Can't review based on what the museum is actually like as was closed, despite a post on website saying cafe is open all year, it does say in the opening hours below is Easter to October, which doesn't matches Google's hours which I had presumed correct.

I'm a coach driver and needed somewhere for my 38 passengers to spend some time. We arrived unannounced. The staff in the restaurant worked their socks off, but all 38 people were served and left happy. Some visited the museum and told me it was fascinating and worth the visit. A good insight into local life. I will definitely call again (in advance, with notice hahaha) next time I'm here

(Translated) Nice refreshment point, more than anything else. The guy you need is irresistible, they were all like that. Dear South Uist flag magnet, but could I do without it? Damn, no! (Original) Bel punto di ristoro , più che altro. Il ragazzo che serve é irresistibile, fossero tutti cosi. Caro il magnete della bandiera di South Uist, ma potevo darne a meno? Damn, no!

Been newly extended and refurbished, with an excellent wee cafe, and a museum with a wonderful selection of archives of local interest.

Klark Jackson

Very interesting as a quick read of the local history. Learned quite a bit about how the island came to be, while educating us on why there's not many farms in uist. Family friendly but I wouldn't recommend for children as there's not many activities. Could do with some seating as it's tiring after reading all of the information. Great for souvenirs for those tourists. £3 for 16 and over Free for under 16

(Translated) A nice museum located in south huist on the uses of the inhabitants of the Hebrides. More or less ancient artifacts and many rooms to learn about how people lived on these islands before modernity. There is a bar with cakes and other homemade products. (Original) Un bel museo sito a south huist sugli usi degli abitanti delle ebridi. Manufatti più o meno antichi e molte sale per conoscere come si viveva in queste isole prima della modernità. Went for lunch and had a very informative history lesson all about the inhabitants of St Kilda Island and how they were starving. Sir Thomas Lipton and a rake of other wealthy gents put together a flotilla of ships/ yachts / boats to bring relief to the inhabitants. Well worth the 50p admission fee.

(Translated) Definitely worth a visit! The entrance fee of 3 pounds is justified! Here you can see some of the island's own hand-made things and show life from the past. A nice souvenir shop helps the locals to additional merit!

This is a fascinating place to visit. Had only a limited time set aside for museum but found so many interesting corners, rooms and drawers to explore that l stayed far longer. The time passed so quickly l hardly noticed and l left feeling there was still so much left to see. Highly recommended but l shared other visitors reservations about the scones. Opening times can vary depending on who is available to let you in but you"re on Isles time so that doesn't matter so much. A wonderful experience that gives a unique insight into Hebridean life but it also managed to remind me of much of my childhood in mainland Fife. L

This is a fascinating outpost of local social history and storytelling, and narrates wonderful stories and creates a very realistic picture of how life was and remained for many years during the last few centuries. It brought to life the very harsh realities of living and, indeed, surviving and making a living in this extraordinarily tough and barren landscape. Well displayed timelines and family trees, coupled with audio visual displays, including film interviews with local residents dating back to the mid and early 20th century, all combine to illustrate how it has been to live on this island. Authentic examples of local crafts and clothing all add to the experience. There is the inevitable shop and very good cafe attached (and WCs). Well worth the £3 per person admission fee.
