Nice trail walk . ( 5.9 Km approx ) nice spot for swimmimg.
Wonderful walking trails Great lake put poorly maintained beach area full of goose dropping
Warm water when I swam in it in may. Nice sandy beach. Has washrooms and changerooms. I like it there
Wonderful hike around a 6.1km trail. Some spots are steep so prepare for a mild grind, but overall mostly level. Paths are well maintained and there is lots of room for many at a time. There are trails off the main that take you up to Westwood Ridge, and even trails that connect to Morrell Sanctuary. Rock bluffs to sunbathe, several good fishing spots, and beautiful nature. If you have the energy for it, a top notch place to hike around!
Wonderful walk. Lots of puppies on leashes, joggers, and families. Well used path. Lots of options. 6 km loop. One major hill either at the start or finish depending on the direction.
Westwood lake is amazing, the sand is soft, the water is fairly clean.
Warm clean water, sandy beaches, floating docks, surrounded by forest, and walking trails all around. Perfect place for any sunny day.
Westwood Lake, great place to jog or hike. You could just lay on the beach.A favourite for a lot of people. A trail runs the circumference of the lake.A fun thing for a lot of people is to go with a buddy on the run. Jan.24/2020 Between the rain drops and brakes in the clouds. When the sun comes the next best place is one of our many parks.
One of the best outdoor centers and lake activities in Nanaimo.
Beautiful walking trail
This park offers a great lake/forest experience all year long. Fantastic hikes for all abilities, fishing, swimming, boating during our perfect summers and falls, Everyone we introduce to Westwood Lake is amazed at the beauty and quality of this park. Dogs are welcome (on-leash) on the main trails, and an off-leash area is also available on the south side of the lake. Washrooms are near the ample parking lot, next to the swimming beach. Make it one of many 'must visit' destinations while in Nanaimo.
Love to do the walk around the whole lake. Peaceful and tranquil hike.
Pretty sweet place to go in any season. Great running trails. Or walking trails. Up to you. Also pretty good swimming all summer. Not yet cleanest water but it's water.
Really nice trail system to hike, 6km
Easy walking trails and gorgeous beaches. Kids beach and an adult's beach. Parking is limited so either get here early or be prepared to walk a few minutes
Beautiful walk, but we went with a stroller and it was tough going over the rocks and roots on the path. Next time we will use the baby carrier.
Review for beach AND trail: - Trail review: A magical place to go for a 6 km walk, bike ride or run. Benches along the way, one big outlook at the bluff. Mostly flat, except the bluff. Access to Morrel Nature Sanctuary Trailhead. - Beach review: lovely and lively in summer! Flush toilets, food carts and trucks. Very family friendly. Life guards on duty. Many boats and swimmers. In fall and water it's way less busy, no food, chilly water but hardcore people still going for a dip!
Beautiful, sunny day - great hike!
Great 6km hike and a good beach for swimming and fishing
Had fun even in the rain! But the bus doesn't go all the way in which could be a problem with a child and in the rain lol
Beautiful spot, but busy during summer months and warm days!
most beautiful lake in nanaimo
Fabulous little lake on the edge of the city. Great hike around the lake, go for a swim, or bike the trails along the mountains. A must check out.
Nothing like taking a sunny weekend walk on your favorite trail.
Really nice place for a walk and some mild exercise.
Great walking trails, family beaches with lifeguards. Well maintained.
Great Lake for a swim or hike. Would be nice if they had a way to quickly wash off the lake water when finished swimming
One of the natural gems in Nanaimo. Lots of runners, dog walkers, and others enjoy the loop around Westwood Lake.
I run here several times a week. It's about a 6km loop with markers every km so it's easy to use to train for marathons and measure distance. It's also flat with the exception of one Hill. Go left at the main sign to start with the hill.
A must visit place for families to go, while kids can enjoy the water and play area, adults can go swimming, paddle boarding and go for walk. With mountains close by its a perfect picturesque place which has something for everyone.
It was a beautiful, serene lake with a great walking loop around it's shore. Unfortunately recent new neighbor "the Canadian military" has placed a gun range next to the lake. Removing bike trails and introducing the constant noise of guns going off.
Beautiful vista. Family friendly. Get ready for sun.
A friend and I went to Westwood Lake to do the 6km loop around the Lake. It was a great way to spend an hour. The trail is well maintained with lots of parking. The trail itself takes you on boardwalks and across bridges. There is a mountain bike trail as well that seemed popular.
2 beaches to choose from. Lifeguards on duty on 1 of them. Good walk around the lake. Pretty clean, annoying geese!! Watch for their poop.
Beautiful lake, nice trails around the lake to bike, walk or run. Good place for fishing too!
Amazing A cool dip. Quick 6 kn round lake walk.. For a beatuiful sunet7:30 sh. 1♡
Nice easy walk. Homes and trailers all along one side. Mostly nice walking in the middle of Nanaimo. Trout fishing too
Excellent place to walk, run, bike, or swim. Shaded, so nice in the hot sun.
You can swim, run trails, run the path, off road bike, picnic.
Pretty trails to walk on. Such a great place to jog around and let dogs explore as well :)
Simple walk turn into my main kayak spot!
Such a beautiful place to explore! Swimming in the summer is a treat (just keep an eye out for VIHA closures and make sure to shower afterwards!). Nice perimeter trail to walk or jog along :) Take your dog! There are also some excellent mountain bike trails around the lake. All around a great place to visit
Good walking and hiking trails, great views all around the lake.
Lovely path around the lake, great place to go for a run or swim in the summer
6 Km trail. Mostly flat. Take a left so you do the hill first. Two beaches, one with a lifeguard (mostly for smaller kids).
Beautiful park very close to the city
Beautiful scenery, great beach, friendly people and a good hike trail. Even a Brazilian food truck on site.
If you are looking for somewhere to go for a nice walk/hike, the 6KM loop around Westwood lake is one to add to your list. The trail loops around the lake and has places to take a break an relax. There is also an off leash dog area. One of Nanaimo's many great spots to enjoy nature.
One of the loveliest parks in Vancouver. The lake is man made so doesn't drain well which makes for a lesser swimming experience due to dirty ish water, but not that bad. Area for swimming is roped of. Boat ramp for canoeing or kayaking. Beautiful 6km walk around lake with access to provincial power lines for longer walks.
The 6K lake trail is commonly used as an exercise walk/run destination, including by yours truly several times a week. Well groomed wide trail, but with many trip hazards (rocks and roots). Bike trails and access to many other trails. Usually ample parking except the lot can be full on summer weekends. But cars frequently come and go, so spots do open up. Decent beach (two) with lifeguards at one. Picnic tables.
My favorite place to swim or walk (or cycle) around the lake. Life guards on duty in summer until 6pm.
It's a great running loop and can have some killer sunsets
Nice little place. Limited parking.
Warm water, clean beach. Great for the kids. Wish they allowed dogs on the beach.
Nice reasonably flat wide trail with adjacent off-leash area. Lots of mountain biking trails and other hiking trails backing onto the mountain. Popular swimming spot with beach in summer. Quite busy at times.
Went for a nice jog on the well maintained trails. Really nice views and a good challenge for beginner trail runners like me.
Wonderful trails that are well maintained and also offers an off-leash area that is separate from the main trail. The trails also connect to Morrel Sanctuary and Mt. Benson.
Lovely, well maintained trail that goes right around the lake. Only elevated area is at the beginning where you can look at the lake extending below. About 6 km and well marked.
This is an excellent place for swimming or picnicking in summer, or for a walk or run around the lake. Dogs can be off leash on the power line right-of-way south of the lake. You can also hike or bike into the partially-protected forest lands, or the Morrell Nature Sanctuary adjacent to the park - making this one of the most well-preserved and accessible forested areas in the district.
Nice location. Family friendly in the area I was at. Only issue is the bathroom that I located didn't have anywhere to change.
Beautiful easy lake trail - 6 kms - a moderate pace for 2 hours.
Nice trail for a flat run. About 6km around a beautiful lake. Feels very safe. Nice beach there too!
Good place to go on a walk, great place to swim in the summer or walk in the winter
Great spot for a swim or a hike, lap at about an hour or so at my slow pace...
Long loop around a beautiful lake in South Nanaimo just a few minutes off of the highway. I've walked it, kayaked in it and swam in it a few times. Nice place to come on a hot day!
Lovely location for a 45 minute outdoor adventure hiking up and down easy trails or going for a more intense run. The trails around the lake amount to just over 6km and are accessible by mountain bikes, although street bikes could easily do it too. For those not interested in cardio there's also a swimming area, fishing dock, and children's play park.
Beautiful place to walk and unwind. Not bad for swimming and fishing either.
A lovely place to canoe or kayak, no power motors allowed so it is much more serene
Great place to go for a run or hike and dog friendly. Beautiful beaches and the lake is super clean. Trails are well maintained. Has public washrooms and change rooms, drinking fountains. There is also cabins available at the Westwood campground that offers kayak rentals and in pretty sure paddle board too.
Always a lovely lake to visit. GREAT BEACH. Sheltered from the wind usually. And there is a nice long trail that goes around the lake.Great for a day outing, or a picnic, great place to bring the kids. Or just relax in the wilderness. I would highly recommend.
Stunning. Calm. Just beautiful. Super accessible for all sorts of activities.
I have been going here since I was a kid. Excellent walking trails around the lake (be prepared it's probably a couple hours depending on how fast you walk.) Trails are well maintained and good for walking, running, bikes etc. Dog friendly (off leash on the far side of the lake by the power lines). I've gone fishing, (stocked) kayaking and canoeing here but as it's a man made lake, look out for dead heads around the perimeter. Swimming is good but you can get swimmers itch in the summer. Docks, Sandy beaches, forest trails, rocky bluffs, nice views. Hard to beat for somewhere that is more or less "in town"
Visitors to Nanaimo. Lovely well maintained trail. Scenic and shady. We chose to go as a birding expedition but our lack of success was probably a result of poor timing... midday in July. The six kilometres was a tad long for two out of practice oldies but did afford a great sense of accomplishment. Appreciated the washroom facility at both ends of the walk. This trail is very well used. Probably met or were passed by 50 - 60 others during our 3+ hour meander. There is a swimming beach and change rooms at the parking area. We went to the right when facing the lake at the beach.... and were faced with a long uphill climb in the last kilometre. We'd go left if we do it again. Did find lots of interesting natural specimens to photograph and try to identify.
Great lake for swimming, with a lovely 6 kilometre trail around the lake.
This was a fantastic little hike we went on around the lake. I only wish we had been more prepared to do lake activites! Wonderful place for dogs, too. So beautiful. I would come here every day if I could!!
Awesomesauce.had another good swim water is getting warmer.????
Great swimming, soft sand, shallow entry, lovely and abu dante's lake front to enjoy sun or shade.
Love this park! Very family friendly! Nice for jogging, simple hike, walk, or run. Also kids enjoy the small playground by the beach. Two slides, one tire swing, and other activities. In summer there’s always a lifeguard on duty to make sure swimmers are safe. You can also bring your fishing boat or kayak, paddle, etc. Never been to to the washrooms but I’ve seen people go in regularly so it doesn’t look like an issue. It’s also a nice park for dogs. The distance around the lake is about 5k so it would be a wonderful exercise. Easy parking. Some areas have shade from trees if you go further into the parking lot. In summer it closes at 11 and in winter at 9 pm.
Excellent place for a nature walk or a run. If you have a dog there's an off-leash park. The lake is beautiful to swim in and it's not too cold. Highly recommend you check it out.
Beautiful 6k trail around the lake - well marked and well forested. Lake is great temperature to cool off on a warm day.
Stay away and don't tell anyone. I want to keep it all for myself. You could spend a whole day here if you bring your own food. Great walking trails and beautiful water to cool off in afterwards.
Perfect for a summertime camp out. Swimming area and boat launch for non motorized cartop style boats.
A great 6 km walk around the lake. Good for kids and adults alike.
The trail is so relaxing if you don’t want to strain yourself with difficult hikes. It has some great view points of the lake and some great hang out points too if you go with your buddies.
One of my favorite parks in the city, beautiful in every season, a bit too busy during summer as it has a limited space as "beach" but it's a very nice park with a long trail if you enjoy an want to go through it.
Very nice walking trail.
Good place to paddle board
Great place to take in some views, walk the dog or go for a swim. It's always clean and is a great place to go clear your mind after a busy day.
Westwood trail feels like a one hour vacation.
You can take an easy route or various side trails leading to a more challenging loop around the lake. Nice go-to for experienced or inexperienced riders
Great park right within Nanaimo that has something for everybody. The lake itself is great for canoes, kayaks and fishing. There is a beach area for kids and families to enjoy as well some play structures. The biggest draw is the great trail network that is a huge draw for runners and mountain bike riders. Great anytime of year and worth a visit.
Absolutely love this lake and hiking trails. I have not tried the newer bike trail but it looks like a lot of fun the parts I have seen. Now for the hiking trail. It is a slice of paradise. Quiet and beautiful. It is a perfect place for family pics and even wedding pictures. The beaches are very nice and one is even patrolled by a life guard during the summer witch makes it very nice if you wanna take the younger kids. All and all I have loved and enjoyed this little slice of paradise for over 30 years now and my kids are now enjoying it for hopefully the next 30 years. P.s. nice quiet place to fish aswell
Nice park, but usually quite busy.
Great place for hiking, biking, running or just walking. Summer is a great place to swim
Always have Loved this Lake! So Beautiful in any Season!
Very Beautiful Lake. WONderful walking paths
Beautiful park, nice walk through the forest and a beautiful beach to swim and watch the sunset from.
Great 6km loop around the lake. It's relatively flat except for one medium hill. There's a breach and some picnic tables.
Great family business! We buy our dog food here. Very healthy for the pup! Great selection of beef, chicken and Turkey. I live their hotdogs! Yummy!
Great access to a beautiful view with a relaxing trail around the lake. Amazing for any water based activities during the summer.
We love going here, for a walk a swim, or on the boat...
Nice hiking around the lake
This park is beautiful, if you hike around the lake, all of Nanaimos healthiest and nicest people are there. Everyone seems happy, everyone is smiling and if you get the winter blue, put your shoes and I guarantee you will not regret taking this 6km hike:)
Kids loved it but with no life guards there people are putting there canoes in the roped part
Gorgeous walk! The kids also love swimming here.
Loved the views and trail
Beautiful trails, well maintained. Not technical at all but with a large hill on the western side.
Nice little lake, close to home and always great for a dip
This is a beautiful area with a 6km hike around the lake or a great spot for a swim in the summer.
This is a beautiful place with a lovely lake, beach and A+ hiking/walking/running trail right around the entire lake. Can't wait to go again!
This is, for me, another 5 star area. The lake is good for water sports and the loop around it serves joggers, hikers, cyclists, and dogs. Beautiful place regardless of the weather.
Very nice park for a walk or a bike ride
Love this place! Beautiful walking trails, great boating and swimming and great views.
A good solid hike around the lake, clean clear trails make for a hike anyone can do.
Beaut! soft walking paths and separate bike path (steep). Friendly neighbourhood n calm waters
Fun swimming rafting paddle boarding! Needs closer concession
I had no idea at first that this is a man-made lake! It is a beautiful walk around the lake, and a quiet, serene place to hang out.
Beautiful lake... great place to walk the dog, the beach is always crowded though if you want to swim
A beautiful lake to spend for a picnic and a swim. The walking trail around the lake is approx. 6 km. It is lovely.
Love it. Good place for an easy walk with nice trails. Lots of spots for bikes
Beautiful during our Christmas snowfall, showed off the best stops here in Nanaimo!
Trail is well maintained. Easy walk
Beautiful scenery and nice for walking dogs.
Great place to relax and swim
Really nice man made lake, westwood offers two swimming beaches, the first one has a lifeguard and a swimming perimeter for the kids. Second spot further down has a play park, washrooms are available. In the summer season there is usually a food truck or two. The water is amazingly warm! Best lake to swim at as long as you don't mind how busy it gets.
The lake is stellar with a stunning backdrop. There's a lovely trail all the way around (roughly 7km). Parking can be a bit of a squeeze.
Great place for biking running kayaking swimming etc
Love this walk/jog/ adventure/nature.
Nice walk even in the rain, has enough coverage from the trees
Beautiful 6KM hike/walk in Nanaimo.
It is beautiful at the lake, the reason for 4 stars is because there was some garbage on the ground. People not cleaning up after themselves. Otherwise it is amazing!!
One of my fave Nanaimo parks! The beach ramp and railing is a huge asset for accessibility, and the trail is 3/4 accessible and level, making it a great walk, ride or wheel. Wheelchair users should note that the first 1.5 km to the south end of the trail is NOT accessible and involves some steep hills and major roots. Not suitable for strollers, handcycles or wheelchairs. The rest of it is great Mostly flat, paved and reasonably level ground. Another sad thing is that the field house where the washrooms are doesnt' have wheelchair accessible washrooms, which is a tough thing at a beach with an accessible ramp! Otherwise well worth the visit, with tons of accessible parking, beautiful views and a nice trail.
Beautiful...wish the beach was bigger...nice hikes...watch ur children close water gets deep fast...read up on history...allegedly a farm house at the bottom of the lake..quite interesting
easy access and clear trail, it can get pretty busy in the spring/summer time.
Bike trails running trails, off leash park, lake swiming with lifeguard, beautiful views!
Beautiful place to walk around alone or with others :)
Best place to chill, hangout with friends, kayak, swim and go for a run around the lake.
Could use an outhouse half way round but very beautiful. Busy.
Great place for kayaking and nice small beach
Great park and beach. Never seems to get too crowded and good services around the area, washrooms, food truck and paddle board rentals.
Love this place so peaceful ❤️
Amazing beach, floating docks, lifegaurds from 11-6pm, bathrooms and also a stunning easy 5.6 k walk around the lake. Boat launch and great for paddle boarding.
Perfect for summer swims and fall hikes/walks. Watch out for piranhas...
Always a great place to go and chill. Has bathrooms n even a consession furring summer. They say the swimmers itch a here though from all the goose droppings so don't forget to shower once you get home
The trail is great for walking dog.Well kept park
Sandy beach, swimming zones, boat ramp, fairly calm water. Nice for a few hour's break from the city bustle.
The best local park for a summer walk and talk with a bit of a hike, or a peaceful stroll around a lake, as it comes with plenty of shade. At about 5.5 km for the full loop and much more for the connected trails, you can spend a couple of hours or day exploring the area.
Love the walk around the lake so picturesque
Trails are clean from debris and well maintained!
I love this trail. There are plenty of options once you get there. They have biking trails walking trails, and an off leash section for dog users about 2km into the trail. There is a playground, swimming beach, washrooms, doggy bags, maps and trail sign posts telling you how many kms you have left. The trail loops around the lake and is about 6kms it has a boardwalk and a.bord viewing prnfoshong platform which is nice to sit at and enjoy the view of the lake on. There is also bluffs on part of the trail which give you a vantage point to enjoy the scenery. Go check this walk out, it's a beauty.
Still nice after all these years. ????????
I LOVE jogging around here. Everyone is friendly and 6km is absolutely doable.
It's present time to walk with your friends or any one.
Even on rainy days this trail/track is stunning
So calm this time of year. Can't wait to take kids swimming here when it's warmer.
If the suns out, come here. If ya need a good walk/stroll. Come here.
Nice easy trails and lots of fishing spots.
Nice swimming spot, although it's a bit busy most of the time
Good mostly even trail. A hill on the left side, so plan your walk. A few benches around the lake.
One hell of a green and blue space
very popular community park even at early morning. well maintained trails and fantastic views of the lake. a separate trail takes you to morrell sanctuary. lake loop trail is 6km. toilets available by beach and playground area.
A great park, lake and walking trails 6km long. Perfect in summer, excellent in spring and fall and not a bad place in the rain (winter)
Nice views easy walk
Great walking trails and hiking. Access to Mount Benson hike!
A tourist attraction but unknown to strangers. Beautiful, quiet, and wonderful. Watch out for snakes!
A great day to go Swimming in nanaimo And go on a nice walk around the lake
6 km circuit is perfect
Fantastic inner city park. Mnt biking, swimming, hiking, dog walking, jogging trails!! Great place for the family. Sometimes a few too many geese.
Really fun
Great place for swimming, a lot of foot traffic in summer. They have A few picnic tables. A solid spot to jog, big loop around the lake :)
The lake is good. Walk is good. But it's crowded, no parking and people leave garbage every where. Would be nice to see more no littering signs.
Nice walk around the lake
Beautiful park and only minutes from city center.
Awesome place for a walk around lake
Beautiful lake, by far the most family/activity friendly in town. The itch isn't bad till August and the surrounding 6km trail is very well kept and most walkers will exchange a friendly hello. There are 2 separate beaches, one with lifeguards and one without. Plenty of picnic tables, and shaded areas and a food vendor throughout the warm months.
Nice walk. Kept clean. Great picture opportunities
Decent fly fishing. Every cast will catch a small bass.
Nice place to hang out and have a picnic, swim or walk around the lake.
Great place for a run or dip. Or both. But not at the exact same time.
Nice little lake with a great walk. Can be a little busy at times with kids drinking in the park.
Amazing walk, great views along the way
Ok, so Heat Dome weekend, it was 30 by 630am... I love Westwood but The lake was almost warm.. Not long until it's closed for bacteria levels, and I cant wait for the remodel of the park. There was NO parking by 9am
So I am a big fisherman and I enjoyed catching and releasing a couple small mouth bass today as I wondered around the lake. It's a nice and easy hike around the lake, maybe 8K? So anyway I was exploring places to access from the trail so I could cast. At one point half way around the lake I found a lot of sunken log structures which is where bass love to hide. I found a large enough log that floated way out into the water so I prepared to walk out on top of it. As I approached the root cluster that was on the beach covered slightly by surrounding shrubbery, a glint caught my eye. A quick double take and I realized it was a tiny little bottle. The bottle was clear and tiny with a little cork lid and I could see there were some pretty little things inside. It had obviously been purposely left for someone to stumble upon. I carefully took the bottle out of the root structure and I could see a beautiful sparkling greenish sand inside along with a beautiful shell and what appeared to be a note! I was amazed! So I carefully opened the cork from the bottle and set everything down gently so as to not spill the contents. I took from my fishing tackle box a pair of small pliers and with them I retrieved the tiny rolled up piece of paper, slid the brass ring off of it and unraveled it to find beautifully printed words that read "you are beautiful". I have to say this is one of the most wonderful discoveries I have made venturing anywhere in nature aside from witnessing wonderful wildlife. I gently put everything back as it was and replaced the bottle in its hiding spot. I hope any of you reading this might venture out and search for other possible Hidden Treasures around this beautiful Lake. The experience is something that will stick out in my mind and made my day a very exceptional one. Pictures to follow
Quiet. Easy to find of2f-the path beaches for naturistic dips. However, someone had released piranhas into the lake the week before. Might not have swum if there had be a warning posted.
Waiting to complete the trail, but the lake has a charm of it own. The sun makes the water shimmer with a spiritual glow.
Great location to go for a easy or hard bike ride. Go for a walk, enjoy the scenery. Just great place in just about 10 min drive
Favorite spot to go for a walk in Nanaimo ????
The lake is refreshing and warm, with a nice dock and sectioned off area for the kids to swim. We had been here several times for a quick dip in the summer, as we live less than 10 minutes away, but only recently did I actually do the Westwood Lake trail (an easy 6km loop around the entire lake) and can't understand why it took me so long to do it! Absolutely gorgeous walk, with not many people on the trail, and well maintained. Will be doing this trail several more times in the near future!
Gorgeous park with MTB trails, swimming docks, and lakeside paths.
Amazing park and lake so close to town
Don't come, the air is moist and there are plenty of trees, birds and things to do. It's not your thing, I would be hard pressed to find anyone not enjoying themselves here.
Wonderful experience. Loved visiting this beautiful place.
Clean, kid friendly beaches. More picnic tables needed. Lots of parking.
For kids of all ages, large and we'll maintained
What a fantastic walk around the lake. We enjoy recommending this walk to our customers when looking for something active to do in Nanaimo.
Really pleasant trail following the bank of Westwood lake. Great for people of all ages. Easy walking loop.
Took the entire walk (I think 5 km in total) and this is the second time. Terrific trail and such a good way to just stop and take a perspective of your life.
Full hike around Lake is long but fun - the last hill is a big one but awesome walk!
The most beautiful lake with sandy beach and a lovely 6 km trail around the lake
Love hiking here. And jumping in the water to cool down
Great singletrack bike trails and varied terrain. Many of the trails can be ridden in both directions, suitable for intermediate level riders for the most part.
Great if you come by at 10 am fills up fast
Beautiful 6K walk around the lake, 80% in the shade.
Beautiful spot, big area filled with great trails for running.
Fantastic views of the lake, the hiking trail is nice if a bit challenging around the lake. I might check out the bike trail soon
Love this place to relax, walk around the lake, kayak. Beautiful and clean!
First beach is clean and great for swimming, lifeguard on duty and a great walking trail.
Absolute zoo today. Packed and no parking...nice lake though
Very popular place, incredibly busy in the summer, lucky if you can get a parking space, but great for walks, paddle boarding, kayaking, and more.
Well maintained trails, easy walk, big parking lot.
Gorgeous, well groomed trail. Perfect for walking with your dogs. 6 km around so it's a nice length.
This is by far my favorite spot in beautiful Nanaimo. The lake is absolutely gorgeous. The water is crystal clear and pleasant for swimming. There are several spots around the lake where you could find piece in solitude, just sit down and think or meditate. There is a 6 km long hiking trail around the lake. Not challenging, very pleasant. Good for hiking with kids. Dogs are allowed, but leashed only. There are a few picnic tables. Good size parking lot. I wish the washroom was bigger and better maintained. Not sure if the change room was closed due to COVID-19 or non-existent, but I struggled with changing from swimming suit to dry cloth in that tiny stall with no hooks.
This lake is a very nice place to go but during the day it is extremely hard to find parking during the summer! Since so many people go here it can seem crowded at times and there isn't too many options for shade. Other than that it is a great place for the whole family!
Off leash dog area has no access to the water. Boo!
A great place to hike or bike. Tons of trails with varying degrees of difficulty.
Westwood Lake is a true gem. Swimming, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, strolling, off leash dog area and picnics. All just minutes from downtown. Parking can be crowded in the summer but there are plans for more. There's a boat ramp, public washrooms, swimming rafts and children's park as well. Who could ask for more in a public park?
This is a great walk. Has a few hills but they aren't that steep. Views are nice and there are a variety of things to look at and explore. Need to be careful for the first 500 or so meters as there are many pet owners who dont clean up after their animals.
Sandy beach great for the kids and for swimming. Lots of opportunity to kayak and paddle board as well.
Excellent trail around the lake Bikink or walking .
Going to be spending most mornings up here - great way to get in some exercise!
A great little local gem!
Gorgeous sunset, lots of people getting fresh air and exercise. Plenty of mud (it's January) so wear appropriate shoes.
Scenic path to walk or cycle around the lake, nice place to swim or kayak.
Beautiful hiking trails.
Wonderful for any sort of get together. Paddle boarding, kayaking, and a walk/run loop are just a few examples.
Nice wide, well maintained trails, around a gorgeous lake. Dedicated swimming areas as well.
Beautiful Park! 6 km trail around the lake, designated life guard in the swimming area, lots of sand and grassy areas.
I've been going here for 38 years , a Nanaimo treasure beautiful spot and my children get to have that experience too.????
Great lake for swimming and walking.
Ot the best water but a good place to take the kids in the summer usually very busy. Right in nanaimo. 2 dandy beaches. And at times lots if goose poop. I think they clean it. Life guards on duty in the 1 swim area. Concession /hot dog stand and picnic tables. Good in town getaway.
Great place for walks, biking, or swimming.
Its a very nice walk/ run but people don't know how to share the trail, it is supposed to be an ON LEASH park except for the off lease section that is very well marked but there is always a dog off leash running around trying to be friendly but it will be unfortunate when something bad happens because of horrible owners.
A beautiful 6km trail for running and walking, two beaches for kids to play on, a playground, free parking and it backs onto even more trails for runners, dogs and hikers. What's not to love?
Awsome trails and fishing
Beautiful lake at the base of Mt Benson. Great for all levels of walkers, runners and bikes.
Great fishing and nice public facilities.
They have started cleaning the beach of goose poo. So its fantastic now!
One of the best Lake beaches in Nanaimo
An easy trail to hike. The lake always looks pretty.
Beautiful scenic walk. The park is so lovely. I am only confused with the loop though. Great beach area. Also, have great trail for walking dog. It has two parking area from what I saw.
Great running location, one lap of the lake is 5.8 km, flat soft trail with one very short climb.
We come here regularly with the kids to walk around the lake.
What an amazing beach and area. They have a section of the beach/water that has lifeguards, the rest of the beach is beautiful sand with lots of picnic tables. There's a bathroom/change room available for convenience and a small playground for the kids. Parking is not too bad and the beach is super close too!
Great place for the day hiker or family outing. From the beachfront you can spend a day enjoying fun in the sun for the whole family. In summer season you can enjoy the large swimming area with lifeguards on duty. There are excellent trails, rich in wildlife to walk and run around the entire lake. Also you'll find extensive mountain bike trails that you can spend the day on. They have large Change rooms, picnic tables, and a large free parking lot. There's a large off leash green space for your pets on the far side of the lake. There are no stores or coffee shops around the lake. The lake is clean as it is mountain fed.
Beautiful lake and awesome trails!
A really nice a quite place to spend some chill time with either your family or your friends. Clean natural view with trees and water. It's very refreshing.
This is a good place to swim, use light water craft, home and mountain bike. Beautiful paths and trees in the area.
Wonderful walk/hike through gorgeous woods around the lake!
A nice place to hike, run or cycle. 6 km easy loop. Also go for a swim
Great 6 km hike at this lovely lake. Well marked trails, off shoots for bikes or further exploring. Took us about 2 hours, we stopped for pics quite often. Really enjoyable, highly recommend ????
Very nice lake for a walk around or kayaking.
Was sunny, beautiful outdoors. Good walk.
Beautiful clean beach with lifeguards is awesome. More seating close to the beach would be nice for people who come with dogs and can't be on the beach.
Fantastic place to cool off! Can almost ALWAYS find parking! Love it!!
Beautiful and tranquil.
Fantastic location to bring the family. Has a play ground. Washrooms. Walking trails. Beach area. Clean.
Nice place to be Busy in the summer but still worth it
Beautiful area with gorgeous scenery. Lots of spots to fish and also has a designate swimming area
The trail at westwood is perfect for running and pretty save. Cougars have been reported but it's heavily used. Great all year around but it can get pretty muddy in the fall and winter rains.
Horrible place. Goose poop everywhere.not worth the risk with all the smash and grabs in the area recently.
Family fun, a place to kayak
It's a beautiful spot with great views and a lovely trail!
Such a beautiful place! My little family & I love to spend our days off here fishing or hiking the trails❤
A must, whether you want to hit the water, go paddleboarding or kayaking, walking, or just lay on the beach. Trails go around the lake through the forest giving you beautiful views of nature.
This is a beautiful lake park. The trail around the lake is 6 km and very well marked. The back section has an off leash dog area, but be sure to keep your dog on a leash until you get to that section. The lake is crisp and refreshing for a swim, with life guards on duty in the summer.
We had the best time here while visiting Nanaimo. The water was perfect and the park is beautiful. Really nice hiking/ bike trail around the lake.
Great local place for swimming kayak and a little fishing
Really nice Lake Park. You can swim at your own risk. The water is usually pretty cold. There's a trail around the lake 5.7 kilometers. Lots of Canadian geese. Lots of dog walkers.
6 kms walk alongside lake is awesome.
Beautiful spot for a morning or afternoon walk. Short trail is about 5.8 kms
Great place to go for a walk or run 6km loop is a real treasure of Nanaimo
Great walk. Scenic walk. Go off hours Hike, bike, or run. Bring your dog, on leash of course. Enjoyable!
Mountain biking, hiking, swimming, fishing it has it all. Great place right in town.
Always a good fun spot to swim
Nice lake to swim in or go for a walk around it
So much to do here! Great for running
During this recent heatwave it was an absolute delight to cool of in the evenings with a dip. Nice sandy beaches. Nice docks to swim to and the water is clean. Beautiful surroundings. I appreciated that people are social distancing even in the water.
Great path way to have a walk , a little crowded ob the beach at times but prob one of the cleanest lakes we have in nanaimo
Beautiful park for zombies!
So great! It is perfect having lifeguards at a lake in the city!
Good fishing.Beautiful scenery. But it gets busier there every year.
This walk is very beautiful but I won’t lie it’s pretty long. I don’t think we realized how long the loop was until we were 3/4 done. Best views are facing towards the mountain the other side is majority forest! If you wanted to skip the hike just walk along the parking lot side and turn back instead of doing the entire 6k! Overall gorgeous though!
A lot of trials to hike our downhill bike!????
Great for hiking and mtb
Great place for good walk or hike
Nice. But don't swim there all the time. Its not the cleanest.
Its nice and quiet but it has a lot of geese poop on the area ....
Could use a better playground but still a really nice place to take the family.
A popular local favorite, nicely maintained sand beaches, it's a shallow lake, so it's warm in the summer, and freezes over in the winter. A beautiful trail wraps around the lake, not quite wheelchair accessible, but very easy. The one backside is the geese you will encounter on the beach from time to time are quite bold, and will make off with your lunch if you aren't watching.
Great weather! (Summer) Lovely place.
I grew up next to Westwood. Couldn't ask for a better neighbourhood park. It's got something for everyone, and is as big an adventure or as small a stroll as you need it to be. The lake takes roughly 1.5-2 hours to walk around but theres options to make it longer. It's seen heavier traffic over the years as people come to realize just how good it is, but because its so vast it doesn't often feel crowded - except at the beaches during summer. It has trails connecting to Morrell Sanctuary, Mt. Benson, everything in between, and much more beyond that. Like I said, Ive been hiking, running, swimming, and mountain biking there my whole life and I still havent done it all. Take an hour or take a whole day and check it out, I would argue it is a top Nanaimo destination.
Beautiful lake, sandy beaches, rock bluffs, and a cool trail around it. Bike frendly, pet friendly, Adult and kid friendly. For everything else theres mastercard! Lol
Popular Trail especially on a warm summer weekend. Parking can be a problem, but there are other access points besides the park.
Beautiful lake, excellent beach, really nice trail. Also has washrooms
Beautiful 6.1 km walk ????
Great views and nice lil cozy lake to swim at with the whole family.
As usual, a beautiful sunny day on the beach. Lots of people enjoying the 6.5km walk around the lake.
Good
Very good place to swim bike and walk with your dog's
Nice place for a walk, but too crowded during the weekends.
The air is so sweet and refreshing. Trails were easy to walk as well.
I loved swimming here up until i lost my glasses in the lake!
Great lake for kayaking
A spectacular warm mountain lake close to town. Great for family groups & fishing. No motor boats allowed. Ultimately peaceful!
One of best parks in Nanaimo area
It was a great walk...will be doing it again real soon...
Pretty trail. Did the whole loop in an hour. Worth it.
Great setting and peaceful walk / hike
Wonderful lakeside trail all way around! Very peaceful and pleasant. Public washrooms at the start were open and appreciated. Easy free parking.
Swimming and a quick kayak paddle at the lake. Clean and definitely a gem in the city! Bonus is there seems to always be parking available.
Great place to hike and swim, parking is tough on a nice day.
Not to many peoples.
Lovely area and great for walking the dog.
My favorite place during summer time in Nanaimo ????Family friendly, public washrooms and beautiful trails! Beautiful nature in the heart of Nanaimo, highly recommended ????
Great spot! We all had a wonderful walk around the lake. Something for everyone to love... the off leash on mountain side of lake is pretty cool for the pups also!!
The water is beautiful for swimming, kayaking or SUPing, and the 6km trail around it is a great run or walk with lots of viewpoints out over the water. I would come here every day if I could!
Great park. 6 km running loop. Awesome sandy beaches. Playground. Fishing. An off leash dog area around the back of the lake. Lifeguards on duty in the summer. Tons of Parking.
Clean and well looked after. The geese are hilarious as well. One of my favourite parks in town!
Place for families, individuals, to enjoy.. good walking as well
6 km trail, with a bunch of smaller trails, good to bike or walk, I like to swim here in the summer, we go fishing here too! Has a small park for kids, and rest rooms. Only downside is not enough parking for the nice weather days.
Nice way to beat the heat! Great swimming beach
A great 6kms walk around the lake.
Beautiful 6km walk around the lake...plenty for kids to do...crowded neighborhood nearby and large RVpark and private camp ground.. Only day use at the lake
Beautiful park with lots of things to do
Lovely moderately easy hike around the lake.
Beautiful lake, good for fishing, a swim or a hike!
Love this lake so much. The trail around the lake is also wonderful for exercise and meditation.
Nice lake with a fairly level path around lake approx 4km. Lots of hiking trails in behind lake like Westwood ridge.
Absolutely stunning place, it's crazy to know this is right in our backyard
I love it here BUT I did get swimmers itch from here ???? but walk around the lake was Lovely, won't be swimming again unfortunately. Would be waaaaay better if they had showers/change rooms.
Beautiful lake, great water,nice sand.
very lovely place to take a walk any season of the year.
Quiet in the evenings. Lots of puddles after the rain on the gravel/earthen trail, so be prepared for wet feet! One of Nanaimos many beautiful parks.
Amazing network of walking and mountain bike trails through the forest and a great off-leash dog park on the west side of the lake.
Great day for a swim! 1200m
Great place for a walk
Nice walk around the lake. Easy hour and a quarter on a forested trail.
Great trails. Nice swimmable lake with life guards on duty!
Always nice to visit, summer, fall, winter and spring! Walk bike fish swim.
It is a pleasant, easy walk. Nice views of the lake. Walked it on a Monday during the day and there weren't too many other people around.
Nice trail - slippery though if raining or snowy
Great location. Alo of parking. Swimming and hiking.
Great swimming lake in Nanaimo a couple small Sandy beaches and a walking trail around the lake.
Good trail and good walk. About 6 and a bit kilometres all the way around and a bit of everything. Forest, lake, a few rivers, a little bit for everyone.
A really lovely place to walk or stop for a picnic. Haven't swum there yet.
Great location with excellent hiking trails around the lake. Free parking and restrooms.
6 km trail, great trail
Another great Nanaimo park. Excellent trails and absolutely stunning scenery. Well marked with markers and needed information.
Greate place for swimm and hiking
Great beach. Great walking trails. Wonderful wooded experience so very close to urban center.
Great place to fish and to walk around with the dog and kids
Great place for anyone to visit,MTV walking, running ,and water sports. I didn't give it 5 stars because city needs to upgrade washroom facilities these were built in the 50's maybe a decent change room and bike wash station, not to mention the actual toilets horrible for major tourist and local attraction pretty poor. Maybe take a look at other small island city's have done.
Great for walking, biking, hiking, picnics, beach days small boating/kayaking or just a quick dip in the cool refreshing water!!
great path nice small beaches
Great trails nice views
Family fun or a trail to test your cardio...this place is awesome.
Good trails, beautiful views.
This place is amazing. The beach along with the hiking trails
Nice easy hike pretty area well maintained trail, pet allowed.
It has a wide open area to sit and swim
Nice place to swim. Great for the whole family
6 km round trail, easy access for walking around, jogging or mountain biking. There is also a short loop can be accessed from right hand side facing the lake. Beautiful views. Sometimes in summer it could be over flowed by people enjoying the beach area. Swimming is okay but need to watch out for swimmer's itch.
Nice lake with an awesome trail!
Great hiking trails beautiful surroundings there are trails well-groomed around the lake or more rustic trails to enjoy
Beautiful nature trails.
By far nanaimos best lake.
The best place for kids and best for cycling and walking
Nice running trail, lots of friendly cougars but watch out for the man in the monkey mask
Beautiful lake with a nice sandy beach for swimming. The water is quite warm and there is plenty of sunny and shady areas around to relax in. The trail around the lake is a really peaceful little walk that's well worth doing. The only thing it could use is some more parking since it can get quite busy here.
Nick trail around the lake. Good for walking and jogging.
If you want to get fresh air, and see some beautiful natural things, if you love to walk and ride a bike, here is a wide place to do that. Invite your loved ones and friends to share this enjoyment with you. You will always feel safe with all the nice people around.
Always fun, sandy beaches, small playground, nice lake, long trails
We like to walk the trail around the lake. Easy and scenic. About 6 kms.
Great trails and shadie walking paths.
Great place to go for a family walk The views are great and it’s such a beautiful park with a large lake in the center
Trail was a little muddy but normal for this time of year
It was a beautiful day for one of our favorite hikes.
Friendly ppl staff places very clean very nice I would recommend it for anybody
Been going to this park since the 80's! It's a really nice 6km walk around the lake. Also good for running and mountain biking.
Come here for the walk 6.1 km. Nice and easy with basically one big hill. If you want a better workout with an amazing lookout, head up the westwood ridge located on the back side of the lake by way of the powerlines.
Awesome place for a run, 6.5k full circle, only ran it twice today, get ready marathon.
Nice park but busy. Not enough parking available in peak season.
Great place to walk around, swim and fish
Great place for a long walk with your family and puppies
Beautiful lake with a good trail around it. You are in the wilderness but not far from town.
It's nice but gets very busy in the summer
This lake has two lifeguards around. There’s a small floating deck further in the lake that you have to swim to. Water is warm and has shallow area. Lots of people had paddle boards, kayak or tube. It’s also a nice place to go for a stroll or bike.
It will close in the summer sometimes.....I really like it
6km walk around the lake,a lot of people and dog
Busy beach, in the heat of summer of course. Walked along the trail. Great park.
Great 6km running trail. The lake is also fantastic to swim in. Shallow and warm water.
As far as public swimming locales in nanaimo, westwood has everything you could want (yet on occasion, somthings you dont want.) Slowly moving waters can cause problems with hygenic swimming but those problens are usually closely monitored and publicly stated. So keep out an eye for signs posted for swimmers itch ect. But dont let that discourage you. All man made lakes have had their seasonal problems. From geese to see, beautiful trails to walk around, a playground for the kids and dispite what i said before, a refreshing swim (that ive taken thousands of times), straight on to the sheer population boost in the hot summer months for people to gather and meet one another on a nice sandy beach. Theres a ton of great reasons to take a gander, far fewer reasons to go elseware. I would have given it 5 stars but it just cant beat the river IMO.
Beautiful and peaceful. Good path right around the lake
Great place for an afternoon paddle. Big beach, lots of space to launch kayaks, easy access to boat launch, close to parking.
Our favourite place to go for a walk or hike. Anytime of year is a great time.
Great walk bike jog swimming spot
Lovely walk AROUND the lake. Some steep areas. Limited parking especially in the summer.
Nice walk along the lake on the east side and through timber adjacent to the lake on the west side. Was a little muddy the day I was there was still relatively busy. Courteous dog owners had their pets leashed. Mountain bike trails off the main trail.
Great beautiful place, fantastic to take your dog
Wonderful spot for walks. People need to look out for dog feces on the trail though as owners aren't always considerate of others
Great place to hike and meet friends. Nice lake with a nice bistro next to it serving great food. Free parking. Close to town.
The best park in town with lots of hiking trails for all skill levels!
Great walk around the lake and great for mm
Great spot to walk the pupper, float or go to the beach. Round trip is about 1hr.
We got caught in a freak hail storm last week so we didn't really get to check it out. Planning another afternoon rendezvous soon....stay tuned
This is a real gem in Nanaimo. Go for a swim in the summer, or hike the 6km loop any time of year. Perfect for taking the family or walking your dog. Most of the trail is flat and accessible, with the exception of one big hill near the beginning. There are also challenging mountain bike trails, and a dog off leash area.
Beautiful and clean, nice little lake located right in the city of Nanaimo! Great swimming too! Sandy beach and public bathrooms. Love the hikes and stunning arbutus trees surrounding the lake.
Lots of parking available, washrooms on site, beautiful sandy beach, calm but not so cristal clear lake to swim in. The trail around the lake is amazing for walks or runs. Crowded at times.
Office persons was sort of rude. Left myself and another person wait 10 minutes while she finishes a personal conversation on the phone. Very rude toward people with pets. Very rude in her people skills. Park is nice but not set up for easy use. Our truck and camper is 55 feet and it was very very tight get in and out. Ten minutes and lits of backing in and out to wiggle in. We were parked in a main travel were people had to use out lot and drive to get to the wash rooms. Lots of noise and kept our dogs up late. Will stay here again cause of park employees treatment.
Great path around the lake for a walk/run. In the summer you can rent a paddle board. The sandy beach is not very long so it can get filled up on busy summer days
This is an amazing place to spend summer days and a fantastic place to hike throughout the year!
Westwood Lake is an awesome place to visit, lots of outdoor activities to do there, I mountain bike and paddleboard at the lake and lots of people walk or jog as well
Beautiful swimming lake with walking path around. Good fishing as well.
Beautiful lake to paddle around in.
Beautiful, clean, multi use. Paddle board, bike, hike!
Quite nice crowded though, nice trail system through the woods.
Beautiful park.Great place to swim.
Such a beautiful spot to enjoy. Nice to walk or bike around
Long walk but very peaceful. Lots of joggers and dog walkers. sandy beacheach is great for having lunch or playin with the little ones
Going here since I was a child. As beautiful as ever.
I like the place. I come more often here to walk or jog.
Beautiful trail around the lake, week maintained. We've done it with a double wide stroller before but it was tough on some of the major uphills and root bound areas.
Love it! ..... always have since I was a kid.
Westwood Lake is amazing. Something for everyone! Bathrooms at entrance. Lifeguards on duty in a roped off area. Kids' playground. The lake trail is a stunning walk. Well maintained and clean; the City does a great job. Thankful for the hydro-line, off leash area. I visit a couple times a week. Have arthritis; am quite comfortable. See lots of joggers and kayakers. Stunning beauty right in Nanaimo.
Beautiful trail for walking with animals or friends or going for a run
Nice lake calm water good for kayaks but the parking situation is atrocious
Beautiful walking trail.
