After coming up from the water park my family and I saw that a Non-indigenous family was dressing up in native costumes. So much so that the youngest boy was even wearing a fake headdress. We all felt very uncomfortable by this because we are all Indigenous and I went to talk with the lady who was helping to dress these individuals. When I expressed that the clothing wasn’t appropriate, instead they were appropriating our culture, I was met with defensiveness and dismissiveness. Two of the workers became involved and the oldest explained that an elder granted them the approval for using these costumes, because they were just for photos. However, I very much believe that this is improper and a complete disrespect to all Indigenous tribal nations, as it continues pan-indianism. OUR CULTURE IS NOT FOR YOU TO MAKE INTO A COSTUME.
