The Exhibition this weekend was excellent! The emphasis this time is on Asian works. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, India, Thailand... you get the picture. As well as the permanent exhibit, always worth a walk-through.

Lovely gallery. Would have enjoyed seeing more Emily Carr totem paintings but her landscapes were wonderful. Lots of interesting art from Asia.

Really didn't get to go in. My biggest hurdle was that it didn't open till 12 on Sunday. Other attractions in the area open at 10, so it's difficult to go from one site to the art museum.

When we visited only 2 main galleries had paintings, other than a random smattering of art in the old house portion. I enjoyed the Emily Carr exhibit and the Japanese prints but two other full galleries seemed to be for public consultation about the future of the institution, which is a great idea if you live there but not when you're from out of town. Nice gift shop!

Great location in upper downtown Victoria. Once a year they hold an Open House to the public which I took in for my first visit. The Open House was 3 blocks long on Moss Street. The actually Gallery rested in the middle of the 3 blocks. Featured on the street were all kinds of different types of Art from paintings to jewellery, all by local artists. It is an event I would recomend anyone to attend at least once. The people were polite, friendly and it was pet friendly as well. To top all of that there were also mobile vendors to feed everyone and alcoholic drinks for those who chose to drink something besides the free ice cold water supplied.

Love this gallery, lots of diffrent exhibit spaces that are always changing. Lovely exhibit opening parties as well, the curators definitely know what they are doing.

Really nice gallery, wonderful various collections. The gallery could really benefit from a coffee shop, perhaps backing into their patio.

Francisco Emiliano Pastrana

It has a very nice variety of exhibitions. The museum doesn't feel so big but they have an incredible use of the space where it doesn't feel exhausting and yet you leave like you saw a huge museum. All while learning a lot too!

Located in a quiet neighborhood, this gallery+museum is certainly a pleasure to visit. Great place to learn about local artists and their works. Miscellaneous collections of handcrafts. Also many pieces from Asian countries. Good opportunity for local people to get a glimpse of the history of the far East. The space is well organized, with clear visiting route. The staff is friendly and helpful.

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is a must see if you are in Victoria. I have been here a couple of times and have always left feeling a little more knowledgeable. The gallery itself is beautiful; it is situated in an old mansion surrounded by beautiful gardens - all very picturesque. The art here is worth coming to. The exhibitions are constantly changing, so there is always something new to see (and an excuse to keep coming back). The highlight for me when I last visited was the Rembrandt etchings.

I particularly enjoy the Asian and First Nations exhibition the most but it's hit and miss what's being featured at the gallery. Checking the website events calendar prior to the visit is best. When they featured the Emily Carr exhibit, the variety of pieces shown were invaluable. My children like to wander in the garden and check the elaborate dollhouse. Definitely check out the gift shop and don't forget to sign the guest book. Sometimes I like looking at past pages because sometimes artistic visitors leave beautiful entries. The operating hours are a disappointment; Thursdays are the only day of the week with extended hours into late evening and seasonal hours on certain months make trips difficult especially for shift workers wanting to bring children.

I would like to give accolades to the gallery from my professional perspective. I am a home stager and need to rent art for my work on a regular basis. This gallery is a great source of art rentals. I have been using the artwork supplied to the gallery by local artists for many years. The staff is very knowledgeable, the art is well curated, and the selection is great. New pieces are introduced to the rental department on a regular basis. I love the fact that I can support the gallery, local artists, and the same time make my work a pleasurable experience. Big Thank You to Karen Cooper, who is always very helpful when it comes to choosing artwork to fit a particular style of a house or a colour scheme. Overall, I cannot recommend this gallery high enough.

The AGGV has great exhibits, each is well designed, not too big and easy to digest. They've added some nuances to their Emily Carr exhibit in regards to her work and indigenous people and territory.

Not every art gallery leaves a positive impression on me but this one did. It may not be one of the biggest art galleries but it contains very valuable and impressive pieces of art. I went there looking for some interesting BC art, and left with a big grin on my face. The gallery it self was not complete but the art that was there was very well displayed and it added the the Stendhal syndrome. The Shinto shrine in the back of the gallery, is apparently the authentic shrink in North America, and quite honestly it was one of the most calming experiences I have ever had. To top that all off the experience was amazing solely because of the staff, they were attentive and informative.

The AGGV is quite small, but it manages to host very interesting exhibitions. The chief attraction at the moment if an exhibition places the works of Emily Carr, which are the gallery’s pride and joy, among works by a number of other artists who were in the modern tradition. The comparisons are fascinating. There are three other special exhibitions at present, each of them moderately interesting. The museum shop is very good, and a visit to Spencer House, the mansion in which the gallery began in 1951, is also worthwhile.

The display of Emily Carr along with other artist's work inspired by her work was an interesting display. Exhibiting the works this way gives contrasts & comparisons, showing how visions evolve. The "blue & white" exhibit shows the use of those colours in fabric, ceramics, etc. The dollhouse, which has been shown in the gallery for so many years is a treasure to explore; details of woodworking & craftsmanship are admirable. The display of small works for sale is a great way to see the variety of local artist's work which is available to either rent or purchase.

Situated in a very nice neighbourhood, this gallery houses a mixture of modern arts and more traditional pieces. The gallery is not very large. the exhibition halls are all lined up in the newer building. We started at the far end and made our way back toward the lobby. This happened to take us from the Samurai armour, through a blue-on-white ceramic exhibition to a couple of installation art halls. It was a nice stepping though arts and crafts in somewhat chronological line. the ornate gave way to the abstract. We also stopped by the Shinto temple outside. The garden setting was very peaceful and welcoming.

It is a small gallery, tucked away from main foot traffic areas. I like it because it is in an unexpected place and features mostly BC artists. It would be great to see more international work as well. Great gift shop, local artisans. Beautiful historic building. There administrative area was other well marked and we wandered upstairs by accident, were met with a bit of passive aggressive attitude from admin staff and a security guard, felt as if they thought we did it on purpose...anyway, they gotta get better signage!! Overall good quality of work in the gallery. Would live to see more aboriginal art featured!!

K C

Nice place to bring kids to go and check out. Hope they can open the second floor in the Spencer family home, the original art gallery. Maybe need mote description on the arts. Find some of the art works have detailed description but most of them, in my opinion, maybe not.

What a great gallery! Lots of unexpected surprises to discover. The layout was a little weird and I almost missed the room with Emily Carr, Lauren Harris, and Maude Lewis. The gallery has a small selection that focuses on local Canadian art (including Canadian immigrants). The gift store has low quality merchandise. I was able to purchase a cup that failed to hold water, failing its main purpose as a cup (it was made in china, not at the museum, but they unfortunately sell this level of quality). Their baggage check is discriminatory. If you are a woman you can take any boat of a purse and leave with any amount of art. If you are a man with a satchel they will confiscate your personal property and will claim no liability if it is lost, damaged or stolen. In this way, the museum is no better than ones that exist in America. They are no more socially conscious than anyone else.
