It's a nice place, but the booze is expensive, and the line up to get into the bar & for coat check were crazy. I got in line and the door stag said it was sold out.. I left, got a call from a friend inside why said they still had tickets... So went back into the longer line.. bad can communication between for staff and inside employees. They were charging 35$ at the door for skiitour (which is usually a 20$ show anywhere else.). The only reason I went out because a friend from out of town was there. I probably will never go back unless it's the same situation where I just want to see someone that's attending a show there. They did have a decent drink selection and the venue is laid out good for a show, and the bartenders we're super nice and quiet efficient.

Walking away from the club at the end of the night (in 2015) I noticed that my pockets were empty. Guess what? The coat check staff literally emptied my pockets which included cash. I called the next day and left a few messages, but never heard back. That's all I really remember from the night, because its what stands out. I think the music was average, drinks weren't cheap, and overall it was "meh".

Good variety of talented bands come play here. That is probably the best part about this place. Bar selection/price is on par with most other places. Not super clean, but it could be worse. I personally haven’t had any issues with theft here but use common sense.

Bouncer was extremely rude and acted as if they were some sort of Diety. Forced a line out front to make the club seem busier than it actually was. Prices were steep when compared to the dead atmosphere of the place. Only positive was the location of the club, as the music was good at first and then became repetitive.

Overall, great club. Two dance floors, great music. My only complaint is that there is an "artificial" line the bouncers at the front door keep. They keep a line even when the place is half empty. I assume this is to give the illusion that the place is busy to people driving/walking by; this is a pretty big buzz kill, especially if it is cold/windy outside. Expect to wait in line 10-20 minutes if you are early and 30-50 minutes if you arrive later in the night. If its later in the night and its cold outside, you may want to consider going to another club. I like Commonwealth, but waiting in an "artificial" line is a waste of time and a buzz kill.

I liked the interior and the stage. The sound was good. We went and saw Creed from the Office and it was a good venue, but I have to say they need air conditioning or something. there was 400 people in there and it was like a sauna. I thought I was going to faint a couple times. there are a couple places to sit, but most of the area is standing room. the bathroom and a coat check are down stairs.

Probably one of my fave clubs in Calgary when I lived there years back. I have the best memories here! Two floors make it easy to get a change of scenery when you need it. The lower floor typically played hip-hip, rap, etc., on certain nights and it was my fave!

I wish to give them 0 out of 5 stars but Google won't let me. A group of us coming from Edmonton and Saskatoon met in Calgary for an enjoyable long weekend trip. Many of our friends recommended that we should check out this bar. However, we stood in line for thirty minutes just so we can be rejected by the bouncers because a person in our group appeared to be "too drunk". Funny how that is because, #1: We all had only a few drinks. #2: There were people in line that were just as and if not more intoxicated than any of us in the group. #3: I have seen my friend overtly tipsy and drunk; that night wasn't even close. To top it off the bouncers even had the audacity to retort at my friend for looking "drunk" in her picture ID (was that necessary?), and to call us liars because we are making it a "big deal" (yes because we waited in line for 30 minutes to get discriminated against for a reason that is obviously not genuine). All in all, whoever recruited these bouncers did an extremely lousy job. Apparently the control of letting people in and out of the bar had expanded their egos to the roof. The fact that I am using my time writing this long complaint a month after this incident on behalf of a friend shows just how offended we felt. Commonwealth, please fix up your staff if you want this bar to last. In the end we went to two other places and had a blast. HIFI and HABITAT, WE LOVE YOU! The staff was great and the music was awesome. Next trip to Calgary we know exactly where to and where not to go.

The more you go here - the more you get disappointed with how poorly guest lists and parties in general are handled. Bouncers let in their friends and friends of those friends, line is most times ridiculous. Music selection is stale, but fun sometimes when they play good old bangers. I'd not say it's a bad place if you come here for the fist time - but the more you come the less you gonna like it. At least that's my experience.

Typically have a good time here. They have a bunch of different areas so you get a good variety of music. Drinks are a little pricy and service is sometimes lacklustre but that’s Calgary clubs for you. I feel like the crowd has gotten younger and now there’s lots of 18-19 year olds so that changes the vibe a bit.

Been to a few events here. Not crazy about using Zoobis for tickets, but it's a little better than Ticketmaster. The crowd is not exactly what I expected when it opened up. Seems like a lot of the patrons in the line ahead of me had no idea there was an event going on, and were shocked that they had to pay cover. It's a lot different from the Warehouse/Underground but a pretty decent place to see a show or DJ.

All I can say is common has to learn how to spot the difference, one security guard thought I was wearing sweats when I was wearing normal pants. Ask another security guard, automatically assumed I was wearing sweats. What kind of rule is that when most of the people wear hip hop theme outfits for a hip hop themed club. Managing was also part of the problem when no intiative to take action to solve a silly problem.

No food and rude service pass the bouncer. Was talking to my friends and then we all got kicked out. Literally none of us even did anything?? We were dancing and talking and once a couple of us went into the washroom and took some pictures because they have a couch in there, the owner came into the washroom and had us all removed. Great venu for shows. Sound quality was really good. There were enough bars to make it easy and quick to get drinks all night. They seemed to be doing a pretty good job checking vaccine status etc.. at the door. I saw USS here and they put on an amazing show. I will for sure be keeping an eye on any other bands that will be playing at Commonwealth

Good music, however I do have one major concern. When me and my friends entered the club we didn't get a pat down, I didn't realize this until afterwards. I had heard about the club being sketchy, however upon entering I found no reason to believe that it was, but now that I realize that they don't pat you down at the entrance I wonder how many people I bumped into that were armed. Patting people down would ease my mind about going to this club quite a bit, otherwise it's a great club.

It's great to see some nightlife flourishing in Calgary! Door staff was quite pleasant and happy to direct a newbie to the right spot to see a show running in the basement while the 'bread & butter' DJ night runs upstairs. Drinks were cold - patrons were pleasant enough - everyone seemed like they were having a good time. Not loving 'Patron Scan' - but there isn't any other options if you want in. I'm sure there are safety stats proving why it's better than not, and I'm sure Big Brother puts out all of those stats :) Thanks Commonwealth -- Party On ...

Love the place...just a suggestion, don't run a bar/club if you can't afford to give out straws. Had to ask for one as they were behind the bar and was refused one because I had a water. Water or not I don't trust how clean anything in a busy club is. Edit: To the owner, that is fantastic that you're part of that initiative, but in that case have your staff explain that or at least be courteous about it because the response I was given by the bartender was "for a water ?! no." but good for you.

Be advised: Do not stand in doorways or otherwise obstruct the flow of degenerates flooding in to the main areas or risk being yelled at by strategically placed scumbag security personnel keeping a watchful eye while also being fully immersed in reading they're emails on they're phones as they reevaluate their current career path

You guys should seriously consider never hosting another concert or show. Terrible acoustics, mic had constant interference the entire night. You failed to manage a massive line up of people and left them outside for a hour and half past when you said doors opened. I honestly think I will never come back here. I was willing to overlook security here, knowing that they have that weird power trip. But the fact that the events are usually an HOUR LATE, they also have no chairs??????? So for a 2-3 hour event, youre forced to stand there. I am just shocked that this place is still open

Was enjoying my friend’s birthday, got in through guest list. Paid cover, sat down for a little bit and decided to step out front for a quick walk and smoke around the block. I was told by the guest list bouncer and exit bouncer I had to go through the extremely long general admission line to get in, which didn’t move for 15 minutes. The guest list bouncer even said “there is no way you’ll get in anytime soon.” So I decided leave without the ability to say proper farewells to friends. I am not annoyed that I had to wait in line to re-enter, what I am annoyed about is that I couldn’t get back in through the guest list line, and there was no simple re-entry. They sucked a $10 cover charge out of me, and that’s all they’ll ever get.

Prepare yourself to get kicked out by the bouncers for trying to retrieve your coat. You will explain that you're leaving and just need your coat but that doesn't matter. You will be treated disrespectfully by security staff when trying to convey your concerns. Not to mention you probably won't get your coat back. I strongly recommend going to another bar.

Good spot to watch a show if you drive cause parking is pretty easy to find around there. If you're willing to pay, there's a lot just behind the building. The space is pretty good for watching shows. Big empty space to stand and back and side space to sit.

We just went to the stand up comedy show last night. We bought the more expensive tickets seeing as they were a higher Tier for the event thinking for better seat or row. We get there they just scan you and you go in no seats or anything free for all. Was absolutely no point to buy the more expensive tickets. We got ripped off. Kinda pissed should have been more info about the tiers of tickets.

This was my favourite bar until me and my boyfriend and friend had an extremely bad experience with the bouncers there, they were racist and were on an extreme power trip, people got hurt and is it a coincidence that the only people in our group who got rough housed were coloured men and me a white women dating a coloured man because I was trying to help my boyfriend. So disappointed and disgusted! Will never return.

Good venue to see a show at. Sound was great and a bar on each side plus another down by the entrance made it easy to get a drink. A solid table/divider at the back of the pit made a nice separation between the moshers and those who are there to nod along without getting rowdy

Note: this review is for a typical non-event night. Yikes, this place has become an all-ages club it seems like. Lots of barely 18s and under-aged patrons it seems. Even if they're all legal, they sure don't act like it. Music is decent (if you like hip-hop), drinks are watered down and the coat room workers always takes 30+min to find your jacket. In other words, not a great place to go if you just wanted to spontaneously go dancing with your friends.

went here for the first time, had an amazing time with the band and staff, but super disappointed in closing hours. defs will come back on a Friday in the future, but if you host a show where a band is super dedicated to spending time with their fans AFTER shows, at least put into consideration that some people wanna stay out with them a bit longer. bar woulda made a pretty penny with our Honors boys, coming from someone who works and understands nightlife.

Highly recommend going here! Great place to lose all your belongings and be disrespected by their degenerate, racist bouncers and staff members. The staff members are on a power trip trying to rub their fragile egos.They're prepared to use their non-existent authority and lie to the police after abusing you. Do not try to have a rational conversation with the apes at the front door. They will either resort to violence or fabricate lies to get you off the public street in front of the front door while you're waiting for a ride. It's a shame that some good artists choose to perform here.

Starting to love this place now. Security is attentive AND kind, the rest of the staff I've dealt with have also been very pleasant. There's ample parking in the area and transit isn't far. They often host double shows which are fun nights! Don't like the music? Check out the other floor. They've earned 5 stars, however, they realllllyy need to fix their HVAC system. When you have a packed bar, air flow is essential for an enhanced customer experience !

Why are you charging cover at 130am??? I get it, cover should be charged but that late is crazy, no point going here folks. I loved the response from the coat check/cover charge person. Not worth commenting on this public forum. After 1am folks don’t bother going here until they change that policy. Word to management change your policy. Even the top clubs in Vegas don’t charge that....pay to get in for 5 Mins of time to order drinks I don’t think so

I've only been to Commonwealth a few times for 10 @ 10. Let me tell ya, it's the BEST time ever!!! they have 10 Hip Hop acts that start @10 pm (usually second Wednesday of the month), and if u get there before 10 pm it's free cover. If u like new and old skool, do yourself a favour and go!!

Never had a problem with this nightclub until I was wrongfully banned. If you're going to ban people from your establishment, at least ban the RIGHT person. I sent an email a little over 5 months ago and have yet to get a response. Unfortunately I was with a crowd that caused a ruckus last summer. Being one of the only ones sober that night, I was talked to by the bouncers to try and calm down the 4 rowdy individuals I was with. I went back here last February to find out I was banned. A friend of mine who was also there the night of the incident was able to get in but not me. In return, you choose to ban the individual who did nothing wrong but continue letting the ones who caused you trouble into your nightclub? Ban the innocent, but give a free pass to the teen who was uttering threats to your bouncers. Unprofessional and illogical on your part, Commonwealth.

Nothing but a group of thug bouncers who get a thrill off of messing with people who aren't causing any issues. There's a reason there are so many bad reviews about the bouncers on here, theyre all on a major power trip.

If you like wearing certain branded jeans you will be removed from the line. So in other words this place is terrible if you are somebody who appreciates style. So many better bars in Calgary these days. Music from the outside sounds really bad too. I'm from Toronto where the night life is bumping and this place is pretty awful.

Common is a great club, that plays great music. It's big enough that you can be part of the energy of the dance floor or just chill at a booth comfortably with the friends. The smoke pit is a reasonable size and it's close to other late night food places. The music is rap/hiphop/bangers all great, great energy. The responsive bar tenders are a fantastic change from Knoxvilles which is surprising because I love Knox but tend to be neglected which didn't happen regardless of the busy night at Common. Amen.

Club was nice, good service, friendly staff HOWEVER the bathrooms are beyond disgusting. Half of the doors don't have latches on them and toilet paper dispensers hanging off the wall. Ripped up couch and flooded sink/toilets.

I am disgusted at the way my friends and I were treated at this establishment. We got kicked out for no apparent reason even though we were not drunk. We got pushed out and roughly pinned up against the wall in a very tough manner when we told the bouncers we needed our jackets. We asked the bouncers to let us go since we were not posing a threat nor struggling but they did not let us go, they actually started mocking and making fun of us. In the end they opened our belongings without consent (purses and wallets) to take a picture of our IDs and issued us a bar ban. One of the bouncers put his radio (walker talkie) antenna into my mouth which appalled me and in my opinion was somewhat sexual as he pushed it in and out. I was shocked to know they had just opened my purse to get my ID when I was clearly not struggling nor drunk, and how they treated us. This was unacceptable behavior and it is something that could be dealt with legally. The camera footage will show that we were not struggling, fighting, or even in the wrong... yet they handled the situation in such a manner. Glad to know the bouncers here misbehave like this all the time as seen by other reviews. Appalled at how this situation even happened. Edit: I would appreciate a response. Also if anyone has the guts to rebuttal this claim I would most definitely like to discuss this.

The club is probably one of the best in Calgary. Apart from the theft that seems to occur on behalf of this establishment regularly. Not only was my friends Canada goose stolen, but when I returned to coat check to gather my jacket I was told that they “couldn’t find it” and to “call back tomorrow” even with my coat check ticket they were unable to find my jacket. So unless this area is easily stolen from by clientele it would be seemingly impossible to take jackets unless taken by common wealth. Would be happy to remedy this review if my jacket were returned.

Over-rated club... Music is okay depending on the dj. The one thing i hate the most about this place is the bouncers like HOLY CRAP! YOU DON'T RUN THE PLACE! JUST SHUT UP AND DO YOUR JOB. IF MY PANTS WERE A LITTLE RIP NOT CAUSE OF THE FASHION DESIGN IS LIKE THAT CAUSE I FELL ON ICE AND HURT MYSELF AND MY PANTS ripped a little cause of that... Don't be so discriminate and judging! I understand how some clubs don't allow certain brand clothes that are related to gangs. But wow... Just so you know its not just me, a lot of people say bad things about the bouncers at common wealth. The place is pretty cool though, it has 2 level down stair is more chill and they have food on the main floor close to the bar they have some decent food there.

Its difficult to rate Commonwealth. Undoubtedly they have the greatest music taste among all clubs in Calgary and their lighting quality is super cool. However, the best thing about night party is people which is most of the missing here. Not sure why most of the weekend nights it's deserted.

The only bar on par with Commonwealth is the Hi Fi club down the street. I went to a show to see Dom Dolla from Australia, and got to hear a great intimate show in the basement. Bouncers were friendly, staff was great, bartenders were on it ... you will always have a good time at common!

Music was just what I was looking for. Hip hop, 90's, early 2000, summer hip hop jams and essential throwbacks to Biggie and Blu Cantral. One thing though, younger vibe. Lots of 18 year olds and fresh out of highschool kids. Ladies, if you want the single, touchy, sneaky-dance-up on you kind of guys, this is a really good place to get it. Otherwise, beware, this is a handsy place. Bartenders serve them quick and fast. Downstairs is still serving hip hop and danceable beats, but on a much chiller level. Good times overall. ????

We hosted a 50th birthday party at Commonwealth. The venue was perfect for the crowd and entertainment - guests provided positive feedback and many newcomers expressed interest in going to future shows at Commonwealth based on their experience at our party. Most important comments are relevant to event planning and management though - Jeremiah (General Manager) and Chantal (Duty Manager) were fantastic. They were flexible, responsive and helpful. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend the venue for a private party and will hopefully host a 60th party at Commonwealth.

WORST experience ever. We had to stand in the line for 30 min for no reason. Before coming there my girlfriend had a few drinks and was a little drink. Where as i was completely sober because i had to drive. When we approached the front, the guy told me that she was too intoxicated and can not let us in. I told him i was completely sober and can take care of her. He replied "If the management sees it im screwed". i mean seriously. what the hell are you guys doing??.. People come to night clubs to get drunk and have a good time and as long as they are not causing any disturbance, you have absolute no right to kick them out just because they are a little drunk. this is the FIRST time that something like this happned with me at a NIGHTCLUB. i wish i could give MINUS stars

I have been coming to Commonwealth fairly regularly in this past year and I would have to say that your experience here can depend on a variety of factors. On a positive note, they are truly one of the last "feels like a club" bars in Calgary with two dance floors and consistent music. The upstairs portion has current top 40 rap, r&b and trap. Downstairs is more throwback (think 2000s crunk, r&b and rap), but there are occasional current songs as well. I prefer the ambience of the upstairs more though. I have found the staff here to be professional, friendly and vigilant. As for the above-mentioned factors, certain nights being certain patrons out. Game nights and key holidays (Halloween, St. Patrick's etc.) bring out the more partying folk. I saw a guy attempting to do a failed headstand once on the dancefloor on a game night and he almost crashed into me (but security was on him pretty fast). As well, I do believe that you will have a better time here going with a group of friends. Not really a great place for mixing and meeting people, but that's to be expected in a club environment.

Cool layout and nicely decorated interior. I like that there is a downstairs "backroom" stage for a second DJ to play. I found the sound upstairs to be really poorly mixed and excruciatingly loud in certain areas of the dance floor. I saw Chris Lake play here the other week and unfortunately the music did not sound good, which really dampened the whole experience for me.

Absolutely disgusting treatment of people in this place. I’ve been to every bar in Calgary and have never been treated this poorly. Was kicked out when I apparently “didn’t reply” in the bathroom, even though I was having a conversation with them. The bouncers decided that it would be appropriate to kick down the bathroom door and kick me and a friend out while she was sick. I yelled to tell them that she was sick and couldn’t leave like half the other people in the bathroom but I guess that wasn’t enough. If you can avoid this place I would highy reccomend it. Sure they have great music but there bouncers have to be trained properly and not treat people like animals.

Venue is much smaller and grimier than I was expecting, especially for a place that charges cover. Drinks are expensive and weak, staff (bouncers, door lady) are in a bad mood, and worst of all theres creepy guys in every corner agressively leering at girls. Do yourself a favor and go to National down the street.. bigger, nicer, and a more pleasant clientele, with no cover.

Nice bartenders but terrible security and front door staff. Prepare to wait in line and be kicked out for no reason. When you are, don't worry about your coat you won't be seeing it again. Especially if it's minus 20 and your house keys are inside.

The girl accepting the money was the rudest person ever. I asked the bouncer if they were still letting people in with guest list and he said yes, let the guy in front of me in with a guest list in, and when it was my turn she said “it’s past your time”, seems like she picks and chooses who to let in. And holy attitude she had towards other people. Honestly, save your money and go to Nationals, way nicer people and there is no cover. Will never be coming back here.

I am writing today to tell you how truly disappointed I am with your establishment. Not once, but twice I was targeted and kicked out due to my race. I am a quite guy, I was with friends, and was also the designated driver. When I questioned the men who were kicking me out they pointed at my face and also pointed at the chain I was wearing. I found that incredibly discriminating and RACIST. If there was a problem with what I was wearing they should of said so before they let me in, but of course they took my money first. Have a look at your google reviews !! There are multiple people expressing the same issues regarding discrimination. REVALUATE your staff and their behaviour. YOU as an owner need to be ACCOUNTABLE for this. Maybe you should walk around and evaluate your door men and bouncers. It's hard to say what happens behind closed doors until you are the one that personally experiences such horrific behaviour. If you are the owner I would be ashamed because your staff are clearly a reflection of YOU.

The worst experience I have ever had! Just dancing with my friends! Saying sorry to every one who touched me. However, it was so crowded, but I was trying to be polite as much as I can until a guard or bouncer came to me and told me u need to be kicked out! Out of nowhere because some people said I was the reason of problem i really don’t know about it! It’s so easy to have deal with my friends to kick someone out!! I am really sorry! But it’s the worst place I have ever went! I was really so excited to come here and it was the first time to come, and I was really trying my best to be kind with everyone, and It ended up with kicking me out (maybe for 15 minutes, but still switched over my mood because I did nothing out of nowhere!). If I had less than one star, I would put! The bouncers believe anything and kick out anyone!

All four of these security guards used excessive force to demonstrate their power. I have the whole incident on camera of what really happened they smashed my phone wouldn't let me grab my debit card that was in front of me. Let me pay to get in they kicked me out straight away of the club when I asked for my money back because I had not yet entered the club they ganged up on me and almost broke both my arms. Even though I was just trying to leave and grab my stuff they keep trying to use violence to demonstrate their none exciting authority. I was not on the club property but yet they still ganged up on me.

Inside is great. The intake for shows is really slow and you'll end up waiting outside in the cold for half an hour. Show up ~45 mins late if you don't want to wait outside

This is not a review of the venue but a comment directed at the person who incorrectly assumed their ticket listed the show time for Morgan James. While it is unfortunate you made an error, it seems inappropriate to direct your anger at the venue because you made a mistake. The Eventbrite website where you purchased your ticket from also clearly stated doors at 8 pm show at 9pm as shown in the attached photo.

I'm 20 and felt like I was the youngest person there. The bathrooms we're just teenage girls drunk screaming. Lots of drugs pass back and forth out of there too. The bartenders were talking almost the entire time to each other and it was hard to get service. Coat check and security were very nice though.
