Cool place to spend a day. Fun for the kids learning how things were done in the past

I find this museum pretty cool, and cute to walk through on a nice day. It’s well maintained, well laid out, and very organized. It doesn’t have the most exciting things in it and it’s a pretty quick walk through in my opinion, but it’s still nice.

Margaret Okuzumi

A delightful place that well exceeded my expectations based on some of the older reviews and we certainly felt like we got our money's worth for a highly engaging almost 2-hour visit. The super knowledgeable and enthusiastic interpreters told us so many interesting things and were able to answer our numerous questions. Even though we've been to a few similar kinds of houses in the past we learned so much from the interpreters that you wouldn't have guessed just from looking at the stuff, and sure beat having to read a bunch of explanatory notes for each object. Schneider Haus became part of the government-run parks system I believe about a year ago, and added a bunch of artifacts and opened new areas recently, so if you haven't been in a long while, highly recommend a visit.

My daughter and I loved it , it's small , but the size match the entry price , for both they charged less than 11.00$ The staff were really friendly and helpful, they took there time to answer all questions, they were knowledgeable. If you like to spend a 2 hours of learning and experience history in a fun way . This is the place . I tried their jam it was awesome , and the price was excellent.

If you are coming to KW area, then this is a must see place. Don't miss it. It takes you right back in time and provides very nice details of the old times and how they used to live. Every time someone comes to visit us we take them to this house and every single person loved the experience.

Melissa Miller RMT

We loved our visit here! Three children and an adult was well worth the $15! 'Joseph' our guide was very knowledgeable and kept the kids very engaged and set them to tasks they would have performed in 1850. My nice was still talking about it the next day.

We went during Canada Day so it was free for the whole family. They distributed a cake to celebrate Canada Day at 2pm. My children had fun sowing beanstalk seeds and young sunflowers. They also played traditional games, learn about making arts using colourful glass and also had hands on experience making pretzels!

This morning I stopped at the garden of the Haus because one of their volunteers happened to be hoeing away the bindweed. I got the most awesome lessons on what was grown back in the early days of the homestead and how that has changed over the years. I chuckled to learn what to grow to make my own alcohol: Jerusalem artichoke! Who knew!! In sum: It's the staff that make the difference. Thank you all!

Willa Pierce

Historical houses built in the early 1800s (the smaller shed near the entrance was built in the 1810s and the main building in the 1850s), which nicely preserved a household of early Mennonite immigration. The furnitures in the house were mostly original pieces, and the people living in the house were extremely friendly and knowledgable about everything related to the house -- I absolutely enjoyed talking to them. Highly recommended.

Alicia Pokluda

What a lovely way to gain insight into how some people used to live. I can quite imagine what daily life would have been like after spending time in both the Wash House and the larger home that housed the family later on. So glad somebody had the foresight to preserve this important part of the City of Kitchener's history.

I really enjoyed coming here, it was full of history and I learned a lot about the people who used to live here. I could see how people lived back in those days and I thought it was very interesting. I got to smell different types of tea and plants and learn about how the people here made medicine. I learned how the Schneider family moved here and where they originated from.

Loved talking to the staff and the house itself was very cool walking through. It was like walking into a home during the 1820's

Not as well maintained as it's told. Being historical monument, should be maintained well.

Visited Schneider for Family Day and it was so cheap for a family of 3 with a house tour, fun activities for the kids and the amazing bird interaction with Wild Ontario. So worth it!

The property is gorgeous and invites meandering exploration. We enjoyed very informative demonstrations of shnitzing (drying) apple segments and making cider, and a lecture about heritage apples. If culinary history interests you, here will interest you.

I took a small class of secondary students to the Schneider Haus for a field trip. The staff were welcoming and professional. The tour was fun and informative. I had fond memories of coming here when I was a student so I am glad I could bring another generation of students to experience this special place.

Anna Breen

The experience of people used to live gave a good feeling and I can imagine how people spent their days and made things. it is a good place to learn about the past

Rysia Andrade

Really informative way to see how people other than rich white Victorians (like most historic homes) were living in the 19th Century. There was all sorts of funny or surprising bits of history to learn both for avid history lovers or new learners. Staff were great. I had a wonderful conversation with a young interpreter about Mennonites and the Anishinaabe of the area.

Elizabeth Loforte

Staff was friendly and answered all our questions. We learned lot and had fun.

Cheryl Moscoe

Excellent tour by knowledgeable guides.

Very interesting. Friendly staff with great knowledge.

Ms. Melissa Balan

A wonderful step back in time with costumed interpreters. Check online to see their weekend themes. VERY reasonably priced for a fun family outing as well.

Amirali Shams

Went on a snowy afternoon. Our guide was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. We were shown around all the rooms and given a thorough history of the family and what their life was like. Quite an enjoyable time and we thank the staff for all the hard work. If there was one thing to nitpick, it would be the exhibition on hijab and religion. If the exhibit was limited to the lower floor it would be OK but relics were exhibited throughout the historic house and it was quite strange to see Islamic scarfs and other things in the otherwise wellkept historic Mennonite home.

This is my happy place. It's a step back in time, where you learn to appreciate how things were done almost two centuries ago.

I have been going here since I was little, now I'm bringing my own children and it's still lots of fun! Friendly staff and well:)

Alex Inquest

Disappointing. For what they have to show the price of admission should be much cheaper. There is much less to see than you might think after checking their web site. We were told that today is 'a special' day because the kitchen prepared some samples. Well, there were no samples and the Wash house was closed (there was supposed to be another 'special event' there) We have visited a lot of historic sites in Ontario. This is the least interesting.

Quite interesting! It took us 2 hours to cover the whole place, and we didn't have time to check out the garden. We did ask a lot of questions on the tour though. The extra modern 3D art section was very cool! They have a water cooler here to refill your bottles! Great idea! They have washrooms on site. Store: It is exceptional for a house of this size. They sell quilts, old fashioned toys, honey, soap, etc. I purchased homemade cooked strawberry jam made by a local Mennonite (an inspected processing facility). History: The tour is about a relatively well off Mennonite family that lived here with 9 kids in the 1800s. You see their life and even touch a hay filled mattress. You find out why they slept in a different position than we do today and so much more. Guides are fairly knowledgeable. Parking: saw none, but maybe if you take Queen Street there may be some. You can definitely park on David Street or at Victoria Park and walk up Iron Horse Trail (orange sign) after crossing David Street from Roland Street, and you will find Schneider Haus. Admission: If you have a Waterloo Regional Museum membership, then this place is free and you get 10% off of items in their store. Kids: I wouldn't recommend very young kids coming here (maybe if it was a special activity day though). Kids ages 7 and up happily enjoy their day though. My kids were a bit frustrated making the exfoliating soaps (7-12). It seemed harder to make than at first glance, but they were pleased with their work when they got home. My tween said the place was interesting. Nearby local activities for kids: Victoria Park has a splash pad (moderate size but not super exciting), a nice playground, and walking trails. *See my pics for more info.

We were pleased at the level of detail and knowledge of our guide. They are clearly following strict measures to ensure the safety of their guests. Staff were helpful and understanding and we really enjoyed the experience.

This is a fun place to visit if you are in the Kitchener/Waterloo area! The museum was full of interesting things to see and the house gave a great feeling for what it must have been like to live in the past, with the smells of fresh baking in the air. The people there were very friendly and knowledgeable. There were even some very cute newborn chicks on display in the spirit of Easter!

Another wonderful preserving of our past. It was most interesting to see the size of the bedrooms. There must have been more beds in them then than there are now. As well as the haus, I thought that the quilts on display were absolutely amazing. It is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. I did find it difficult to identify the herbs in the garden by the haus and also the vegetables across the street by the parking lot.
