to all the staff for making our wedding a special and intimate evening.
We attended a private event at the Butternut Tree this past weekend and the experience was extremely disappointing. Understanding that the restaurant had to adhere to safety measures and masking requirements, the treatment from the staff and management was quite frankly, atrocious. This was a private party - we all showed proof of vaccination upon entry, prepared to follow the restaurant's rules but also, dare I say, we were excited to have a great evening with friends and colleagues in a beautiful, high-class restaurant. Unfortunately, our party was NOT met with the same high-class standard or service that I'm sure it strives to be. We literally felt tied to our seats, unable to simply stand up to talk to a friend or have a drink without immediately being asked to put on our mask when it was only pulled down momentarily! This is an unprecedented and difficult time for all of us, living in a time with restrictions yet trying to adjust to a "new normal". But at the end of the day, we are reasonable people and guests at this restaurant. Many of us are business owners ourselves and faced with the same challenges of running a business during a pandemic while upholding our customer service standards. There is a way to balance the two with the utmost professionalism and tact, which WAS NOT displayed by the staff and management at the Butternut Tree. Extremely disappointed. Such an unfortunate situation that could have been avoided. I would not recommend this restaurant at all.
Fantastic venue with beautiful river valley views. The food is also wonderful.
Had a nice evening out here. Restaurant is beautiful, great views and I started off with a French press coffee which was delicious. Friendly staff and our server was super nice and knowledgeable about the menu. Some of the menu choices seem to have odd pairings (one dish specified unripe apples with meat), but I went with the halibut and my girlfriend went with the chicken and both of us enjoyed our meals. Likely won't be back for some time unless I win lotto max, but it was a great "splurge" evening out.
A thoroughly enjoyable Canadian culinary experience. I'm looking forward to trying other dishes.
Worthy of a Michelin star, if only they rated in Canada. Brilliant and so creative, but never at the expense of delicious.
The food is really goood and the location is great. However the service isn’t great. We were offer a corner table with no view inspite of empty table. She also missed on taking the tea order which was a part of high team menu. I felt a bit of racism feeling in here :/
Our city's finest. I'm unaware of other restaurants in the Capital that deliver on this level.
I recommend this restaurant to everyone. The entire dining experience was fantastic. The flavours of food and drinks were outstanding. Best meal I've ever had. Did the vegetarian tasting menu, with wine pairings. They said they can make it vegan if desired as well. Loved that's it's all Canadian sourced, including the dishes. I will need to go back as the menu changes often and can't wait to see what else the chef is inspired to create (even though I would hate to not have the amazing dishes I did last night again).
I had a great first experience ! I attended a health care related management course and it was held at this cute resto! Nice view of the river valley/high level bridge area and legislature. The food was delicious and I especially enjoyed the cheesecake. I found they incorporated many of their drinks with edible flowers which made it so pretty to eat or drink’ def would recommend checking out this place :) good food, great service !
Service is nice and attentive, food is natural and tasty
Wow! The four of us enjoyed the trio caviar, foie gras, and the bison tartare to start, and had the lamb and duck as our entrees. Everything was amazing, there was not one bite spared! The flavor combinations were complex and surprising but tasted absolutely phenomenal. Thanks to Mathew for the great service.
Great service, atmosphere and experience - if you can get over the small amount and relatively subpar quality of food given the price you pay ($65-80/person and you get 1 unique item on the picture you see). The bacon muffin was very dry and crumbly and you definitely need the butter they provide. The cinnamon bun had good flavor but the texture of the dough was borderline cooked. While I liked the savory treats I wish there was more of it. I think you need to eat lunch first before coming for high tea. I've only been to art of cake for high tea so that's my bar. To be honest I would just go to Ernest at NAIT and try their Tiffin menu for $20. Yeah it's not high tea but at least you won't get to feel how I feel right now. Bummed out. :/
First let me say that this was a birthday outing and, as an novel culinary experience, no one came away disappointed, exactly. We started with an amuse bouche of fried moss and creme fraiche, which set the tone for the meal. Interesting textures, flavours, and ingredients, but very small portions for the price. We followed with the textures of potato, the chicken hearts, and the veal sweetbreads. For mains, we had the rabbit, duck, and pheasant. Everything was, we were told, sourced from within Canada, and that's interesting and maybe even laudable, but the overall experience fell a bit short, probably because the portions on all the dishes were so small it made it difficult to share around and really get a feel for these dishes. The servers were attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful. A good experience, but I think I preferred other mostly locally sourced venues, like 12 Acres or Rge Rd.
Loved the presentation of all the dishes, however, quite a few of the dishes missed the mark. Elk was dry, duck was over cooked, panna cotta was a little stiff. Flavours were great, but definitely need to work on execution. We did love the Cod dishes though! Cooked the fish to perfection. Favourite dishes of the night. Would definitely come back again and give it another try.
Had very high hopes but they fell short. I feel like they are trying so hard to incorporate lots of flavours and spend so much effort on presentation they forget about seasoning. All the dishes we had could have used some salt. Great ideas but it’s like they hadn’t tasted the dishes themselves. 2 domestic beer, 2 entrees, and 2 starters $175 dollars.
Out of the box culinary experience. Worth the visit.
Amazing.
This place is amazing love the food , the view, and the staff!!! Perfect place to go on date, the new menu for brunch is as good as the dinner one!!! Love how the chef plays with so many flavours and everything so natural and local!!!
Spent New Years Eve with a group of friends here and had an absolutely wonderful time! The NYE pris fixe menu with wine pairings was extraordinary. The food was flavourful, creative and at times pushed our comfort/experience level. The chef was able to make everything vegetarian or vegan friendly for folks who requested.
Wonderful culinary experience! A must try with constant changes on the menu which makes it a delight to revisit. Everything on the dish has a story and a purpose. Cocktails were fantastic and well balanced. All Canadian wine list which works well with the whole mantra of the restaurant. Service was fantastic and servers were very well informed and added alot of great details to the dishes. Ty and the whole service team that evening were fantastic. If you're up for a more adventurous dinner highly recommended.
Great canadian food experience.
Amazing Bison
Went here for my anniversary and got a free glass of bubbles and it happened to be the first time my fiancé has been in Canada, so why not take him to an all Canadian restaurant. We had the chef’s tasting menu and let me just say- WOW! This menu wowed us, opened us up to new foods and try amazing dishes. Our personal favourite was the bison tartare- it was delicious. We were very full by the end as well. We also tried two of their non alcoholic drinks and they were both different and delicious. I definitely recommend this restaurant to any couples! The customer service was amazing too.
The Butternut Tree is my absolute favorite for fine dining in Edmonton! I've only been here twice, but was equally impressed both times. On my most recent visit, my boyfriend and I ordered the 6-course tasting menu to celebrate a special occasion. Our servers explained what was in each dish as they set them down on our table. Great attention to detail was given to harmonizing the flavors and plating the dishes. Not only did the food look appealing, but it tasted amazing as well. The edible flowers were unreal! The halibut was cooked to perfection - I would order it as an entree next time. Five stars for food and service!
Bad food and very rude staff with lack of respect for the patrons
Emphasis on the beauty. The man who is the genius behind this place came out at the end to meet us. He clearly has such a love for his life and it really comes out in his food. He even helped make the pottery you will be eating from. He is completely hands-on and puts all his heart into this art of his. Come give The Butternut Tree a try. You will love it.
Best food in the City of Edmonton. I hosted an event with them and every course was unbelievably delicious. My guests were amazed at the concept of a fully Canadian sourced meal and couldn’t stop talking about it after the fact. I can’t wait to return here to try some of the new menu items. The chef and the serving staff have an amazing attention to detail and this comes through with the stellar service you receive while dining here.
Ambiance - 8/10. Beautiful interior and view into kitchen. Okay exterior view, excentuated by the homeless guy walking on the train track. Service - 4/10. Waiter brought the wrong wine, then uncorked it wrong (cork in wine). We ordered bone marrow; he described why he loves marrow and talked about spreading vice dollop. He then brought us tuna instead of marrow and proceeded to tell us that we never ordered marrow despite the spoons he brought us to scoop the marrow. Odd. Food - 3/10. Mediocre tartare. Tuna had zero salt or flavour. The lamb had way way too much salt. Lamb and marrow were both extremely undercooked. Striploin was okay. Wine was good despite not being decanted and the cork shenanigans.
A very good tasting menu, in it were two perfect bites with the mussel on a potato shell. Service was very good.
everything was delicious
Had takeout from here for the first time tonight. Truly magical food, the chef cooks with a deliberate, whimsical touch. The celeriac noodles were otherworldly and the carrot pureé that's served with the bison short rib made me question my existence. Thanks so much!
Food was really good, but we came with a few months of opening and service was slow and they didn’t have utensils for take out.
Had delicious gluten free high tea and I already can't wait to go back again. Food was great and staff were very friendly
Fantastic food and pleasant service!!
Fantastic location and amazing menu. Must try for foodies
Exceptional food and artistic presentation (very unique dishes), top notch service, portions aren't huge, but to be expected at a high-class joint like this, love the layout and nice views. A lot of oldies (freedom 55 crowd) frequent this place, so if you're in your 30s/40s or younger--be forewarned, but don't let that deter you from experiencing this truly first-class restaurant--top 3 in this city, imo!
The bison and pork dishes were delicious! Every part of the meal was unique and flavourful. Great ambience, relaxed setting with a lovely view - highly recommend, and we will be back!
Every bite is meticulously prepared. The food is enthusiastically presented with a detailed explanation of the ingredients and preparation. Exquisite flavours dance on your palate.
The food and service is very good and the location and atmosphere is one of the best in Edmonton.
First restaurant we've got to sit down for this year and, I have to say, it was it was a great experience. The chef's tasting menu was out of this world with authentic Canadian ingredients only, but what thoroughly blew my mind was the service. Our waitress was the most attentive and personable employee I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. Plus the view from our table couldn't be beat.

Cold plates = cold food. Disappointing.
LOVE this place!! Seriously a gem in Edmonton!! Highly recommend to anyone who would identify as a foodie, go for the tasting menu! Everything is Canada sourced except for the coffee I believe, EVERYTHING! The plates are works of art and the flavours and ingredients are inspired. The view is fantastic, the vintage train passes right by the large floor to ceiling windows and the legislative building is right next door. Our server Adam was so passionate and knowledgeable, impeccable service! Can’t praise enough!
What a unique and interesting dining experience! Every dish was so fascinating. Absolutely delicious.
Attended a wedding reception here and the food and service were fantastic! Our server Tim was exceptional and lovely to talk to. We'll be back!
Excellent food, awesome front of house staff and great ambiance.
We love The Butternut Tree! We had our wedding here because of the view and the food. We will be coming back for our anniversaries because we had an amazing experience for our wedding. All of our guests were raving about our choice of venue and food.
We joined the High Tea last Sunday and were really impressed with the whole experience. The family was hesitant to still make the outing because of the pandemic but the cleanliness of the restaurant and vigilance of the staff eased our worries immediately. The baked goods and the winter themed cocktails were exceptional; the only issue we had was finding the restaurant as there is no clear sign outside. All in all a great experience
Heard great things about this place and The Butternut Tree did not disappoint. Cozy atmosphere with nice views of the Leg grounds, and the best part was watching the chef in the open kitchen. We tried the 5 course tasting with pairings and it was perfect. The staff were attentive and knowledgable. A little pricey but it's an experience you won't forget.
Nice restaurant. Service was amazing. All about Canadian sources products. Mostly about presentation. Food was okay.
Service
The atmosphere on a Sunday morning for brunch is relaxing. Service is incredible with the staff being very knowledgeable about the food and ingredients being served. Food is nothing short of phenomenal. My girlfriend had the benedict and the hollandaise sauce is to die for. I had the beef and eggs. Perfectly cooked ans seasoned meat, and the perfect combination of textures. However, the mushrooms were a bit too salty for my liking. I will be going back for dinner next time.
First and foremost I went with trepidation I viewed the menu on line and thought maybe there was more than what I saw on line.We arrived were seated ,by friendly staff presented the wine list and menu .First sign of a problem ,only Canadian wines ,not a big fan , as the 4 gentlemen beside us as well said .Oh well tried one and yes as I thought very mediocre my wife didn't even finish hers ussually we have at least 2 9 ounce glasses (I don't think 9 ounces is even an option) next complimentary sample of halibut very good my wife commented, I don't like raw fish so I had nothing no bread available.Next the appetizer a crab tart beautiful presentation, but lacking in taste mushy crab on an tart shell that over powered the crab.Main course halibut for the wife ;chicken for myself ;again beautiful presentation with the halibut the mushrooms and squash were great but left you tasting a very salty butter after taste. The halibut was just okay nothing special. Now the chicken again great presentation the buckwheat and mushrooms were fantastic except a sodium overload the chicken nicely rendered the best I ever witnessed but nothing for flavors except sodium .We stopped here no dessert as we were quite disappointed. Good luck I hope that a little broader menu appears down the road ie a salad or two some bread a few non Canadian wines otherwise I would find it hard to return. Btw chicken for $38 dollars it better be outstanding this not so much .Understanding the theme is Canadian but hey we grow wheat here give us some bread .Left disappointed 2 mediocre glasses of wine 1 appetizer 2 main courses tip $150 .Btw we frequent restaurants a least 2 times per week.
Service and presentation was beyond excellent. The view is good, depending where you sit and what time it is (it was dark so we didn't see much) Food was alright. We shared a large variety of dishes (tar tar, oysters, sweetbreads, pheasant, short rib, halibut) and even though the concept is to share, there wasn't much on the plate to split up between the 4 of us. Nothing left me drooling for more, it was a tad underseasoned in my opinion. Dessert was strange and underwhelming, none of us even tried to have second helpings of it. Wine selection was great. I wouldn't go back but a veteran foodie who loves fine dining may have different opinion than me.
