Excellent Exhibitions ~ Lovely Helpful Staff ~ Combined Cafe And Shop Filled With 'Must Haves' ~ Great Place To Visit ~ Make The Effort To Go ~ You'll Be Surprised !

Maryama Elmi

Always interesting exhibits about the cultural diversity in Victoria and how it came about. Coffee is excellent at their tiny cafe.

Emma Clayton

This was a great experience. The staff were incredibly friendly. The museum itself is very interesting. So much to read and see. Also, games you can play. There was an exhibition on love when we visited and it was simply beautiful. It's walking distance from the Flinders Station and a must visit when in Melbourne.

Sean Dicitra

IF YOU WANNA GO THERE TO VISIT THE IMMIGRATION BOAT, IT’S BEEN REMOVED NOW. We paid $60 just to see it, but we realised it’s been removed. Waste of money

Nadia Ibrahim

Liked the temporary exhibits, learned more about Gandhi

Carla Brown

Amazing documentation of the whole Australian history of immigration. The artefacts, detailed information boards and interactive displays were excellent. Acting as an immigration officer was daunting and fun. Made the decisions with total strangers and we got it wrong each time. LOL Learnt a lot and it will remain a memorable experience for me. The staff that welcomed me at the entrance were delightful and guided me to the right exhibits. Thank you!

Tamzid Farhat

Lovely old building with effective use of spaces. "Love" exhibition was a great idea with stories about all types of love relationships.

Nyukiland

Very well made, not too large, providing a good overview of the immigration history. Some parts are very hands-on, seemingly targeted at high school students.

Thao Ly

Tells the story of Australia's diverse populations. Reminds me that we are all humans and strive for the same things ... to reproduce, eat and live in a safe environment.

Karen Davies

$15 entry for non students. Wasn't a huge amount there. Random art installations too

May A.

Really good museum to see the history of australia and how the current state was formed. Really opens your eyes to the immigration history and how people made their way to Australia. Worth the visit for sure if you're interested in history.

Wesly Thomas

For a Brit this place is a must, it's not particularly big but you can easily spend a couple of hours reading the history between our two countries.

Thomas Ricks

Good place to visit and get insights about the contributions towards the immigration

Wendy Schweikert

Really loved the Love Exhibition, such a thoughtfully curated show with great stories and pieces with different aspects of the subject matter. Affordable entry as well.

Melissa F Parkinson

We were very excited to go to that museum and it was very interesting at the beginning. In the first three rooms there were so many interesting facts about the actual immigration history. However after a while it got more boring somehow. Doing the quiz about Australian systems, rules and regulations was a nice idea to check the own knowledge.

John Moonraker

Great exhibition on Japanese Tattoos, overall quite an interesting place. $15 seemed a bit steep considering the small size of the museum.

buxzy

Excellent experience, very friendly staff and a lot of information to read

Victoria Panteleeva

There were parts of the museum I found interesting but needs to be upgraded to reflect the cost of entry. From comprehensive and informative though, great for schools.

Graeme Hugo

Must see for visitors of Australia, it is a really good look into the history of Australia through the lens of immigration, with a lot of important info

Wallace Wong

Visited Immigration museum today and was so disappointed. It looked like a year 12 English project and certainly not an appealing exhibition for the young. As for the appeal to migrants, unless they are proficient in the English language they would find the exhibition boring, due to the copious amount of text and lack of models in each exhibition.

Yulia

Spectacular, great place to know more about history of different kind of cultures in Autralia

Rick

Great place to visit. Very interesting and informative.

David Xu

It's a good place to learn the immigration history, but maybe boring for kids. It has a dedicated Chinese section which is rare to see. The elevator experience wasn't good, feels like it's going to fall.

Ben Pickett

A beautiful building, easy to get to, and get around in, celebrating our multicultural nation. What's not to love (and the bookshop/cafe makes a lovely coffee too)

Thomas Gleeson

Lots of very detailed history and interesting artifacts from Australia's past. Saw a traditional tattoo exhibition whilst I was here, which was also very interesting. Students get in free. Would definitely recommend.

Varun Gangal

Angela Paz

AWESOME PLACE

Mark Tan

I went there with high hopes but cam out deflated. I was expecting some migrant stories I might connect to, but there was not. Anyway government has to spend some money somewhere, where no one will challange.

Mathieu Jacobs

A nice place to find out about Australian, mostly Victorian, immigration history. Gives insight into Australia's racist past while giving hope for multiculturalism. The building itself if a gem but the side exhibitions were the highlight for us. Exhibitions change regularly so worth checking their website for more details

Nicholas Williams

The stories of struggle, hardship, joy and pain make this experience very worthwhile if you have the time to read and absorb everything in. look to spend about 2-3hrs in here. There are three floors to go through and each one unique.

Mia Goreng

Very relaxing place. A lot of seating to read or watch videos and a great area out the back for lunch.

Geoff Trimpol

Simply min blowing... Specially Hampi on the top floor... Students will get discounts, simply carry your student card..

Marianne Hodgson

Great Cultural Experience and Exhibitions about Diversity. The Love Exhibit on level 2 is recommended for all Romantics. Perfect for a Valentine's Date.

Ali Mowlaei

A diverse range of people's stories over the years of Australian history

English Chaai

The nice and quite place to make a show (exchanging the ideas from different background) with small group of people. Near to public transport(trams).

Binay Rathore

So history. So much that was wrong but has been put right to a point.

Wilson

My most interesting museum in Melbourne and one of the most mind challenging museums ever visited. Definitely worth a visit and kudos to the polite and friendly staff running this wonderful institution.

May Alam

Looks like a fantastic place for holding events! Went past whilst it was being set up for a party...

Aman Rajput

Interesting history of migration of different countries to Australia

Interesting exhibitions on immigration to Australia through the decades. The featured exhibition on cultural tattoos and tattooing was a highlight of my recent visit.

Yuri Miloslavsky

Definitely a must see when in Melbourne Amazing concept, true human experience & above that a creative interactive displays

George Mackley

Fantastic place to find out how immigration happens, especially things of the past. Also finding out ‘identities ‘. Great place ????

Premesh Silva

Learned many things about Australian Immigrants and cultural diversity. Beautiful building, well maintained and clean. Went on weekdays so not too busy. Walked around the museum for approx. 2.5 hours before heading to the cafe at ground level. Also check out thier museum store located right where the cafe is. They sell few interesting items and books.

Norma Lopez Ingle

Fantastic insight into what has made Australia into what it is today. Highly recommend

Julie Scott

Definitely deserves a visit, it gives you a good insight on how strict (or should I say, racist) Australian immigration policies were in the past, with great interactive activities to show that.

Ravi 7265

Went there for a venue the place is amazing with its walls full of interesting posters about the life's story of migrants in Aistralia and others of history of Australia and some cities with old photos

Amal Joy

It's really nice and informative and I could see there's been a lot of thought of how to present it m, yet, I'd maybe make it a little more modern and interactive. Thanks for the kind welcoming

Guglielmo Delasa

Amazing display of artifacts and information. Located in the oldest government building in Melbourne. Learnt a lot about the history of Melbourne and Australia. Must visit place for visitors to Australia as well as Australians. Make sure to take part in the guided tour.

sahara sharma

I did not anticipate how much really fascinating material is housed in the Immigration Museum! Stories of every kind, and all true! Please visit more than once, to avoid information overload, but still get enough out of it!

Ian Ridley

It's very relevant to identity narratives that are prevalent in our world today

Gabriella Marie Andrepont

Personally very impressed by the profound and broad contents they provide.

Mazzy

I'm glad that most people find this museum interesting. The entire museum presents an entirely superficial look Australia's immigration history. While it's quite nice to see an immigration museum at all, i was really quite disappointed in the lack of detail. It really feels like someone put this together from googling Australia's history. Very little information given on specific immigration policies from different periods.

Milkha Singh

Not any real detailed information

George Ligocki (Jerzy Ligocki)

Great place, lots of information, fun building and history

Kristin Sutter

Really great exhibit on "love". Rest of the museum was also very interesting. Good to see they didn't try to gloss over Australia's complicated history with immigration (anti-Chinese policies, dictation tests, etc.). Really interesting and a fairly inexpensive way to spend a morning or afternoon.

André Lichtsteiner

Awesome place!

Kenny Watson

Excellent .History and two great exhibitions .Mao's Last Dancer and Ghandi

Seamus Ryan

Gorgeous building and amazing galleries inside, so beautiful and mind opening

Tejas Patil

Always good to see where people come from! The history, the stories! The seniors have free entry to this important part of Melbourne

Huo Lijie

Good for a quick visit, free for kids and students

Dexcellent Productions

Very interesting place to visit. Self guided tour which takes approx 90 mins to complete. I learned so much more about the first people arriving to Australia by ship and what the true Australians went thru, and all from the museum. Definitely recommend a visit. Sorry photos are limited but I wasnt able to take photos whilst inside.

Ståle Fjeldstad

It is the right place to understand Australia history and trade. Design was successful.

Harish Sundar

Worth a visit. Well laid with a lot of historic information, pictures and videos. Some non related exhibitions which I assume change from time to time.

John Darcy

I haven't been there, I have passed by there a few times on the train, or walked past there!!!!?.

Ian

This was such a beautiful place to go to. My favourite is obviously who do you love. Some amzing stories were heard in that room.

Joseph Kanakaraj (Joe)

easy to go everywhere and the museum is informative

Henry Espejo

amazing, must see if you come to Melbourne !

Holland Kerr

Visited here on the recommendation of others. Fantastic display & stories of Australia's colorful immigration policies of the past. Was a good visit.

Clare Lyon

A great museum that everyone should visit. An eye opener!

Effie Savvaidis

Loved the "Love" show on at this gallery. The next floor up was just as great reading and viewing the history on immigration in our country. Thank you to all volunteers.

Mei Yew

The right place to learn about the inception of Victoria.

#nancys_endless_summer

Some really interesting facts and object how people migrated in Australia , overall it's good and knowledge enriching

Vivian Christogianni

We found the immigration museum stale, and lacking interactive installations. Very passive overall. We were quite surprised. Photos in the visiting tattoo exhibition were repetitive. Paying aud15 for this was not what we expected.

Suzan Vasica

Finally visited today after it being on our list for quite some time. Was really underwhelmed, the main exhibition was good, the other 3 not.

Jim Buzbee

Good museum. Two or three hour visit free entrance for age 60

Christien Wilson

So interesting to find out about immigration to Victoria. Beautiful spaces with balance of static and interactive displays.

zaprams

Very enlightening, thought provoking and real. Very well curated, highly recommended.

mel G

This was amazing and it was a great idea to know we come from a rich history, and is going to be very helpful if you have moved to Australia and have no idea about the rich history which lies here! This is a place simply remarkable and it shows how lucky we really are to live in a country where we have no endangerment to our lives, no shortages or scarce amount of food and water and a roof beneath our heads. We truly take this blessing for granted. But you will learn and see for yourself how a lot of people sacrificed their lives for the betterment of ours. There you will find a lot of things like Immigration and why people chose to come live here in this country. So please explore it and comment down below what you loved the most there!!! ???????????? Amazon prime example of the African countries and I am worried about how to treat your citizens especially the conduct of the population that has never seen a single episode of the population that has never seen a single episode of the population that has never seen a single episode of the population that has never had it for the betterment of my favorite part of my friends and recommend to anyone who has been a while and then I can even you have to go. In the end this is where we die. ????

Shweta Chettiar

A brilliant place to learn about the reasons why many have moved to Australia over the years and we really enjoyed the "Love" exhibition. Friendly staff too. Well worth it. Plus kids are free!

David Marshall-Irving

Student can visit the museum for free. Learnt a lot about Australia. Should visit for everyone who are in Melb!

Dani Nefa

Building is beautiful, but the content is sparse and some of the interactive exhibits didn't work properly.

Atheer Althebyani

I really enjoyed this place. It was a nice change to all the racism/bigotry we have been facing in main stream media as of late. It was super informative and emotional to see the story of immigrants and refugees, and the hardship they endure before they reach out country. I also really loved the LOVE exhibition. It melted my heart and evoked lots of strong emotions in me. Lots to do for both adults and children although some of it was outdated and a bit repetitive. Would definitely recommend

Idan Goldberger

Haven't been to this museum in some time. So many wonderful new exhibitions. Staff very friendly. Efficient entry and exit following all COVID restrictions. Love Museums Victoria. We're lucky to have such amazing museums in Melbourne.

Cristina Taylor

An interesting museum that looks at Australia's immigration history and policies. There was also an exhibition on the concept of identity and how people define themselves.

Cesar DIY

Very relaxing place. A lot of seating to read or watch videos and a great area out the back for lunch.

Arquitecta Alba García

Traditional story telling meets the 2020's interactive and artistic story telling experience in these Covid-19 times.

Heather Craig

Everybody should get a chance to experience what is offered at this informative museum.

Laurence Greaves (Laurie)

A great museum with heaps of history and detailed exhibits. The entry price of $15 was fair and I spent about 90 minutes there. You could easily spend longer here, if you read and watch everything. Definitely worth a visit if you're interested in how culture and immigration fits into Australia's past.

Simon Gyllenhammar

Great museum with the focus on the immigration; the people that arrived, who they were, how they're arrived, and when. They also go through the discrimination, the British policy making and the following Australian policies. They have so many artifacts from history and so much information. They also have some information about the customs house itself. I love that the place isn't too big, it's perfect size for the job. It's a great museum and I highly recommend it!

Maria Agelonitis

Usually has tasteful, yet thoughtful exhibitions exploring nationality and culture in this area of the world.

Gerald Varley

Excellent Exhibits on at this time.I was moved.Pleasnt staff.Free for seniors.

Growth Markets Advisory

Friendly staff...great attention to detail each story.

Nayla Chaptini

Went to see the Love exhibition.. excellent curation, stirring stories

Kieran Short

Great location, close to Flinders St Station. Well worth a visit!

Shane Gardner

A great place to see the history of immigration in Australia.

Nicole Garcia

I found that there was excessive amounts of information and no logical way to see everything, meaning that a return visit would be needed. .

Jarrod Haynes

Valentine's Day Latin night was fantastic.

Zareen Padhye

Was good but not free entry for the good collections.

Jiwon Jeon Kim

An enlightening experience given the issues facing the world!

Swasthi Pillay

Staff was friendly and helpful. I found content to be lacking in that Melbourne was settled and acculturated through the influx of southern Europeans who were called WOGS in the past. There was little discussion or reference to them - mainly Brits and Chinese were featured.

Mohanlal Mistry

Interesting museum but don't think worth paying $14,

Winston Ng

An amazing place, all the exhibition was carefully mounted, every detail has a meaning. I wish in the future it has more presence of Latin America immigrants.

Tan Kalvin

I never saw an Indian museum give so much respect to the Mahatma Gandhi

Wolf Damschitz

Really well curated and cosy musuem! The staff were also really friendly. An exception to that was the man at the coffee counter! The British Migrant and Ghandi exhibitions were well laid out and sensitive to their topics, whilst still effectively communicating in-depth information.

Sunis the Explorer

Wait time

Warwick Sellens

Very informative and interesting place to visit, we listen in on the tour conducted by Mohamid, which concentrated on introduction of camels to Australia, now as direct result of this there are many thousands of camels. Which is something we did not know, prior to the visit.

Jake Mullane

Informative and interesting about Australia's immigration history.

Jeffrie Trika

Good exhibits, worth your time to visit.

Brad Lyons

Was a good experience a unique insight into our country’s history and development. A lot of interactive displays but i feel I personally would have learnt more and had a better understanding with a guided tour. The building it self is something to be admired from an architectural and craftsmanship’s view point. It might be/ I’m sure it is the bogan in me but I didn’t get the Art exhibition. Should be on the school curriculum.

Richard Stokes

Incredible place to visit! They've put a lot of effort into curating this. Really interesting information and exhibits. Not too busy unless you get a school group coming through. Some great interactive pieces. Multiple levels, but elevator if you can't take stairs. Such a beautiful old building. Recommend to visit, especially if you have a concession card and can get in for free.

Yerim Han

A fascinating museum on everything about our migrant history both good and ugly and housed in a great building. Plus a computer area where you can search your own family history..

Elaine Evans

This museum faces up to some of the outdated thinking which drive Australia's attitude to potential (voluntary) new arrivals and its treatment of aborigines. Visitors need to be philosophical and accept that whilst many of the statements made in earlier eras are unacceptable today they were a reflection of those times.

Alannah Fehring

Very interesting building, lots of interesting information

Shatha R

Fascinating exhibition - should be compulsory viewing for all high school students, to help them understand the racist history which underlies much of modern Australian politics.

James Woods

A nice place - very convenient to skim in 10-15 minutes in case one is around or doing quick tourist site-hopping

Rob Jordan

If you would like to know how Melbourne started this is the place to visit

Bela Kapoor

A comprehensive and bracing look at Australia's checkered history on immigration

Jivtesh Singh

CafeLeon 350 flinders street call in on your way to the museum or returning. All day Breakfasts Smoothies Lunches Coffee Sandwiches specials $10.00 with small coffe Cakes Soft drinks Ice coffee Just mention the museum and 50 cents off your coffee purchase See you soon

Rohit Revo

Been there lots of times. Always something different to see, and the normal museum is fantastic. Free entry for seniors which is a bonus. Takes a few visits to see most.

Allen Shayanmanesh

It is goid place to visit. And understand what multiculturalism means. A qonderful place that tell you Australia is one of the most multicultural countries

Stephie Claridge

We went with a Myki explorer coupon and had low expectations, they were met and exceed with a large number of exhibits showing the opening to diversity of Australia's immigration history. the only issue is we didn't budget enough time for the place.

Hazel Griffiths

i really liked the free animal cards and the rain forest section with and the reason i enjoyed the card is because i played chess with them

Jen Butt

Needs a restroom!!! People are waiting plus a small restaurant next to it and will no restroom. Ughhh

Kerbray

The Immigration Museum was interesting, and the museum spans over three floors. We only found the second floor to really talk about the immigration to Australia over the last few hundred years, with the other two floors have less interesting exhibits, in our opinion. Some of the immigration stories were interesting and we enjoyed the historical accounts. Unfortunately the top floor just wasn't what we were expecting.

Ruwi W

One of the must see in my opinion; a lot of ineresting information, creative presentation and lovely exhibitions.

Nellerichal Sreeju

Absolutely worth the visit. Concession entry is free. Exhibits are always changing and very interesting. A worthy museum for the story of how immigration has shaped and enriched Australia.

Babar Mumtaz

Pretty nice space, the Aotearoa was OK, needed a screen and better PA though.

Craig Fillingham

Historic place. A must go if you're in town especially if you're international!

Atlana Yoon Jiwon

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon with the family. Lots to see and do, but not so much it takes the whole day. Try it out during the coming school holidays, you won't be disappointed.

Ibrahim El Badawi

A great educational and inspiring place! I’ve been to “Identity: yours, mine, ours ” exhibition in Level 2 and it was truly creative in approaching the whole identity issue through the lens of personal stories and an informative review of Australia’s history and its struggle with identity! The museum also hosts an exhibition about Ramadan - the holy month for Muslim! I found it educational and beautiful!

Thamarai Selvi

A fantastic detailed and emotional history of immigration to Melbourne, Victoria, and Australia as a whole. The museum really makes you think about and empathise people who emigrate and poses difficult questions of the visitor. Is spent 2hrs there, but could have spent longer.

Kaustubh Vadher

As a tourist in Melbourne wanting to explore the history of Australia as a country and how it became one of the most diverse countries in the world, this museum is the right place to be at. The museum offers a brilliant insight to the history of immigrants and how it all began. There are amazing arts at display, a beautiful historical screening depicting the stories of millions of immigrants during the world war or post war and modern times. The museum offers mind blowing resemblance of many cultures that were brought in Australia by the immigrants and how it shaped the Australia we all know of today. A must place for explorers and curious minds.

Ellie Myhill

Worth visiting, very educational and well presented with friendly staff and service

Gabriel Quintero

Great museum about Australia's immigration history.

Clair Melling

Beautiful places to learn about the history of Australian migration

Palitha Jagathpriya

A good clear explanation into Australias past and how immigration built Australia. $15 adult entrance fee. Expect a 2-3 trip if you take the time to read. Only a few interactive experiences. Mainly text and artifacts.

Jessica Koroleva

The drably titled museum may deter the casual explorer but is the history of the coming together of Australia's wide-ranging spectrum of race and culture presented comprehensively and enchantingly? It is difficult to tell. I visited the museum for the Love event.

Carol Daniela Alonso Gonzalez

Lots of interesting stuff. You'll need a few hours.

Kiran Prathapani

Great place to visit and acquire knowledge

Trebs Thompson

A really inspiring place. I don't know how did I get the idea to go here after hopping off the City Circle Tram. I just went up to the top floor. I am then amazed with what I saw. When I first visited the museum it was AFL Finals season so I saw an exhibition about Diversity in football. About AFLW and immigrants winning with their teams. I enjoyed the exhibition. The rest of the exhibition really make this former Customs House regal. It is indeed immigrants that make Australia a shining beacon, a treasure for the world.

Jean

Entry fee is $15 unless you are eligible for some form of concession. The exhibitions are not very extensive but are comprehensive enough. This is a good place to learn about the development of immigration policies in Australia. Until relatively recently, the policies were highly racist and discriminatory against people of non-European descent, particularly the Chinese. Interesting to find out more about the lives of the earliest immigrants.

Chris Turner

So much to learn and take home with you.A must see place if you love history and discovering the journey of australia and its diverse culture. Love the ambience of its setup and easy guide highly recommended to all.

Justin Ng

Awesome time spend. Took me back in history.

the convict

The staff is very kind and they have a lot of objects and history to present.

Suvendu Das

Good place for historians interested in life of people with immigration background. Nothing much spectacular like other museums in Melbourne. Definitely not enjoyable for kids younger than high school. Enthusiastic readers can really find great deals about human emotions and reason why people migrate and how Australia culture was built up. It definitely a must visit for people with reading habits and don't mind too much academy.

Clarissa Rafadhita

little bit boring

Deirdre Simpson

Nice museum with well done displays

Simon Gusah jnr

Good museum, a bit interactive and educational, also free to concession students! Spent about 1-2 hours walking about and watching videos and examining different artifacts, while learning about the history of immigration in Australia (which was fairly more racist and discriminating than I first thought). It's worth a trip.

Mette Sofie Eliseussen

This place is an amazing place if you want to know the immegration history of Victoria!! Photos are taken in the museum!!

Tim Clifton-Wright

Permanent exhibition is very enlightening, especially for a country and city so built and influenced by modern immigration. Temporary exhibition on adulthood was surprisingly earnest and cathartic. Definitely worth a visit!

Shelly Johnson

Brilliant museum! Very informative. Balanced exhibition, very engaging. Worth going if you want to learn about the history of Australia.

John Zupancic

A little pricey for admission, and I am visually impaired, so there was way too much reading for me. None the less, there was a lot of fascinating history as well as information on ongoing campaigns for equality and refugees.

Hana Kamila Fauziyah

Very informative museum that is presented extremely well. Must see for every citizen.

Raghad Habash

Beautiful old building, learning about our history. Very helpful staff.

beta subakti n

A historic museum with lots of rich history and many experiences

Mark Aidan

Not so exciting for little kids though but worth visiting

Naj

Great museum. Very interesting

Animesh Naskar

Good place. The exhibition about Gandhi is informative and standard. But how did Gandhi became an immigrant eventually?

Robyn-Maree Penny

Nice museum. Cool story telling, but not so many things to actually see.

albert nicholas

Surprisingly insightful museum. As an immigrant I would recommend it to people who want to get some perspective on what people endure in the process.

Natalie Galloro

Visited the Immigration Museum in April 2021 and was pleasantly surprised with the pure beauty of this place. I believe it is a hidden gem in Melbourne! …

Andy Pudmenzky

First time to the immigration museum, a wonderful space and really enjoyed the experience :)

I like to move it!

Very well curated Museum. One is able to have a pleasant time in the cafe, read, or just chill in a comfortable, well appointed quiet room.

Artem

Interesting little museum about the history of Australia through the lens of stories of immigration to the country. A bit on the expensive side of you're not a student.

Sneha Vaidya

A $15 entrance fee was worth the visit. India's father and most revered leader Gandhiji's exhibits intrigued the patriotism in all visitors. One could educate themselves of Australia's varied culture caused over a period of time due to Immigrants. An informative centre to know what made Australia.

Carmel Powell

An amazing experience, good research library. Clean and well maintained facilities a must for all Australians. Quaint Cafe and amazing audio visuals from time to time.

Shesh Kumar

Really good, weird pc non pc balance but really makes you think, thank you :)

Milena Siemering

This is an interesting museum, it is a little confusing on where you should go but once you know where to go you can spend around 4 hours here. The history on the immigration process through the history of Australia is a difficult subject for some and this seems to handle it very well. I think it could do more as it could feel a little boring for some younger people. There could be more interactive sections with tablets or touch screens for children. It is a good museum and is a must see if you are in the area.

Dr Fleetles

Interestingly more children's crafts than before quite liked the quietness of it

John Scott

Was lovely some items hard to see but mostly beautifully displayed

Abdullah Maghram

Cool, realistic, informative

Manos Koukourakis

I expected an informative exhibition on immigration to Australia. However, only 1/3 of the museum focuses on immigration and the exhibition lacks any details.

Shabbir Raza

Really stoked that the city has a place like this where people can come to celebrate the diverse cultures in Melbourne and educate themselves about how colonization still affects people and places today. An eye opening experience, a must go to for locals and travelers alike

Jeff Pan

I visited when they had the LOVE exhibition. The exhibition itself was very touching and very immersive with some very heartwarming stories as well as ones that made me tear up. Also many good photo opportunities with the cool neon signs that have up for the exhibit. I have not visited this museum whilst it was not showcasing this exhibition so I cannot give valid feedback on that aspect of it.

Norm Williamson

Awesome and so much integrative fun!

Timothy Ng

A fantastic insight into Immigrants arrival into Victoria over different decades and different cultures. Only letdown was that we were unable to access the records of our family from UK in 1952.

Ralph Lange

We were made to feel as unwelcome as the immigrants they displayed in the museum, firstly by refusing me (as a teacher) entry with my students as I didn't have a "teacher's card", which doesn't exist for ESL teachers, and refused to accept my teaching certificate as proof, nor the fact that I had students with me (all with student cards from my institute). Both members of staff we spoke to were belligerent, and wasted precious excursion time (over ten minutes of making us feel like we'd made a mistake, even after we showed them on the website that it mentions teachers are allowed to enter with their students for free, and after making a prior booking).

David Walker

I wish I had left a bit more time to visit here! All of the exhibits are really beautifully put together so it's a pleasure to spend a couple of hours wandering through. The love exhibit was awesome, I found it really moving and cried about four times. The mix of audio and visual was great and there's something about wearing headphones that makes you feel like you're the only person in the room.

Francois Marks

It's worth it if you read all the information available. If you just skip through it then it will be a very short visit.

Minzy Kang

A really nice museum. You can get some knowledge about the immigrants to Australia. Closes by 5pm,and you need 1.5hrs to see it.

Christine Downing

Insightful, educative and interactive. It spreads more awareness against racism and discrimination. Good place ????

Kurleigh Martin

Best place to get a glimpse at the Immigration history of Australia.

Sandra Stanton

Interesting but a little underwhelming. Amazing building.

Stanley Chung

Very interesting. Lots to see. Need at least a couple of visits. Will go again

Andrew McKinnon

Pretty good. Shows immigration during European Australia and really good on Australian policy and thinking during the times. Loses a star as they couldn’t done more with what immigrants brought to the country.

Katie J

Quite small over two floors. Interesting but started getting repetitive. Not sure why they had a big exhibition on gandi which was loosely tied into immigration because he spent ~20 years in South Africa. Would have preferred more on examples of contributions to Australia by immigrants to Australia. This is a great introductory Museum to anyone new to Australia and particularly anyone with kids. It explains the history behind how Australia became what it is today and has some interactive exhibits for kids. Two to three hours is likely enough time at the museum.

kelvin bulushi

Not interactive enough and very wordy. Expect to have to read a lot. Kind of like Wikipedia in front of you.

Sarah Bridget Freeman

Interesting museum abouts how immigrants have been treated in Australia

pavan kotehal

I say that it's just amazing and the stuff out there is fantastic and they treat us with respect

Adam Winston

Surprisingly interesting. Great opening lecture about the history of the first settlers of Melbourne. Good for tourist from outside of Australia i guess. We found here the short history brief that we searched for in every other museum. Good guide. The best part was the lecture, the exhibitions were ok.

Amy Hatch

Very interesting and informative museum. Worth a visit

Andy Fodor

I liked the book that says : Don’t go back where you came from ????

Angela Stott

I went in on the off chance they contained records of the Europeans who came over in the 50's... and they Did!. Found LOTS of interesting information about when my parents came over, the ship they came on, where they settled... thank you and the National Archives for gathering, keeping and digitising all this information.

Christopher E. Thenadi

Nice place to go and learn about history of Melbourne.

Joseph Laundy

Learn all about the immigration and aboriginal culture! The middle Hall is breathtaking! A worthy place for a study tour!

Myra Scholze

Spent close to two hours in the Love exhibit. It is amazing! So well done and touching, and showcases a wide variety of people and relationships. I rarely participate in audio tours, but I really enjoyed this one, both for the music and the spoken stories.

Edison Mok

Great tour of Australia and it's immigrants history. Too bad it didn't go much into the early settlement part by the British invasion. However immigration in other States wasn't mentioned much in there. Overall it was brief and short. I guess Australia need more history to make it worth it. The videos were great but would rather see more artefact from Australia migrats.

Us

Very educational with lots of interesting facts, not shying away from painful truths. Loved the interactive stands. Spent 2 hours there but could easily have been more, if we had had more time. Would visit again when I'm next in Melbourne.

Sylvia Tourstein

Immigration Museum Melbourne ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ $15 for Adults, Free for Kids & Concession (Aussie senior card). Smaller museum, 2 floors in a beautiful marble building outline of interesting history for the last 150 years. This is the third and permanent building on this land as it was the former immigration office. Learn about discrimination laws coming to help those who’d already been here and couldn’t become citizens. Sit and watch the short movie about why people came here. Really thought provoking.

Joey

Beautiful building, but expected to see more exciting things.

3D Virtual Tours Pty Ltd

Love coming here when im in Melbourne

Vicki Cunningham

Weekend

Ranil Sampathge

A wonderful museum and a wonderful building. The museum has a little shop, cafe and garden for visitors to enjoy and as a student I had free entry. Greatly enjoyed the temporary exhibitions too.

Daine Marley

Excellent comprehensive accessible history of immigration in Australia.

Wendy Anastasi

Entry fee is $15 unless you are eligible for some form of concession. The exhibitions are not very extensive but are comprehensive enough. This is a good place to learn about the development of immigration policies in Australia. Until relatively recently, the policies were highly racist and discriminatory against people of non-European descent, particularly the Chinese. Interesting to find out more about the lives of the earliest immigrants.

Lois Boxill

It could get boring if you're not into this kind of thing and kids would snooze. For us that love learning about the past there is alot to see and read and it is very interesting and well laid out.

Yogi Bhatia

Another fantastic piece of this city and within the wonderful Museum Victoria family. Regular collection is fantastic then they have excellent exhibitions. Building and courtyard fantastic and adds to the feel. Must go.

Adrian E.

Pretty place to visit, to know the history of Melbourne. I would suggest a tour with Vimala who is the guide of the museum.

Alex Zhou

You have to see it. Wonderful place

Nakul pisolkar

Australia has a long history of Immigration and this museum has some great exhibits which showcase why people have moved to this country and how their journey’s have been and have shaped the culture of Australia as a nation. As many as 9 Million people have immigrated to Australia since 1788 when the first fleet arrived in Sydney. Definitely worth checking if you are history buff and want to know more about Immigration to Australia. It’s located in a beautiful building which use to be a customs house till 1960’s.

YANETH ORELLANA

Concession tickets are free! A must see for international students in Melbourne

Catherine Croft

Really interesting. Great stories are told to make you understand the changes and implications of immigration in Australia.

Abhigo

Exhibition is both entertaining and informative. Small entry fee.

Shawn D'Souza

Half of the exhibits were out of order / awaiting repair. The ones that were working were great.

owen church

Great but hard to find the assistance we needed when we needed it as the help desk was unmanned for +/- an hour.

Haiying Shi

Friendly staff and fascinating exhibits. Hear John Howard saying "We will choose who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come." What a mean uncaring attitude. It breaks the international treaty on refugees seeking protection, of which this country is a supporter.

Al “Al Suave” Suave

Fascinating and it teaches you a lot about immigration life in Australia. The exhibits are very well thought out and a really diverse subject matter.

Dania Hawat

Very good small but super interesting. I'm not a big museum fan but this one is great kept me indoors for 3.5 hours on a summers day. Great exhibition on what migrants are doing in Melbourne today. Love the Chinese migration exhibition explained alot.

Thomas Kanze

Excellent museum focusing on a topic that many find uncomfortable.

Dimitri Pikos

Small exhibitions and the boat has gone. Bit expensive for what it is being an expat from UK thought it might be interesting but let down. Thank god my wife got students t discount otherwise would have cost a pretty penny.

Jay Mo

An interesting and interactive museum that takes you through the history of integration in a country that was made great by it.

Mathew Walls

I enjoyed the visit here, very informative.

Kim Mcclounan

Interesting. We were immigrants in the 60's

Shailesh Nikam

Gone too arty in recent times. Needs more displays related directly to immigration.

John Adamowski

Extremely informative, well planned out.

yemisi olonoh

Some interesting exhibits but not sure I would go there without annual museum pass.

Cranbourne English Tuition

What a wonderful asset to Melbourne! A great opportunity to learn about other cultures in our melting pot city. Some really relatable sentiments conveyed, though too preachy towards the end even for this child of immigrants and of ethnic origin. Go and visit though, it is announcing experience.

Golf Day

It is very educational tour to understand the evolution of Australian history.

Cindy Si

Fascinating. Went to see the tattoo exhibitions currently showing - combining stunning photography, insightful video and text. Then explored the other exhibitions looking at the history of immigration and identity. Enlightening and stimulating.

Christopher McAvaney

Free for concession card holders. Its ok and good to see if you haven't been, but it dosent go into deep detail about immigration.

Denny Daud

What a beautiful building! that in itself wowed me

Barbara Rodrigues Pereira

A brilliant museum, so much to see: pictures, video, audio - amazing and very interesting. Worth the entry fee.

David Hinds

Interesting displays in an elegant building.

J. Simo

Joshua Brunacci

A very good place to know more about Melbourne history.

Elise Melican

Wonderful place, amazing stories but unfortunately cranky lady spoilt the day (Pat).

Cenakhoa Nguyen

Thank you for reminding me.I should visit again.Love that place.I will post a photo on Instagram.

Clive Cooper

Great place to feel that our good days are ahead. Place to feel - how Australia became more human place. It will feel the agony of the world and make you more accommodating.

Don Tadixz

This is undoubtedly the most poignant, relevant and educational museum I have visited. It is full of wonderful stories that you should hear.

ZLT

Lacks a sense of itself. Doesn't portray the real experiences of migrants. Mostly because it's trying to do too much outside it's mission

Luke Manduca

Such an insightful, interesting history and perspective on the history of Melbourne and Australia as a whole. Highly recommend!

Jessie Upward

I went to see the Love exhibition, which was very well made. They gave you little iPods with text, photo and audio files for each exhibit, including headphones. In the other rooms are different immigration exhibits that give a good insight in the history of Australia. I love the heaps of photos and videos and artefacts displayed. Lots of seating possibilities. There were toilets and a small but beautiful museum shop that serves coffee. Adult admission is $15, students are free (if you can show your student ID or I.e. an email from your school with your name etc.). Would definitely recommend.

Rafael阿飛

Serenity and self guided tour

Aldo Carbotti

Great museum to spend a few hours, very interesting and really helpful staff ,alot of interactive displays

David Muir

Two-hour tour in the museum, lovely building and educated, know more about the immigrant history of the country.

Kevin Viereck

Staff was so delightful! Extremely knowledgeable and very welcoming. The museum as such is a bit different to a normal museum, never the less a lot to read and dive into, recommend!

Phil Pike

Beautiful place. So much to learn there.

Tasha

A good place for ALL Australians to visit and learn about our culture and history.

Hiroshin takumi

a super place to visit well laid out and informative a true flavour of Australian history

Scarlett McLean

I spent a brilliant afternoon here. The guided tour gives you a good idea about the history of the building itself. It's very well curated and sensitively addresses the issue of immigration. Highly recommend it!

Rebecca Fawcett

I loved the 'Love' exhibition. It was highly interactive and engaging. This is a beautiful way to present new exhibits.

S Thomas

Great way 2 spend the afternoon.

Maria Jose Gr

A must visit place in Melbourne to better understand the past and the present, especially for immigrants and international students

Edith HD

Curious and interesting museum about the Australian immigration. Pretty mind-blowing with a great cheerful staff. Recommended

Steve Jones

Beautiful experience, stories by immigrants around the world well documented and interactive

Nicholas Whitely

Pulls on the heart strings. Favorite was LOVE exhibit on 1st floor. Outstanding. The love poet on 2nd floor similarly pulling the heart strings. Not much love in this modern age so go experince some! For lovers new and old.

G C

What a beautiful and informative place. Free for students so make sure to bring your student card. Also free WiFi within the Museum.

Graham Rodda

You can really feel the hardships of immigrants and proud australians. 4 stars because computer equipment has some glitches.

Zinhan Win

The story of migrants arriving in Australia is a very important Australian story with an enormous scope. This museum barely touches on the multitude of cultures and customs that have found their way down under. Seeing the stories of Scottish immigration was of particular interest - as it is part of my heritage. Och Aye! Worth a look!

Adrian Goslett

This felt like a must see. Very well presented history of immigration in a beautiful old building. Staff are really helpful! Check it out.

Carrie Warren-Wandke

Surprisingly, I liked this place quite a lot. Learnt about immigration into Australia, and the history of our policies and changes that occurred to the Australian population. I also liked the exhibit on the Japanese Tattoos, and Identity.

Ciarán O'Driscoll-Collins

Good history will be told for all the visitor, the ambiance is such a calming ind

Ahmed ElAssy

We went here during the NZ festival . Lots of extra events . I think it would be a lot quieter without this.

Samsujeevan Joy

Worth the visit. The building itself is fantastic also.

Hudson Cooke

Filled with so much interesting information! Thanks for the free tour!

Yan 20

A very educational and delightful experience. Dedicate a good two hours if you are visiting this museum.

meh cho

I went there on an open day and let's just say I'm glad I didn't pay to enter... it was okay.

Oscar Riches

It's good to know about immigrants in Australia. Nicely architect designed.

Vojtech

A must for all Australians. It explains the origins of modern Australia. Every Australian bar First Nation should visit this place to understand who they are.

Ruby Faith

Place to visit if you are in Melbourne. Museum is very close to Tram stop 1 at Flinders street. Admission fee is reasonable.

saurav tiwari

A walk through takes somewhere between 90 minutes and 2 hours. I think I expected a bit more of the stories of immigrants who came here. You get a good gist for how racist the government used to be after about 15 minutes here, so the tour's impact peters off as it rolls on. I mostly wish it went more in depth.

Mîñt Møçhå

1st time at the Immigration museum. Well worth a visit!!????????????????????

Kevin

We came for the Generations exhibition a couple of weeks ago, but honestly the existing exhibits in the museum were more interesting than the event itself. Highly recommend learning some history from here, it’s a real eye opener

saichaitanya chandu

A wonderfully immersive experience. Whether you are a tourist or a local this is a must do

Paul Aitkenhead

Fascinating museum. Family friendly. Very fun

Eduardo

I took my parents there on a Monday morning, and we spent 2.5 hours enjoying the exhibits. We liked how the stories of those immigrants were told, especially the hardships they experienced on their journey to Melbourne. It is a nice museum that you don't want to miss if you are also considering migration.

MandK Venn (Rhomez&AshliBassBaby)

Spent a sunday afternoon...good way to learn about australia.

Fabio Santo

Staff was very firiendly and helpful!! Beautiful place, a lot of history and good information, price is fine, better if you get a combo with a workshop or something. I went to a cocktail one which was pretty fun and night entry to the museum on a Friday. Totally recommend. Plus there was some food/drink stalls at the garden and live music! Great combo experience !!!

Vince Ramos

Very interesting and important museum!

Cass Cassidy

Loved the little library with some beautiful books and interesting videos. My toddler danced along with some of the videos, and then we went and had a lovely chai latte at the cafe there and browsed the shop. The gardens, though small, are also quite nice, with a memorial water feature which was very nice, some herbs in planter boxes and little paths and stairs.

Malwina Teodorczak

Looks like a fantastic place for holding events! Went past whilst it was being set up for a party...

Allen

A true slice of Melbournes heart and a more authentic building within our lovely CBD.

Inessa Koreshkova

Best experience ever in Melbourne, I loved this museum, as an immigrant, I learned a lot about immigration history in Australia

Jet Yiu

Fascinating history of Australian immigration - in a very well presented exhibition. Go see

Steph

Good for historians, others may find this place boring.

John Torcasio

Plan to spend all day. There is tons of information

Miz Jolly

One place that you can't miss in Australia, free for students.

Robert Mason

Amazing history of migration. Very moving. Very interesting.

Doc Ussher

Went in with an open mind but found it not real interesting. And what's with all the people on their signs having their mouths open? Those signs wouldn't be out of place on the front of a haunted house amusement park ride.

Daniel Cocking

Spectacular building housing an important part of history with great engaging displays. Fantastic educational resource for school groups, and the temporary exhibitions are excellently curated and displayed.

Steve Grantham

So cool! If you're into learning about immigration movement of people and social justice and activism you'll probably want to visit. It's an interesting museum that does challenge you and does leave you with interesting opinions/critiques but nonetheless good.

Darren De Banks

Recommended for any visiting tourists. Has a great amount of information across 3 levels. Give yourself around 2 hours here

THE PENTAGRAM

Worthwhile place to visit, which takes 1-2 hours.

Anthony Ronald

It is a shame that it took me so long to get into this place. Every Melbournian should be visiting this place at least once. They also have regular international exhibition happening here! I went for the love exhibition on the valentines day. Also there was Khalil Gibran on the same day!

Old Man Jed

Not very big. Interesting sometimes

Dennis McDaid

I really enjoy going to the Immigration Centre. The building is beautiful and there is always something new being displayed. And to have my grandparents name on a wall is a treasure and a reflection of the long hard journey of migrating to Australia.

Taylar W

I ventured across Immigration Museum in Flinders Street across from Yarra River and it was an emotional experience reading through the immigration experience in Australia to modern times. The museum houses 3 levels of exhibitions focused around Australian historical records of immigration progression and living experiences. The stories were very moving and poignant, not to mention very enriching. Highly recommended!

Eduard Arias León

Thoroughly enjoyed this Museum. It was well set out and very interesting.

廣瀬華子

Awesome place

Karl Baratheon

As a new migrate, I love to visit this museum primarily displaying Australia's immigration history, amazing to know Immigration Discovery Centre where people can search for their roots and the Tribute Garden which honours immigrants from more than 90 countries. So lucky to get the chance to see tattoo show. Our Bodies, Our Voices, Our Marks – a suite of exhibitions and experiences that explore the art of tattoo, alongside themes of identity, self-expression, culture and community. "Curating under the Our Bodies, Our Voices, Our Marks umbrella has been a really wonderful challenge to extend the ideas offered by two blockbuster shows . Through photographs taken in the studio and on location in Samoa, curator Takahiro Kitamura showcases the work of traditional tatau (tattoo) masters alongside that of younger practitioners and artists who are adopting tatau's motifs and styles for new media and art forms. breaking photographic exhibition by Kip Fulbeck and Takahiro Kitamura, they explore the rich history of traditional Japanese tattoo culture and its influence on modern tattoo practice. Although tattooing is largely seen as an underground activity in Japan, it has persevered and is now internationally renowned for its artistry, lineage, historic symbolism. The exhibition explores the beauty of tatau as well as the deep significances of the art form, practised for thousands of years.

Nice place to visit to understand migration history

Ronald Roberts

Victorians come from more than 200 countries, speak 260 languages and dialects and follow 135 religious faiths. Why do people leave their countries of birth to live here? What is their experience in their new country? How do communities adapt to new arrivals? These are the questions that the Immigration Museum poses. Expect a thought-provoking experience filled with stories that are sometimes sad, sometimes funny, but always compelling. And somewhere within, you'll find your own story. In 1998, the Immigration Museum opened in the beautifully restored Old Customs House. As the former administrative centre of Melbourne's immigration and customs, it is the perfect home for a museum filled with the real stories of people who have migrated to Victoria. Today, you'll find two floors of exhibition galleries that house temporary and permanent exhibitions. Several times a year in the Festival Courtyard we host joyous community festivals that are alive with food, music and culture. The Immigration Discovery Centre is the perfect place to start your genealogical research, while the Tribute Garden is a beautiful sanctuary that honours immigrants from over 90 countries. The Immigration Museum collaborates with culturally and linguistically diverse communities to explore, document and present stories and experiences of immigration and cultural diversity in Victoria.

Tasmanian Devil

Interesting & varied displays on immigration in Victoria. The "Perseverance" exhibit on Japanese tattoo culture was very well put together & highly recommended, runs until October.

Celine Bonnaire

A must see when you're in Melbourne. Australia has been shaped by immigration policy, and this museum does a great job of showing where we've come from, where we've fallen short, and how we can do better. Give yourself a couple of hours. The Japanese tattoo exhibit was excellent.

Nathan Fernandez

A most interesting museum. Amazing collection of historical documents and information.

D Rodgers

The exhibitions that were on when I went were so informative and expressive. History spoken in an artistic way is what makes Melbourne so so special to me. Places like this portray how much the city has an appreciation for buy the history and the arts. Depicts the result of colonialism so effectively.

GojiTool

Very nice price to access this beautiful museum, awesome exhibition.. Will come back for sure!

Holly Regan

very friendly and helpful workers and super informative.

Christos Dimopoulos

Diverse, interesting and detailed displays. This historical old Customs building is in excellent condition.

You will find a piece of yourself here no matter when you are your ancestors landed here.

Guru Prasad

Interesting stories. Great building.

George Michaelson

Some very confronting exhibits, but well worth the visit.

Richard Mah

Nice Museum. They have made maximum from kind of "boring" theme. Also small library and cafe with souvenir shop inside.

Phi Nguyen

We found the immigration museum stale, and lacking interactive installations. Very passive overall. We were quite surprised. Photos in the visiting tattoo exhibition were repetitive. Paying aud15 for this was not what we expected.

Theo Tedjasasmita

Super detailed and interesting historical description of Australia's migrant past. I highly appreciated the discussion it prompted about identity and what it means to be someone in a globalizing world. A must visit for those interested in expanding their social horizons.

John Jones

Lots of great exhibits about the history of Melbourne. Good way to spend half a Saturday. Educational and not too big. Friendly staff and interesting displays.

Romi rahman

Great history and temporada expositions. Love and gilbrain

Vishal Singh Pawar

This museum explain what makes Australia diverse and multicultural

Thorsten Schaeff

Overrated. The information is comprehensive but not detailed enough. It should only charge 5 - 8 dollars per person.

Itzel Zaragoza

If you're interested to know the history, you can visit here

Andrew Liew

Fabulous African Festival. So well presented.

Rahul Kisku

Mostly focused on dance activities and people. The gallery actually didn't have any sorts of objects or significant memorabilia

Gary Groeneweg

Must visit place in Melbourne to know the history oh immigrants

Good Morning

Informative friendly super efficient service

leon bramich

Nice place to visit to understand about Immigration history. I like video presentation about how people feel akward at the beginning but later on their reactions change as they settle in Australia.

Jonathan Steffanoni

Not worth it, absolutely boring!!! They had a large ship in there earlier which was the only interesting thing about this place now they don’t even have that. Don’t waste your money.

Rachel Bloem

All the staff are really nice, I'd encourage you to have a chat about the exhibitions if you get a chance as they would have more insights for you to find out! Other than that, a brilliant place with awesome exhibitions

Leah LIAKOS

Very cool experience. Great tech fusion in the exhibits. Can't wait to visit again.

Loui Pye

Great museum. We'd been meaning to visit for ages and definitely glad we did. So many really interesting and interactive exhibits.

Jason Renshaw

Eye opening.

Raja Yogam

Love this place .... makes you imagine as to how a nation was built.

James Chin

Trove of history, ideas and perspectives. Could easily spend two or three day trips just absorbing all of the images and data.

Excellent, thought provoking display s. Free for concession holders.

Great place to check out Australian history of our migrants over the years.

Greg Rindel

Some nice informative exhibitions about the history of immigration to Australia, as well as some interactive activities and displays.

Andrew Gibbons

Very well laid out. It is free if you have a student ID card.

Brittnee Bali

Ideal for local school children to learn about tolerance and diversity. Not interesting for well travelled tourists. Lots of documents to read, which I do not find particularly enjoyable in a museum (put it online).

Alex

Lovely exhibitions and they update regularly so you never feel like you have seen it all.... Nice and friendly staff, and very clean environment

saastol tol

Poor presentation of the history of migration to Australia. For a city of our standard, the display is just not good enough. The only decent exhibition was on the Japanese body tattoos ; provided if you are interested in body art. We found nothing interesting or stimulating in this museum. Waste of time and money.

Kieran Isherwood

Good ambience on the new exhibition on tattoos. Informative and focuses on all ethnicities and how all people played an important role in the shaping of Australia.

Adam Liang

Very interesting. And of course the free animal cards really pleases the kids. Fun for all the family..

Sharan

Informative, relatable exhibits

Fel I

Relics, artefacts, and interactive displays help bring to life the troubled history of Australia's immigration policies. Situated within a historic customs building, the Immigration Museum explores immigration history and celebrates our multicultural society. Well worth a visit.

JK B

Wow! Finally a museum that understands that space and word economy are key elements of effective communication. I absolutely loved the Gandhi exhibit - spacious, interactive and chronological, like a well crafted story. I felt like I could access Gandhi the man turned Mahatma. The exhibit on identity was also very well done and provocative (in the best way possible) with the questions posed to visitors throughout. By interweaving well-posed questions and shared stories, visitors of the exhibit are prompted to consider, even briefly, that not only do they carry a story, but to consider the strands from which they continue to weave their own story and identity. On top of all of that, the welcome I received from the Aboriginal staff member at the front desk when I arrived, was the warmest I have ever received, period. I shall treasure this experience.

Diego Magnani

Great reading about the immigration to Australia via Victoria, great photos and memorabilia.

Brad Dunn (Brad)

Free basic admission or for a small fee can tour the entire museum. Great exhibits. Australia is quite the melting pot as we all know. Very interactive.

Hidden

I love the fact that it's free to come on here, and that I get to learn Chicco was originally a chocolate candy in the shape of a baby, to represent black babies. That some food companies can be racist or sell products that don't promote multiculturalism. I learn to appreciate other races and treat them with respect.

Jedd Dryden

amazing place....everyone should go there

Slade Yuille

Learn more about how people from all over the world came to be in Australia. Very informative and interactive

thuy hoa n

Free for students and children. Comprehensive and interesting look at a slice of Australia's history. Definitely worth an hour or two of your time. Tons worth seeing

Emily Poelina-Hunter

I just migrated myself to Australia - did expect more! It seems to be more a political statement than a museum.

Mehmet Karal

Great museum with really cool and interesting exhibitions. Friendly staff.

Tim R

People can forget where and how Australia and Melbourne have come to be. To see things from the past and resent and will remember the tattoo display even though I don't have any myself is awesome ray

Mark E. Brown

The kind of museum that seems like its been made by a couple of hours of googling, copying text directly off wikipedia with an injection of the 'whats your opinion' tweets from a breakfast tv show, and buying some meaningless reproduction trinkets off ebay. A complete and utter waste of time and money.

Damaso Humberto Campiolo Filho

Great atmosphere but Parking issues and congested corner

Michele Cane

So many interesting things. Like this place.

S Williams

The Immigration Museum is one of the best museum in Victoria. A place to reflect and learn about Australians migrant's stories.

Alexander Jakimcio

its always very interesting. My mum n g/parents came out as £10 poms.

As a Melbourne visiters we were able to have free excursion. That was made big difference. The guide stories were make all sence and helped us appreciate the museum. Without it it would be boring as. Dissapointed that the main historical hall was closed for reno? Too EXPENCIVE as well.

Abdul Samad Virk

Amazing look at the history of Australia. First imigrants..the settlers. Loved this and so affordable. Concessions are free!!

Noah Holm

Learned about tattoos and migration. Worth a visit.

Aakash Sharma

Fabulous, interesting and it does have changing exhibitions so it is worth revisiting. I saw exhibitions on tattoos, the artistry of Japanese tattoos and family origins of traditional tattoos.

Louise Titulaer

The museum is a bit small, but lots of interesting exhibit, spare at least 2hours. Will come back again next time.

John Dawson

It ws good because there were lots of artifacts and the building is just a lovely place to be in

Really interesting and thought provoking exhibitions

Danny Warren

Wonderful reflections on how all our different cultures contribute to the Australian way of life

Chandini Luchoo

Beautiful big building with lots of history

Margriet Palm

Learn about Australia immigration history while savouring the architecture of the historic Customs House. Great place for teens, tourists and Melbourne locals (Melbournites).

Robyn Tomkins

It was not what I expected. Too noisy and hot which made it uncomfortable and detracted from the exhibits, I loved the middle eastern exhibit, especially the portraits.

Angela Longworth

A good way to learn how many different ethnic groups of people coming to live in Australia.

Ben Haylock

Nice place for events, and for visiting too. The exhibits really made the history come to life!

Lucie Kanerova

Very informative but 'interview room' pretty depressing. Curation a little bit all over the place.

Karen Franke

Very interesting place just a pity there were so many school groups going through which ruined the experience. They were running and pushing so we left.

Carlos Fabian

What an interesting way to learn about the Australian immigrants. Hands on experience for kids... the ships, simulators are all too good. Highly recommend a visit.

Glad Catley

Great museum. Loved all the extra shows too.

James Russell

Nice museum with lots of information.

Jordan Lee

One of a kind museum which celebrates diversity and weaves a multicultural fabric that makes up Australia. The building is also an architectural gem, used to be the Customs House, which is has been positively reused for a significant purpose.

Laura Nicholas

Quite interesting. Good way to spend two hours or so.

Greg Cross

Lots of interesting stories, some sad ones

pkisok

Love this museum. Some immigrant stories were heartbreaking but they give us hope for a brighter future.

Maria

The building's architecture is beautiful and the exhibitions are straight to the point. The building is easy to navigate and has handicapped access. They hold a number of events and festivals, so make sure to check the site before heading over ????

L Anderson

The displays were excellent. They were very moving. The staff were extremely helpful.

Interesting exhibits, great old Customs House building, excellent gift shop.

Jeanne Seymour

Loved the recorded immigration interview sessions. So much have changed since, ????

Janusz Ostrycharz

Had a very pleasant experience at the museum yesterday with my 10 other senior friends. The staff were very welcoming with big smiles. Thank you also to the barista at the cafe who served me long black coffee that was extra hot and extra strong, upon my request. I really enjoyed that coffee. The museum visit was really worth it.

Manan Walia

Good for a short visit (2 hours is enough). Some interesting exhibits but a little too confrontational for my taste.

Beng Cheah

Friendly staff and information are presented very well.

Rajat Vanaik

Interesting history and a great exhibit

Alan Kent

Small place but so many things to see and experience.

Yuliya Huz

Quite informative and free for students!

Shai Habet

Nice place if you want to spend some time in Melbourne. Entry is free for students, staff is friendly and even if I'm not interested in Australia immigration, the exposition was quite good. You can expect to spend 2 good hours inside, and it's quite a kid/family friendly place. The only black point is that the shop inside the museum is not interesting.

Paul Allen

Great activity to any immigrant seeking to understand the state of immigration in aus

Kalhara Batuwana

A good display of all the different cultures in Melbourne Victoria and shows the diversity that we live in

Pauline

Great place to visit. When we were there they had a theme on the Chinese. Interesting.

sam tang

Some good exhibits ... some real eye-openers about our sad discriminatory policies of the past.

Pooja Nadig

Terrific place if you're into history and artefacts. A lovely building greatly historic, and nicely restored. I'm going to go again soon.

Jeff Jessup

Underwent transformation during the last 20 yrs using more of new technology.

Clever Bits

The most profound, museum experience I have ever had. If you truely want to educate yourself about Australia's diversity, I recommend this place

Tse Alexis

Staff were very helpful and polite. Displays were great spent 4hrs there and will go back again soon.

Zhen Xiang Leow

I liked the place because of the artifacts that are for show from all arround the world, when people started migrating to Australia. You can even find out what time people started migrating from various nationalities into Australia.

Alex Ander

This was a very interesting place to visit and learn quite a lot

Abdullah Kawser

No

Boston

The history and culture of whats behind what makes Melbourne great

Linda Ward

Went to the LOVE exhibition and it was undoubtedly a great experience! Definitely worth the lookout ????

Alicia Romero

If you want to know, how was Australia populated, without shifting through books and academic papers, go for atleast 2-3 hours in the museum.

Sam Ozzimo

Reduced to a trickle of former exhibits, with half a floor walked by in less than an hour, its not worth 15 $ entrance.

Ken H

Fantastic displays. Must see again to take in all exhibits.

david lucas

Great exhibitions and guides for informative walk throughs, with albeit confronting history

Nemo Lemo

"Immigration museum" and the story of immigration in Australia apparently started around 1830. Are you sure there was no immigration way before that date?

Kenneth D'souza

A great way to spend a few hours in the centre of Melbourne.

Dawn Morgan

Loved the exhibition about British immigration but the one about 'identify' was lame. Also it was a bit expensive

James Robinson

This museum can give you a brief but concise idea about Australia 's immigration policy & history.

bic

'Every one's identity is unique and precious' is the theme of immigration museum! Efforts were made to show Australia welcomes and respects all ethnicities and allows them to continue preserving their culture along with its own! Unity in diversity

Luke Habib

Excellent presentation and historical story. The story of Australia is painted accurately here.

Freya Clark

I was very surprised. I was just walking by and decided to check it out. The exhibitions were great and an eye opener on the history of immigration in Australia.

Anjli Bajwa

People who have wide variety of ethnicity live in Melbourne now. You learn the reason here.

aishwarya Z

Didn't like it. His name doesn't make sense since there is no connection to the immigration. There is more globalization information than actual australian history stuff.

Dez Rae

Cool but not worth $15 entrance.

Christian Woern

If you want to learn how immigration in Australia started and continued, this is the place to visit. The exposition provides necessary information, invites you to think differently about others and touches subjects about humans and the believes they have. At the day of my visit some artistic photos illustrate the tattoo culture mainly in Samoa and Japan.

aaron lepham

Very well made and interesting museum about Australian history of immigration

Nichole Day

Great museum, loved the Gandi exhibition allow 2.5hrs to explore

Kerrie Ormond

Overall good approach for many sensitive subjects around the history of immigration.

Sharni Edwards

There are tours at noon, highly recommended for people who want a chance to listen to basic English audio materials and to learn history of the museum neighborhood.

Patrícia Barros Viotto

Great to learn about how immigrants made up this country!

Reshma Hakim

Not my taste. Was pretty boring. I find it hard to believe it costs the same as the Melbourne Museum.

Chris Rogers

Immigration is such a huge part of Melbourne to the point where it was a joy to walk down the streets and hear so many different languages. This museum shows the hardships many immigrants face to get to Australia, as well as the reasons for which they do so. On top of awesome exhibits, the staff are great and are happy to chat, including about their own immigration story.

Hayden Clarke

Very informative. Gained more knowledge about some of the children I grew up with in Hadfield.

Alan Jalocha

Nice to explore but not really much to do.

todd sawyer

No wait

clifford worsley

Great place to learn more about Melbourne's past.

Keli Farrell

It's ok but we found it expensive and very old school museum

Rick Connell

Great Insight in to our immigrant history Real people stories Free with National Trust and maybe seniors card Great diverse display

PuppyGumDrop !

Lots of history and exhibits in a beautiful victorian customs house. Very engaging and informative. Encouraging for new migrants.

naama sitry

Really enjoyed a visit here. It is an interesting museum and the staff are fantastic. You can tell that all of the staff working there are academics of some sort who are passionate about history. They went out of their way to help my family and I print off records from the archives etc. the exhibitions are interesting, and well worth a visit. You will particularly find the museum interesting if you, like many victorians, have a migrant history in your lineage.

Tam Kendi

The staff were very helpful. I enjoyed the exhibitions very much.

Alireza Bahramzadeh (Ali_bahram)

Very interesting and important museum!

Craig Burnard

Cherie Harlow

Lovely staff and wonderful exhibitions. Thoroughly enjoyed this place. Food - there is a little cafe/souvenir store at the entrance. Toilets nice and clean. Parking - there is a Wilson car park on Flinders public transport easy to walk to from flinders too. There is a lift inside for those not wanting to walk the flights of stairs. Really enjoyed this place. The history and art is amazing.

Immigration Museum, It tells us how the immigrants from the different countries ended up in Australia, also how the Australia has been developing since the immigrants entered into this country every year!

Colin “Rockyb”

Wonderful museum very well laid out with lots of fascinating details. Well worth a visit.

Lesley Farrell

I like to visit the Immigration Museum every so often when there is a new exhibition being displayed. It's enjoyable for all ages though I do feel like younger children wouldn't appreciate it as much. Very interesting, worth the money and is a good place to add to your itinerary when in the CBD of Melbourne.

Thomas Vandeligt

One of the best places in Melbourne to get to know the past history and culture.

Brett BISHOP

Went on an excursion there, wasn’t much to see and do, perhaps it was only one section

Carlos Humphrey

A place everyone should visit. The architecture of the building is astounding and walking through the different areas you realise how important it is to remain humble and have empathy for every individual.

Marg CP

If you visit 5 places in Australia, this should be one of them. My favourites are the journeys that the immigrants had to carry out over the past few journeys. The old ship cabins make it all too real.

Andressa Margoto

It’s very big , although there was a level that had something that didn’t relate to immigrants and immigration

Rob Jonas-green

It doesn't have the resources to find records of ingredients that came in 1950-s in Melbourne

Hamza Haddour

Very good museum! A lot of resources and good and interesting information. Recommended it

Michael Godfrey

Marie Rawlinson

Very interesting exhibits describing the history of immigration into Melbourne & Victoria. OIf course, you have to be interested in the topic to get the most frmo the museum, but I spent a morning in there and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Oscar Harry

Good visit and excellent historical data.

Irvin Flaherty

Good place to learn about the history of immigrants in Melbourne and Australia

Paul Macallan

Great museum! Very educational!! My only little problem is I would prefer they used "gypsy" in quotes instead of just saying gypsy as a term by itself, to draw attention to the fact that it is a slur and its users intend for it to be read that way. By putting in quotes, you would treat it as a word being used by bigots/others (which it is) instead of treating it as the default word for romani/traveller peoples (which its not). It isnt a legitimate term and quotation marks would convey that. Not asking you to take it down, obviously. It's in the context of a historical bigotry exhibit, its necessary for education, just saying you should probably put quotes around it.

Marshia Nash

Really interesting, i learnt some stuff too

Matt Curran

This museum is amazing! It's worth the visit, 100%!

Hyunbae Jeon

JJ

Dollar 15 entry ticket for just the gallery. Ground floor is free that has 8 portraits

Barbara Goldsmith

This place is absolutely amazing. But they got rid of the best part last year, the ship exhibition that showed you how the convicts lived on the boats hundreds of years ago

Leonie Macnaughtan

Took my 18 yo grandson there & we spent hours reading about the history of immigration & viewing the collection of photos etc. The displays are wonderful & the coffee in the cafe was pretty good too.

Amirul Rasyid Lasiman

Very interesting and easy to spend a couple of hours here - thoughtfully deals with questions of identity.

Jennifer Crawford

The museum is very nice. However it felt that there is a lot of reading and less real historical stuff. Nevertheless, a lot can be learn about Australian immigration.

Guilherme Almada

Great place I’ve ever been to, 100% recommend . A variety of interesting history on migrants, which literally takes me to another level. Thumbs up

Nini W

its a great place but I had to go there with Sue Buckly. Shes a family report writer and be warned males.....shes is a man hater. My ex is a drug addict yet sue spent only a few minutes with this woman only observed her with the kids for a short period of time in her office space yet she walked me around the city with all the kids all whilst being well aware that I have osteo arthritus. She was trying her undermine my ability as a father and because ive got arthritus (which is a naturally degenerative disorder) she felt the kids would be best in an area with a heavily drug addiced woman. She has only daughters and does not do a fair report....again men be aware this woman is a man hater!!

Liona

One of the best places to visit to understand the people of Melbourne...

Well there’s nothing really inside, but it’s a good opportunity to take pictures outside, and that’s GB’s coat of arms

Dorothy Richards

Small but focussed collection of immigrant history with good exhibition space. Makes you think.

Bryant Chang

Been there once, and it was fun. I learnt some knowledge from here, and make me love this city more !! Also some facilities you even could pretend yourself as the immigrant staff to grant the people or not!! It quite fun !

Megan Ryan

Gorgeous historic building. Had a wonderful chat with one of the historians about Melbourne history and development. Highly recommend checking out the echo in the long room!

Liz Smith

Very interesting and nice. If you are a student you get free entry ????????

Maria Kemppinen

If you show the student card, free entry. It was a great museum! You MUST visit to understand the history of Australia!

aroosh sultana

A great place to learn about immigration, sometimes feel sad walking in it

Frederick Fenley

When researching inmigration history, there are ample resources at hand and staff to help. It is centrally located and open every day of the week. Great for not only adults but also children who are inquisitive about not their own roots but abundance of information ready for dissecting to learn about essential dates in Australian multicultural history.

William Cowan

Awesome things to see, experience and great customer service

Too many new things and nice coffee ☕

Martijn van de Kerkhof

Well worth a visit on a rainy day for anyone interested in Australia migration story.

This is an amazing place with so much to see and learn! Tatau: Marks of Polynesia was beautifully presented - they put a lot of work in this. You need to set aside a whole day to thoroughly explore what the Immigration Museum has to offer.

kiki kong

The place is still great to visit

Haris K

Super friendly staff, amazing place. Worth visiting it

Well organized and displayed of the history of imgrants from different countries in the World to Australia. Good place for young generation whose rooted from the migrant countries explore information about their ancestor' migration.

Jose Morales

Nice place to visit....but tickets are bit expensive.

A

A great way to learn about the people that came from other countries to help make Australia the wonderful place that it is. It has a lovely outside court yard to take a break in as well.

Douglas

The first floor gave a detailed overview of immigration and indigenous history. The plaques and interactive portions were interesting and well planned. Top floor in contrast was a more modern overview with sections dedicated to individuals and their personal thoughts on culture. I came away with a more in-depth undertanding. Very worthwhile (and excellent chai lattes). PSA: students free entry

Babs Pritchard

Only free for senior n student. Adult must pay .

Ralp Horlach

Best place for immigrants to know more about Australian History ????

An interesting place if you have an interest in immigration.

ByungYoon Jo

Awesome museum. Much more than one would expect!

Jake Kraweckyj

Visit the place.. Nothing to add. Really insightful, during my visit there was a special show about Gandhi which taught a lot. Even just the permanent part about immigration, integration, and growth is amazing.. Gives us world inhabitants a lot to think about.

Amy Ewison

Incredibly well designed displays that make you think, and challenge your own pre-conceptions about yourself and your heritage...

Ali Macfarlane

Much more interesting than one would think. If you or your ancestors have migrated to Australia, you need to visit this museum.

Rachelle El Hage

Interesting place to spend a couple hours - i personally liked that the top floor explores the individual stories of recent migrants and contemporary race relations, something we should all be more comfortable discussing in the current climate

annisa rizkytia

Went on a whim on a weekend and had an interesting time. Some good interactive exhibits.

Anthony Quint

Incredible. Tattoo is exhibit was even better than expected. Many small and big rooms to be explored.

Ling Gazzard

Easy to get to and lots of interesting information, but $15.50 admission for adults is quite steep.

Mark O

The staff here were so helpful. Nothing was too much trouble.

Marya Budianta

This was a great place to visit. Its free if you have a seniors card. There is a lift for those who cannot manage 2 flights of stairs. The long room was not open. I enjoyed the migrant stories the best.

Patrick Mete

Very interesting, interactive and in excellent general conditions. Loved the place. (Possibility of guided tour with head phones)

Antonio Terán

The Khalil Gibran exhibition is impressive.

RR

A good museum but have seen much more interesting and better presented museums, which were free. It seems that for the price you would get a better museum than a free one. Interesting subject, just not a fantastic presentation. Didn't keep your attention.
