A group of us—all women “of a certain age”—just spent a fantastic week in the amazingly beautiful house and secluded setting of “Howe Bay Summer Home”. We all either live in Maine or spend seasonal time there and we topped off the summer by bringing our bikes and kayaks and more, and settling in at Howe Bay. When we drove in after almost eight hours on the road, our first reaction was, “OH, WOW! We had seen the photos on the web site, of course, and they are good…but the reality of the house, the decks, the view and just the beauty of the place was so very much more! The house shone like the jewel it is—spotlessly clean and welcoming! We only had about an hour of daylight left, but we were everywhere….kayaks down to the water to be ready in the morning…food into the two (2!) refrigerators…gear into the bedrooms…bikes by the back porch…we were ready for our week!
The “OH, WOW!” reaction never let up—every cabinet we opened, every room we explored was a testimony to the thoughtfulness of the owners! Supplies in the laundry, in the entrance bath, in the kitchen with the spices and cookware and utensils—anything anyone could need was there! Spare blankets, a huge supply of towels, lifejackets (we had our own, but it was good to see all of them) in every size….there was even a bottle of bubbles for kids (or adults for that matter). The viewing scope in the living room brought the bay into the living room to watch birds or just distant scenery. The cushions on the deck furniture….the beautiful sun-room…the 2nd floor balcony-deck….the large windows that brought all of that fantastic outdoors inside….all was designed for comfort, relaxation and beauty. The thoughtfulness of the owners was in every detail!
We enjoyed fires in both the fireplace inside and the fire pit outside, and appreciated the ready supply of dry wood. The spaciousness of the house allowed for plenty of group areas, but there was enough room to spread out so that even with six of us, we could each find a comfortable spot to hunker in with a book or phone.
Howe Bay summer Home was our own private little world for a week….and we loved it! Dawn walks on the beach, kayaking in the mornings, biking in the afternoons, sitting and watching moonrise in the evenings, exploring the island on the one rainy day, pickleball in Souris…we packed it in, and when we finally had to load up and return to Maine, we just kept repeating….”OH, WOW”!
A lovely house on P.E.I….
With perfect views of bay and sky…
Fields of red and gulls of white,
Full moon rising at the edge of night…
Morning paddles, evening fires,
Small town churches with tall spires.
Skeins of geese plus crows and more… could
Early walks on a russet shore.
Riding bikes on a well-groomed track—
We loved it here and we’ll be back!
