This is one of the best online learning experiences I have had (and I have been an online psychology and theology professor for many years). Dennis is thorough in his teaching, well informed with photo concepts, very affirming of newcomers and their questions and anti-guilt for all. And it was fun. He was able to create a community sense about the learning, surely an advanced skill. His weekly online videos were informative and always helpful. Last year I decided to get serious about this camera relationship, and I embarked on a learning journey. I began learning online, took a couple introductory courses through the community schools, and then decided to take the Intermediate course Dennis offered. I wish I had taken his beginner course! This is a "dive right in with both feet" course. Dennis gives very clear, easy to understand teaching and lots of in-class opportunity to develop skills. Taking Dennis's Introductory course was exactly what I needed to feel confident in taking great photos. When I first got my camera, I couldn't seem to get clear pictures or have the right light. After the very first night of the course, I was shown what I was doing incorrectly. It was the small details of instruction that made the most impact. Dennis puts theory into practice in the classroom. Being able to practice each step hands on in the classroom was extremely helpful in understanding terminology and technique. His open classroom discussions were very helpful and he was adament that no question was to go unanswered. His availability even after class through email or a phone call awesome should you be stuck on something and you needed guidance. He was always willing to help in any way. The outings for outdoor hands on experience and instruction was a great part of the class. Dennis's constructive criticism was a huge factor in my own progress and growth in the course. Excellent quality, superb value! I have just completed my second Photography course with Dennis and I cannot recommend his classes highly enough. If you have ever taken courses in the past (like I had) that provided endless information but no way to internalize or practise what you learned, you will know how important a class such as this is in which the instructor connects you with the material he teaches, and practises with you until you have “conquered” it. I began the courses accepting what my camera could do for me, but ended the classes now confidently making my camera do what I want it to do..I am now the boss!! :) Not only does Dennis teach you about your camera and how it works and what it can do – (he teaches the Nikon users and his wonderful helpers Randy and Mel help the Canon users) – he challenges you to use your camera’s potential to the fullest and helps you navigate your way around it until you are comfortable making the adjustments you need to get far superior shots. I thought I would never be able to shoot in Manual but now greatly prefer doing so as it lets me get the shots I really want! Dennis is a fantastic, accomplished and creative instructor – his classes are interesting, lots of fun, challenging and greatly rewarding! He is very interested in helping his students succeed. I have owned my DSLR for 4 years and in that time I have been mostly a self taught 'photographer', picking up an odd tip or technique here or there. But I never felt competent in either my understanding of the camera itself or in my ability to create photos worthy of appreciation. Once I started Dennis' Introductory Photography course, though, in no time at all, I was much more comfortable with selecting the settings on my camera and knowing how they would affect the photos I was attempting to take. Most importantly, however, Dennis' course taught me that I have a much broader visual sensitivity than I knew I possessed and I am now capturing photos I would have never imagined 'seeing' before.
