Very interesting museum if you enjoy natural history. Although not a huge museum in size it has a unique layout that reminds me of an archive, and all the taxidermy is very high quality. The staff were also fairly friendly and answered questions we had. It is 12 dollars each for adults and students get a discount, which I think is fairly reasonable for the content. I would definitely recommend it if you're in the UBC area and have some free time.

Dissapointed in regards to the whale documentary offered and our timing of arrival. My bf and I arrived at 3:55 and saw a poster outside the theatre - 4:00pm documentary. We sat down in the theatre excited to see a short documentary and then have time to view the rest of the museum. Little did we know, the documentary DRAGGED on because it was an episode of reality TV with the commercials cut out. When we decided to leave - 50 mins had passed! There were staff closing up the taxidermy and fossilized exhibits :( we had 10 minutes to run past any uncovered displays (they protect the displays from light each night and cover them with black cloth) and try to get a glimpse of a museum we were very excited to see, but unfortunately missed. A suggestion to the museum-Please post the duration and title with credits of the documentary so this simple mistake doesn't happen to new guests. Perhaps in my excitement the posted DID say that info too, but I'm not sure and I wish I could go back.

It's not a museum. It's an archive / storage for the ubc students' use from what I can tell. 90% of the space of this building is occupied by closed black metal shelves / storage units (you don't see what's inside). Remaining 10% of those shelves have glass windows to look through. Only about 1% of all of those are looking like exhibitions. The rest are represented by jars containing specimens. Those are not interesting to see after you saw a couple. Even if it was free, I would have been underwhelmed but would get why it's free... Charging $14 for admission however is an overkill. The whale skeleton is the best and most interesting exhibition in this place. You can look at it just entering the building but not paying the ticket price.

One of the best museums I've visited! Friendly staff offer intriguing tours of the active research facility which moonlights as a museum. The building is slick, well lit and comfortable. You descend along a long ramp below a gigantic 30 tonne blue whale skeleton to the museum cabinets full of plant, animal and insect specimens with interesting facts.

A little confusing and dark, but that's because it's a real archive collection with occasional bits exposed for the public. Not many collections show "moths (unidentified)" to the public. The whale is fairly spectacular, and you can get much closer than the one in London's NHM.

This was as really interesting natural history museum to visit. The exhibit is a mix of interpretive messages on cabinets that hold their collections mixed with a variety of displays of objects from the cabinets. They fit a lot into a fairly compact space.

The museum is really good overall especially considering that most of it serves as long term storage for researcher(?). The specimens are all well done and the presentation is great. You have to love the giant whale skeleton hanging from the roof. We met two coordinators who just finished a school tour and they were very friendly, helpful, and informative. Unfortunately they weren’t really there for the general public. In the children’s corner (furthest corner of the building) the person there was not very enthusiastic and didn’t seem great with kids. The timeline of earth along one wall was really cool to visualize the history of our planet and the fossils inset into the glass cases in the floor were really nicely done. The theatre showed some very cool video clips of researchers and their projects which were very accessible. The biggest drawbacks are that the majority of the area of the museum is closed, windowless cases. About 1/5 of the cases has a display, at best. I understand the need for storage, but this is supposed to be a museum, not a warehouse. There were also many specimens which were hard to discern since they were in small or overly cramped jars. Overall, I suggest that everyone check it out at least once. It’s free for students and faculty. I don’t think it has much return potential for kids. If you’re interested in vertebrates, evolution, natural history, or just like seeing cool (preserved) animals, you may find this museum worth more than one visit.

The museum feels more like a vault for preserved organisms. There are about 50ish rows of shelves that store different specimens. Some slots of the shelves become beautiful showcases of the animals; others seen to be stored for academic studies. The Beaty Biodiversity Museum is a natural history museum in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, located on the campus of the University of British Columbia. Its 20,000 square feet (1,900 square metres) of collections and exhibit space were first opened to the public on October 16, 2010; since then it has received over 35,000 visitors per year. Its collections include over two million specimens collected between the 1910s and the present, comprising the Cowan Tetrapod Collection, the Marine Invertebrate Collection, the Fossil Collection, the Herbarium, the Spencer Entomological Collection, and the Fish Collection. The collections focus in particular on the species of British Columbia, Yukon, and the Pacific Coast. The museum's most prominent display is a 25-metre (82-foot) skeleton of a female blue whale buried in Tignish, Prince Edward Island, which is suspended over the ramp leading to the main collections. The centre is housed in a 11,520 square metres (124,000 square feet), four-storey building. The building was designed by Patkau Architects in 2009 and built by Scott Construction. It formed the final side of a landscaped quadrangle created by the 2006 construction of the Aquatic Ecosystems Research Laboratory. The Beaty Biodiversity Museum features several laboratories The museum includes a theatre and 20,000 square feet (1,900 square metres) of collections and exhibit space.[8] It is entered through the Mowafaghian Atrium, a glass-walled gallery two storeys tall which, in addition to the museum's gift shop and the Niche Cafe, houses the museum's signature piece: Canada's largest blue whale skeleton.[5] The display is a "see-through box" whose façade windows have "steel mesh brises-soleils". The museum lies parallel to one of the main walking routes of the university campus, was described in Exploring Vancouver: the architectural guide as "a perfect commission for architects known for creative restraint". The whale is suspended over a descending ramp by which the collections are accessed. The space also includes a "family zone" with juvenile reading materials and a teaching collection in a Discovery Lab. Most of the collections are displayed in cabinet windows and shadow boxes, although a few are shown through alternative displays like in-ground "excavations" that under glass that visitors can walk on. The $50-million building was designed in the interests of sustainability. It has a green roof and a reed water garden to reduce pollutants and improve drainage of storm water from the building. The centre does not have air conditioning, except in some of its laboratories; instead, the temperature level is mediated by natural ventilation through the facility's concrete walls and by the use of sunshades on the outside of the building. Natural lighting is also optimized to reduce the building's use of electricity, which also assists in the preservation of some light-sensitive collections. Finally, the centre includes several "recycling hubs" and has facilities for the composting of organic waste material.

The blue whale, the movies, the mammal and bird sections are incredible! The discovery lab is amazing too, provides a closer look at a lot of different animals. The volunteers are super knowledgeable, helpful! I was unimpressed with the other collections. Reptiles, insects, flora, could be better presented. A lot of the exhibits could use some more light, or more information on what is being shown. Some of the text is either too small or too far. There is a challenge to find the Passenger Pigeon in one of the exhibits, but none of the birds have identification tags! Just a few suggestions. Overall, recommended! But there is room for improvement.

There is a giant whole blue whale skeleton at the entrance of the museum. You don't have to pay for admission to see it but you can definitely go inside to take photos of it. It also has the story of where it came from and the efforts to make it available for display. Definitely impressive to see if you're on the campus!

Have to go see the giant blue whale skeleton but there is also much more to see. Whether you have an interest in the natural world or have a child who likes learning about animals (and isn't scared of animal bones) there is lots to see and do. Membership is inexpensive and there are different exhibitions throughout the year. There is a discovery lab manned by volunteers where you can have a chance to see, touch and feel different animal specimens such as a shark jaw, porcupine fish, insects, birds, various other marine life and land animals. Great for kids as young as 3 or 4 at minimum probably and interesting for elementary aged children as well.

Doubling as an archive, the Biodiversity Museum has an interesting method of setting up its displays. Rather than set out only a portion of its displays and store the rest, the museum is set up as an archive, with glass windows in some of the cabinets for visitors to see through. Don't come expecting displays - despite this unorthodox style, it's rather interesting. The museum also has the skeleton of a blue whale suspended from the ceiling, adding an imposing presence, able to be seen through the glass walls.

Large collection of natural history specimens. Most are local to the area, or at least Canada, but there are a few from farther afield. Found a book about bugs of British Columbia and learned that we don’t have poisonous spiders ;) They also show a movie about discovering the huge skeleton of a prehistoric beast that is display at the entrance of museum.

During COVID time, the museum has fewer exhibitions and zero hands-on activities. Nonetheless I think you can spend a few hours here if you go through everything. To me, this is an archive of specimens and files for the Biodiversity researches. The large room is filled with rows of metal cabinets with occasional glass display and signs. It fills cold and static. There are displays with drawers, but they cannot be opened because of COVID. As going further into the exhibits, there are a lot of specimens in jars, which many are old and not very clear. I think they need brighter lights so visitors can see what's inside better. Otherwise, I think the trip is quite educational. Parking at the Health and Science Parkade about $8/hr.

It's an archive with windows. Most of these windows are too small for proper viewing of the exhibits. Many of the windows have a mesh across them that inhibits proper viewing of what's behind them. Many of the exhibits are beneath waist height and include little information. The exhibits are mostly made up of taxidermied animals or animals in jars of formaldehyde. The museum was opened late because one of the staff forgot to open the front door.

My LOs love this museum. Membership gets you a 10% discount on the high quality merchandise in the gift shop. The kids love the taxidermy animals, fossils and hands on lab in the back of the museum. This place is really quiet so dont expect large crowds or competition to try out the hands-on exhibits or activities- a major plus in my book with a 2 and 3 yr old!

Wonderful, ended up spending far longer there than I intended. The cons: the 'discovery centre' wasn't open when I went, but not that big a deal, there was still a lot to look at. Also, some displays were rather dark but I'm assuming that was to protect the specimens. Be aware that there are a lot of stuffed animals staring into your soul with their cold dead eyes (but that's kinda to be expected at a natural history type place.

It was okay. The huge whale skeleton display was great, and what we watched of the "making of" it was quite interesting. There were plenty of cases full of things to look at, although a lot of the cases were just locked without being able to peek inside. The "touch" room at the back was nice and we had some one-on-one with the volunteer back there. It was a bit over priced for what you could actually see and do.

The blue whale, the movies, the mammal and bird sections are incredible! The discovery lab is amazing too, provides a closer look at a lot of different animals. The volunteers are super knowledgeable, helpful! I was unimpressed with the other collections. Reptiles, insects, flora, could be better presented. A lot of the exhibits could use some more light, or more information on what is being shown. Some of the text is either too small or too far. There is a challenge to find the Passenger Pigeon in one of the exhibits, but none of the birds have identification tags! Just a few suggestions. Overall, recommended! But there is room for improvement.

The dramatic highlight of the museum is the first thing we saw: a full-size (and that's big) skeleton of a blue whale suspended in the entrance atrium. It is a humbling sight. A film shown every few hours tells its story and is worth the time, despite being a slightly frustrating, unedited commercial TV documentary that is somewhat breathless at times. The rest of the museum is frustrating. It is a traditional museum of taxidermy and jars. Some of the displays are excellent and informative. Others are hard to see, crowded and have poorly-lit or undersized labels. Some work on this could raise the museum from merely good to excellent.

It's not really a museum. It's a collection and an archive, but from a museum standpoint it fails. The displays are poorly marked and badly lit, and there's no flow between sections, just row upon row of closed cabinets. The blue whale skeleton is impressive, but the museum misses a big opportunity in not having the front hall area where it is displayed not be about the skeleton, given that it is a main feature of the exhibition. Probably very valuable to researchers, a waste of time and money to average museum goers.

honestly this was really underwhelming. I looked on the website and it mentioned they had a big collection of bugs and plants so my boyfriend and I were really excited to go! Unfortunately when we got there 90% of the museum was just pictures with little descriptions of everything. The only thing they actually had on display were stuffed animals/animal heads which were cool but we were definitely expecting a lot more. If you decide to go I highly recommend buying tickets off groupon. it was only $10 for my boyfriend and I to go so it wasn't a total loss.

What a great place for my kids to learn and explore - they had their lab open so my kids could touch and feel different dead things and the dinosaur tracks were so much fun for them to feel and think about. Great collection with variety of plants, insects, fossils, fish, terrestrial vertebrates, and marine invertebrates. Presented in taxidermy and fossilized forms. Very immersive and interesting to see all the different lifeforms from different parts of the world. Museum is relatively new and I wish some of the displays could be better. Some of the displays were kept in jars, which were hard to see and didn't really offer much. Overall, I was very impressed and definitely worth it for the price of admission (discounted price of $7 for 2).

Very cool place. They have different categories layouts in aisles. They even have one little section at the very back of the museum where you can touch and learn about the species. If you ask them nicely, the staffs can show you their put away collections. I took my daughter there last time. The girl was so nice to show us the butterflies that weren’t displayed on the tables for the day.

This is an awesome place to see tones of examples of once-alive animals, plants, mushrooms, and other living organisms. We got Groupon deal and it was very worthwhile. Was extremely disappointed. This place has sooooo much potential and just didn't. The idea of 100s of thousands of species is amazing. Unfortunately walls and walls of black cabinets with labels telling you what you can't see is frustrating. What few displays there are (between 2 and 6 windows per aisle) are reinforced glass set at knee height or shoulder height. Some are well lit displays others are windows looking at stacked file folders or rows of glass jars. There is very little to interact with or touch. No computers to learn more. A small 2 bench reading area with science books for kids. The gift shop and the blue whale skeleton are the coolest part. (You can see those for free) This is not a great fun thing for kids. My husband and I love biodiversity and more adult museums and we were very very let down.The theater played dry boring videos from researchers talking on their field but they were each 1/2 long and you would have to be very dedicated to learn much from them. Seats are comfy. If you were a student involved in this field you might love it there. The stuffed taxidermy were interesting but out of 27 aisles there were 2 of easy to see/appreciate displays. Museum is accesible and level but make sure to ask about using the elevator as the ramp is steep and long. (We had to ask 3 staff before someone knew where it was and even when we paid admission and mentioned we used accessible parking it wasn't offered. Staff member simply sneered and complained that we got the only free parking on campus) Speaking of PARKING- all of UBC is pay parking. GPS will not get you anywhere near the museum. It tries to get you to turn down do not enter roads. Use it to get close and plan to walk. Watch the signs you will pass for the WALKING route to the museum which is tucked in between 3 buildings.

For a brief review though, It’s more of a research display than a museum as it’s fairly small and doesn’t seem so catered to be showcased. Many of the rows were dark, narrow, and as I mentioned, there was limited seating. Since I didn’t receive a guided tour, I was wondering what the context was for many of the exhibitions, but I got to hear a little bit and it seemed very worthwhile. I’d say go if you have a combo pass with the Museum of Anthropology (I haven’t gone, but I heard it’s more “museum”-y haha) as the price is a bit steep for admission. For students like myself, who either get discounts or are free if they go to UBC, it is a fantastic opportunity to spend a day there. The specimen themselves are fascinating, the exhibitions are small but carry impact, and the staff are great (I love Deepti!). Enjoy your trip if you are interested in going!

My friends and I visited the Beaty on a Saturday, April 13th to catch the "Invoking Venus - Fashion and Feather" exhibit. This was our first visit to the Beaty and we were surprised at what a gem this museum is, in the heart of the UBC Campus. The exhibition was superb! The spectacular bird plumage juxtaposed with gorgeous vintage fabrics printed on metal plates (all photos are for sale) are a feast for the eyes. We also took in Ivan Sayer's talk which was a great lead-in to enjoying the exhibit. Ian gives his last lecture on May 4th, and if you are planning on going to this exhibit, listening to Ian's talk is well worth your hour. He's funny, knows his stuff, and you'll see the exhibit with different eyes. The only negatives is finding parking and locating the exhibit. If you're lost, the bookstore is open and they will direct you. Download and print a UBC map before you go, and you'll find the museum quicker. And, enjoy the campus..it's fabuous in Spring!

It is sooo cool. The museum looks tiny on the street facade, I thought there is only a huge skeleton and that's all. But there is a large display area underground like a huge library! There are numerous specimen of animals and plants, definitely worth visiting. Since they have some of the shelves closed because of different display requirements or issues during some period of the time, I think it would be great to get a membership/annual pass and to visit couple of times year round. I just love it so much.

They squeezed a ton of displays into the basement area, you will have lots of things to look at. The presentation leaves much to be desired because some of the specimens are behind wire mesh glass.

Awesome place to learn about all living creatures on earth through out different ages. The place is huge and you can easily spend hours here. I really loved this place and I recommend everyone to check this place out.

Takes a long time to see everything. OK if you are really into animals, bugs and the like. They have put many of the exhibits in these small windows in rows of walls arranged in this huge dark room.

This museum has a couple of million artifacts. Most are locked away, but many of the more exciting items are on display. There is a hands on area where you can hold and touch artifacts. The place was able to keep the attention of my 6 year old.

Great place to visit as someone who loves biology. Lots of specimens and clear information layout. Most speciemens are preserved as skins or formaldehyde. Some skeletons and taxidermy but not a lot. Overall I really enjoyed it and spent about 1.5 hrs here
