REVIEWS OF Hector Heritage Quay IN Pictou

Recreation of the first Scottish immigrants who weekend the freedoms to preserve their cultural heritage and a better life in the new world. The ship landed in Pictou where the site is. You get a chance to see how they endured the hardship during the voyage. 189 persons cramped in the vessel more than 2 months in the rough sea. Sadly this recreation of the Hector now has shown sign of wood rot and will need a major restoration soon

Nice spot worth a look at. Pictou very nice town to have a look at

An interesting exhibit to learn about the hardships of immigration. The museum was very informative and the staff quite nice with answering questions. Some of the decor seemed out of place ( I was distracted by a skull that was clearly a Halloween decoration) but ultimately it was worth the look. I agree that the ocean view was quite obscured by the pulp-mill pumping out fumes that could be smelled in the air.

Reinhart Gruhn

Excellent presentation of a not so far history, worth to visit.

Krista Whitehouse

Love the museum and the history. They had actors playing parts of the people on the ships and the ship itself was such an education. Outside the grounds, you can find a monument to the Scottish travellers who arrived on the ship and started their lives in Nova Scotia, encouraging other Scots to follow in their paths. Very fun and educational to visit while in Pictou.

A must go for those in Pictou who want some deep history in the ship Hector and it's passengers. The museum is beautiful and make sure to check out the wood worker and the blacksmith. I was able to pick up some blacksmith pieces which I love!

Ed Prior

Came here as part of an organized tour, so we were part of a fairly large group. The docents did a great job of describing the hardships endured by the Scottish settlers on their way to the new world. The reconstruction of the Hector really helped appreciate how hard the crossing really was. Well worth a visit.

Intetesting exhibits and nice to be able to go inside ship and see the cramped quarters, but the ship is very rotted which is too bad. A new replica should get built. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable.

Carolyn Bradshaw (PolythPam)

Fantastic setup and displays. Lots of information to read and learn about life of the settlers before they came over, and the harsh trip across the ocean to a hard life in the new world. Seeing the ship being restored is a once in a lifetime experience.

Kim Rayko

Absolutely wonderful museum! The scenes make the stories come alive! So much history in a beautiful building.

Wayne Geiser

Amazing how deteriorated this boat has become since it was put in the water in 2000! The exhibits were very interesting, but had far too much reading (and I'm usually very good about that sort of thing). Still, the story is an interesting and important one.

Carlos Morales

Very interesting restoration project with a museum for learning everything related to this ship and its relevance in Canadian history

Hollie Howlett

An amazing part of history here, very near and dear to the local community. A shame they didn't keep up with the replica ship. When I was here 10 years ago it was afloat in the water and you got to check it out. Really brought to light what our ancestors faced coming to the new land.

General Dexter

Nothing was open due to Covid but everyone was vaccinated and tested the before, I will not return.

Stacy Bruce

Nice little museum which the kids also found interesting

Monica Stoilov

Too bad we know so little about this part of our history! Should be included in all elementary students curriculum!

Dave Roberts

Very nice walk along the harbor.

Mirosław Ławczys

Disappointing. We came here to see replica of Hector ship. Unfortunately, it fell into disrepair only 20 years after it was built. Seems like 18th century shipbuilders had better skills than 21st century ones. It really is a shame. Renovations are scheduled to last until 2023. Museum, however, is worth a visit. Description of 1773 Hector journey is well done.

Jean-Philippe Michaud

A must in the area, located only few kilometers away from the ferry. Hector replica is in bad shape and needs major repairs, donations are needed but craftsmen on site are doing a lot with very little.

Mitch Henry

Great spot to see the history of Scottish immigration to Canada. Read interpretive panels ir watch a movie inside for the story of those who first came over on the ship Hector. Also a recreation of the ship is avaliable to enter outside and see how these poor souls lived for 2 months on their journey.

The board walk around the nautical museum, is picturesque even under cloudy skies. The museum itself is well maintained and includes a tour of "the Hector," a replica boat that brought the first immigrants over from Scotland. One can also visit the workshops of the blacksmiths and carpenters involved in building the replica. I was amazed at the craft- menship of the wood carvings, really beautiful. The only drawback is the odour in the air outside, along the board walk. It could be the pulp mill across the water ruining the experience .

Ronald Newcombe

Lovely museum. Very informative and the community's passion for their history really shines through.

Melissa R

Had a great time exploring the Scottish immigration museum and learning more about what it was like for the Settlers. The staff were all very knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely worth visiting!

Andreas Gorbach

Small museum which describes in good detail the history of the first Scottish people in Nova Scotia. Good to spend 1-2 hours with family. The ship itself is overrated.

kchall hall

Enjoyed the museum, with an abundance of information and great sights of the ship.

Phyllis Rowe

The museum was very informative regarding the movement of the Scottish to Canada.. the ship and how it was recreated was interesting. We enjoyed visiting this museum very much.

Willy Jennings

Pretty but not much else there to do. Long ride to see little.

Dennis Adams

Great place and village. See the Hector and have lunch in town is worth the trip.

Jonathan Powell

Seemed the best attraction within 100km of the area and likely was. Museum was mainly walls of text. Ship was worth a walk through. Worth an hour spent on Pictuo.

Frans Sanders

Nice museum outlining the history of a historic voyage to Nova Scotia. It describes things well and underscores the importance of this trip for the history of Nova Scotia. Unfortunately a lightning strike hit the mast and ruined a good portion of the boat. I have seen it in better days, see pictures in other reviews, but was saddened to its state now. Work has been set back a lot.
