When Cookie passed away after 19 years in our family, I sought to commission artwork to celebrate her life with us and littermate Chester, who is thankfully still here and acting quite young for his age. I wanted stylish, painterly realism to capture their vibrant personalities - likenesses crafted by a unique artist’s hand. Zann popped up in a search for pet portrait painters, and I loved everything I saw of her portfolio and process. From my first message to her, unsure of what would work best with the snapshots I had for reference, she was friendly, responsive, and thoroughly dedicated to honoring my beloved cats with this project. She even gave me a discount on a pair of portraits since I was buying both at once. The final images brought me to tears, and I’ve been proudly parading them around to the pet people in my life. Chester’s pose especially shows Zann’s skill for combining references - low contrast lamplit in the original snapshot and rendered with study of other photos in good natural lighting. The paintings were sent to me with a lovely thank you note and artwork calendar for the upcoming year. Thank you, Zann, for easing the pain of loss with such a beautiful reminder of the memories we will always keep fondly.
