Maritime museum. What can I say if you like this thing?

Miranda Harper

Matt Grant

Loved it!

Robin Seymour

I found this museum more like an overview of Maritime history and really more of a shrine to the St Roch. So in that understanding, it's a nice place with lots of artifacts from the ship and even the ship herself, sailed there to be a museum piece. It's a wonderful glimpse of life in a world of ice and hardship with several kid friendly zones. Don't plan on more than 2 hours though.

Emma D.

The museum was bigger than how it’s looked from outside. It was interesting to see inside the RCMP ship

Alphonsus To

Wow, what a gem if you've got kids under 5: free for them (14 bucks adult I think), huge play area, and the big boat (Roch) is super cool. Air conditioned. Can't eat or drink inside, have to check backpack in at front desk, only downside with the wee ones.

Ben Schrom

Very cool for what it was. A bit overpriced but they need the money.

Great for a fun yet entertaining day trip

Truly enjoyed my visit. The exhibits were very interesting,my hubby and i enjoyed it and my kids enjoyed it too. The best was when we got to board the ship. Had a fun time. Would recommend it, Thanks!

It appears certain people are using the museum for their own interest 'Dutch Biz'? we offer vital archives to the management and they never bothered to contact us after saying they would do so.

Malista Kara McIntyre

The highlight of this museum is the massive ship it is built around. While there are great exhibits that offer you insight into some of the maritime history of Vancouver, I found it a little lacking. Would love to see more about how the maritime impacted Vancouver and the surrounding area. Kids will love it for the interactive areas and ability to move through with ease.

Sydney Eatz

The Vancouver Maritime Museum is a clean and informative museum. It has the St. Roch - a complete ship inside the museum. A fantastic way to spend the day. - A Richard Trus review

$12.50, cheaper than its neighbour. Cool place to visit, get in for the video and access to the St Roch. After spending about half an hour with the ship, we were surprised to find there was another large section to the museum with interactive displays, great stories and model ships. More than we expected! This place is recommended. False Creek Ferry got us there from Downtown for $3.25 pp and we spent 2 hrs all up.

Pepa Llausas (Vivir Mirando al Mar)

Matt Goddyn

Fun! They let you enter the St. Roch vessel anytime, really neat to explore.

Samuel Richardson

Great place for kids or adults. I spent 2 hours there and didn't have time to visit everything. The guided tour of the ship was really interesting time, when I learned a lot about Arctic exploration.

Anyone interested in the naval history will find the displays have been well done

K.A. Wiggins

Love this place; it really plays well with modern hipster sensibilities: steampunk and nautical trappings galore. Highly recommended as a venue for private evening events - it's great fun wandering around the wooden ships, boats, industrial boating and pirate exhibits with a glass of wine in hand, playing 'grown-up' style. Or, yeah, good for actual kids too... dress-up, lots of toys (interactive exhibits), stuff to touch and put on and play with. Some great Vancouver and area history, along with the fun stuff. It's not the flashiest in terms of design; the interior is getting a bit dated and worn, looking more like a small university museum in places, but it's worth a visit if you're interested in maritime history, boats, or Vancouver-area history. Make a day of it and walk the seawall east to Granville Island - there's usually some gorgeous wooden boats moored along the waterfront. Plus, like, food and stuff at Granville Island. Ice cream ftw.

We went specifically for the Amundsen exhibit on his journey to the south pole. It was well worth the visit.

Learn about the ship that was in artic pole for 2 years!!! Climb on board, see how they used to live + there is a playroom for kids+ you can rent place for events

Alvin Wong

Fun place, but definitely geared more for adults then the younger kids. Exhibits are well done, with detailed models crafted with care, but the low level of interactive exhibits will lose the younger kids depending on that they find interesting. Other wise a well run ship that's unique within Vancouver

OMG! This place was AMAZING! BREATH TAKING! OUTSTANDING! I went here in 4th grade for a history field trip but now I'm in 6th and thought about writing a review! The staff where very nice and helpful and don't mind 50 kids asking Q's all at once you get what I mean. They have a great outdoor place for eating lunch and running around! :) And the best part was The Ship inside the Museum!!! they gave us a tour of the HOLE ship from top to bottom except for the engine room...But there was this great built in in the ship to see the engine room! and there where so many more thing to learn about there! and Cool old stuff that belonged to Natives of Canada!!! I'm planning on going again some time! I hope you choose this place to visit yourself cuz I promise you you will be AMAZED! :D xoxo!

Pleasantly surprised with this museum. The documentary about the ship was really outdated, but did contain some interesting info about ship's history. It was nice to be able to walk inside and explore the decks and the rooms. Almost missed the lower floor! And the ladder going up is steep, but very fun as you get to try what the sailors did daily. Very cool kids section too!

The Vancouver Maritime Museum is located in Vanier Park, west of False Creek in the neighborhood of Kitsilano on the Vancouver waterfront. Some of the museum permanent exhibitions includes: The Historic arctic exploration vessel St. Roch used by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Extensive galleries of model ships, including the famous model of the French warship Vengeur du Peuple made of pork and beef bones. She was built by French prisoners during the Napoleonic period. Children's Maritime Discover Centre An extensive collection of maritime art including artworks by Emily Carr. A large library and archives. Chung collection: Material relating to Canadian Pacific Steamships Outdoor displays: NASA undersea research vessel, the boiler of the Beaver - the first steamship in the Pacific Northwest. Heritage Harbour.

British Columbia has dropped the requirement to wear masks in indoor public spaces. Starting on July 1, 2021 wearing a mask in an indoor public space was recommended, but not mandatory, for those who are not fully vaccinated. But the staff of the museum insisted on wearing masks, thus imposing their own rules atop of governmental regulations.

The Vancouver Maritime Museum is everything Vancouver is. The best thing about it is how local it is, how it is all about Vancouver. It is a world class museum.

Good museum, even if it was small. Not many people here and the ticket price was discounted 25% because the gallery was closed

Vancouver Maritime Museum's main exhibit is the St. Roch, the first ship to successfully travel the Northwest Passage from west to east. You can watch a short video about it, walk around it and get on and inside the ship. There are a few other exhibits that are a lot less spectacular though. Visiting the entire museum takes about two hours.

Lucas Lawrence

Uniquely interesting place with beautiful architecture. Very kid friendly. Exploring the boats, the children’s play section, and the docks were highlights. Very hands-on. Small but worth the visit.

This museum provides a fascinating history to the people's and the discovery of Vancouver and Canada from a maritime perspectice. One special feature is that it houses the complete RCMP St. Roch vessel which was the first schooner to circumnavigate North America and second ship to go through the important Northwest Passage (it can be boarded and explored). The guided tours are especially informative. It is easy to spend half a day here. Onsite small pay parking lot.

Much better than I expected. From the website, and compared to our prior experience we didn't think this would amount to much. However we really enjoyed our time at this museum! We used to live in London UK, where there are many museums and they are massive, with all sorts of history inside, so we have been disappointed in the past in Vancouver simply because our expectations are set a bit too high. I was imagining that the Vancouver Maritime Museum would be nothing compared to the National Maritime Museum in London, which we used to frequent. However, I was really surprised, this was better! One of the things I really like about this museum is the St Roch, which you get to climb on board of and see the cabins up-close. Also the other exhibits are really good too. - Check out the kids zone too! One thing we used to get bored of in London was that we could never fully see a museum in one day, they were just too big. The Vancouver Maritime Museum isn't like that, it's just the right size! Check this out, and enjoy!

My review is about the summer camp for kids. Overall I am leaving a positive 4 star review. The camp program is interesting for kids, price is democratic. One star is lost, because, unfortunately (for us) the camp has overridden the BC's exemption allowing kids under 12 to not wear a f. cover. This led to an accident that a kid was wearing a dirty one. We also found inconsistencies in the museum safety policies. We had a discussion with the museum management about the accident. I am very glad that the management took this as improvement direction and demonstrated very human behavior during not very easy discussion regarding restrictions and pandemic rules and internal polices. I have a feeling that this is going be improved, turning this camp to a truly 5-star program. One more human-like example of behavior was when I asked to minimize usage of sanitizers and replace them with hand washing. It was heard and kids confirmed that they were washing hands. This is very different from some places, where kids are forced to sanitize hands multiple times (5-6-more times per day) leading to visible skin problems, but continuing to insist "safety" priority, and not hearing parents. Thanks to the museum for listening to parents and being on a kids' side.

One of my all time favorite memories was when my dad took my brother and I here, when we were about 4 and 8. Had a lasting impression, and even though most of the information went right over my 8 year old brain, I still found it fascinating. Plus, $11 for an adult? I think I'll be visiting every week!

The museum was bigger than how it’s looked from outside. It was interesting to see inside the RCMP ship

The “Illuminatrios”

It's a smaller museum but I really liked the everything they had on display, the in house ship which you can go into, the model ships, the interactive lighthouse replica, as well as the ship "control room" replica. Although I will say the kids section where they had drawers with different items in it, seemed old and dirty. Still an enjoyable visit, however. Oh they also have a telescope looking out to the harbor which was nice.

Good for what it is, just be aware it's not very large. I liked the models, the boat, and features, it's actually quite a good stop, and for most people worth the stop. I'm glad I came, and it would be 5 stars if it were even bigger. As is, maybe a 1 hr stop or so for most people.

Lots of parking, and great for toddlers and little kids! There is a boat inside they can get on and explore. May get a bit boring faster for kids a little bit older (8+). Location was really nice, next to kitslano beach. A great place to spend on a rainy day, probably would take only 1-2 hours to finish the whole museum, as it is on the smaller side.

This place is small but really great. I got lucky and went on a quiet day so I had a personal tour of the St. Roch and that was super cool. I never thought a boat could have so many stories to tell. That is their major attraction but not the extent of their collection, so make sure to take a look around at everything else.
