Great time with Daughter great day out
Great place to go with the kids and grandkids
The geology section rocks.
Great area for kids to play and learn
I was very satisfied with the volume even though it was free. Playground equipment that uses optical illusions. Antique display of cars and bicycles Ores and natural stones Stuffed animals? and much more to see. There are also exhibits on the second floor and outside. Don't forget! If you go around slowly, you will need more than an hour. At the souvenir shop, natural stones were reasonably priced.
Best place to know Tasmanian history.
A very interesting place to visit and spend time when visiting Tassie
I very much loved the DINOSAURS, HECK YEAH
Great place to take the kids, and it has a nice little Cafe with great food.
Very litlle maintance or upgrades to the displays. Many science displays non funtional or broken since my previouse visit six minths ago.
An excellent Museum considering its "regional" status. Exceptional palaeontology collection. Well worth a visit.
Awesome
Amazing displays and a lot of fun for the kiddos and adults.
A must see.
Must see 2 venues
Fantastic day Could have wasted all day here It's free but be sure to make a donation to this awesome display
Loads of interactive science for all ages (but mainly kids) at Invermay site
The adults will love this place as much as the kids. Educational entertainment for the whole family.
Top three places to visit if you're in Launceston. Science, fun, planetarium, history and war, all under one roof. Entry is free except for the planetarium. There is a small cafe and toilets ????, including disabled ♿ toilets. Enough paid ???? is available including disabled ♿ parking and disabled ♿ access to the building. There are very active parking inspector in the area so do not take any risk. There is also a tram ride available on the site.
Top class exhibitions, a great learning environment for all ages. I try to visit at least a couple of times a year.
Nice place to spend time with family
very nice place
Excellent. What a fantastic museum full of wonders and surprises.
First rate museum and exhibits. And free, wow.
Special place
Interesting museum, but bring a coat. Even inside it's freezing
love it
Amazing collection. Excellent presentation
Absolutely a must visit for anyone in the area. The fact that this attraction is free admission alone justifies it. The museum houses a very appealing and attractive modern aesthetic but showcases with heart the history of its trains, art and wildlife exhibits. There is a lovely railway café within that has a comfy, homely touch to its signage and presentation of seating. For a cheap fee, the museum hosts planetarium shows. I took my child here and she absolutely enjoyed the cute kiddie show before the actual planet/stargazing segment afterwards which was expertly and entertainingly delivered by Chris. Before leaving the museum, Minette, the saleslady on duty had a radiant, entertaining personality and was extremely helpful with my purchases whilst also recommending great local events happening in the area. She was also very receptive to feedback and constructive criticism the store needed in regards to more local and museum specific souvenirs. Overall an unforgettable experience highly recommended for all to try.
Thoroughly enjoyed the Natural History section
Awesome and fun
brilliant museum and art gallery. great interactive exploring displays for kids. excellent display of dinosaurs and Australian fauna. excellent gift shop too
Fantastic venue to take the Kids
Lots for the kids to explore
Amazing place for the visit. Here is a some pictures and showcases that's are very beautiful.
Superb place to go and beautifully curated. Highly recommended ☺️
A great place to visit with the family that does not cost much, even the parking was cheap ($2 all day). Kids thoroughly enjoyed the hands on displays.
Took our granddaughter to see the dinosaur exhibition, she loved it! She thought T-Rex was a bit scary (the sound effects especially!), but she enjoyed the fossil pits (perfect for the younger ones). The main museum hall has a lot of dinosaur displays, as well as many other interesting items. Science zone, Apollo anniversary display, train workshop, planetarium, etc, etc... All interesting and educational. A terrific family venue.
Great gallery
Nothing really special, but there is a small protected pool with crystal clear water safe and ideal for a dip.
Amazing museum but need to do some work on their cafe
This complex is a real treasure! Such a quaint but awesome collection on display including Australian ephemera and natural history! The display of dinosaur bones is also impressive for a small city. There is also a great display of local historical artefacts that demonstrate the importance of Tasmania in Australia’s history.
Really good
Very good for a museum with free entry
I found this place is interesting to see if you are looking for a couple of days to get a chance to see their spiders attractions and give the children and adults a great day learning about arachnids around australia and Tasmania. .
Very interesting. The train work shed had huge machinery. Great how MEN could make these things. It had sound effects, whuch made it feel real.
Great for kids
Free family fun and activities good for school holidays. We spent 2hr there with 4kids no problem. Coffee and cafe great, sit inside a tram carriage.
Interesting. 'Sydney Cove' exhibit is best.
The whole family had a blast! And it's free!
Very good

Awesome spot to take the kids or just for a wander.
Cool scientific tests, awesome collection of rocks, dinosaurs and interesting history about Tasmania.
Great for the kids and adults
Absolutely amazing museum, good for family and history lover
I found it interesring and so did the kids , 7 and 11 years old.
Great place to bring the kids. Lots of interactive displays.
Wonderful place. Friendly helpful staff. At turns peaceful and raucous depending on which exhibit you're attending. Definitely going to make this a regular visit.
Great stuff and really good stuff for kids
Great exhibits and interactive components, although many were closed or broken on my visit. Even so, plenty to see and do, and the planetarium is a must.
Fantastic attraction, really accessible and enjoyable
Spewing we only had half hour in there, so much to look at, so well preserved and so interactive. Hands down the best museum I've been to and i had as much fun as my 3 year old daughter. Brendan Ballarat
Very interesting, well looked after, friendly crew. I'll be back.
Have seen parts of the museum. Very good. More to see. This time for the spider display. Glad I am not scared of them. Unlike a couple of people I know.
Took the kids here as there's a hall dedicated to kids learning and fun but more than half the interactive setups were broken. Very disappointing. There's also plenty of regular museum displays and you can easily spend a lot of time exploring but that's boring for young kids.
Outstanding service
great place to bring your kids and explore their eyes
(Translated) No tickets, you can donate 5 Australian dollars per person. (Original) 不收门票 可以乐捐每人5澳币
Great place to visit - plenty of hands on stuff
Just fantastic!
Just park in front of the building cost you $3/hr and many arts and animals statue you can observe around
What a surprise. An amazing museum/art gallery/ sciencefest. Well curated for its size... and free!
Awesome & Free
A small but very well put together museum with local relevant items and the old blacksmith workshop looks like the day they walked out of their last shift. Well worth a look, and it was free.
I love the Queen Victorian Museum and Art Gallery i always used to go there when i was little withy family and go on that bridge that made it feel like you were swinging but you weren't. I enjoyed all the fun activities i could do in that little area like the rocket and the thong that you would bang on a pipe and it would make different noises. But my favourite thing to look at was all the animals and the different kind of cares and learn about history.
Simple but very interesting museum. Had an exhibition on Marjorie Blackwell an Tas icon. Fascination plus. The old blacksmiths shed was worth the cost as well. And free.
Terrific displays that are wide and diverse and show case not just Launceston but whole of Tasmania. Great science section for the kids. Free entry except for the planetarium.
My 15 year old and 4 year old always enjoy going there.
A really excellent museum!
Nice little museum. Only takes an hour or two to see most of it though.
A lot of Tasmania histories in the Museum
(Translated) Spider expo (Original) Spider expo
Good amount of interesting and diverse exhibitions that change semi regularly to engage a broad range of interests.
Must do with kids... get awed by the dinosaur skeletons. There are many basic science experiments which the kids will enjoy while learning important concepts. Unfortunately the planetorium was closed due Australia day. Entry is FREE.
Great place for kids
Fantastic free activity for the kids
Very good modern building. Great displays. V nice cafe. Easy walking distance from bus stop. Could do worh a museum sign more visible on main road.
Always a great place to take the Children.❤ We really love it here.
Varied and interesting collection of historical artefacts which was far better than expected
The museum is a fantastic experience. My only complaint is the planetarium showed a documentary about Charles Darwin, but I wanted to find out more about the stars! Otherwise a great place to visit with or without kids.
Great museum plenty to see and even some fun experiments for the big and small kids
high standard of displays and facilities and all free!
Interesting
Love this place. It has the most astonishing display of animals of Tasmania. The displays are easy to view, descriptions are clear and environment are comfortable. We spend quite a few hours here. There are also play equipment for children, a cafe for drinks and snack, and a souvenirs shop.
Great place to check out. Heaps of hands on stuff for the kids to and adults to do.
As a foreign tourist, I feel new and highly recommended.
Fun interactive exhibitions, great for families/kids, hours of enjoyment.
Fun for everyone
Awesome
A great place for the family. It was free and had so much interesting things like dinosaur, colonial, science activities for the kids, train and so much more. Highly recommend it.
It's free and the lady in the reception is pretty nice and helpful! Worth checking out.
Interesting place for kids
Superb! The collection is interesting to adults and kids alike. The shop sells pretty earrings, metallic crystals and rocks at affordable price.
one of the best places I've been
Yes
I didn't see the planetarium. That's for my next time down in Tasmania. Good cafe. Good food . Good service. I like the way it is laid out.
Really enjoyed the spider exhibit
The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) is a museum located in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. The QVMAG is the largest museum in Australia not located in a capital city. Established in 1891, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery has a strong reputation for its collection which includes fine exhibitions of colonial art, contemporary craft and design, Tasmanian history and natural sciences, specifically a zoology collection. There is also a special exhibition of a full Chinese temple that was used by 19th-century Chinese tin miners, a working planetarium, and displays related to Launceston's industrial environment and railway workshops. The museum also houses the Victoria Cross awarded to Lewis McGee.
Interesting Educational Enviroment friendly Lovely coffee shop
Great place for kids! A morning well spent. Tram museum next door and beautiful walks behind along the river. Lovely staff and cafe is a tram style carriage which is nice.
I always enjoy learning about Australian history. The museum was fascinating with facts about the Tasmanian tiger and footage. I have first fleet ancestry, so I have an interest there. The aboriginal people have been though suffering from the white population.
Loved it but wish more was happening for kids over holidays
They have trams but we parked here to go to the football
DINOSAURS !
Lovely museum.
We came for the Spider exhibition but loved the rest of the museum more!!
This is surely one of those hidden gem for many family traveller. Very educational for kids to learn about space, dinosarus and science. Everythign was very interactive, my boys had a blast. We were there until the very last mins until the closing time of the museum. Everyone working there was super friendly and professional.
Great old blacksmith shop out the back Totally free except for the special exhibitions!
Staff are 100% helpful and friendly. Such variations in this museum absolutely loved. Thanks Tassie
Amazing collection and location
Two sites. ... Museum at Invermay and Art Gallery at Royal Park in the cbd.
Fantastic place to take the kids, great food and heaps to do
Wide range of collections, covering history, art, science, lifestyle, etc. Great customer services and staff are very friendly and helpful.
The QVMAG is dynamic and a very important and special part of Launceston More funding and support would be outstanding
good but needs to chance more often. always the same things to see
Loved the planetarium, made for a magical experience with my girls.
Dinosaurs close an hour prior to closing for maintenance
Comprehensive
Planetarium is great. Really helpful staff and interesting exhibitions. Good value for money. Slightly annoying that you have to pay to park while you're there.
What a beautiful museum with so much to see. Staff are very lovely, and entry is free.
Too expensive
Awesome for adults and children, Will visit again in a better planned trip to see more exhibits.
Great place we always enjoy
Took the kids here to see Spider expo... they enjoyed it and loved looking around the rest of the Museum. There was plenty for them to look at and lots of interactive stuff to explore! I liked the rail stuff and the old history of the site preserved like a time capsule out the back :)
small good for very little kids
Phenomena factory is great for kids.
Spider exhibit visited. A good crowd of all ages. Staff super helpful
Awesome place to take the kids to learn about science and technology
A great day out for the family and a great cafe in an old train cabin to enjoy a coffee and even a sugary pick me up treat
Wait time
Well worth a visit.
QVMAG’s extensive fine art and decorative arts collections can be found at a dedicated art gallery at Royal Park on the edge of Launceston’s city centre. QVMAG Art Gallery has an extensive colonial art collection with works by John Glover when he was painting the Deddington district in sthe 1840s, Hugh Ramsay and Tom Roberts. Tasmania’s contemporary artists are also strongly represented with large scale artworks by Bea Maddock and Philip Wolfhagen who are painting the landscape today
Amazing, very welcoming reception, great for the kids. Convenient to catch the free travel bus. Tram rides on site near by and amazing exhibition with awesome content worth a visit no matter who you are.
No wait
An amazing amount of work has gone in to this museum. It is a pleasant and informative place to visit. This will appeal to all ages and interests. Free admission too, but make sure you give them a donation.
Only got through half of the museum. Ran out of time. With free entry we will be back to do the other half.
Awesome place to visit
Very interesting. WW1 display exceptional.
Love this place.
There is currently a lot of construction out front with no mention of it online. Additionally, the interactive physics/kids area and community museum were closed (the former due to covid precautions) and again, none of this is specified online nor by reception staff when entering the establishment. Electronic information placards have been put out of commission due to covid and not been replaced with even simple paper placards to explain artefacts. It's been over two years of covid-19, plenty of time to adapt. ArtRage would fit much nicer in the gallery, offering space to host more scientiffic exhibits that I know exist and are in need of hosting. All that being said, Estuary: below the surface was gorgeous, and Natural Visions was delightful. Absolutely the kind of exhibits I excpect and love from MI. I chose the museum over the seahorse house for my last day on a nostalgia trip around Launceston and found it anti-climactic. I hope UTAS aren't running another establishment into the ground. Oh, and it was really bizarre and sort of off-putting in the Port Arthur display to have original portraits of male convicts but a "intepretive" portrait photos by students for the women convicts, when I know the same original portraits exist. Could have at the very least had both instead of erasing and caricaturising real women from our history.
Excellent exhibits. Very interesting displays, friendly and welcoming staff. Gift shop is fantastic too.
Always a great time looking at the exhibits. The spider special presentation was very good and interactive.
Nice place for kids or visitors! convenient to park and so many Tasmania artifacts to see in this museum. All my tour members like to go there. Plus, it is free.
What an amazing free museum. There was heaps to see regarding Tassie history and all about Tassie animals and even a lovely art axhibution full of unique pieces. There is a lot to read and learn. The parking nearby is paid, but we parked further down the road for it to be free. “Jonique Life” If you find value in our reviews please consider following our social media outlets on Facebook and Instagram as we highlight magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.
Fun great place for kids and adults education is fun for all. Place to eat and drink there. Worth a visit
Interesting
Great, lots of great art pieces and history to learn here
No
Very much enjoyed the experience
Great fun place for the kids to explore and learn
Educational & interactive place. Loved tram dining carriage!
Excellent and free!!!!
Great museum for kids.
The museum was closed..No signs to the entrance at all. We paid for our parking and lost the money. Very disappointing..????
Diverse range of objects, my son loves it as much as I do.
Love
Loved it. A must see whether you're a local or a visitor. The old railway blacksmith shop is incredible. Like time has stood still. Amazing!!!
Most exhibits were closed as was the cafe.
Really good. A "must see".
Amazing information
Always a bit if fun to be had, be it the changing exhibits or the interactive Play and learning area.
Wait time
Not much they don't have here, free entry.
Very interesting !

Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is really amazing. It is Free and one can easily spend at-least 2-3 hours. It is located in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. The QVMAG is the largest museum in Australia not located in a capital city.
A pretty small museum by international standards. Had a natural section, a rail section and a planetarium, but was missing the cultural or historical section.
Free entry. Lots of science, interesting artifacts and historical accounts.
This place was amazing, full of hands on activities that were interactive & fun for people of all ages, love the animals & dinosaurs as they seem so real & was a great day here being we spent 3 hours here...would recommend to anyone!
Some great science displays and lots of interactive exhibits for the kids.
Friendly and informed staff. Great array of displays.
One of our favourite Tasmanian museum we visit when ever we are in Launceston. We enjoy the difference displays, and is some way, has more to offer than the Hobart one. Our most recent visit, my children enjoy the hands on exhibits, but they are showing their age, and in some ways need to be either expanded or updated. Overall, a great museum to visit when ever you are in Launceston.
Great place, well worth the visit.
This's a very good museum. The painstaking work and expertise put into developing their collections is evident and very impressive, the collections are thorough and remarkable. And it has some collections and exhibits that are Tasmania and Launceston-soecific and quite unusual, such as the industrial park out the back. It's a testament to the quality of this museum that you could spend two days here going through the whole museum in detail and you would enjoy it, or at least I would. Launceston can be very proud of this museum.
Excellent, World War I display is fantastic. Had lunch there, delicious.
A great free museum! You should donate as you walk in though because it’s a very special place. The natural history section is really cool!
Loved this place. Free entry and lot to explore and learn for the kids. Must visit if you for young kids. Lots of interactive areas as well.
Awesome exhibitions. And free entry. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Launceston.
You have kids?? Then this place is for you. No kids?? Well be a kid here great fun
(Translated) It was terrible (Original) It was terrabile
Excellent museum. It's free too
Excellent Tassie animals section. Loved the nature photography exhibition.
Great place to visit when staying in Launceston. I just Love the Planetarium!
A regional museum with the usual general collection on display plus several areas for local items like trains and war memorialbilla of locals - interesting.
Fun
Love this place. Don't miss the art gallery, in the original museum building just st across town.
I love the museum but took a family to Inveresk recently, googling to check the cafe was open beforehand. The site indicated that it was indeed open but on arrival it was still closed down. We ended up lunching at a nearby restaurant, an expensive option.
A must visit when in Launceston. Free entry and plenty of new things to discover!
Great time spent with grandchildren here. Lots of interactive activities
Excellent quality for a free museum! Dino display was a bit disappointing and found the Dino stuff in the free section just as good. Planetarium was great though well worth the $7
Fantastic Museum with plenty of interesting exhibits. Found it was just a quick and pleasant stroll from the CBD. Greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Wow. Great place for everyone. Maintained and clean.
Great place and friendly staff ! Great displays and avtivities. ????Just wish there was more ????
Entertaining
Very helpful staff.
It's a good place to explore on weekends to learn about the museum.
Spectacular, original, some local and island based which is important, thank you
Great experience. Few more signs around the place pointing out where everything is would help ????
A small museum, still very interesting though. A great place to meet for a coffee in the cafe . A hands on science learning centre for the young. A wonderful planetarium, a fee is charged. Also a tribute to soldiers who fought for Australia.
Our sons favourite spot to visit
Fantastic and also free, kids enjoyed the interactive section
Free entry, good fun, great for kids.
Amazing
Very interesting and educative for kids and adults. Thank you for providing free entry to all.
Loved the Marjorie Bligh exhibit. Always something new to see at the museum
Very interesting and lots to see.
Fantastic place took my son and granddaughter there, 1st time for me as well. Will definitely be back
EXCELLENT ♥️♥️
It is roomy even airy and people not affected but willing to answer any questions cafe extra good food
Interactive fun for all ages. Free except if you want to see all the special exibitions (spiders and planetarium) at the time of posting.
(Translated) Great experience (Original) Super expérience
awesome place for children and their parents thst never grew up
Had a great time. Lots of interesting exhibits. Arty stuff and historical items. Awesome building. Get into it! Oh, nice cafe too!
Just loved this place
The Victoria Museum is of a very high quality. Certainly worth a visit, but set aside at least two hours.
Brilliant place for all ages very kid friendly good place to eat at good prices.bit if a catch in one section.THE dinosaur exhibit is always free but of cause its school holidays so until the end of February its a fee to get in there.
Weekend
The phenomena factory was amazing. We had a great time there.
I can't believe we have never visited here before. The most interesting and informative displays, takes in so many outside sheds?? Old workshops. We will go back as covid restrictions had some interactive displays no touching. The planetarium is a must do for any visitor, we watched the race to space story and found it very interesting and the night sky and tour round our stars was excellent. The perception tunnel was also a favorite, even if it made you feel sickly.
Awesome little museum with free entry. Make sure you check out the tassie tiger display! There is a train section thru a door on the other side of the cafe too
Reservation recommended
Lovely museum! Got a lot of knowledge about animals
Free admission. 1-2 hours ,great kids play area
a surprisingly good museum, and free (except for council parking)
A good place learn the history of Tasmania
Try the perception tunnel
Took my granddaughters 2and4. They loved it. The place is very family friendly. It's a must for.
Great place for a learning wall
Because of covid restrictions, there was only about three other people in the precinct. It made me very lonely when it wasn't filled with people.
This is an awesome museum, one of the best I have ever seen, housed in the old railway buildings and yards it is extra special, very informative, and wonderful childrens interaction activitys.
Absolutely love the museum!
Great place for kids, especially for learning science and history
Trains, Dinosaurs and much more
Always enjoy visiting, so many things to see.
Great place to visit, lots of exhibits, good food, and plenty of activities for kids.
A highly recommended day out for the whole family.
Nice place to spend a couple of hours there. Wellington Street one is smaller and the one close to UTAS is biger and a lot more to see, i have spent the whole day in these two places. Coffee from cafe is good.
A great place, needs to be advertised more
(Translated) Interesting for getting acquainted with Australian past that is limited (Original) Interessant voor kennismaking met Australisch verleden dat wel beperkt is
Awesome and interactive displays help to keep the children ingaged
The staff are so unbelievably friendly here, and the gift shop is really great
A really fun experience where you can spend at least 2 hours. Make sure to check out the art gallery and blacksmiths foundry outside!
Lots of interesting artifacts with the history of Tasmania. Free entry and a short walk from town. It's on the university campus.
Fun science equipment for the kids to play with, and I love the displays. My toddler son loves the staircase.
Awesome place to visit if you have 1-2 hrs to spare. Showcases much of Tasmanian animals and creatures, which is great for toddler learning. What was also cool were the two areas of science related play areas, some indoor and another outdoor. It was definitely a lot of fun and laughter - for kids and adults! I was excited for the planetarium but the video was closed due to their astronomer being retired recently. There is also a Blacksmith area outside which wasn't all that interesting unless you're are into the metalwork machinery.
Great place to take my 4 yr old. Staff are very friendly and helpful. We love it.
Definitely worth a visit, with lots of interesting Tasmania specific history.
Great for all ages. I especially love the war memorial.
Passable museum in which to spend an hour or two.
Absolutely Fantastic! The interactive displays in the science section are great for all ages. The "normal" museum display is brilliant, as ever, but atm they have a special, lifelike dinosaur feature, which is separate and very informative. We have our grandkids here and it is a hit!!!! To top it all off, there is an excellent little cafe with lots of tables and chairs. This serves good, reasonably priced food and they give very generous servings!!!! A fantastic venue, very cheap - BRILLIANT!
Was impressive....well worth the time to visit ....unfortunately we didn't allow enough time as did not realise the museum closed at 4pm. The use of the old railway workshops to house the museum was a fantastic choice and the best possible rebirth for the city's historical buildings....the displays we saw were immaculately and interestingly presented. 5 out of 5 stars!!
30–60 min
We love visiting here when in Tassie.....I am still astounded such an amazing place is free to visit!!!
Small city museum, but punches way above it’s weight. Beautifully curated, full of interesting artefacts from around Tasmania. Plenty of activities for kids. Great place to stop for an hour or two if you are touring Launceston.
Small museum and fabulous display on the history of the thylacine
Beautiful Museum full of interestings objects to look at.
Great place to spend the day. Kids loved it
Excellent museum Fantastic art works on display currently from the year 11 and 12 students from last year Amazing animal displays from birds to dinosaurs Excellent outdoor activities for children and also adults looking to have a little fun as well! Highly recommend this if you are in Launceston!
The beginnings of what is now the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery come from collections of the Royal Society of Tasmania and the Launceston Mechanics Institute, founded in 1842. The Museum itself, originally named the Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, was officially opened in 1891 at Royal Park. The project had been many years in the planning and was originally intended to be an exhibition. The State Government advised that it would prefer to fund a museum. The Museum building was designed by a young architect by the name of John Duncan, whose design was chosen as part of a competition. Originally the Museum had a caretaker but no curator. The first curator was Herbert Hedley Scott, who began the role in 1897. Scott quickly built an excellent reputation with his research and curatorship gaining international attention. To avoid confusion with the Victorian State Museums, the Launceston City Council agreed to the amended title of 'Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.' The early collections focused on mineral specimens and natural sciences on the ground floor of the museum, with art displayed on its upper level. More space was needed, so in 1907 the first extension was built to house a zoological gallery. In 1927 the museum gained a significant additional collection, with the purchase of the John Watt Beattie collection, a treasure trove of early colonial history and art, including an extensive convict-related collection. Scott's successor was his son Eric who was also a well-regarded scientist, and also further developed the Historical displays. In the years following, more extensions were built and the collections and research continued to develop. In 1998, the Museum began the development of a new site at the Launceston railway yards in Inveresk which opened in 2001. Six years later, the decision was made to create a dedicated Art Gallery at the original Royal Park site with the Inveresk site concentrating on Natural Sciences and History. The flagship 'Tasmanian Connections' exhibition opened in 2010, and in 2011 the refurbished Art Gallery finally opened as a space dedicated to Visual Arts and Design.
Top exhibits for all ages
Great museum, disappointed you have to pay for parking. Last time I went parking was free.
Great museum, we had a good time there
Free entry and lots of amazing things to see
Free free bus
Been here 100 times still loving it ❤
Best museum in tasmania

Very interesting and free entry. Worth a look
Keen to return after the renovations to see if it can earn the last star. The open spaces we very well presented
Brilliant museum. So much to see. Have to go back to finish what we started.
Great indoor and outdoor exhibitions. A great day out for individuals, small groups and families.
Interesting dinosaur and Tasmanian history permanent exhibit. Hands on science zone for kids. Cafe. Free documentaries. Old train and workshop stuff linking to the local history. Planetarium is a bit of fun.
Pretty good
Good place, Many interesting thing. Sevice is great!
Good for the whole family
Great place to visit
Good exhibits, lots of variety
Excellent.
Amazing museum, with a well balanced display of local history and natural history. The display includes a terrific history of the Launceston railway workshops.
Small but well appointed science section which entertained the son for a good while. Also a pretty impressive selection of stuffed animals found in Tasmania all are named and identifiable via the computers; had fun trying to recognise all the ones we had seen.
I thought this was an excellent museum . There has been huge efforts to make the museum authentic and yet it is very exciting for anyone xxx
Excellent museum well worth a visit
It is a very nice building and the dinosaurs are impressive. The interactive kids section is super fun as well.
Not bad for a provincial town's museum.
The QV Museum has Free Admission, there may be a cost for the planetarium however you can play their games, see the fossils and vintage history for free. Always love going for a free tour and a free jaffa.
Fantastic place for children to explore, so much to see and do
It was very comprehensive
Great place to take the kids to learn. Our little ones loved the interactive displays. Going through the tram museum. There were a little disappointed the tram was not running the day they went. But it does give another reason to go back. Seems to have become a regular activity to attend in the school holidays
Great interactive area for kids to play and learn!
Launceston's very own museum of art, culture and science
We're not big museum folk but we really enjoyed this one and wished we had of allowed more than an hour. The display of local wildlife helped us figure out what we had seen and what to keep looking out for. For the price of a donation, we're likely to go back ????
Good
Wonderful
We always enjoy our time at the Museum but it really needs to update some of the exhibits or at least have a bit more of an interaction based part, not just the phenomenon part as a lot of that stuff either doesn't work or it's been there forever
You can't really complain much more for something that's 99% free, said I, dusting off the salt on QVMAG's shoulder
Interesting history and activities, great for families and kids.
What an amazing museum!! Can't believe it is FREE? This place has tons to see and do, heaps of history of Tassie's industrial era, animals and a heap of hands on science activities that our kids loved. This has got to be a must see for anyone visiting Launceston.
Always a great place to visit
So much to see here for both adults and children, and its FREE!????
Very good as always.
Great place
Very good display of exhibits!
Yeah man Tassie Tigas sheeesh
Recommend. Lots of hands on activities for the kids which they loved!
Went to the museum just a week ago. While it was interesting and informative....what was disappointing was the lack of information and acknowledgement on Tasmanian First Nations People and how they were treated and their demise? Granted, only went to First building....there was more on the USA landing on the moon than Tasmanian history regarding Aboriginals!!!
(Translated) great museum It's a pity that there is construction outside ???? However, the exhibition inside is really good! (Original) 很棒的博物館 很可惜的是外面在施工???? 但,裡面的展覽真的很不錯!
Southern skies is a good interesting movie. Fossils were good to look at. But collection was a bit limited
Plenty of things to do and see, kids love it ????
Highly recommended for day trip around Launceston
Very interesting section dedicated to the history of Tasmanian railways. A good number of original artefacts on display. Free entry too. The hands on science section seemed to be a big hit with the schoolchildren. Unfortunately a number of exhibitions were closed at the time of my visit due to a forthcoming events.
Great place to learn, to know!
The museum is an absolutely stunning place, the staff are so friendly and there are plenty of interactive things for the kids. We ate at a delightful cafe inside with very reasonably priced food. The entire museum is meticulously looked after.
Had great experience lots to take in and veiw, old rail yard l regret not taking a photo of the rails stopping at main entrance
This is a real gem. The science sections is amazing and the other areas are well designed and informative. Loved the dinosaur section and trains. Would love to see more on the Christian history as very few museums have any information or artifacts on the rich religious history of Tassie and Australia.
Well worth a visit. But the food shop is cool in temperature I guess because its inside but on either side of a thorough fair to the rest of the museum. Had good food n friendly
Great place to take kids. The perspective tunnel was really interesting.
Pretty good museum. Enjoyed it
One of the best small museums I’ve visited.
Great place to visit. Lots of interesting facts & pictures of the old railway mill, as well as photos & artefacts of historical interest. A great interactive science section ( even for us adults), & dinosaur exhibit & courtyard as well as blacksmith workshop. Definitely recommended. Didn't have time for the planetarium show but would have liked to go.
Amazing place to take the kids
Great place to visit with two early teens. The dinosaur exhibit was very informative and a great combination of animal and historical items. Sad to read about the fall of the Tassie Tiger. Really liked the train and space exhibit too.
A must to visit! Great photographic exhibition of the hydro power stations - captures the dismal feeling of the environment, having lived there brought back memories as a hrdro village kid. Aboriginal museum was one of the best I've seen yet, curated by indigenous Aboriginals to keep it accurate. Historical. Paintings above, Young Artists of Tasmania and their displays made for a two hour stay....A Chinese Imperial display was quite a different find. Upgraded facilites are fantastic, best toilets in Launceston. Books and literature on offer as well.
Great Museum! Very educational & well set out. Has an awesome gift shop too ????
Absolutely amazing place to visit. Lots to see and friendly staff. I love it
A good space with excellent activities for kids both indoors and out.
No
Contemporary and classic art.
Enjoyable day out showing a friend our local museum, lot of interesting exhibits looking back over the years, trains and history of the Inveresk Train yards & workshops also enjoyed the Natural Visions exhibition of photographers in Tasmania through the years of our spectacular Tasmanian scenery.
Fantastic museum and lovely staff! Very educational!
I enjoyed my visit to QVM, lots to look at , disappointed the local history area wasn't open at weekends, but heaps to see and do
Loved this place. Never thought a rail yard could be so interesting.
The quality of the displays and exhibits was top-class, beautifully presented and atmospheric, and the information was engaging. There was nothing boring here! Especially loved the children's hands-on areas: we 4 adults tested all the stuff! Totally recommend this as a must-see in Launceston.
Reservation recommended
So many great exhibitions. WIll be back because there was too much to see in one visit.
It's a lovely museum with a range of items on display.
Plenty of interesting things to look at easy to get around and staff very helpful
Love this place, fabulous exhibits like my fave dinosaur and natural history. Outside there are community exhibits and even a huge blacksmith shop plus the train engine room of the early days! Go see it, it is free, bonus!
Nice walk thru with well maintained lawns and trees. Has small conservatory and interestingly a monkey enclosure.
Love all the exhibition
I spent an enjoyable couple of hours perusing the museum and gallery. I particularly enjoyed the exhibit on the Sydney Cove shipwreck. There is an environmental take on exhibits which I found really thought-provoking. I was blown away by the creativity on display in the gallery. Such amazing work. I'll be back!
Equivalent of scienceworks in Melbourne but Tassie version.
Great centre considering the population of Launceston. Lots of kids stuff to do and good facilities. Don't forget to do the Black Smith exhibit out the back.
Very nice exhibit & very organised
Great collection, friendly staff, free entry and a reasonably priced souvenir shop ????????
Love this place and so do my kids
Nice Museum, Free entry
Brilliant place for a Sunday outing pleanty to see and do with the interactive displays great for all ages and there's a cafe onsite if you need to refuel the body
Great to take the kids trail around. The kids LOVED IT.
A great little Museum with a bit of everything, well worth a look. Plenty of fun activities for the kids to do as well.
No wait
Love the dinosaurs
Awesome well laid out Museum with lots to explore..
Great for the little and big kids
Nice
Great place
Great place. Has the history of Tasmania, Australia and trains . Loved the birds section too.
The Planetarium was our reason to visit and our 2 year old loved the experience of the Cardboard Rocket, the presentation we went to see. We loved the outdoor exploring area and the dinosaurs but were saddened by so many child friendly exhibits being closed during school holidays. COVID has a lot to answer for! I would recommend the QVMAG for a plesant day's outing if you like to wander through and wonder.
Free and some fantastic displays of heritage and science!
Very diverse collection, the old blacksmith exhibit was a particular highlight
Awesome displays and experience. Recommended to visit for a few hours!
Just a magic place, well presented and a credit to all the staff involved.
Loved the Planetarium. CAPCOM was brilliant.
Wait time
the QV Art Gallery is good the Tea Room is lovely and the staff are friendly and very accommodating
Great place to see
Great museum and grounds. A place worth returning again and again.
At Inveresk a great blend of local and natural history, space and astronomy with a visit to the planetarium as a must see. Also a great art gallery at Royal Park.
As always, a great place to spend time
Always a pleasure to come to see the interactive kids areas and the changing special exhibits and permanent displays. Staff always friendly, s great place to spend an hour or two, or longer!
The planetarium is my favourite part of the museum as it is so educational and the visual effects are amazing! The phenomena factory and sensory courtyard are great fun for those who like interactive displays. The dinosaur fossils, Tasmanian Heritage and animal display was interesting and informative.
Our museum is a great asset to Launceston.
A great deal of my youth was spent exploring museums and daydreaming about the stories behind the exhibits. The planetarium was my favourite place to expand my child like sense of wonder that lasts to this day. Great venue and friendly staff.
Great place to take the kids informative and fun

Art gallery more suited to yuppie s. Displays impressive No access to planetarium.Another disappointment.
Interesting place
Its was nice a I think children can enjoy there also
It was great walking around the old workshop foundry
Loved this place well worth visiting
Great place to spend a wet cold day
Beautiful can't wait to go back
Lots of fun free exhibits to look at. A+++
Interesting museum, lots of unique Launceston exhibits, seen some really cool exhibitions, and who doesn't love the planetarium? Definitely recommend, especially since you can see most of the museum for free. There's also the Phenomena Factory, which has some cool hands-on science for the kids.
Very interesting history and interactive learning experience!
Weekday
Pretty cool and well maintained museum. Lockers for your bags and loads of information about the region. There are tickets that can be bought for certain shows at the planetarium. We just enjoyed the free section which was great as well. Will definitely give the paid sections a visit too.
Really enjoyable for all age groups, with lots of interactive services that i everyone else can appreciate
Visited by myself one day and took the kids there the next. An impressive little collection and plenty of stuff of interest for children too.
A great way to spend a couple of hours with the kids - and it’s free! Our son loved the interactive science workshop and looking at all the dinosaur bones - there were plenty of opportunities to touch exhibits too which was an added extra bonus
Very fun and educational. Even though the front is under construction, it didn’t affect my 5 year old to enjoy the place immensely, especially the experiment areas where she got to learn and practice basic science. We also watched ‘We are stars’ at the planetorium which inspired her to be an astronomer!
(Translated) Very interesting museum. It's a museum to do with children, especially to discover science! (Original) Musée très intéressant. C'est un musée à faire avec des enfants, notamment pour leurs faire découvrir les sciences !
Weekday
Fascinating exhibits.
Good place to learn

(Translated) Free and cool. (Original) Gratuit et sympa.
It was really good. They have science, space, trains, archaeology, as well as other bits n bobbles. plus it was free, although donation is recommended
Free to enter, great place for the kids to have fun and learn brilliant
Well worth a visit
A great museum that you must visit. Local history and art blended seemlessly with more traditional museum content makes for a great experience. Hands on activities for the younger visitors to interact with as well.
A very interesting place
Absolutely loved it! It was not what I expected, and so caught me off guard. Free entry great exhibits for which adults and kids can enjoy and interact with. If you got time to visit only one museum in Launceston, then this should be a top 3 of choices to pick from. You won't be disappointed.
A must visit for anyone in Launceston. Plenty of interactive displays and some great pieces of history.
Very interesting and captivating exposition

Some areas closed but the phenomena areas great for kids, very interactive
Nicely curated exhibits including birdlife and objects related to the interesting story of the Sydney Cove ship.
Great museum, great cafe.
Great exhibitions that entertain for hours.
Cool spot. Give yourself a min 2 hours to see it. Great section on the Tassie tiger!

Great place to visit, and the planetarium was excellent.

Very good
Love a good museum, plenty to look at always has a good atmosphere and their gift shop has some of the best fossils.
Need to go again to do the exhibits justice. Brilliant use of former industrial premises
Had a great time exploring and reading all the information was a great afternoon.
Loved the vast array of wild life on display.
Highly recommend to visit.
Well layed out museum with displays and artifacts and well worth a visit if you love our history.
Plenty to see and learn about. Gets a bit cold in the train yard/planetarium section.
Wait time
Showcases some amazing Art. Local artists and history at display as well as some ever changing exhibitions coming around. Free entry. Must visit.
Its Free!!! Except for the parking of course, which by the way is very cheap. Plenty of parking too. This is a really good spot, lots of interesting things to see here. Something fro everyone, including the kids!
Awesome place. Something for all age groups.
free admission so why not go
Unfortunately subjected to special treatment here by an overzealous and affixed security femme. Grandkids were approached more than once and told they needed a parent - I was no more than 2ft away - meanwhile many children ran unsupervised and were not even looked at. Meanwhile we were the center of attention. Wont be returning for more stalking and focus - very unwelcoming. Great displays, but mid-aged female security too unhinged to stay long enough to enjoy. Dont go unless you like stress.
A wonderful little museum
It looks great the staff are doing great job
This is a cleverly curated museum. The exhibits are spaced individually and contain the written and visual information necessary to inform but not overwhelm with superfluous detail. The kids area is fun, learning and entertaining. A great planetarium, exhibits on key Tasmanian flora and fauna done to intrigue rather than gather dust. The Sydney story was fascinating and an excellent example of the quality of its curator(s).
Very nice place, but weather was terrible when we were there
Well worth a visit. Thoroughly enjoyed my time. Well done displays, and good coffee!
Lots for the kids to do and see...
Great exhibits
It's free.....it's also really good. Recommend 2 hours maybe 3 but 2 should be more then enough to have a good look at most of the exhibits. Should defiantly check out the planetarium to (it's like $8 or so) run by volunteers who clearly have a keen interest in astronomy and the Carl Zeiss lens projector looks kind of like a naquadah generator from Stargate
Visited today did the dinosuar exhibit walked around for a couple of hours particularly liked the Tasmanian tiger exhibit and the exhibit on the trains plus the planetarium. Plus went to the cafe and had a cheeseburger was absolutely delicious. Well worth going in and seeing
Enjoyed looking at the motor cars ,Birds nest,Birds, and Marjorie's excellent works..
Such a great place for kids and adults alike!
Very nice museum, really worth a visit...
The Planetarium is is a great place for young and old. Learn what's in our sky and what we are made of.
You know your been around when things in the museum you have used or owned
Really good but many kids exhibits not working
What a cool place
Great museum for Launceston
Friendly stuff and alot of hands on for kids to do
Super-impressive museum. Really well curated and presented IMO. Our kids dug it too.
Loved it! Well worth it.
Amazing for the kids and some really interesting exhibits
Great exhibits, hard to believe it was all free (donation appreciated)
Free entry. Pity you have to pay for parking though! Based around railway workshops though there is a section on astronomy and space travel. A number of interactive displays. Tramway rides around the exterior. The smells in some areas are very reminiscent of railways.
Fantastic and free
