I was seen by this doctor while I was inpatient at Brandon Regional Hospital (don't ever go there; worst hospital I've ever been in). He came in with three students/interns. He proceeded to ask me if I knew what conversion syndrome was. I assured him I did, and that was not the cause of my problems (episodes of paralysis and weakness). He spent about 20 minutes trying to convince me of this "diagnosis." He left saying he would return later with a medication he wanted me to try. He never did return. It turns out I was correct and Dr De Ruijter was wrong. I have a metabolic disorder called Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis. Dr De Ruijter showed a complete lack of professionalism in this instance. Conversion syndrome is a diagnosis of exclusion; so only when ALL other possibilities have been ruled out, is this diagnosis considered. The ONLY test I had at Brandon Hospital was a CT scan of my brain to rule out a stroke. That's it. Furthermore, by bringing in 3 other people when he was going to say something to me that he should have known would be upsetting was very thoughtless. I felt like an animal in a zoo. For this atrociously wrong "diagnosis" and poor treatment, my insurance company was charged $450! And I am supposed to pay $15. In no other "business" would you have to pay to have someone tell you something completely wrong and completely ignore best practices. Shame on you, Dr De Ruijter!

I’ve been to other offices, who made me feel like I was a freak and bothersome. I was so desperate and I was blessed to meet Dawn who cared enough to make sure I was taken care of by someone amazing! I’ve never been with such a kind, peaceful and CONSISTENT Dr. When I see him, I feel a Weights been lifted off my shoulders.
