Unlike other historical heritage sites that simply list the history, the commerce, the furniture, etc., this attraction utilizes a great sociological spin (as is represented by a sign that states: No Antique Roadshow here!) The colonial presence is certainly represented but so too is the dissidence of the locals who brought change through civil disobedience, use of the predominant media at the time (new papers), and powerful petition writing. I was pleasantly surprised how the displays brought to life these aspects of St. John's culture in that era. When you pay admission you are also allowed to tour the Newman Wine Vaults in town.

Also toured the Commisariat's House dating back to the 1700's. They had bean counters back then. Lot of history here. Place has been kept in great shape.

This is a nice example of 1800s St John's. There is the house and office to view. The staff are very knowledgeable and of course friendly. The guides really help to make the time period come alive with their knowledge of the period. The grounds are nice to walk around. The site is located next to the Lieutenant General's presidents which also has beautiful grounds as well as gardens.

We have made this a family tradition, to visit this house and experience Christmas the way it was back then. This year, however, wasn't as entertaining as the years prior, and there was less acting. The kitchen scene was by far the best they had to offer, and was very enjoyable.

Nice visit. We were lucky to be alone in the house with the guide, so we had a really interesting tour. We were also able to taste ginger beer made by one of the guides. The house is very well preserved and well maintained. Since the cost of entry is included in the Newman Vaults entry, this was like a free visit for us. If you have time it is worth taking a tour.... I also included a picture of the ginger beer recipe for those interested... it was really good!!

(Translated) There is a lot of text only in English in the first building. The second contains a lot of artifacts that expose the era of the building in use. It is even possible to lend yourself to the game by costumes. With the purchase of a ticket ($ 6) you also have access to the Newman wines house.

Fantastic historical site. Always has a few activities for kids. At Christmas time, it has special activities for families and often has a formal dinner fundraiser for the adults.
