Fun enough alternative bar. The dog was the best! The waitress was pretty rude though and didn't make for the most pleasant experience. It would have been a great place to go back to if the first impression with the staff wasn't so poor.
This review is solely aimed at highlighting the wonderful service we received from "Katarina". Google maps led us to the Piranha Bar. We were just looking for a nice low-key place to day drink before we tackled our day. What an amazing little gem we found. Now I only say "little" due to the fact that it was around 2pm in the afternoon. There was more than enough space and the layout was fantastic. There's a very 80s-90s hard rock cafe-centric vibe at the Piranha Bar and it's amazing. Not only were the drinks and "Bomb Shots" amazing but Katarina was nothing short of pleasant when it came to service and communication. The vibe that came from this place along with the service has cemented a return visit from my fiance and I. If you want amazing music and amazing service go here.
Great, friendly staff! Super easy to book the venue and professional. Great place for alchohal and live music.
Dice and Sabrina were awesome hosts. Great music too.
Awesome place to see shows. Great sound, awesome staff, perfect location. Best club of it's size in Montreal
Nice we can eat figé guys in there
If you like grungy bars, you might like the Piranha Bar. It's a bit weird, with televisions carrying sports as well as lots of gambling machines around the edges. Maybe normal for Montreal, but still unexpected at a dirty, metal place. Pretty quiet at midnight on a Friday. Perhaps it picks up later?
Excellent friendly people. Great .. staff
Great staff and great music. There's a good boy named Rex that will sit with you while you drink.
It has a classy dive bar look, if that makes sense. It has a post-apocalyptic heavy metal feel. Friendly staff and surprisingly friendly customers.
Great rock and metal bar with a live muaoc space upstairs. Have been many times to see bands my friends are in and also bands i dont know; a blast either way. The main bar on ground level is basic but good. Well priced too.
Small crowded but great ambiance. I played with my band up stairs decent set up the loge was a nice touch.
Good place to have a drink and chill with friends
Great vibe for young alternative people with a great venue for live music. My band played here on tour and Rene was a great sound guy!
Not a bad place ... I go there to play the slots whenever I see pro wrestling on the tv's.
Really nice place with a great and fun atmosphere, great music and a lot of fun activities to do with your friends!
Great place to hang with friends, take some beers and see some great concerts.
Great bar, friendly and helpful staff, awesome selection of craft beers!
First visit for Warrior Soul. Great sound in the room.
Beer is pricy but you can see some nice underground metal bands there. Staff is cool.
Amazing!
Piranha Bar, Montreal In retrospect, the name “Piranha” is very telling but at the time we didn't know it was meant as a warning to unsuspecting tourists. Gentle reader, consider yourself forewarned: Do not set a foot in this place if you don’t want to be separated from your money and left with nearly nothing, faster than a piranha separates the flesh from the bone. So, this is what happened to us. My husband and I were visiting the lovely city of Montreal. It was our last night and we still had a lot of Canadian money to spend. We decided to pour it into the local economy in exchange for a few drinks poured to us. In short, we were looking for bar. We saw Piranha bar - it had a hockey game on TV and a Foosball table upfront - we thought this will do. We went in with the intent to park there until we spent our last dollar. The bar tender looked a bit ditsy, and there were only 2 outer customers at the bar, but that didn't deter us, because we were on a mission to have a good time. Wasting no time we asked for the menu and ordered drinks - my husband ordered beer; I ordered Gray Goose vodka with cranberry juice. While ordering drinks we realized the bartender didn’t speak English. That wouldn't have be strange, if we were let's say in a little village in the French Alps, but we were in downtown Montreal, at the most touristy place one could imagine. Every single person we met in Montreal was fully bilingual – random people on the street, bus drivers, construction workers, street musicians, they all spoke English and French, and some people spoke a few other languages in addition - the bartender however, NOPE!, not a word in English. English is my second language too, I had to learn it to be able to do my job, unlike the the bartender of Piranha. Anyways, the lack of language skills was not the problem. The problem was what the bartender did next. She took a glass, filled it with ice, grabbed a well gun and poured some water in the glass, then grabbed another well gun and topped it with red juice, then served it to me. Are you paying attention? Nothing, nothing came out of a bottle. I am thinking, “OK she watered down my cranberry juice, but I’ll let it slide, as long as she doesn’t water down my Gray Goose.” So, I wait, and wait, and wait. The shot doesn’t arrive. Instead, a bill is placed in front of me. I think, “Perhaps she forgot to bring me the shot. Perhaps, she didn’t understand what I had ordered.” On the bill – Vodka – Gray Goose: $10, Cranberry juice: $3,20 + the beer. She didn’t forget to charge me for the vodka! I waive to get her attention and ask: “What happened to the vodka? You forgot to give me the shot.” She points at my glass. I say, “There is no vodka in there, you were supposed to give me a shot of Gray Goose,” I tap the $10 on the bill. She shrugs. Five minutes later she brings the Security Guard. “Good,” I think “Finally somebody who speaks English.” I tell him what happened. He sticks a straw into my drink, tastes it and says: “Yes, there is vodka in there. I don’t even drink vodka, but I know there is vodka in there.” I say, ”There is no vodka, I watched her make the drink, and she didn’t pour any vodka into my glass. Plus, according to the bill, she is charging me separately for the shot and the cranberry juice. Do you see a shot glass here?” He asks her in French: “Did you put any vodka in her drink?” She nods. He points at the well gun and says: “We are not allowed to pour more than 30 ml of alcohol.” “30 ml? I didn’t get anything! Plus, Gray Goose comes out of a bottle, not a well!” “Give her a dollar back”, he told the bartender, and went to play pool. Case closed! So that’s how things are at Piranha bar, in downtown Montreal. They are very strict when it comes to paying your bill, as far as serving you drinks, that’s optional. We left in search of a better place to spend our money at.
Come to this bar every time I am in Montreal, whether I am wearing a suit or in ripped jeans. Great beers on tap, good music and interesting folks hanging around.
One of the greatest show bars in Montreal! Always a good time here, foosball, pool, that punching bag game, a cool Aerosmith pinball machine, touchtunes for your favorite songs.. And of course all the great bands that play here.
I love this bar. Wish I remembered the names of the two bartenders that were always around, treating us well (Kylie and Julie maybe? Something similar). During my two week stay in Montreal, I was probably here at least 6 times. Such a unique little bar
If you want to hear loud music by local band this is the spot. Careful really loud bring something to cover if you're sensitive.
Nice small rock bar. Friendly staff. Good music.
Meh!
Best show bar in town
Fun bar with a lively crowd (not to crowded though) when we went which was mid afternoon on a weekday. Bar tender was playing some nice metal and rock music.
Came here for a punk show upstairs on a Wednesday and it was a good time. A slow night for them I'm sure but everyone there was delightful. Bartender was joking around with us and seemed happy to have us there. The bar is cash only so make sure to hit up an atm before you head out (fees suck). Would be even better if they had more beer options but with a lil venue such as this I think they are doin pretty good!
The new barmaid is really sweet! Ambiance is great. The kareoke night was boring tho... A bit too loud as the kareoke guy was simply jumping around and singing all alone....
Great music, cooler vibe than I thought a place in such a touristy part of town would have.
A dive bar in the best sense of the the term. Socialable staff and tasty beverages. And there's metal. Can't forget the metal.
Trainwreck of service and weirdos on slot machines. Wonder how this place is still in business.
Reminded me a lot of my teenage punk years. Crappy (in a good way) beer with really nice staff. Would recommend to go see shows upstairs.
Recently renovated. Arcade, pool, baby foot, etc. A bit ghetto but great place to hang out
You only get 2 stars because of the dog. Service was terrible very rude waitress. Very dirty place. Do not recomend. Came in for food deffinatly did not eat here
Love this place, played here and chilled here countless times.
Great dive bar for the with a goth vibe. Good service at good prices and good karaoke for those not wanting large crowds
Nice little bar with friendly staff. Dark with a decent ambience.
Played shows here a lot the sound and venue is great.
Okay so I've been there so many times. Tonight I went and I got a beer the moment I entered I put 20$ i got 2 tremblay which is 10$. Bartender good for her said I didnt pay anything. And I had to pay another 10$ over the 20 I gave... it's sad I really liked this place. Never coming again.
Good venue for seeing live shows, prices are decent enough, though being Celiac my choice was mostly limited to cider or hard alcohol.
Been going for many years and the place has always been a super welcoming. You like live music? You like the rock genre? You will like this place.
Great little venue for shows. The atmosphere is pretty grungy. They should probably dim the lights on the main floor.
Chill place, Nice staff. I stop by every time I'm in Montreal.
Very miserable place. A tiny bar with a fridge, and one very cute and naive girl, asking for a tip just to handle the bottles to you :) Save yourself by not stepping there
Some of the best times Ive ever had was at Piranha bar. The staff is light, super friendly and genuine, The prices are cheap, the look is beat up but that's what gives it it's charm, super safe. Great shows playing up stairs and incredible waves of people coming in and out.
Walked into this bar by mistake... Was with a gang of friends and we were bar hopping. The place seems sketchy, and the bar goers too.... But the service we got was good and the barmaid was nice.
not great but if you like grungy places with cheap beer this is for you..
Sahdia is the an amazing bartender, she is kind and very helpful, she is attentive to her clientele and on point on everything that you need . Wow plse keep her , she is there Tuesday and Saturday go and have a fun environment!!!!
A nice place for drinks and time out...a sports bar...with high metal music. Zap your mood to high limits ????. Snacks are also served to complement your liquid desire.
Nice place to have a beer. Bartender really nice and welcoming.
Was nice. Went to see our friend perform. Cool ass place...really want one of those mannequins lol
Decent no frills bar in downtown mtl. Drink prices are still high due to the location.
Visited this bar while in Montreal. Very nice bartender, good service, overall a good time. Will go again if I'm ever back in the city/province
Good little concert venue.
SUPER rude staff. Chewed us out for tipping when hadn't even finished ordering all our drinks. They dont accept credit card here. Just avoid this place.
Good beer, pool, foosball, pinball and blaring punk rock! What's not to like!
Awesome atmosphere, great drinks and an awesome staff.
Great staff, great music, they sell art on their walls. I was glad to find a punk vibed bar in the area
Being from the Carolinas, we play this bar on our tour and it was great. The venue was great, the staff was great, a very pleasant experience.
Great bar, nice music and good atmosphere! The place to be if you like rock and alternative music.
Service was horrible, the girl at the bar had 0 interest. However I loved the ambience and the choice of music!!!! ????so I still rate it 4 stars. Only takes cash. P.S. get the barmaid to be more cheerful ;)
Friendly owner and staff! Great rock shows! New biweekly comedy show on tuesdays. #piranhaha ????????????
Intimate venue, great sound!
Good place to grab a cheap drink. A bit divey, but in a good way. Real live piranhas in the bar base, which is neat. You'll definitely meet some interesting people here.
Friendly staff and cheap drinks, also got my psychic reading done by a nice woman at the bar. GO CHECK OUT THE BATHROOMS.
Great place to spend the evening with some friends and drinks. Appropriate pricing, very pleasant staff, beautiful bar and reasonably clean. Not usually too over-crowded but "feels" like lack of space. Overall would definitely recommend and will return in the future.
Worse experience at any bar I have ever had. After the bartender messing up my drink twice in a row and not complaining and not giving us the happy hour special price even though we were there during that time. Me and my friends paid and gave a 20% tip in which she came up to us and complained about. Then as we just left she cussed us out the door. After spending a total of over $100 at the place I expected to be treated with more respect especially when you can’t make a simple Jameson and ginger. Seems like a cool place to hang out and listen to music but would absolutely never go again. First negative review and hopefully my last.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Lost of games and activities there as well.
Great beer selection and a great place to listen to live music.
Loud music filthy bar weird people
One of the most enjoyable places in Montréal for a metalhead! The bar on the ground floor is open everyday, with good music ????, a fair selection of beers with a good price for downtown! The counter is a fish tank with real piranhas in it! Piranha is also a venue for metal concerts. Local names, tribute bands, international musicians pass there often. Every week you have at least a good show to check there.
Good prices + good vibes + good tunes = great night!
Terrible service. Terrible attention to detail.
To drink and play pool, karaoke and trash to local bands with punks. Has this raw vibe compared to the more high class pubs or clubs in the area. ????
Found this place looking for a place that would play the Yankees playoff game over the Habs hockey game. This was not it. Hickey always wins in Canada. But they have a pool table. Beer. Bar food. Lobster poutine was decent. Too much béchamel sauce. But lots of lobster. Real piranha fish inside the bar. Wet friendly and helpful bartender girl. Heavy metal live music could be heard nearby. Nice bachelor party stop.
Great music, good drinks, reasonable prices! Recommend!
It's okay, but I only visited the upstairs section. It was very small for a live music room to be honest, we had trouble fitting everybody once the show started. And, while it was pretty cold outside, the room was awfully hot with no real ventilation. The alcool is also fairly pricey and the cleanliness was questionable. I would probably go back for bands I love, but other than that not really.
Bartenders didn't care that we were very obviously standing at the bar waiting to ask for a drink. They rudely walked right by us many times. The beers were overpriced (8$) and the bartender didn't give us our change back so we ended up paying 20$ for two regular beers. Also there were yelling drunk people but maybe they can't help it much and the music kept messing up cause they just get it on YouTube.
It's a good dive if you're into heavy metal
Super cool place with good drinks and some pretty nostalgically awesome 90s/2000s music.
Rad rock and roll bar with a small stage area upstairs. Great atmosphere and acceptable drink prices.
Chris was really great! Took care of us and even gave us food to make sure we wouldnt be too sick from the alcohol. Our new go to place
Great service, Pretty girls, Cold drinks, Good music.
The bar downstairs was pretty nice. Chill and good looking bartenders , nice music , good atmosphere. Went for a concert there tonight and it was definately f@$& awesome. Good place to hangout aswell.
Sketchy unless they see you as a regular (as of 4-5 months going there) they make you pay and tip for every drink instead of taking a tab. And they often overcharge for people they expect wouldn't notice. Has a regular following and I wouldn't risk interfering with that unless you want 1 cheap-ish pint
Great spot in town! Good room and sound system to attend shows. Has a nice backroom for musicians.
I love the ambiance of this place but the beer tastes terrible. I think they need to clean the lines. If you come here, beware of the drafts
Cool bar that always plays rock music and has bands perform. It even has real-life piranhas
Amazing bartender who likes to chat with customers. Foosball and pool are available to play for cheap. Good beer at affordable prices. Also, real piranhas under the bar.
Great live music experience and affordable prices!
Good beers, excellent music (metal at its best), nice bartenders... Why are you wasting your time reading this ? Just go there and ask for a drink, this place's worth it !
There's no particular crowd, here. It is just a weird mix of chill people, which makes it a very fun and relaxed atmosphere. There's a pool table and a couple games, including the legendary Galaga. Check out the big fish tank of piranha below the bar counter.
the service is bad, overpriced for a random bar wouldnt recommend at all. staff is rude.
Nice music, but the waitress that night was slow and didn't know what she was doing. Nonetheless, if you're a fan of rock and metal, it is a nice spot to spend the evening with friends and good music. Several street work going on in this area, so avoid having to drive on Ste Catherine!!!
Pretty cool metal bar ... Decent place to chill after work. Pool table and slot machines
Pretty decent spot. Weird that a bottle of beer was $5 and draft was $10. I know its a pint of local beer, but it was just a little weird to me. Id go again for sure!
Simply the best metal bar in Montrea.l The place to be for any touring bands
Fantastic bar. Fantastic music and staff. Very friendly and made me feel at home. When I went 8 saw a Black Sabbath covercbsnd. Awesome. Caroline was the bartender. She was awesome. Fun and full of energy and personality.
good gaming machines! too bad about the men who explain unasked how to punch :-( there’s also a turtle in a cage under the bar at kicking level, the glass is tapped all the time !!!! #freetheturtle
Excellent concert venue! Intimate with great sound. Seen Morbid Saint, awesome time. Drinks are not super expensive and i like how the stage is low to the ground.
Really great bar with a huge potential. It is devided in three floors : The main entrance, the underground which can be accessed directly from outside, and the second floor that contains a small place for show. I personally went most to the second floor, had a really great time in a wonderful intimate and punk ambiance, yet they don't have the best sound equipement and could clearly do better. 10/10 for the ambiance, 7/10 for the sound.
Cool local place.. They do have some aquariums under the bar..They could use some cleaning and maintenance. I also did see a turtle and a Piranha. Bartender was friendly. They have all kinds of beer on tap.
Came to Montreal from Toronto for the first time and my last night came here. Great metal bar with local beer, don't remember the guys name but he was very friendly and chill. Highly recommend this place, will definitely come back next time I'm in Montreal.
I love this place and have been going for over two years now. Very affordable and good choice of music. The only thing I find disappointing is the fact that we can't seem to order our favorite pitcher anymore. They changed there menu and we can't order fireball and coke anymore. They don't seem to know what it is. Or they try to charge us 40$ when usually our regular barmaid charges us 25.
Unprofessional service , Some customers are yelling and swearing. Not a good atmosphere. Prices are reasonable.
Great show bar, lots of great bands play here, much better since the renovations!
Meh service. Garbage beer. Decent atmosphere.
Nice sexy tattoo Girls work there!! Rock music
Loved this place! A nice break from the busy downtown hub-bub. A smallish bar and venue with a good selection on tap and a great staff. Not sure what the music rotation usually sounds like but the bartender was playing a great mix of classic and modern metal that didn't get stale and was at a volume that still allowed for conversation. Perfect!
Had high hopes but was really disappointed. Only one pool table but over a dozen slot machines. It's less of a bar and more of a dirty casino where they charge you for the drinks! The service was incredibly slow and drink selection was limited. You have a lot of better options nearby. I won't ever go back. Learn from my mistake.
Very fun bar, $3 shots, slot machines, and there always seems to be a live band up stairs
Hadia was amazing!!!!!! Go here for drinks only
the bartender spoke a good English, however she was kinda mocking when i asked for an English beer brands. i asked for recommendation and she told me to try one. then i was waiting for almost 8 minutes and told her , sorry but where is my drink ? after she was standing doing nothing and chatting . she hit her head and said i forgot and without even saying sorry to me . it wasn't a good experience and i believe customer service a huge value to learn . specially for such a touristic location
I went to see a show and didn't drink anything. I know it's a small venue but I really wished the stage was a bit higher and the ventilation more efficient.
Great dive bar
The plce is amazing. Lots of nice music and lovely people.
An ok venue with mediocre drinks and a bit of an odd vibe. Quite dark and not a lively or particularly enjoyable array of people, but fine enough for a quick drink before going to your actual destination.
My review only concerns the venue as I never went there only for drinks. Unfortunately, most of the shows I've seen there had bad sound and were really too loud for the place. The acoustics of the venues make it harder to get a good sound (especially the low ceilings), but still, it's not normal to not hear the bass drum in a metal concert. Staff is nice and location is great. Beer selection could be improved. Bathrooms are disgusting most of the time.
When ordering, bartender gave me the wrong beer and then, before grabbing the beers, she complained that what we left "isn't a good enough tip" and refused it. One star, would not recommend this bar to anyone who values friendly service.
They have a few good beer options and a pool table. Prices are decent.
Pretty average, the ???? was the highlight for sure.
the best!
rough and filthy
Pretty petite goth girls speaking French. Reasonably priced beer pitchers. Good alternative music.
Been here alone as well as otherwise and have always come away entertained. Lovely beer, great music, eclectic chill crowd and really nice bartenders!
Always so much fun at the piranha! Drinks are affordable and the music is good! They have slots, pool table, karaoke, and lots of fun to be had. Great place to hang out with friends and throw back a few drinks. Bartending is always an A+. Always stop here when we go to Montreal.
