REVIEWS OF Finch & Barley IN North Vancouver

What I love about this restaurant is that they are consistently delicious. The past 4 visits have resulted in tasty food, excellent service and chill vibes. 10/10 would recommend if you’re looking for a spot on the North Shore. (If you wanna try something new and tasty get the Jalapeño mustard wings)

Was there for Sunday brunch. Had the pulled lamb egg benny ???? good price, good service, good food ????

Robbert de Groot

I was here for a private function. Staff were great and so we're the appetizers. So I cannot comment on much else this time. I hope to try them out on a normal day.

Tristan Gibson

I love the vibe the finch has, the food is fantastic, great people, awesome music, easily my favorite restaurant on the north shore!! You should go there too

Ryan Ball

Finch & Barley is one of the trendiest places on the north shore for dinner. They usually have live music on Fridays and Saturdays. I've been here over 10 times for brunch and have never had a bad meal. Try either of the hashes and get a side blueberry pancake, it's worth it.

Tricia Jackson

Great local restaurant. It's tucked away in the industrial area of NV. The menu offers a selection of share plates, main course meals and salads. Check out the live music nights. I would recommend Finch & Barley as a great date night evening The venue is small so go early to secure a table. Enjoy!

Tara Barron (RoseNocturna)

Ordered the Grilled Saffron Chicken Club as takeout. It was amazing. It comes with skin-on French fries, also very tasty.

James Lamers

Came for brunch early afternoon on a Saturday and was seated immediately with a group of six. Service was very friendly and attentive, and I liked the cozy ambiance of the place. The food was great and the prices were surprisingly cheap for the portions and quality. Brunch meals were around $12. Would definitely visit again.

I love supporting local unique businesses. And Finch & Barley used to be really good. We’ve eaten here several times over the past four years and have always had a good meal and experience. Today was a much different story. The service was unfortunately terrible. The waitress seemed disinterested in serving us, and her vibe came off as inconvenienced and unfriendly. She would rather lean on the bar and talk with her friend then serve her customers. My benedict came with hard eggs on a dry english muffin and a small drizzle of hollandaise sauce. Making my breakfast dry and unenjoyable. Normally I would have sent it back, but this morning we did not have much time and it had already taken forty minutes to receive our meals in the first place. The only reason I am giving two stars is because my son’s eggs were cooked perfectly. Maybe the restaurant is under different management than previously, because this is not the same place we’d become accustomed to eating at. Especially with their menu prices being at a premium level. I will not be back.

Went here for food and drinks: BEYOND AMAZED. Both of the bartenders were HOT and knowledgeable. The blonde one especially. The one that looks like Harry Potter with the weird glasses is also hot in like a nerdy way. The food and drinks are SO good and the service is even better.

jamie lee

Adorable little restaurant with some really interesting breakfast ideas. Their breakfast taquitos are a must have! They open at 11 and you better be there shortly after or have a reservation. Food offers vegetarian and vegan friendly options so there's something for everyone.

Matt

Food was great but the service felt a bit weird. Maybe just a bad day.

Sam McDonald

Food is incredible (taquitos!!), service is so friendly and I love the decor! So interesting.. definitely would recommend this place, It’s a hidden gem

Scott Mortell

Great atmosphere and friendly staff. I was very impressed by the amount of vegetarian options while not leaving out delicious plates for carnivores. My meal was amazing and even though we had a large group all of our food came out quickly. Will definitely be returning to try out some of the other things on the menu that looked interesting.

Zahid Dossa

Great food, amazing service, awesome ambience!

Had quite an upsetting trip here. Not sure how it's rated this highly. 5 of us went in last night. It was super busy. But we waited in line for 15 mins before being greeted by anyone. Finally after going inside, we were led inside by our server (turns out she was the only one serving and bussing 8 tables) we were given water and menus and just left alone for 40 mins without so much as a smile before we got up and left. We made eye contact with the server and smiled at her hoping she would take notice, but each time she met our eyes she would just ignore us. Not sure what was going on or if she was instructed to slow down orders because it was too busy but eitherway, would have appreciated being told that they would need 20 mins or whatever before they could take our order. But no, not so much as a check in once we sat down. Eventually we got up and walked down the street to the Gull bar and kitchen and OMG the best server, so happy and cheerful and attentive. Had the best meal and some really nice drinks. So my opinion, unless you're already drunk enough not to notice terrible service don't go here. I really was not expecting that given the ratings. Not the servers fault, the place was evidently understaffed, however she didn't have the courtesy to let us know that we would have to wait 40+ mins to order food OR EVEN DRINKS!! UPDATE: As you can tell from the management's response to my review, they have the audacity and gumption to suggest that my review is a troll attempt to "tarnish their great service record" it's evident the issue with the establishment is bad management who don't know how to schedule people to work or handle the business. The sheer ego to suggest that a genuine review is a troll. They offered me some wine or soemthing like that for when I return which would imply that after the pathetic service (forgivable) but even worse the response from management (unforgivable) to my review, that the restaurant values its customers. They only value their "great service record" and I feel like they just hope to get a changed rating as opposed to actually fixing the issue which is evidently the management.

Not sure what happened, but this used to be a great place. Went in today for brunch, and the bartender was doing more service to tables than the actual server. The lady who was to be our server spend 20mins talking to her friends that were seated and ignored all the other tables. She didn't even great the folks that came in for a table. I had to flag down the bartender to ask for my bill. We were debating if we should have walked out. If the server doesn't care/want our business then why stay? Food was good, and coffee was ok. Creamer though had ice chunks in it. I would not recommend coming here until they fix the issues with the lack of customer service.

Daniel Ayoub

Server was friendly, but service was slow. Beer was flat and warm but they replaced it thankfully. Food was definitely way overpriced. Overall not a bad experience but the prices are too high for the quality

Alihan Gultan

Ambiance is nice. The fries were burnt. Burgers and dips we're good. Decent/small beer selection.

Dale Wentland

The wings are crazy good. Get the mustard jalapeño ones and send me some as a thank you. Also their pasta is always top notch!

Pierre Drego

Short: Didn't get our food/drinks, ignored by waiter, wasted an hour waiting. Was with a group and waited ~15 minutes to get a seat, then was served water and we tried waving down the server for ~30 minutes, after making eye contact but after blatantly getting ignored we decided to leave after 40 minutes. It was busy, but the fact that they bussed down 3 tables and couldn't even be bothered to get us our drinks was disappointing.

Boris Maganic

Finch is probably the most unique and stylish restaurant on the North Shore. The owners are super friendly and outgoing, and you feel well a welcomed vibe instantly. The food is great too! Eastern flavours.

Adam Farrell

The food and service were good, however, the music was so loud my ears as still ringing after 2 days. I had to leave my group of friends as the music made it impossible to have a conversation and my ears & head hurt. You literally could not think clearly. The music was so unnecessarily loud. I will not go back to this establishment due to the excessive volume.

Sarah-Anne

By far my favourite restaurant on the North Shore. I have been going here for years and have had so many great brunches and dinners. And now they have a PATIO?!?!?! So Exciting! The food is out of this world good, my favourites are the Hummus, Moussaka & Fig/fennel flat bread. Oh and for dessert the churros or chocolate ganache please. Also, if you are gluten free, they hand make their gluten free dough in house and it's the best gluten free dough I have ever had! The staff have so inclusive and welcoming, I have had many great chats with them. Can't wait to dine here again when I get the chance.

North Shore Eater

The vibe here is excellent and definitely a bit energetic. The pulled lamb tacos are the best I have ever had. Will go back for those again. Yummy.

Nathaniel D'Souza

Service was incredibly slow, literally took 40 minutes for the server to take our order, and over an hour for the food to come. The poutine was not much better than fast food, and the fxb bowl was just shredded veggies and a sad ball of quinoa with a string of hummus on top. Very overpriced. At least the cocktail was ok.

Jazmine Smith

Great food and decent prices. Every time we have come here the service has be so great along. Very friendly and great service. Will recommend this place. Made myself and my friends feel welcome. Loved that. The manager/ owner is great!!! Loves that she cares about her customers. Ill always respect that!!!! 5 stars all the way and great music, and djs on the weekend :)

Cassie G

Love this place! Great ambiance. The lamb poutine is on of the best things I've ever had. The cocktails are unique and delicious! Overall 10/10!! Also I love it when Handsome Tiger is djing, just creates the perfect vibe. If you have not been, go now! You will not regret it =)

Anne-Marie Cartier

Four of us went there for appies and wine and the service was terrible. The waiter seemed to be more interested in a table of what seemed to be a table of his friends..We ordered our wine and it took forever and by the time the food came the order was wrong...We were hungry and asked if they could bring some flatbreads with dip and that didn't arrive until much later...After we finished our food we couldn't wait to get out of there and asked for the bill only to find that they added a 20% gratuity which apparently is standard if there is a small group...we refused to leave a tip and assured them that we would never return to their noisy and unprofessional establishment....Fail!!! ....I wouldn't even give it a star but you can't post unless you rate it!

Charlotte B

Love this place! They have great deals on wings on Wednesday and the mustard and jalapeño are my absolute favourite. The flatbreads are on a deal on Sundays, and every flavour is delicious! I will always return :) EDIT: I have to say I adore their burgers! I always go on a Tuesday for a quick burger that is delicious but doesn't break my calorie limit! :D

Camille Obianyor

Ambiance, food, drinks, service, everything was amazing. The menu is true and tasty, flavors are well balanced. Warm and convivial atmosphere. Strongly recommend.

Paula Rosenthal

Wow!!! I'm impressed with the high quality food and awesome ambiance, fantastic service! I hope the animals on the walls aren't real taxidermy though - and if yes, at least sourced from an ethical taxidermist ????. Their French Toast truly is notorious. I'm so glad I've found my new Brunch spot ???? despite the taxidermy moral consciousness mental battle while I was chewing the food...

Arash Salamati

This one of those gems in north van. Great place for dinner and brunch. Food has somewhat of Persian influence but very unique and incredibly tasty. The live music here takes everything to another level.. if you are in north van check out this place

Jamie Hoskins

Cozy local place for drinks and a meal in the evening. Weekends have good music and fun crowd. Some nights can be super busy, others there are only a few people. When it's busy, though, it's a really good time.

Chris Johannsen

Most underrated brunch place in Vancouver. Hidden gem in Lower Lonsdale industrial area.

Errol Aguilera

An actual Hip Hop spot in North Van with good food and drinks

Brendan Humphries

Little known fact, this establishment was originally intended to be named "Grinch and Barley" after the iconic lovable anti-hero "The Grinch", but the ensuing legal battle forced a name change. Regardless, the beauty and character of everyone's favorite redemption story lives on. Long live the Grinch! Grinch and Barley!

The Plant-Based Yogini

Attentive and friendly service. Good grub and great drinks! Recommend the spicy mango margarita and crispy cauliflower and the guacamole was on point! ????

Elisa Kazan

Amazing brunch! Great patio and friendly staff. Loved the eggs benny

Y H

We visited this restaurant/bar at 5pm on a weekday night. The restaurant opened on time, and have a wonderful and stunning selection of happy hour menu.

G Wllm Woods

Great place for a good cocktail. A little noisy as everyone is talking above the DJ spinning their tunes. However, worth the visit especially if having their cauliflower bites appy.

V K

We tried this place for the first time recently and really enjoyed it! The atmosphere is cozy and inviting with nice lighting and comfy surroundings. The food was delicious, they have a lot of lamb options - which we loved. I had an apple cocktail, which was also delicious! The service was the right amount of friendly and attentive but not too intrusive. We'll definitely be back for regular dates nights.

Gary Logan

Standard fare for brunch. Friendly service.

reza naghibi

My favourite spot on the shore for dinner and brunch. Brunch fav: breakfast taquitos with signature Caesar; evenings: DJs spinning fire tunes, fish tacos, warm eggplant dip, pear brie flat bread and last but def not least, the cilantro walnut pesto tenderloin. Five star service too.

Ro Sarah

Absolutely love this restaurant. Always great food, music and service. Tastefully decorated and an incredibly layered and complex menu. Highly recommend this gem!

Carly Marciniak

I ordered gin and tonic for happy hour and got brought a gin and soda. I chose to just drink it because it still tasted fine. I ordered the coconut curry, I was a little disappointed that the rice wasn't gluten friendly, but they offer chopped veggies to dip. I wish I had thought to ask them to sub the rice for chickpeas after, but the curry sauce was fantastic and I felt full afterwards. Washrooms were very clean and we really enjoyed the patio space. I would dine there again for sure.

Josh S

Great atmosphere and ever better food/drinks

Keya Hesketh

I really enjoyed my experience here. It has a sleek modern feel to it and has a lively upbeat atmosphere. Great food, great cocktails and wonderful service from the moment we walked in. It is a little pricey, so I wont be visiting frequently, however it's worth every penny.

Michael L

Been there twice. Food has always been good. Last time we were there the service was not good. Sat with an empty drink for quite some time. Also, they cram way too many people in there. No rush to go back.

Jeremy.Decker

If your looking for a hidden gem in North Van, that is mostly quiet and a nice place to grab a bite, Finch is the place to go. They have a great scene with a surprisingly decent amount of beers on draft/bottles. The wait staff is some of the best I have ever seen. It is a small place, however the 2 ladies in charge of my section, never seemed to stop moving. Even if they did not have something to run, or an order to take, they were constantly checking on us (from afar, not interrupting us). If we ever needed something, they were right there to help. Their food was awesome, Lamb poutine was my favorite and I would recommend this place to anyone.

Yasha Rassi

We decided to find a quiet place to have a conversation and enjoy a small plate to share. We had no idea what we ware in for. Our waitress was absolutely awesome personable and so fun, the pulled lamb poutine was the best poutine I have ever had. The gravy has a slight citrus taste that just hit your pallet with all kinds of colourful flavours. If you decide to visit this little Gem you might just run into us, because in the immortal words of the terminator. I’ll be back

Cole Paterson

I had a disappointing experience at Finch and Barley. The food was very slow to be brought out, and when it was, my feature pasta was underwhelming. It was overwhelmingly acidic in taste, with no subtlety detectable or really any other flavour. Additionally, there was an automatic 18% gratuity applied as we were a party of 8, which was not mentioned by the serving staff before the bill came.

Sandy Marquez

First time in and YOU have to go! It’s the cutest little spot with amazing food. The service we received was so amazing Rudi was Exceptional!!! She accommodated all my wishes, also and we will definitely be back again. They made us feel welcomed and gave us an amazing experience.

Penny Dombowsky

I like the unique decor. The food is good, but can be pricy. They have a burger special one day that makes it more affordable and their cauliflower is usually a great share plate

Aziz Mohamed

Great place to make this your local home joint. It's a little small for the amount of people I see there. They're just planning to expand into the vacated place next door. Very friendly people, the food was great and always something refreshing on tap. Weekends there's live performance by local groups who are pretty good. it's one of those places I found very comfortable and plan to go again.

Tom K

Nice quiet restaurant with a range of options. Went there 3 months ago and had falafel. Wasn't sure what theme they were going for with design and decorations but food was great and servers were pleasant. Would go back. They have some pretty good Greek food as well.

Justin Ostensen

Reviewing as a brunch place (never been there at night when it's a bar). Breakfast foods are simple and delicious, environment is pleasant and the wait staff are pretty solid.

Cate Curry

Really good local restaurant. Fun decor, great staff and the food is great.

Daniel Silver

I really enjoyed the Crispy Cauliflower and Sundried Tomato Hummus appetizers with the first being a pretty unique dish which should definitely be tried. The Finch & Barley Burger was good and I highly recommend getting the yam fries with them as they are excellent. I wouldn't recommend the Grilled Halloumi Sandwich or Pear Brie flatbread as these were out least favorite dishes. Overall a good spot with friendly service despite a few hiccups.

Lei Agnew

We went on a whim and will be back. Four of us shared the hummus, gulf tacos, saffron chicken salad, fig fennel flatbread and grilled halloumi sandwich. They were all pretty solidly done. Tacos were a bit bland and the salad greens a little unimaginative but the chicken was well cooked and super-juicy. There are only a few desserts and the feature bread pudding that we shared, was lacking in detail (if we'd known about the cream cheese icing, we might not have ordered it) and not as good as we hoped. Drinks and cocktails are well-priced and pretty creative. I really liked my virgin pear and ginger mojito. Service was a bit of a disappointment - apparently there are no service trays so our server could only carry two glasses of water (or whatever) at a time. it looked like she was in over her head. But the food and drink were good enough for us to give it another try.

James Lawson

The service was excellent despite the kitchen being a little slow (we were there early on a Friday, the place was only half full when we arrived, and the kitchen was already backed up). The warm eggplant dip was superb. Unfortunately, the artichoke and bean dip was uninspiring (and the artichoke very difficult to detect) and the crispy cauliflower too deep fried (the cauliflower at Nuba is way better). Also (perhaps I'm showing my age) it is incredibly loud here, making conversation something of a challenge.

Julien Lefebvre

Absolutely worth every penny ! 100% recommend

Darlene M. Kurtz

Fantastic restaurant! A gorgeous little find in the heart of North Vancouver's industrial neighbourhood. Feast on delictable appis while an Uptown Funk plays in the background. A unique and inventive menu awaits to tantalize a wide variety of palettes. Wait staff are friendly, knowledgeable and breeze easily through the throngs of happy patrons with ease. I higly recommend this gem!!

Darrin Moench

Great hidden gem. Food was top notch. We only had a pizza and some appy's seeing as we stumbled in for a nightcap, interesting atmosphere though. I would highly recommend it for dinner or as a place to hide away and drown your sorrows. Contemporary, clean, with great food and drinks. Didn't get much time to go through everything but it all looked great. Could easily be a 5 star joint. I just haven't had enough off their menu yet to say its the be all and end all. But it most likely is...

John G

Overall we liked the experience, best waitress I had in a long time, prices are a bit high. I'm currently doing a low carb diet and it's not easy eating out. As soon a mentioned that none of that items in the menu would work for me, the waitress just asked me to tell her what I'd like in a salad and they made it as I asked which was great and it tasted good. My friend had that vegetarian mousaka it was good, but small for the price and comes without any side. Anyways best waitress! Thank you!

Amanda K

Came here for dinner service and our orders were confused with another table so we had one person get their burger way earlier while the rest of us sat there waiting. Then by the time our food came, the one person's order was cold by now for us to all eat together. No real explanation or compensation was provided for this confusing service unless we asked them multiple times what was going on. Music is also super loud when they have a "live band" which happened to be a dj playing music that was for a club that night. Wasn't really able to hear the person next to me without shouting so my voice was gone by the end of the night. Food and drinks were alright when it was brought out appropriately and they have huge indoor plants which was cool.

Ann L (Faye)

Great hidden restaurant and bar. Relaxed atmosphere, nice seating, great drinks and easy to share tasty food. Service was efficient and laid back. You really feel like a local. Happened to go on a Sunday when they have $10 flatbreads. Unfortunately they were out of chocolate ganache. Got the mint creme brulee instead which sadly isn't a great flavour in my opinion. Please change to classic vanilla or maybe a fruit flavour.

Kerry H.

The standout of the evening was the cocktail offerings: original recipes and fairly priced. I can't speak to the beer or wine menu, but the drinks were a great way to start the night. The cauliflower appetizer was our fav. In fact, all the food was top notch and not your typical pub fare. Delighted to discover this place on the North Shore. Our one hmmmm....the accoustics are a bit hard. If the restaurant were to place a few hanging pieces of decorative art / fabric on the wall, it would go a ways to making it easier to hear my guest across the table (and I'm not a senior).

Julia

No exaggeration, the cauliflower here is the best I've ever had. Cocktails are super good and all the other food was fresh and delicious

Lori Moyes

Fabulous food. Great appies just a little different from all the reat

mat thomas

The staff was rude and uaccomodating. We ordered drinks and never got them after 40 mins. It was not busy at all.

V. Beamish

The food and service were fine.....however. The patron at the next table (albeit outdoor) was changing her baby's diaper on the dining table just a few feet away. Totally inappropriate and unappetizing. I am not certain why the staff did not suggest she use the washroom. What other cleanliness issues are overlooked?

Jon Scott

Been coming here for years. Being a "hole in the wall" it has a relaxed atmosphere, great food and awesome staff. The music has tons of variety and the food is well priced. Highly recommend this place for a low key dinner with class or just a place to grab brunch after a night of drinking.

Jono Austin

I had the Tuesday special, which is a burger for 10 bucks.....I infact had three of them. The burgers are a great value, and for most people much like Tylenol one is often enough. On regular days the burger is a bit pricey at 16.50 but does include fries on those days. So if your in the neighborhood and looking for a nice place to check out with some interesting artwork, and Buffalo's head adorning the wall give it a try.

Taylor Grehan

Great food, great people! I go as often as I can!

Jenny Jewer

Incredible food, incredible vibe, incredible service. Highly recommend the crispy cauliflower and the lamb. You won’t be disappointed, this place is a gem!

Janelle Drego

Don't waste your time or money on this poorly run bar. I went to F&B after the Shipyards Festival. The waitress seemed friendly when she dropped off water. But then she didn't come back. I tried to get her attention numerous times but she kept looking away, and this happened for 40 mins. I could see the restaurant was busy, but its ridiculous that you don't bother to check in on a table for over 40 mins. I don't know if they were simply overwhelmed with orders, but its unacceptable that you do not communicate with hungry customers, who expect food and drinks from a restaurant. I looked back after we got up and left, and seen her walk over to the table confused. I dont get what's surprising when you don't follow up with customers for 40 mins after they are seated. We left and walked down to The Gull and were so pleasantly surprised by a server and staff who were attentive and cared to take our orders, and deliver great food and drinks.

Joel Barrett

I recently had my company Christmas party at Finch and Barley. The food was excellent! We had one server for roughly 16 people and she nailed everything. Best service I've had in a long time, if not ever! The music, lighting and atmosphere; paired with the food, service and fabulous coctails made for our best Christmas Party to date! We'll be back, thanks!

Shandel Hibberd

Very customer oriented. Service and food/drinks were great! Open later than the breweries.. pandemic thing I guess....

sqeeze88

Best place for Middle Eastern fusion, whether it’s tacos, flatbreads, or classics. All can be found in this amazing establishment.
