I had squamous cell carcinoma on my left hand fore-finger knuckle removed by Dr. Young on Wednesday December 30, 2020. The size of the spot wasn't very large so I wasn't expecting a long recovery. I thought it was odd that there wasn't a pre-op consultation with the doctor so that questions could be answered, important things like: my left hand is my dominant hand, that I drive for a living and wouldn't be able to close my hand to grip the steering wheel etc. Had I known this I would have been able to better prepare for post-op surgery and inform my work that I would be taking some time off work. I wasn't due back to work until Saturday January 2, 2021. I guess I am a little naïve, when it comes to surgeries but I really thought that I would be returning to work three days after my surgery. I wasn't given any pain killers, or antibiotics from Dr. Young. He suggested Tylenol for pain as needed. Well, the Tylenol didn't work much for me. I had to go to a walk-in clinic to receive some Tylenol 3's and the doctor there said that it may have a little infection starting so he put me on a mild antibiotic. I don't mean to pile on the doctor. He seemed nice enough in the operating room, which is the first time I met him, but a sit-down consultation about what I was to expect post-surgery and maybe some information about the kind of cancer I was having removed would have been very much appreciated. My advice to anyone having surgery performed by any surgeon is to make sure you get all of your questions answered by the surgeon and make a well-informed decision before proceeding. My hand is healing well, but I don't have enough movement in it to return to work as of today, January 18, 2021. I wish the doctor and his staff well and I hope this letter is taken not as a criticism, but a learning experience.
Update: I've since changed my review from 3 stars down to 2 stars for this doctor and his office staff. I have been trying unsuccessfully to contact the office because my finger is very stiff and sore, especially in the morning. I've tried emailing the clinic and also calling them and leaving a message that I'd like to speak with the nurse and perhaps start some physiotherapy so my finger movement, (or lack thereof) doesn't get worse. As of March 8, 2021 I haven't received any return call or email. :(
