(Translated) Josiah Henson, the hero of Uncle Tom's Cabin. After escaping from Kentucky, where he was a slave, Josiah Henson settled in southern Ontario. It was made famous when Harriet Beecher Stowe was inspired by his memoirs to write his famous novel. The place is both sober and inspiring.

There’s an amazing amount of interesting information. Good introduction video and exhibits. The buildings are the best part with the artifacts out for display. Make sure to check out the cemetery’s as they’re interesting to see. My issues were the some of the staff were rude at arrival (talking to each other and not acknowledging guests in a timely manner and I’m pretty sure it was the manager Brenda) and we were made to feel somewhat guilty for the fact that they were busy. I was surprised that the washroom doesn’t have a change table. Had to change and feed my baby outside as there wasn’t anywhere else to go.

Alejandro Aguirre

It was really cool to hear about the life of the father of king T'challa

Very interesting and commonly not discussed history If say the one thing took away was the "uncle Tom" slur that is heard makes no sense i have since come to understand 'Sambo' would be the more appropriate reference. Shocking how someone's name could be associated with such a bad connotation when he did so much good. Boggles the mind. On our first visit i was so overwhelmed with info I wasn't expecting and we went later in the day I will visit again post pandemic. Black history really should be just merged into "History" while in sure there are bad stories regarding race groups (especially with native people) why world positive stories like this not be part of Canada well publicized history

Sadly it was close due to the current pandemic situation. All the pictures I posted where from outside. I would be a pleasure to see how the reverent Henson created this Black Community and how he taught them different arts to support their communities as freemen. I will come here back, for sure.

I returned to Rev. Josiah Henson's home, Dawn Settlement, after many, many years. A 6th grade teacher brought us there. That visit kicked off my keen interest in African American history, as well as African history. I returned after 40 years away. It was awesome!!! So Awesome!!! I love this place and am grateful to the Ontario Heritage Trust that maintain it.

It would have been better if we had a guided tour of Josiah's house but this is limited by the COVID restrictions. The staff were knowledgeable and there wasn't any political agenda with the information presented. Instead they allowed people to make their own conclusions about the horrors of slavery.

A woman in charge named Brenda was very rude upon arrival. We stood at the front for a good minute before someone even spoke to us. When she did acknowledge us we were told that they were busy as she sat at the front chatting with others who were making a documentary of the place... Sorry but that shouldn't be conducted at the front desk, appreciate your customers and welcome them. As for the tour it was wonderful. We had a well knowledged young man give us a tour and answer all of our questions. Very interesting place to visit. Brenda 0 stars Staff 5 stars

We came to visit Tuesday May 14 and while we were reading the plaque a lady rather rudely said they were closed until the weekend. I felt she did not want us there. We had taken a week off to tour some of the Underground Railway areas and the Black museums. But were we not welcome because we were white??? Please correct your website about hours open.

(Translated) If you like history, you will feel comfortable here. History you can touch. Something hidden and hard to find. And: Hardly any Canadian knows "Uncle Tom's Hut". What is mandatory reading for us does not seem to interest the Canadian so much. (Original) Wer Geschichte mag, wird sich hier wohlfühlen. Geschichte zum Anfassen. Josiah Henson was a former slave who's multi-volume autobiography was the basis for Harriet Beecher Stowe's 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'. His work to create the Dawn Settlement and to assist newly escaped slaves learn trades and make new lives in the freedom of Ontario, should be applauded and taught to school children when they are told of the underground railway. The site is not huge and has some of the original buildings but the historical displays are worth seeing. This is a truly important North American cultural site

Mrs. Sparling

Excellent location with many things to see

J'aime Les Frogs

Excellent historical information. Displays are well done. I was disappointed by the washroom facilities (there was a lot that was out of stock or out of order). While we did arrivedl a little over an hour before closing, the guide in the building as well as the person at the cash in the gift shop were very short and kept reminding us that we only had an hour. I thought that was odd as we were told they recommend an hour for the visit (and we had a little over an hour). We were up front when we arrived and knew we had a short amount of time. We asked to see the 12 mins video at 3:20 and were told no because it was 'too late'. We just didn't feel very welcome overall. The presentation of information is very well done. The gift shop had many unique items and I was impressed by the selection of children's books for sale. There was a cool resource in the church about hymns and their origins including some sung on plantations and others by Harriett Tubman. I would rate the site a 5 when it comes to historical information, a 3 for facilities and a 2 for staff interaction with visitors.
