I went from -7,5 (that's quite blind, folks!) to 20/20 in the 15 minutes the procedure took. Completely painless, and the discomfort I experienced for a few hours after that was totally worth it. It's like going from blind to perfect vision overnight. If you can at all afford it, do it! You will not regret it.

As always, my scheduled visit to the eye institute was an excellent experience. From the ladies at the check in desk to Dr. Schirber I was treated quickly, but throughly, and efficiently. Dr. Schirber responded to the few questions I had and assured me that my test results were good and there is no need for concern. I just had PRK surgery 3 weeks ago, I have been very happy with the results of my surgery. I love not having to wear contacts or glasses and being able to see 20/20 already has been amazing. I would highly recommend Dr. Schirber, he did all my consultation work, getting my eyes healed from irritation, tear duct plugs being put in and the day of surgery getting a final work-up for making sure PRK was the best option for me and for all my post-op appointments thus far. Dr. Khachikian for the actual surgery, it was very quick, he talked me through the procedure and made it comfortable. Many thanks to the ilasik ladies that get you in, tests done, anxieties calmed and knowledge passed on. Also, my daughter was a patient of Dr. Nixon and had pediatric surgery with him over a year ago and the results have been amazing and she's doing SO well, we can't believe the growth we have seen in her since her surgery (jumping over objects now, cosmetically straight eyes, better depth perception, etc). She now sees Dr. Scarborough and he's been great to work with too! Thank you BHREI for you expertise and knowledge to benefit our family and many others too!

I have been using glasses since I was 13 years old and always found them to be a nuisance. I finally started wearing contacts but even those were irritating with making sure to take them out and always being cautious they wouldn’t fold/fall out during outdoor activities. Finally at 23 I got Lasik! The eye institute was amazing. They talked me through the entire process and the procedure. They offer two different packages and procedure options as well. I now wish I never heard of the black hills eye institute or met dr Khachikian. My nightmare started the morning of my cataract surgery. It took five attempts to get my iv started I was ready to quit after the second attempt and I should have walked out. At some point during the surgery I woke up and was in terrible pain it felt like they were going to pull my eye out of the socket there was someone telling me it was almost over so they knew I was awake. I have had nothing but problems with the implant. I told dr khachikian I could see the edges of the lens and have reflection off the edge plus’s halos around lights and all he tells me is that I will get use to it it’s been a year and I still have problems. If I had a choice I would take back my cataract because I had less problems with it. If I could give negative stars I would. Be leary of this place. UPDATE It took a year of searching but I found a competent surgeon in Colorado that was able to fix the incorrect and misaligned lens. Defiantly stay away from this place and dr khachikian!

When I first started coming here I thought it was the nicest place. My first couple of appointments went fine, after that each time I came it was a circus. I’ve waited on the doctor well past my appointment times every single time, ranging from 45 minutes to an hour. Then when it’s my turn I get rushed through “because I waited so long.” Then this last time no one told me that I would have to have my eyes dilated for my appointment ahead of time, so the tech calls me back in after checking me in and tells me they want to dilate my eyes. I told her I don’t have a driver and no one told me I would need one for my eyes being dilated. She proceeded to tell me that I would be ok and they would just give me some dark glasses to put on, negate that my vision would be blurry and I already have bad vision but let’s go ahead and dilate them and give you some sunglasses and you will be fine to drive around downtown rapid like normal. I guess when it’s not their vehicle or them that could get in an accident it’s not important. I loved that I was then treated like the inconvenience for not wanting to drive with dilated eyes and putting other people at risk because no one informed me that I would be needing this. It’s just funny to me that my drivers license has on it that I need glasses to drive and if I don’t have them I can get in trouble but this office tells me that I’ll be fine to drive with dilated eyes. I was also never told that I would be getting images done that required an injection of dye, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t want to brief patients on things that will be done to them so that they can prepare for it, as I also wouldn’t be able to return to work with dilated eyes given the line of work that I do. So while it might not be a big deal to the eye institute that doesn’t mean it has no effect on the patient. I won’t be back.

I am thrilled with the results of my cataract surgery. Dr Hafner was my surgeon and provided me with excellent care. I had surgery on both eyes with relaxing incisions on the left one to correct my astigmatism. My eyesight is the best it has ever been (I am 70). I was very nervous about the surgery, but Dr. Hafner and his technician, Red, answered all of my questions with patience and kindness. Everyone at the BHEI was professional and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend Dr. Hafner and the BHEI for cataract surgery and eye care. Dr. Hafner has been my opthalmologist for about 10 years.

I went to pay my bill in full (very large amount) over the phone. My insurance didn't pay anything. When I called to pay the bill in full I asked if a discount was offered. They said no. I was told that if you pay your bill in full the same day of service you would receive a 15% discount. As I was leaving my appointment I asked for a bill and she said that I would receive one by the mail. The manager of the accounts payable department who is extremely condescending told me that their financial policy was included in that huge book of paperwork that I was sent in the mail. Having to go to a specialist concerned about losing your eyesight and having difficulty reading I did not go through every sentence in the large packet that I received. I feel it appalling that I was not offered anything since they told me it was my responsibility to read all of the information in their packet. I guess I should have but again difficulty with reading and the stress about losing my site was top priority. I understand that the black hills I institute is a large operation and the fact that they wouldn't even give me 15% off I feel is very very unfair. So do yourself a favor read every line, if you're not able to have somebody read it to you. You cannot count on the common courtesy of the employees of this I institute to look out for you whatsoever. I was pleased with the doctor however the accounts payable staff is very very inconsiderate and has no sympathy whatsoever for someone who had to pay the entire bill out of their own pocket.

My eye surgeon went to the VA. Because of my eye condition it was imperative I see a new eye doc. And, because my surgeon transferred my file to the Eye Institute, I made an appointment. That was my first mistake. I waited nearly an hour to be seen. I was escorted to an exam room where I waited another quarter hour to see the eye doc. I told him in another 7 minutes I was leaving. He examined me and said no problem. I asked about my cataract the my surgeon was watching and he just shrugged his shoulders. I then asked about my PVD occurring in my left eye and, again, he acted perplexed. I was to a point wondering if I knew more than him. My right eye was a carefully watched problem so my surgeon scheduled me in for observation every six months. The Institute doc was was truly an uninterested doc. I was astounded again when I asked him if he had reviewed my extensive file sent to the Institute by my eye surgeon. He said, “No.”. I asked why he had not, and got the “deer in the headlights” reaction. If I could file some sort of state medical complaint I would do that. What a lazy, unprofessional medical person. I was appalled at his lackadaisical demeanor. And worst of all, he never addressed the surface low grade infection I had and the main reason I scheduled the initial exam. I have a Ph.D. and believe I have more education that this guy.

Dr. Schirber does a great job of explaining each option and is straight forward and honest, leaving you with no doubt you are in good hands . Dr. Khachikian makes a scary procedure into a relaxing time . He explained everything he was doing during the procedure all the way down to how it would feel so you had no surprises. My dad goes there for macular degeneration. The nurse that was giving him his pre-injection exam was horribly rude and told him he needed to hurry it up because she didn't have time to wait for his answers. Seems to be the norm every Monday.

The entire Lasik team goes the extra mile to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. Dr. Khachikian and Dr. Schirber walked me through everything from start to finish. When it comes to your eyes and vision, surgery can be a little nerve-wracking but I always had total confidence in their ability to treat me. It was such a wonderful experience and I am now seeing 20/15. The only regret I have is not doing it sooner!

I was disappointed in my experience when attending my appointment on third floor for retina issues. Front desk staff was very friendly and lobby area very clean. I completed the online check-in, to include all medical history. When I arrived, I had to complete the medical history form, which I had already done online. Then when I got taken back, I had to once again complete medical history with the technician and she was comparing to my written form with the history from my regular optometrist. Does not seem that anyone paid attention to the information I completed online. Repetitive effort was very frustrating for me. Waiting in the hallway was awkward, especially when elderly or handicapped folks came by. Not really a lot of room for them to maneuver if they had walkers, cane, wheelchair. While waiting in the room to see the doctor, I could hear the doctor and her staff having a "discussion" on the other side of the door regarding someone’s failure to properly care for a patient. Something about a shot and the patient had gone downstairs and outside before getting it. Doors and walls are paper thin... I felt dismissed by the doctor and that she didn't really have a lot of time for me or my questions. After seeing the doctor, I went for further pictures of my eyes. Besides my head being shoved and held into the machine by the man running the test, the best part was being poked in my eye multiple times. This was done when he held my head down on to the machine and tried to hold my eyelid open while the test was running. This was the final experience that says I do not want to go back there. It thrills me to know that I now I get to pay a high price for such an experience. I feel that the facility is getting old, the equipment is old, and it would appear that there is not enough room. Work environment counts a lot toward a happy staff and great service.
