My son's and I had a wonderful time touring the inside of the Submarine. Being the last weekend of the season there were no crowds. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend visiting.
Excellent site to see.Very informative tour guides, very friendly . This is a part of our history that everybody should see.
Our guide Cole was very enthusiastic about the tour and answered all our questions clearly.
It was amazing experience that was well worth the price! The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and they made every effort to accommodate our mobility issues. It is an experience that none of us will forget and our kids learned so much and didn't complain once about being bored!
A submarine! In Port Burwell. On land. Who knew? Very interesting experience. Tour takes you through the boat. Lovely town on the lake.
Very cool sub. Nice little port village. Tour is a bit pricey
Great piece of history. Very knowledgeable tour guide.
A great place to learn about our Canadian Naval history and what our inlisted men had to go through in times of war.
How often do you get to go inside a submarine? Very cool, worth the drive.
Definitely worth the visit, very interesting
Amazing museum of a real life submarine from the Cold war era. The tour is amazing. it takes about an hour, I was worried to make it boring, but it was very interesting overall, would recommend, and would do again.
Great piece of history. Very informative your guide. loved it.
It's remarkable that there are only 7 reviews for this experience! One of the coolest thing you couldn't possible do/see in Southern Ontario. Well worth the $20! The tour was long and informative. Any and all of your questions will be answered. Really where else would you have to chance to see something like this! Go check it out!
Great instructors also had a person who actually was in war in a sub tell us stories
Well worth a visit to explore the inside of a submarine and hear all the anecdotes about life on the boat.
HMCS Ojibwa is located at Port Burwell on Lake Erie. She is of Oberon Class and is a Cold War Era Sub. The Tours are first rate and take you from Stem to Stern aboard her. Well worth a visit, and some nice places in the area to have a meal and a pint. Definitely makes a great day trip! Go check Her out, you will be glad you did. ???????????? P.S.: She now has a new coat of paint!????
Led by a great group of people, a loved piece of history and I learned a lot! They've adapted well to the pandemic - small group tours, booking tickets with time slots online, well organized. Highly recommend.
Was an eye opening experience and made me more interested in submarines. My boyfriend throughly enjoyed the tour and the stories the tour guide told us.
Tour was very informative. Our tour guide, Corrina told some very interesting stories of life on the submarine.
My husband and I toured this last week and loved it. So interesting, was about an hr long. Would highly recommmend this. Was $49.50 for the two of us.
An excellent tour, and knowledgable staff. Our tour guide was experienced, knowledgable and full of historical facts of the vessel. This is a grand opportunity to see inside a real submarine and pay respect to the military service people who protect our country.
Place is not welcoming and expensive. You have to make special arrangements for the extensive tour inside the submarine.
Great place for children
It's a must go. Initially I thought it would be not that good but I was completely wrong. Make sure you don't miss this tour!
My partner and I were proud to tour HMCS Ojibwa a week ago. We had a very detailed, knowledgable, and humorous tour guide whose pride and love for the boat was apparent. I kept silent as I enjoyed his narrative. The tour was over an hour and well worth the admission I'm an ex Naval Officer and have the privilege of having friends who served on Ohibwa before she was decommissioned in 1998. They would be proud to see how she is preserved and cared for today. Thanks for all your efforts in restoring and sharing a piece of our proud RCN history.
This was one of the most unique experience for our family. Surprisingly my 8 year old daughter enjoyed it along with my 13 year old son who thought everything about it was 'so cool.' I promise to do it again by bringing others to it as well as take in other local attractions. The beach looks good...
Despite the out side paint issue, it's worth the money and time to do the tour. Highly recommend this.
Great tour guides very educational..
Absolutely loved our tour and hope to go back at some point after they are able to a quote some of the missing equipment
Nice opportunity to see something you couldn't see every day. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Awesome piece of navy/ civil engineering. ????
Although i thought it was a bit expensive. My family really enjoyed seeing the inside our guide was fantastic. Recomend the visit.
Missed the tour (weekends only during COVID), but was able to walk all the way around the outside of the fence and ask questions. Will try to come back another time for the tour since it has so many positive reviews. Sub has been freshly painted, as of summer 2020
Cole gave a great tour. Well worth the price of admission. A unique experience which you can't find anywhere else in Ontario.
Great tour. Guide was well informed but also genuinely interested in the history. Stories make you very proud to be Canadian. Highly recommended even at $20.
Came here and didn't know what to expect! I have never been in a submarine before. This was amazing! It was huge! The sub itself is incredibly interesting and the owners are very knowledgable. I think everyone should check out a submarine once! It was super cool!
Great site to visit for a first hand look at out naval history
A rare experieince well worth the trip and entry. Fascinating to be in a real submarine, especially one used in Canada. Tour was informative and well planned. I woud recommend to any one interested
Awesome! We were just driving thru and spotted this giant submarine on the side of the road. Checked it out and they give tours. Very interesting and informative.
I'm delighted with the excursion to this submarine. Very professional guides and the history of this submarine.
Unique once in a lifetime experience.
I went inside the submarine with my family. It was an eye opening experience to see how hard it is to be submariners. The guide was very knowledgeable about the sub and it's history. We had a great time submerged in the ocean (felt like it)!!
Very interesting and wortha check out.
Incredible experience! The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable!
Very cool... good tour
Mindblowing in person! Awesome tour, great guide and information overload! Definitely check it out.
Fantastic Canadian historical site. The biggest boy toy ever!! I do no under stand why more guys do not make the trip to get a one hour tour of a real spy submarine. I have gone twice with two different sets of guys and enjoyed it both times. The tour takes you through the boat. ( apparently you call a sub, a boat, not a ship and the crew are submariners, not sailors). While in town grab a beer and a perch meal. Before you go home, go to the other side of the bridge, make a sharp left turn to buy some great smoked fish.
A very good exhibit, well run tour with well trained guides. I thought it a little pricey but did enjoy it.
Excellent tour. Our Guide Corina was kind, respectful and knew her history. An excellent place to visit. Highly recommend it especially to history & military enthusiasts like myself.
Amazing tour of an historical icon the Ojibway... An Oberon class submarine that was a very effective war boat. We were given the tour by actual submariners! I loved their stories! We had a great time:) Thank you Ojibway team:)!
Nice to see a Canadian submarine. Needs to be painted regularly. Worth the trip
I enjoyed this tour greatly, we chose to do the inside tour only, there is the option of outside (great if you have children under 6 as they can not board the boat), inside or both. The guide was very informative, she definitely put many items into perspective for me. Only disappointment was unable to take pictures the whole way through, my husband believes due to the Victoria class still in operation, may have similar equipment and systems.
The tour of the sub was detailed and worth the trip. The rest of the museum was small.
The tour was great and the sub was amazing
Very cool real-life exhibit of a cold-war submarine where you can tour the inside in detail. Very knowledgeable volunteers.
Very knowledgeable staff. Great museum
This place sucks, the hospitality blows they have young underage people working behind the counter taking your order but can't touch the alcohol, she Dosnt know anything on the menue, such an uncomfortable feeling
A very interesting, indepth tour, though it is rather expensive. The sub is unfortunately rusting rather badly and people have mentioned that contacting the museum is not always easy. Their website has also listed incorrect hours in the past.
Very neat tour. It'll give you a better appreciation for our Navy. Thanks to all who served.
Had an amazing tour here this past weekend. The volunteer tour leader was fantastically knowledgeable and was full of stories of the vessel's use in the days of the cold war. Less of a museum and more of an untouched piece of history. Very few changes have been made and photography is allowed in several parts of the sub. I spent an hour and a half going through it with a decent sized group and there was plenty to see. Every question was thoroughly answered. A great experience overall and highly recommended!
We just seen it from the outside.Would love to go back now that it is open.
Not always open so check before you go. They have a retired diesel-electric submarine. Very cool.
Fantastic tour and definitely I recommend everyone take this tour. you don't have many chances that allow you go inside a submarine. Our tour guide is a very nice man and provide so much information about the submarine. Thank you for this unforgettable tour!
Had a fantastic time touring the museum, learning so many new facts, and enjoying the small group sizes due to the pandemic. Forgot to give a review, as we came last November- but just saw a few pictures that brought back some great memories! Thanks again to our very knowledgeable tour guide!
Great tours. So educational. Loved it.
EXCELLENT tour. Our guide did an excellent job of describing everything that could be explained. A must see while in the area. CLOSED on Mondays.
A must see for Cold War history buffs. Excellent staff, well displayed. A fit retirement for a sub that served over 30 years.
Have been on the tour twice, once a 5 star from a military vet, the other a 3 star from a university student who clearly memorized a script. Either way, don't pay extra for the outside tour, our student guide basically said we'll walk around the sub and if you have questions I'll answer them. Waste of money. But full value for the inside tour. I'll probably go again, but not for a couple of years.
Very interesting piece of history in a lovely part of southwestern Ontario.
My family and I had a great experience in this tour. Our young tour guide was very knowledgeable and she was a lot of fun. A must see!
This is a very unique experience. The sub is virtually unaltered, the tour was very professional and detailed. Pity the location is away from tourist routes, but for tech and history buffs the travel is well worth it.
Very interesting but no young kids allowed which makes sense. But no where did it say this before we arrived.
I did not have time to do the tour. Next time I will do the tour
Very informative, knowledgeable staff and very helpful... What an amazing submarine tour, thank you team! @MuseumNH #PortBurwell
Great tour! Loved seeing the insides! But I can't share any photos, it's classified...
Very cool history. Unfortunately it was closed so I didn't get to see the tour. Definitely will be back.
Very interesting to see the inside of an actual Canadian Submarine which isn't that far removed from service. The sleeping quarters were incredibly small...imagine the seamen were only permitted showers once every two weeks! And to think that smoking was common and allowed - among the crew! The admission price was high but they were very lenient about allowing Senior and Child Discounts. Since it was a guided tour - I felt the price was fair. Although our Guide talked so fast and in a monotone voice - he was hard to understand. All-in-all it was a nice break from the rainy weather and is probably a once in a lifetime event for the people in our group - young and old!
Really cool place to visit in Port Burwell. The staff are very knowledgable and are definitely passionate about the history of the submarine. Our tour was only for the outside since children under 6 aren't usually allowed to go on the …
Awesome 1 hour tour.
The submarine is pretty cool. I sometimes had trouble hearing our guide. I would have liked to hear more stories about the sub in action and less technical information.
I had an excellent and extensive tour in a group of four. It was disappointing that you cannot take pictures past the first room, but it added to the fun of it being a *special military sub!!!* Some complain about the price, but where else are you able to see such interesting vintage technology? Overall it was a great way to spend an hour in Port Burwell, and our guide was extremely knowledgeable.
Excellent tour of a piece of Canadian history.
Had a fantastic tour on the weekend of the HMCS Ojibwa. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and took the time to answer our questions as we went through. Tour lasted over an hour, although there is so much to see I am sure you could spend longer in there. Highly recommend!
Beautiful! This place gives 2 tour options: indoor and outdoor (never fear - the inside has AC). Across the street is a tasty chipwagon and local marine museum. It makes for a rather enjoyable time.
HMCS Ojibwa was an Oberon-class submarine that served in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and later the Canadian Forces Maritime Command (MARCOM). Originally intended for service with the British Royal Navy as HMS Onyx, the submarine was transferred to Canadian ownership before completion, and entered RCN service in 1965. Ojibwa operated primarily with Maritime Forces Atlantic until her decommissioning in 1998. In 2010, Ojibwa was laid up at CFB Halifax awaiting disposal, with the Elgin Military Museum planning to preserve her as a museum vessel. The submarine was towed to Port Burwell, Ontario in 2012, and was opened to the public in 2013. She is now the new focal point of a planned Museum of Naval History to be built alongside. The Oberon class were considered an improved version of the preceding Porpoise-class submarines, with a different frame of the pressure hull[2] and constructed from a better grade of steel. These build differences allowed the Oberons to have a deeper diving depth at roughly 1,000 feet (300 m). The submarines displaced 2,030 tonnes (2,000 long tons) surfaced and 2,410 tonnes (2,370 long tons) submerged.[4][2] They measured 295 ft 1⁄4 in (89.922 m) long with a beam of 26 ft 1⁄2 in (7.938 m) and a draught of 18 ft (5.5 m). The boats were powered by a two shaft diesel-electric system. The Oberons were equipped with two ASR 1 16-cylinder diesel engines creating 3,680 brake horsepower (2,740 kW) and two English Electric motors creating 6,000 shaft horsepower (4,500 kW). This gave the submarines a maximum surface speed of 12 knots (22 km/h; 14 mph) and a submerged speed of 17 knots (31 km/h; 20 mph). The boats carried 258 tons of oil giving them a range of 9,000 nautical miles (17,000 km; 10,000 mi) at 12 knots. The design was armed with eight 21-inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes, six in the bow and two in the stern. They carried 24 reloads for a total of 30 torpedoes. Canadian boats differed from the original design by being equipped for the US Mark 37C torpedo. The longer, wire-guided Mod 2 version was carried in the forward tubes and the non-guided Mod 0 for the rear tubes. The Oberons were equipped with Type 187 active-passive sonar, Type 2007 passive sonar and Type 2019 sonar.
Fascinating tour. Highly recommend it.
Incredibly interesting tour. Highly recommended.
I think it is something that people interested in our naval history should check out
Had a great time learning about and exploring the sub.
The Submarine is getting better looking everyday. I sailed on her back in the 70’s and now a volunteer in restoring and maintaining her This work period we managed to get the masthead raised and repaired the light on it, also strings of ceremonial lights were strung from the top of the fin to the bow and stern.
My husband and I were there to paint the Ojibwa submarine. Amazing ????
A must see! It's worth the drive to Port Burwell to tour the HMCS Ojibwa. One of only 3 Oberon-class cold war submarines that were purchased 'new' by the Canadian navy in the mid 1960's, she was retired in 1998. From the Halifax harbor, she was put on a barge and brought to Port Burwell at a tremendous cost. We received a guided tour of the sub and were able to experience a 'taste' of life lived in a submarine. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and answered any questions we had. You don't expect the find a 300ft submarine in southern On!
It's just cool. Don't get to see something like this very often
Great to visit but I was disappointed in the fact you can't take any pics inside because the government believes that there is still sensitive material inside
Fantastic tour. Not crowded and guide with passion and love for the boat.
Very interesting tour! Great tour guide and cool to see inside a large sub. Thank you!!!
What a cool find in Port Burwell! This is a really really REALLY awesome museum, worth the long trip for the kids and adults to experience and learn about this part of Canadian history. The whole family had so much fun just taking it all in, amazed at the technology and the people who sailed it. Drove from Long Point to this place and have to say the drive was great as well! Winding roads and rolling terrain, seeing wind farms and glimpses of Lake Erie were a nice change from high speed highways.
The tour guide was fantastic and gave so much detail. He did not rush the group in order to finish on time. I got such a great history lesson on the inside as well as the outside of the submarine. Thank you for a fantastic outing with my family and we will definitely be back. Young kids are not allowed which makes sense as lots of things can be broken.
Amazing history and tour
Where can you go to get a tour through a submarine. Still they aren't taking you through at any bargin price.
It's a great time going thru a Canadian submarine if you are short like me. And a lot of fun. It's a surprise that Canada had all these war machines I never knew about.
A rare piece of Canadian history. Frequently used as a movie set. We were fortunate to have a very knowledgeable tour guide who had actually served on the boat for two years. Prior to this I had no idea how difficult life on a submarine really was. Remarkable.
Great experience ! Super knowledgable guides, what a history lesson ????
Not open for viewing yet. Suppose to be open on the April 13th weekend.
An amazing part of Canadian naval history.
Terrific experience! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about submarines.
Went on the tour through it today. Was very interesting and the tour guides were very good. Well worth the price.
A must see, great experience ????
Our tour guide was phenomenal and so knowledgeable. Highly recommend!
I went into the tour not knowing what to expect. I am glad I took it. It is not a fun tour. There is no way to make being on that sub into a pleasant experience, and I think that is the value of the tour. They have made it as clean as possible and gotten rid of the smells as much as possible but despite that it is still not nice to be on this sub and you get a taste of what it would have been like to work on a sub. Expensive and smelly and unpleasant and I would not go again, but at the same time I felt it was certainly worth it to go once. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and the tour I think ran about 40 minutes with a small group - there is only so cheap they could make this and still break even.
Great Tour!! Tour guide is very knowledgeable. Insane how big submarines are in person.
Great tour by a knowledgeable guide. Very interesting. Highly recommend. Then go visit the nude beach if the weathers nice.
What an incredible place. The tour and guide were both fantastic. We arrived too late one day for the tour. I'm glad we went back. Well worth the price.
Great tour. Knowledgeable staff
Great experience very informative and interesting, overall would recommend to everyone.
This was an awful experience when you are treated rudely being told my son will be bored and do I realize it's steel. In the end she refused to sell me tickets ????. I drove 2hrs to be turned away. Submarine is not for families or women I guess
A chance to tour a Submarine how many can say that you have .I have taken the tour 3 times and each time I have learned amazing facts about our Canadian Cold War hero's.You should visit.
Very very interesting. Lot of history, imagine the places this submarine has seen. Len was a great guide!
The submarine tour was amazing. Our guide's name was Fred and he was an ex-submariner. He was very knowledgeable, engaging, funny and shared some great personal anecdotes. We learned a lot about our naval history. The submarine itself is well set up and maintained. We booked ahead due to COVID. Thank you for preserving our naval history and sharing your knowledge. Thanks also for keeping your guests safe by following protocol.
Awesome experience Highly recommend taking a tour
I would highly recommend the tour of the naval sub.. our tour guide was very knowledgeable..
A good Motorcycle Destination. Very informative. Money well spent....
Great Tour of Canadian history. A must see if your in the area. The tour guides are great and I have not had this happen but I have heard some vets that served on HMCS Ojibwa sometime stop in to give the tour. Everything for the most part is still in the Sub and you are able to look and touch history on this tour! I would honestly do it again it was that good. Highly recommended.
Not cheap but how often do you get to take a guided tour of a cold war era submarine?
Nice and beautiful place to visit for family ????
Awsome! Our guide Cathy was super informative.
We saw it when it first opened and we had an excellent tour. Though cramped for space it is spacious compared to WWII US subs. I was surprised to learn that the giant diesel engines were used to charge the batteries. Electric motors are used to turn the propellers. The area is worth seeing as well.
Worst excuse for a human being selling tickets for the tour today. August 13, 2021 1st ) We arrived at 2.30 today assuming everything was back to almost normal …
Nice tour of a retired Canadian submarine - tour illustrates it's history and a few funny anecdotes
This was a really good tour. Wally our tour guide was the best. A must see tour and if you get Wally, even better!!!
Enjoy the tour very knowledgeable staff
Tour guide was very informative and pleasant
It was very impressive and the tour guide was excellent and knowledgeable
Great tour even though the missions of this vessel are classified. A bit more about how the boat works would have been nice on the tour
Enjoyed the tour the guides very good worth a vist just for the sub not counting the restaurants and beach
Had a great tour. Excellent guide. Very interesting.
A hidden gem in the area. Who would ever imagine getting close to a cold war era submarine, not to mention getting into one? The tour was extremely well conducted by a volunteer, who shared a lot of fun facts and fascinating stories. The internal space is cramped (as a sub should be), but well maintained and ventilated. Just watch your head if you're tall. Give it a visit, it is worth the drive and you won't be disappointed. Advance booking is strongly encouraged, as they only run group of 5 tours every half an hour due to COVID.
Fantastic! The tour guide was phenominally knowledgable about the Ojibwa's service and history. He also told interesting aspects about issues unique to submarines, and about the crew [submariners] - how they had to work and live aboard the sub. The submarine is impressive to see!
The tour was fantastic. I actually knew a submariner who has passed away now and did indeed serve on this boat. The tour really put things perspective for me and deepened the respect and appreciation I have for all the seamen that served on these things. The guide was knowledgable and he had a passion that couldn't be hidden. I would like to thank everyone that has made this museum possible. To me it pays great tribute to those who served especially to my friend that had 25 years in the navy with twelve of those years in submarines.
A must do if you are in the area. It was well worth the money and time. So glad we discovered this on our travels. Fascinating place! Kudos to our guide.
Nice piece of history, narrated tour very informative.
