If you happen to die at the Health and Science Center, chances are that wasnt the worst thing that happened to you during your visit. The receptionists were childishly rude and the nurses were arrogant and ignorant. The sitting room was dirty and falling apart. If you can avoid it, don't go here.

Currently seating in the emergency room and it has already been 5 hours waiting at the ER and we still haven't seen anyone. I can see at least 5 people that were here before i arrived. This is the second time we have come here as the last time we took a good 10 hours here and made a complaint over email that ofcourse fell on deaf eyes with no response. Honestly, we can do better than this!!!

First two times went in with my mom, we waited 12hours for each visit. The ridiculous issue is that a woman with sever abdominal pain was treat as non sever patient. For 12 hour of wait, the doctor only gave her NaCl and sent us straight back home. The next day, we waited another 12 hours, until, my mom pains was intolerable and they sent us in and was admitted for 4 days. This times, I went in, waited for 5 hours with still 5 people in front me, only 1 Doctor on call, no nurse practitioner. Each patients approximately takes an hour or two in the emergency room plus people coming in with more serious conditions buds in. I probably won't be seen by a doctor until 6 hours later when there's 2 doctors on call or 9 hours later when the fast tract opens. When people come into emergency, they actually need an immediate help. When you ask emergency patients to wait for 6 hours or longer, it's no longer about physical discomfort, but about emotional distress, and the dissappintment in St.John's emergency system. Plus, the entire city I believe has only 2 emergency hospitals. When people require immediate treatment, what should we do? Wait until eventually after 12 hours we'll be treated for few minutes as minor issue and sent back home? And comes back with the same issue and waits for another 12 hours? I don't know why there are huge differences among the provincial healthcare system, but the Ontarios usual wait time is around 2-3 hours or less with very professional triage, extremely efficient in taking the vitals and registering the patient. Most of the emergency doctors are nice enough to actually talk to you more about your concern after 2,3 hours of wait.

This place is run down to the dirt. Honestly it's so dirty and torn and worn that it looks like it should be closing soon. Emergency visits take anywhere from 4-8 hours so if it's a true emergency I recommend paying for an ambulance so that you get in quickly. I've been in emergency screaming in agony and had a doctor sit down at a computer and check his email rather than come assist me. I've been turned away and referred elsewhere by a specialist without being satisfied with my appointment. In effect, this hospital is a reflection of our healthcare system: if you're simply sick but not dying, youre better off fending for yourself until you are dying. Then come back and see them....

How is this an “emergency” room? I went at 10:20 pm last night & wasn’t attended till 4:20 am. & then too after a few times when I checked with them? On top of that when I mentioned about the long wait, the old receptionist had audacity to say that it’s just 6 hours, it takes 10-12 hours. Like as if it’s a norm? This isn’t something to be proud of lady. There were not even 30 people last night. On top of that despite severe symptoms, the person who checked me didn’t even physical examined me. & just wrote prescription based on what I told him & let me go in 2 mins after 6 hours wait. He was the one at the reception taking my details when I had arrived so definitely he didn’t seem like a Doctor but just an RN. This is ridiculous. They don’t even have Doctors to attend to severe symptoms of patients. I feel people leave this province not only for lack of career opportunities but also for such a below par healthcare service. The waiting room hasn’t been upgraded since years. The staff are lazy to the core despite hardly any patients in the waiting room. I am not sure where does the money go to? Investigation is needed big time. Like on 1 end essential workers work on min wage jobs while on other end such careless & lazy nursing staff with attitude get paid like $70k sorts. I would ask people to complain to Janice Fitzgerald instead of complaining to their general email. More emails of such kinds should force Government to take some step EDIT - I had repeatedly told the billing dept to send any communication via email instead of mail & still they mailed the bill. Please try to respect someone’s preferences & privacy with such confidential records smh

Triage means nothing, 6 hour wait for something we pretty much knew anyways, girlfriend is 31 weeks pregnant and told then multiple times and they never happend to write that down, 2 hours in the waiting room before they realized and said we were to go to the case room. We phoned 811 before we went in and that didn't mean a row of beans either, they never faced or sent in the info we gave over the phone and the phone call was a waste of time anyways as they strayed from what we were saying and went with there own thing... no care in healthcare, bottomline right there.

My mother was in pure agony after falling on her head in a slippery parking lot and clearly had a concussion. They left a head injury 6 hours before getting a CAT Scan. I had asked the doctor if there was any progress and she barked at me saying I've now told you three times when she had not and the first time was to a nurse 2 hours prior. The doctor should be more open-minded that my mother is in a lot of pain and is very frustrated. All I needed was an answer to return with instead of feeling like I am annoying her. Then a nurse came in 5 minutes later and just injected a shot into my mothers arm without any warning of what she was about to do or what the drug was. They would not let my mother use the washroom even when my mom had said after a few hours of waiting could she be wheeled to the toilet. We were in a room separated by sheets it felt dirty and had a lack of privacy since I could hear every word people were saying. After 8 hours of waiting we were told she had a slight concussion and to go home with no medication or instructions given to me in how to look after her. Our health care system is failing miserably, there were people in beds in the halls due to the lack of room, staff was not concerned about their patients a man was ringing a nurse to come for over half an hour, the doctor is very rude, and finally if your not dying do not come because it will be a long wait.

some of the labor and delivery nurses were awesome and comforting(as they should be) and some of them also treated me like I was a waste of space and time because I went in thinking I was in labor at 19 weeks and baby isn't viable until 23 weeks so therefore they wouldn't even monitor me (I'm also at risk for uterine rupture during labor so I NEED to be monitor if i suspect im in labor). luckily i went back at 21/22 weeks due to very bad kidney stones and some nurses treated me a alot better.. don't be a nurse that works with pregnant moms to be if your gonna look at them and be rude just because they're babies aren't viable at the time. all babies matter in my opinion whether they can be saved or not!

My hubby comes here every 3 to 4 months for spine injections by doctor flint he said they are hard to do.but do not care it takes away all the burning out of his legs.so they are worth it.and we go to the cafeteria for breakfast every time we come here & their meals are worth every Penny we pay.this is the breakfast they serve here wonderful cooks for hosb food

All I gotta say is the Health Care in this city for the young and the old better start improving soon. I like St. Clare's better out of the two, but generally, if it takes at least 2 months to schedule an Emergency Ultrasound scheduled, and 4 months for other non-urgent ones? Something needs to improve. Also, at my second last appointment I had at the Health Science Centre, they literally could not find my appointment in their system (it was not a mistake I had made) and I got passed back and forth between the women's health clinic and the main registration desk until registration finally got ahold of a 4th person by phone who straightened it out. By then I was a half hour late for my appointment. And I'm just one person. Something needs to happen on a higher level, or in government to create a better health care system than what we currently have in place...

Horrible treatment by ER Staff - it's like they only care about getting your MCP Number - once they get it, if you're not dying, they can just call you in then dismiss you and say "go see your family doctor" - even if you're there because you injured a foot that has been broken twice in the past! They will say this even if you didn't ask for any drugs or imply that so it seems that unless you're dying, you're better off staying away from this hospital because all they care about is getting your MCP Number - that way they can bill the government for your visit even if they didn't do anything to or for you - when I was there, they didn't even look at my foot even though I had to get in a wheelchair since walking on it hurt too much and I never get into a wheelchair; I even said that! They never listened to me so I guess that they would rather just get your MCP Number so they can get paid for seeing you - that way, to them, it doesn't matter since once they have your MCP Number, they will just bill the government for your visit even if they didn't do any sort of exam - with me they said I should just take Advil and walk around even though I was in a wheelchair and in severe pain since it was a foot that I broke twice in the past! I never get into a wheelchair unless I'm forced to (and this was the first time I ever asked) since I'm not lazy and I have put up with pain before. So I hate to say it, they were wrong in their assumption - that got proven later on when I saw someone else (not at the hospital or my doctor) and it was discovered that I had a Grade II Sprain Injury - and the doctor that diagnosed that was surprised that no examination was done, at all, when I went to this Emergency Room. I will never come to this emergency room again since I know where the real care is: the money and those they do care about, are lucky, since there are other people treated like me also.

Drag from the interview desk by one arm and left in the waiting room , my two daughters lifted me off the floor on to a chair then got me into a vehicle with the help of security guards, I had to travel 100km to have my doctor examine me in the vehicle and send .e back to emergency with a letter. I neglected to mention I recently was released from the hospital after having emergency surgery and in severe pain.

Excellent care from Dr Harvey, nursing staff and hospital staff during my stay in the cancer ward, floor 5. I was appalled at some of the reviews posted by individuals as this hospital, like many others are, are overwhelmed by the shear number of people that require care and they do the best they can under the circumstances. You think waiting times are long in Newfoundland hospitals then try other provinces. Good luck to you. Avoid the line ups by staying healthy. Eat and exercise regularly. Quit the whining.

We come to the emergency at 3am and we are called at 8am, there other 5 patients was early than us they was there in the emergency at 11am and other came 12am and never been called until 4:30am so they decided to go home. Don't go to this emergency that they called they will let you die waiting. Zero star what they deserve.

I came here hoping to get treated. Instead, I was sitting in a chair for five minutes waiting to see the triage nurse. The triage nurse was someone who bullied me in school. When she saw me, before she sat down, she talked to a fellow colleague. They talked in low voices but I heard everything they said. The bully brought up things about me she didn't like, made up some things and told her colleague that I did them even though I never, and other nasty things. I decided that I couldn't deal with that; the reason I was there was significant but I knew if I was treated by the bully she might write something on the file so that the physician wouldn't treat me (I have heard about it happening to people at not only this hospital, but other hospitals as well). I left and went home. I still feel horrible and can't see my family doctor for it - this is something that a specialist working at the hospital would deal with. When I went to the emergency room in the past for the issue they would call the specialist on call! I might be wrong, even though the bully was saying nasty things about me she might not have written anything in my file when she actually saw me. But because of her behavior and my intuition what would happen if I saw her, I left. I think if I stayed the physician wouldn't have said that he could do anything for me; therefore making the wait pointless. I have dealt with rude nurses and doctors here in the past but this was the worst. I doubt I will ever come into this emergency room again; I would rather suffer out whatever horrible illness or feeling I'm having at home.

So I had to do an X-ray check. The result came back saying that some abnormalities were detected or suspected at my chest area. I was told to perform a CT scan next no matter what. At last, the CT scan result showed that I was a perfectly healthy 30s adult. Anyway, I was slapped by a >$2k bills because the testing was not insured by the MCP (for the purpose I was doing it for). What a bloody scam. I am $2k poorer today and the testing did not improve my living in any way.

Two weeks ago I slipped on Ice and broke my tibia and fibula. I'm a person who does not abuse hospitals so it has to be a real emergency for me to go to one. I fell at 930am and have 10 minutes lying alone on the cold icy pavement I found my phone and called my friend for help. With great pain and agony we got in to the house and I lied on the couch in serious agony. I iced my foot, elevated it and took two naproxen. I figured it was sprained. However around two that afternoon I started sweating, feeling nauseous and having chest pains. I decided a trip to the E.R. Was needed. I painstakingly went to the hospital. At triage I described what happen and what I was feeling. She took my vitals and sent me to get registered. I waited 5 minutes to get registered and as I was being wheel back to the waiting room a nurse called my name. Within 30 minutes I was in a bed, hooked up to a health monitor and fluids with a strong dose of morphine to ease the pain. From the second I walked in I was greeted with exceptional care far beyond my wildest dreams. Every nurse, doctor, surgeon, technologist and porter I came into contact with went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and safe. The care was phenomenal and I will never forget it. I arrived at 315pm and was out of surgery by 9:00PM. I had to say the night because of breathing problems. Emergency rooms and hospitals are always extremely busy and the staff work long hours and deal with all kinds of demanding, impatient, rude and self-entitled people who treat them with little respect for the care that they are trying to provide. If you go for a cold you will take a back seat to someone who could be having a heart. If you go for a small cut, you will take back seat to someone who has broken there bones and could be a risk of internal bleeding. Your emergency should be an emergency. Do not abuse the system and get upset that you have waited so long. It isn't the triage or nurses fault that all the beds are full, they only have so many. They are trying their best. How about the next time you go to emergency, think about why you're there and rank that with the possibilities of serious injuries to heart attacks to strokes. If you're not experiencing a life or death situation, sit back and be patient. They will get to you as soon as they can. Also, show the staff some kindness, smile at them, make a few funny jokes and try and relate to what they're going through and you will be surprised at how incredible the service is at this facility.

Still waiting in emergency going on seven hours. Have extremely bad cellulits in finger which has doubled in size as well as forming a blue ring. Guess time is not of importance for sepsis to set in... Don’t know what the issues are but people must be dying waiting to see doctors and get tests done. One lady is till here after waiting 8hrs! This provinces health care is so shameful!!!!

New to Newfoundland from Ontatio, I wasnt dure what to expect. I don't currently have a family doctor so a trip to Emerg was in order. Its was the fastest ER visit I have ever experienced. The staff and nurses were so kind, and I only paid 50c in parking. If I were in Ontario that would have easily been a 6 hour wait. Thank you for your help!

i have been in and out of the ER more times then i can count since february 2017. i went in with severe stomach pain and all they did was a physical exam and said “you’re fine” and then discharged me. i’m now seeing someone about it and they STILL don’t know what’s wrong. i’ve been told it’s not enough fibre in my diet and i’m not eating enough fruit and vegetables but even when i do increase that stuff, it doesn’t help. i’m SO disappointed in this hospital, i’ve been falsely diagnosed twice by “trained professionals” and i still don’t have a diagnosis after 3 and a half years. the ER staff really need to up their game and the rest of the doctors need to use their brains better.

Is it possible to have a 4-way stop signs at the intersection of Mosdell Rd and Clinch Crescent near the new Cancer Care Bldg/helicopter pad? Its such a confusing intersection with stop signs not placed on Clinch Crescent, but present on Mosdell and pedestrian crossings on all roads at this intersection. People don't always drive at 30km/hr. I've seen way too many close calls. This is a busy intersection that needs a 4-way stop sign.

I was told by a dr. trying to be get his overseas time good for Ontario that he was moving to Newfoundland as he did not have to do any many exams to be a dr. hear. I believe it as some of the dr.s here are not so good. I waited 5 hours as I was getting lots of nose bleeds and I never get them. Looked at me for less than 2 minutes. Brought my son to the Janeway as he was coughing for 4 days, and had a really sore throat. Blood pressure and temp was checked out front. But all doc did for my son was check his breathing and did not check his sore throat. My dad died last year and they unhooked him from all the machines and at least I thought they would make him feel more confortable instead they just left him to die. Waited over 2 years for my preteen daughter to see a theripist. Wish I was in BC or Ontario to get a good health care system.
