Gorgeous place especially at night! See a picture I clicked there :)
An absolute must do when visiting the Avalon. I go at least once a year, and it doesn't disappoint. Great food, gorgeous views.
If you are traveling southern shore from St. John's the Ferryland Light House is not to be missed. It's a short walk out to the lighthouse but certainly worth it as you find yourself out on the point with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean on all sides. Inte Summer the Lighthouse sells picnic lunch baskets of great food for you to enjoy in beautiful atmosphere. (You need to reserve your basket ahead of visit). Being out on the point into the Atlantic it is often windy and cool so bring a blanket and find a place to sit out of the wind and enjoy the view.... If your their in early summer you just might see whales and Icebergs.
Amazing Staff. Jill the owner is wonderful. Went above and beyond to acommodate my mother. View was beautiful. Food was amazing.
Great place for a lighthouse picnic
Very beautiful spot! There were 6 whales feeding and one breaching!
Great destination. Out of the way and a hike, but worth it.
Even though we went on a miserable rainy September day we enjoyed this very much. The food was very good.
Fantastic. Beautiful spot for some spectacular views (was beautiful even on our foggy visit) and wonderful food.
The picnic food was extremely delicious and the views were absolutely amazing.
Easy 15 min hike from parking lot. Amazing scenery!
great food in a great setting. fyi they have coffee too!
Nice walk, stunning views.
WOW!!! Ferryland is beautiful! 5 stars + We brought our own picnic as the lighthouse was closed on the weekend we visited. The lighthouse itself is beautiful sitting upon the cliffs. The landscape is serene. I could honestly spend all day laying on a blanket on the cliff listening to the ocean. The day we visited we watched seals playing in the water while eating our lunch. A must see!
Lighthouse picnic is always so delicious! Great service and fresh food. (need to make reservations in advance)
Nice short hike, 1 hour in total. Great spot for a picnic or lunch if weather is not too windy.
Expensive, a nice experience though. Would just bring my own picnic next time
Absolute beautiful. One day trip very easy and this may be spectacular by clear time and blue sky! The walk is short!
Stunning views! We were able to see whales breach from our high perch on the cliffs overlooking the ocean! One of the many gems of Newfoundland!
Breathtaking scenery and the lunch that they served was delicious. We spent a couple of hours watching the ocean (saw some whales!) and taking in the scenery. Enjoyed every minute!
We went to the Ferryland Lighthouse this morning to see the sunrise! We hiked in to the lighthouse and got there before the sun peaked the horizon. The trail was icy in places, but out near the lighthouse there was basically no snow or ice, and was great for walking around. The lighthouse is a beautiful sight, and we had an unobstructed view for the fantastic sunrise! 10/10 recommend.
Great hike
Worth the drive from St. John's. The scenery is amazing. A 25 min walk gets you hungry for an awesome picnic lunch complete with homemade lemonade and dessert. We saw loads of sea birds and a seal. No whales this time.
This is a fun hike. First you drive on a narrow dirt lane )with the cliff and the sea on one side) to the middle of the peninsula. Then you start the hike with a narrow trail with sea on both side. Then you'd be hiking through the serenity of trees before emerging to a clearing where the lighthouse stands. The weather when I was there made the whole journey surreal and thrilling. We drove through thick fog and drizzly rain to the parking lot, walked through stormy winds on the trail with rough, growling sea on both sides to the calm and warm embrace of the trees. Finally we emerged to see the lighthouse unveiled through the thick fog. For me it was hike on a rollercoaster of emotions! If you visit on a sunny day, or even better at sunset, you'll see the lighthouse as it is depicted on the storybooks.
Try the picnic, it's amazing!
Very cool Old Lighthouse building with an amazing view. It almost looks like you can see Greenland from there.
Great experience with great food and scenery.
Great place to visit with or without the picnics. Views are great and you get a sense of why this was an important staging areas for the British military. The archeological dig is a bit of a stretch as this is written history that is being shown here.
Beautiful views, spoted numerous whales. Unfortunately the lighthouse is not open to the public
Amazing as always . Make a point to do this at least once a year. Delicious food and a view that is simply amazing .
Amazing place for a relaxing picnic
A beautiful place for a short hike, a picnic, and just hanging out. You can hear the water hit the rocks, you can see seals swimming in the channel, and when in the hottest days the breeze will cool you down. Worth the drive out for sure. Great for pictures, too.
Beautiful scenery combined with a delicious lunch. The food was fresh with great flavour.
Nice hike up the trail to the lighthouse. Bring suitable footwear, like running shoes, it's a rocky trail. We didnt do the picnic, just the trail up and back. Was really foggy there today.
Beautiful short hike to the lighthouse (approximately 2.5 kms from the halfway parking lot and 5.5 kms from the lower parking lot) Even when the fog started to roll in the views were breathtaking. We pre ordered a picnic basket for two and enjoyed it on cliff side with the best ocean scenery.
Enjoyed lunch on site. The food is delicious, especially the lemonade! Great opportunity to sit among the cliffs, eat lunch, and whale watch. There is a long walk from parking area to the lighthouse, but ATV rides are available for a small fee. Plan on spending an hour and a half to two hours to enjoy this opportunity.
Absolutely the best picnic ever. Food was so so so good, staff were so accommodating and views spectacular. Took two years to reserve but well worth the wait.
A very good place to have picnic. You will need to book in advance if you want a picnic basket from the restaurant at the base of the lighthouse. The view of the ocean is breathtaking and if you are lucky, whales too can be seen at a relatively near distance from the shore. The last bit of the journey to the picnic area is by foot, so wear proper hiking shoes
Food was delicious and the view was amazing even though it was super foggy
Amazing place to have a picknick !! The food was lovely the place amazing view . Bonus a couple of whales
The scenery is breathtaking.
Thankfully I have been there before because the day we went, it was very windy and raining. I'm happy to note that they now have rides up to the lighthouse. It's a bit of a walk.
Great view. Pity I was there on a day when the picnics are not open.
Best food in Newfoundland! Really wonderful picnic lunch with incomparable scenery.
Beautiful scenery. Wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Half hour walk to lighthouse.
Omg this seriously was one of the most amazing meal experiences we've ever had! One of the top 3 highlights of our trip to Newfoundland in June 2019! The scenery was absolutely stunning. The food was delicious and very fresh. There is a bit of a walk in on rough gravel so get there with enough time to enjoy it and not feel rushed. Absolutely make your reservation well in advance. We found the most perfect spot to sit in the sun, sheltered from the wind, soft spongy earth under our blanket which was supplied. While we sat and enjoyed our lunch we saw an iceberg off in the distance, a seal playing in the surf below us, a whale briefly surface a couple times just off shore, and enjoyed the colors and sounds of the massive waves breaking on the cliffs below us. A little piece of heaven, my husband even enjoyed a brief nap after we ate.
Beautiful scenery and picnic food is spot on. I had curry chicken sandwich very tasty and homemade lemonade with salad and carrot cake. All items were tasty.
One of the best tourist attractions in Newfoundland!
Easy walk. Good light meal and beautiful scenery. All you need for a wonderful afternoon
A very long up hill walk. More for young people. They have food available but I think you must order ahead of time. Very nice view
It was a very nice walk up to the light house
18 years and going strong, the Ferryland Light House picnic is a must if you are in the area. Book WELL ahead. About 30.00 per adult and 15 per child, I think. This year we got a hearty sandwich from a list of choices, delicious Orzo salad, delicious desert, and hand made lemonade. We had ours at 2 pm and ended up skipping supper because we were full!
Cute lighthouse with a stunning view. As with everything in the area, it's quite breathtaking, but takes a bit to get to. We couldn't go into the actual lighthouse as it was closed. There is a bit of a walk as vehicles aren't allowed past a point. Gets a bit windy around the coast. Cars can be parked and the walk the rest of the way is about 5 or so mins and it isn't too bad, there is a bit of an incline. It's also free, and part of the Irish loop.
Great spot for a hike and picnic with the kids.
The view was breathtaking and the food was amazing. They even provide a ride to and from the lighthouse from your vehicle.(Just have some cash with you for the ride). Or you could walk. A beautiful place and a must see for all!
Absolutely a beautiful place to walk and possibly watch some whale if they are about feeding. Excellent scenery, the air is amazing.. Almost heaven!!!
Wow! Spectacular view! Amazing meal! Just a wonderful atmosphere. The lighthouse ladies made our visit a truly beautiful one. Desserts are to die for! We are repeat customers for good reason! ????
We stumbled upon this location by accident, seeing a car going up a cliff and thinking "We should do that". We were so glad we did. This was one of the top spots on our trip. The scenery is amazing. It was foggy, so we didn't see much animal life like some of the other commentators, but even so it was spectacular.
Really awesome spot. Sadly I had a hair in my food, but I would go back & give this place another shot. The views are stunning and there are great photo opportunities.
Loved it! Loved every breath-taking and delicious moment! Gorgeous scenic stroll to end up in a place that makes me remember why I live here. Lovely and friendly staff, who prepared and delivered the tastiest lunch. The ham and brie sandwich, salad, scone, and lemonade were second to none.Kudos to those who made it!The bread was, honestly, the most enjoyable that I have ever had. You really need to spend at least a few hours taking in the view, and nibbling on the generously portioned food. And watching the ocean's inhabitants put on a little show. A fabulous day surrounded by the best that nature has to offer. We cannot wait to visit again!!
