Love the energy, If your into Latin dancing and want to have a great time this is the place to go. Love their Drag Queen show, the theme is always different, they have great energy and look like they are truly enjoying their time on the stage. Some times it can get a bit to crowded and It takes a while to get a drink because the bar is always crowded, they need to hire more staff to work in the bar area. Unfortunately there is always some sort of drama or fight going on...

I came here for my birthday and at the end of the night, when I was soon heading out, my friend was alittle nauseous so I was waiting for her in the bathroom. All of a sudden, two security guys barge in and force open her stall door and one goes over from the top of the stall(keep in mind my friend is a sweet small girl and was making no fuss what so ever) and they picked her up and forcefully dragged her out to the street. She was covered in bruises and scratches from how he handled her. She was so sore and humiliated and she wasnt causing any trouble what so ever. We were having such a great time but that behaviour was disgusting and traumatizing for her. I will not be coming back and will advise others not to as well. Again, she did not pick a fight, nor mouth anyone off. She was in the bathroom stall not bothering anyone. Completely disgusted with the security there. They are definitely on some form of power trip.

Not what it used to be. I love, love, LOVED Rico's a few years ago and frequented the venue often. The drag shows were and still are, fun and exciting. However, there are now male dancers that seem are only there to dry hump any willing and paying female customers. Amusing at first, the dry hump shows became quite vulgar and took away from our opportunity to dance. The crowd is still awesome and the energy great, but the tasteless group lap dance, will likely keep me from returning.

The bright and teasing colour pink will greet you as you take the stairs down to the floor of absolute fun and just fun????. There’s a place to deposit coats or bags after the stairs. Very busy on a weekend night so if you’ll come here for the show,better be near by the centre for an A+ view. The performer “Black Magic” was professional and respectful,the drags were beautiful and uniquely talented. If you wanted to touch,you better have cash???????????? and what happens in El Convento Rico, stays in El Convento Rico.

A pretty good club in toronto. Friday nights they have some dance classes followed by opening the dance floor. It is a big place with nice music. As expected on Saturday can get really busy so you may wait in line outside and if you need to checking your cloths it may take some extra time and money. The drinks are a bit pricy but is a nice place for sure.

Honestly this was a lot better than I expected after doing my own research about this place online. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the performances were to die for! Drinks are a bit pricey but good DJ who played a mix of Latin music and popular pop songs. Highly recommend bringing a small group of people and having a friends night out!

It is definitely catered for bachelorettes or birthday parties. If you're looking for a real drag show go to Crews & Tango. If you want 80s music with a sampling of drag El convento is for you

AVOID AVOID AVOID TRUST ME!! When we arrive around midnight there was barely anyone there and no one dancing, just a very cheesy dance competition on the dancefloor. The bartender was extremely rude and actually made fun of my friend for no reason rolling her eyes and talking about her to another customer right in front of me! My friend was just swaying to the music a little and waiting to buy a drink. Never had that treatment before! RUINED OUR NIGHT! Also the club was mostly filled with seedy older men. After paying cover was keen to leave! Overall the place seemed a bit outdated.

Last time we went we were surprised by the amount of crazy going on. Apparently Friday is more Latin music. The bar tender was amazing. The show is extra. We left on the early side as the music was 70s/80s and we were not into it.

Great staff, music anf atmosphere. The Friday night latin dance classes are a blast and super fun if you're looking for somewhere to dance. Table service is good but at the bar not so much, they only take cash at the bar but debit via table service, which I find fundamentally strange.

It was such a fun experience. Clubbing can get pretty repetitive, but El Convento Rico was able to add things to make the experience more enjoyable ... We went on a Friday night and got to participate in a “dance class”, which was then followed by a dance contest, and then later around midnight, a drag show. It was so much fun. And we had a lot of laughs. The interactive nature of it all makes El Convento Rico a standout in MY eyes. I would highly recommend. Especially if you love Latin music!

Such a fun time! I actually enjoyed the spanish dance lessons beforehand, the music was poppin' (A good mix of Latin/Top 40.... even then all the latin music was recognizable, like Pitbull/Shakira etc...) The drag queens were a welcome addition too, as it changed the pacing/vibe of the night and gave us a good break from dancing. Ill definitely go again!

Had a great time the last time I actually got into the club which is why I wanted to go again but last night i stood in the rain for over an hour. Would have been nice to know if they had reached capacity or something so that I could have gone somewhere to dry off. Bouncers and club obviously have no consideration for the people looking to have a good time just leaving them out in the rain. Kept letting crazy amounts of girls in from a separate line. I was a few feet from the door when they stopped letting people in for over 20 minutes that's when I got fed up and left.

Your life of clubbing isn't fulfilled until you go to EL CONVENTO RICO. I absolutely would 100% refer my friends to host there bday parties, bachlorette parties, or any type of gathering to try Rico's. I have been coming to this club for over 3 years now, and I want to emphasize one thing, "to have a great time, ITS ONLY AT EL CONVENTO RICO'S"... I am not a employee of the club writing this review, I'm just like you looking for the next place to let loose and have a great time. Last year around this time El Convento Rico celebrated there 20yrs of establishment and while waiting in line, myself and my two best friends met a group of italian ladies who pondered and questions why is this place so busy with a huge line-up. I couldn't help but to inform them that there lives wouldn't be the same until they tried it out. One year later we have been more then a dozen times with these same ladies and will be attending Rico's 21st anniversary because there JUST AMAZING. Great staff, great entertainment, great service what can go wrong. El Convento Rico is #1 in my books, so come on out and try it out for yourselves.

It is really fun and everything the first time I went, but the second time we had to wait 2 hours in the cold to get in, and by the time we were at the front of the line it was 1:30 and there was no point. I know it's not really their fault because they DO have capacity, but they should send people away if they're not gonna get in at a reasonable hour.

I had the best time here for my birthday. The best music EVER and so entertaining. There was a dance contest and a great drag show. Bottle service was great and our waiter was attentive. They even gave us free poutine at the end of the night. I absolutely recommend you coming here to celebrate. It's seriously the best time ever. My best friend is getting married in the week, so we decided to do a night on the town for her. I asked her to pick a place she thought would be fun to go dancing. Unfortunately she picked this place. I've been to El Convento Rico before. Experience's have always been okay in the past. But last night was a disaster. We got there at 10:45 PM. As soon as we got there we noticed the staff aggressive and mean. There were two people paying at the door a $15 cover charge, we stayed behind them and the bouncers quickly shoved us into a waiting line where there was literally no one waiting. He kept us there for 10 minutes, and then allowed us to proceed to pay for our cover charges to go in. I thought that was really weird for starters, considering there was no one in line in front of us and behind us. We were the only ones there being held back. I figured they did this because the club was full downstairs. This place is in a basement. After paying $45 for the three of us to go in I get to the bottom of stairs and there're less than 20 people in the club. Right off the bat that started off as a warm welcome. Then we made our way to the bar where we find out everything is cash, my friends have no money on them they only had credit cards and debit cards. So I covered the first round of drinks. The bartender was cocky and unkind. I figured a $4 tip on $11 would soften him up a bit, But it didn't, not even a smile or thank you. Then the place got loaded up, stuffy as hell. The ratio of Spanish music to English music at one point was more than 2/3. I went to the DJ and requested a song, he rolled his eyes like I was bothering him said he would play it and for the next hour And a half nothing happened no song. After dancing for an hour and half it got so stuffy in that small overcrowded basement I could barely breathe. I needed some fresh air. So my friends and I decided to go outside for a breath of air. God for bid you're smoker and want a smoke break. I'm not, and neither of my 2 friends. We get outside we take a five minute breather. Only to find out that we have to get into a re-line to get back in. The line for people with stamps to reenter on their hands was enormous. I counted over 40 people waiting to get back in, on the other side of the door, they had the people waiting to buy tickets to get in. The bouncers let 10 of those in to collect there $15, then would allow two to reenter on our side. After waiting 45 minutes, missing the drag queen show that we originally came for we gave up and left the club. We were nowhere near entry after 45 minutes of waiting. They held us there like cattle. Not one staff member was polite. What a waste of $45 and a night. It really ruined it for my friend. She really had her heart set on watching the show. Toronto is full of amazing clubs I wish we had picked another one. I would suggest staying away from this place. There're so many nice clubs in Toronto. With really nice classy stuff. This one is definitely the lower end. They're only there to take your money they don't care if you have a good time. I've been to this place at least a half a dozen times. Experiences in The past have always been mediocre. This experience is the one that has made me decide to never go back there again. I will tell all my friends the same

Imagine being homophobic in 2018? This club claims to welcome all sexualities but one of their strippers refused to dance with me resulting in complete embarrassment. Oh and they have a drag show. So fine to appropriate our culture but not fine to accommodate it. Sounds about right.

I've never had a bad time going to Rico on the weekends but what happened this past Saturday put me in awe. I was dancing with a couple friends when I noticed in the corner of my eye a very incoherent woman dancing with an older man. Things didn't seem quite right because she was somewhat limp, going with his body movements and it looked like she was trying to hold herself up but push him away at the same time. I decided to cut in when I saw the man pull down her shirt and put his hands up her skirt. Long story short, she didn't know who the man was and she didn't want to dance with him. My friend pushed him away from us when he didn't listen to me to back off and we got kicked out by security because the man was a regular at the venue. Small bright side was that security let me help her find her friends. TLDR; my friends and I got escorted out because an old man who was a regular got pushed for being sexually aggressive with a drunk woman.

This bar is known to be a safe space for all individuals/genders/sexualities. I am so pleased that venues like this exist in Toronto. However, in order for venues like this to work, the door staff (all staff) should be welcoming and avoid using homophobic slurs. My last visit to the bar was frightening and was something I never expected and never encountered in the many months that I have been going here. The doorman with the question mark tattoo (white male, lanky, backstreet boys haircut) pushed me and told me to get out of the bar after calling me a f@g. As a result, I broke my expensive heels. This is no way to treat a lady, or any person for that matter. It is moments like this that make my transition a more difficult process. He should not be working in this establishment.

Like the other reviews mentioned, this place is diverse which was pretty cool. Dance music was great all night. Lots of bachelorettes going on aside from the one I was with. Was a little slow though. Got off a party bus and all the girls had to pee like crazy, some wete smart and went across the street. The rest of us waited in the guestlist line only to be waiting for an empty bar haha. We waited for the staff to find our booth, and then we waited over half hour for our bottle service even after asking.. But the bride had fun night in the end!

Was just there last night. One of the dancers, an African American one was great but there was a heavier less attractive one who was wearing a blue top and a belt with sparkle on the front that was VERY rude when my friend was dancing with her. She just stood there and didn’t even put any effort into making it a fun experience. After about ten seconds she said “the song is over.” We were unimpressed and not going back.

If you are looking for a gay/lesbian dance club, DO NOT GO HERE. This place is full of creepy straight guys, and the staff and bouncers are extremely rude. This place might be okay, if you are going out for a bachelorette party, if you want to be one out of twenty other brides there.

Great venue, with good music and a show. However, I am slightly disappointed with the security. This is supposed to be a positive safe space for all in our community. It is counter intuitive that the door man would use homophobic language towards the customers. Please be careful with the words boys. xoxo

We go for the dancing but ....they pick certain people to do the dance lessons then ask if anyone wants to join in....so u are left in the back and feels like just leaving

A group of 18 of us went this past Friday and WOW!!! What a FABULOUS evening!!! I did have a few drinks so here’s hoping I remember the names lol... Our server Stephanie was just as awesome as she was beautiful!! Vanessa at the entrance is just the sweetest thing! Aaron, Iman, Jason and J.C. were all fantastic and super nice. Definitely will be coming back again!! Thanks all for a night to remember!!!

Evertime I go to Convento, I have so much fun. As a Latina I love the music they play and their show. I just wanted to say that Malik (sorry if I am spelling your name incorrectly), one of their staff members, actually made my night yesterday. I was dancing with my boyfriend and my best friend and this drunk guy legit pulled my hair HARD.... In times like this, I girl should feel safe anywhere and if we don’t we have the duty to not let people think they can touch us in any way that makes us uncomfortable. Anyhow, I decided that this guy was not gonna get away with this. Malik was the first staff I found and I told him what had happened... First of all and most importantly, he BELIEVED ME... no questions asked. He personally went to speak to this dude and asked him to leave even though the crowd he was with started getting involved and trying to convince Malik to let him stay. Malik kicked him out and even when the dude managed to enter the club again and had the nerve to stand right next to me, Malik kicked him out a second time. Thanks for making me feel safe and that you actually care about people being respected at your club ????????

$15 cover on a Saturday night, coat check available, typical (expensive) drink prices as you would expect in any popular Toronto club, well lit (almost strobe lights effect), great music, good crowd, can fend off unwanted attention if with a larger group of friends, still mostly respectful

Fun, exciting place to party. Lots of friendly people but the crowd is definitely different from the typical people you see at king west or adelaide. Drinks are cheap (3 tequila for $18 I believe) and cover was 10. Closes late too.

My friends took me here on Sept 14, 2013 for my bachelorette party. I was 1 of 20 other brides-to-be there on the same night. It was weird to see all the veils and sashes and it all felt very common. It's hard to explain, but I think if you are planning a night for your friend, you should take her somewhere unique. The crowd of brides was a huge turn off. The reason why this place is great for stagettes is because people make a big deal about the brides. I saw some stripper guys doing really inappropriate things to some brides. I didn't want to have any of that so I stayed well away. I also missed the whole show with all the queens because there were so many people that I couldn't see. My single friends were disappointed because there wasn't a cute guy in the whole club. Overall, it was okay. Not great, but not bad. I am still happy that I went to see what all the fuss was about :)

Such a fun place to dance with friends!! There are gogo dancers and drag shows here, and a great dance floor! The bar is cash only, and the cover is pretty steep ($15 on Saturday night). In my opinion it’s worth it though.

It was my first time visiting this venue tonight and I am extremely disappointed with how long they made people wait in the cold to get in. We got there at about 10:15pm, and we were fairly close to the entrance but yet the general admission line did not move for 1 HOUR. It’s not courteous to let ppl wait in the cold for that long. Security kept letting other individuals straight in by the hand-fulls. We expressed are disappointment in the wait time to the Security when we finally got to the front but he didn’t seem to care; didn’t even apologize. The Security here are on a serious power trip. I will give this venue a 1 star for the nice staff working the coat check.

I been coming for several years on and off to ricos and few weeks ago noticed a fresh face at the door. This happens to be a new manager I was told. Compliments to management for making this decision! As we walked in for our reservation, security was being rude and he stepped in, greeted us with a smile and guided us to our server once paid... the night could not have been more perfect. PS. The other manager is often yelling to get everyone through the door like a pack of cows... understand without customers, ricos would not be the place it currently is.

Went with my girls for my bachelorette party. It was lots of fun aside for waiting 45 minutes in line. My maid of honour tried to book a table for the night and they refused to let her reserve a spot because it was a bachelorette. It was a fun place though but would of love to see some of the entertainers and danced the night away

If I based my review just on the entertainment, music and people I would definitely give this a 5/5. My issue the following night I was there was the treatment I received from one of the bartenders. I had given her a $50 for 2 beers ($13.50) and she gave me back $27. She shorted me $9.50 and when I asked her about it she gave me a blank look and tried to walk away. She kept ignoring me and when I was able to bring the issue up with her she tried telling me she gave me a $10 (except the remaining change would have been an additional $9.50??). She tried to call security on me so I just left at that point since it was not worth it. This has never happened to me in my life locally or partying abroad in bars/clubs. This was a horrible experience and I believe she did it because she was trying to take advantage of the situation aka she thought I was too drunk to notice. This wasn't so much about the actual money as it was the principle. I always tip but being short changed intentionally is not right!
