REVIEWS OF Killarney Provincial Park IN Ontario

A wonderful place which encompasses the best of the Georgian Bay are, it's very difficult to focus on any single spot which could identify the whole region

Alex Reinhart

The best provincial park in Ontario, by far. I wish it were easier to get to! Great, clean campsites, very nice, conveniently located comfort station, and the best hikes around. Highly recommend getting an interior site if you like canoeing, but also works for RV camping.

This place is heaven. There are views around every corner. I walked the mild trail. It wasn’t mild but it was wonderful. The lake is great for swimming. The park is quite dog friendly. Rv sites are a bit small and tricky to back into. The beauty of the place is indescribable. If you kayak or canoe, there is no better place to go. It is easy to rent equipment if you don’t have your own.

Scenic and very historic. Such a beautiful area, the trails that are around the park are very enjoyable. The La Cloche Mountain range is just spectacular. Talk about scenic - white quartzite rocks with peaks as high as 500’. I was only on the George Lake campsite, and the day trails nearby. I don’t think there is a bad campsite in the George Lake campground. They all have their own beauty. Lots to do including backpacking, backcountry canoeing on multi - day routes. But, doing the backcountry in this scenic area is definitely on my bucket list. Canoe rentals available as well as access to outfitters that are nearby to the park.

Great fall colours! The silloute trail is well marked and cleared, although you will definitely need hiking boots. Not an easy walk in the park.

Amazing park that's very well managed compared to other places I've been. They have a super long hiking trail up to 100km where you can backpack overnight! Beautiful scenery, a town nearby with a pleasant vibe. Highly recommend!

Absolutely amazing. We camped here for a weekend in early July. The weather was amazing and mosquitoes were tolerable. We were fortunate to see bears (they were active.at the time), snakes, and a snapping turtle! Ample space to boat, hike, swim, or just explore.

If you want a quiet get away from busy city life and this is one of the place to be. The cabins are nice and clean. Will definitely go back.

A very quite place for camping, almost no mosquitoes. Many personal camping sites to get private space. You can rent a kayak or canoe from a 5 min drive location, just pay there and take kayak from the main beach at George lake. Affordable pricing, good thing is the time limit which is more then 12 hours

Completed Nellie lake loop on the west end of Killarney park starting at Widagwa. Its 33km, as the crow flys, but found the route and Portages are a little longer than shown. Howey creek meanders. The site was good facing west for the sunset. I would recommend not doing the 3 Portages in one day, it'll wipe you out.

Great canoeing and camping park! The water can get shallow and weedy in places, best to pack light!

Murray Marshall

It rained the whole time we were here but the hiking and yurting were still incredible! We're looking forward to coming back to get out on the lakes on the SUPs or a canoe!

Last weekend we visited Killarney Provincial Park, which contains just one campground at the George Lake entrance as it is primarily a wilderness park. Closest city is Sudbury, almost 100km away. Park features a number of hiking trails and canoe-in back-country camping areas and is well known for portages between lakes. Try to book a canoe before you arrive at “Killarney Outfitters”. It was made famous by Canadian artists “Group of Seven”. Canadian Group of Seven artist A. Y. Jackson was so alarmed by the prospect that Trout Lake (now O.S.A. Lake) was about to be logged that he petitioned the Provincial government of the day to have it preserved. Finally in 1964, with the help of lobbying efforts by the Group of Seven, 4,000 square miles (10,000 km2) of Georgian Bay shoreline were set aside as a wilderness reserve, and Killarney became a provincial park. It was recently awarded the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada's Dark-Sky Preserve designation, amazing for studying the night sky. Great place to visit and experience untouched nature.

One of the best parks in Ontario, famous by pink granite shores scenery

A real treat to wildlife lovers! It is also not so bad with mosquitos compared to Algonquin during this time of the year. A long part of the road leading to the park has no cell signal, make sure you are well prepared before entering it.

Definitely one of the best provincial parks in Ontario. Our campsite of choice was a drive in campsite, and it had the best lake view. Our campsite backed out right onto the lake and the site was large enough for 2-3 large tents. At the campsite, we were still able to get LTE network which was nice. Our campsite was very private and had our own private trail leading down to a sandy beach. We only had time to check out The Crack trail and it was worth it. Not the easiest trails with lots of climbing over rocks and boulders. But after finally reaching the top, the view was spectacular! We brought our dog with us, but a caution, some of these rocks are super sharp so we had to carry him on some parts of the climb to the top and down Unlike some provincial parks, the park store does not carry and snacks or food, so be sure to pack enough for your stay. Or you could visit town that’s not a long drive away. Overall an amazing experience and would definitely come back.

This is my favorite park in Ontario...I make a point of backcountry camping along the La Cloche trail every year. This past June, my wife and tackled the whole 80km trail. Very strenuous, and difficult in some areas but very worth it. After every grueling climb up, we were presented with a breath taking view, which made every ache, pain and blister worth it. I will be back again next summer again to do it all over again. The park itself is amazing and offers trails for every range of physical ability. As well as canoeing/kayaking which we have also do there, which get you to different parts not accessible by foot.

I came here for a day trip at the end of October and had a phenomenal day. It was a 4.5hr drive, but I still managed to make it out for the day without needing to camp. I loved all the day trails, and it was a day I will never forget. Definitely a must-see for everyone who has the chance!

La Cloche Silhouette trail is an amazing yet very difficult trail!! Only recommended for the experienced hikers because of the very technical terrain.

Beautiful trail, with moderate to difficult areas, including some very steep terrain. Make sure you have appropriate hiking shoes. Once you have climbed through the crack, you will be treated to one of the most beautiful views in the park. This panoramic vista is amazing. The fall colors are mostly gone, but the view is nonetheless breathtaking. Along the way, you are treated with beautiful lookouts to the lakes. And if you are into photography, you can spend hours along the way, especially if mushrooms are present. Will definitely come back everytime I am in Killarney.

Marie Tourangeau

Beautiful park. It has many hiking and canoe trails. The Crack is a good one because it's short and offer an amazing view. Lake George offers great camping spots. I posted trails reviews and tips on my Instagram @hld_ma

We spent three nights camping here. Great spot! Very quiet, rustic and spacious. George Lake is gorgeous with opportunities to hike and climb.

Chris Lawson

Ontario’s tiny perfect park. Very busy in August and reservations hard to come by but spectacular scenery, well-maintained campsites and portages.

Sabrina

Trails were great, but some very muddy areas due to heavy rain, so make sure you are paying attention as rocks become slick while you pass over. Lots of fantastic lookout points and places to rest, take it all in and grab a snack. Fall foliage was at 40% colour and 20% leaf drop during our visit, but would say more along 30% leaf drop with 50% colour as most reds along the trail were already on the ground.

Stayed two nights in a yurt in December. Bigger than expected and nicely heated. We stayed with our 6 month old in a bassinet in a fleece onesie and had a great time. We booked the yurt that allowed dogs and our cavalier loved it too. Very warm. Only downsides were (1) heater was very noisy and woke me and baby up in the night. (2) 500 m by sled was fun in the day but not so much when we left in the dark. Overall a great stay!

Collin D'souza

Yurts are quiet out of date for a provincial park. We stayed at yurt 4. If you booked it I'd cancel and try to get into yurt 1 or 2 or don't go at all. The bathrooms are poorly maintained and they only keep one open that's quiet far from the yurts.

I hiked the La Cloche Silhouette trail solo in August 2016. It was an amazing trail. The sites were clean and private. The trail was fairly well marked. The views were spectacular, especially at The Crack. I hiked it in 6 days and that was a good pace. There was a drought that month, so there were issues getting water at river crossings and even some of the sites weren't really accessible to water due to low lake levels. I was glad that I took my hammock as some of the sites were rocky. I took a side trip early morning up Silver Peak. I was at the top by 9am, which was fantastic as I managed to avoid most of the day hikers. The parking lot was quite a distance from the trail start/finish. I can't wait to go back there. Book early and try to book sites that are on Topaz (dead) lakes. They are absolutely beautiful and reminded me of the sea. The more remote sections of the loop had very little cell service. I did manage to get a bit at the top of most of the hills/mountains, but not generally at the sites. It was one of the best trips of my life. I highly recommend it for anyone with a bit of backcountry hiking/camping experience. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners.

One of the best parks in Ontario that I have visited. It has great facilities. Beaches are awesome. Also hikes are great. Keep in mind hikes are not very kid friendly. Also Killarney village is beautiful and a must see when you are there.

We only came for the day but will definitely try and reserve a site for camping next year! Truly one of the most beautiful places we’ve seen in Ontario and there’s so much more of the park we haven’t even seen! We rented a canoe with Killarney Outfitters and our canoe was ready for us at the beach at George Lake. We portaged over to another lake and back in the same day since it was not a long trek. The scenery from the boat was incomparable. The best part of the day was pulling up the canoe to private areas around the lake and swimming off the rocks! Highly recommend this park as I couldn’t be more impressed.

Killarney Provincial Park is one of my favorite places in Ontario. Breathtaking scenery. We camped at site 126 at George Lake 26th to 28th June 2015. Weather was great. Nights were lovely. Not too warm or cold. Wash rooms and water tap very close. Great campground. There was a large rock beside our camp site that the kids could climb. This kept them entertained the whole time we were at the site. Loved the beach. There was an area that you could dive into the water. The older kids loved this while the younger ones were happy to be at the beach playing with sand. We saw a huge snapping turtle swim away near the diving area. Just before we entered the campground we were lucky to see a mother bear crossing the road and we waited for the cub to cross. But then two more cubs followed. Two days later we saw another bear walking away to the forest from the garbage disposal area. As all campers found out the mosquitoes were a problem this June. There were clouds of them and we ran out of all our repellent but the park office had plenty. We did the Cranberry Bog and Granite Ridge trails. Cranberry Bog was easily tackled with kids ranging from 4 to 10. Granite Ridge had more inclines and rocky areas to climb which was harder for younger kids. For adults the trails were great. Nice views at lookouts. The rock formations were beautiful with the red and white mixing. Update: Jul 2021.chipmunk cabin 137. Beatiful cabin but not cleaned properly. We had to wipe dust and sweep full cabin. Otherwise nice stay.
