Here you will be able to see all the opinions of real people like you who bought the services and products of St. Catharines Museum & Welland Canals Centre (Museum) around Niagara Falls area (Canada).
To this day this business has a score of 4.5 stars out of 5 and this rating was based on 127 reviews.
As you can read, the average score it has is almost the best, and it's based on a very large number of reviews, so we can say that the rating is very reliable. If people have bothered to leave their opinion when they are pleased with the business, is that it works.
You know that we don't usually stop to put tatings when they are correct and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or incidence...
This Museum belongs to the category of Museum.
Great place to bring the kids and get away from the crowds by the Falls. Watched a massive bulk carrier ship come through, really interesting. Grabbed some food nearby and ate at the picnic tables. Nice museum too. Great fun
Been visiting since the 1990s. Always a new display. As usual, I enjoyed my recent trip here. What a nice way for St. Catharines & Welland Museum to preserve the past.
Watched the coast guard go through the lock. Really neat
Well maintained... Could have been bigger
A viewing area to see the ships going through a lock in the Welland Canal. Check the lock status online before going to know approximate time for arrival of ships. Playground for kids, picnic tables, inside clean washrooms and a small gift shop.
The locks are very cool. I wish there was an easier way to check the boat schedule online before visiting, but it was a great visit. I really liked the museum as well.
Managed to watch the crossing of the ships
What a great way to learn about the famous Welland Canal! And how marvelous to stand so close to the gigantic ships going through the lock #3 right next to the museum. Fascinating to learn how the locks work and the history of the canal in St. Catharines. The local history elements of the museum are very informative and well put together. Really enjoyed the air conditioning today too! Lots of parking. Saw two ships!
Some fun St. Catharines history for free. Definitely worth a visit!
There is a Big, Full, Museum of the Canels and Great Ship's. Plus, you can go out on the platform to watch a ship move through the lock. Visit if you haven't..
Great experience, customer service representative was very pleasant, bathroom's well kept. It's under renovation, so lots of important things to see are covered.
Interesting place, very nice staff. Even good for the kids of young ages.
This place is great if you like to see big boats you have, all you need for the family to have a great time. After all it free.
Nice place to spend time in if you have an extra hour to spare in the area. Surprisingly fun and informative local history, with a few interesting items on display.
Friendly staff and a Really nice museum
I love watching the ships here. It's so interesting to watch the water level in the canal rise as that's when you get a great view of the ships & all the people hard at work on them. It can be quite busy with bus tours stopping through, but so worth it. You can go online to check what ships are coming through & learn what they are transporting & where they originate. Grab a pamphlet for some interesting information about the canal. Visit the museum & gift shop for souvenirs; the prices are reasonable.
Nice place to see. Attended a birthday party in their upstairs room. Nice and clean. Had facilities to ensure we could entertain 30 people plus and everything went well. Also a boat came through the canal which made the day that much better
Pretty location by the Welland canal. Plenty of free parking and picnic tables for enjoying the view
Great little community museum with a huge collection. The pics are behind the scenes.
Fun adventure with a lot of interesting facts from the areas past
Great place to watch the canal in action and the history of it.
Small, but cute. The museum is just okay but little kids seem to like it. I'd say age 2-4 would probably be the most interested (unless you have a ship lover in the family). There's a couple interactive things for them to do. I think the nicest part of it is that you can see the big ships come through the canal in behind the museum. Today we saw 2 come through in the two hours we were there. There is also a large playground out front. If you live around here you should see it once just because.
Nice event venue, view of the ships passing through the locks.
Great little museum. Very professionally laid out. Watch big ships go through the Welland canal on-site.
Friendly staff and interesting exhibition of local history.
A hidden gem that is under appreciated - great collection, lots of local history (that is deeply linked to Canadian history). Wonderful volunteers & staff. Also includes the Lacrosse Museum and National Hall of Fame.
Great trip to see the locks as well
Small, but well done. The viewing platform for the canal is worth the visit alone.
I went on a weekend evening when the museum was closed, however watching a ship go through the lock was interesting. I can't imagine watching it a second time, but still intriguing the first time.
I take all out of town visitors to Lock 7 to show them the history of the area.
I loved it. Great experience in just 1 hour. The best of it was to see a ship going through the lock station... Super cool!
Interesting little local museum alongside the mechanics of transferring ships from one lake to another within the Great Lakes.
Interesting little local museum alongside the mechanics of transferring ships from one lake to another within the Great Lakes.
Inexpensive, informative. Good gift shop
Great experience watching a ship go through the lock
It's a small museum but well laid out and accessible.
Protocols helped group feel comfortable inside for tour.
Great place to see. Nice museum and the opportunity to watch a ship go through the lock system
Great time !
It had a perfect view of the locks and gave a ton of good information on the history of the locks
The viewing platform is great for watching ships pass through the lock.
Great viewing area lots of parking
Had a great family gathering this afternoon. Perfect place for special occasions!
I highly recommend checking there website for ship arrivals before visiting the museum at lock 3. There are a lot of informative displays for one to explore. There are accessible parking and entrance is available.
The Great museum for Niagara falls and its historical story.
Great space for a party upstairs! Wonderful spot to see the ships come in.
Such a fantastic museum to see. The museum is home to the bridge where you can go and see the locks up close in action compared to the fences along the road way.
We saw a coast guard vessel go through with the kids. Really cool!
Very interesting place to see the workings of the Welland canal and locks
Great museum. Very nice venue!
Such and interesting place to learn about the canal system as well as St. Catharines. A great way to spend an afternoon!
We arrived just in time to see a freighter pass through Lock#3. This is a neat place! The viewing platform let's you get a good look at the lock operations. The attached museum was a nice treat, too. Inside, you will find a daily schedule of what boats are due to arrive and when. Be sure to drop a little donation in the lock box to show your support of this unique activity/opportunity. The place is spotlessly clean, educational and fun all wrapped up into one experience.
A well managed and organized museum. Be sure to visit the Welland Canal Fallen Workers Memorial at the north end of the property.
A nice setting directly adjacent to the locks. Informative displays. Admission is by donation/pay what you can. Well worth a visit.
Great location outside
Not a big place but very knowledgeful. Good to know the 1st canal is exactly 90 years old. When you take kids to cycle on the way, this is a super stop to have a break, icecream, and check at the lock if a big ship is elevating.
The fences are too high and thick, we couldnt see anything properly
Great place to enjoy a picnic when travelling along the QEW Niagara from the USA border to Toronto. Watching s ship go through the locks is an amazing and educational excursion. Washroom facilities and a great children's plaground are available. Plenty of shaded picnic tables are perfect for relaxing picnics.
For me this museum place is the nice place to relaxing and you're watching the boat traffic, on de canard up and down watter movement upstairs view the boat ares app side working for all family to enjoy and they have food place , souvenir store, the picture of antique time and the tools
Great spot to take the kids to watch the ships go through the locks.
Informative
Nice small museum, great for a quick stop.
Nice day, nice walk. Been nice to see some ships, but I am early.
Nice location on the Welland Canal. Worth stopping by.
Kind of a hidden gem. Quite impressive if you happen to be there when a ship is passing thru
Amazing place, lots to enjoy and educate yourself about the lock systems.
Nice place to visit. Great museum with lots of artifacts.
Very nice museum. Amazing view outside. You can view all the huge boats crossing. This is something you can't miss.
Amazing place to visit and see the ships navigate through the locks. Connected to the welland canal parkway which could be used for cycling and running.
I love to see the Lakers go through. ..some of the shipmen throw coins of their country to the kids ???? Heartwarming
Learned that Lacrosse was invented by Native Americans and a whole lot more in the museum. Bring a snack when you come you could be waiting a while for the freighter to come thru.
Nice shady area to rest on a bike ride along the Welland Canal
Beautiful place to know a little of history of Canada.
Interestimg little museum on tje canal. Also houses the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Nice to see Gaylord Powless again. I sure remember the Brantford Warriors lacrosse team.
This is a really cool history of the Welland Canal system. We spent a.few hours here on a rainy day.
Watching a ship laboriously lumber into view over the span of 45 minutes was quite possibly one of the best experiences of my life. Second to watching paint dry, of course. Nothing beats that.
Really fun outing! If you are taking guests to visit or just stopping by with the family, this is a great way to learn and have fun. The museum is very informative and actually well put together. Something for the whole family! Just make sure you call or check the website for ship timings so you don't end up waiting for hours! Enjoy!
Welland Canal History that deserves to be heard. This visit was so worth it!
So amazing to have a space such as this that is open to the public and designed for both kids and adults, it is just big enough and has much character and many areas to explore, perfect for a jaunt or a stop as you bike along the canal, there is a play structure outside for kids to romp on and ice cream available at the museum shop and a wonderful rocking boat inside for everyone's fun!
Just an awesome sight to see. A true marvel..
It's a good place to see and learn about ships and freighters up close.
A very interesting museum - packed full of a wide variety of informative displays and wonderful artifacts. Once you have finished inside check out the viewing station outside and watch the massive ocean bound cargo ships navigate the Lock. Great for all ages.
It is very informative museum. You can see how the lock system works and also some other local history. It will be nice to check the schedule for the ships passing through the lock and you will be amazed to see one from here. You can also see lifting of the bridge from here when the ship passes.
Watch out for the ship timings. The whole process of changing water levels is amazing
Cool place, check the website for approximate ship times. Arrive early or you could miss the ship, they only post approximate time arrivals to the locks. The locks raise or lower the ships in a sequence to bring the ship from sea level to the great lake water levels and back. The museum is free and will take an hour or so to look at.
The viewing platform is a cool way to see how the ships move throughout the canal!
Volunteered here for 4 years. Grey place to gain knowledge
I really nice place to park and access the canal-side path for your workout. Free parking too! Washrooms and food available. Interesting place to watch the ships go through the locks.
We have been living in Niagara for many years, we take our visitors to Lock 3. They're always impressed with the canal system. Great observation point.
I can spend all day here. Good public place!
Awesome experience! Loved seeing ships pass by us going up and down. The museum was also pretty good. Had a nice time down there.
Interesting piece of history. Cool to watch the boats rise and sink. Check the ship schedule online (or call)
Great place to see the boats pass through the canals at the back of the property. Wish the bars won't so high though, really obstructs your view and makes it difficult to take nice pictures.
Amazing, also u can see ship canal...
If you want to know about St Catharines' history and the Welland Canal - this is your stop!
Cool place to visit. I have been through the area dozens of times and never even knew this was there. Plan ahead, and you might get to see some pretty interesting ships passing through as well. Lots to see as far as the history of Canada's national sport - Lacrosse.
Been visiting since the 1990s. Always a new display. As usual, I enjoyed my recent trip here. What a nice way for St. Catharines & Welland Museum to preserve the past.
Lots of good history and preservation of St. Catharines and the Welland Canal. Amazing view of the lock and seeing the ships go through the locks. Place is clean and well maintained. Staff is helpful and polite. We went to go see Santa and did some crafts. Kids loved it!
I got lots of information about first auto industry in St. Catherine and much more. A good source of Welland canal info.Very well organized. I recommend it to everyone
Not a huge museum by any stretch but the facilities are clean, open, and free to enter.
Great place to watch the boats go through the lock and also learn a boat lacrosse history in Ontario.
A must see place! My wife and I really love the history in the museum....
This is not a good time to visit as a big part of the museum is under renovation and cannot be visited. The staff also couldn't advise when the renovations would be completed. Also since one of the main highlights of the museum is the viewing deck of lock 3, it would be nice if the schedule of the week is made available to the visitors. When we came the next schedule of ship passing was at 6 pm and museum closed at 5. We asked if they had the schedule for the following Tuesday but was told to just check it online.
Very interesting museum -good for kids
Free admission. Nice little museum with a few surprises. Children's play structure on the property as well.
Both museums on site are well maintained and provide excellent info. Visiting in the summer allows you to view the locks as well.
A great place to hang out, especially in summer and watch all those ships passing through.
Very informative museum detailing the history of the canal and an excellent viewing platform to observe vessels travelling through lock 3
Great history of the canal and surrounding area.
Very interesting place to take visitors even in the off season.
Great exhibits and a great viewing area for shipping that travel through the locks
Fascinating. I liked their info on the underground railroad
Great place on the route of Niagra falls. Due to Niagra falls no one noticed this place because of busy schedule but if you have kids and interested in science then visit this place when you can visit Niagra. Here water level of both side is not equal so minded people create one solution to pass ship from one side to another by waterlifting procedure and watching this process to pass ship from one side to another is amazing. So add this place in your visit list when you plan for Niagra it's 10 min away from Niagra
An amazing tourist spot to see on your way to our back from Niagara Falls.
Fabulous history. Wonderful exhibits. Free. Donations welcome.
The visitor's centre is really impressive, especially compared to the tiny trailer that used to be there when I was a kid.
Great displays and a awesome place to view the ships through the canal.
Love coming and watching the boats and love that the museum is free and has a kids area that they can explore all the staff have been really friendly
Very nice little museum about the Welland canal and local history. The view from lock 3 outside is great to watch how the locks work as well as both types of lift bridges up and down steam from the lock.
Great outing for the kids to learn about area history. Neat and informative
A very well done museum, plus the National Canadian Sport Lacrosse's hall of fame., plus the Welland canal equals a pretty great place to visit.
I really really loved this place. If you are stressed after work you should definitely go to this museum as its really a relaxing environment as well as you get to know all the history of welland canal formation and various other knowledge too. Great place to refresh your mind .
Interesting, go when a ship or boat is going through. We miss didn't.
It was a cool April day so we didn't hang around waiting for any ship to pass. But on nice days, it's fun to sit outside watching the ships pass through.
Nice place to see the history of the Welland Ship Canel.
Kids loved watching lake freighters go through the lock. Elevated viewing gives great views Good stop during a road trip. Has bathrooms and a gift shop.
Showcases the history of St. Catharines with artifacts and art pieces. A must see if you're touring the area and would love to learn more about Niagara.
We had the privilege of been able to see a sheep entering the canal was very exciting to see the process.. nice place to vicit.
Excellent experience. Must see ship using lock.
A simple, but esthetic and well managed museum.
Wonderful experience, thank you Sports Leisure!
It's fun to watch the ships as the transit the locks
Amazing park and a fun lookout of the lock ships passing through. The museum is a little outdated but still nice to go through with the family.
Amazing to see those ships come in!
Always a fun time. Fun cool and educational for all ages
Great place to watch the shots go thru the locks and learn about the history of the welland canal.
Nice museum with free parking. We went in the off season when the canal is empty, still a great time, very interesting museum! Ranging topics from the history of St Catharines, the underground railroad, World War I, lacrosse, and of course the Welland canal.
Great museum schedule your visit to coincide with the passing ship schedule. But overall it was worth the time.
Impressive Site, especially If one of the big ships is coming through. The very high fences are a bit disturbing, seems exaggerated.
I've been in the museum a couple of times... Lots of great exhibits and trinkets of St. Kitts gone by. The amount of time I've spent here in the parking lot just watching boats go by probably accounts for at least 85% of my spare time in past Summers. Try it some time.
Great place. Enjoyed going through the museum and then watching a ship go through the lock!
Very interesting to watch a ship going through the canal and the museum is very informative on many subjects.
Museum is fantastic . Could spend most of a day inside.
Watching the ship is the best part. My son loved it.
Great museum. Three museums in one actually, free of charge, free parking AND, the Welland canal right in front of you
So much history, had a great time!
We really enjoyed experiencing the boats coming through the locks. It was an amazing experience, we watched the Paul Martin Canada Steamship Lines go into Lock.1 and come up the canal and seen it come out Lock 2. It's well worth it and at Lock 3 you can see the Lakers being lifted/lowered in the lock. A must visit, it should be on everyone's bucket list. The museum was very informative as well. Admission is a donation to the museum. Friendly staff as well.
What an amazing place to watch the Lakers as they navigate lock 3. Well worth the visit!
Historical landmark.. Park, museum and loch and a bridge that open up to let ships through.
Awesome place to see.. museum next to a working canal lock... 2 birds - 1 Stone!
Awesome when there is a ship in the lock. Makes a great stop when driving along the canal.
Very neat to see a large freight liner come into the locks.
It's not much but it is enjoyable watching the boats pass through the canal from a high view
Great place for viewing ships going up and down the lock system on the Welland Canal.
Great place to spend the day watching the locks fill and drain allowing the ships to come and go. They have the cutest little gift shopever!!!! As well as a museum quite pretty and you get to actually play with certain items
Great little place to take the kids for an afternoon. Playground, space to run around outside and look at things, and the museum keeps them interested with the variety of exhibits they have
Watch the ships go up and down the lock. Be sure to spend time inside the museum.
Great place to see ships near to you. I enjoyed my visit.
My family including our dog enjoyed waiting and watching the ship pass through Lock#3. Awesome.
Great place to view ships
When you look at the ships. You really dont know how big they are unless you are standing right next to one.
First time visit, was lucky to find a ship passing the canal
I was actually blown away at how much stuff the museum had about the niagara region, from the canal to the war to sport and industry and the current day! It was presented very cleanly and easy to follow. I could have spent all day browsing and reading. And it was all free! I highly recommend this local treasure
There is so much to see and learn inside and out. And it's free, with donations requested. We spent 3 hours here, much if it on the viewing stands watching how the locks work to move large cargo ships in and out.A find! The ride from Niagara Falls was probably about 15 mins. on the highway and then on one or two secondary roads.
Interesting place. Kids had a good time, although it takes longer for a ship to go through a lock than I it would. Museum is good and has lots of interesting displays.
fantastic, educational spot. a great way to spend an afternoon and so much to learn! it's very cool watching the boats move through the locks
A little short on some details and a bit confused s to what the museum is supposed to be about. But a good time none the less. A solid way to spend the hour.
This place is awesome. Lots of historical items to view and things to read. If visual isn't enough for you they have audio too! Photography is allowed. Has observation lounge and decks so you can watch ships pass through lock 3 inside or outside. Has a small snack bar with coffee machine and light snacks, and a neat gift shop. Worth a visit for sure. While no admission fee per say, a donation of $4 per person is good. (Or more if you like!) ALSO they have the actual red ryder carbine action 200 shot range model air rifle from the cult classic movie 'A Christmas Story' and really, how cool is that.
Great place to see the canal in action. Unique place and there is a playground for kids.
Great experience. Check schedule ahead of time to plan to visit when the boats are going through.
Great place to learn about the building of the canal and view ship's from a platform being raised and lowered in the canal lock
Much more than i expected! I brought my 2 children (12 and 10 year old) and they stayed interested for approximately an hour inside the building. I will bring them again when the weather gets warmer!
Very neat to watch the ships come
I took a tour with my university class and I really enjoyed learning lots of new things about my city. We even got to go in the basement where they have tons of extra things in storage. That was neat. Unfortunately we were under time constraints so I didn't get to see all the displays. But I took some pictures of our proudest heritage moment: the time they filmed that scene A Christmas Story ????
Hubby likes to watch the ships. This was a nice place with neat museum. The viewing is closer than the Soo which was fun.
This brings you right to the southern top of the locks. Great parking and views.
Saw a huge tanker get raised up, amazing to see! Right after, a cruise ship was lowered . Amazing to see how it works!
Terrific place to learn about local history. Plenty of interactive exhibits. The gift shop is well-stocked with books about Niagara's history.
An amaizing experience to see the ships being lowered feom one level to a lower one!!!!
Great little museum! Nice that it’s attached to the lock so you can watch boats go through
Pretty awesome! Watching the boat going in and out of the lock was great even at night. I will be back to watch during the day. So cool. I look forward to seeing the museum as well. Lots of fun for the kids playground and educational ???? The H2O highway
Wonderful resource . Beautiful place. Easily accessible. Would like to see native crafts for sale in gift shop. They used to have.
Nice place!! Cool to see the ships come in!! For reference, we visited August 2018
Great place to explore the history of the Canal. Great experience to see the locks in operation.
Beautiful area for a nice quiet outing with family. Museum was interesting and informative. I and my group enjoyed our afternoon here.
Great experience. It was pretty cool to see the ships raising and lowering in the lock. There's free parking, a small museum and a park where you can have a picnic.
Wonderful place to view Lock 3 in action as the ships are raised or lowered to continue their journey. The museum itself is full of interesting artifacts that tell stories of St. Catharines and area. Admission is by donation.
Great place to spend and explore the local history. Nice staff, clean place and surprisingly exciting. All the fun and it is completely FREE. Very recommended !!!
More museum than I expected! restrooms, a shop, and outside are facilities to view the lock systems, some artwork, picnic tables and an awesome kids' playground.
Very nice experience to see the ships go up and down the locks.
Visited on the Welland Canal bike trail, good place to get knowledge about early years
Way more than I expected. Interesting to watch the boats go through the lock, plus a free local museum and lots of tourist info
Very cool place! Cool place to see the Welland Canal!
Great place denoting the local history of the area and the folk that helped make it that way. Also some excellent displays pertaining to WW1 as well as the Welland Canal itself.
I love visiting this place every time I visit Niagara Falls. Love the museum. The best part is when the ships are passing through the gates. It's amazing to see the whole process.
Great family spot. Museum and Welland Canal experience is good. Small gift shop and childrens play area. Awesome spot for a picnic.
Well worth a visit, great place to view the ships using a lock. The exhibits are interesting and informative, but it sould use more interactive staff.
Great place to take the kids educational and really interesting
Interesting, you actually see a big ship in small lock
Cool spot to take the kids to see how cargo ships pass through the welland canal through lockes...its free too and has a small museum of some CDN history
If you like museums and history it's good. Not my thing. Went because hubby wanted to go.
Had good time.
Nice, clean and friendly staff at the museum. Alot of information to learnt. Surely will visit again.
Very nicely done! Be sure to go out and watch the boats go through the canal locks.
An interesting little museum, worth an hour (or more in a ship is going through) of your time if in the area. Not fancy, but satisfactory tidbits for the curious.
It's a wonderful place with a lot of history and heritage about St. Catharines and the surrounding regions in Niagara Falls.
Is amazing how much history is inside this place!
This building is absolutely fascinating. You have a great view of the lock and the big ships that enter there. It's worth a visit.
A touch of Canadian history and highly recommend on your way to the falls. Take a moment to absorb and possibly watch a ship go by. You will not be disappointed.
Beautiful day to be outside people and dog watching.
So beautiful we arrived ith ma father who is a retired boat captain and sitting at loch #3 was the Algoma Discovery so calm and peaceful worth the visit if boats are in the canal 10/10
This is the best place to visit if you want to learn about the history of St. Catherine and the canal. There are no entry tickets. The museum is not big but it has some valuable artifacts around St Catherine. Also there is a nice gift shop too. Do not forget to go to the observation deck and see how ships are lifted. During the winter season locks are not in operation.
Loved seeing a big ship come thru n then a sail boat and a yacht.
Love this little museum. Always clean, well lit, and have informative volunteers sing that find mind chatting.
A must to spend time and look at the wonderful, free museum but especially to watch ships go through the locks.
Great location for seeing the lock system at work...AMAZING!! Learned a lot about the surrounding community.
Very well maintained. Hope to return again when the barges are running.
It's free. A good place
I can understand a no liquids policy in the building, but taking a bottle away from a baby? Seriously?
If you are hoping to understand better the city and it’s history, the museus will be a great starting point. The area is very well maintained, full of information, curious facts and original items. Definitely try to go in the time a ship is passing through the canal as it’s a super fun thing to watch and learn about the whole process.
Very interesting to see the locs in action and inside museum has a lot of history unknown to many
Great place to watch large ships go thru the welland canal
Good to visit if you can timed it and see the locks in operation. Otherwise, a quick visit should be suffice.
Just had my family reunion Christmas dinner there great hall great little museum a lot of history wheelchair accessible gift shop nice clean friendly people recommended for family parties family gatherings are just somebody that wants to just know what it's like to be around the locks and how it works from then and now sincerely yours Robert had an awesome time
A favorite place for Nordic Pole Walking on Monday mornings! Building open by appointment only, Covid-19 precautions.
Christmas in July, so glad we came down tonight. Great viewing platform to see the ships ho by in the canal, staff very friendly. Enjoyed the exhibits, may be small but great use of space
Get up close and personal with GIANT lake freighters going through the locks. Marvel at the feat of engineering that this place is. Best part? Its free. Free admission. Free parking.. Bring your camera. Estimated ship times available on line. Highly recommend.
Informative about lock system. AV also available to visitors to visualize mechanism.
Free admission. Great place to stop off before hitting the Falls. Interesting exhibits and learnt some history here.
Super fun experience to watch the boats pass. Kids loved it.
Nice view of the ships
So neat to view the history of the Niagara region, the construction and evolution of the various canals, and the origins of lacrosse! There is even a small court to try it out!
Nice tourist attraction! Very interesting place!
Awesome place to visit... I highly recommend it
Quiet relaxing place. Good educational museum about the Welland Canal. Ideal for a picnic too. Unfortunately the ship times are not posted in advance
Enjoyed the day. Staff lovely, cute gift shop. Was lucky enough to be there when 2 ships went thru locks
Really beautiful museum. Well worth going and exploring
This is not only a museum but Welland canal passing by it make this place worth visiting. There is simple but decent monument for fall worker make this place a wonderful place to visit and spend time with family and friend
When the bridge is open, you must wait around 15 minutes, and more if are 2 ships
They have little bit of everything about amazing history in this place it was a very nice experience.
???? ????
Excellent museum that helps you understand the lock system and local history. Very good WWI exhibit. Admission by donation.
Can see how a big ship passing a canal!
Cool museum and awesome place to view the ships going thru the canal!
Interesting museum, great viewing area to watch the boats with a picnic.
Pretty cool spot to stop and check out. There's an observation deck to view everything, but it has a limited capacity right now, due to covid. There is decent sized park for kids to play on, and a decent amount of parking.
Amazing center telling the history of the great Lakes locks, actually saw ships coming through
Great place especially for younger ones. Check ship time before going.
Nice place to take someone from out of town. As a local it was still interesting to see some of the things they had in the museum. The best part of it was being so close to the ships as they go through the canal.
It's a really nice museum and property. Very well maintained, very clean, with excellent staff. The property around the museum is well maintained and appealing, an excellent place to stop and rest along the bike paths, or watch laker ships pasa by. The gift shop is great with items of varied interests (they sell some really good hot sauce from PEI) They are extremely proactive with their covid procedures, including signing a guest book upon entry, barriers and one way markers, They even close 4 times a day to do cleaning (This place is probably the safest place to visit during the covid pandemic)
Jus like the Panama canal
awesome museum. I cant believe these exhibits were free to experiance
Great spot to watch the ships come through the lock. The observation platform puts you right up close and next to the lock. However the tall fence between the platform and lock is a let down and can often obstruct the view.
Beautiful venue to see the ships pass through the Welland Canal
Free museum, fun and very informative!
Attended a birthday party in the room upstairs. It was a nice big open space with tons of windows to let in light. There were a number of upholstered chairs as well as some round tables with plastic chairs. There was a small kitchenette. The view was great although it was winter so we couldn't watch any ships coming through the lock. I can imagine this would be fantastic during the shipping season. The one down side is that there are no bathrooms on the same floor as the party room. You need to take the stairs or elevator down to the main floor to use the washroom. Other than that it is a cool venue for a small/medium party.
Had a great time. Ship locks were fantastic and cute little musium too. We liked the gift shop very much
This place is awesome.
This was a great place to visit with my 3 year old. We played pirates at the amazing park shaped like a ship. Then we did a scavenger hunt to explore all the amazing item they have displayed such as a cannon, propeller, anchors, and the museum. The museum is cute and has a lot of great facts about the area and the canals and there is a great memorial for the fallen workers that passed while making the canal. The viewing area is a great place to get a birds eye view of the ships. I wish there was a little cafe or something there. But there are plenty of picnic tables.
Very historic museum with lots of information....
Very interesting place. You can time your visit to watch a ship go through the locks.
Very cool place to see cargo ships from the Lakes going through the locks.
I think it is the coolest museum to go too. Different in many cool ways
Great place for the family, see Lakers go through the locks with a museum to walk around in.
What an experience to see the ship passing through the canal. The museum exhibit is excellent.
Great inforrmative exhibits in the museum and great viewing of the ship in the lock.
We watched a yacht go through the canal and toured the museum. Very enjoyable
Arrived in time to catch a freighter coming. So awesome to see this happen right in front of you. Viewing is so easy. Lots if picnic tables so we grabbed our lunch for a leisurely day. Highly recommend!
Great museum with good views outside
Kids and I just discovered this museum, after living here our whole lives ???? The lady at the desk offered the kids a wagon of toys to drag around with them to follow the information sections, which was so cute! The gift shop is pricey for nick nacks but always so neat to look around. The lady there is always smiling and so friendly and patient.
Not impressed with the food. Service was great though.
I work on the ships and this a great way to learn the basics of the Seaway system, nice display models and gift shop
Great viewing platform and the museum has such a great wealth of information of the history of the canal building and early settlers of this area. Also some informative volunteers standing by to answer questions. Pack a lunch and check online when the next boat passes through.
Great little museum, lots of interesting info about the area. Viewing platform was a great place to watch how the canal works.
Very nice, lots of history & historical artifacts
Small maritime and local historical museum. Indoor and outdoor activities, playground and small gift shop.
A very nice facility with outstanding staff, but very little change in the displays from when it originally opened.
Excellent day or half day out. Very well organized and with up close views of the ships in the lock. The Volunteer guide Des was very well informed and helpful. Highly recommended.
Nice place. I stopped here because the bridge to Niagara on the falls was closed and did not regret. Spent some time with friends dining outside then continued the trip
It is a good place to see one of the great architecture from Ontario
Great place to spend an afternoon
Some exhibits are large and overpowering while others barely exits. Unfortunatedly space is limited, could and should be 3 to 4 times the size with everything that is in storage.
A marvelous peice of examples of engineering. Once in a lifetime, one must see this engineering master peice. Two different levels of lake water steering big ships safely and savings lot of travel time. Please see and take your kids to experience what engineering is !!
A beautiful place enjoy the walk museum entrance is by a donation, very friendly the museum is so beautiful and lots of heritage
It's a good place to go out spend some time with your loved ones and watch the ships go through lift gates
Ok, not to much to see
Loved observing the tankers manouver through the locks. Museum is so interesting. Great little souvenir shop too
Great museum and a good overview of the locks and history behind
Nice spot to stop on the way to Niagara Falls Try to check for ship arrival times
Fantastic place to view Welland Canal Traffic. Great place for books & souvenirs on the Great Lakes or local history. Great, thought provoking exhibits for all ages. Grounds are also great for impromptu picnics during the right season.
Nicely done. Interesting exhibits. Also interesting to see a ship come through the locks.
I come here every time I can I love the free museum best place to watch the ships in the locks
Though we didn't go inside, we had such a wonderful time watching the ships pass through - what a great activity to kill some time and see cool things!
Apparently the ship schedule is only an estimate. We made the almost 2 hour drive to the canal only to find out the schedule had changed and the next ship woukd be going through the locks at 4:00. A 2 hour delay! Be warned.
Park was fun for the kids museum was closed when we went
Very interesting. Clean. Bathrooms. U can see a ship moving thru the welland canal
Brought my niece here a few weeks ago for the first time. She thought the museum was very informative and would love to come again. Would suggest this as a field trip for all students in and around the area.
Very helpful and informative staff, interesting historical displays and they even had a gender inclusive bathroom! Definitely would be recommending this to friends and family
Great little museum. If you time your visit you can watch a boat go through the lock
Awesome little place..Watching ships come through the locks was amazing!
Pretty darn interesting to see a 600 foot long ship go thru what is essentially a water elevator. The museum inside is informative and covers everything from war to sports to the migration of the falls.
A wonderful experience to see a ship navigate a loch. Nice upper deck for viewing easy parking. Definitely a nice free thing to do
Lock 3 viewing bridge is a great place to watch the big ships going up or down in the canal. The bridge can be accessed from the museum. The museum has great collection of artifacts that tells you the story how the canal was built. Lacrosse hall of fame is also a great part of the museum. No entry fees
Great place to see the large ships up close. Nice little museum of local history
Free entry, gift shop, clean bathrooms, cafeteria with indoor and outdoor seating, good ice cream, friendly staff, Canadian lacrosse museum very interesting, lots of information on travel in surrounding areas and the best part is seeing massive cargo ships go thru the lock! Wow
Great viewing platform to watch the lake boats go through the locks
NICE PLACE TO GO FOR A WALK OR JOGGING WITH THE FAMILY, YOUR DOG OR JUST YOURSELF.
A nice experience. Very Interesting the ships moving levels
Very interesting learned alot great spot to view shops
Great place to learn about the canal and get close to the ships as they pass through.
Nice place and staff are very helpful and big ships
Kids love watching ships travel through the qelland canal and this is a fun place to let them learn more about the area around us
Nice and small museum in St. Cathrines. Good spot on the way from Toronto to Niagra Falls. You can check on their website the Schedule for the ships crossing the canal.
Great place to learn about Canadian History. Viewing of the canal is free of charge and a schedule is available. One can easily spend the whole day there.
Excellent clean location for the kids to walk and watch the ships in the canal. Playground on site as well.
Great place to watch the big ships go through the locks. A fantastic playground for the kids which looks like a boat. Museum and gift shop were very nicely done.
Great displays and a very knowledgeable museum staff.
We had a chance to see a tanker being raised in the locks and it was incredible. The museum is very cool too. Worth the visit.
I love to look at the ship climb the mountain though the Welland Cannel. The museum is just a great place to visit.
Free museum. Very informative. Coffee and treats at the gift store.friendly staff.great place for the whole family
I can't understand why there would be a museum at the locks that has a store that you can't purchase a boat from. I took my grandson there and thought I will stop in and grab a boat at store in the museum. Surprised to find out there was no boats to be bought
Great place to take your kids especially in the summer. It's free and educational as well they have a park for when they want to run and burn off steam.
If you like large ships, this place will get you right up close. The museum is right on the wall of Lock 3, and has a really nice viewing platform right next to the lock. You don't get any closer unless you are on the ship itself. There is a nice museum with all sorts of displays on the Welland Canal and the entire seaway system. Has bathrooms and gift shop. You have to look for the Fallen Workers memorial, a tribute to those who died building the Welland canal. It is a bit to the north, and has a listing of all those men who were killed over the years.
A very informative museum. A treasure for the city.
Fabulous museum. Especially loved standing on the viewing platform and watching the big cargo ships going through the locks.
To much to do about nothing, no details a ship going to the bottom before it actually set sail, boring
This place is interesting.
Fairly small museum, but it has an active lock (Lock 3) that if you're lucky, you can catch a glimpse of transport ships passing through. There is a little lacrosse alley for you to try out your skills as well.
Great place, nice bridge to go up on and watch boats in the canal.
Great scenery and knowledgeable about the locks.
A great way to experience up and close how a lock functions on the Welland Canal. Interesting museum inside main building. Exterior memorial to the lives lost during construction of the canal. Free parking. Recommend as a stop for people visiting the Niagara region. Bring a lunch with you and enjoy while sitting outside on the well maintained grounds.
Cool museum and visitors center. We checked this place out and lots of cool history on display. It's a free visit. Also a great viewing platform for the ships locking thru lock 3. Gift shop and bathrooms also inside. If you are a fan of the Christmas Story movie there is a display of memorabilia in the museum.
Excellent spot to see the locks in action. Learned a ton from one of the volunteers there. He was great!
It is fantastic to see how they do the water in the Canel to lower the water just like the Panama Canal a ship just came through the canel.
Helpful and friendly staff. Very enjoyable for the family. A lot of historical artifacts there, not just lock related. Most recommended. There is also a very nice park and cycle track. Most recommended when in the area.
Learned a lot about the lock system if you like big ships this is the place for you
Nice getaway for the weekend
Very cool and informative. So glad we stopped as we were traveling through!
Very nice place to see how the canal works. There is seating inside if you are tired and want to watch in comfort. There is also an entire floor that we didn't get to spend much time in as we had to leave. But it is full of interesting pieces of history not limited to the canal.
Great place for all ages. Museum is well thought and very informative. Try to catch a ship going through the locks.
The Lock is really cool... check the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway site for Lock 3 estimated ship arrival times. The expanded museum is well done. The staff are friendly and helpful.
Great place to watch the big ships go thru.
This is a very nice little museum, with lots of information on St. Catherines and the Welland canal. There is a viewing platform outside where we watched a freighter go through the lock.
A must see when you visit Niagara region. Nice open air atmosphere where you learn to be patient by raising and lowering the ships at the lock gate. No washrooms when musuem is closed.
Love watching the ships pass thru the locks!
Lots to see and do. You can watch large ships navigate the lock on Welland Canal
Lock no. 3 is a good place to come watch ships entering and exiting. Check schedule online to plan visit.
Informative, with nice observation deck to watch boats go through lock 3.
Super neat place to go if you have an interest in the seaway or the city's history
Very interesting background to the town and the canal kids loved playing the lacrosse excellent for a 60 min trip
Loved going here. Got there a bit early to see a ship go through the lock. Nice museum and movie.
Nice museum. Lots of local history. It is worth the hour it takes to see the whole thing.
A turistic place to learn about the Chanel and ships movement from the balcony and inside the museum. The park next to the complex is amazing for children.
Nice local museum with the Canada Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the Welland Canal locks. Clean bathrooms and have a nice souvenir shop. Free parking.
Excellent place to take kids. Especially to experience the passage of mighty ships through the canal.
Educational and great place to look at the working lock...from indoors while it's snowing
Nice place bring the family. Museum is free, donations do help. During the shipping season, late March till end of December. You be able to see boats going through the locks.
wonderful facility full of excellent displays and information. admission is by donation. staff very helpful. great COVID-19 safety protocols in place. highly recommend a visit here.
When you get bored at the locks... and decide to do a "photo shoot"
The museum was very detailed and educational. It was nice to learn about how the canals worked and its history in Ontario. Kids enjoyed....
All locals should visit at least once. Don't forget to donate!
Closed due to covid but absolutely great place. Recommend a visit when things reopen
Very interesting and informative. Check the schedule before going to find out times the ships are scheduled to come through the locks.
Timing was good, watched boat go thru!
It's very interesting watching the canal and the boats go through. It's time consuming obviously bc you have to wait for the canal to fill up. But the kids enjoyed it. As for the museum, it had a lot of interesting facts and some cool cars in it.
Such a unique experience! We timed it so a freighter was going through the lock and we watched from the bridge!
Nice little museum, quite a bit to see
Nice place, well layout. Could use a snackbar while waiting on ships.
Beautiful place got to see so many ancient pictures
Park for the kids, bathrooms. You can take your dog into the foyer of the museum! So fun!
love coming here to watch the ships pass through the locks
Very educational experience....lots of excellent information about the canals/boats and the area
Absolutely love this place. The museum is excellent and free of charge. I recommend donating though. Simple $10 and you can kill and hour in here. If you are interested at all in mechanics and the canal this will teach you how it all works and the history of the Welland canal.
Excellent museum. Very informative
It's cool to see the boats go through the locks here
Great location to get some history on the Welland Canal and also watch the ships go through the lock. Also have a good lacrosse museum at that location.
Very small in size and disappointing in reference to African-American history/contributions in Canada; story was incomplete.
Nice to see big boats coming up and down the canal.
Fun place to visit, always intriguing to see the boats.
Kids always have a blast, i enjoy the local history and the travelling exhibits that they change through.
A very beautiful place. Especially if you catch a ship thru the path
Cute place to look back in time to the local areas past heritage.
Very cool place to visit, cost of a donation to enter. And you can see the boats moving down the canal
Informative, clean and easy to find ????
Daughter had her baby shower upstairs beautiful spot
A nice quiet place to enjoy the boats going through the locks with a viewing platform. Also, enjoyed seeing the exhibits in the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Was surprised by a couple notable names not inducted yet though.
Very nice museum. Good viewing platform for lock 3
Was great to see the boats going through the locks!
This was a really cool place to visit. We were lucky enough to arrive as a big ship was going through the port and it was fun to watch.
Very interesting! We did not see any ships,so I am going to visit the place again.
Must time this to watch a ship pass through the lock! Amazing engineering!!!
This is a wonderful place to take the family. It's fascinating and with luck you can watch ships passing through the lock from the viewing platform.
I always love watching the ships go through there. Sounds funny but we’re I’m from we don’t see anything like this. The ship crews always wave back to me when I wave. That’s so nice of them to stop and wave.
Nice
Small but very insightful, loved the place.
Love watching the big ships come into the locks
Learned quite a bit about the canal system and got to see it in action from a viewing deck.
Lacrosse "HOF"...who new????⁉️
Very nice place to see the ships go through the canal
Never knew this gem was here! As awesome as the Panama canals..just more up close and personal. Watch a ship go through this engineering feat on a clear sunny day at Lock number 5 or 8
Very interesting history of the area. Lots of antique items to view.
Nice to see this amazing structure
Lots of good info and great vantage point to watch the ship pass through the lock.
Nice place for some history. Wish a ship was in the locke when I visited. Overall make the stop to see it.
Wow! Stunned at the efficiency of these big ships coming in and going out. They say, like a well oiled machine. Well, they have this machine finely tuned! First off, the platform that is built in the back, at the Gate, is amazing! Great views no matter where you are on it. You are able to watch the ships going down when the water level is dropping for the next leg in their journey, or going up in the opposite direction. We we're lucky the day we chose to visit. One of the Captains came out onto the bow to watch over things. He wasn't out there long, but he was out there long enough for me to ask if I could take his picture. Very thankful I asked. I was able to look up information on him and the ship. You can actually go online to different sites and follow the ships if you get the ship name. You can find out where it originates from. Had we not gone, like a friend suggested, we would have missed out on a truly amazing site to behold! If we ever get back up that way, we will be going back!
Love watching the big tankers come through the locks. Museum is a must for history buffs. I learned so much about the Welland Canal system and the people that built it. St Catherines was also a big part and final refuge for those that came through the underground railroad from the south. Outside grounds have a great park and playground.
A favorite destination. So happy they had a vendor with a barbecue selling hot food, burgers and sausages, such a bonus when cycling in this area. Come see the locks and museum!
Small but worth a fast trip. Pay what you want museum about Canadians and world war one, building of locks and canal. Movie is boring. Don't bother. Watch a ship in the locks. It was cool. One of the docents was anti American and blamed America for 9/11. Disgraceful.
Great museum and a wonderful location to watch the ships go through the welland locks
They have a very informative and friendly staff was a great experience...thank you
I didn't know about this museum until a few months ago. It is free to visit (they do accept donations) and we thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits. There is plenty to see but not so much that it's overwhelming. The location on the canal is lovely and it would be a beautiful spot to visit in the good weather.
Great place for getting a Kurig coffee and watching ships go through lock 3.
A great getaway place for me to hang out while watching ships go by Loads of parking and people don't bother you Very safe place to hang out especially if you enjoy staying inside your vehicle Turn on your radio Recline your seats and lean back Life is good Does not cost you any money to park there
Very nice and good display busy time to
