Update: on arrival the next day, they refunded my money for the day I wasn't able to contact them.
I like the place, but got turned around driving there. I got there late and was in a hurry, I thought maybe the flier, which shows a map on the overleaf, would guide me to my campsite in case of trouble with gps navigation, so I didn't invest in the 12 dollar or 18 dollar water proof extra map being sold at the office. Bad mistake, and I really wish the young lady at the desk knew a little more, she could have headed off the trouble that ended with me landing on a rocky point after midnight, setting up camp near my site, but not my site.
There are plenty of reflective signs out there on the shoreline, indicating things like no anchorage, or no fires on shore, but the campsite signs are just a florescent orange photocopy paper, not reflective after dark, placed well away from the shore, and in this case, not visible right from the shore by flashlight. (darkness came at about 7:30 that evening, not long after I set out in a well lit canoe with navigation lights in place.) I never saw the sign until the next day, checking the next Bay over from where I had ended up, I finally saw the sign from about 100 feet offshore.
I think, in case people find themselves arriving after dark, if they get lost, better sign placement and full reflective material for the sign is warranted, this and the fact that I wasn't informed better at the start, the girl didn't check, or insist I check, my GPS coordinates on my phone display before I left without the benefit of a map showing the actual site!
And why even include a useless almost-map on your flyer? Wouldn't it use the same amount of ink to print a map guiding you to your actual spot, not just the area to expect it in?!
These difficulties spring from my reliance on the GPS in my phone, and my relying on stored map info with no way of updating it. Next time, and I'd love to come back and do it right, I'll purchase the map, damn, I wish I had this time, that flier was only good for a fire starter!
This just for the lack of phone service, I have tried repeatedly to contact Ontario Parks, on how late I can arrive at the Pete's place access point, and was told by a recorded voice that my call is important, to leave my phone number and expect a returned call... sometime... My first call was at 4:00 pm, I"M STILL WAITING at 8:00! Due to a glitch with my web page, I've accidentally booked tonight, and won't be able to get there until about 3.5 hours from now, about 11:30 pm, I would do it, I've set up tent well after dark before, I've paddled under the moonlight, even in Georgian Bay! but how do I go about checking in at Pete's place, will somebody tell me? I'll put my stuff in the car and go, but how do I know!? It would really add insult to injury to arrive and have nobody there, just like there's nobody there to answer the phone at the Ontario Parks desk! Then what, leave my car where? to get ticketed?
