Being diagnosed with breast cancer was life altering. Hearing that I needed a double mastectomy was crushing. The journey is scary because decisions have to be made very fast. I was blessed to have gotten Dr. Yau as my reconstructive plastic surgeon. Beyond being brilliant and highly respected, Dr. Yau is compassionate and certainly went beyond anything I could have hoped for in a surgeon. In our first meeting we made many decisions that once home I was overwhelmed by. I called Leanne, Dr. Yau’s administrative assistant, (a force who moves mountains to get things done), with a shopping list of questions and concerns. To my amazement, Dr. Yau hearing of my anxiety, called from her vacation and spent as much time as I needed to answer my questions and listen to my hopes for a final outcome. To an outsider my worries would have been superficial and frivolous because I should have been more worried about getting the cancer out. Dr. Yau made me feel heard and validated. That gesture alone was a turning point in my journey.
My results are incredible, and I was NOT an easy patient. I am thin, had an undiagnosed bleeding disorder, and thin skin that had no buffer to hide the implant. Dr. Yau found the perfect cohesive implant for my body type and with fat grafting, when I look in the mirror I see a beautiful woman, not someone ravaged by breast cancer. Dr. Yau is a brilliant surgeon and an artist. She will tell you what is realistic and do what is right for you in order to have the best and safest outcome possible. Would I recommend her... without hesitation! In fact I will praise and share the experiences I have with her to anyone who will listen or who is looking for a plastic surgeon. I was not an easy reconstruction and we had to do some revisions but if she can make me look better than I did before cancer than she is beyond talented.
