You have the choice of walking around the trails of this historic site by yourself and read the plaques along the way or you can request a guide, for no extra charge. The end of the walk leads you to the Enchanted forest, where the trees twist and bend dramatically and take on a colour never seen in tree trucks any where else.

(Translated) Superb historic site which makes us see and understand what the fur trade was. The guides are excellent but, in our opinion, not present enough on the outside site to explain and tell us. (From there my evaluation to 4 stars). However, during the visit of the indoor exhibition, our guide was exemplary! The historical details and the enthusiasm of our guide made this day exemplary! The enchanted cedar forest, the point with its rocky shores, the edge of the lake ... bring your lunch to stop and enjoy the picnic area. A must in the region.

A great site to learn about the past and the importance of the Ottawa river. The information plaques are fun to read and the life size statues give a glimpse into the past. A good way to spend an 1-2 hours outdoors at the site.

(Translated) The Fort Témiscamingue National Historic Site is a magnificent place to visit if you are interested in the history of New France. There is an indoor museum with a nice little exhibit, but most of the museum is outside. There are ruins and reconstructions of old buildings. You can walk there for at least an hour. There is also a small park in the forest with works of art and an old cemetery.

Very interesting place to visit and walk through. Even if it ia mostly an outside excursion, there is also an indoor visit showing with interactive maps showing you the trade roads the people used to travel through in the past, as well as old artifacts found on the site. The outdoor visit shows you how life was, back then, in this trade post, being also a small village. The staff is very professional and will do everything to make you feel confortable, even provide you with an umbrella if it rains. The visit ain't long enough to occupy a complete afternoon, but bring your towel and bathing suit, the Temiscamingue lake is right there with pic nic tables and places to enjoy the beach! You can even rent a kayak or a pedalo at the Bannik rental stand.

Richard Diotte

Highly recommended! "Closed" during the pandemic (no fare collector) but you can access the fort, beach, and enchanted forest. There are reduced diorama structures available for viewing in the replica trading post fort, no tour guide obviously. Read up on the history prior to visiting for a better experience. Note: Le Bannik Restaurant is only open for supper.

(Translated) Exceptional site on the shores of Lake Temiscamingue, interesting permanent exhibition on the history of fur trade, still relevant NFB film on 'Voyageurs' (1964), demonstrations by craftsmen and activities on the site. Swimming and picnic possible at the entrance of the site. And outdoor games for children. A very nice historical family experience!
