I knew a little bit about Africville from having lived here for a few years and having studied it a little bit during law school. But this is an immersive experience. Every Canadian should see this museum.

The staff were extremely welcoming and informative on the history and stories that come from Africville. One can't help but feel the impeding industrialization that the residents would have felt as the area is surrounded by the busy piers and container ports of Halifax. The interactive and detailed displays throughout the reconstructed church paint an accurate picture of what life was like before and after the forced expulsion of the African Canadian community here. This would be an ideal place to bring your family or school group to learn of this dark period in Nova Scotian history. The adjacent park is also a great place to run around and take in the surroundings. The spirit and determination of Africville comes alive through the staff and stories told via the museum.

Love this place! My only pet peeve is the facility is not large enough to accommodate large crowds. It is small and needs an additional building on site to accommodate events. This is a must visit for ALL HRM residents and nonresidents plus any visitors to the HRM, whether they be Nova Scotians or from away. This should be a must visit for EVERY school in NS.

A nice, small museum that serves as a sad reminder of our all-too-recent hateful history. The demolishing of Africville is still very much within living memory, and it's very visible beyond the church interior what Halifax had done to its taxpayers here; by intentionally surrounding it with heavy industry and polluting facilities. The staff was very helpful and admission was a good price. You can read the primary documents of the city's apology and listen to the spirits celebrating the removed neighborhood. Definitely recommend the visit, and feel free to ask lots of questions!

Never forget Africville. This small, but intimately curated museum and park is a loving testimony to the terrible tragedy in Halifax where a community of Black Canadians was dismantled and destroyed and eventually given recognition by the government. It was heartbreaking, but also inspiring from the point of view that the people from that tight knit community fought for their legacy and at least got the church rebuilt and the area renamed. Totally worth a visit.

A very important museum for local and national history and culture. A nice park outside the replica church, friendly staff. Learn about the neglect of the local African-Canadian population in Halifax and efforts to reconcile by the government. Surprisingly, this is a national historical site but doesn't receive funding. Still struggling. Shameful.

It was a humbling experience visiting this museum and learning the history of africville. The workers here were so lovely and took the time to really explain the history. I was so moved by the resilient spirit the former residents of africville had. I hope one day they get the government can repay the families what they are owed and much more.

In the 1960s Canada dispossessed an entire community, coincidentally at the same time that serious civil rights violations were occurring in the United States. Canadians are very proud of their heritage yet somehow the travesty at Africkville occurred and Canada is ok with that. This shameful wrong needs to be re-examined in the true spirit of reconciliation. It’s a beautiful museum that does its best to memorialize and celebrate a vanished community.

I think everyone needs to visit this museum and listen to the story of what happened to Africville from the perspectives of those who were affected. It's also located at a very lovely spot right on the Bedford basin, with picnic tables and a playground nearby.

I loved learning about the history of Africville, especially from the two ladies who worked there and were the children/grandchildren of Africville residents. They took the time to speak to my wife and I and teach us a lot about the dark history of Nova Scotia not many people speak about or acknowledge.

This restored church on the site of the former African/Nova Scotian community gives and excellent history of the community that once was on this location. Staff in the museum were helpful and friendly, filling in additional information or explaining the exhibits. If you visit make sure to also wander through the rest of the park which provides nice views out over bedford Basin.

I cannot comment on the inside of the museum as we were not lucky enough to visit while it was open, but the grounds are well manicured and the building seems well cared for. The adjacent park would be a lovely place for a picnic.

The museum is tucked away in what used to be the community of Africville. If you think you are going to an industrial area, don't worry, you're not going in the wrong direction, it actually is hidden from Bedford highway. The museum is filled with interesting tidbits of information that you might not encounter by simple research. Despite having watched numerous documentaries and read quite a bit on the subject I still learned much from the visit. This is also in large part thanks to the general manager, who is a veritable well of information and took the time to answer all my questions. I highly recommend a visit!

Important part of Canada's history with dedicated staff. Went there with a group of 10 visitors and I can't recommend it highly enough. Unfortunately totally neglected by the city, the province, the nation. Seeing that there are no bus stops, no sidewalks, no bike lanes leading to this famous site of Canadian history and the fact that the museum is run without regular government funding shows that the discrimination against the black community in Canada and its history of oppression have not ended yet. I usually don't write long reports here on Goolge like this, but it was definitely worth sitting down writing this after a very pleasant visit. Go and visit!

This museum uncovers an important part of Nova Scotian and Canadian history that has largely been forgotten/ignored/ gone on taught to the larger public, which is a real shame. I learned a lot here.

Very lovely museum and the park is beautiful. The manager of the museum was very informative and interesting with lots of cool history and facts about Africville. The area is an extremely important part of Nova Scotia’s and Canadas history and has a very rich past and needs more recognition and awareness from the city of Halifax. We were quite disgusted and shocked to see that there were no available walking routes nor any public transportation for the museum. We had to walk through a grassy trail by the highway and through the docks just to get here with no actual signs pointing to the direction of the building except for a road named after the historic community. The workers of the museum have a petition for this purpose, I would encourage everyone to sign it. On top of this, we learned that the landfill site has an 2 year contract to dispose of waste right into the shore of Africville park. Quite pathetic that the museum is going through the same difficulties and challenges that this historic community had experienced tenfold, years ago.

My daughter and I went here today as we finally remembered to take the exit of Barrington Street. As an immigrant I don’t have the historical knowledge and as my kids did a large class component on in school it was well time to visit this museum. I knew a little bit from a few co-workers but had no idea what the full story is. While a small museum the impact it has is big and hopefully contributes to more understanding and prevent atrocities such as these in the future. And while the location is obviously the right one, more publicity, signs and attention down town and across HRM and the province would be helpful to share the message. As a person who grew up in a very diverse environment and was born in the same year the community was bulldozed it was hard to read the stories and think of the immense impact on the community. Lets hope that the museum, the projects in school, etc. all contribute to a more acceptance and understanding and maybe one day even more recognition and compensation Eddie Carvery (and others) is still fighting for.
