Very informative

(Translated) It has been a long time since I came here and relive the past, the present and the community that comes and goes around this hidden jewel. Formerly I was a guide interpreter, formerly a volunteer and occasionally I was part of a circle of writers. This place which brings together literary and historical society today has already been a prison and just as much a school. Don't hesitate to take a look at the library. It is accessible for free, but you have to become a member to publish a book. The guided tour seems just as educational to me with the new guides who welcome everyone in English and French. It's been since 2013 that I no longer visit this place as much. But I have just rediscovered this place and I am just as dazzled by this universe that I have known since 2006.

Students Love Travel

Not sure how long this place has been around, but once we discovered it's the Old Gaol a few years ago we had to check it out! We now take our students there regularly, as the tour provides a fascinating insight into incarceration 200 years ago. Their "Life of a Prisoner Tour" provides students with an eye-opening experience of what it was like to be a prisoner - from moment of arrival though day to day life. The expressions on the students faces as they realize that people were locked up for what are now recognized as mental illnesses, or when they see how the latrines work, or get to taste some of the medicines, or get locked in the "hole" are priceless. Go check it out.

Fascinating building- the tour is highly recommended to learn more about its history as a prison and then as a college. While the preserved cells were interesting and the library was beautiful, the highlight was definitely the nineteenth century science lab, complete with historic equipment.

Unfortunately, we were not aware of the guided tours and that it was required to view the establishment. There was an option to explore but we had to change our shoes. While I respect that. I just found it a bit odd. I would have liked to have seen this while on my limited visit but due to the holidays I am unfortunately unable to do so. From pictures and other reviews, it does seem like quite the experience. Just wish I had the time to experience this myself.

The Morrin centre is a gem, having preserved so many layers of history. We enjoyed the good presentation of its rich history. Visitation is by tour only and our tour guide was Max and he was great! He made the tour very interesting and his presentation was enjoyable, slipping in several jokes along the way. Only wished we could return to the jail cells to finish reading the write ups in there. Also be sure to check the specific timeslots for the english and french tours.

Ask for Ben! This tour was really fun and informative. Our group was small enough that we were able to spend more time tinkering with the chemistry stuff and wandering around. The building was an old prison and eventually turned into the current Quebec City library. I won't give away all the history tidbits you learn on the tour...but I will say it was well worth it. The building and library are beautiful. -Travelationship

Be sure to take the tour - there's a rich history here that can easily be missed with the direction of the centre's amazing tour guides. It's truly a great experience for those who love Canadian History!

A very interesting library. Beautiful old architecture. Free to see the library but must pay for a tour of the prison cells in the basement area. We didn't see the prison area but enjoyed the rest. Super nice employees!

(Translated) Its library is a gem for book lovers. A perfect way to spend a quiet afternoon away from the buzz of old Quebec. Readers of "Bury Your Dead" by Louise Penny will be able to experience one of the main stages of the novel. The front desk staff let us know that you cannot enter unless you are a member, but were a bit rude about it. We are tourists so how are we to know that automatically? Would’ve appreciated them being a bit kinder about that since we came …

(Translated) Nice return on our history, but the '' humor '' of the guide who showed us around the place leaves us a little perplexed since the history is tragic. The quality of this guided tour was quite poor.

(Translated) Old style public library. You will feel like traveling in the past. Allow time for the guided tour that will make you see the 1812 jail of Quebec City, the lab (Harry Potter style) of the English-language institution of higher education in the city of Quebec in 1868. To have, (Original) Bibliothèque publique style ancien.

(Translated) Former English prison in the center of Quebec, since transformed into a cultural center and including a pretty little library. The guided tour allowed us to go deeper into the old prison cells and the remains of what remains of the school that replaced the prison. The guide was wonderful and made the visit a little dismal.
