I was referred to dr Brett by an emergency doctor for scar revision.
I called his office and was answered by his assistant. I asked her if it is covered by AHS and she advised me to get a referral from a family doctor and that way the consult will be covered but whether or not the procedure itself is covered by AHS will be determined by the doctor during an in-person meeting which is reasonable.
The referral was sent to him a week ago but had not heard from his office. I, as a result, called the office to follow up today. The same assistant answered the phone and said she will get back to me as dr Brett only comes in on Thursday, which was fine with me. But she said if I wanted to see him from AHS referral, there is a wait which she never told me before. I would have just gotten in with the consultation fee out of pocket because I am having surgery which made me unable to walk around for a while. That is why I wanted to see dr Brett before my surgery as I am not sure how long my recovery will take.
She tried to change her story and make me pay out of my pocket and I can see him before my surgery. I asked her why she did not tell me before and I could have just booked an appointment with him and did not have to go get a referral. But she never mentioned any of these and said today there is no way I can see him before my surgery if I don’t pay out of my pocket.
I said that is fine and told her it would have been better if she had told me in the first place as I don’t have much time left prior to my surgery. She was getting frustrated and making a series of sighs and interrupted me and said dr Brett can’t see me before surgery if I use insurance from AHS. I told her I understood but she was not done and showed a pattern of being obsessive and tried to argue with me until she feels better about the fact I brought up that she did not mention dr Brett only can accommodate me before my scheduled surgery only if I pay out of my pocket for consult.
I don’t know how great dr Brett is as a surgeon but I only called his office as I was told to call him by the emergency surgeon. But he needs to know that frontline receptionists are the ones who make the first impression about your office to your future patients. That is why so many plastic surgery offices spend so much money and emphasize how important it is for their staff to professionally handle their patients. More than 40% of the complaints of any medical clinics come related to the manners of the staff, not the doctors.
No matter how good you are, if you can’t get connected to your prosective patients because of the lack of professionalism and empathy of your staff, it is your loss, not hers or mine.
Just my honest feedback for your success.
