I was lucky enough to participate in a mentorship session with Brandon Marsh and get the help I needed, for my growth as a photographer. Brandon shared his knowledge with me through one on one sessions, going over strategies, portfolios, equipment and as well as everything that needs to be done behind the scenes to run a successful business. I particularly enjoyed the post production aspect and was shown a complete walk through on how Brandon does editing, which opened my eyes to new techniques. I’ve spent the last year and a bit working as an assistant on Brandon’s team, and I can say that the confidence and experience I have gained through this role has helped me grow immensely as a commercial photographer. He has helped guide me through navigating pricing, client interactions, putting together RFPs, and other aspects of the industry that can be difficult and costly to learn on your own. Brandon is extremely generous with the knowledge that he shares and provides a space in which assistants feel safe to grow and learn. I have never felt intimidated to ask a question, for clarification, or to just talk about what is happening on set. Working with Brandon has exposed me to many different types of photography equipment and lighting set ups, some of which I’ve been able to modify and incorporate into my own workflow. Being able to talk about these things and listen to Brandon’s recommendations for my own work has been such an asset. I leave conversations with him feeling inspired and excited about photography. This positive environment that Brandon creates within his team is so beneficial, especially when the days on set are long. I attribute a lot of the growth I have experienced this year to lessons I’ve learned while working with Brandon. He has set an example for me as a photographer and a business owner, and helped me develop practices and systems to create a career in the industry that is both enjoyable and sustainable. If you’re looking to do the same, I can’t recommend a better person to learn from.
