I arrived at the residence with severe depression and anxiety, at 62 years of age I had never experienced any of these conditions. I had no idea what was happening to me and I was in a very distressed state. After 5 weeks of relatively continuous therapy I started to feel better, after 7 weeks I was ready to get on with my life.
I attribute my success to Homewood's professional and caring psychiatrist, psychologists and CBT , DBT therapy programs.
Though I can’t mention everyone who helped me get back on my feet, Dr Douglas, Dr Lyons, Michelle, Kyla, Monica, Chris and Julie are all wonderful caring people. Additionally the nursing staff are first rate, the chefs and cleaning staff were all very kind.
Homewood can’t cure you, they can however provide intensive psychiatric and psychological care to help you get back to your life. They will teach you the tools that you need to cope with your illness. I learned it takes a lot of willpower, hard work and belief in their programs to make yourself better.
Homewood is not perfect, though most of the issues are with the facility, staff time management could be improved and the number of patients at maximum capacity should be reduced. The house and meeting /counselling areas would suit 6 patients at most and not 9. At 9 patients plus staff the house becomes very congested and group therapy sessions become diluted. The cleaning staff do a very good job keeping the facility clean. The rooms are nice but it can get noisy at night when there are 9 patients walking the halls. The food is good but too rich, there should be healthier low calorie options. There should be more emphasis on personal training to stay fit and the addition of a hot tub or sauna would be beneficial for those suffering from anxiety.
Homewood is expensive but worth every dollar as my time there probably saved my life.
If you are seriously ill, as I was, I would recommend you go, I don’t know where else you can get this level of therapy in Canada.
