I chose Dr. Backstein for a gynecomastia procedure after meeting with several cosmetic surgeons in Toronto. When I met him, he was noticeably down to earth and thoroughly answered all my questions. I never felt pressured by him to do the procedure - he wanted to make sure it was the right decision for me. He always wore scrubs, even in the first consult, which to me was comforting and an indication that he wasn't going to be pushy or greedy. As agreed upon, he was conservative with his approach, so as to limit risk of necrosis that would increase with an overly-aggressive approach. After surgery, he was very responsive to my inquiries about bleeding and healing. The results were astonishing and truly noticeable after a few months. It was an excellent experience overall and I would recommend him for a cosmetic or minor surgery procedure.

Dr. Robert Backstein botched my minimally invasive gynecomastia surgery very badly. The damage/irregularities he caused to my chest are permanent and will cost me $21,000.00 to just try to improve the look and the success of the revision surgery is of low probability. My chest muscles still hurt two years post surgery. He failed to remove my gland on the right side, didn't mark my body with a pen or go over the surgical plan with me. He liposuctioned all the way to my clavicle, armpit, edge of pec muscle and front shoulder. He did this more aggressively on the left side causing very noticeable asymmetry. I lost a good amount of muscle strength in my left pec muscle and front shoulder. The total amount of fat suctioned from both sides of my entire chest area was only 50 milliliters (10 teaspoons). If you google image search liposuction canister you will see fat floats to the top of the canister where it is measured everything else sinks. This fool scraped away type II muscle, fascia and important connective tissue.. Do not fall for his superficial charm, he is a malicious monster. After he has your money he will do whatever he wants to you. I made it clear what I wanted done and he did the exact opposite without my consent. Liposuction was only supposed to be done if there was unevenness after taking the glands out to feather the area around the nipples (not my entire chest). Humber River Hospital the hospital I had my surgery in didn't even have any pre-op rooms available; from the waiting area I was brought right into the operating room, disrobed and told to wait for Dr. Backstein to arrive. It was awkward standing there watching the nurses and anesthesiologist prepare for my surgery. When he arrived he only took a couple of poorly done photographs of my chest at extreme close ups and no photographs were taken from the sides, arms raised, arms behind back or flexing before putting me under the knife. He also lied to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and told them that he had marked me while I was awake and standing. When I made my complaint against him to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario they didn't even interview the nurses and anesthesiologist to ask them if they remembered me being marked up. Soon after when I told him I was going to sue he took down his website called Cosmetic Surgery Toronto and redirected all his visitors to his new site called The Centre for Minor Surgery. On his Cosmetic Surgery Toronto website Dr. Robert Backstein stated he was a fully qualified Toronto board certified plastic surgeon. Very soon I will have my website open to the public. There you will be able to read my College of Physician and Surgeons of Ontario complaint, see pictures of my botched chest and listen to all recorded conversations I had with Dr. Robert Backstein. Like the other reviewer said "if you could see what he has done to me you would never hire him, NEVER"

Dr. Backstein is a kind, caring doctor who has skill to match, Years ago he did a tummy tuck for me that was truly life changing, I am still amazed at how well the procedure went and how it has affected my life for the better. Of course when I recently decided to have some moles removed from my face there was only one doctor I would trust. That procedure was done recently but al always Dr. Backstein was excellent, kind and explained the procedure in an easy way. So far so good with the healing as well.

I have wait several years to leave a review for this man. He ruined my life no one should ever see this man for any kind of surgery he is the worst I don't know how he is allowed to practice cosmetic surgery. I had breast and tummy tuck he ruined me for life. Belly button death is what he did which no more belly button cause he did not fasten it in place the scar other plastic surgeons laughed at his job and they have never saw a scar like this and many other issues he should be ashamed of what he has done to people and do not bother commenting after my review that you don't know me and make my review look fake u had a office on steeles with the most rude secretary I ever met now u shut down I believe which u should not be allowed to be near any person or a knife ever and then I see you now work for Toronto dermatology which is upsetting cause I'm a patient their and if your working there i will find a new dermatologist I read what they had to say about you and none of it is honest you are not good at your job you don't know how to do good plastic surgery you should never operate on people again so I hope if someone is trying to decide if you should do their surgery that they see this review and decide to see a real plastic surgeon and not come to you cause they will regret it forever. Stop practicing medicine find a new type of job that don't involve people's appearances or bodies. If I could give 0 I would I was not going to leave a review until I found out that u work at my dermatologist and it really upset me I do not ever want to see u or run into you in my life your not a doctor in any way I found lots of reviews from other people's lives you have destroyed you know what you were suppose to be like a assistant to a surgeon the guy who hands the doctor his scalpel or the person who makes appointments for real doctors maybe gets them lunch or coffee that was about all you should have been able to do when it comes to medicine

I'm a patient with a physical anomaly and was mistreated during my procedure with physician Backstein. He was offensive and made several attempts to try and make me feel inferior through verbal and non-verbal behaviour. He had the gall to use my body to rest his tools like it was furniture when his rolling trolley was right next to him. I was uncomfortable the entire time under his scrutiny and caution others with visible health problems to reconsider treatment with this physician. He has a carefully curated reputation as seen on rateMD - and to him - this appears to give license to tyrannize unsuspecting patients entrusting him with their care. Be cautious around this "medical professional".
