We are pleased to present The Mayan Dress Code: Legacy and Continuity in Chiapas, Mexico, an exhibition combining textiles from Chiapas with photography by Cisco Dietz showcasing the artisans and Maya people, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico.
Textiles have been part of a complex communication system through different cultures. Clothing forms part of women´s regional identity in the Mayan area, where each indigenous group has a distinctive dress, colours and intricate designs that adorn the blouses, or huipiles. Dressing is a form of identification and identity among Maya women and those characteristics are distinctive between towns in the Maya region. This exhibition features textiles, both traditional and modern, and photographs of contemporary Maya people of Chiapas, Mexico. "
