I live in Valleyview but always go the extra few miles for the deals and cleanliness of this store and they always have great staff they make a pleasure to shop there and I am in love with the optimum points program hands down the best reward card out there as well asp.c. insiders they even got be stared with the p.c. financial card to earn eben more optimum points...I always have discounts everytime I shop and tbe prices are fabulous compared to other grocery stores in town.

Hands down the best grocery store on the North Shore, and the best in all of Kamloops for customer service. One of the few stores that still bag your groceries for you and truly make an attempt to make a connection with their customers. I almost removed a star because of the intimidating riff-raff that hang out out front, but I understand this is not a problem unique to this business.

Very good store, lots of great deals on a daily and weekly basis. Really good variety of products offered, free home delivery offered for orders over $50.00 purchase. PC PLUS points offered and these points can be redeemed for free groceries, which helps a lot if on a fixed income. However; the meat department products tend to have excess fat hidden under better trimmed visible product, makes me feel that I am paying for the fat which I have to trim off and throw out, might as well just throw my money in the garbage.

I also like to get my groceries every other day because I love customer service as I have been working this trade for about 30 years give or take a year. Cain's independent grocery store is a Powerhouse for local produce. Children's and baby clothes.. 2 pints of blueberries for 4.99 can't go wrong. Especially if you've ever picked blueberries and understand how laborious it can be. Living on the north shore can be a stretch when your looking for oddball items. I haven't found any Kombucha there yet, Wich is why I go to Safeway, but I keep tabs on independent even though it's a slightly longer drive; independent is local. Of course being attached to an established strip mall has its perks. You could shop all day in air-conditioned tile floors. The food court is dead but the trinket (treasure)shop and animal House pet store sure come in handy. "The Source" has the tech covered and you won't even have to step outside ! While you're walking around , attempt a game of digital skill and winvan iPad! I spent 25$ on the game machine and learned the algorithms. Wich enabled me to win two Nintendo DS!

I can remember a few times where I needed help finding an item and couldn't find a staff member down any of the aisles, so I had to go to customer service just to get assistance. Aside from that, I have nothing but positive things to say about this establishment.

I am a frequent shopper there, and on one of my shopping days, I was not feeling very well and as I was getting ready to pay my bill, the young man told me; I had enough points for $30 savings, would I like to redeem points. They make fried chicken, chicken tenders, chicken wings and sandwiches that are nothing short of amazing. The price is more than reasonable too. I also picked up some top sirloin steaks that were priced cheaper than hamburger and were resteraunt quality. I will be shopping here a lot more in future even though it's a lengthy drive. The store has great selection of quality items at fantastic prices.

Edited March 2021: Downgraded to one star after both sons were harassed by staff because they were on electric scooters. Parked before going into store.

I had a bad experience in the store & was very poorly treated for a long time resident of the North Shore. I did not mean to create a scene but became upset when the clerk lied about other people being inline at the time of my attempt to do a return of a product that I did not feel was up to their standard. When I approached CUSTOMER SERVICE desk she was busy talking to a clerk doing cash-out. She came to help me & then called a person from the department who came & said the product wasn't acceptable & to replace it. Well I went & got another package. Took it back to the same clerk & she watched as I opened it (as I was not driving through traffic to take another package back. That's when she informed me that she would not give me my money back nor do anything about the second product being no better than the first. Then she said that she was busy with other customers & didn't get to put my product return in the computer before I opened the second package. She was standing right there as another clerk & come & helped other customer. Poor customer service in my eyes!

Half the time all the workers look cranky or come off as cold and heartless at the tills. There have been very few people to go out of there way to make me feel comfortable in this store. You can hear when people are yelling in the back of the store. But they do keep it looking clean and there produce does last long enough to eat at least. 2 staff at the back of the store were no help in finding what we couldnt...'uh, it might be over there or maybe over there'. Cashier: 'how is it going?' Not great, couldnt find half of what we came for, and the staff we asked were no help'. Oh, sorry to hear that...that will be $xxx.' 'Would you please call the manager?' 'I cant' 'why not?' 'I dont know who it is. You have to go to customer service'. SO, we stand in line at customer service, ask the girl to speak to the manager, and she calls 'manager to customer service' (notice she didnt have a name either, but she called the manager.) Then appeared not a manager, but a 'supervisor', who I told the same sad story to and he literally stood, blank-staring, mouth slightly open and said nothing. Wanted to check his pulse...definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed. And HE was left in charge of the store?! And there...on the customer service counter, where people go AFTER they are finished shopping...is the paper telling where you can find things in the store. OMG why doesn't every staff person HAVE to have one in their pocket?!!! And why aren't those papers at the FRONT of the store, so customers can find what they're looking for as they go?!! And why didn't any one of the 3 staff at the front of the store ask if THEY could help us find what we were looking for?! Not even the supervisor, who is so far out of his depth that it is sad. WORST grocery shopping experience EVER!!!

The staff are friendly and well trained and efficient at there jobs as well as very courteous. I had my Cain taken earlier in day and the clerk had noticed I didn't have it and offered me to use one that had been left behind by someone to make my shopping experience easier. (Thank you by the way) I would recommend to anyone.

The manader Pat, is really prejudice. I have a mask exemption and went to buy some groceries. He agressively told me that I must leave. Did not ask anything else. Exempt people are being treated aweful at this store. Dont shop here, they have a real problem serving disabled persons. Bad man.

I shop here 1-2 times a week. Pros: ~ Lower prices, even with name brand organic items, as well as non-food items. ~ The deli's fresh roasted whole chicken is better than Safeway's and Cooper's (Cooper's is the worst). ~ A good selection of fresh meat available in the meat department. ~ Has the best selection of birthday cards on the North Shore. Cons: ~ LOTS of very expired foods on shelves (throughout the store). ~ Most of the fresh foods in dairy, meats, bakery, and produce are due to expire in 2-3 days, whereas you usually get a week at Safeway or Coopers. Maybe this is why the prices are so low. ~ They only have a few of those smaller sized carts and they're usually already being used. ~ Many of the older cash clerks seem like they're dead inside and can't be bothered to be genuine with customers. ~ Many of the products in the toiletries section look pretty mangy, so it's a bit buyer beware. ~ Have bought ice cream on several occasions that had clearly melted and refrozen at some point before I purchased it (could indicate problems with their freezers). ~ Sometimes the baggers, though it's nice they're helping pack up my groceries, will pack bananas, avocados, or bread with cold items which causes bruising or early mold to form. Although, in the past two weeks, the very young baggers that are there for the summer have packed my groceries properly.... so maybe there's hope for IG yet. ;)

Very un friendly and disrespectful staff. As a loyal customer I am appalled by how I was treated today. I walked in and grabbed a basket as usual with my boyfriend and after no evidence of us doing anything wrong the security guard followed us everywhere. We asked the manager about it because it was making us very uncomfortable and embarassed for I've never stolen a day in my life. The manager just rudely replied it's his job so we asked the security guard why he was following loyal customers around and he just looked at us and rudely said "thats my job". We were so embarassed and appalled by this behaviour we droppes our baskets and walked out. Will nevee be coming back. You have lost a loyal customer Independent.

Apparently they think they have a monopoly on how people buy groceries. They are controlling how people got into the store and are making them wait outside in -25° windy weather. They even have the metal shutter pulled across in the mall ((they have mostly had it shut for who knows how long now feels like years)) and completely locked. Really not an attractive look

A few weeks ago they suddenly changed the mask policy making it mandatory which is fine except there was no signage anywhere and the security ran up to my disabled wife and grabbed our shopping cart and told her she could not shop there because she did not have a mask on and in the process almost knocked her over. We put masks on but that was our last shopping trip there as they handled it so aggressively, they could have asked us to wear masks or informed us of the new policy. There was a lot of angry shoppers over how badly this was handled with all customers. The security has really gone down hill since Covid and the cashier could not even do a simple price check.

Today I wanted to buy four packages of chicken for a family dinner we are having this week. The “meat manager” was rude and blunt because I did not see the sign that said limit of two. I was insulted that she spoke to me so disrespectfully. I insisted on speaking with the store manager Mrs Cain who is the meat manager’s mother. She was also very condescending. I asked for an exception. I am not a hoarder. I just wanted to buy enough chicken for a special family gathering. The first since last summer. She refused. I walked out. I have shopped in this store since 1968. (Super Valu - Extra Foods- Independent). So disappointed in their behaviour. I am obviously not a valued customer. However, The staff is awesome!!!!

Over priced!!! i brought in a New Leaf flyer and the manager would not match the New Leaf's prices. Independant was selling apples for approx. $2.50 lb and New Leaf was selling them for .48 lb. They would rather lose my business then match a price. I was only visiting Kamloops so no biggie but i am sorry for everyone who lives in this area and is forced to shop at this store.

Awesome staff and reasonable prices. Sometimes it's quite busy but the line up is organized when it is. The meat section is great, lots of variety and lower prices compared to other stores. There's usually decent sales. I also like that the pharmacy is usually quiet.

I love this place! Living on the north shore its nice to have a choice of grocery stores close by that still recognize the need for good food and good prices. Nice that a budget friendly chain finally though about all of us on the other side of the bridge. I'm a big comparison shopper- when the other guys are charging up to 13$ for chicken fingers or 4$ for a package of cookies - 6$ and 2$ on a YIGS flyer price and not having to travel up the hill- no brainer- in my opinion. Welcome to the north shore- Great Job and wonderful staff.

There customer service is not the greatest. On Dec 5 I had purchased 3 Poinsettia in 4.5 white tins @ 7.00 per total 21.00 On Dec 7 I was in Superstore and they had the exact same item @ 6.00 each. I had taken a picture of the item with the price that was posted. On Dec 10 I returned with my receipt plus the photo I was told they would not credit as it was not n advertised price. Hmm well Independent had not advertised price in the flyer and neither did Superstore. It mus have cost Independent an $1 extra to have the truck deliver from the south to the North Shore
