REVIEWS OF Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal IN La Salle

So fortunate enough to experience this place during my visit in Montreal. The interiors were magnificent, unlike anything I have seen in my life. This was heaven on earth. For anyone reading my review, visit the place right after sunset (6/7pm) and you can see the sky's turn grey and city lights glow and I promise it would be a breathtaking experience :) God is Great ????

Faye Cole

Beautiful place to watch the sunset and hike around in Mont Royal area. Quiet and peaceful inside.

Eva De Castro

We visit Saint Joseph Oratory every year in the summer. This church serves both English and French masses. Be prepared to climb up the stairs to get to the Crypt church. They are currently renovating the surroundings of the oratory to build benches and some kind of resting/ picnic areas. It's going to be more beautiful.

Eric Thomas

Not too worth it at the moment. Construction is really ugly and the inside is not very pompous.

Lida Mesgin

Church, museum, shopping souvenir, great view of Montreal in one place. I love this church.

Teacher David de la Peña

A really beautiful place with a nice view. It is a nice place to visit. The view of the city is great and you can go up and up and up and you will discover many beautiful places. The architecture and the view merge in an incredible trip.

Adrian Paris

There is a lot of construction happening. Be sure to use the free shuttle service!

I. Kamala

Beautiful, very interesting how they build it. Really recommended to visit st.Joseph oratory if you are in Montreal, it’s a must see.

Man Singh

Beautiful Church in Montréal I think it’s the biggest church in North America a beautiful holy place I really loved it

Tatiana Panfilova

We visit Saint Joseph’s Oratory every time we go to Montreal from Toronto. We really love it there and we go to light candles in memory of our loved ones that passed away. But this time we had a totally different experience. We tried to enter the Basilica on August 1st, 2021 approximately 20 minutes prior to the Sunday Masses. A very rude lady at the Basilica entrance not only didn’t let us come inside but refused to explain why. All her answers to all of our questions were “no”, but we could tell she understands English fine. She didn’t bother to explain anything to us. We not only didn’t get a chance to go inside but also felt so very unwelcome by Oratory’s staff. The worst experience ever!

Cynthia De Sua

Beautiful oratory, haven't been in a few years. They are working on some renovations, can't wait to see it when it's done.

Jose Herrera

This is an iconic place in the city. The architecture, the view and the religious meaning make for a very special combination. I recommend in particular to visit the candles hall on the lower level.

Abhirup Chatterjee

Beautiful place, Beautiful church inside and the city view is spectacular.

Shudipto Amin

It's one of the largest basilicas I've seen. It is worth seeing, even more so than the Basilica of Notredame in the downtown area. Make sure to explore the outer gardens as well, including the small original church. Entrance is free, but the gardens are closed in winter, so summer is the best time to visit if you want to see everything in one trip.

Nandan Vaidya

There was a line-up for the entry on the Christmas eve. Nice peaceful place with a great view of the city.

Nick Tissera

The parking area is under construction and due to Covid-19 only one entrance to the Oratory - from top most parking lot on mountain top.

Alizée Lambert

Amazing church, a must see when in Montreal. The view from the terrasse is great. There is also a very nice gift shop with a lot of books located just below.

Lehanemar

Visiting one of the miraculous church in Montreal.. St Joseph oratory .. My heart beaming with joy and My prayer is granted Thanks ... Glory to GOD ????❣️❗️

Farwa Zaidi

Beautiful architecture and ripe with spiritual experience, a must stop for anyone visiting Montréal.

Antonio Neves

Very beautiful place. The church is bigger than I thought, really huge. Inside you can see some music and celebrations Depending when you go. From the observatory outsite you can see a big portion of the city.

Tyler Barberian

Whether or not you;re religious the Oratory is something you have to see. The stained glass in the church is unbelivable, the exhibit on Saint Andres is extremely interesting, YOU CAN SEE HIS HEART AND TOMB!!!! Additionally there are great views of part of the city,

Mahin Ahmed

Very high place, specially now when there is some construction works are going on..so u need to climb the stairs. But all fades away when u reach to the top for the spectacular view and architectural design of the church inside and ourside..must visit in montreal!!

Michelle (mytgurl)

I have been going to the Oratory since I was a little girl from Ottawa. I am not religious at all but visiting and seeing this beautiful work of art and …

Gaurav Nagar

Beautiful majestic oratory. Its so calm and peaceful, the organ is a site to behold - one can imagine the soul stirring music it generates. A must see in Montreal.

Christine Dang

This Oratory is the biggest church in Canada. And boy was it massive. So big they had their own museum and escalators on every floor. A wall full of canes- it was said who ever walked in with it, for blessed and walked out not needing it. There’s a heart of Brother André along side with his tomb... if you are visiting Montreal, you need to check this historic place out.

Ryker

Super cool! I was there on vacation and I didn’t know what to expect but it was ginormous! So many different rooms and it was super fun to explore. Great assistance from staff and most things were translated into English as well as being in French. It’s all self guided with an exception of a paid exhibit. I loved it!

Vanessa Kennedy

The outside of the church is quite impressive but the inside wasn't as grand as I thought it would be. It was a cool place to see and the history is quite interesting but I wouldn't go again.

Raulson Sequeira

This is located on a hill. The speciality of this place is that they have preserved the heart of St Joseph. Also all those lame people who visited here and got healed have left their crutches behind as a proof of their miracle of healing.

Madhusudanan Raghavan

A nice historical place to visit. Takes about 2 hrs in total with moving tourist volumes

Travel and Life

This is usually our must stop every time we visit Montreal. The architecture and views are phenomenal. We were there end of July 2021 and the church is under major renovation which is mostly outside. So the parking is split to two sides and you have to walk around to get to the last set of stairs as the first set of stairs are demolished and under renovation. Once the renovation is completed there will be a welcome centre at street level along with escalators and elevators. The main upgrade will be an observation point in the dome which will be one of the highest observation points in Montreal. The main entrance to church is also closed at the moment and you have to enter from the 5th level near the parking lot. You pretty much have to figure your way around from that entrance. We did find this a bit tricky but there were security guards around to help everyone out. Aside from this everything else was open as usual.

Danny Elisha

Great place to visit and learn more about the Christian faith. It's a lot of walking if you don't drive up, so be prepared!

Nicholas Petrillo

Impressive facility. The steps up are a prayerful experience (would recommend going up on your knees). The lower crypt church is beautiful with incredible stained glass windows. There are hundreds of candles burning before the many titles and patronages of St. Joseph, as well has the simple resting place of St. Andre. The upper church is quite different, but impressive in its size. It has a different feel, much darker and somber. The grounds are beautiful as well. My wife and I walked and prayed the Stations. Ample parking, but may be a hike. Be ware of buses too.

Shlomo Levi

I loved this place and the history behind it. What worries me is how good acts by humans being is turned into sainthood by the catholic church. The process of collecting evidence to support some miracles during the life time of the said …

Kanav Sahi

The church was itself a beauty and the positive vibes were amazing. The place was very clean and many places were installed with sanitizers. The only think i didn't like was the donation machines the number of machines were to much it started to feel like an obligation that we have to donate.

Amir M

If you are a tourist it is a MUST see in Montreal. If you like calm and spritual places, this place will definitely satisfy your sprit with whatever religion or idealogy you have.

Rui (areyoueye)

Beautiful architecture and grounds. The escalators inside made climbing up the tall building easy. It also offers a great view of northern Montreal.

Intan Goyana

I haven't seen that much of church, however, this one strikes me the best. It has cubism and minimalist approach to its architecture. Brighter and lighter feel inside the church. To save your energy, park your car at the top, enter and exit on the plateau where you can have a breathtaking view of Mont Royal.

Sound Wave

If you get the chance to go for a walk after a snowfall the scenery is like a majestic Winter Wonderland, when the lights come on at night and there's fresh powder on the ground a stroll around the oratory is literally breathtaking. Make sure to bring a pair of warm boots, mittens and a toque for the walk.

Neil D'Penha

A very Beautiful piece of Architecture. A lot of lovely work in the interior as well as exterior. Highly recommend walking up the steps from the exterior of the church to go to different levels and don't forget to take a moment and take a look at the view from the topmost level. Reminds me of the view in Athens. Take time to view the gardens towards the back of the Oratory. Absolutely worth the visit when you're in the city.

Antoine Parant

Stunning place and the second biggest dome of the world, just after St Pierre (St Peter) in Rome. The cross track is a must-do too. Beautiful gardens and a good place to chill!

Your Helpful Wendy

This place is Gorgeous and definitely a must !!! My sister drove all the way to the top of this mountain where this basilica is located. Such an impecable and peaceful place. We loved it and felt amazing, plus the architecture is so pretty. There’s no entrance fee and there are different floors. We didn’t have time to go to the museum but there’s one there too. At their gift shop you can find any type of great keepsakes and Catholic things like books, bibles, accessories, frames, and much more. The service here was perfect and the parking was free.

Pedro Goncalves

I've been a lot of churches in my life and I'm sorry to say that there was nothing special about this one expect for it's size. When you enter, you don't feel like you are entering Holy ground. It's just felt like a massive open space and mainly impressive for that reason. There were certain parts that were really nice and beautiful. My apologies but this my humble opinion.

Vikram Karandikar

Best place to visit in Montreal. Beautiful landscape and complete city view of Montreal from the top. Lot of stairs to climb but worth. Awesome architecture. Easily accessible using public transport.

Alejandro Frias

This place is amazing. It's really huge so explore complete will take some time but it's worth it.

Yiu Sun Eugene Wong

This place is currently under renovation so parking has been heavily cut. Not the actual oratory though, just the parking area. There's so much to see and learn there. Very open area and could see alot of the downtown area. Don't expect to see high rises though, I believe there is a law that prohibits buildings being taller than the cross at the top of the mountain.

Balu Baby

So majestic. The Basilica was closed to visitors when I went so I couldn't explore to its full extent. But the view from Terrace, the crypt church etc was a nice experience. Too bad I couldn't see the Basilica.

Karl Gruenewald

One of the highlight's of our trip to Montréal, the Oratory has several spaces well worth visiting on their own. By far our favourite however was a small grotto hidden behind the Votive Chapel, a beautifully serene space between the building and the rocky side of Mount Royal that had been carved out to accommodate the oratory. Trickling water ran across the face of the rock, splashing onto our heads every so often as we walked by, with a peaceful-looking Virgin Mary tucked in the corner to complete the scene.

Nayan Rajgor

Nice place to visit for all. They just keep allowing cars even though the park space is full. Could be monitored a little bit better. Parking is 5$ donation (all day).

Pablo Novas Perez

San Jose Oratory is the place that Christians have to visit when we go to Montreal. beautiful located at a height that gives us a beautiful view of part of the city. Some very Christian believers climb the stairs or walk down the aisle on their knees as a form of peregrination.

Giulio Carena

There's an elevator inside but I'd 100000% recommend to take the stairs outside and enjoy the view !

Steffi Ernest

Very beautiful place! A must visit for tourists!

Trudy Stewart

This Church left me speechless what can I say. It's definitely a must see and don't forget to donate once there so others can enjoy. The beauty I will not say as this is one that you have to see for yourself. Enjoy wow

Sreeja

This basilica has my heart!! Brace for a long review because I want to share my experience! Also, went during covid and on a Sunday so some things may be different depending on when you visit. So, right when you enter there is a parking lot which is free parking on Sundays. You can park there and take a shuttle bus up to the top right to the entrance of the top level of the basilica. Or, you can walk up, going up the stairs enjoying the view! We attended the mass at 11:30 AM on Sunday, because of covid there is only one entrance to the basilica for the mass. If you don’t want to attend the mass, you can enter through another entrance which had a huge line as they are only allowing a couple of people at a time. Once inside, you can access the gift shop, level 3 has the exhibits of St. Brother Andre, level 1 has the votive chapel with all the candles, the tomb of brother Andre and the crypt church! From the outside, there is like a terrace from which people can access the Garden of the stations of the cross. It’s also the perfect spot to watch the sunset! The views are just incredible. Also, must visit the little chapel beside the basilica, very beautiful. You can also drive up in your own car, they have a few parking spots at each level. Overall, I loved this place, the beauty of it all is that it attracts people of all religions and backgrounds - the power of St. Joseph! Definitely will be back.

vipin V

One of the best architecture wonder in Montreal! St. Joseph’s Oratory attracts not only Christians but people from all walks of life and religion because of its Status. First of all it is situated on the top of a hill which could be noticed from far away. Secondly, the strucutre itself attracts many. There are 6 floors are divided so efficiently that each floor has its own story and beauty to tell. There is renovation happening outside and parking areas nowadays and once it is completed this oratory will turn into a mych more beautiful attraction. There is a $5 parking daily fee is to be paid for vehicle parking and shuttle buses will take you to the oratory on the top of the hill and drop you back once you complete your visit. St. Andre’s tomb is preserved here and masses are conducted at regular periods. If you are visiting Montreal or Ottawa or nearby place, I would recommend this would be one of your must visit place..

Sameh Mamdouh

Perfect place to watch the whole city of Montreal and the moment of sunset is fabulously amazing from up there. Plus the building it self from inside gives you warm and welcoming feeling.

Loulou's Picture

Nice place to visit, great view over the city. It's free. But the church itself is simply ugly. It's too big and has no charm.

Raúl

It is a huge church, beautiful, you have to walk to the left side to see the garden with the statues and the fountain of redemption, then also to its right side to see the Chapel of Brother Andre, then inside on sundays, there is a musical/show, free entrance at 15:30pm, a good experience, it is also an awesome place to work out, running up and down all the many stairs. Beautiful view of the city. Recommended.

Alexander Yu

If you visit Montreal you have to come to this church. It's beautiful. Please pray. Please donate. Please reflect on your life and the meaning... It's more than experiences. Meditate here. And read the stories of great men of God who helped make this place become what it is.

Jason M

Very nice to visit. Hopefully the main parking isn’t full otherwise you’ll be making the walk up the hill! Note that the 6th floor (observatory) is closed on Sundays for mass (we didn’t know that). Check out the gardens and definitely the view from the lookout!

Carlos Reynoso

Amazing, whether you're religious or not, a place to see while in Montreal. Wear comfortable shoes. Pictures don't paint the real pictures. Amazing view from the top... Don't forget to see the gardens. Enjoy.

Elí MuGu

Beautiful and Modern Church, is too huge. Have electric stairs and interesting arquitecture. The history of the Oratory is very interesting, inside the church you can know a small museum.

AADSTTT

Today I went for the first time to this place, behind all the perfection of the architecture, I found something really interesting, a lesson that I will remember as a Catholic. I was walking inside the chapel with my wife with all the necessary respect, but a priest kick us out, telling us, if we are not going to attend the mass we need to leave, the mass was going to start in the next 45 minutes, meanwhile others where walking inside with no problem, why he kick us out? how he suddenly feel that he has the power to tell me that we are not invite to the house of God, there is a big lesson to learn here, because after that,, all the magnificence of the church just collapse front in of my eyes, then I think again and I ask to our creator to give me the knowledge to understand the situation. I think God is not just there, the devil live here as well and he is always finding a way to attack us, I know that priest is thinking about it, and for me is fine, I forgive him, because only God our biggest and only creator is the one who know what we have inside our hearts, I can get kick out from all the church in this planet but I would never kick God out of my heart. I leave this place as soon as he told me, my believe is not built in gold or in some expensive building. I went inside the chapel with my wife in the right side and I leave with my wife and with God in my left side.

Hind Aboussadiq

A beautiful place to visit ! You can use the guided visit for more insights and infos. And the views from there are gorgeous.

fozia mahboub

It was an amazing experience... Very big and have a very great history..

Alejandro Pelaez

This is a beautiful place. For me, it also represented a spiritual experience. Good choice if you have a couple of free hours in your visit to Montreal.

Obed Matul

This place is HUGE!!!! We even got lost in it. It has 6 floors (more that are not accessible). It has a library, cafe, souvenir shop, museum and so much more. We were able to go outside to the balcony and have an amazing view of the area. It’s a MUST VISIT in Montreal

Sandra

It is such a beautiful church. I loved the architecture. They have 6 levels but some levels are not accessible. They also have a panoramic view of the city from the 3rd level. Currently they have some construction going on and getting a …

Antti Koskela

It's a fairly impressive building from the outside, but rather underwhelming from the inside. It's not very big, and not very accessible. I did like the feeling and decoration in the candle room (it probably has a better name, but for the life of me can't come up with it right now!) I'm sure it carries some significance to pilgrims, and they sure made a big deal out of that - although I find it interesting that someone would make their pilgrimage to this out of all places. Overall, an interesting piece of local culture, Montréal's modern history, and impressive to look at from outside.

Richard Chong

Very nice place to visit in Montreal. You can hike at this beautiful place. The highest point in Montreal is here at the Cross. See the picture.

anish KI

Loved the church's interiors. Beautiful art museum and garden. Good view of the city from the top level.

Joel Davies

Incredible experience. The architecture is astounding and you cant beat the view the oratory offers, not to mention the park is very well kept and beautiful.

Naeim Roudehchi

I attended a super amazing music session on sunday and the church itself it is just a blessing to see and also the museum was yruely spectacular

Ed B

Great look outside, but no so much inside. Very commercialized place. Don't think it's a real church anymore

Eden

Whether you practice a religion or not yet this place is a must to explore. There's so much to learn how this church started (from Brother Andre to the community). They have such spectacular view of some part of Montreals. I highly suggest to get a map because anyone can get lost. Took us about 2 hours to explore every edges of this church. They also have cafeterias for public to eat and rest. There is a donation fees and parking fees.

T.N

Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal is a Roman Catholic minor basilica. It is Canada's largest church and has one of the largest domes in the world. The basilica is dedicated to Saint Joseph, to whom Brother André credited all his reported miracles. Pope John Paul II deemed the miracles to be authentic. The St. Joseph's Oratory cross represents the highest point in Montreal at 263 meters above sea level. You can find a museum contains Brother André's heart,a souvenir store ,an observatory place that has a magnificent panoramic view of the city A place to not miss in Montreal

Kev Mercader

Long story short, it’s one of the best places to visit when in Montreal; you can take the long way like us and walk all the way to the top from the front stairs (or ride/drive halfway)—there’s a gorgeous view at the top waiting for you when you reach there, the insides were impressive as well

Bruna Regis Razzolini

This place is a must see in Montreal. You get a great view of the city from a different angle that you get from The Mont Royal. It is easily accessible by metro and bus. You can walk there from the metro station, but it is a walk up the hill and if you are in a hurry the bus will drop you in front of the Oratory. There is a shuttle service available there to take you closer to the entrance (there are several flights of stairs to get to the top). This place is usually super busy, but it's not crowded as Mont Royal. There are several things to see inside the Oratory, and every Sunday afternoon a free concert happens at the main church (really nice! The sound of their organ is majestic!)

marina dsouza

It was a time consuming wait. The help and management of volunteers to help the visitors was remarkable. Good on the whole. Worth visiting.

Courtney Edwards

Bring a small snack and watch the sunset from the stairs. You will never forget it. Such a beautiful place.

Chris R

Actually never knew they had such a nice garden with statues. Was very impressed and nice place to visit in Montreal.

Marie Howe

It so beautiful and it so peaceful

David Woyke

Wish more of the facility was open, and it seems a little run-down, but it's free and the basilica is beautiful. Check out the little chapel in the parking lot, too. Couldn't understand why the bell recital could only be heard via speakers from the ugly parking lot (or at least that's what I was told).

ManLi Q

Love this place, especially the Garden of the Way of the Cross and the water fountain at the back!

Shamroze Khan

Amazing church which also has the highest point to see entire island of Montreal

Hau Yung Julia Suen

The church is really huge and impressive A nice place to visit for Catholic or non-Catholic tourists. The pipe organs are also beautiful and attractive.

Reeta Sharma

It's most beautiful and very large church in North America or in Canada. The view from top of the oratory is mesmerizing. I really love this place. You can see this oratory from anywhere from Montreal.

Krupal Patel

Beautiful peace of history, great views from all around and a spectacular view inside. Currently under going new construction to put a modern touch on a piece of hisory. Great place to sight see..

Dniro D

Amazing place to visit 10/10 recommend everyone checking out, Beautiful view Be aware currently there is construction being conducted as they are expanding the property. still open to the public

Liisa Shafer

Beautiful place to visit. Parking is only $5, but plan your visit early because the parking fills up fast. They also have a free shuttle that takes you up to the the entrance. Unless you walk or hike regularly take the shuttle because from the street level it is a long walk up to the Oratory with a very steep ascent. Make sure you plan at least 2 to 3 hours or more if you want to see everything, and take the map that us offered at several places to orient yourself as you can get turned around because the place is so large. We also walked the Stations of the Cross on a beautiful autumn day. The walk is up and behind the Oratory, and is spectacular along with the views of the city.

Julian Wong

This is a huge church. You have to be there to see it for yourself. The view from the steps of the exterior of the church is picturesque. Sadly, there were some constructions going on when we visited in Aug. The church is really big so you may get disoriented when you are wandering around. The design is not Gothic so there is no comparison to those old churches in Europe. This is a working church so be mindful of the the people who go there for prayers. There is also a garden which requires some climbing. Overall, definitely worth visiting just to be overwhelmed by the size and the view, be prepared to set aside an hour or two to explore it.

Nico Bock

Beautiful gardens and views from the balcony. Unfortunately the Oratory was closed on the day of my visit.

Kianoush Haratiannejadi

Good view in all seasons

pathik patel

No1 place in Montreal, what a experience this was . The substructure was amazing . Perspective of the sight is eyes pleasing . ???? ????????

Debra Marshall

A must see if visiting from out of town . Beautiful and historical. Lots to see and places purchase souvenirs.

Isuru Vidanalage

A Gorgeous church in Montreal. Lots of people visit here to watch the sun set. I couldn't take stay longer though. …

Tinka Stiller

I was there in 2017. I find the oratorio very, very interesting. I rediscovered the beauty and uniqueness. But unfortunately the garden was, this time, a construction site. You cannot go outside from the cathedral, you would have to go to the plateau from outside. For handicapped people and wheelchair users currently. not suitable.

Lindsey Ross

Interesting spot- Worth a visit if you have the time. It's by donation and relatively self guided. We wandered around and walked through the exhibits. …

John Medellin

I could stay forever, life is a journey of grace. The holy family had in st Joseph a king. St andre basset knew this all to well. My devotion to St Joseph has much fruit. Consider a true and total consecration.

Jonathan Adams

Great view of the west end of the city from the steps, and a breathtaking nave with the highest ceiling in the city.

Amreen Shafiuddin

the basilica is beautiful. super high elevation. lots of construction going on and closures too. super crowded during the weekend. historic and religious! super news of the garden. a walk uphill depending upon the parking you get.

A. R.

Beautiful architecture. Highly recommend you go for a visit, whether you are a local or a tourist. It's great. Even if you aren't religious, one can easily appreciate the designs and architecture and views. Well worth the experience.

Philopatear Salib

The place is huge and have lots and lots of details and history in it the only thing I didn't like was that there was no demonstration about the place and the history behind it and lots of the writings was only in French with very little ones which was translated into English

Sergiño

Nice place to visit. Their statue garden is something to see. This place got me thinking.

Debra Penne

It is a bit commercial, but the church architecture is inside is worth the price of admission, and to see the healing work of St. Joseph manifested on earth, is pretty special.

Roger D

The Oratory was closed , the parking guy didn’t inform us while we were going in . When inside the front ladies checking temperature and covid report didnt mention . So unprofessional of the staff . We walked around finding way and finally after wasting 40 mins we left .

Chirag Tanna

Definitely visit if you are in Montreal. You can see the city from right outside the church. There is enough parking available for most of the time

Bina

Currently there is a lot of construction happening in the are (which is quite normal for Montréal), however despite that the architecture is very beautiful and the area itself is quite peaceful. The view from the top is also exceptional, especially at night. It is definitely a place to add to your itinerary when visiting Montréal.

Patrick D

This basilica is just gorgeous! Situated at a higher elevation, the Saint Joseph’s Oratory stands out really well. The walk up can be a bit challenging for some but it’s manageable. Once your get up, the view was amazing. …

Yahya El Baba

Beautiful place, amazing architecture but with limited access during winter due to the pandemic.

Max Metz

Didn’t know what I was expecting but when we arrived we were blown away. Absolutely gorgeous. They hope to do renovations so the has an exhibit right when you entered the Crypt Chapel. It was super helpful to get to know this places unique story. Really a must see in Montreal too. Very cool!

Danny Otero

Loved this place! Came here on a Sunday and parking was free. The Oratory is up on a hill and although looks like a lot of stairs, it was easy to climb. My daughters loved it (they love buildings that look like castles). There was plenty parking and not that much people. We climbed up all the stairs and we could see almost all of Montreal! I highly recommend a visit here to really see Montreal!

Kevin Ha

Summary: Fascinating building and place of worship. Great view of the city. Uphill walking, lots of stairs. The exterior of the building is quite overwhelming in size and is astonishing how it was created. The interior takes it to a different level with the design of the Oratory. They follow somewhat of a minimalistic sense of design and it quite satisfying walking around and observing the interiors. There were many floors to the Oratory that had food, gift shops, washrooms, etc. There were multiple areas of opportunity to grab a great view of the surrounding city, as well as taking a beautiful picture of either the Oratory or the scenic background.

Julian Lima Kuleshov

While visiting Montreal was offered to go see one of the biggest churches located on top of a mountain in (Montreal )Quebec. I personally never went in due to there was no service on that day and there was construction happening on sight. One thing for sure I had quite the cardio workout going up the stairs ????

Chris Elliott

Quite a few stairs to hike but worth it for the view. The inside is more modern that what you may expect for grand basilicas, however it is impressive none the less. Admission is free and the tourist volume is fairly low.

Jessica Baba

A big Oratory in a big town. I've been coming here since I'm a child. Always relaxing to walk in here.

Poonamkaur Makan

Hidden gem...must visit to sooth out your mind and eyes..highly recommended..no tickets no entry fee..shuttle picks you up from entrance and drop off as well..no cost at all

Muhammad Mohiuddin

A very grand church, with a lot of amazing pieces of art reflecting religious history of Christianity. We visited on Saturday and it was free to visit. It has a very big souvenirs shop with a very good collection of bibles and other religious books.

Alison Berger

It was beautiful. Some people were going up the middle stairs on their knees and praying as they went. I have never done that and I was unsure of the reason, but it might be beneficial to research this if this interests you. I sure there is a beautiful drive behind this and maybe even a specific prayer that is encouraged. I loved going up the stairs, admiring the landscape, and then being greeted by the warmth of the church. It was welcoming and you felt invited to stay and spend time in reflection and prayer if you wished. The architecture and art was slightly different than I had experienced before I found it refreshing to experience this churches character and uniqueness. The church itself and the prayer chapel is free to go in, but they do ask for donations and there museum does cost, but I am unsure how much. I am happy we went.

Johann Ali

The scale of this complex is a testament to clean lines and streamlined interior architecture is humbling. The entire complex is worth visiting, with great views both inside and outside and lots of great history about Montréal and it’s foundings and growth. Plenty to see and learn for both believers and non-believers alike. The organ is massive. The crypt chapel has one of the most beautiful statues I’ve seen anywhere - a tasteful blend of old and new. When I was there, a xylophonist was playing and the warm sound filled the entire main chapel with beautiful music. There is the heart of the saint on display where the faithful can pray - his heart was a request from St. Frérè André as protection for the Oratory, and the tomb is visitable and requests for interceedences can be left - a very rare thing. definitely a must-do in my books.

jaclyn hsiung

We came here as a brief stop to have a city view + sunset. Parking was very easy where you can park on the ground or follow the signs and head up the hill a little if you don't want to walk the stairs up. Very easy stop to add in and access to via car.

Narine Harut

I visited in October, it was very pretty all around, fall colors, breathtaking Basilica, I had injured knee, but it wasn't hard and each level has elevators and escalators, I really enjoyed my time there, everything was beautiful, so peaceful but the same time powerful, very clean and well-maintained, great customer service, paid parking. Must see place in Montreal.

Patricia Polito

Beautiful and a must visit.. There are elevator and escalaters. This is free. Theres a cafe.

Ravvindra Babu TG

A must place to visit when you are in Montreal.

Nancy Benedicto

It's under construction right now .But it's still a nice visit .Very well organized .

Sarah Says Hello

I can see the cross from my window at night, and the top of the dome during the day. Not being from Montreal I decided to see what this thing was. What it was, is awesome. Every 'what should I do when I come to Montreal' site will tell you to come here. They are all right. The grounds are huge, there is so much too see inside, and out, and the small original church to the right side is really interesting. They have a shuttle that I believe (never been on it) takes you to the top of the hill. It is free. My only word of warning is that being on top of a hill makes it very windy. This is best seen in the summer. Yes, there is a lot to see inside. Still there is a beautiful walkway with statues nestled into the forest that closes during the winter. Find when it is open, and go check it out. You won't regret it. (It's called The Garden Way of the Cross)

Thuva Thurairajah

This church is a must when you visit Montreal. I have been going to this church since I was kid and I loved it. They are doing some work now and due to the pandemic it's a bit chaotic inside but still worth the visit.

Rhiann Cull

Lots and lots of stairs, but well worth the trek! A relatively short walk from Mount Royal Park, you could spend half a day seeing both sights. The church grounds are currently under renovation, so not the most picturesque upon approach. However, the church is gorgeous both inside and out.

Gisela Lara

Beautiful and impressive building. There is a free shuttle to get to the top part of the Oratory. Wonderful view of Montreal.

Rodyna Zabbit

Wow! Totally unexpected to find all that is this amazing location! From the history, to the mix of architecture, to the spectacular views... An Amazingly and Beautiful place to visit! Even with the current construction and or renovations going on below, it is still great to visit! We are definitely looking forward to returning and seeing it after completion of the lower grounds.

Stephen Parmar

One of the biggest church in Quebec, attraction for Catholics who have a devotion of Saint Brother Andre. It has 3 floor with separate Chapel. Exotic Gift shop on the third floor Devotion to Father Saint Joseph Never forget to get blessings from the real Heart of Saint Brother Andrew which is located on the Third Floor & First floor has tomb of Br.Andre . Beautiful view of Montreal city from the third floor exit.

roger vins

Amazing church. The church is soo huge and the view from there is really breath taking. The musical instrument inside is the biggest I have ever seen.

Kay Jay

It was such a beautiful experience. The view at the top is amazing. If you ever go to Montreal, it is a must see! Side note, there are lots of stairs!

Juan Avalos

A very imponent building, landmark of the city and symbol of the city's pride, strive and work. A very beautiful place itself with great views. You can also visit the original chapel as well as the founder's quarters. A must while in Montreal.

David Ross

A remarkable location. The views are phenomenal; both inside and out. The church itself is staggering in it's simplistic enormity. I was lucky enough to be present to hear it's magnificent organ. I would love to attend a concert here some day. Definitely worth checking out if you're in town for a couple of days.

Jaqueline Kerone

Wonderful church. On Sundays they have mass in English at 11 am in the crypt. The art gallery is also amazing. It's located 15 minutes by walking from the subway station. I went there on the middle of the winter and was beautiful anyway ❤️

Kamran Tavakoli

Beautiful church over 100 years old and unbelievable views

Mtl95

Very good place to visit in Montreal. Very accessible through public transportation and have a big parking for bus and car.

Yohan k

This is a historical place and a Catholic church where many tourists visit. It is better to have a mass when you arrive at the appointed time. It is a good place to pray, to sightsee, and for families to visit. Especially the parking is good and the city of Montréal is very beautiful from the view of the cathedral. Pleasant air and souvenirs can be purchased.

Sharmin Majumder

A beautiful church on top of mountain. Worth visiting. You could also get souvenirs from the church museum.

Sheromie Vittachi

My Mom loved being here. She was happy to go to mass. They had mass about 4 times a day. They have a credit card machine for the candles if you don’t have cash! Still have the crutches on display and there are 2 churches open. No entrance fee and they have an escalator ( and elevators) to got to the crypt. Also a big gift store.

Isabella Alarcon

St. Josephs Oratory is one of the most beautiful churches in Montreal. I go every week. The view is spectacular at the top and there is mass and confession all day long. We are blessed to have the Oratory❤ Praise be Jesus Christ???? There are a lot of stairs to climb to the entrance but its worth it!!!!!!!

Farhad Panahi

To see a beautiful Montreal sunset, you definitely need to head to the Oratory! Go a bit sooner so you can check out the beautiful interior.. then head outside and sit on the steps and enjoy the magic! Bring snacks and a blanket it can get chilly fast!

Loch Bucane

A must visit in Montreal! The structure is imposing and large. The site is also a photo opportunity because of amazing architecture. Services are in English and French.

PAVEL BAHDANAU

Beautiful view of the Montreal from the top. Parking $5. Drive up to the top.

SaBa Abd

Climbing the stairs is easier than it seems from bottom. On top you could have wide perspective of Montreal.

Praveen Roy

A must visit location in Montréal, There is renovation (mid 2019 till end of 2020) goin on inside and outside the church which takes away some charm

Philip nirchi

Just a fascinating house of worship! Several levels of history and a great gift store! And the most spectacular view of Montreal!

Salma Iqbal

Amazing place. Beautiful structure.. Though one has to walk a lot to go up. But it is all worth it.

Seven Stars

It has a beautiful view. You can see the whole downtown area from this place, a very good place for tourists.

Rommel Fernando

Hefty hike to the top but worth it The Oratory is near where I live on mountain so we frequent it often. It's location at the top of the mountain is stunning, and there is lots to do, especially if you're with family visiting Montreal. There is a small park along side the oratory with lots of places to sit with statues of the Stations of the Cross. It's a quiet place, very enjoyable. The Oratory itself can be reached by elevators and escalators which thread through the mountain, and there is a crypt inside where the remains of Brother Andre can be visited. You can see the water falling down inside the rocks, visit the candle room with thousands of candles which may be lit and donated to for prayers, as well as see the crutches mounted on the wall that people have left after being "healed" The Oratory's grounds are extensive, with acres of flowers, and well pruned and cultivated areas, any people can bring picnics or come for hikes on the summit, popular with many joggers as well, especially the stairs with the terrific view of the area if one is able to make it up to the front this way, just take your time, the view is well worth it. If visiting Montreal, make sure to use the internet to look up listing for masses, as well, the organ within the Oratory is world famous and if you're lucky enough to be there when it's being played, it's a absolutely memorable experience.

Angela Fok

Took the train and bus just to get here on a snowy and rainy day. Great panorama view and new renovated church (didn't wow me) I appreciate those Italy's historical churches much much more. I was speechless in Italy but here.... oh well lol Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal(French: Oratoire Saint-Joseph du Mont-Royal) is a Roman Catholic minor basilica and national shrine on Mount Royal's Westmount Summit in Montreal, Quebec. It is Canada's largest church and claims to have one of the largest domes in the world

Serena S

We are not religious, but coming here still feels quite cleansing. Beautiful grounds. Really nice in the summer when everything is open, but also nice in the winter. There is a little museum inside that is 4$ that is worth the visit.

Tarek Riman

Amazing Landmark in Montreal. Can be seen from pretty much everywhere in the city. If you are visiting it is a must see. If you are from Montreal, it is a great place to visit and feel the good energy and peace. If you are a photographer, it is a great place to take photos.

John Z

Under repairing or construction in front square at this moment (October 2, 2021). But you can drive to the back of the church and get in from there. The church is pretty big and has elevator inside.

mouna Pothamsetty

Very beautiful and peaceful place, shuffle buses are available every 5-10 min.

Andres Lopez

a place in montreal you must visit, no matter if you are a believer or not! It is the largest church in Canada and has one of the largest domes in the world. André Bessette passed away in 1937 and his grave is in the oratory. The oratory also has a reliquary containing parts of the heart of Saint André. !! an incredible place

Arina Ivnitskaya

Very fascinating place! Stayed there for 2 hours exploring outside and inside.

HUnewearl Sue

A magnificent historic building on the top of Mount Royal. I can't begin to cover the history, or the sheer wonder if this place in a simple review. Honestly, even if you are not religious, not Catholic, I can continue to list nots but meh. Where was I? Oh yeah, all those things aside, the views from this building, the history involved, and just the scale of the entire site is something to behold. Trust me, take the time, it's well worth it. My biggest regret is that I didn't take enough time on my last visit to take it all in.

soph videas

It’s a nice place, felt relax and peaceful, it has lots of stairs but that doesn’t matter because the view it’s beautiful

Aman deep

Superb place. Construction work going on in Sept 2021. I recommend to visit once in a life for sure. Also, it would be good if make plan of visit after Construction work has been done.

Spandan Basu

As you listen to the sound of French being spoken around you and explore Old Montreal, wandering down its narrow cobblestone streets—you might think you're in France. The historic area is filled with quaint shops and cafés; this Canadian city can be a chance to experience a bit of Europe in North America. The city also has a thriving food scene, with several popular farmers markets, including the Atwater Market and the Jean Talon Market. It's also known for its bagels, cooked hot and fresh by several iconic must-visit bakeries. Be sure to visit the beautiful Notre-Dame Basilica and take a drive up to Mount Royal, the big hill (or low mountain) the city is named after. You'll be rewarded with some amazing views extending all the way to the port.

Kristin MH

The oratory itself is beautiful, as is the gardens, and there is an amazing view of the city from the observation platform. In my opinion, there is a bit too much commerce happening here for a religious site. However it is a lovely place to visit if you avoid the gift shop.

Chester Diaz

A great oratory with St. Andre who was the healer saint of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This is a prayer community for those who suffer COVID-19 and other diseases that will be healed by God through the intercession of St. Andre.

Kiran Frenchi K

Biggest Church in Qúebec. Worth a visit. There is a museum attached to it and you can see many sculptures and stuffs. Spiritually very nice. Breathtaking view from the terrace. Highly recommended for a visit.

Alex Mitchell

Major upgrades happening. With that much pilgrims visiting some effort should be in place for protection from the elements. Once inside your reason for being there becomes clear

rahul tulsian

Very grand.. This place has a special vibe.. Must visit if you are in Montreal..

Gregory Swift

What an incredible place of worship! By far one of thee best, if not the best Cathedral I've ever been to. This staggering Cathedral is on par to St.Pauls in London. There is ample parking and there is many pews and areas in which to pray in peace too ????

Hyemzzi Life

It was a very valuable experience even if you are not a catholic as the scale of the building leaves you completely awestruck. The building is well equipped with escalators and elevators, so anyone can feel comfortable in it. I especially enjoyed the lighting of the candles with 2 dollar donation per small candles (6 per big candles).

Christopher Nguyen

Quite an impressive oratory with a massive Basilica that has high ceilings and is very wide and deep. We toured the entire place, admission is free, parking $5. Worth the trip!

Jit Das

A beautiful piece of 20th century architecture on the top of the highest hill in Montreal is already a place of huge attraction. The gigantic structure, with serene and beautiful halls inside make it a great attraction for anyone. An early morning visit will save you from the traffic.

Jun Yokoyama

I visited after dark. The church is very beautiful inside and outside as well as the view from there. The place is very quiet and you can appreciate the architecture

Vibhor Sharma

I went there on a Saturday evening. It was a nice place .Definitely one of the best spots in the city with a great view of city.Loved the exhibition and museum. One must surely visit this structure, the largest church in Canada.

Guillermo Castellanos

Is a great place to visit. Every time my family came, we go there. They really like the view from the belvedere and is worthy to look for those secret gardens

Deeyosha

???? Very beautiful and well preserved chuch.

polarcoffee

Absolutely stunning architecture which stands over 80 years. Walkable distance from Côte-Des-Neiges station

Jon Galliazzo

This is an amazing Montreal destination. The views are great, the pipe organ is unreal, and the mix of turn-of-the-century + revival + art deco architecture and design is quite compelling.

Yesmine Boukhili

It's a beautiful and impressive building. It's also one of the best places to watch the sunset. During the summer it can get very busy since there's a lot of tourists visiting. Don't forget to visit the gardens and the little greenhouse inside, a well-kept secret.

Mida Gouveia (Mida)

Grand and vast greenery, superb landscape and architecture. Theres is so much to this place it’s hard to put it into something short and sweet. I can tell you now unless you have legs or cardio of an athletes take your time on those stairs. It is definitely a trek on the ramp or stairs. There are elevators and escalators once inside. There’s quite a few gift shops indoors but I don’t remember anywhere selling food inside. In terms of transportation you can drive the car half way up the hill. It’s not too far by public transport either, just a block north from the station and you can’t miss it. There aren’t many staff roaming around besides the tours that I’m sure are informative and offered in French and English.

Bill Morin

Place was under construction outside when we went. But that didn't take away from the beauty of the place. The outside grounds were very well kept and pleasent to walk around. And I would suggest taking the tour to learn more on the history. A must see specially on a a day with nice weather.

Betty Angwenyi

If in Montreal, here is one place to visit that is uncomplicated to access, open even during the pandemic, and where you will not fail to find peace. As St. Bro. André is quoted as saying, "I have rarely come across anyone who has come to the Oratory and who has left without feeling better" and as someone who goes there frequently, I have experienced the truth of it. Come and pray to St. Joseph and his son, brother André (our big brother), then see for yourself if you don't come away feeling better.

Michael Rachid

This is an impressive landmark of the beautiful city of Montreal. It's a huge construction, very well maintained and as a big bonus it brings you a great view of the city. Take your time to truly appreciate the architecture, the beauty and all the love that was put in the making of this place. Definitely a must go.

Mike Kale

Beautiful church, the view is amazing and the architecture is amazing. Good place to go and see. Easy to get to from the blue line

Sims Widjaja

Nice historical church CRYPT CHURCH In French: 7:00, 8:30, 10:00, 11:30, 16:30, 19:30 (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) Mass for the Sick: Wednesday at 14:00 In English: 12:15 (Monday to Saturday) 19:30 (Tuesday and Thursday)

Reachill Franche

Amazing place for worship..????

Katherine Magnuson

Pictures don’t do it justice. This is one of he most magnificent places I’ve ever seen- it’s definitely worth the short drive from the city to spend a few hours here. St Joseph’s is so beautiful! The organ inside the church was the biggest I’ve ever seen!

Tianze Peng

The operation time is very generous, but if you visit during the day, there are souvenir store inside where you can learn more about the history of the mission. Good place for working out too if you live near CDG or Snowdon area.

Simply Emie Vlogs

I love to visit here every year since 2007 up to the present. The garden area and outdoor concrete stairs are still under construction. Still beautiful to visit. Need to wear mask inside.

supriya mor

It's wonderful. No parking fees and parking is at two levels. Easily with kids if get parking at higher level.

Donna B

Enormous church on the hill with the best City views. Defiantly worth a visit. Inside there are escalator so you don't have to climb all the stairs. No entrance fee and very few donation boxes throughout the building

B, C

Really beautiful place! I have been going there since my childhood. My favourite place in the whole church is the basilica. I don’t know why but there’s something that draws me close to it.

Mahsa A

Nice free walk through of a beautiful church. The view over Montreal was also beautiful.

Ian MacDonald

A stunning church, perched on the top of the hill. be prepared for lots of walking up stairs as there are plenty. The church itself is huge, and beutiful. despite being busy while I was there, the people inside were quiet and respectful which helps maintain a very potent atmosphere. If the building itself isn't your thing; the north-facing stair case provides an excellent vantage point to watch planes taking off or landing at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport.

Alex Barshevsky

Beautiful cathedral inside and out, detailed historical display, and amazing views of West Montréal! One of the best hills to watch the sunset from, very romantic place. I was disappointed that the Dome was closed for viewing, despite there clearly being stairs and elevator leading to the top!

KAISA AIERKEN

Super good experience, no matter of the religion it’s worth to check it out

Joy Z

A must-see in Montreal for sure, even after you visited European churches. It has its unique design, from outside to inside. Love its architecture and inner ornaments.

Cam Davie, CD

Beautiful building on the outside, the size is very impressive, and the views are incredible. However I was more impressed with the smaller chapel than the concrete main one. There are escalators inside and an elevator, unfortunately there was also a lot of construction going on.

O

Must view if you visit Montreal. Avoid the steps and drive up the side hill, parking is a tough find so arrive early. If you want a peaceful visit.

Gintautas R.

Amazing place, so much history, a must visit!

Hosam Azara

Beautiful and large church overseeing the city, once before COVID-19 used to be packed with visitors and faithfuls from different countries...a picture is worth a thousand words...at least renovations are ongoing during this period of distancing/lockdown...looking forward to the end of both

Sarb Dhaliwal

This place should be called PEACE .. if you want peace and love views you should go there once .. from roof was incredible experience of mine . I wish i could go every weekend.

Krishna Sudarshan

Not as stunning as the Notre-Dame Basilica but more imposing and plain. The proportions are gargantuan. Doesn't seem as welcoming either, sorry to say. But I make it a point to visit every time I'm in Montreal. Walking up the stairs is quite an exercise! I run into the locals often, there are many regulars from the area who visit this place.

Monique Frazier

Absolutely stunning. You could feel the positive energy while walking through the building and the grounds. The sunset was so amazing as well.

Michael Cheung

Beautiful sanctuary! Fun fact: Tallest building in Montreal.

Chetna Mohanty

Such a lovely place❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Best sunset view ever! Go climb it! I bet you won't regret it at all!

Amit S.

Awesome place for evening walk with family and friends.

Richard Cunningham

Well worth the visit. A really enormous space, with much more modern feel than some other big churches, particularly due to the art inside. The museum in the basilica also has a nice collection of nativity scenes. Be prepared for a long series of stairs and escalators, just due to the vast scale of the church.

Rad Dyner

There's something inexplicable about visiting St. Joseph's Shrine (Oratory) at 5:30AM or when nobody's around. I urge to take the plunge and kindly pay a visit. Much Love!

Maria Anton

Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Montreal is a place to visit for its beautiful garden, the inside is a peaceful place to pray or just look around. Front the top also has a great view of the town!

Paul Bridges

A very interesting basilica - not the typical gothic style, but a very art-deco style, almost ‘60-ish. Beautiful modern artwork unlike the other cathedrals we have visited. Lots of steps! About 200 I think.

Spider Man

Amazing oratory! There's a lot of beautiful chapels to see inside. If you don't have much time in Montreal, this is a place that you should try to visit! You will have an incredible view!

Hitesh Bhatt

May be the best place to visit after construction completion..

Tristan Guinto

Great church and architecture. The crypt and church was very accommodating. The ambiance was great but was only dampered with the amount of commercialization.

Matt

Beautiful. Breath taking. Holy. There aren't enough words to describe this place. It felt so good just to walk in this place. It's magnificent, with terrific views. Even the service downstairs on the first floor was spectacular.

Mike Lin

If you ever need a divine hand, if you ever feel low on energy, if you feel you can hardly get through your days, take a moment, and go pray. Whether you are a believer or not, it is important to know that you are not alone. Someone will be listen, you will be helped, if you are willing to receive the help.

Rochelle Alleyne

The view from the terrace was nice.

Kevin Wong

It is not the great building and structure of church that impressed me, but the story learned about all the good things done and treated by Brother Andre for those who were sick. We then see what his followers had done and kept for demonstration to memorise him for his kindness. PS: It has been controversial that if the story of Brother Andre is true or not, but it is not my intention to discuss this.

Wikum Karunaratne

This is a place with a lot of miracles and healing power . They say angels in human form walk around this place. Close your eyes, have faith and wish. Recall gods words "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you"

Adnan Ali

Claimed to be the biggest church in Canada (Prayers areas are small but they have multiple prayers areas). It's not like traditional Basilica. Structure of one of the prayers hall is contemporary (simple but beautiful). Entrance is free (they should charge some fees though). Have a couple of food places in there for quick bites. View from top is beautiful (It can be very breezy).

Kok Weng Leong

Nice place to visit. Free to visit, CAD5 for parking which is OK. But just don't buy the CAD2.00 visitor guide available at the entrance. I was expecting the book to be factual: explain about the history, architectures, layout, museums, facilities etc - yes they do explain about these stuff but sadly these are marred by heavy embellishment of tales of miracles & 'wondrous deeds' etc etc, & on page 9 it even recommends people to rub vegetable oil (taken from the chapel) on 'part of their body which was troubling them' which eventually 'elicited healings' (& yes this 'St Joseph Oil' is on sale in the souvenir shop!). This maybe applicable in older times where there're no effective treatment etc but in the 21st century this ill advice just doesn't make sense. Nothing against christianity but this guide book ought to be re-written to be factual, using more credible & believable materials, by more credible writers. It is not a religious text & should not be written as one!

JOJO

There’s a construction is going on currently, so it looks like a bit of mess! People are required wearing masks go into the building, make sure you bring your mask along with you before visit! We went to garden next to the church and took a walk! Nice weather and nice sculptures!

Mabin Antoney Pulikodan

Must visit place in Montreal , We all must see and explore such work , even ur a believer or not, we can see how beautiful church was made , and beautiful view from front side . We can enter church and we can buy religious products too. Wont regret visiting this church.

John Beaver

Stunning Architecture, beautiful look over Montreal, humbling in its vastness and beauty. This is a marvel that you should see when you are in Montreal whether religious or not. Definately worth the trip. From the crypt to the soaring hights of the dome this building has so many little books and places to see.

Ivan Carmann

This is a must place to see when visiting Montreal. The church is just amazing and the story behind it is something else. Plan enough time since it gets crowded and there are multiple levels.

Buki Omotosho

Brilliant architectural framework as is the specialty of the catholic church worldwide. St. Joseph's oratory is said to be the biggest in canada. Very clean, serene ambience prevails below its dome, inside the basilica and the vision of its founder(as well as his anatomical heart and tomb) dwells within it.

Lieven M

This is a review of my very first visit to The Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal in Montreal. The site is definitely breathtaking as one makes her/ his way up taking the stairs. The foregrounds might just disappoint a bit due to the ongoing construction, but as one marches on, she / he will start admiring the beauty of this treasure right here in the City. The architecture meets art! At the top of the stairs, bottom of the Oratory, the sight is just wonderful when overlooking the city. It’s definitely a must see location for families, lovers on a date, and photographers in search of new sights. I would recommend going early am on weekends to soak in its beauty and avoid crowds. There are few ways to get at the top, either by car, by free shuttle, or by taking the stairs ( worth the amount of energy spent and calories burned ). Depending on current Covid rules, the Oratory might be open to the public, or visiting the gift shop is also another great idea. L’un des trésors que nous offre la splendide ville de Montréal.

Aloysius Arulanandam

It's know for centuries, right now a major construction is in progress but paid parking is available and church is open for worship for mass advance booking is expected. Covid 19 protocol is strictly observed. I love this place.

Dipesh Nepal

Beautiful and beautifully located, visitors must climb more than 280 steps to get to the main entrance. There is escalator to get to the top. Very accessible via bus, 30-40 min walk from downtown Montreal. We walked from Guy Street, and it was fun.

Caton L

Pros: this place is free, it has an amazing outdoor observatory when the light hits just right. Don't be fooled by the church itself - the surrounding gardens and sculptures are the real highlight: A maze that leads up to the Fountain of Redemption Cons: as it is a more modern church, it is quite plain and cold on the inside, not nearly as intricate as Notre Dame Basilica, but no one is expecting it to be either. There is also a LOT of walking and a lot of shortcuts are closed off due to COVID (?) As you leave don't forget to visit the original church: a cute teal coloured building opposite of the parking lot. Quite the upgrade!

Jian C

Great place to catch the sunset. Really interesting, architecturally. The outside of the basilica is completely different from the interior, not what I expected at all. The interior looks quite modern and contemporary. Originally only came to view the sunset over Montreal, but arrived early so ended up exploring the inside of the Oratory, which was interesting. It’s really spacious inside, much larger than it looks. There’s also an original chapel, which is very small but quaint and worth a peek, it’s a short 2mins walk from the main basilica.

josh kim

Huuuugggeeee, free parking but remember to park at the top, if not wait for the shuttle. Lots of construction going on outside. Big tip! Wait for the sunset, you feel like you are on top of the world

David Webber

Amazing structure and beautiful setting, but beware the site is really geared towards religious pilgrims, not tourists. Also currently (Aug 21) the main Basilica is closed except for French or Spanish mass (no English).

Lux Erus

Lots of constructions outside, but there are indications to a shuttle that brings you nicely to the top (no idea when it starts and stops going though). Instructions to get to the terrace unclear as every door to get to it were locked and you have to ignore the signage of the building (you have to get out through the entrance and the you can walk to the terrace and enjoy the view). Giving 4 stars because it is free, the view is awesome, and the oratory looks great from the outside. Not particularly impressed by the inside, I feel like I've been in churches with more art and more details, but really not bad.

Sebastian Saint

Very strange church. The architecture inside is very foboding, and it is so strange to see a heart on display as a relic. Worth it to check it out though.

Tony Nguyen

The Saint Joseph's Oratory is presently in construction/renovation so not as pretty as usually. However the staff manage to keep the place available and functional to visitors and pilgrimages with extra parking attendants, expedient shuttle, Covid-19 safety checking staff, etc. Mass still available as usual and will be even more during holidays period. Most areas are open during construction. They are all clean and safe to visit and pray.

Kamlesh J

No visit to Montreal is complete without visiting Saint Joseph's Oratory. A National historic site of Canada.

Antonio Hall

Saint Joseph's oratory was wonderful. If you really want to spend some time there you could spend all day. There are like eight churches inside of one huge ballistica.

Vikram Shekhawat

View from the top is amazing. This should be THE highlight of montreal. Definitely a must see place for visitors.

Mennatullah Yaseen

It's a nice place, with challenging stairs. The view is interesting from down and up stairs. Specially if you go before sunset.

Georges Younes

If you are not the religious type, the Saint Joseph Oratory may not figure out on your must visit list. This location is worth visiting in any case because it gives you insight of the level of religious fervor in Montreal at the beginning of the 20th century. Building such an imposing church on one of the higher hills in Montreal would be a difficult thing to imagine less than a hundred years later. Time your visit to coincide with an organ concert played on the impressive and fantastic sounding organ of the church.

Samuel Zhao

How can you miss this beautiful and big church ! I love the pray room at the top, the visitors are nice, and the staff are nice! if you decide to come visit Montreal ! This is a MUST !!

Alan Steele

Amazing and very beautiful church!! One of the biggest attractions in Montreal. This is a great religious site and great views from all around.Worth a visit.

Leo Li

The parking lot is under construction, drive all the way up to the top, they have extra parking for free

Triz Vin

One of the beautiful places in Quebec for prayer and meditation! Highly recommended for visit. Awesome top mountain view!!

Ismail khuda bukhsh

Beautiful basilica. rich in history. If you are in Montréal, you can visit this place just for the scenic views from the huge balcony. You will not be disappointed

Georges Fakhoury

Great place to visit. Historic, religious and breathtaking views and relics are found at the monastery.

I lighted 2 big candles which cost $6.00 each which I paid by credit card (tap) but I was so disappointed. Staff was already removing candles that were still lighted. Those candles looked as if they were lighted like an hour ago. I didn't see any candles that's been halfway lighted or almost finished. It was a big turn off. A BIG BUSINESS, they should respect the people who lighted them and for their intensions. Please don't remove lighted candles. People pay for them.????

Beautiful church/landmark to visit whilst site-seeing in Montreal. There is construction in the Parking Lot and Google Maps can be slightly confusing. Make sure you enter the parking lot from ground level and turn right to drive up to the main entrance for the church. There is a souvenirs shop and a small restaurant in the church. Beautiful and peaceful nonetheless.

I always have a great time going there. It's huge and the view over the city is beautiful. I like going there when I want to be alone and contemplate on my life. I can't wait for the on-site renovation to be over so I can roam around freely, once again.

Lisa Carey

I am very glad that I went. I spent several hours visiting the entire St Joseph´s church, oratory, and everything you had to see there. It feels very peaceful and it gives you the feeling that your prayers are being heard. St Joseph´s Oratory indeed makes many miracles.

Art IL P

It is a must see! Very remarkable sight ????

Rajvir Somal

Best views in montreal. Take shuttle bus down before calling uber. Otherwise it cost more to call driver all the way up there

patricia dudar

A good climb to get there if you walk. But you awarded with lovely views of Montreal. Much to see at the cathedral the life of Saint Andre.

Ram Raja

Must view place regardless of religion. The size of this is just immense, pictures don't do justice. Also the view of MTL from this high of an elevation is just spectacular!!!

Maria Guijarro

What a beautiful and peaceful place. A most see if you go to Montreal. Amazing to learn how Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal was built.

Shivang Amin

Great place to visit in Montreal really big church but needs to manage parking as not much people have time to wait for long

Jeff Heskin

A beautiful and inspiring church with multiple spiritual areas to experience. Don’t miss out on the less obvious areas to explore. The climb looks daunting but well worth the effort.

It's a Montréal's landmark. They are constantly building at the main parking lot. In 5 years I live in this city, I have never seen that part of the complex completely clear from construction stuff (honestly weird). Now this part is completely blocked. You can access by car (to the top parking), on foot or by bus. They have a small bus (navette)free, to take the visitors up to the alternative access to the complex. Sunday's are full of people, but I was surprised to hear from the personnel that they still close part of the complex from 12h to 13h. ???? Still, such a beautiful place, and if you're Catholic visiting the city, a must do. Services in English in the Crypt (first floor) and French in the Basilica. Also a cute museum dedicated to the founder.

Located in the heart of the city Montreal, founded by Saint Brother André, this huge church is a Catholic shrine dedicated to Saint Joseph, father of Jesus, a place of expression of faith, prayer, healing and peace. There is elevator to lift visitors to the top floor, where a huge hall for mass centered by wooden sculpture display of Jesus dying, a solemn place people can sit, pray and reflect. A outdoor path climb up to the outside top of the building, where a reflection pool sits, along the way up, there are sculptures telling stories about Jesus. There is platform outside the church overlooking the city, beautiful view. A must see place in Montreal.

Fengatron

Great church for visitors, admission is free. Sits on top of a hill offering a good view of the neighbourhood. Currently undergoing construction around the lower level entrance are which do affect picture taking opportunities. There is also a small garden/park next to the church with some nice greenery, statues and a fountain.

KP

Amazing views from the top. The front entrance to the oratory is under construction so it's a bit shabby. Once it's done it's going to be spectacular. The dome is magnificent and visible from all corners of Montreal island. One of the finest architectural landmark.

We spent nearly three hours on site. Everyone was kind but, along with hundreds of other wanderers, we were unable to get access to anything but the stores and the coffee shop (the whole merchants of the temple experience). Every time we asked how to get to the basilica while inside the premises -as we faced fenced off escalators and stairs-, we were told to use the outside access and be at the door at a precise hour. We were always at the outside door at the exact time, at 1:30, then at 2:30. Both times the door indeed opened but only for the person on the other side to tell the 50+ people waiting that they couldn’t get in this way but had to go “inside”. Yet again, inside we were told to… we’ll go outside. We stayed around longer than most but eventually proceeded back to the shuttle having had the chance to visit… nothing but stores and saint André’s grave. Just to make sure, before boarding the shuttle we asked the kind lady by the entrance. As expected she was astonished I would ask her again… she told us the only way to get to the basilica was to go outside, “there is no access to the basilica if you go inside” she clarified. I explained that the people at the door outside had told us the only way was inside “82 seconds ago”. She recognizes she didn’t know why and apologized.

The exterior is very impressive- I found the interior to be disappointing somewhat sterile and bland. As is the case in most places in Montreal the signage left a lot to be desired. I'm not sure when the construction is due to be finished, from information online it looks like it'll be another 2-3 years . There were many areas that are inaccessible and I was disappointed to learn that the gardens are closed until next May.

Marc D

The interior fails to hold what the outside appears to promise. The grand majestic building draws you in but the inside of the Oratory has zero flair. It is way too modern, way too commercialized. Gift shops, escalators, elevators and Food concessions are an odd addition to a place of worship.

God loves you. Mircales are true. Jesus is always with you. God bless you too. Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal is Miraculous. I love and feels like home. Saint Frére André, priére pour nous. Saint Joseph, priére pour nous. God bless and stay safe.

Natalia Z

Absolutely stunning! It's definitely a place to see whether you are religious or not. The architecture is beautiful and the peace you'll feel as you walk through is indescribable. Remember to go in and see the crypt.

priya vaswani

Amazing architecture with beautiful glass windows. The church had ample seating and restrooms for the public. There is also a shuttle bus to take you to and from the parking lot.

Bree

No longer a holy place; it has turned into a museum and tourist attraction. This place was once holy and beautiful, now it feels unholy and anything but Catholic. Some of the people there, including priests are not even kind. Not all who work and serve there represent Christ.

Sneha Jondhale

Amazing vibe and beautiful place to visit. Full view of Montréal from the top could be seen. We visited at sunset and the view was splendid.

Danny Murphy

$75 million renovation budget and it seems everything is at a standstill. Remains an incredible place of worship. A Montreal landmark, but the City needs to focus on bringing the renovations to an end.

Parvez Fattah

Large church and beautiful architecture. Lookout from the balconies is a great place to view Montreal and spend some time. Place where 10,000 candles are burning. Free entrance and easy movement via escalators. Lift available.

Ted G.

I visited on a lightly snowy night and it was magnificent! The light fog and snow had a dramatic effect. I highly recommend coming here. It is quite beautiful and majestic.

Lee R

Superficial at best. Besides the physical buildings, its a scary place to be. They do not represent the God of love who is portrayed in the Bible.

Angelo Baleta

St. Brother Andre inspired a lot of people by doing God's work. Wonderful!

Kate Fernandes

Beautiful, modern yet old As a big St Joseph fan, I had to stop here. The church is quiet and big and calming. Love the feel. The terrace outside is breathtaking, would highly recommend a visit on a no foggy day. It's quite a climb, recommend taking the free shuttle bus at the beginning instead of walking to the top.

Arnav Gupta

One of the biggest Oratory in Canada. You won't admire it's grandeur unless you visit it. Quite a steep climb or a few steps to reach the top though, but you wouldn't regret the views once you reach there.

Pranali Desai

There is a shuttle bus running every 5-7 mins between the oratory and parking. If you choose to walk, it is an uphill walk that will take you about 20-25 mins depending on your pace. Vaccine passport and photo id required on entrance. You can see the crypt church it is beautiful and quite. Entry is free. You can also do a small donation and lit a candle. You can take a look at the city from the top of the terrace. Once you go to the terrace and exit the building, you cannot get back into the church so make sure to see the church beforehand or you will have to enter again from the main entrance.

Krupa Patel

St Joseph’s Oratory is beautiful. The views to the city are absolutely gorgeous. Admission is free, they have a cafe, and a shop for souvenirs. Can easily spend 2 hours here. Recommended!!

Wain O'Hare

A huge place than can take up your whole day. Lovely walking through the Stations of The Cross in the gardens. Wonderful music from the Carillon. Acessible throughout the whole place. Plenty of washrooms. Plenty of steps. Escalators and elevators for those who can't make it up the stairs.

Aruna Ephraim

Beautiful oratory The mass was peaceful Lot of construction going on but still a peaceful place to be.

Suchandra Mitra

A must visit if you are in Montreal. They have a free shuttle bus service to go all the way to the top and also for coming back. There is a food court inside the oratory. The view of the city from the deck is amazing.

winnifred cumberbatch

You can enter from queen Mary road, and take the shuttle bus up to the top. There is also an option for all day parking, not too expensive. Lots of construction going on but, it's all for us to have a greater experience in the future, so beautiful and peaceful.

Isaac Yang

Beautiful church with an epic sense of proportions and scale. Definitely worth visiting when in Montreal - ample (paid) parking and good for an hour visit or longer.

H B

Nice quiet place. Not as decorative as the Basilica Notre Dame. Was free! Bring cash for lighting candles. Has a small unremarkable cafe.

sonny dinh

The church is located at the top of the hill so the view is scenic. There is a garden outside that display the stations of the cross on a sloping and winding path. There is also a small chapel in walking distance of the church. The museum is located in the lower level of the church and charge a small fee to enter. The architecture is more of a modern style than the Basilica of Montreal. You can spend a good amount of time here to take in everything.

J.Z C

Beautiful & wonderful place to visit when in Montreal. So much to see & enjoy. Gardens are very tranquil & well cared for. Souvenirs are very reasonably priced here as well. No admission charge but a $2 donation at the entrance is recommended. Very moving experience in the chapel where the canes of all the people who climbed the stairs are located.

eric williams

Beautiful views! For all the fitness freaks, due to construction you cannot walk from Queen Mary up the middle, those steps are being replaced. Start from Frere Andre, walk up and around the construction, and find a dark, curved staircase. Or you walk beside the cars on Kingston Road , which takes you right to the parking lot & landing viewpoint, very steep & good workout

Jacinta Wong

Simply a church. $5 to enter. A number of escalators to travel. As sight seeing it’s good but won’t loose if you don’t go.

Jismon Kurians

Very nice church with a serene environment. Only thing is, it is now like tourist spot which defeats the purpose of a church being our Lord's house. The architecture is very soothing to the eyes.

Darshini Kachiwala

A must visit if you are in Montreal and plus it is free entry. You can typically spend about 3-4 hours here. The rocks on the bottom level are breathtaking. Everything is beautiful.

Josephine N

Beautiful church! The church has a lot of stairs and is on a hill, but they have an accessible environment, with elevators and assistance if needed with spaces reserved for holders of disabled parking stickers. Magnificent view from the top. Must see if you haven’t been up there already. There is a lot to see and do at the church; events are listed online. There’s a gift shop and a coffee shop. Mass is held daily and quite often on two different floors.
