I was there for 4 months and it was the worst place i have ever been the therapist claim they help you but they don't come and say they do to your parents thr nurses and bc are really rude. One nurse refused to go get my medicine that i had to take everytime i eat so i went without eating for a whole day and i was starving. My stuff came up missing they lost my stuff my roomate stole my stuff and they didn't do anything at all. They are fake. Do not send your kids here. PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE!
I still have nightmares, I still have weight problems, I am still traumatized from the 8 months I was there in 2011! Dr. Davidow always gave me the creeps, he touched me inappropriately and it doesn't surprise me that he is under investigation as well as the hospital itself. PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR KIDS IF THEY ARE AT CUMBERLAND, THEY ARE TRULY SUFFERING! I KNOW, I WAS ONE OF THEM! I begged my mom to come get me, but the therapist and doctors put on a facade and made my mom think I was just saying things so I could leave! PLEASE DON'T SEND YOUR CHILD HERE!!!
How is this place still running?
My mom was going to send my brother here and I read her the reviews and she was like ummmm I’m not sending my child there the heck
Worst care .
Cumberland Hospital has amazing staff and various departments and specialties that help children from all over the world. Cumberland treats both mind and body as a whole because they believe a child’s health is impacted by all aspects of his or her life. This integrated approach contributes greatly to the success of its patients. Thank you Cumberland for your commitment to your patients and their families. ❤️
Worst place in the world to bring anyone here. They talk the good talk at the beginning, but do the exact opposite. My son stayed there for months and was threatened and abused several times. Will be suing the hospital!
This program saved my family. I couldn't have been more pleased with the help we received. I highly recommend this facility. It doesn't get any better than this
Run for the hills: I worked in the housekeeping department. I love my job , according to my Manager I didn't do anything right or at all. I was bullied almost every day, he dont know how to talk to people, and if we are shot Manager will not help you. I worked from 12pm to 8:30pm. Just me and he put so much work on me I couldn't do it all. The staff complain all the time about nothing. Dont take a day off you will come back and it will fill like you did nothing. You will have to catch your work up.
Horrible place. I worked there for 2 weeks and could not deal with the traumatic experience they put these kids through. No structure no nothing just existing.
After speaking with Alan Tager at NAPNAP I would recommend to any healthcare provider to consider this med/psych resource for your challenging cases
Child neglect and abuse
I am writing this letter because I personally was affected by a child that benefited from this hospital. This young man had been in several different programs without success. His parents were very taxed to say the least. I watched the family struggle for a number of years. They relocated to a small town in Maryland. Their extended family still lived here and still came to my facility for their automotive needs. Shortly after the relocation they were at a local health care facility where they met a woman from Cumberland Hospital. She was very informative and knowledgeable. She helped them through every step to get help for their son. The unique environment had many different approaches to help their child with his complex needs. He had found new opportunities at Cumberland. They understood the unique psychological, social and behavioral challenges that often interfere with successful treatment. After he returned home from the Cumberland hospital the family life had improved immensely. They had found ways to help and teach him to function in environment’s he otherwise could not in the past. When they returned to my facility the changes I witnessed were beyond belief.
The wrost one my son went their due to because of behavioral issues and diabetes the doctors there seem like they have no idea what they are talking about their has been several thing that he came with went missing they treated him unfairly we pulled him out due to because every time we visited him his behavior seem to get wrost the therapist there refused to work with him they prefer to tell him that he was wrong and he should just learn to listen rather then yelling at the staff it was very inappropriate what the staff was doing their they need to be shut done
I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy I had a rough time most of the staff treated us as only a paycheck some were amazing like all of the physical therapist and the usual staff on unit 2 but someone recently told me most of the good staff has left, such a shame don't make the mistake of sending your kids here
I was there for 9 months a teen I had a eating disorder and problems with my anger the nurses don't know what they are doing the school you don't learn we watched a bunch of DVD and i got hit on by my teacher that was 10 years ago I hope they got better they did more harm than good
I was here for almost 8 months...the only good thing about the place is the therapist and behavioral counselors ..they are the only ones who care
My teen son was there for 5 months. They definitely helped her his meds and aggressive behaviors correct. My son is ADD & ADHD. TSome unit staff could use more training on how to keep their unit more calm. I have been pleased with this facility for the most part. Also, a specific "case coordinator" could be less condescending when speaking to everyone, especially parents, period.
Awful place
I have nightmares about this place
My daughter was there for 7 months for an eating disorder from food poisoning. The staff abused her physically which I have photographs of, bullied her mentally by staff and other patients. Let her sit and rot for 4 months, diagnosed her with conversion disorder which they diagnose all the children there with that diagnosis. The have an illegal patient to staff ratio. I had various staff members state to me that the facility keeps the kids as long as they can for their insurance money. My daughter was traumatized more from her experience there. The medical director made my daughter uncomfortable by petting her hair during an exam, there have been other allegations against him for inappropriate behavior. The psychologist assigned to my daughter tried to convince her she suffered a past trauma which didn’t exist. Very disgusting hospital. The children sleep on plastic mattresses, and the facility is very dirty. My child ended up getting lice before she was discharged. Definitely under no circumstances should you allow your child to be admitted there. They medically kidnap children. The facility showed be shut down.
I love working for Cumberland Hospital! It is very rewarding!
Words cannot express the appreciation that my family Has for every person on staff at Cumberland Hospital.
One star because they dont show the respect to our country by bringing in the US flag during bad weather
That place sucks
just a terrible place. I was there and my name is Dominick Smith. some staff had big egos and thought they could restrain the residents easily in the RTC program and im not a fan of authority. a lot of the staff mainly the female staff had trouble restraining 5 out of the 8 residents in the RTC one day and a lot of staff were called, i was 1 of the 3 residents that stayed out but its sad that 20+ staff cant restrain 5 residents in under 10 minutes. they sent me to jail after i hurt one of the male staff another day in which i drew blood but i thought these staff members were supposed to be strong enough to do their job? i guess not and the funny thing is this male staff member looked down on me because i had autism and tried to be extra nice to me and treat me differently. food was ok although it took a while for them to give me more portions because one servings were not enough for me and i have a big appetite. this place has school which is one of the good things about this place and both of the teachers were nice so that was good. overall cumberland was ok but never had quality attributes
My grandson just got out. He is non verbal and was always cut and scraped and bruised. They managed to lose 1 brand new coat and two pair of shoes..how does that happen. And by the way when asked about the injuries the answer was always the Sam ....WE DONT KNOW.. Mmmmmmm fishy! Also would like to know why the seam as been cut out of the backside of all of his pants. The butt in ALL of his pants was cut wide open. New pants!!! A jumpsuit he had been put in that was 3 sizes bigger than he looked as though it had been through a grinder. He was literally ripped out of that. I don't know who is doing what at Cumberland but I will find out.
Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents is a beautiful facility in New Kent County on the lovely Pamunkey River. The family lodge for visiting families overlooks the river. For many years they have provided treatment for some of the most challenging combinations of medical and emotional problems of children. The staff is caring and knowledgeable and experienced.
they abuse kids dont swent them their
DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO THIS HOSPITAL!!!!!! My son was treated for aggressive behaviors and the staff did absolutely nothing but reinforce those behaviors during his stay. They did not follow my child's behavior plan issued by Kennedy Krieger. None of the goals set by the hospital were met upon discharge. The hospital stated that they could not change his behavior...what the heck are they doing for these children then??? The hospital has extremely poor communication skills, and does not do what they say that they are doing. All of my child's belongings were either lost or given to other patients, after they made me write his name on everything with a permanent marker. The hospital nursing staff never ensured the proper hygienic needs of my child. His toe nails were so long that they started to penitrate the skin on his feet. The staff neglected to identify and treat a skin infection that developed at the hospital. In addition, his blood work after discharge revealed toxic levels of the medication that was administered by Cumberland hospital. The Dr Daniel Davidow was never involved with the team meetings, and then passed the blame at the staff for behavior plan no being followed. THANK GOD MY CHILD IS HOME SAFE AND SOUND! This hospital does not have your child's best interest at heart!!
If i could give this hospital, Zero stars i would. This is the worst facility im the world. I suggest not sending your kids here because the staff WILL treat your child like they don’t matter. Both of my sisters went there, they have a terminal illness and were supposed to get help coping with it. Instead, they were bullies by staff and no one will listen to them when they had a problem with staff. The staff cussed at all the girls on the unit and would gossip and make the girls clean actual human poop out of the washing machine. I’m completley disgusted with everyone who works there. This place should be shut down immediately.
This place is horrible don’t send you kids here. I was sent here for anorexia and depression to get better but I got anything but that.
Mr. Alan Tager presented at the Baton Rouge, Louisiana NASW November 2018 Regional Meeting and he was great!! He was personable, engaging, and his PowerPoint presentation was both informative and entertaining. Mr. Tager was very knowledgeable of the content. He was very professional and prompt with planning and communication.
I work for Cumberland and couldn't be more happy about the services we provide for children and their families! It's awesome to see the success of our patients and the satisfaction of their parents. This is such a rewarding job and I'm proud to be a part of the Cumberland Team/Family!!!
DO NOT WORK HERE & DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE FOR PERSPECTIVE EMPLOYEES: Nurses and behavioral counselors, who spend the majority of the time with the patients, get treated very poorly. We are often out of ratio making it dangerous for the staff and the patients. The proper 1:4 ratio is stretched to 1:8 or even 1:10 if a behavioral counselor has to step in as a teacher There are a very small amount of people on the code team that are actually present everyday . These people receive less than an hour of training on how to properly restrain a child . only certain people are on the code team but codes happen throughout the hospital and due short staff the proper people can’t get to the codes. The pay is based upon their impression of you . It was discovered that they would hire people with degrees in other fields (business, biology, etc) and pay them over people with the proper education and experience . Raises are very few and far between and it’s hard to obtain even if you’ve been there for a while Mandation is this places speciality. Specifically 30 minutes before your shift is going to end . They could know there’s a hole in the schedule for a week and will wait til the last second to try to fill it and if they are unable to no one is allowed to leave the hospital so you could be forced to work 16 hours instead of 8 and they will often force a lot of people to work a lot of doubles . This only stops If you inform them that you need extra money , at that time they will strangely start canceling you for all the shifts they need help with FOR PROSPECTIVE PARENTS : The staff are great with the children but management lacks order when then trickles down to staff which in return affect the children . Their schedules are often filled will fillers that they don’t do School mainly consist of coloring and Netflix They’re limited with staff. Which limits what the kids can do such as go outside or on trips
i was a resident 4 or 5 years ago this place was and is HORRIBLE there was one nurse who hated me i dont know why and lot of the BCs are rude and the bathrooms are disgusting this place is also very unsafe cops came to my unit several times because of violence and suicide attempts i had to change rooms because one of my room mates said she was going to kill me in my sleep DONT SEND YOUR KID HERE
This is Jack Shelkin the Cumberland legend there for OCD and an eating disorder i am the only patient ever to have punched DR .Davidow and Val etc.... i went through and did so much there from 1/1/17 - 9/25/17 Screw Cumberhell #Screwensure #screwTubes
I was a Behavioral Counselor here several years ago and if the experience was traumatizing for me, I can only imagine what it was like for the patients. I tried hard to be a light a dark place but often feel I failed for not speaking up and truly advocating more for the kids. I am now a mother and would never even consider sending my child here for any treatment, for any period of time. Staff isn't properly trained and many are abusive. Management is poor and treat staff horribly. I have blocked out much of my time there and occasionally still have nightmares that I have to return. Please do not work here and absolutely do not send kids here.
Cumberland helped our kiddo so much. My son (low functioning autism) became very violent towards himself and others resulting in us making the tough decision to send him to Cumberland. He had been in and out of short term treatment at Seattle Childrens which just wasn’t helping. Cumberland turned out to be the best thing for him and our family. He’s back home now and doing better than ever. He’s happy again and really thriving. We lived in Seattle while he was there which was tough but Cumberland was the only facility that could accommodate his needs. We were turned away by every other facility in the nation. I hope he never has to go back but I’m comforted in knowing they’re there if we need them. Thank you Cumberland!
This place is absolutely horrible. My daughter was bitten the first five minutes she was there. She went there for and eating disorder and anxiety, by the Director of Psychiatry at Scottish Rite Children's hospital in Atlanta, I absolutely think the only reason he sent her there they paid him to suggest there facility. This is just a mental hospital for children that can't live in society. My daughter was made to eat something that she doesn't eat and has always hated she got sick and they made her clean it up, no gloves just a towel. She was there for three days and didn't see a doctor or psychiatrist. DON'T RECOMMEND YOU SEND YOUR CHILD HERE IF YOU CAN HELP IT.
Cumberland is the most unique and complete full service Residential Treatment Program for teenage boys and girls anywhere. It is a great place to send a struggling teen. Thank you so very much for being there for our teens and their families, and for the incredible work you do with and for the kids. We’ll be forever grateful, My Grandson is much more positive and in control of his emotions which certainly wasn’t the case a few months ago.” Thank You Ms Wilkins for all you hard work and support
DO NOT send your kid here!! I was there it is the most terrible place ever! They do nothing to help you!
i was an eating disorder patient that went there last year. i went in very sick and i was put on a 24 hour feeding tube along with a wheel chair and heart moniter for at least a month and a half. the staff tried to understand everyones illness and where very good with the kids. some staff there were very mean to us as patients but there was at least 2 good staff workers per shift. they helped me with my eating disorder but they over fed eating disorder pateints alot of the time.
This place is horrible my daughter has began to pick on herself all over her body due to increased anixty attacks from being there they have her sleeping on a mattress on the floor they dont supervise her treatments they picks on her by laughing at her and just gave her a simple sorry they gave took her things like her necklace that just disappeared no one knowes where it went after they took it they dont soicalize with the kids i have caught then several times sitting on there phones and to make matters worst when i confronted one of the staff member heather she looked at myself and my 15 yr old whom was visting with her sister stared us down with a mean look and belittled what we where saying i thought i was going to snap i am not going to stop here i will do what i can and go thru whom i have to to bring this place down POOR KIDS.
—Sharing from my other account so this will be seen— Do not send your children here. The staff are overworked and desensitized to the patient's needs. I am still getting messages to this day about those who have been to this place telling me about their stories and about how investigators are going undercover to figure out what's going on beyond closed doors.Me and many others have been trying to be the voice for those who are afraid to speak for themselves. This is what we have been trying to say. Our voices won't be silenced.
The presentation on the services provided by Cumberland Hospital was helpful and informative. The presentation was interactive and thorough. The speaker (Alan) was very knowledgeable and answered all questions thoroughly. I would recommend their services.
As a new employee I feel very welcomed. The staff is like a family unit and that is important for these children to succeed. The campus is beautiful, and filled with positive energy keeping the children’s well being the most important.
Stay far away from this place. With the investigations going on this hospital will be closed soon have fun lossing your jobs a holes.
I was a patient here for ~100 days from fall 2014 through early 2015. I cannot warn against this place enough. please, please do not send your children here. there’s a group on facebook full of other patients I was hospitalized with, all that is talked about is how terrible this place was, how they treated us, the level of actual attention and care we received, how many of us still have nightmares. cumberland hospital TRAUMATIZES their patients. there are many reasons why this hospital is currently under investigation— just google “cumberland hospital investigation.” I hope with all my heart this place gets shut down, the corrupt members of the staff barred from practicing, and children can stop being hurt by what happens here. this is a glorified juvenile detention center. while there were a small handful of genuinely caring and kind staff (nutritionist, a few therapists, a few nurses, and the younger morning techs— not the older night ones who just needed someone to pick on and something to pay the bills) most of the employees here have NO business seeing over the wellbeing of children. this place is characterized by negligence and downright abuse. Dr. Davidow is a nasty creep. he has been under investigation from prior times in his career, I have no idea why he would be allowed to be the head doc at a children’s hospital. my good friend still cannot hear his name or see people that resemble him without experiencing full blown panic attacks. upon intake, I had to go into a separate room with him *without my parents* so he could conduct a “physical exam.” he took my pulse via a femoral pulse, on the groin right next to my private area... for no reason, why would he not use my neck or wrist when I was not injured to the point of having no other detectable pulse? aside from that awful initial intake, I never saw the man unless it was at a group meeting to discuss care plans. many girls on the same unit as me had similar stories. none of us felt safe around that man. the older evening techs who would watch over us were awful. I hated when it would hit 3/4pm and shift change would happen. one tech named Estelle made patients cry on the regular, would scream at us, and would sit in the bathroom and fart nonstop while chaperoning showers. sounds hilarious, but when you’re taking your alloted 5-10 mins in the shower in a moldy tub and this cruel woman is p much pooping her pants in a steamy bathroom the situation loses its humor. the evening techs were grumpy and bitter. we were children suffering from severe mental illness, living away from our families, friends, and contact with the outside world, working through internal struggles, facing family troubles, living a half life completely dictated by others... we deserved so much better from our caretakers. the children who are still there, the new ones that will be hospitalized, deserve so much more than the terror cumberland offers. the majority of our “care” was in half as*ed groups, where we weren’t really doing much useful work. I met one on one with my therapist for less than an hour ONCE a week. this is inadequate to actually work through deep seated issues at a consistent rate, which is why the average stay is over 3 months— but it gets those who profit off our illnesses quiteeee a bit of insurance money. we attended groups where we learned about healthy choices of food (many patients were diabetic or had severe under/over eating disorders) but then we’d go to the cafeteria and regularly be served frozen brown foods, fried, lacking in nutrients, and nothing like the balanced portions or quality foods we learned about in groups. make that make sense! it is a shame that we do not have adequate mental health care and access to care in this country, and we need more options for people, especially children, to get the care they need. cumberland is not an example of this care. something has to happen. to those still working there, the ones who contributed to the nightmare, just know that what you’re doing and allowing to be done to CHILDREN will not be without consequence.
I was a Patient Here about 6 months ago. Id like to point out to all the bad reviews that this place really helped me alot. The Staff Treated me Well, id like to point out the Staff is also really nice, They Only will do bad things if they feel you did something wrong or go crazy. At The End of The Day My Treatment Was Great! i cant complain.
I had the pleasure of listening to Alan Tager, Cinical Liason for Cumberland Hospital, present on Behavior Related to Chronic Illness in Children and Adolescents in Monroe County, Florida. I enjoyed the interactive process for learning and he was able to deliver a very difficult topic in a meaningful but entertaining way as to not lose anyone's attention. TJ Goldberg, RN, CCM
Recently Alan Tager came to speak to our group of social workers about the program at Cumberland hospital. He was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the children he serves. I think this is a great resource for children with complex issues.
This place is hell on earth. My cousin sought help for her son and he was abused by that help. They will pay...
i went here for anger issues. it was the worst. i was afraid i would get injured or worse die the amount of people there caused terrible stomach bugs. and i remember quite well that the staff would hurt or even injure kids i only remember one good therapist but he retired. if you do not want your kids to be injured dont send em here
My son went to Cumberland for his behaviors at home and school. He is doing really good currently. The communication and the out patient the staff set up were really hopeful.
My daughter was impatient due to her Type I Diabetes. Dr. Davidow and the Cumberland team did a great job with teaching her the proper way to care for her diabetes. She is doing a lot better at school as well as home.
This facility does not treat patients in a positive manor and instead teaches them complacency with there illness.Everyday there is fights and a very unstable environment as well as a fair amount of unprofessionalism. Often children were kept far longer than need be for financial gain. The units are very unsanitary and more than likely your child will get worse here.
No one cares about the kids
THIS PLACE NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN! DONT TAKE YOUR KIDS HERE!
I had a relative that went to Cumberland to lose weight. He lost a lot of weight while at Cumberland and continues to do well at home. He is doing good at school and home. Thank you Cumberland!
Horrible place. This is the worse facility my child has ever been too. She is currently here for an eating disorder and has been there for 7 months. It seems like they want to keep her forever she still has no discharge date. They like to milk the insurance for everything they can. This place has added to my daughter’s PTSD. She has severe panic attacks since being here and staff try to antagonize her every chance they get. Also when they see her doing well it seems as though they wanna kick her back down. They want her to stay down so they can collect that 38,000 a month!
On admission day, we met with the team that would be working with our grandson, and we discussed all of his medical issues. What we most appreciated was the truth, directness, and openness that we heard that day. Because of the medical issues that our grandson has, we were told that he would never be "100%, but that they would work with him to help him be better than he currently was. "Out of all of the issues that needed to be addressed, our grandson's aggression was top priority. Dr. Davidow changed his medications which was a blessing. Also, it was noted that his weight was too high and a special diet was instituted. During the three month stay he hit his target weight and the change in medication to address the aggression has certainly helped our grandson. The team of nurses, therapists, counselors, and support staff did as we were told. Our grandson was always taken care of, and he learned how to make adjustments to stressful triggers in his life. His unit nurse, Mandy, and his therapist, Demitra, were exceptional. They were always available when our grandson needed extra support. We had family therapy via telephone every week. In addition, every two weeks, we had a group team meeting by telephone to discuss his goals and progress. There was never a time that we did not know what was going on with our grandson. The entire staff was supportive, kind, and always respectful of our grandson and us. The staff at Cumberland has a difficult job daily, and they are a unique group of individuals that want to help our troubled teens. On discharge day, Mandy, Sarah, and Demitra all said "if we needed them to call." We have their continued support if needed. We are grateful to Cumberland for the progress that our grandson made, for helping our home life to become more peaceful and for helping us to become a family again.
As a military family I genuinely appreciated the staff from admissions to the medical staff. The professional yet compassionate care for our child has changed our futures. Thank you all!
The doctor I had here in Roanoke a long time was also my doctor at Marion state hospital and she sent me to Cumberland and I hated it.
My son was at Cumberland 6 months ago he is doing very good at home and school. Dr. Davidow and the staff did a great job to reduce his aggression to himself and others. My son is still using his coping strategies that the staff taught him. Thank you!!!
Cumberland Hospital is the best thing that could have happened to us. They didn't just care about my child; the treated my child and me like family. I could call any time of the day or night and staff on the unit would tell me how my son was doing and how his day was going. They were a supportive community and like a family. We didn't just get better, we learned to be better as a family.
So don't be fooled by the new 5 star reviews put on this page as most of them are by staff or people paid to do so so if you are a parent considering admitting your child here think again well i was there for 5 months last year and i was segregated from general population for 3and a half out for the 5 months and i was miserable . The doctors didn't care about my input on my medication or how i felt about them they just said when i tried to talk to them about it u are med seeking. Also Doctor David Dowed try to tell me i was gay and I am not ,also the bathrooms are very dirty. O i almost forgot if u do get put on precautions you most likely will never get off until u get discharged and u can't go on the little outings they go on. I must also say Doctor Val is a idiot even to the medical world she should not be practicing in a children's hospital she is inconsiderate and rude to anyone that has the gut to stand up to her, she also lies and tells you half truths. By the way if you are not in the RTC program you will not see a psychiatrist you will see a therapist and patricians. So they have a one size fits all psych meds outlook .
Just a quick note of thanks to Alan Tager of Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescence. We enjoyed his topic on medically complex children with co-occurring, challenging behaviors. Alan’s presentation was clear, concise and captivating and will be used as a resource going forward.
Was there at the age of 18 in 1989 for JV Diabetes. The head doctor was very dedicated and cared. They got it under control in two months. Dr Selman was great to. I will never forget them
After spending a few minutes reading the other reviews i saw many similarities and most of my concerns. I've witnessed the staff using inappropriate language towards the children and a lack of supervision from the nursing staff on 6B. This hospital reminds me of a Mental Hospital. If your looking for a feeding program for your child stay far away from this place.
I would like to keep my identity on this review anonymous, but I was a patient at this hospital years ago. It was very traumatizing for me, as I was not there for anything mental/neurological. I was there for weight loss. The staff there were so cruel and demeaning to all of the patients, our food was what I would imagine jail food is like, and the facility was never very clean. The only cleaning came from the patients doing their chores. I witnessed many patients be restrained in horrible ways, for doing something simple as not listening to a behavior counselor. I witnessed a girl hanging from a ceiling there, because she attempted suicide. Her reasons were she could not stand being there anymore, at the hospital. All staff did was put her in an empty room for 48 hours, nothing more, nothing less. There were romantic relationships among the patents + staff, which is not ok, due to the fact that most of the patients are all underage. I will never forget the terrible things I experienced there, and the mental abuse I had to deal with from staff. Dr. Davidow was honestly a very eerie person. During physical exams, he would slide his hands in places that don't need to be touched etc. Thinking of this place truthfully scares me, I still have nightmares hear and there about it. If any parent is reading this, I beg you, do not send your child here. They will not be treated with care + respect.
This is the worst hospital on the face of the Earth. The nurses treat all of the kids very poorly. The nurses take away some of their kids rights (for example: They will take people off of kids call lists for no reason and won’t give any notice to the children or their parents). This place needs to be shut down. I am disgusted that there is such a place in this country.
To the staff of Cumberland Hospital ...As my granddaughter prepares to leave your facility after 16 months, I want to say Thank You. Thank You for taking such good care of her and treating her and us as family. Everyone we came in contact with treated us with warmth, kindness and respect. I know that she wasn't the easiest child to deal with sometimes, however, she has a big heart, a sharp mind and has dealt with a lot of bad things in her life. You guys saw through all of that, validated her and the experiences that made her the way she was and taught her to accept them, learn from them and move through them to a new life. Again Thank You. CMF
Positive experience working with Cumberland. Clinical team was a pleasure to work with. I will refer to them in the future.
As a mother there is no greater fear or crushing feeling then not being able to protect your child. The most devastating call that a mother can receive is that their child has been involved in an accident. My son was involved in a horrible accident and hearing the doctors come in and tell me that he had a traumatic brain injury was crushing. The team at Cumberland we’re lifesavers helping myself and my son come to terms with his condition. Though my baby is changed forever. He is alive and with us. I am forever grateful to the staff at Cumberland who made this mother come to terms with this painful reality. My son is living the best life possible and learning to cope because of you all. From the bottom of my heart. Thank you.
My experience with Cumberland was at most mediocre. The front office staff and managing doctor are very professional and responsive. The front office facilities are very nice and clean. However, the same cannot be said for the patient quarters. The patient rooms, common areas, and bathrooms are dirty, disorganized, and not maintained. The staff caring for the patients on a daily basis are unprofessional to family members and patients. Safety of the patients is not a number one priority in my opinion. Food was decent and well portioned. I would not recommend this center for TBI treatment. Seems to be an add on service. While the doctors and therapists may be trained the nursing staff is not. Since these are the people who have the most contact with the patients I believe they should have considerable training in all the different type of patients they will be interacting with. In my opinion that is not the case at this center.
I recently had a client at Cumberland Hospital and she did very well. The staff communication was great and discharge plan was helpful for my client since services in rural VA are limited.
I went here about 4 years ago and afew of my friends that went here killed themselves after they got out Riding bikes and walking to the little swamp area and the train were what we used to do and there's a pool open in the summer if you have good behavior you can go I'm only 16 now but it really didnt help the only reason it has 3 stars is because I met some really great people
DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE. This is a horrible place. The staff treat you like you are not a human being. They just throw you around. I was there to experience it. I got restrained and a staff member grabbed my hair and repeated to slam my head against a wall. They tell lies and yell at you for no reason. The rights they say that your child can have is not true. They dont care about anything. Most patients can get away with everything. Fights are happening because staff do not monitor enough. They dont specialize in eating disorders. They dont specialize with anything. So please dont take your children here. You are just wasting your money... and if you dont believe me and go on, please look through your childs luggage because many things are brought in such as vapes and phones
I had the opportunity to speak with Alan Tager, Clinic Liaison, for Cumberland Hospital. I was not aware that med/psych services were available. I am excited that that they are a Medicaid provider for children. I would encourage all case managers to utilize this wonderful resource.
This is the best place every.the staff cares .they are way better then Vertices.you can be in team meetings.this is also my son's 5th hospital.it's also way better then chop
This place was extremely hurtful. I had an amazing therapist but this place really sucked. I tried to work on myself, but the screaming, table and chair throwing, and fights, it was all just too overwhelming. It hurt me more than helped. There are only a couple good staff there but i got frustrated with most. I slept under my desk once because i was afraid to get hurt. If you send your child here willingly or not, it will hurt them but just listen to them.
I am a social worker from the southwest area and had a young girl in the residential program. The staff did a great job with her and she is back living with her foster family. The small residential setting is a plus.
I have nightmares about my time here as a child..I witnessed staff host fights between units, a staff member arrested for molesting a female patient during morning showers, in my unit we had to deal with a kid who randomly Attacked people..he got beat up, but bit Me In the process. There was a guy who would s*** in the showers and staff wouldn’t clean it. This place puts on a great facade for parents, even the pictures on here are only of the lobby not the actual units or the shared rooms with half a closet worth of storage space. I was involved in at least 3 fights, and saw tons more. Some staff would sneak under-age patients cigarettes, as long as they had the level that allowed them to walk around ( I believe level 3). Multiple escape attempts, suicide attempts, this place will scar your children. It is more like a juvenile prison than a helpful facility.
I have worked at Cumberland Hospital for the past 6 years and had referred patients for 12 years prior. I find that the majority of our patients can make supported life style changes if they and their parents can stay the course. One of our goals is to mentor our patients to not let their Diagnosis define them. They learn through supportive measures to manage their symptoms, take their medication and learn how to co-exist with their medical situation. Once these lifestyle changes are made, they are happier with their lives which reflect positively in their school work, home life and social situations. Unfortunately, there is no cure for chronic illness in children, but we can help them accept who they are, adapt and move forward.
If only I could give this place a zero! I have personal experience here, among some of the things I saw where staff neglect, fecal matter on the walls of the restroom that remained there for days, suicide, suicide attempts from patients misery and hopelessness, poor medical attention (no emergency service) and as a patient there, I was prescribed the wrong medication, and even accidentally given other paitens medication on multiple occasions. I wake up in the middle of the night screaming from nightmares caused by that place sometimes, I constantly felt unsafe inside of the facility and my family could barley come to my unit due to the same reasons. Not a single patient I knew was happy with their experience. I hope that no one ever has to be sent here again one day, please, if you are considering sending your child here, there are many MANY other, much better hospitalization options to look at.
I hated everything about this place. They did way more damage than good to my child
Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents has been very helpful in the care of our patients with brain injuries and associated neurocognitive and neurobehavioral difficulties as well as our patients that have been struggling with chronic disease management because of associated behavioral and psychiatric difficulties. Cumberland provides the comprehensive inpatient treatment services that these children require. Cumberland also provides detailed aftercare plans. Our patients and their families have provided positive reviews of their experience at Cumberland. I think that we are fortunate to have a facility like Cumberland in our area.
I was an employee at Cumberland Hospital for almost 10 years. This facility treats patients that no one else will touch! I currently work in other psych facilities and they would NEVER take the patients with the medical complications that Cumberland deals with. Please remember that this patient population is primarily defiant, refuses treatment, and are often aggressive. Cumberland deals with these behavioral issues while maintaining medical stability. I have had the most positive professional moments of my career at Cumberland! Helping a child and knowing you have made a difference in their life is the most rewarding experience! While working at at Cumberland I was trained how to safely handle aggressive behaviors while making sure no injury came to the patients. I was also trained OFTEN that patients should not be restrained unless they were a danger to themselves or others. If staff do not follow these practices they are terminated immediately. Patient abuse is not allowed at this facility. If you love to help children and can handle working with a difficult patient population this is an excellent facility to work at.
I was at the end of my rope trying to get help for my 12 year old with explosive/destructive behaviors. Cumberland was there when I needed them. They didn’t tell me she didn’t qualify because she wasn’t doing this or that. The marketing rep (Vickie) listened to our situation in a compassionate manner and gave us a pathway to inpatient treatment and thusly a way to the life we should and could be living. My daughter is becoming again the child I thought I had possibly lost forever. Thank you Cumberland for being there when we needed you.
This place is not even worth one star or any stars. I just googled this place to see if this horror show was still open. Sadly and to the misfortune of many children it is. This pacep should be shut down. My daughter was in here for an eating disorder and this place doesn't even specialize in eating disorders specifically. They have so many different kids in here for so many different things it's not beneficial for the treatment of any thing. My child was in a hostile and violent environment as a few of the patients there would physically assault staff and then within 15 minutes would be allowed back into the dorm area with the other patients. They try and scam the insurance places and keep their patients for as long as possible. I've heard and witnessed so many of the patients there selfharm and attempt suicide in this place. One girl went as far as to swallow batteries and slit her arm all the way up. This place is not a safe, stable, beneficial or medical facility at all. It is a joke and a place that should be shut down. DO NOT SEND YOU KIDS HERE AND KEEP THEM FROM GETTING SENT HERE. PLEASE IF YOUR CHILD IS ILL OR STRUGGLING PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FIND A BETTER PLACE FOR THEM THAN THIS HELLHOLE.
My wife and I have had a terrific ongoing and supportive dialogue with their new patient intake representative, Alan Tager. Mr. Tager is a font of knowledge and encouragement, regarding outpatient programs, admission criteria, and has a genuine passion for T1d struggling teens. He seems to index job satisfaction to helping T1d's adolescents get better! We found Mr. Tager highly accessible and an even higher desire to be useful. What more can one ask.
The staff are incredibly helpful. We work with Cumberland for our patients and can’t say enough about how wonderful they’ve been. Our patients report incredible progress and a very competent and compassionate staff. They work with Tricare Ao they are our go to for our military youth.
I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 years of employment at Cumberland Hospital. All nurses, support staff and admin were always extremely professional and put patient care as their top priority. The facility is clean and always appeared to be extremely well taken care of. During every holiday, they always went above and beyond to make the patients feel as if they were “at home” celebrating. I miss my time there and hope that my schedule will allow me to return one day.
