This time I came in for an (overdue) regular eye exam but also due to some recent vision issues. I switched to Varcity when my regular place wouldn't accommodate me in a pinch when I needed some more contact lenses. They had to order them and only had sample ones in but wouldn't give me a pair while I waited days for new ones to come in. Varcity helped me out right away and were pleasant to deal with. A few weeks later I bought glasses from them as well. Very accommodating and knowledgeable....and customer service was amazing.

By far the easiest eye appointment I've ever had. Super quick and straightforward and everyone is so kind. They leave you alone to try on glasses which makes it less awkward but are nearby ready to help and check on how you're doing. The shop itself is teeny tiny but so well decorated and well lit that it makes for a very comfortable experience. Would reccomend to anybody who's looking for a new optometrist!

Update - July 23 2019 - I went in to pick up contacts I was able to order online (very convenient!) and started browsing glasses. I picked out three frames I liked and Louis was AMAZING. He helped me utilize my health spending account and gave me feedback on the frames I picked out. He checked it they had a pair I liked in a different size. I am blown away by how helpful and friendly they are and how willing they are to go above and beyond every time I stop by. Thanks again :) Everyone I dealt with at Varsity Optical was knowledgeable and helpful. Dr. Kalall was so friendly and patient (I asked A LOT of questions) and didn't make me feel rushed at all. The girls at the front helped me with my frames and even looked into ordering in the same frames in a different color. Every interaction I had with staff was positive. They have a really great team.

I got some solid advice for glasses and contacts as well as a couple different types of contact lenses to try so that I could choose between them for the most comfort etc. before making a purchase, which I really appreciated. I came in needing some prescription safety glasses ASAP. Booked an appointment online and arrived at that time, they were ready for me right away! Louie was so helpful and in the end I got a pair of safety glasses that I am over the moon about. He even phoned just to confirm he was giving me the correct colour choice (which i really appreciate!). Turnaround time was way faster than I was expecting too. I broke my glasses when I got to the hospital this morning. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't achieve a Harry Potter look. When Trevor realized I couldn't leave work, he volunteered to come to me. He drove across the city to the hospital to deliver new glasses frames and switched the lenses in the front lobby for me. I broke the glasses in the morning, emailed at 8am, and he was there by noon! Varsity Optical really went above and beyond to help me find exactly what I was looking for! I was able to book an appointment on extremely short notice (called at 6 PM on a Thursday and they were able to fit me in that same day at 8:30 PM) and the staff were so helpful and friendly the whole way through! Once it came time to pick some new frames, I just wasn't finding anything that fit what I was hoping for. After giving some details on the types of frames I wanted, they were able to find me the perfect pair online and had them ordered in for me to try within a matter of days! I always find I'm never 100% satisfied with frames I choose, but the frames Varsity Optical helped me find are quite honestly the best frames I've ever owned! From first appointment to my new glasses being ready, it took less than a week. Highly, highly recommend Varsity Optical! You truly can't beat their quick service and wonderfully accommodating and helpful staff.

My visit to Varsity Optical was very refreshing. The Office was bussling with customers and staff whom were very pleasant and accommodating. I found that there was a large frame selection to chose from and the staff answered all of my questions. I met Marc Kallal for the first time, noticed he was a Apple fan, his examination was done in a timely manner and he was very pleasant to talk to. Once my exam was done, they staff was there to help me with the purchase of the frame and lenses with great tips on how to use my work benefits to help with the cost. I went back to my office to find an email with information of my visit and very kind comments from the Optometrist (Marc) of which I was presently surprised and delighted. Overall I would highly recommend Varsity Optical and will continue to do so.

I highly recommend the professionalism of eye care and the helpfulness of staff at Varsity Optical. This week I was given the most thorough eye exam I’ve ever experienced in the 40 years I’ve been wearing glasses! High quality photos, using state of the art equipment, were taken of the interior of my eyes. These were used by Dr Marc to give me an in-depth report on the condition of my eyes. As I am now over 60 years of age, I found this especially helpful. The staff were also exceptionally knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. I learnt for the first time that there are several functionally different lens qualities available to a glasses wearer and I was shown a short video demonstrating these differences. I was also informed of the different lens coatings available to protect against the wear and tear of glasses, and was alerted to a coating that protects against the harmful effects of blue light emitted by computer screens, mobile phones etc…. The broad selection of stylish glasses frames to choose from completed the exceptional service I experienced!

I was searching the internet for an optical place that handles diabetic eye exams and came across Varsity Optical. I left a message and they returned my call the next day and booked me in for 2 days later. What a wonderful "homey" feeling,; friendly greetings as soon as you enter, quick to start the exam and explaining how every machine works so there are no "puff of air" surprises. Dr.Kallal took the time to listen and explain the results of all the tests and put me at ease. Glasses were made in half an hour and I was out the door with well wishes from all the staff. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for eye care. I also receiveded a thank you email from Dr.Kallal which was unexpected and very much appreciated.

We're dealt with Varsity Optical for decades since Paul Lorieau owned it, then his nephew, both of whom died. My spouse & I recently got tested by optometrist Dr. Tiffany Lim and then both got needed new glasses. We couldn't be more pleased with the service & the willingness of all staff to consider our needs as seniors. Luis, Trevor, and a female optician (whose name I cannot recall), and others who administered certain tests were all first rate. I don't hesitate to recommend them.

Place is busy sometimes and a smaller shop so you might have to wait, but it's worth it. Stopped in to see if they had a particular frame and they didn't, but instead of letting me know they could order it in once I paid (like other stores) I got a call that same evening from Louis saying the frame was ordered and would be in in a few days for me to try. Good thing too since they ended up not being right for me! Prices are fair and reasonable (pair I bought I was quoted about $300 more at another store). Lens options are good. Low pressure environment. Precise frame adjustments where I did not feel rushed and was able to ask for perfection. Fast turnaround on order and text updates. I went to ~10 different options for stores and short of Costco's pricing (which no one can beat), Varsity was the best all around. Thanks for the great service and for not making me feel like I was prematurely aging myself for buying Silhouettes!

I thought I was doomed when I had lost my glasses and being on a weekend with COVID-19 most businesses are not open. I went online to find an optometrist and decided varsity optical just out of the blue, emailed them and they got back to me immediately saying that they would get me in as soon as possible. They were very accommodating and patient with me as I had trouble deciding on a pair of glasses even though I kept them there for a while.They were careful about keeping things sanitary, very professional, and phoned me as soon as my glasses came in. The group at Varsity optical are amazing!! We got in on short notice and were supposed to get our Enchroma glasses prior to our trip, however; the manufacturer was unable to get the glasses manufactured in time. It was important we had them for our trip as it was a special gift for our son for his Birthday at Disneyland and the staff at Varsity got the manufacturer to rush the order and deliver them to our hotel prior to our arrival. I was so impressed at how much they appreciated the importance of my son having his glasses in time. I had an eye exam with Dr Kallal and I also bought a pair of glasses from Varsity Optical. Dr Kallal and the staff were thorough in the examination (measuring depth, colour blindness, retina dryness, etc). They were also patient and willing to answer questions. Dr Kallal takes the time to find out about a person's lifestyle so that he can make relevant recommendations. He recommended blue light blocking lens, a lens useful for people who spend long hours working in front of a screen. I would definitely recommend Varsity Opticals to others.

I was noticing my eyes were getting a bit tired with my studies so I decided to find a optometrist near school (U of A). This lead me to Varsity Optical (a 5 minute walk from campus). Everybody there was super friendly and the exam was quick and painless. When it came time to actually purchase glasses I informed the employees that as a lowly student I couldn't really afford anything too extravagant. They helped me find a solution that I am very happy with! They make the whole insurance process quick and painless and will provide you with any forms you need.

Do NOT go to Varsity Optical! I made an appointment for an eye exam about a week and a half ago. Today I arrive for my appointment and they informed me that the doctor changed some days and wasn't there, the employee working said, "I guess we should have called you." I was extremely disappointed in their customer service. I then went to their Facebook page and left this review in their "reviews" section, the review was deleted and I was blocked from their page. There are so many other optometrists to go to along Whyte ave., pick one that has good customer service.

I couldn't be happier with my experience at Varsity Optical. It was super easy to book an appointment online even though I was a new patient. The staff were absolutely amazing and incredibly helpful as I spent a good half hour trying to choose my new frames. They also happened to have everything in stock so I was able to leave with my brand new glasses!! The best part of all of this is that I can actually see now! Woohoo! I bought 4 sets of prescription lenses here and I highly recommend this place to anyone requiring any optical needs. I have had the best experience spending my money at this store and that is considering I have been in Edmonton for over 20 years and have been to many different type of stores and different optical stores. Great service and truly fantastic people that are genuinely putting effort to satisfy their customers. Also they had one of the best prices for the same lenses in town. Try them, you won’t regret! I wish all other stores had similar service and staff.

I’m appalled at the 5 star rating for this place. Let’s start with the prices. One review here states prices are EXTREMELY HIGH and that person is bang on. Prices are RIDICILOUSLY high. $115 off glasses for students? Yet prescription glasses (Raybans) cost well over $350? Now the store manager/owner will say “it depends on the prescription.” Cognac and Regent optical on Whyte Ave quoted me $85 less for the exact same glasses and lenses than you did and this was their “regular price.” (Even Bijan quoted me $75 less!) Do you think we students are idiots? I hate it when people are unethical with their advertising tactics.. And while leaving the store, the staff told me to give a 5 star rating on google. Are you kidding me? Is this how you get 5 stars? Do your research fellow students! BUYERS BEWARE!! Edit: the response from the owner below is shocking. I walked in to browse and walked right out given the rediciously high prices (after the discount u apply). Is ur game plan to discredit negative reviews? And Be careful what you say about glasses and lenses because u indirectly said “there’s a possibility our products are higher quality hence price differences.” This statement is false. You DO NOT own Crizal lenses nor do u own Rayban..u are a retailer and nothing more. Retailers compete on price and service. Ur price is what I’m focusing on here while u hinted “Product quality differences.” Also, the MAP u state is a “suggested” retail price that manufacturers give - I know this because I’m a business grad. There’s no such thing as Minimum price to protect anyone..manufacturers are not in the business of protecting you, they are in the business of selling. That’s a load of BS - maybe u think we students are idiots but u truly are the idiot here. Fellow Students: shop around before you spend your tight student budget at this store..trust me when I say the extra time and effort is totally worth a better overall customer experience. Make informed decisions!
