Even though we arrived late on a Sunday afternoon, Julie was very friendly and most helpful with our reservation. Car was exactly what we needed, and was in very good condition. Would use them again.

Good rental company. I was a bit scared because there were some bad reviews for the one in Christchurch. I relocated a car so only paid 1$ (plus insurance). People at the office in Christchurch were friendly and here in Picton too. The car was awesome. It was a beautiful, new Toyota Corolla. It even still smelled like a new car. It had a GPS and rear view camera. They didn’t check if anything was wrong with the car or if I filled the car up with fuel at the drop off.

(Translated) Hertz in New Zealand: thieves and incompetents !!! They tell you that everything is fine and then there are endless problems. We rented on the internet which we picked up in Auckland, and we took the ferry to Wellington for Picton where we had to change cars. However, the reservation for Picton was not transmitted from Auckland (however specified when booking on the Internet), and our reservation number no longer existed, so it was impossible to modify the reservation on their site. We call Picton directly and we are told that everything is fine and we are hung up on the nose. In Wellington, we are going to the downtown agency on December 24 to fix the problem, and have a written confirmation. We are told that everything is settled but no paper in writing and we are told that we can return the car on the 25th in the city center; however the agency is closed of course and no place to leave the keys. We therefore return the car to the ferry terminal and as agreed with the full tank. However, we then receive an invoice of 6 dollars for the full. At picton, we collect the car on the 26th at 1:00 p.m. Very cheerful staff. We specify that we made the reservation requested to return the car at 6:00 pm in Christchurch on January 6. We are told that is ok. The 6th, we return the car even earlier at 5:00 p.m. in Christchurch and we then receive an invoice where we are told that we will collect one more day for not having returned the car at 1:00 p.m. So above all do not return the keys without having an invoice at the time and above all do not trust them (in Auckland, Picton or Christchurch) !!! (Original) Hertz en Nouvelle Zélande : des voleurs et des incompétents !!! Ils vous disent que tout va bien et ensuite il y a sans cesse des problèmes. Nous avons loué sur Internet que nous avons récupérée à Auckland, et nous avons pris le ferry à Wellington pour Picton où nous avons dû changer de voiture. Or, la réservation pour Picton n’a pas été transmise depuis Auckland (pourtant précisée lors de la réservation sur Internet), et notre numéro de réservation n’existait plus donc impossible de modifier la réservation sur leur site. On appelle directement Picton et on nous dit que tout va bien et on nous raccroche au nez. À Wellington, nous allons le 24 décembre à l’agence du centre ville pour régler le problème, et avoir une confirmation par écrit. On nous dit que tout est réglé mais pas de papier par écrit et on nous précise que l’on peut rendre la voiture le 25 en centre ville ; or l’agence est fermée bien évidemment et aucun endroit pour laisser les clefs. Nous rendons donc la voiture au terminal des ferry et comme convenu avec le plein d’essence. Or, nous recevons ensuite une facture de 6 dollars pour le plein. À picton, nous récupérons la voiture le 26 à 13:00. Personnel très souriant. Nous précisons que nous avons à la réservation demandé à rendre la voiture à 18:00 à Christchurch le 6 janvier. On nous dit que c’est ok. Le 6, nous rendons la voiture même plus tôt à 17:00 à Christchurch et nous recevons ensuite une facture où on nous dit nous prélever un jour de plus pour ne pas avoir rendu la voiture à 13:00 !!! Donc surtout ne pas rendre les clefs sans avoir une facture sur le moment et surtout ne pas leur faire confiance (à Auckland, à Picton ou à Christchurch) !!!

I had booked a car with another company and I was told the morning I came to get my car that they couldn't accept my credit card (and that was very likely that no other company would have accepted it). Please note that my card is a completely normal credit card so the reason behind their rejection is still unknown to me. Of course I was desperate: I was travelling alone and I had a full month of already paid accomodation around the south island. So I went to Hertz and I still can't believe how lucky I've been. Not only they had a spare car suitable for me, but Julia (the lady I talked to) was also very kind and helped me and reassured me. She totally saved my holiday! (Also no absolute problem with the credit card). The car I rented was a Holden barina, it was new, very functional and comfortable. I had no problem during my holiday, but Hertz gives you plenty of advices about what to do if you get involved in a crash or the car breaks. Totally recommend Hertz!

Friendly staff, fast service. One star lost as the drop off is a little walk to the office, which some people may not like. This may be because of the ferry terminal setup however.

The agency was open when we arrived. It seems like they open to suit the Ferry arrival times, so I’m not sure how you would pick up your car if you didn’t arrive at those times. Actually quite busy. The line moved fairly quickly and we were helped into our car by Drea. There was one surprise fee added to the bill which wasn’t on my original reservation. Drea was able to remove the fee. Otherwise we had a trouble free rental to Christchurch. We will be back. Our car was a hybrid which is a great choice for NZ petrol prices. Thanks again Drea.

Multiple failings! We were not told about $40 pick up fee after hiring a car from Auckland. We were then incorrectly informed of our drop off location, which meant an hour of our time in Queenstown to drop off car. On top of this we had to wait over an hour in Picton to pick up the car which was not cleaned properly. Very poor service and I would never recommend this company!!

As per usual with Hertz we were “upgraded” from a large, comfortable sedan to a small, cheap, buzzy SUV. Never again Hertz.
