I've had a positive experience with Meridian and Dr. Romero. He doesn't play games and he tells you what you need to hear to get better. Most reviewers just post their bad experiences, but it's important to remember that we all experience people differently. As with all things in life, what works for me may not work for you. Don't base your healthcare decisions entirely on internet reviews.
I've been going here for a few sessions now with Dr. Sawa, and I'm very happy with her care. She makes me feel very heard, and takes a proactive but conservative approach to medication. I would recommend her highly. As for the front desk staff, I have so far yet to have any negative experiences with scheduling appointments (even as a new patient), dealing with insurance, or checking in, and they have been pleasant and helpful.
I cannot recommend based on their deceptive billing practices and subsequent nonresponsiveness from their billing department. It's just not worth it when so many other places in Chicago are transparent, straightforward, and willing to return phone calls and emails. Do your research before choosing this provider.
My therapist recommended me to this place when I indicated a likely need for a psychiatrist. I called and waited five days for a call back. They set me up with an appt more than a month away and today the doctor just called to cancel. Dr. Sawa made it abundantly clear she didn't care that I had already waited a month for the appt and did not express any interest in knowing whether I would have to wait another month for another appt. I let her know that I thought it was quite discourteous and she said, "Yeah, well, I have a schedule conflict." Was paired with Dr. Dhand following the previous debacle and she has been fantastic.
I've seen three different people here due to maternity leave and one transitioning to do in patient and they've all been great!
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. My provider was clearly fresh out of medical school and did not know what she was talking about. I have had much more comprehensive understanding of mental health from primary care doctors. The office charged me a $200 cancellation fee for an appointment that was never confirmed and now seems to be refusing to call me back around this issue. I have been calling and leaving messages nearly every day for a week and have heard absolutely nothing. A complete disgrace or a medical establishment. I wouldn’t recommend this office to anyone under any circumstance.
Finally, a psychiatrist who truly listens and understands your needs! Dr. Daniel Kim is the FOURTH psychiatrist I have used since 2016 and I feel lucky to have found him. I first used a Doctor under my insurance (very limited psychiatrist resource pool), and was terribly unimpressed. Since my mental health was important, I decided to go the self-pay route and found two more doctors who both HEARD what I was saying, but didn’t truly listen or understand. Dr. Kim is different. He is kindhearted and a real person. When Dr. Kim expresses empathy, I can feel he truly means it and is not robotic like the others. He has helped me feel like a valued patient and I am very impressed with his knowledge of psychiatric conditions and the meds to treat them. My journey to good mental health is far from over, but I feel confident that by working with Daniel Kim, we will find a positive resolution.
Dr Daniel Kim is great
Dr. Wong is bad at her job and doesn't care enough to listen to you, your experience, how you're doing, or that the medications she has prescribed have severe side effects. Also went on vacation for over 2 weeks without notifying me so when I had severe side effects she was impossible to reach. Dr. Romero re-traumatized me. He blamed me for my mental health struggles and spoke me incredibly disrespectfully. He was terrible for my mental health and heightened my desire to end my life. Avoid these expensive quacks at all costs.
My experience with Dr. Eric Yu as a provider has been fantastic, however agreeing with all others posting here, it is impossible to receive an answer from the admin staff. I have called and emailed daily for a week now and have not received a return message. Best course of action is to contact the doctor you're seeing directly.
0 STARS. DR. JORDAN ROMERO DOESN'T CONSIDER HIS PATIENTS BEST INTERESTS. FROM THE START OF THE VIDEO CALL I COULD SEE IN HIS EYES AND FACIAL EXPRESSIONS THAT HE DIDN'T BELIEVE A WORD I WAS SAYING. IF YOU WANT A DOCTOR WHO BELIEVES HE'S A DEMIGOD YET FAR FROM THEN HE'S THE CORRECT CHOICE. IF YOU LIKE BEING PUT BACK ON MEDS THAT HAVEN'T WORKED IN THE PAST THEN DR. ROMEO IS FOR YOU!! I EVEN WENT TO A PSYCHOTHERAPIST AND PERFORMED NUMEROUS TESTS JUST TO PROVE MY DISORDERS YET HE AND HIS CO-DOCTOR WON'T PRESCRIBED ME WHAT I NEEDED AS IT HAS WORKED FOR ME IN THE PAST. NOW MERIDAN HAS SCREWED ME OVER AND I LOST MY JOB AND HOPE. I'M WITHDRAWALING FROM WELLBUTRIN NOW WHILE DR. ROMERO IS ON VACATION AND THE OTHER DOCTOR IN OFFICE REFUSED TO EVEN LOOK AT MY TEST RESULTS. BAD KARMA IS WAITING AROUND THE CORNER FOR YOU DR!! WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND!! AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. PLEASE TRUST ME. THIS PLACE IS A LIVING NIGHTMARE.
Kind and patient! I highly recommend.
$200 for every missed appointment - including those your dr just so happens to decide to not show up to. not worth your time
This place is terrible. Never answer the phone. Completely disorganized, grumpy staff, never willing to do their jobs or offer any help. I have been trying to get them to file a claim with my insurance for almost a year, and they won't. I have offered to come down and help them do it - they never return voicemails and then call every few months to try and collect payment.
I had a terrible experience with the doctor I saw, who I wrote a review for separately. The office staff was helpful over the phone and in person, but when I asked for my diagnosis papers back (which the psychiatrist had held onto for some reason..), I was sent copies. I called and was told that they had shredded my original documents! Overall a very upsetting experience. Avoid them at all costs.
I have been trying to contact this place for the past two weeks. No one has gotten back to me. They require you to leave a voicemail and promise to get back to you no later then 48 hours later ( 2 days ). I have left 3 voice messages and have yet to receive a call back. It’s quite disappointing. I was referred to them by my Primary Physician. I’ll update my review should I have further interactions. However, as of now, this is what I have experienced.
I never post reviews but felt this warranted one, especially considering how important it is to find the right fit for theraputic and psychiatric services. I had a change of insurance between visits and the front desk was thoroughly unhelpful in resolving my billing issue. They demanded I work with the insurance company directly to figure out my claim, though my insurer made clear that it was the responsibility of the office to work directly with them to sort it all out. Without going into too much more detail, I will say that the majority of my encounters with the front desk employees were neutral and unhelpful at best, and negative and outright rude at worst. The last interaction was an email they sent to me in all caps that they weren’t taking my insurance - no call or explanation, just digital verbal abuse. It was totally disrespectful and unprofessional and NOT the type of experience you deserve or need when seeking mental support. While the doctors I worked with were great, the terrible experiences I’ve had with admin is making me look elsewhere going forward.
I saw Rebecca Christophersen at the Evanston location. I was referred to them by a previous therapist, who seemed to think they would be LGBT friendly (they weren't, like, actively homophobic or transphobic, but my eye doctor at a random strip mall is more comfortable using my chosen name than they are, so I would say that's a no). First of all, as others have said, they just want your money. My insurance bills me a $45 specialist copay, which is quite a bit in the first place, and when you look at their actual bills there are two separate charges of over $100 per appointment that they're getting from my BCBS. To be clear, these appointments were me commuting 45 minutes to Evanston to talk to Dr. Christophersen for about 10 minutes about how I'm still fine and my medication is working. There was no psychotherapy component, unless you count being briefly asked about my symptoms. For the medication I'm on, my insurance will allow me to get a year's supply at a time. Meridian put in the prescriptions month-to-month and had me come in every month, even after I was on a stable dose. When I switched medication management to my primary care it was a $25 copay for the appointment and they recommended I come in after 6 months or maybe a year. Secondly, I never felt treated like a person--only as a test subject to have medication shoved at me. I was barely given any kind of screening for any psychological problems, and the only things ever recommended besides medication were unhelpful banalities like "try making a list of what you have to do". I suspected that I had ADHD, and Dr. Christophersen prescribed me Adderall without giving me any kind of testing--for all she knew I could have been making up my symptoms to get a highly controlled substance. She was also consistently dismissive about side effects and withheld information from me. For example, she knew that I drank socially every once in a while, and yet didn't warn me that a medication she prescribed to me had a high risk of causing seizures that was made exponentially worse every time you drank alcohol. In fact, I asked her if it was safe to drink on that medication and she said "oh yeah, just the same as the other one, just be careful at first". When she prescribed me Adderall (which I cancelled after the fact, btw) I expressed concerns such as the addictive properties of stimulants, how it would affect me if I turned out to not in fact have ADHD, how it would interact with my other symptoms, and some of the possible risky side effects. She told me not to worry about any of that and just to go to the hospital if I got chest pains. Avoid Meridian like the plague. Not only all of this, but they seem to never have anyone in their office to answer calls, so it's impossible to schedule and change appointments.
I saw Dr. Sawa. She talked down about the head of sleep neurology, one of my favorite doctors multiple times, went on a rant about how marijuana is terrible (legal recreational and medical), and said she didn't understand why I was sent and that she couldn't do anything for me. She was rude, extremely unprofessional, and a just a terrible practitioner. I HIGHLY recommend NOT seeing her and just avoiding this practice as a whole. Anyone place who would hire her clearly does not have its patients best interest at heart. I would give zero stars if I could.
Very poor experience with Dr. Romero. Did not listen to my needs at all.
Absolutely ridiculous cancellation policy and fee. Staff is disrespectful and very unhelpful. Will be sure to spread the word about the horrible service I am receiving here.
I visit Meridian for my therapy and my psychiatrist (two women). They’re fantastic. I pay a lot of attention to peer reviews and if you’re looking for either service, I highly recommend Meridian. Please don’t let the average score deter you. I started looking from scratch 1.5 years ago and it’s been the best decision since moving to Chicago.
It has taken me over a year to recover from the mental anguish that Meridian caused. My therapist consistently questioned my “dedication to healing” (I have a chronic illness that sometimes does not allow me to leave the house) and told me she was “pissed off at me” during a session because I asked to go down to every other week to focus on my physical health. Not to mention, she placed guilt on me for everything I opened up about and gave me false information (told me 4 glasses of wine per WEEK was “binge drinking”) The front desk staff, specifically Dale, was rude and condescending. He truly made me dread arriving at my appointments each week. Shady business practices. I was covered under my husbands insurance, however they refused to bill his insurance. They would call and threaten me to pay out of pocket and I wound up thousands of dollars in debt and on the phone with insurance for 6+ hours each week to get reimbursed. The best thing I ever did was leave this practice. I didn’t even realize how bad it was until I found a therapist that explained how awful their treatment was. They will bully you, mentally, emotionally and financially.
