Its on my biannual Alberta to do list. The place never disappoints, specially if you are a nature lover and like to see animals in their natural habitat. The place also has a golf course, multiple trails and camping sites and lakes of all sizes scattered on the park land. Ample parking available.

Wonderfully quiet...no trains or highway noise. Dry-camping only in a former parking lot, which is okay. I much prefer writing positive reviews but this one takes the cake! Bless the camping staff for trying but the federal government has surely screwed up simple camping management, beyond belief. In 30+ years of camping, this one rings as the most mis-managed of them all. We phoned twice in the morning to ensure there was space, which we were told was easily available. Upon arriving at noon, no one could be found to check in, with a sign saying they'd return at 2:45pm. On the building is a sign indicating self-registration but no way to do it, so we found a spot and set up our trailer. At 2:45, my wife went over to check in and was advised that we couldn't have that spot because someone else had booked it (yet the spot remained empty last night) so we have to move to a different spot. At the campground is another sign indicating self-checkin but no way to do it. When we return, someone is already in the spot we now are supposed to occupy, which meant another trip back to registration. In the end we both had to move because this management couldn't fight their way out of a a wet kleenex. What a colossal screwup that only could be orchestrated by too much government interference. We're out of here and we won't be back.

It’s about 30 mins drive from Edmonton. Worth it. The first time I saw a bison. It was beautiful and overwhelming. The tress, lakes and the space are incredible. I really enjoyed the walk and the talk !!!

Have never been here before , big mistake on my part such a fantastic park with so much history we will be back every year .... one year later I took a nice easy drive out to the park again, so peaceful and relaxing, great walking trails and amazing scenery, if your stressed take a day trip here its unreal!!!

Awesome place for hanging out with family, friends, or dates. Dark Sky preserve and awesome star gazing. Astotin Theatre has movies about bison and interpretive talks a few times a day during the summer. The hiking is great! We did the Shoreline Trail which isn't especially exciting but super relaxing with some nice views of Astotin Lake. Be careful where you step--there is lot of bison patties about. Bring your bug spray and sunscreen!

Beautifully Maintained. I am a big fan of the park and enjoy the trails very much. I waked the Shirley Lake Trail with my life-long friend, enjoying the spectacular fall colours and the wide trails of the interior of the park. Always be careful and respectful around the wildlife, we spotted some buffalo at the campground on the shore of Oster Lake, we gave them their space and made sure they knew we were there. Give yourself plenty of time to stop and enjoy the views and wildlife you will encounter. This trail in particular is not extreme, but it is also not flat with occasional rolling hills to climb, it will take you some time to complete the circuit. It took us 3 1/2 hours at a steady pace, with some stops along the way. It is well worth the time.

Elk Island is great for camping and also witnessing Aurora Borealis if you are lucky! There’s an entrance fee, but it’s really affordable. You can also see lots of elks here (obviously!) and Astotin Lake is also great for picnics and walkings as there are trails. A lot of people also bring their kayak, canoes, bikes here, so if you are into those activities, this place is great for you!

All time favourite park as its closest to our home. Lots of things to do. And presence of staff that monitors the cleanliness of the area. Lots of portable toilet around to avoid crowding of lineups. ???? thumbs up for the effort to minimize gathering and avoid getting covid19. An ice cream truck and a korean food truck was just a plus. We only did a day trip and it was an awesome day for my 4year old. Tables are apart from each other and gives enough distance to the next neighbor. Suggest to be there early specially on weekends as you can get caught by the long lineup getting in on the entrance gate. We went early and we had a pass so we didnt have to wait. And lots of good spots for your picnic table depending on your taste. Kids can play sand by the lake , dont forget to bring your sand toys. Barbecue grills have changed its now protruding out of the ground like a mailbox not like the old big circular metal from the floor. Overall a definite awesome place for family bonding time ????.

Beautiful location just outside Edmonton, there's so much interesting wild life and terrain to explore. The water quality of the lake isn't amazing, but considering it's proximity to Edmonton, it's one of the easiest ways to enjoy an Albertan "Day at the beach". Sylvan Lake is superior if you enjoy swimming and watercraft, but if you prefer biking trails, exploration, hiking and wild life observation, this place is one of the best I know.

I've now visited the park two times this year, I live in deep south Calgary so this place has had my curiosity for a few years now but since its far away I've never really been. It is absolutely worth the 3.5hr drive saw a TON of Bison and other wildlife including two Moose in April. I've only got 3 trails left to complete and planning to do them in September and October this year!

Situated close to Edmonton, on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional gathering place, travelling route and home for many Indigenous Peoples. Elk Island National Park offices a diverse plethora of opportunities for all to explore. Any season offices an escape to nature's exploration. Wildlife can be spotted throughout the park, and one should be especially cautious during the twilight hours. Peaceful walks can be had walking the floating boardwalk while potential spotting little muskrats moving about in the water. Whether visiting for a camping trip, peaceful stroll on floating boardwalk, a float on the water, or experiencing a beautiful sunset you will be blessed with expanse natural that surrounds you.

Great picnic ground. We went there second weekend of September 2019. Weather is a little bit cold So we didn't try swimming but there are still people kayaking . It looks amusing. We also drive around the Bison loop to watch the bisons eating. Its an unforgettable experience. Bisons are roaming free!

Popular place for a nice hike and encounter wildlife. East of edmonton easy drive. The park have camping ground, day use picnic areas with fire pits, roof covered sitting areas , washrooms everywhere. The hikes are of a different difficulties and length for everyone choice. You can kayak or canoe in the big lake.

5 stars for such a nice national park! Careful though the trails are so slippery now that everything is melting, you will need shoes with spikes if youre gonna come anytime soon! And best bet is to go super early so you can beat the crowds because theres soooo many people, none wearing masks.

Amazing we walked, there are beautiful walk ways. we saw a Bison, it was just walking on the road. there is swimming area if you want. also there is canoeing (to rent is 15$ per person.) there is a theatre with taxidermy animals. so real. we had the best weekend ever. i am so going back.

Amazing experience beautiful clean place and people are very considerate. You can enjoy the beach and the huge playground, and you can enjoy the beautiful long fall trails with beautiful views perfect for hiking and photography. Spotted a herd of bison which was the cherry on top of a perfect trip. Would highly recommend this place for a family trip, perfect for children to learn and see a lot of nature.

Always enjoy coming here. Close to Edmonton with fascinating nature. Nice playgrounds and recreation areas. Boats for rent and accessible washroom. I highly recommend comming herr esprcially for kayaking or watching the sunset or gazing the stars or catching the aurora through the night.

Beautiful little nature space! Peaceful and quite. Trails were muddy in some areas but very wide, clearly marked and rather busy. Nice little camping area with free wood provided is a plus too! Saw some bison, prairie chickens, loons and geese.

Ok, if you’re planning to visit elk island you should search elk island visitor centre as the google map will lead you to the main road(highway). We arrived there past 7 in the evening. Entrance fee are self service (machine). On your way to the lakes, you’ll be seeing lots of bison and exotic birds! The best scenic spot is at the astotin lake, this was featured at visit alberta advertisement.

A lovely day trip today. People out here today seem to be aware of social distancing. So that was nice to see. There's lots of scenic trails some were closed because of algae on the lake, but there was still lots of walking to do and some secluded areas. In the last two or three years they have updated this place and done a really good job. As with any national park you need to pay to go in for the day. About $8 per adult so it's reasonable and they use the money to keep the place looking good.

Possibly the best place ever to watch the sunset! Plus it's a dark sky preserve, so if you time it right (or get lucky) and go there on a clear night, you'll see tons of stars!

Elk Island is such a quick drive from Edmonton - only 20 minutes from the east side of the city. The creatures are what bring us back again and again. There are moose, bison, beavers, pelicans, ducks and all manner of birds. I have never seen and Elk though. We kayak and have hiked a couple of the trails with many more to be seen. Summer, winter, spring and fall all have something to offer

Nice drive to Elk Island and we did see a Bison very close to the road. The weather was crazy coming home as the rain turned into huge snowflakes. Love driving around the park but a few of the roads inside the park area were closed. Great place to visit.

Only saw one buffalo and it didn't look that healthy. Saw more beaver dams than anything. Alot of algae in the water. Not good enough to even kayak in.

Loved this park! The trails are great with a nice variety of different terrain to hike. You could spend 30 mins or 5 hrs doing a hike. Park staff were all friendly and helpful when we had questions. Ample parking at each hiking start point. We spotted the Bison within 5 mins of entering the park. Bring big spray if hiking!!

There are nice trails here. Nothing too difficult. I annoyed my time spent here. Its been quite a while since I've done any hiking on the trails. But I had a good time today. The lakes are nice, it's a nice park to visit and not too far from home.

Amazing views, the playpark for the kids was a huge hit, and the washrooms by the Astotin beach were very nice and clean. For such a low cost this park is amazing and I can't wait to go back at a time when having fires in the provided fire pits is allowed, and to hike more of the many trails! This national park is a few minutes west from Edmonton. Easy to get to and drive through. When we went today, one lake road was closed. We went to Moss lake which is a moderate hike. There are free roaming bison, which is super cool just be careful you don't get too close. There is a golf course and a campground. I will have to go back to check out the golf course.

Great picnic spots. Amazing to see close up of the bison. You can capture something beautiful sunsets here too. Only disappointment was that the water at Astotin Lake smelled really bad, almost like sewage water.

Staff was super helpful when a very chill bison decided to have a nap on the trail, trapping us 15 km into the hike. We called and were given several options on how to deal with this and manage to bush whack out safely, without disturbing our friend. (see brown splotch in photo)

Beautiful place to go for a date or just to hangout with your friends and family. If you go during the week it's more likely to find bison in the highway and also more wildlife in the trails. Trail #2 is closed until further news. I went twice this month and it was still closed, maybe repairs?

Love this park. I've spent alot of time here. Great for my photography. Beautiful clean, well kept park. Beautiful scenery and trails to hike. Overall just love it, and enjoyed my quite time spend hanging with the bison. I have however witnessed some people in the park not respecting nature..getting too close to the bison, getting chased by them and they ran back to their car. Did not like seeing that at all. We need to respect these animals and view from a distance. If someone gets hurt I hope the animals aren't blamed in a situation like this. It's their home and we are just the visitors. Maybe a better eye should be kept on that, but overall enjoyed every stop at Elk Island. Hope to visit again soon!

Family drive to Elk island, is highly recommended. We took a long walk to look for animals that we ended up finding near the road. It's a must though to walk around the park and see the wild life. At one stop we saw few fireplaces that I think is a awesome idea to finish your day in the park after the walk. Unfortunately I didn't know beforehand so we had no hot cocoa or marshmallows, which had been a great way to end the walk in the forest.

We went to this place today. It is conveniently located just 40 minutes from the West Edmonton Mall. Worth the visit. They offer free admission for youth (17 and under), prices for adults are around $7, and seniors is about $6. Their pay station was finicky--but it finally accepted my card. We were told they had bison and bison they had! There's a loop where the bison graze. We saw a small heard. I'm unsure how many bison reside in the park--there is a visitors centre, I'm sure they have information like that. There are also a couple lakes within the park, we drove around but you need to hike to the lake. Overall good experience. They need to work on their pay machine. There were also no elk to be seen--dissappointed about that.

Location is fairly close to Edmonton, just right off the Yellowhead. Nice place to have a picnic or barbecue with family and friends, and it even has a beach you can go kayaking or canoeing on. Dogs are also allowed in the Park so feel free to bring your furry friends. Keep in mind there is a fee to enter National Parks again – so it's a much better idea to carpool there if you're going with friends.

Haven't fully explored the park yet, but with the peaceful and vibrant wildlife—diving beavers, wading baby ducklings, dangerous algae, prancing deer, bear sightings, the park is truly a haven both for animal lovers and animals. Many fun tours and activities the park offers during the summer and holidays. The camping grounds are really limited, which is a bummer. Gonna head for the bike trails next week, rent some boats to cruise the lake, and make some s'mores. Can be done in a day's visit. Let's go and check 'em out!

The most Amazing place. This was my playground for Winter. I've seen so many things and each time is completely different. From Bison to Moose, Deer, Elk and Coyotes. Also Wonderful sightings of the smaller critters such as Squirrels, a baby Beaver, a very cool Muskrat to a huge Mink, the array of Birdlife is also tip top. There are many, many trails to walk, each is different and catering for all walking levels. In Winter you can hire Snowshoes and in Summer you can hire a Canoe and take to the waters. It's also worth bringing your own food and making a fire, there are many facilities to do so. All in all a Photographers dream. The Sunsets here are Stunning, people also use Bison Loop for some Night Skywatching, I myself watched a Lunar Eclipse near here which was Stunning!! Bring your Telescope or join one of the many events they do for Astronomy in the Summer, where you can Camp all night and watch the Aurora dance across the Skies. If you're driving the road looking for animals I recommend going about 40kmph as it's a great speed to spy something hiding in the Trees! Also don't speed, far too many people do and it's dangerous. Go have some fun I can't recommend it enough!

Nice hiking trails and an okay lake. The day we went it had Blue Algae and beware of leeches but you can't control nature. Way less people on Wednesday I probably only saw 20 people in the park, great for social distancing. Astaton Beach is a good place to picnic and chill with friends. $8 adult admission was worth it :D

I love to visit this place often. Being a nature lover their is a lot to see and absorb. Group of bisons in Bison loop, elks, huge wetland boardwalk, largr varity of plankton and algaes, open theater, hiking, night stars seeking, camping, boating, etc. There is lot more to do with family and friends and best thing is it takes only 30 mins drive from Edmonton to go to elk island via car. If you have extra time you must visit the nearby historic Ukrainian village which is just few kilometers away from elk island national park. I will highly recommend this place if you are a nature lover.

Great place to go! Lots of wildlife, waking trails, site seeing. Our kids enjoyed it. Playground there and bathrooms with showers. Only issue is the green algae. But still a beautiful place! We got up close and personal to a Buffalo!

Elk Island is a beautiful oasis of pristine parkland wilderness - less than an hour from Edmonton. Great hiking trails and a chance to see wildlife up close and in abundance. In an hour and a half visit on a mid September evening I saw four bull elk, half a dozen whitetail deer, a bull moose and upwards of 60 bison. Also took a short walk down the beaver pond trail and saw numerous beaver and muskrat up close. Just driving through the park you're guaranteed to see bison. Other wildlife is hit and miss depending on the time of year but if you slow down and spend some time you will not be disappointed.

What a great place to get away for a day trip! Excellent bike paths and we saw BUFFALOS, lots of them!! We brought a picnic and sat by the lake to enjoy the scenery. I think a glamping trip is in our near future, I would love to see the stars at night by the lake!

A great place for hikes and getting away from the city. Be aware of the elephant sized mosquitos that swarm like locusts. Wear armour. Or bring an extra pint of blood with you if you decide to go on a longer hike. Should be called Mosquito Island.

It's a beautiful, well-maintained National Park. If you are from central Alberta this park is scenically very much like what you'd expect. Lots of aspen woods, native prairie and ponds/lakes. We saw some bison and enjoyed learning more about them, elk, and beaver in a small outdoor presentation. The playground area was the most busy. It is once again well maintained and a beautiful place for a picnic.

This national park is closest to Edmonton I believe. Its vast.The entrance fee is very reasonable. The staff here are very helpful and friendly. It's a great place for family and friends to visit . There are many activities to be enjoyed like going on the canoe, trekking, camping, barbecues, seeing the beaver dams etc. Its a very pleasant and peaceful place. It's very well maintained and clean. Its great for a day trip too. Canoes are offered on Rental basis. Most people come and barbecue, enjoy the man made beach etc. If you are lucky you can see the wild life like the Bison and Beaver . The park is close to the Ukrainian village on one side and The town of Lamont which is about 10 kilometers on the other side. It's a beautiful place to visit.

I try and go here at least once to twice a year. It's really close to Edmonton, inexpensive and there is quite a bit you can do in a day. Lots of hiking, camping, can rent a kayak or canoe, bbq, and just enjoy nature. If you're lucky you may even see a bison, or as we did a herd of close to 100. Highly recommend Elk Island especially if you want to take your family.

There are many different species of birds living in Elk Island National Park that you will not find in the city. Of course there are Bison, Beavers, Muskrats, and other notable wildlife but these animals are active and observable during the early morning or the later evening (Golden Hour) when it cools down. It is a good place to shoot (photography) Wild animals that can not be found in the city. It is also a dark night reserve (4 on the Bortle Scale) meaning it’s a great place to escape the light pollution and do Astrophotography. You can make out the faint Milky Way stretching across the night sky and thousands of stars. The living waters boardwalk is my favourite spot to shoot dragonflies, beavers, and muskrats. I always wear bells so that I do not startle and thus anger any animals by my presence. It’s my understanding that as long as you maintain a good distance from the Bison - you’ll be safe. I’ve heard most people who do get hurt by the Bison got too close trying to get that ‘selfie with a Bison’ shot. It’s all explained on the Elk Island website. Of course this is a National Park, thus no drones, not even kite flying is technically allowed. The staff are friendly and informative. There are a number of bathroom facilities but to explore the whole park - you’ll need a car. If your thinking you can just ride your bicycle - it’s a big big park. Tip - bring mosquito repellent - I always forget. There’s natural trails and paved trails to enjoy. Some easy others I assume may be quite difficult. Last night I paid $15.80 for two people, the time before I remember $15 per person. Off season perhaps? Lots of parking. You will need a whole day at least to appreciate the park.

Almost 70 Kilometres off Edmonton, there sits Avery nice, picturesque and elegant family picnic spot; a hidden gem. Huge open space near beautiful lakes, with lot of parking spaces, sitting arrangements and abundant kid activities space, the spot is one of the nicest place for family getaway, get Together and picnicking. Canoeing, Kayaking ,rowing,boating facilities are available at very reasonable prices along with life jacket and nice welcoming helping hands. A small Theater, tracking and newly installed over-the-water wood way, just make your stay a pleasure. First class Clean wash rooms, shower-after-lake water activities and dishwashing facilities are available. Once you are there, you sure will come out with a promise with yourself: “ Sure, we will be back”. Did my review help in any sense! If yes please say so????

I have seldom seen a elk at this park, but the wildlife sightings have been anything but disappointing there. I have seen big herds of bison. Plains bison on the north side of hwy 16 and wood bison on the south. I have also seen moose, deer, coyote, the occasional elk, beaver, muskrat, and many, many different birds. If birding is your thing, then definably check out Elk Island. There are some great hikes, both short and long. I have done them all. Also they can be cross-country skied or "snowshoed" in the winter. Canoeing at Lake Astotin is also great for viewing migratory birds, beaver, and the occasional moose.

Elk Island has everything to offer for any family. Hiking and canoe rentals along with nightly interperative shows about local wildlife, and dark sky preservation. Campground is smaller but is quiet and has full showers. Recent upgrades make it very easy to get around and enjoy everything. Make sure you travel the Bison loop early to see the Bison.

Best times to see Bison are around 9-11am just be careful when driving because they are everywhere. Great place for camping, hiking and having some good food with the family.

This place is great for day trips but is a tad far for what is actually there. There is a few bogs/lakes here but they are small and overrun with people. If you are looking for zen or quiet this isn’t the place for you. There is a free range bison herd loose in the park but they are really hard to locate. Overall a good spot for those who wants to see nature but don’t wNt to drive to a real national park. Not worth the entrance fee

I just visited trail five and had no time for anything else. Was definitely worth visiting. As a tourist from the U.S, this is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable places to hike. It's easy to go just casually, but you should was some shoes you don't care about and bring mosquito repellent. The entire place has great opportunities to see many different animals and wildlife, you just have to make it early in the day and keep your eyes open.

Lots of hiking trails. Some paved, but most are gravel. We’ve been on multiple of these hiking trails and would typically recommend a hat/toque/muffs if the weather is going to be 10 degrees or less...there’s a decent amount of wind across the water and can be a bit frigid. There are quite a few camping sites for tents and a few for RV. Be aware though, Buffalo can wander throughout the campground and we were woken up to one about 10 feet from our vehicle. Fall colours are stunning and we’ve taken many photos. If possible, take the little buffalo ring road because they can get so close. Also be aware that parking can become tight as groups like to take motorcycles or other vehicles for group photos. Leave early if you want to experience a quieter hike or drive!

Absolutely beautiful national park. This park has it all. Camping, day use picnicking, playground, beach, trails and bison. There is a fee for entry as it is a national park. There are washroom facilities available in several areas of the park. This is a park that is for the buffalo/bison so there is a paddock that you can dive around in and you my be able to see the bison. I definitely recommend this park to anyone who can find the time to come as you will find it very relaxing.

Went to Astotin Lake area on the weekend. The bathrooms were stocked and clean and the playground was wonderful. The roads through the park were in good shape as well. Signage makes navigating the park very simple as well. I have loved Elk Island since I was a child, and still do!

Came here on the first beautiful day of 2019 which happened to be our first time ever. We arrived and paid for our pass and the parks people were quite nice. They informed us that the wood we brought was to not be used, but did advise that there is free wood available. We went to the picnic area which was busy, but not crazy - we found a great spot, lit a fire and had some dinner. We followed some paved walking trails and really enjoyed our time - would highly recommend!

Even though it was quite cool the paths were clear of ice and slush. We were even able to walk the complete boardwalk, though there were a couple of areas with shallow pools. The ice was beginning to melt on the pond edges and the beavers' work was very noticeable. We enjoyed our couple of hours of fresh air!

I loved this place, it is so beautiful, and yes you do spot a lot of wildlife in my first visit only I stopped a big herd of bisons, and also spotted some so close to the vehicle just besides the road, did spot elks, mule deers and also coyotes, I am sure if we spent more time there would be more to add to list. There are also so many birds, you'll really enjoy watching them by them lake. The lakes are beautiful, place is very nicely maintained, you have this living water board walk which is really a nice concept. There's also dark preserve sky for star gazing and for those interested in watching Aurora or astronomy. It is so close to Edmonton, so you can reach this place really quick. You must visit this place undoubtedly.

I love Elk Island, just visited Edmonton for 6 days and went 4 days ???? As the weather was nice went for a picnic and walks around, enjoyed going kayaking on Astotin Lake. In the evening when visiting we saw so many Bison and a couple of Beavers in a two different lakes. This place is one of the most beautiful and peaceful place located just outside of all the traffic and lights of the city of Edmonton. I would recommend to go there at night if you are into star gazing because the sky here lights up with uncountable star of our Milky way galaxy. Although we are accustomed to the mountain national parks, we wanted to give Elk Island a try. We were delighted by the easy access to bison viewing and the bison did not disappoint. Trails are pretty mucky at this time of year and some are closed (it has been wet!). The campground/recreation area was a little too busy for us and it seemed like the other campers were unfamiliar with keeping a camp site clean from wildlife. The parks staff were excellent but they may need to be a little more attentive to this. Then again, there were no incidents so maybe it’s not a big deal.

This is a great place to hike and enjoy the local natural wonders of the area. EINP offers a wide variety of trails and opportunities to see elk, bison, deer, moose, and a variety of bird species - up close. But, please remember that they still are wild, and respectful distance should be adhered to. Brong you camera (and bug spray in the summer).

This is the best place near Edmonton for a quick reset. Every time I visit here I explore something new. Sunset in the austotin lake is really amazing. I love driving through bison loop every time I visit here to spot any free roaming bison. Elk island is also the best place to watch night sky attractions like aurora and meteor showers as it is a dark sky preserve.

We were lucky enough to see a young bison at the Bison loop. DO NOT go to the Beaver Pond Trailhead. That trail sucks. Surrounded by a bunch of trees and not much of a view. Only saw a small amounts of the pond.

Absolutely stunning area located east of Edmonton. A great place to get outdoors go on an easy hike and even spot some wildlife. They have a camp ground, golf course and even canoe rentals in the summer. It's nice to have an outdoor escape so close to the city.

It is truly a bueatiful park to get lost in. With the variety of flat hiking trails, the nearby lakes all around, and, during winter, the frozen waters to explore and traipse across. If you come at the right time, during the night, you can also catch glimpses of the northern lights. The only caveat is that it can become quite crowded and there may be a lot of cars that take away from the natural splendor.

Sweet Sweet Sweet! And Bring Your BUG SPRAY if you are hiking. BUG SPRAY is needed on those hikes through Wet Marsh Land, so many Mosquitos. We took a bunch of Bites for Team Human today. Also Bison, and lots of Birds. The Elk seem to be Hiding. Thank you National Government for making this a Park in 1906.

Great place to see wildlife and go for a couple good hikes. Trails are labeled with kilometres and approximate times that it takes to do each one, along with difficulty level. Nice beach and really cool museum as well as lots of events going on throughout the day. Really cool Bison Tales campfire event in the evening. Definitely recommend going if you’re in the area!!

Hidden gems near Sherwood Park. This national gives you a different taste than the famous Jasper or Banff. It is a must if you have time and in the Edmonton area. Great for a day trip or camping. Bring your pooch. They will love it.

The park is beautiful and well maintained however the staff is rude. Sorry not the staff, just the curly haired lady supervising Astotin lake area today. We have an extremely friendly dog who doesn’t wander more than 5 feet from us... apparently it was necessary to yell at us and threaten having a warden come remove us if he wasn’t tied up? Let’s focus on people littering/disturbing the peace a little more maybe and leave people who are minding their own business alone :)

You're going to see some buffalo, maybe even a wolf or three, deer, or even a black bear. Definitely worth the trip, you can canoe at Astotin, or hike around some other lakes, and even camo by them.

As per their website, this is a great place for hiking, wildlife viewing and cycling. A visit to this large park is not complete without viewing the bison. This nearly extinct animals have been preserved in this park and the most popular spot where to view them is thru the Bison Loop Road - just a 3 to 5 minutes' drive from the Visitor Center. While at Astotin Lake, we were able to hike thru the Living Waters Boardwalk - a short 30 minutes' walk from where we had our picnic lunch. Climbing thru a short wooden stairway, we were then treated to an above view of the lake (complete with 2 red lounge chairs).

I LOVE THIS PLACE. Nightime/Daytime. I love it all. Awesome place to watch northern lights or go with family and have a bbq. Lots of ammenities in Astotin lake such as bathrooms. There is an outdoor shower & lots of firepits. Bird watching or just laying in the grass and relaxing is nice aswell. Stay clear of the bison as sometimes they can be a little aggressive- trying to pet said bison is never a good idea. Ive seen everything run across the road in the years ive been going. Skunks, Porcupines,Coyotes,Deer & Elk. The Bison like to sit on the side of road aswell and can scare the daylights out of you if you arent expecting something the size of a small bus to be sitting on the road. They don't like loud motorcycles (ive found that out first hand) and they are very quick when they want to be (Never when I need to get past. Then they pretend like they are slow animals Lol) Really enjoy this place.

This is our go to place for the warm weather. The trails are always great! Lots of variety and good for kids and dogs. In the winter time you can walk out to the island on Lake Astotin and it was a great adeventure for the kids. Playground is huge and the kids like it! Just remember to bring a mask for the bathrooms.

Love visiting this park each year I am in Edmonton. One of the few places that you get to see the bisons up close. Dawn or dusk is usually the best time to see them but sometimes they may just not come out and be at other area in the park. Obviously the herd here is much smaller compared to Yellowstone but it is still a sight to see the huge beasts roaming around. Do bring bug spray or you will be eaten alive by the mosquitoes, especially if you venture out on the trails or by the lakes. One thing I have not done is to camp out there and enjoy the dark sky for stargazing.

Elk Island Park is beautiful! If you live in Edmonton it is the perfect day trip. Bike, hike, gold, swim or sightsee you won't be bored. There are a number of animals to see, a drive through the bison paddock won't disappoint. The park is equipped with number of picnic shelters, washrooms or food trucks and a restaurant.

Visited Elk Island National Park on Labour day weekend. Our visit was brief but we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Multiple trails with different lengths which are mostly easy to walk as the area is mostly flat. Numerous beautiful ponds and lakes. We only encountered two bisons near the road but will definitely go back at dusk to take some pictures and maybe encounter more wildlife.

If you want to see the bison and other animals you need to visit at dawn or dusk. The bison are not docile timid animals.. do not get out of your car and walk towards them.

Did the Tawayik Trail Hike which was beautiful. We walked through densely wooded areas and plains. Then we saw a herd of bison! It can be hard at times to know where the trail is going because it sometimes isn't well marked. Will definitely be back again!

I had a great time at this park. It’s possible to see wildlife through hikes and driving. Personally we only saw foot prints and poop on the Hayburger hike though. We went in August 2021, it was a cool rainy day. Wildlife sighting is best at dusk at dawn so we got there at 8am (sunrise was at 6am). We saw tons of bison from the car, about 7 in the first 30 min. Then in the next two hours we saw 4 more, there was a higher concentration near the bison loop which is a 5 min driving loop to view bison close to the visitor centre. The boardwalk trail near the campgrounds was also great, we saw an elk or deer across the pond. There was ample parking even on a Saturday.

We went on the weekend for an entire day, haven't seen a single animal :( we went up and down, all the lakes, park is very small, also very crowded. If you're anywhere south of Red Deer, skip this one. You're better off going to Jasper or Banff, you bump into wildlife on people's lawns lol sorry, but not worth the trip

Very nice park and beach but we couldn't enjoy that because of Covid19. Very crowded and no social distancing. People don't care neither staff. Most of the trails were close due to Covid19. Trails( number) 5,6,7,10 and 11 were open. People are not even using hand sanitizer to use washrooms. At least we saw one bison near bison loop road. I hope this review helped people plan there trip accordingly. Stay safe and healthy!

What a great place to spend a day! Brings together the wild, the beach, the hike trails and kids playgrounds altogether. Remember to take the loop road when you get there for to say hi to the bisons, not to mention keeping your distance, then hit the road to get to Astotin Lake for a barbecue setup and where kids can play at the play ground or at the field there. Hike lovers remember to checkout the lakeside trails too!

Went here the other weekend for some hiking with our baby. Couple trails were doable with a baby carrier and they also had some paved trails which were great with the stroller. Go here before 10am because this placed will get PACKED! We were leaving at around 12 having been there since 9 and it was just car after car piling in. It is outdoors so not as much of a covid concern as if it was indoors but still and massive amount of people were there.

Parked at the bottom before the gate , I've a yearly pass for the parks, so I pulled my road bike out of the box on my truck and headed on "up" as had imagined it. Ground out the kms to the "top" as I had thought of it. Took a few photos, all the while looking forward to the free ride down. Then it hit me, a full and hot wind in my face . I laughed but the ride is not just up n down. The vehicles on the road gave me plenty of space but here's a cyclist view... Go past me, don't hover, get through, give me loads of space. I drive a great big pickup too. It's all good.

Very close drive from Edmonton (about 35 minutes) and easy to spot, I was able to see Bison along the highway close to the park and inside the park. Although I did not go on any trails I still had a nice time admiring the peacefulness of the park.

I've seen meteor showers and northern lights in this pristine dark sky. 3 The hiking - easy wide trails everywhere. Perfect for all levels of hiking. Great for kids. I see lots of people biking the trails too. 4 Camping - who doesn't love camping? 5 Easy get away from Edmonton - anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to get to. Perfect for a quick visit or even a picnic. Trails are marked well. Bathrooms easy to find. Firewood ready to use. Picnic tables are plenty. And if you don't want to get out of the car you don't have to. The drive is great.

We cycled from one end of the park to the other and it was very enjoyable. Well paved roads with slight rolling hills and a generous shoulder for cyclists. Saw lots of bison up close, and a baby beaver. Good amenities for stops when needed.

Great for young families! We stayed here 2 nights for our first camping trip with our kids. It's close to the city, has new hot showers and bathrooms very close to the campground. We enjoyed hiking the Lakeview trail (4km) and watching for bugs, birds, frogs... The staff is very kind and friendly. Thanks to their knowledgable advice we were able to go to the spots where Bison. Also, there's is a nice playground and the theater. Recommend the "flying Bison" movie. The campgrounds aren't very private, being so close to each other but we didn't mind it. Elk Island is a great park even for a day visit. We recommend it and would definitely be back.

Today I visited Elk Island National Park. The Visitor Centre had informative displays and helpful employees. It helped me know where I wanted to go in the park. Bison Loop Road was as advertised: herds of bison close to the road. Great photos! I then walked the Living Waters Boardwalk at Astotin Lake. Itajes you over marshes right next to the lake. It's a short walk but peaceful. I saw different types of ducks and also egrets. Beautiful day!

Had a great experience here. Saw tons of elk some of which we got very close to while still in our vehicles as they just happen to he roadside. There are plenty of trails that are accommodating to those who want short or long hikes, and the staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. I highly suggest visiting here if you're in Alberta and enjoy seeing wildlife.

I love this place. There's always new places to explore within. Be aware of the wild life, because it aware of you. We use bells and attach them to our zippers as well as our napsacks. Even our dogs. Yes nature is beautiful but remain aware don't go around with head phones. Your not in a rural area. Pay attention to where you are. People forget just because there used to humans doesn't mean they won't react. I've been coming to this park since I was a child and thank goodness I have never been endangered by any animal. Heard, seen we have even come across many animals going off path but you just need to be alert. Your never alone in the park, ever.

Saw several Bison, the gate attendant was friendly,and a map is provided with safety tips for the animals you may encounter. There are well kept bathrooms available, and places for camp fires, and more. There are also two large gazebo (covered ) areas with picnic tables near the large lake. It was a good outing with the family.

What a great place to visit in the winter. There are so many hiking trails and places to cross country ski. If that isn't what you enjoy, there is a hill to toboggan, a shelter to build a fire and have a picnic or go for a pleasant drive.

I really enjoy going to Elk Island Park. It's such a quick drive from Edmonton, and I just love getting to see the Bison. They even have about seven resident Black Bears now! The park staff are friendly and very knowledgeable, and the park is kept super clean. I love taking my dog there, as he's not discriminated against because he's a Pit Bull (which I love). Just be mindful to keep your dog on a leash and pick up after them. They also have a strict no kites rule, after they found tons of kite string and garbage left over from people not cleaning up after kite fights (who knew?). All in all, a great place, but could use another place to eat other than the golf course clubhouse.

Awesome getaway that is so close to Edmonton! We did a day trip with our toddler and stayed at the beach. Lots of fun activities available - you can rent paddleboards, canoes, and kayaks - and great hikes in the area. Would love to book a stay at the campground in the future!

The weather was perfect, and the scenery was stunning. We saw a Fox and two Bison, and friends saw some Elk. There were ample picnic tables where we were, and they accommodated the large numbers of families. They have clean washrooms, plenty of parking and, by all accounts, some very good hiking trails. There were people sailing and canoeing on the large lake. Although we only visited one area, the park is large with other sites to visit. Would we go again, absolutely.

Great place to go both during day and night. During the day it is an excellent place to wade and BBQ. At night it makes for awesome night sight seeing since there are zero artificial lights in this area. We went during coronavirus season and there were still plenty of people here at 2am.
