REVIEWS OF Wood Buffalo National Park of Canada IN Alberta

Amazing place to take family on vacation. 65 kms (from Fort Smith, nearest town) into deep forest No internet or cell phone coverage No electricity No paved road No running water Buffalo and bear visiting your backyard. But Parks Canada has included everything you need for a family even with little kids at their log cabins. Love Aurora cabin looking over to Pine Lake. This Lake has a long shallow sandy beach. Ideal for canoeing. Cabin has Kitchen with propane stove Fireplace Camp fire Flush toilet (during summer) Day use and camping area also available. The perfect place to go on vacation if you love adventure and solitude. Highest chances for Aurora watch. Check out the photos. Bad— distance from Edmonton. Would have been very good if this park could be accessed from Fort McMurray. Then, lots of mosquitoes. But bug spray will take care of it to some extent.

Wood Buffalo Park is it only the largest national park in Canada, it is also the second largest National Park in the world, a UNESCO world heritage site, as well a the world’s largest dark sky preserve (the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada recently gave its stamp of approval as a dark sky preserve). As a dark sky preserve, it’s naturally a great place for viewing the Northern Lights. Wood Buffalo National Park is locates in the southern part of the Northwest Territories, and crosses into the Northern Part of Alberta. From Yellowknife, it’s a 6 to 7 hour drive from Yellowknife. You can easily break your trip down to Wood Buffalo National Park in two or even three days if time permits. There are lots of other attractions and stops you can make on your drive down. Last but not least, Wood Buffalo National Park is home to the largest heard of free roaming wood Bisons. So, if you’re in the area, whether it be in Northern Alberta or the Southern part of the Northwest Territories, you’ll definitely want to make the drive to Wood Buffalo National Park.

Absolutely breathtaking place! My first time driving through I seen a herd of maybe 30 or so buffalo and many calves. It was a sight I was looking forward to for a long time. Those animals are truly majestic. You don't get to see that everyday. It's a memory I'll cherish for the rest of my life

The park ranges in elevation from 183 m (600 ft) at the Little Buffalo River to 945 m (3,100 ft) in the Caribou Mountains. The park headquarters is located in Fort Smith, with a smaller satellite office in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta. The park contains one of the world's largest fresh water deltas, the Peace-Athabasca Delta, formed by the Peace, Athabasca and Birch Rivers. It is also known for its karst sinkholes in the north-eastern section of the park. Alberta's largest springs (by volume, with an estimated discharge rate of eight cubic meters per second), Neon Lake Springs, are located in the Jackfish River drainage. Wood Buffalo is located directly north of the Athabasca Oil Sands. This area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for the biological diversity of the Peace-Athabasca Delta, one of the world's largest freshwater deltas, as well as the population of wild bison. On June 28, 2013, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada designated Wood Buffalo National Park as Canada's newest and the world's largest dark-sky preserve. Parks Canada claims that the designation will help preserve nighttime ecology for the park’s large populations of bats, night hawks and owls, as well as providing opportunities for visitors to experience the northern lights. The Wood Buffalo National Park had planned to celebrate the new designation with a Dark Sky Festival on August 23–25, 2013, featuring camping, astronomical presentations, a planetarium experience, and night sky viewing opportunities.

We drove down from Yellowknife for a 5 day tour of the south slave, the centre in Fort Smith was interesting, we drove down to Pine Lake Campground about an hour(s) south of Fort Smith. The campground was empty mid week allowing to choose the sweetest spot. More than enough free firewood, unlike NWT parks where you have to pay. Biggest laugh was my wife suggesting we snuggle in the tent just as forest firefighters strolled by after clearing trees. The lake has an awesome sand beach, Weather was not the nicest so we never made it into the lake. I understand it is much busier on the weekend than midweek.

Very large park with interesting trails and a high chance of encountering buffalo by the side of the road. Don't drive at night, because these large animals like to sleep on the road and they are dark and virtually invisible! This park has the largest night sky preserve in the world, so it's a fantastic place to see the Northern lights! Some of the trails were closed for maintenance while we were there, but we're managed to explore anyway :)

I am giving this a 4star rating because it is a nice place to take a stroll or hike if you are older and need level ground. This is easy walking if you have a stroller and or might be old and use a cane to walk with, but this is also a nice walk for anyone. Hike down some of the single track trails to the river for some beautiful views. I didn't see much wildlife this trip but the right time of year should be some great picture opportunities for wild flowers and birds. Along the park trails are signs of different flowers and wildlife to look for. Very educational. This would be a great spot to bring children on an educational field trip. If you want avid mountaineous trails to hike... skip this. If you want a simple hike or walk this trail is it. Oh, one negative I have and not really anything you can do about it is highway 11 road noise. I love hearing nature... not semi trucks or vehicles. But other than that, a great place to visit. It also has picnic tables for a lunch. Just remember to clean up after yourself. We lose access to parks when we don't take care of our resources.

Travis Mason

What a great place. We stayed at the Queen Elizabeth Territorial park campground. What a wonderful place. HUGE I MEAN HUGE!!?? pull through sites. The only drawback is not enough bathrooms. We drove around a lot and saw lots of Wood Buffalo. We even saw some calves. We saw golden eagles, martens, black bears one with a cub and a couple whooping cranes at the salt plains.
