Loved seeing Maud Lewis' ACTUAL house!

Awesome to see Maud Lewis house restored, interesting exhibits, but in my opinion lacking in quantity of artwork compared to other galleries I have been too, but nonetheless, their giftshop is worth a peak, free to visit on Thursday afternoons. Watch the Maud Lewis movie before you visit.

My wife loved the folk art and the Maud Lewis section. Personally I preferred the group of 7 paintings especially those by Lismer. Neither one of us care for contemporary art so the Light section was lost on us.

I would like them to provide more information about what is in exposition. But it was a good place to visit.

The Maude Adams is worth the price of admissions, but the gallery offers so much more!

Had a wonderful time

It is good but not that much interesting. I liked the Mude gallery and the old paintings. It wont take more than one hour of your time. The art store inside is a little bit expensive, i knew some prices from other parts of city.

Amazing Maud Lewis exhibit

Had a wonderful time exploring. Visit early to avoid the crowds.

Fabulous display of great Canadian art and more! Loved viewing the largest showing of Group of 7 I've seen in one place...not to mention the fabulous works of Maude Lewis. Amazing.

Amazing art exhibits and great permanent collection. Go here is life is grinding your gears! There is one night a week (Currently Thursday) where entry is free. You cannot take your heavy items and backpacks around, so they provide free lockers. There's a connection tunnel between buildings, so you can stay warm while exploring.

(Translated) Many of Maud Lewis' works in the movie "My Love" and the house are on display ... It was very nice to be able to see all the cute pictures of Mod Lewis. (Original) 영화 "내사랑"의 Maud Lewis의 다수의 작품들과 그 집이 전시 되어 있음... 모드 루이스의 귀여운 그림들을 실컷 볼수 있어서 매우 좋았음.

Loved the Maud Lewis exhibit!

Beautiful gallery and wonderful and helpful staff.

Always enjoy a visit here!

Very nice art gallery. Two buildings and 6 different floors in total. Thursday after 5 pm is free.

Great collection!

A must see destination for the art lover in everyone.... Maude Lewis gallery is special.

Loved Folk art and Funk show and also the Black Canadian Perspectives show

This is a must for Maud Lewis fans.

I occasionally bring my kids to activities here put on by local artists. Its free and they learn about how to produce different types of art.

What a wonderful set of exhibits

Confusing use of space. Poor quality hanging

Go see the obvious paintings of Maud Lewis as mentioned in other reviews. Then watch the movie "Maudie". My favorite works were the folk art. Make sure you also see the collection of Modern Art in the lower level.

Very nice I really like that it shows art from local artists. It's not just any art gallery, it's the art gallery of Nova Scotia.

Good experience! Good art works.

Great place to visit on Thursday night is free between 5pm and 9pm fot now

We had an excellent time at an "Art Party" hosted at the art gallery. The art was diverse and beautiful and the service was excellent. It is also pretty wheelchair accessible with only a few slightly steep ramps.

What provincial or federal Art Gallery is not worth attending? Thay all are! Locally I attended the Gallery during the annually NOCTURE event in Halifax on Sat October 19, 2019. The highlight of this visit was "Miss Chief's Wet Dream" by KENT MONKMAN a very powerful piece.

Very interesting. A very extensive collection of local folk art on two floors along with many first Nations pieces. A few contemporary exhibits and many art rooms where you can create your own piece of art! A family friendly atmosphere. Worth the visit!

Feel like they have a lot of space and they could really add much more for exhibits. my 6 year old really took a liking to the lady at the front counter who was super friendly and great with him. We went specifically to see the Maud Lewis exhibit but took in everything. Was a great experience to share with my son.

Probably the best collection of Nova Scotia folk art in the world.

Very clean and welcoming

Came just to see Maud Lewis... which was wonderful. Sadly had a worker there harrass us for part of the museum and decided to leave.

Awesome ????, Maude Lewis exhibition was our favorite!!!!!!!!!

Awesome gallery of Maud Lewis art. Worth the visit.

(Translated) Museum very interesting by its choices. (Original) Musée très intéressant par ses choix.

Boasts one of the largest collections of Maud Lewis' work, including her painted house which has been installed on site, with a gallery dedicated to her works alone. Also houses a large number of indigenous artwork, thanks to their support of the same. Does not have the greatest collection of international art, but the Canadian collections more than make up for it.

A beautiful exhibit of Maude Lewis work.

We spent a couple of hours exploring this gallery and met super helpful volunteers who answered questions and helped us dive deeper into the art. Must see is the Maud Lewis collection and the East-coast folk art. It also features a very thought-provoking collection of modern art from a variety of different cultural perspectives.

It's not the largest collection but it is a must visit in Halifax

This was the second time I have visited the gallery. I took my daughter to see the Maud Lewis exhibit. Very nicely done

Very helpful staff. Confusing to navigate, but just take your time and wander.

Meaninful place showing local, national and international artists! I loved Maud Lewis exposition.

One of the exhibits weren't open yet but they warned us of that when we paid. Their exhibit on Maud Lewis was incredibly extensive and was really well put together. The Inuit art exhibit was massive as well and really gave a good overview on Labrador and their native people's traditional craft. They have a handful of traditional classic works and their permenant collection is well curated and varied. Great value for 12 dollars a person.

Boring

Beautiful place to visit!

So thrilling to see the Maud house. The Monkman was a pleasant surprise!

Great gallery, if you go and see the Maude Lewis exhibit read all the plaques and you'll likely cry.

It's a cute art gallery to check out if you have some free time. The highlight for me was the folk art and Maude Lewis house. They also have a nice gift shop.

Nice, but really if you go once, that is enough.

The coffee is perfect too.

Great!

If for no other reason you need to visit to experience the exhibit of folk artist Maud Lewis. You will become an instant fan.

Really enjoyed the exhibits here.

Lots of local talent....I'm glad we went.

Would of liked to art work not just pictures.maybe next visit.

I love the se gallery definitely recommend to stop by and enjoy local Nova Scotian art

Well worth a visit for the Maud Lewis house and paintings and the collection of indigenous art

Wow, the Maud Lewis cabin is there as well as many of Maud's amazing paintings. There was a great tour and an activity room to create some art.

I have attended several of the "Cultural Art Nights". Absolutely a wonderful way to spend an evening! Local Artists sharing their knowlege & skills while teaching a variety of workshops.

Was a pleasant way to spend a few hours.

Expected better of the Nova Scotian flag ship art museum. Too folksy, fine to illustrate some local contemporary culture but wall to wall in two buildings, leaves something to be desired.

Amazing staff, stunning works

I had a wonderful experience here. The staff are very friendly and informative. I thoroughly enjoyed the Maud Lewis exhibit.

Really enjoyed the Sunday afternoon family art workshop. The Maude Lewis exhibit is a must see!

Cool

The collections didn't feel like they had a unifying vision or theme, but the pieces were nice.

My wife was just extatic that the Maude Lewis collection was on display.

(Translated) Other than Maud Lewis, all the artists were unknown. (Original) モード・ルイス以外は、知らない作家ばかりでした。

While on vacay take in some art. Nice array of Nova Scotia, Group of Seven and contemporary art for only $12. It was a good experience while in Halifax on a raining day.

The Maud Lewis exhibit is well worth it

Always interesting displays and installations of art work.

The Maud Lewis exhibit is incredible, some other interesting works as well. Not a huge collection but well worth the visit.

Great collection and interesting current exhibit

I went there primarily to see the Maude Lewis exhibit, which is great. Also saw the port of Halifax c.1918 art exhibit, too. Most of the rest of the gallery can be skipped, although the rental/sale room, just off of the Maude Lewis room, is very good.

(Translated) A beautiful and spacious building. The people are very friendly and although the exhibits are very small they are very interesting. (Original) Un edificio hermoso y amplio. Las personas muy amables y aunque las exposiciones son muy pequeñas son muy interesantes.

Just awesome. We went on Thursday evening when the admission was free. The exhibits were great. Took us about an hour and a half to view. The Maud Lewis house is a must see and the folk art collection.

Architecture adds to experience The gallery is spread between two buildings connected by a lower level. On a hot summer weekend this made for a cool, enjoyable, thoughtful meander. The curators have made very good use of the maze-space, highlighting the architecture challenge of two buildings and turning it into a positive. Bonus: Sweet gift shop and an even better coffee shop attached. Escape summer, winter, rain - here.

(Translated) This museum is located in Nova Scotia, Canada, and it is said that the works of My Love, a true movie from Maud Lewis screened in Korea in 2017, are on display. (Original) 캐나다 노바 스코샤에 있는 박물관으로 2017년 한국에서 상영된 Maud Lewis 의 실화 영화인 내사랑의 작품들이 전시되어 있다고 한다

We place art e great customer service!

Intimate and well-curated.

Art, art, art!!!

Loved seeing Maud Lewis' home and her wonderful paintings

A great, family friendly experience. Admission is low, so even if you're not an art lover, you have so little to loose by checking it out.

Bit too much Maud Lewis for me, but it's free Thursdays 5-9

Great collection of Maud lewis paintings, as well as great first nation art.

Maud Lewis' house on display was really amazing. Free after 5 on Thursdays is a great offer.

Beautiful exhibits, nice cafe for a coffee and a sweet, friendly, helpful docents.

Great art work! Black culture display was amazing!

Currently exhibiting the Salzinnes Antiphonal, very impressive! Not to mention the large permanent collection of Maude Lewis's beautiful art.

Maude Lewisexcellent

Great Space for March Break! Kids really enjoyed it.

Terrific exhibits - especially Maude Lewis - and super friendly staff!

Amazing Art gallery with lots of Art displays which are always changing

Decent if you like art.

Just did not like exhibits the time I went there. Not my taste. Hopefully they change it soon. Only liked painting below.

I enjoyed spending time in this Art Gallery on last hours of my stay in Halifax.

Got to go for free! Was lots of fun for the family.

Seen the movie of Maud Lewis' life, now see the paintings and cottage.

Spectacular pieces! Just a few of my many faves.

#herewearehere So powerful - this exhibit never gets old. Fourth visit!

Very very interesting great selection of art to view ,staff was fantastic .

(Translated) Beautiful exhibitions. (Original) Belles expositions.

A lovely collection of Canadian art. The highlight is the Maud Lewis house, a masterwork.

Great artworks and nice ambience

I live locally and still enjoy visiting the Art Gallery of N.S. More locals should check it out. Can't go wrong with Maude Lewis and some Group of Seven.

I am member of the art gallery. Recently, I enjoyed it and found that it had a lot to take in. The gallery caters to a variety of art tastes. It is accessible. The gallery also has a cafe that is not actually operated by the gallery (serves a very light latte) The layout is confusing. It is free on Thursday evenings.

There is free admission one evening a week, I think, to visit this great gallery. Many Canadian artists are on display.

Not as much art as I thought there would be but it was super fun and the fact it was free was ????????. The top floor was my favorite very interesting was worth the visit!

Excellent visit. The Maude Lewis exhibit was very interesting.

Quiet and thoughtful art

Great Maud Lewis Exhibit

What an absolute gem! I was able to enjoy some fantastic folk art, AND because it was a Wednesday I was able to enjoy an art lesson (which I believe goes through winter not sure of the dates but check). I felt so abundantly lucky to be there, I will come back again.

Came to Halifax for a conference and was bummed the weather on my only free day was dreadfully wet and awful. Decided to check out the Art Gallery and am SO pleased I did. The Maud Lewis exhibit was absolutely wonderful. I found the Shary Boyle & Emily Vey Duke exhibit to be really fascinating & I LOVED the Light Fantastic neon exhibit. Exploring the Gallery was a wonderful experience and the lovely woman at the customer service desk shared stories of Maud Lewis from her childhood. I highly recommend this place.

I hadn't been here before and really enjoyed it. I went to see the Maud Lewis exhibit and it is really nice. I found some of the art Very Interesting as well

It's a lovely place to relax and take in the Diverse art exhibitions

This is a great sized gallery perfect for a short afternoon visit. Loved the Maud Lewis exhibit. Staff are great. My Dad forgot his Visa card at the museum and they were so kind and helpful about it. They mailed it all the way back to us in Ontario!

Well set up. My daughter and I enjoyed it very much.

Beautiful art gallery

Staff excellent sharing info about paintings.

Been here several times and loved it. Had a coffee with a friend at Pavia and really enjoyed it

Beautiful art in a beautiful building

Nice gallery

Very informative talented local artists

(Translated) One of the best art galleries in Halifax Dynamic exhibits and exhibitions make each visit a different impression Atmosphere and lighting can provide an immersive art viewing experience Those who like Maud Lewis or those who have watched movies should definitely not miss it (Original) 哈利法克斯最好的艺术馆之一 动态的展品及展览让每一次去的观感都不太一样 氛围和灯光能提供沉浸式的艺术观赏体验 喜欢Maud Lewis或者是看过电影的朋友是绝对不能错过的

Great history and local artists along with (at the time of this writing) more famous works like Dali, but it could be improved by having a better walk through system so you don't have to simply wander about and hope you see everything. (think of those little projected light arrows at IKEA and you'll get the idea) As with any art gallery you'll probably resonate with some works and be completely oblivious to the importance/significance of others - and that's OK. The point is to get out there and see what you think and feel when you are experiencing their work. The only real criticism is that there was a lot of work in progress/exhibit building at the time of our visit. I would hope to see all of the space utilized and at 100% when the gallery is open to the public. Photos are allowed, just no FLASH photos!

Loved the Maude Lewis exhibit. Her charming little home can be viewed for real. Happy paintings through all her life.

Enjoyed most of the art but disliked the modern section.

Very cheap and it’s beautiful.

Very nice little gallery. Often have something very interesting. Not sure it is worth the price of admission unless you are going to see something specific.

Fascinating little museum. Loved the Maud Lewis gallery. Nice coffee and gift shop.

The guide I had was wonderful. I went in the evening and loved the interaction I had with my small tour group. The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia would be a regular place of visitation for me if I lived in the area.

The best part was the Maude Lewis exhibit

Wonderful Arts collections on display and highly educated staff. Must see the Maud Lewis collection and the Autism Art displays when you visit.

It was a little disappointing that so much gallery space was not in use, but what we did see was very good. The Maud Lewis exhibition is remarkable, an amazing art conservation success. The Arthur Lismer (Group of Seven) as war artist exhibit was very interesting, and seeing Inuit art is always a treat. On a more prosaic note, we recommend the spicy salami panini at the café.

Lovely gallery.

Beautiful art collections, well represented.

I am not a museum kind of person but still some things amazed me like the artwork with porcupine quills ....

Very nice

Beautiful art, friendly staff

Loved the manuscript exhibition - their exhibition fabrication department has done an excellent job with the unobtrusive mounts for the books!

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia offers numerous exhibitions from traditional Japanese paintings over contemporary arts involving lights to the painted house of Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis. There is something for every taste. The visit lasted roughly one and a half hours and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Kind and helpful staff and loooots to see.

it was really good

Great gallery with very accommodating and friendly staff

Went to see the Maudie exhibit. Great staff.

Nice

A lovely place to spend two hours exploring the galleries.

Great place to visit.

Small but beautiful collection.

Awesome Titanic exhibit. Tons of cool stuff to learn and great to take kids aged 8-13! Would 10/10 recommend!

Loved this place, Has amazing collection of east coasts artists. Of course a must place to visit if you appreciate various arts or if you're and artistic just looking for some motivation.

Great gallery!

Expected more from this gallery, but they have a wonderful collection of Maud Lewis’s Art and her little house, which I found very interesting, was worth a visit.

Maude Lewis display very popular at present, plus some unexpected Group of Seven pieces, with Maritimes connections.

A really eclectic selection of artwork from all kinds of cultures, time periods and individual approaches to art, all well-laid out over an interesting and dynamic space. You're very likely to find stuff that you love alongside that which does nothing for you. Make an effort to check out the Maude Lewis exhibition, as well as the other paintings rooted in Nova Scotia life. Entry is free on Thursday evenings!

Staff was super friendly and great to chat with.

I went to this place in grade 7 it was crazy

A very nice visit to an art gallery. Smaller than some I have been to, but they have a very strong showing of indigenous and African Nova Scotian art. Well worth the visit!

Great Maud Lewis section.

Small very small

Absolutely a great place to visit! Had a wonderful experience

Hope you’re having

Interesting place, but really confusing to walk around.

Cool place. Go Thursday between 5-9 it's free!

It's an art gallery

Halifax is VERY fortunate to have such an art gallery. It features an ecclectic variety of permanent and temporary exhibits, and is an exceptionally well run establishment, while at the same time being reasonably priced. I don't go there nearly as often as i should, but just knowing it is there is a blessing, and i take visitors there when they come out our Fair City. The architecture is modern, spacious, and everything a major art gallery should be. No complaints from my section of the Peanut Gallery!!

Beautiful exhibits of local and Canadian artists, and easy to follow social distancing.

Wow experience

You are not allowed to touch anything

We visited on a Thursday night when it's free to the public and fortuitously started on a guided tour given by Liza. Liza’s enthusiasm was contagious and the insight she provided into the artists, their relationships and how the pieces were curated, sequenced and displayed was a valuable addition to the gallery. She let us know that she wanted to have a discussion more than just narrate a tour which increased our engagement. Sharing her knowledge (and happy to do so) and experience with the pieces in the gallery made the visit much more than it ever could have been by us just stumbling around on our own. Thanks so much Liz!

(Translated) I come here for the second time and find what else to see. This time the exhibition of the Impressionists. (Original) Прихожу сюда уже второй раз и нахожу что ещё посмотреть. В этот раз выставка импрессионистов.

Best gallery was the Maud.

Stunning exhibit of native art and a second from Black Canadian artists.

Small gallery, a good spot for someone who likes Maud Lewis.

Ran in to see the Maud Lewis exhibit on a quick stop downtown. Amazing to see what we had learned in school.

Great place gives any art gallery a run for their money

Love looking at all the art on the wall

(Translated) Very nice museum. (Original) Très beau musée.

Luv Maud

Love the Maude Lewis exhibit. Free Thursday admission from 5 pm to 9 pm. A nice little evening outing.

Good place to visit

i loved it here, the art was incredible. can't wait for my next visit!

A must go when in Halifax at least once if not more. Loved the Maud Lewis exhibit. Was cool to see her house. I am very pleased they got it fixed it back to its glory.

We came to see the Maud Lewis exhibition, which is now the subject of a movie, and were surprised to find they were fine with photos as long as no flash is used, so I've attached some. If you haven't seen the movie based on her life, it's a very enjoyable and highly rated drama. We were also pleasantly surprised to see some nice art pieces from the group of seven in another part of the museum.

A lot of fun. Great experience.

Just the right size. It's a wonderful place to enjoy great art without getting overwhelmed. Cute little gift shop, too.

It was great. Maud Lewis home is definitely the highlight. There is a variety of artworks here and while I can't say I have the taste to fully appreciate all of them, I'm sure there will a piece here and there that will leave you with lasting impressions.

Great art gallery with good helpful staff

Phenomenal institution for Halifax. Lots of excellent artwork in a gorgeous downtown location. Great way to spend an afternoon.

Great place to spend a couple hours.

This was my first time at the art gallery of Nova Scotia. I have mixed feelings. I loved the Maud Lewis exhibit. Amazing to see local talent being displayed ... Her house ... Everything about it was awesome. The prime minister cartoon exhibit was fun. But other than that it was quite disappointing. Granted my frame of reference is the AGO in Toronto but even the art that was there wasn't displayed very well. No seating in front of the art for people who want to spend more time in one place. The tour guide had very strong opinions about the art which was a bit disappointing as well. She was not very knowledgeable but definitely expressed her likes and dislikes which was distracting and not a very good experience, for me at least. I'd like to be able to make up my own mind about what I like and not like and not be influenced by someone else especially someone who works at the gallery. Over all ... Meh will I go again not unless there is a special exhibition that I know about beforehand and know the reviews.

Saw a wonderful exhibit of Maud Lewis. So moving. Staff were knowledgable and helpful. The Pratt and Colville paintings were amazing too.

The folk art from Maritimes

lovely place to visit great art work

great place with all family. Especially on Thursday for free

Two hours will let you see everything but not really contemplate it in the chilly, silent halls of the gallery so don't leave it until the end of the day or just before your regular lunch time. This is a gallery about Nova Scotia's past and present whether the subject is an issue of global relevance interpreted by an NS artist, a local issue or how global issue takes its shape in the province. Seems a little small but there's lots to see and lots of value for the entrance fee.

This is an amazing gallery, it has so much to offer, including a display of Maud Lewis art. A definite must see in Yarmouth NS

Wonderful adventure for folks of all ages.

Nicely done. Went to see Maude exhibit.

Exhibits are nice but the layout is very confusing and it's hard to even find the front desk

Lots of empty spaces ....these could be filled to the brim with paintings of local artists. Maude Lewis circle was very interesting...personal sharing of contact with Maude a great idea.

Never disappoints!

I would definitely recommend taking the tour

The Maud Lewis exhibit is a must see!

It was not overcrowded and it was free admission.Loved the variety in art and had an amazing time here.

Great temporary exhibition

(Translated) Incredible (Original) Increíble

Great place! Good exhibitions and a. Nice gift Shop and cafeteria.

Always good.

Excellent work.Nice to be here and to have the time to enjoy the art.Not too busy which was good.

Loved visiting for the Maud Lewis exhibit. Wonderful gallery

Maud Adam's display of artwork and art from many other Canadians- worth visiting

Really nice! And the people were kind to us

Great setting and top-notch exhibits from internationally-acclaimed and Atlantic Canadian artists. Plus, Maude Lewis' house.

VERY interesting !

Great Gallery

Had a really great time seeing the art on display.

It is nice place talks about different things like history. However, it is very small. I visited museum in smaller cities and accumulated more arts.

Very interesting ! Nova Scotia is beautiful- just wait until COVID calms down . The hassle isn't worth it !!

An interesting place to visit with a wide variety of art to see. It's free on Thursdays so it's really worth a visit!

Absolutely great place to visit

Seriously? OMG! I'm reminded of the fable, The Emperor's New Clothes. A five year old could paint or "build" half that stuff. Unfortunately it wouldn't get displayed because they have no formal training or an art degree. See attached pic of a nice pile of "art" on the floor...pennies. Oh wow! Genius! You must have an art degree?

Who doesn't like art?

Very nice

Great Maude Lewis exhibit.

Maud Lewis exhibit is definitely a must see! The remainder of the gallery is a little confusing to follow but the pieces includes are quite nice. I would recommend going Thursday nights when there is free admission!

Beautiful

I visited in 2017 and 2018 - I love the Maud Lewis exhibit and maritime art. The gallery itself was bigger than I expected.

The Maud Lewis house was amazing as was the Inuit art. Easily spent 2 hours here.

A lot of really Low quality art strewn thoughtlessly amongst a few great pieces

Conference room facility great for meetings

Brilliant display of Maud Lewis' naive folk art and brilliant cabin, carefully ensconced in a dedicated space. Wonderful displays of historic works of Canadian art, from aboriginal to classical. Could easily spend days lost in examination of the varied exhibits.

Absolutely stunning

(Translated) Disappointing (Original) Décevant

Loved this art gallery

You were closed and we missed Maudi!

A beatiful gallery, well curated, friendly staff. Highly recommended for anyone.

Really fun place to go! Lots of different exhibits that can take anywhere from one to two hours if you take your time. Definitely recommended, especially during the free viewing hours.

Currently the home of Maud Lewis, the Nova Scotian primitive artist, whose trials in life, and the joy she seemed to meet them with, have led to her becoming a cherished part of the regions art landscape.

Kinda bland

A great way to spend an afternoon. Gorgeous building filled with incredible art installations. My favorite is the Maude Lewis exhibit where they actually have transported her actual house into it! Incredible.

Wonderful esp maud lewis exhibit

Totally worth s visit. I have lived in Halifax for years and never gone. But now I know I need to go back again.

3 stars because of the Maud Lewis house.

Outstanding

The shows were great. The place is hard to navigate but the maps and directions are clear. The staff was... Strange. The person at the front desk really doesnt like the local art school? A new personnel was getting trained while we were trying to view art, it was really distracting. The person training him talked very loudly in the galleries. Our group was constantly referred to as girls despite containing no girls and clearly at least one man. We went specifically for the illuminated manuscript show and it was very well done.

Always awesome!

Comforting

Great spot to see lots of local art. Parking is a bit difficult but once you're there you're also close to the waterfront which has lots of other sights around Halifax

A quaint gallery. Well worth a visit for the enlightening Maude Lewis exhibit.

Wonderful art and such

Beautiful, loved the Maud Lewis showing. Thank you for saving and lovingly restoring her home for all of us to see. Alot of 1st Nation art. Just amazing.

Definitely worth checking out if you're in town. Lots of East coast art, obviously. Small but decent collect of older European art. Perfect for a rainy out cloudy day in Halifax. Won't take you more than 2 hours - probably less.

Maravilhosa galeria...com pinturas e quadros excepcionais...muito lindo.

Beautiful works of art! Maud Lewis exhibition was on - learned so much about this artist and enjoyed seeing her house as part of the exhibition. Happened to stop in on a Thursday evening - and admission was free, what a nice surprise.

Maude Lewis exhibit is worth the visit.

It was a delight to take Marie to see the Maud Lewis collection and purchase some beautiful prints. Checked of one of her things to do off her bucket list.

Everything was so amazing, I especially loved the Maud Lewis Collection, I love her story, she is so inspiring!

Great fun.

The Maude Adams collection is wonderful. Very little of the floor area is used for public display.

Loved Maude exhibit.

Maud Lewis exhibit is fabulous and helps you appreciate your blessings considering what she had to endure.

It was a awesome experience.

Loved it

Maude Lewis display is exceptional

Loved the Maude Lewis exhibit. The art gallery has really come a long way over the years but needs to expand even further as us Nova Scotians are full of artistic creativity and curiosity!

I entered this gallery on a Thursday night, free of charge, as advised by my tour guide in the same afternoon. I was pleasantly surprised at the huge collection of art here. They varied from simple art form by Nova Scotia artists to international ones.

Awesome displays of art. Great fun for family and your significant other.

If you wanna know about local artists , this is the place to go. When you go DONT FORGET to check out "Miss Chiefs Wet Dream"

Maud Lewis exhibit and Group of 7 exhibit were so well done!

You have to see the Maude exhibit!

Very judgemental at front desk and exhibits were small and uninteresting.

I had a wonderful afternoon at the gallery made even better by Vicky, one of the gallery's passionate and knowledgeable volunteers. Because it was a slow day, I had a personal tour of the Maude Lewis exhibit and I learned so much and enjoyed the beauty of one of the Monkman works. Thank you for this experience!

Quite the collection! Beautiful building!

Medium sized exhibits. Interesting Nova Scotia pieces. Can easily see it in 2 hours

A cute art gallery in downtown Halifax. Good collection of works by Canadian artist Maude Lewis. Great museum cafe- delicious food. Nice museum shop.

Maude Lewis!!!

(Translated) Maud Lewis's paintings, a world wonder, a must see (Original) הציורים של מוד לואיס, פלא עולמי, אתר חובה

Very confusing layout, but the Maud Lewis room is worth all the wandering around.

A must see in Halifax.

Surprising little gem of a place on the south shore

Well curated art museum located in downtown Halifax. They are following strict Covid protocols with contact tracing and one way arrows. We had to first do a QR code check in at the desk and was given a clip on to show staff that we had already checked in. For the months of July and August 2021, all admission was free so we happily roamed the building. There were artists and artwork displayed from the east and west coast of Canada, international artists, as well as the indigenous art. A lot of interesting exhibits and two buildings (East and West) to walk around and explore. Highly recommended if you’re interested in art or want to kill time by walking around an air conditioned building with lots to look at.

It is an excellent collection of art, however there is an overwhelming political bias on many of the contemporary works that can be off putting. If you stick to the local and historical art galleries it is a pleasant museum however, unless you're comfortably left, steer clear of its more modern "art".

Nice

Really cool exhibits!

Love the collection of Maud Lewis.

Information about the artists display help understand the exhibits better. Many different media and styles are present in the collection. The Maud Lewis exhibit is a must see!

Despite the many more favorable reviews posted by others, in my opinion the AGNS is a stunning disappointment. The building interior is dark and confusing to navigate and whatever architectural charm it once had is long gone. But the main problem is the collection on display, or rather the lack of same. There is an indifferent jumble of folk art and an equally unimpressive batch of native art. The rest of the permanent collection is tiny and mediocre with only a half dozen worthwhile pieces on display. Although it is said that the Gallery owns some nice historical portraits and Canadian and marine paintings, these have been hidden away for a couple of years and, to the best of my knowledge, there is no schedule to return them to public view. The emphasis now seems to be on temporary exhibitions of often second-tier Canadian artists. To be fair, they had decent exhibitions of Mary Pratt and Ken Monkman, but these are long gone. So what is left is a terrible bore. If you might be expecting something of the level of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, you won't find it at the AGNS. And compared to the major public galleries in Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto, well there is no comparison.

Go for the permanent Maud Lewis exhibit, featuring her awesome house. Really well done exhibit of an important artist. Highly recommended. The exhibit on first nations art eat also quite good.

Loved the Maud Lewis exhibit. The cottage is charming.

Work there

Also excellent for a coffee break

(Translated) Diversified works of art and the art gallery is well located in the city. (Original) Oeuvres d’art diversifiées et la galerie d’art est bien située en ville.

Complicated to maneuver around with covid protocols but the installations were well curated

Some fine works of art. Have a visit, spend some time. You will be glad you did.

Nice place and when you get to Yarmouth you just need to stop there. You will enjoy the nice place that is friendly and will help you to spend some time time visiting

It's a really wonderful and tiny gallery. I took the tour and was the best decision bc I heard lots of side stories. Give it a chance if you are close, totally worthy.

Wonderful display of Maud Lewis art and her little painted house.

I was hoping for so much more but 20 canvases of a mediocre quality (please remember art is in the eye of the beholder) in one room does not justify being termed a “gallery” I realize in these Covid times things are difficult but really Don’t bother going. With investment and some radical ideas like say bringing the “Annie Leibovitz” photo collection to Yarmouth as a major permanent attraction (but Halifax would never allow this) this could be a real asset to the south shore but the staffs embarrassment when asked “is that all of the gallery” says it all. Sorry to be very negative but that’s 20 minutes of my life I will not get back

Solid gallery. Of course it depends on what touring exhibits are there, but I have always enjoyed every visit.

The Maude Exhibit was so good! It took my wife and I about 2 hours to get through the both sections of the gallery. The staff was very nice too. Someone at the front desk was kind enough to give us a list of places to visit during your stay in Nova Scotia. Highly recommend!

Free on Thursday evenings.

Its not bad

(Translated) You can find there the original house of Maud Lewis and several of her works. (Original) On peut y trouver la maison originale de Maud Lewis et plusieurs de ses œuvres.

Impressive painting by Ken Monkman and much more

Small gallery, but packed in with lots to see.

My son went there for a week for his art gallery school ...he really like it...very good for him., because he loves drawing and painting...

Friendly staff

Fortunate to have this great gallery in our city.

Very nice place to visit and totally worth the admittance fee. Some exibits change so there is totally chances to return. Puts a wide array of Nova Scotia and Canadian art work on display.

Wonderful!

It is bigger than I expected. Interesting art. Each floor has different kind of art. You can easily choose what kind of art you are into. Very innovative
