Breathtaking grounds and entrance to the gallery with the option of ground pass and usage of trails, amenities & gift shop. Separate pricing for Art gallery entrance and requires pre-online registration. Unfortunately, gallery booked to capacity today but was still able to enjoy the gorgeous grounds and well marked trails. Family & stroller friendly with cyclists & dog walkers also sharing the trails and footpaths. To complete your visit enjoy Kleinberg’s historic Main Street all within a short walking distance.
An artistic place located in an artistic town. Very quiet and clean. Walking on the trails in it, enjoy the tranquility of this environment gives you, was a refreshing experience.
As a member I really enjoy being able to go often. The staff are so welcoming. Today we were able to walk around the grounds. Look forward to being able to tour the inside again. Thank you.
An art collection like no other, in a truly beautiful physical setting. This is an iconic place for the Group of Seven, and a touchstone for Canada' artistic identity. It's a place where you can learn profound things about what it is to be Canadian, in ways that go far beyond words.
Wonderful experience. Amazing collection. Super staff. Great gift shop. A must visit and be sure to walk the grounds.
Wonderful museum and surrounding area. The staff is professional and the cafeteria is marvelous addition. Loved my visit.
Very nice place for the collection, but unfortunately Canadian paintings are not as good as Europian
Great museum. Plan for a trip duration of 1.5 - 2 hours. Nice way to spend a weekend afternoon.
It's one of my fav Art Museum. Unfortunately, today, due to crowdy day of Family Day, we decided not to enter there. We postponed the visit but the Walter Philips' "At the Lake" is must to see. Instead, we walked around the Garden of Sculptures. Highly recommended.
Walking the halls and getting lost in the art is a wonderful day spent. Enriches the soul and eye. We really enjoyed our visit and walk thorough the park. Very scenic area.
It is a beautiful gallery; I loved the place! Such cozy and stunning paintings.
Great outdoor grounds and statue park to explore during Covid
Stunning art in 100 acres of forested trails. Beautifully inspiring and relaxing.
Superb collection of Canadian art !! The Coronavirus protocols and the staff were excellent. Highly recommended !!
This is a combination of really nice park with very impressive Native's art gallery. You'll be able to find best of both worlds and worth visiting. Always enjoy returning here.
The Staff was Very Informative and Curtious. Security was On Point and Very Professional. We will definitely be back again!
Art gallery with lots of students coming for day trip. Learnt a lot about Canadian artists. The workers seems so passionate about the history. Great place for weddings. I can't wait until The Food Dudes will be the caterer in house.
Every Canadian should be proud of this gallery gem nestled in a forest seen this time in its glorious autumn colors. The iconic Group of Seven collection is in such harmony with the Canadian landscape which inspired so many of these paintings. Its really worth walking the grounds as part of the experience.
The art gallery is wonderful I have been 3x. Love the group of seven. I like the variety of artists they display. The grounds are beautiful, hiking trails are lovely. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Only negative comment would be the cafe. I would give it 1star. I have tried it each time and they are under staffed. First time I waited half an hr just for coffee. Most recently we sat and waited for an hour for a cobb salad. The chicken was literally cold crumbles of "grilled chicken" for $18 and was appetizer sized. Was insanely over priced. If it says grilled, should be hot chicken. I was still hungry. From what I could tell, small portions and not worth it. Coffee was delicious though.
Wonderful Arts and Exhibits. So proud to witness history of our Canadian Artist!
Exceptional experience in every way. Highly recommended for Canadian art lovers. Rotating exhibits and new offerings make this a special place to visit!
Don't just come here for the Canadian art, enjoy the beautiful grounds as well. Here's what to see on the grounds: Tom Thompson's Shack, the Cemetery, and the Sculpture Garden.
We brought my 99 year old grandmother to the McMichael gallery and she had the best time! The incredible selection of paintings are beautiful, with many Canadian artists represented. The food at the cafe was very good, with interesting and delicious choices. The grounds are gorgeous, with walking paths and sculptures among the trees.
Love the Gallery and even better the views/ vista's from within. Amazing structure. The field stone foundation. The old timbers. If those logs could only talk....they would have some great stories!
Great place to visit
Great Group of Seven exhibit. Wonderful grounds and hiking trails.
Always nice inside and outside ! There is always a new group of seven painting I notice at every visit!! Loved seeing the magic of Christmas getting setup !!
Wonderful exhibit of Maud Lewis paintings. Many other great exhibits and a trail with outdoor sculptures. And a cafe with a delicious lunch menu and desserts.
We went to see the David Milne exhibit as well as other artists. We took an organized tour which helped with interpretation. Well worth a visit.
Walking here makes me feel happy and relaxed. The restaurant in this museum can rest if I am tired. There are many wonderful works in the museum, and many people are drawing around the museum.
Lovely exhibits with friendly tour guide and gorgeous property to walk around on in the summer. Plus, lots of Poké-Stops, if you're into that kind of thing.
Good trails with ample parking space. There was a wedding event when I visited. Parking is not free - $7 per vehicle (in October), can't say about winters. One trail was closed as bridge work is going on (in Oct 2019) Looks like it will remain closed for a long time.. May be summer 2020
I enjoyed a sculpture park even more than the gallery itself, beautiful place, worth to visit!
One of my favourite places of the Toronto area. Always something new to discover, especially concerning First Nations or Inuit art. The Group of Seven paintings are some of the best with the ones at the AGO. The surroundings with the forest, the big boulders, the sculptures in the park are very soothing either in summer or during the colder months. Nice gift shop, affordable cafeteria and friendly staff. Unique!
Always enjoy this art gallery. They manage to keep their collection feeling fresh by rotating it.
Beautiful location outside and exhibitions inside. Cafe/restaurant very good as well. Worth a visit to see all the great art and take in the surrounding scenery. Check out Village of Kleinburg while you're there. Cafe's shops and pretty side streets.
Great opportunity to see many of the Group of Seven artists on display. I love the space and grounds. They regularly have special exhibits or artists featured in many of the galleries. Primarily focused on Canadian artists. Very nice food service on site to round out your visit.
It's a beautiful property. Viewing the lovely depths of the surrounding forest was almost as lovely as viewing the artwork! Great outdoor installations.
Peaceful, lot of foliage, spacious and serene
Beautiful surroundings of tall trees. Some galleries were closed so it didn't seem like an extensive collection this visit, but it's a great environment for a contemplative day away. Parking is $7... Surprised you had to pay given this is so out of town.
Wonderful gallery. The grounds themselves are worth the visit. Maud Lewis exhibit is so much fun. The kind of exhibit that kids and adults will enjoy. Group of Seven paintings are very compelling as well.
Wonderful place to visit, history in itself is unbelievable. First time and we enjoyed it immensely.
Nice place for chilling and trekking with friends and family, river, hills, can play with pets, cycling and many more activities.
Great gallery of Canadian art with a tranquil setting.
McMichael is a Canadian Art Gallery surrounded by trails. There are about 4 trails in total. Come here every Saturday to drop my son off to Saturday art class. Because I come from far I don’t wanna leave the place, so I enjoyed the scenery here. Fully recommend this place.
It was too long to be away, what a great experience. Ha e to remember to return more often
Excellent staff and gallery set up. A great day to spend indoors or outdoors! A great variety of genres for all art lovers.
Amazing gallery and a short walk to Kleinburg which is a beautiful, picturesque town.
Nice location, beautiful grounds. The gallery exhibits change all the time, but I wasn't impressed overall with what was available when I visited. One gallery smelled horrible, I'm not sure if it was dirty diaper or some kind of plumbing issue. Also note the main gallery was closed for construction I went. Parking is $7, which I thought was ridiculous, as there is a public school next to it and in summer or weekends would be an easy walk instead. Overall for the price there are other museums/galleries that would be much more value.
Always a nice outdoor place for a casual walk. The history and McMichael collection is interesting.
Beautiful gallery and grounds! Vegan options at the cafe. Perfect way to spend the afternoon. A Canadian classic!
I love this gallery. Some very important Group of Seven pieces here. All in a beautiful setting.
Beautifully kept park, wonderful staff and well thought out activities for the children. All in all a beautiful afternoon making memories with the family. Thank you!
Beautiful grounds. They do charge for parking ($7) and entrance fee to the gallery ($18 for adults) with options for family plans and child along with student rates. Slightly less expensive on Tuesdays.
Excellent collection of Canadian and Indigenous art. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Great hands on activities. The grounds were lovely, especially in the fall.
Beautiful place, so relaxing. I went to see the Maud Lewis exhibit, which was wonderful. All the other works were very interesting as well. You really get the feel of Canadian art and landscape. Outside grounds are beautiful with sculptures and nature trails. And they have a restaurant inside. I didn’t eat there, but bought a coffee to go, and it was good. Next time will try their food.
The surrounding park is beautifu a spor spend the day, have a picnic and walk the grounds at once your visit to the Gallery
Haven't been in 30 years, but they do full rotation of all their collection, and they have several exhibits going. It was totally fresh for me and we all loved it.
Beautiful location. The gallery is accessible and flows through in a nice way.
Surprised that there wasn't more Group of Seven work here. AGO has way more. Klienburg setting is lovely. Would have liked to see the inside on Tom Thompson's house (not just the outside.) I found some of the exhibits too dark (lighting to low--strained my eyes), and some lighting casts a shadow from the frame onto the work. Really poor service in the restaurant considering the price. Food was good though.
Wonderful art gallery near Toronto. The Uninvited exhibition curated by Sarah Milroy was one of the best exhibitions I’ve seen in a long time and a great contribution to Canadian art and art history. Be aware that parking is $7.
Very interesting and varied exhibitions. Great for lovers of Canadian art.
Come inspired by Maud Lewis and Lionel FitzGerald at McMichael, one of Canada’s most essential valuable art collections dedicated to the development of the country’s art. The serene walking trails around the gallery are a must-visit to compliment the overall experience.
A beautiful setting that helps you appreciate the natural splendor that inspired many of the works in the collection. This is my favorite art collection in Canada simply because it is dedicated to the works of Canadian artists. In the summer take in a walk on the trails that connect to the conservation, or enjoy the sculpture garden. In the winter gaze out on the trees and imagine the dream of spring to come.
Unbelievable setting, great galleries. Wonderful restaurant - make a reservation so you can get a table near the window.
Nice museum but unrivalled by the outdoor exhibits and hiking trails. Would definitely come back just to explore the grounds.
Located in Kleinburg, Ontario, art collection of famous Canadian artists. Many examples of sculptures and paintings.
The McMichael Gallery is a wonderful place to spend a few hours on a blustery, rainy day. Their extensive collections of paintings from: Group of Seven artists, Indigenous artist Norval Morriseau, and current exhibit of John Hartman works - makes it well worth the trip.
Great Gallery. Great location! Fantastic grounds! Do not miss the trails in the valley! Check the interesting sculpture garden!
Not enough time! Wish we had arrived earlier (closes at 5) because the galleries, the shop and the grounds are all beautiful and worthy of lingering.
So disappointed. My husband and I went to see examples of the famous Group of Seven and Tom Thompson art but hardly any was on display. 4 galleries were closed and 4 galleries were devoted to Lawren Harris, mostly in his Abstract period. There were also 2 galleries of Inuit art; that was 10 out of the 14 available galleries. We only saw a couple of paintings done by each of the Group's artists. Since the Collection's reputation is built around the Group of Seven and Tom Thompson, we really expected more from our visit. Also, the website content does not accurately reflect the actual content of the galleries; it seems to imply much more of a Group of Seven/Tom Thompson content in your galleries. I'd give you zero stars if I had been allowed to.
Great spot. Beautiful grounds. The group of seven collection is amazing !! Highly recommended. The town of Kleinberg leaves something to be desired. Not much there.
It is an amazing place for those who like the Group of Seven works. It's also a great place for nature walks.
Beautiful art gallery in a beautiful location. We had a great time. The only downside is that we actually had trouble finding the main building as it was a ways away from the parking lot.
As always an excellent collection of the group of seven. Gift shop has lots of things in it that I Canadian and some good Indian art pieces. The cafe is good for small meals and desserts are very good. Lots of trails 2 walkthrough. They have changed Tom Thompson's Shaq into a meeting area so it has lost its ruggedness and authenticity. Still great place to come and spend the entire day.
Really lovely venue despite the rain and the Maud Lewis exhibit is sure to lift your spirits must come back in more Clement weather to enjoy the gardens.
All the negative reviews on here stating there aren't enough Group of Seven paintings at this gallery are incredibly misleading. As of today's date I'd say the gallery consists of 90-95% Group of Seven paintings. It is an absolute treasure to visit and I highly recommend it to anyone.
Great place for art lovers. Peaceful area around it for hiking
Love this place! I usually go with my kids for a walk in trails, very nice specially in summer and fall. And I have visited the gallery, very nice collection of arts, really enjoyed it! They also have nice cafe to drop by and get your coffee/desserts. Recommended for everyone
Amazing art by Canadian artists and a beautiful trail with amazing views
Came here to walk my dog, amazing trails over 100 acres
"To love nature was to worship freedom. To believe in nature was to rebel." - Henry David Thoreau Group of seven and two associated icons, Tom Thomson and Emily Carr, created something remarkable that become Canadian image around the world. This small heritage village harbours one of the largest collection of Canadian art.
Even the driveway to the gallery is gorgeous. It is nestled in beautiful Kleinberg and surrounded by natural beauty all around.
I was expecting to see more finished paintings by Group of Seven. It seems like AGO has more. Otherwise a cozy pleasant museum.
Wonderful walking trails and a fantastic collection of group of seven paintings. Not a lot of info on each individual piece unless you have a guide to tell you
Saw four great exhibits which was exhausting but worthwhile. Then refreshed with a short outside walk through the sculpture garden.
We went and didn't have the chance to see half the things we wanted to. Make sure to leave yourself a bunch of time if you want to admire the work all the way through. A lot of art from contenporary Canadian artists and tons of group of seven work. Would recommend whole-heartedly.
Pretty amazing structures at the end of a great walk/hiking trail. Haven't made it in yet due to covid.
Nice collection of historic Canadian art
Amazing Trails and a beautiful location! met a lot of friendly people on the trails. Great for a short walk, not long distance. :) A little bit muddy right now in March.
So beautifully done. The collection of Group of 7 art is so pretty and interesting. Nice parkland area for walking and admiring the sculpture garden. Cafe had a really delicious lunch
Visited with cousins, was impressed with the collection which focused on "The Seven" who are Canadian impressionists. Beautiful.
Beautiful grounds, stunning and unique artwork and very well organized and laid out.
We really love this gallery. I enjoy it more than the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) as it is not as busy. I also like the focus on Canadian artists. A membership is worth it and inexpensive.
Lovely place. Was there for a wedding. The place is well organized, beautiful all around, and full of character! The staff is extremely helpful and friendly!
A staple art gallery that showcases indigenous art from the past century. A must see if traveling in the area.
Cultural center that keeps out Canadian heritage alive and well. A beautiful outing with my family. Gorgeous well kept grounds for a hike it outdoor picnic.
Absolutely awesome. The Kim Dorland painting stopped me in my tracks. Karine Giboulo's work is hard-hitting social commenting using miniature sculptures. These are great choices, important works of art that have something to say, and speak clearly.
Enjoyed the Maud Lewis exhibit!!????
A wonderful environment to acquire a taste of Canadian fine art - or broaden your existing knowledge. The art exhibits are wonderful reflections of Canada and Canadian culture. The gift shop is small, but complete. I did not sample the cafeteria, but it was full at noon. The grounds are worth a walk to enjoy a taste of nature. Parking was tight at 11 am. Well worth the visit.
Beautiful place inside and out. Worth checking out the cafe inside as well. They have lockers inside and they took AMEX. Parking when we went on the Saturday was $7 per vehicle
Beautiful trail for an afternoon walk. The parking you will need to pay. There is an art museum and cafe there as well.
Incredible space and beautiful art with a strong Canadian focus. Numerous chairs and giant windows throughout the gallery invite you to contemplate the beauty of the landscape in all seasons, as the Group of Seven would have done.
Great place to visit. They have a good collection of Canadian art from the group of seven and other native artists. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit here. Now some observations. The lighting in some of the areas is so dim that I literally had to go within a foot of the art work to see it. Which also brings up a good point - you can walk right up to the paintings and see the brush strokes and colours up close because they are not cordoned off to the public. Due to the small venue, don't be surprised if you have to weave through some crowds when it gets busy. I went on a Saturday and it was fairly busy so I had to wait several minutes to look at some of the paintings that caught my eye. Most of the paintings are small enough that when two people are admiring it there is not enough room for you to get a good look due to space restrictions and the dim lighting. Not a deal breaker but an annoyance nonetheless. In summary, I would recommend this place if you are looking for something different to do near the GTA. One more thing - the cost of two adults is the same as a family of four (if the kids are 18 and under) so bring your kids.
Always worth the drive to Kleinburg! Beautiful grounds, outstanding permanent collections of Canadian (mostly Group of 7) art, and small enough to take in the whole gallery in one visit.
Love this place! Have been a member for years. Great exhibits and fantastic display and story of Group of Seven. And Kleinburg is a lovely village to visit afterwards. Great shops and cafes. A great Sunday outing.
Lovely setting for a lovely museum.
Wonderful if you are a fan of the group of seven. The native American art on the upper levels (when I was there) was also astounding. Hope I can visit here again
Beautiful art gallery showcasing paintings of the Group of Seven and other Canadian artists. The Gallery is located in a very picturesque town of Kleinburg. Plan at least 6 hours to see both - the gallery, the town and the park.
A comprehensive permanent collection of the renowned Group of 7, insightful temporary exhibitions presenting emerging artists and bringing new views of modern collections are running as well (can be visited with the same ticket). All presented in a neat curatorial setting and within a great architectural interior space. The space outside of the museum is very large and includes trails, nice landscape for walks.
This is a small gallery nestled into beautiful wooded area. Lots of great things to see both inside and outside the gallery. The cafe would not be a great choice to feed children based on the options I saw but all of the food was great.
The McMichael gallery has always been a hidden gem for me. Just outside the city in Kleinburg, you’ll find an entire days adventure in the museum and on the grounds of Ojibwe Anishinaabe people. It’s breathtaking. I arrived an hour before closing on this date and found it was not enough time for my guest to take it all in. There was only one persons selling tickets when we arrived and without exaggeration we waited for over 10mins with a line of 6 people behind us. Although I knew the customer service has always been lacking here, I wished she could have acknowledged us, said I’m just selling/explaining a membership, I’ll only be a few more mins, or let me call a colleague to assist you. I had enough time to walk over to the gift shop stand in line and try and buy tickets over there. Unfortunately, they only sell tickets for advance dates and told me to go back to the front desk. We were next in line and I requested 2 adult tickets and an audio guide for my friends first time. She slid the tickets on the counter and said “there’s no audio guide today” and called for the next in line. I still don’t know why it wasn’t available that day. Anyway, parking is $7. Adult entry is $18, buy your tickets online so you won’t have a similar issue. The museum is on a 100 acres on ground so wear comfortable shoes if you plan on hiking the trails and perhaps a clean pair of shoes if you do the museum last. The McMichael is a fraction of the size of the ROM or AGO but is laid out in a way that feels so grand. They have so many hidden seating areas you could sit for hours taking in the pieces.
Great art focused centre located in nature. New Restaurant is very decent with a wide offering of original local flavored dishes and decent wines. The Maud Lewis exhibit we attended was extremely comprehensive. We had a great time.
Today is 2021.5.23. During the epidemic, there were a lot of people in the city center and the lake. Our family drove to the Vaughan Art Gallery Park in York District. There is a small town next to it. I didn’t expect this park to be so beautiful and there are so many towering trees. It is simply a forest park, the trails in the park are quiet and intoxicating! There are many art statues inside, with different expressions, which are worth admiring. Unfortunately, the Fine Arts Museum has not opened due to the epidemic, so I will visit again after preparing for the epidemic!
Very nice grounds to walk and trails. Parking is $7.
Every Canadian should come here! The most beautiful Canadian art lives here! And its also in the middle of the forest, just incredible!
Part of our Canadian heritage is preserved here with most members of the group of seven have been burried on the site and some related items are available to see.
A must-see destination at least a few times a year. Wonderful exhibition buildings and grounds.
Fantastic exhibits on now (Aug 14/17). Beautiful grounds. Parking ($7) and admisison ($18) a bit pricey for a small gallery but the amazing art and beautiful building are worth it.
Last time I visited it there were more ivory arts from inuits. Now there are paintings by Canadian authors, but, honestly, not my taste. The museum is small, you can walk through it in 1 hour. The park around is amazingly big and wild.
Beautiful gallery surrounded by woods with impressive collection of Canadian art - Group of Seven & Indigenous in particular. Also has rotating shows of significant Canadian artists. It has a very nice giftshop as well.A wonderful day outing from Toronto & nearby.
Artworks with long walking pathways are not bad. very different
An interesting place, quite quiet at most times during summer, and probably filled with classes during the school year. Not much grabbing you other than the beautiful Canadian art, which is to be expected. But, if you're expecting anything more than an art gallery, you will most likely leave a little disappointed. It does however have a couple of hiking trails that people frequent. Food is expensive, and the local town of Klienburg is quite an expensive place, with not too many food options. So perhaps plan a meal beforehand, or pack a lunch for a picnic in the beautiful Canadian outdoors just outside the gallery.
Just stunning inside and out. So many trails and beauty in the natural wilderness and the art is classic Canadian and modern diverse voices. Worth every penny.
Great place to get to know some Canadian art! Plus amazing property to just go for a walk!
Beautiful place... nice scenery and sculptures Good for long walks...
Varied collection. Loved the building design with huge view windows onto the trees just like paintings.
The McMichael Gallery is a real jewel. They always have interesting exhibitions. The latest, featuring Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris was fantastic. Considering his famous landscape paintings were just at the AGO I think it was a bold step to show his abstracts in the same year. I have to say that I loved both shows, but felt more engaged with the McMichael show. His pieces in this style really speak to me. I'll be back.
Beautiful grounds! Beautiful gallery, visited on Canada day long weekend and a great choice. Had a lovely picnic outside in the well maintained grounds. The art gallery was well planned and although we missed the tour we were able to make our way around. Some of the staff were a little over zealous with their policing, I am aware the rules of a gallery are there in order to protect the works, however, I did notice a few people being wagged at by some of the older ladies on the staffing teams. I suppose they do have a job just seemed a little loud and rude, chill out loves. Lovely little gift shop, lots of cool artsy items to spend your $$ on.
Accessible. A wonderful way to spend a day outdoors, hiking the trails, immersed in Canadian art. Excellent value.
Asked one staff member about where Emily Carr's paintings were and she said " I don't think we have any of her paintings at the moment ". A few minutes later, we found a room full of her paintings!!! Staff needs to be more informed about the place in which they work!!!
An eternal favourite that reminds me of our great Canadian artists.
Group of seven collection, always discover something new in the works of these exceptional artists.
We love to come here not only to take in all the art but to relax, to enjoy the quiet. This place is tranquil unlike busy and noisy galleries of Toronto. This year we bought membership and will enjoy it even more.
Based on the collection of Mr. and Mrs. McMichael, the museum has a large collection of works by Canadian artists. The Group of Seven collection is particularly impressive, and is a place you should visit at least once. The facility is a park, and you can enjoy just taking a walk!
Love the beautiful scenery and trails. Exhibits are hit and miss. Worth the season's pass if you're planning a couple trips
Nice place for a walk especially in the fall with all the falling leaves of multiple colours. You can also explore the different art pieces for free in the walking trails.
I went there as a student for a field trip for the last day. This is not where you want go as your last day trip. Very boring. I am giving four stars for the maintenue and teaching. Please make it more fun for kids!
If you love art and want to learn more about it this place is great for that. Also nice scenic trails
Although the site, gallery and exhibitions are beautiful, I don't like how they say it features indigenous art when it is merely used to serve the white narrative. They can do better.
Truly amazing collection of art. Completely blown away by building, its setting in nature, and the content. Cannot reccomend more.
My husband and I visted the gallery yesterday. We hadn’t been there for over 20 years. I was a young adult kid who didn’t appreciate it as much as I did yesterday. The service was so good that I felt I was at home. We took our time and really immersed ourselves to appreciate the legacy the artists have left. You will need at least 2 1/2 hours to view everything. We didn’t visit the restaurant or gift shop as we just came for the art. I have to give a shout out to the impeccable service by one of the ladies that works there. Too bad I didn’t ask for her name. She took a extra care of us after we told her about my eye condition and provided accommodations for me so that I can see the art better. I could go and on about how absolutely lovely the experience was.
Its always good to view these timeless pieces, and hike around this beautiful area
Classic Canadian art.. Everyone should revisit this place
Can’t miss this museum if you are in the area. Amazing art selection from Canada’s finest artists. Could spend all day taking in these masterpieces.
Amazing place for the whole family
If you love Canadiana and art this is one of the best places to go to view beautiful landscapes done by some of Canada's greatest artists.
Beautiful gallery with relevant exhibitions. Good cafe and pretty grounds.
Amazing uniquely Canadian Art and setting.
If you're interested in Canadian Art, the McMichael Gallery is a must see. They feature a permanent collection of famous Canadian artists such as the Group of Seven. Another reason to go is the area around the gallery is absolutely stunning. I'd recommend going on a warm day and taking a hike through the trails.
A truly unique place where the grounds and buildings themselves resonate with being Canadian as much as the beautiful works of art houses within. A peaceful oasis of green space surrounded by the rapidly expanding suburbs . A great place to visit for art lovers and the uninitiated alike.
Loved the Maud Lewis and other exhibits. Just wish they had repros of more of her art.
Beautiful gallery, and amazing permanent and traveling art. An amazing collection of Canadian art. The grounds is also vast and stunning - make sure you have time to wander around outdoors and indoors!
We thoroughly enjoyed the visit. The gallery is well set up for viewing, and the grounds themselves are beautiful and well kept.
Charged parking but only accessible by cars. The curated path was punctuated then got confrontingly questioned where I was going after I followed the directed detour. Perhaps because I refused membership right when paying for admission but I do not regret. I found the visit was lean in content and tinted with unnecessary interaction. But everything outside the admission is great. The building is nice. The trees and the walking path is calming and family friendly.
Stunning #sizematters exhibition
The Maud Lewis art exhibition at McMichael was impressive and touching.
New Fitzgerald show expansive. Grounds gorgeous! Last day of Art sale today. Go!
This is one of my favorite galleries. Every time my husband and I come to Toronto for Christmas holidays, we visit McMichaels. The quality of the exhibits are amazing, they are very well curated. We learn something new every visit. The gift shop is great for buying meaningful and beautiful gifts. I recommend this gallery to everyone whenever I have a chance.
Such an amazing spot nestled away in the woods! Can't wait to get married here in a few years!
absolutely breathtaking private art collections as well as views of woodlands surrounding the museum
Great collection of Canadian artists despite some galleries were closed during our visit due to the event. The ridiculous thing is paid parking in this middle of nowhere, you should pay $7 (if you don't have cash to pay on the spot, you can do it at the reception) in addition to admission pricing. Garden with Ivan Eyre sculptures is not worth visiting, you should focus on what's inside
This place is always such a great to go to. Incredible art and the exhibits are always so different.
Amazing, unique gallery featuring group of seven and so many more Canadian artists. They have a very large collection and regularly bring in interesting exhibits as well. Absolutely gorgeous setting for this rustic-looking gallery. Interesting history as well... yours to discover. It's worth the drive to Kleinburg.
The arts inside and the proximity to nature makes it a great outing for all ages. Must see!
Love walking the grounds and seeing all the sculptures. My favourite part is their extensive collection of the Group of Seven artists they have on display!
Fabulous experience. Beautiful gallery and surroundings. Highly recommended. However the cafe is extremely expensive! Was shocked when we got our lunch bill.
The group of seven 100th anniversary show was spectacular, and so was the "uninvited " show. Both are a must see. Take the time to go for a walk on the grounds, it's beautiful!
Atmospheric place...beautiful grounds as well...only downside, on a hot day, lower level of the 3 level building is very uncomfortable...sauna like.
I liked this place a lot. An interesting art gallery surrounded by forest. Very good collection of the Group of Seven paintings, a lot of Inuit art. It was a bit strange to find some rooms devoted to hip-hop culture. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There is a good gift shop with reasonable prices. I didn’t like the outside garden with sculptures much.
McMichael Art Gallery is a truly inspiring place for artists and art lovers. I highly recommend visiting!
We spent 2 hours at the museum, but could easily have spent more time. We saw mostly landscapes by the Group of Seven. We had only a little time for a special exhibit of an Aboriginal artist. In warmer weather, I enjoy walking around the grounds
The grounds are tranquil and stunning. In the middle of nature, and then the Gallery! Excellent permanent exhibition, and the Maude Lewis exhibit was absolutely fantastic. Love this place.
One of my favourite galleries in Ontario. Their exhibitions for summer 2018 are well chosen and will appeal to a wide range of visitors. Most surprising might be the show of Toronto hip hop culture that will appeal to those with an appreciation of modern culture in the making. The indigenous art show is strong and helps redefine Canada's views of which artists deserve top billing. For Group of Seven fans, the J.E.H. MacDonald show is enthralling with details of his specific paint brands, his pocket sketch book, scientific analyses of his paint surfaces and of course the gorgeous art itself. Don't miss the wall of exquisite Thomson sketch paintings in the Director's show.
Always an awesome visit, inside and outside. I love the walking trails, sculpture park and the big window views of the very picturesque trees and valley below.
McMichael Art Gallery is really an enriching experience. Starting with the art itself, the history of art on display is fantastic, not to mention modern twists on occasion. Also, I really enjoy the different specialty days like the Christmas event. Overall I really enjoy McMichael and what it has to offer. There really isn't too many areas where we can enjoy the environment nestled in a big city!!!
This is a beautiful gallery with a wonderful permanent collection from the Group of Seven and Norval Morrisseau, as well as temporary exhibitions from aboriginal and contemporary Canadian artists. It is in a gorgeous setting surrounded by trees and a sculpture garden. Highly recommend a visit!
Beautiful spot for photos and nature walks, it has an expansive area to explore and excellent and friendly staff for any events you may have. Check it out!
The gallery is not large, but the setting is beautiful, with paths that link to a network of walking trails.
Wonderful wonderful gallery!
Great Canadian Artists collection.
beautiful place, it is my pleasure to drive. Many interesting places to see
Beautiful location, always pleasure to visit. The exhibits are informative and provide new perspectives on indigenous, group of seven and other artists.
Great place for a more relaxed-pace hike/walk. Very clearly marked paths, and there's the option to extend your hike into connecting trails. Lots of folks come here to jog, bike, and walk their dogs. Free parking, and no admission fees to hike here. No outhouses, but the gallery area does have public washrooms (I'm just not sure if there needs to be an even happening for these to be open).
Some of the best exhibits in the Country are here and the grounds are beautiful.
A very good gallery in a wonderful setting. Disappointed not to see more of the Group of 7 and Tom Thompson. Brilliant exhibitions.
After touring the exhibits at the McMicheal Art Gallery in Kleinberg, On we had worked up an appetite. I was expecting a quick buffet type eatery but was pleasantly surprised by sit down and be served bistro called Aura. Great menu for lunch ranging from lobster roll with salad to sandwich of the day (a beautiful meaty and moist burger on my day with kettle chips). My friend had a flat bread topped with goat cheese, red peppers, tomato and olive oil. There is wine and beer and very good coffee. The young Wait staff are all polite and dressed in black bottoms with white blouse/shirt. I had not been out there for a few decades and always had to eat at a resto in town in previous years. A lovely place for a day outing from Toronto.
I recently took a visitor from the UK to see the Group of Seven art at the Gallery. I was shocked & very disappointed to discover that most of their art was not on display. When I asked "why", I was told that some of it was "on loan" to a gallery in Ottawa, while another set of paintings was "travelling". I would NOT have taken my visitor to the McMichael if I had known this ahead of time. I have regularly visited the gallery but I will now hesitate to return again.
One of the beautiful location for the display the Group of Seven collection. Do not forget to check the local restaurant
I really enjoyed the Everything Remains Raw exhibit!
I loved seeing the beautiful art in the art gallery, will be back more to explore the land! 10/10
Nice selection of unique Canadian art, friendly staff. I just wish parking was included ($7.00) since you are already paying admission and it's not exactly reachable with public transit.
Close friends wedding. Staff and grounds were amazing. 10/10 would wander around again.
Great art exhibition. This show focused on female artists who at their height were never invited to exhibit with the men. Later I had a lovely lunch at the McMichael restaurant.
A beautiful location to visit, learn and share art and nature with the entire family. The grounds are unexpectedly massive to roam. Must visit!
This is my favourite place, I went there with kids and they enjoyed a lot, it’s clean and quite , different than the other parks around, the restaurant view is amazing.
The Group of Seven art is amazing. The trail surrounding the gallery is quite beautiful. Relaxing way to spend the day.
Just wonderful place to spend a day of any season. Art and nature all together can not be better.
One of the most beautiful Canadian art heritage sites in the country.
Wonderful location. Beautiful galleries. Great collection of important Canadian art.
Beautiful collection of Canadian art in a stunning setting. The surrounding forestry is wonderfully displayed throughout the exhibits. The buildings themselves are well designed and are a pleasure to walk through. Excellent art curation and special exhibits.
great place for a walk and the gallery has a beautiful work. the staff is very helpful, knowledgeable, and do not hassle you for mask exemptions.
Very disappointed about a couple of staff... should provide world class service and be respectful to clients. I witnessed someone being mistreated; no one deserves such treatment
One of the best galleries in Toronto. A must visit and learn about the Group of 7. Not to mention the expos, hiking trials, sculptures and events. During Covid times the gallery is performing so well. Check the regulations before you visit.
Good selection of Canadian arts. Outdoor garden is beautiful
Snobbish staff, closed galleries on the busiest day, and an overall holier then thou atmosphere. The building and grounds are pretty though!
Always outstanding collections in a family friendly setting. Wonderful for picnics. This time is lovely when the leaves are turning on the amazing, very walkable trails around the museum.
My favourite art gallery in Canada. Small but perfect. There are walking trails into the valley behind the building that are worth taking during your visit.
Absolutely loved it! Unbelievable, that only 10% of the collection is on display.
Today, I had the pleasure of visiting the McMichael Canadian Art Collection with my wife and two old friends. Getting in and parking was a breeze. The admissions folks were super helpful and the encounters we had with staff were fine. This is a group that knows how to deal with dumb tourists, AKA me, which was nice. After walking around the various galleries we had a look in the gift shop then it was time for lunch. The food was fresh and good. One point I should mention here, depending upon the time of day the item you want to order may be sold out to have a plan B. Lunch done, we went outside to explore the grounds. The grounds are in perfect condition with various artworks scattered around. Sooner than I would have liked, it was time to hit the road. The day at McMichael was a great experience even for me, an admitted cultural infidel. If I liked it, I'm sure that you will too.
Stunning, mesmerizing, phenomenal experience! The best artwork is the building itself, just an all around moving, enriching experience
I love art and McMichael is a wonderful place to see Canadian artists. Beautiful grounds with the sculpture garden and great collection of art by Group of Seven. I visit it at least once a year and never been disappointed - always a rewarding experience.
very beautiful and cozy place. the park is just wonderful. The museum has collected a good collection of works by Canadian artists. I wish you success.
Large collection of Canadian Art in an oversized wood cabin on beautiful grounds with sculptures.
Such a large space it never feels crowded.
Very nice gallery with Canadian and nature focused pieces, and excellent location for nature walks
A great place to stroll among some masterpieces of art
Best place for a Sunday walk.
Always a great place to visit. Outside the noise of the city you feel the experience of the group of seven. But too limited in paintings to see and way too expensive.
My 1st visit and I can truly say that the grounds are spectacular. The art is great but most of it is not what I typically gravitate towards. Lunch was a treat and very surprised at the quality of the food. What a great way to spend 1/2 day walking the grounds, see some art and grab a bite.
McMichael is a great gallery on some beautiful land. You can walk outside and see the sculpture gardens, walk the Humber trail, and there are a few spots to sit, break out a sandwich, and enjoy the weather. The exhibits inside are very interesting; lots of Canadian art and they have interesting artists that they showcase often. I come here quite often!
Love the food. The windows are like picture frame.
Gallery is main feature with excellent facilities, environment and activities but the surrounding grounds and trails are a hidden gem in the GTA. Accessible from nearby bindertwine park.
Beautiful indoor outdoor gallery. The natural forest landscape perfectly compliments the Canadian landscape works
Wonderful grounds and always interesting exhibits featuring Canadian artists.
Beautiful place for art and nature lovers
Beautiful building and the exhibit was very well curated staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the food was excellent! It is also a great place to walk your dog.
The McMichael is singularly focused on Canadian Art, with excellent Group of Seven and Indigenous holdings and a growing collection of 20th Century and Contemporary works. These are supplemented by worthwhile, often retrospective temporary exhibitions and a sculpture garden in a beautiful natural setting that connects to walking trails in the nearby valley.
Been here a number of times but last visit was best. Great curating of the Group of Seven with individual spaces and short blurb for each member. Book store could use a short history of the group of seven; just to provide a broader and deeper historical context to go away with.
Fantastic art collection of Tom Thompson. Loves the township of Kleinberg as well.
This museum is really beautiful. It really highlights Canadian artists and I especially like the aboriginal art section. The most interesting section I found was the microbial art. That was really cool to see art made from microbes. I had no idea something like that was around. Overall highly recommend checking out if you love art!
The art collection is great. The cemetery is really in bad shape. It is almost impossible to read the names from the tombstones! If there are 6 great Canadian artists and we are proud of them then the names should be readable!
If you think visiting an art museum should be a time for respecting the craft of art, nature, in a tranquil atmosphere, this museum does that. Having been to many before, this is easily my favourite. If you have never been to an art museum, go here, and ask when the next tour begins. You don't need to follow the tour all the way through - it's pretty normal to depart or join mid-way, but they are short and very informative. Very digestible, which is not something I could say for many other tours. It is primarily the group of seven, and the collector has an obvious passion and connection to the spirit of the art: nature. You'll see windows exposing the surrounding nature outside, and you're invited to go on the walk to enjoy the inspiring area too, the same that inspired the artists. And you should! I'd like to think the original artists would be very proud of the staff here.
Great exhibit on Canadian Women Artists, in addition to everything else.
Stunning collection of aboriginal art and famous landscape paintings
Wonderful collection amidst a relaxing and natural setting Was disappointed that they were not checking and confirming vaccination status
Hardly worth the trip poorly curated. It strayed away from group of seven theme , first time going there was hoping see mass collection group of seven, oddly they showcased large rooms to guitars claiming it was related to tom thomson and some unknown acrylic artist. There where allot of bare walls and I was hoping be more interesting art and allot of group of seven paintings as they claim to have the largest Canadian collection. Rude staff who wouldn't allow you to take pictures of the paintings and kept following me around, also claiming it would steal natives souls and didn't want you take any pictures of what they had/claim where group of seven and or questioned mark oddly. painted opinion which raised suspicion . Hardly worth entry fee $15 dollars, I suggest to anyone going for group of seven to visit the AGO Museum as you will have greater time and see more art work and more selective. artist. The only thing that was worth this trip was going outside for a nature walk.
Membership is a bargain for retirees; it’s a great meeting place or destination; with lots to see and learn. The lunch is lovely with exceptional service.
Beautiful building, inspiring landscape and a wonderful collection! We love this place.
Beautifully situated grounds and art gallery, with some great art on display. Membership is reasonable. $90 for an annual season family pass.
I have loved going since I was a kid. The gallery is in a beautiful location, the nature walk is just as enjoyable as the art.
It's got great art. They put on really good shows. It's a bit of a bear to get to without a car.
Beautiful day at McMichael Gallery
Stunning and inspiring Canadian art. Even if you don't want to go in the gallery, the grounds are full of sculptures and beautiful trails. Great place for a picnic, a day inside exploring artwork, or both.
It's a unique museum, since there are only Canadian art pieces in there. All the art work there is beautiful and the outside of the museum is very maintained. Just note that it is a smaller museum.
What a peaceful and beautiful place
I ran a photography camp there for March break and it was great to see that the staff there were all about making the experience for the kids the best it could be! I cant wait to be back for the August photography summer camps! I didn't have a telephoto lens but the kids and I saw this otter on our walkabout.
Great place to see Canadian art. The group of Seven. Indigenous art. Walk the grounds for sculptures.
We chose McMichael art gallery out of 4 choices we had visited. It was definitely the atmosphere that caught us and we knew it was perfect for us. We wanted something different. Not just another wedding hall cookie cutter wedding. We wanted it to me small, sweet, beautiful and warm. And that is exactly what McMichael gave us. We worked with Angela & Danielle who were both amazing and very personable. They helped us throughout the whole time. From our first meet and greet to check out the place, to all the emails with multiple questions up until the day before the big day. We gave them our vision and they gave it to us. We had a smaller guest list of 75 which I find just perfect for the gallery. It was very beautifully decorated, and the staff was great. I would definitely recommend this venue for anyone’s wedding. Thank you Angela, Danille & the rest of the McMichael staff for a beautiful day.
It’s worth a visit. Really nice gallery, better than I expected. There’s one rude guard though so be extra careful to not go the wrong way.
Always loved this place. Very Canadian, inclusive. Learn so much about the first nations, inuit and group of seven and many new artists.
I have been to the gallery 3 or 4 times before and have always loved it and had I written a review then it would Have been 5 stars all the way. I went with a friend today that had never been there before. I had told this friend about the large collection of Group of Seven at the gallery. I was more than disappointed that many of the gallery's Group of Seven collection were not on display. We walked through the gallery and I said to my friend "that's weird ... where are all the Group of Seven?" I asked a guard and she said many of them were not on display but were in the "vault". Wow ... how sad ... that's what we came to see. And that's what I always expect to see at the gallery. I understand that there will be special exhibits .... but to clear Group of Seven out to make room for the "hip hop" exhibit? There were also 3 rooms devoted to David Milne. Can't say I cared much for his work. I went to see the Group of Seven peices and Tom Thompson peices. What saved the day was that there was an art sale on the day we went...October 21st. We walked through the art sale first and actually spent a lot time there and enjoyed speaking with the artists. So glad we did the art sale first as without the regular collection of Group of Seven on display the gallery was uninspiring. Had this art sale not been happening the day would have been a bust for me. If you are going specifically to see the Group of Seven collection that they have you'd best phone ahead to ensure they are not locked away in the vault as they were today. We loved the wolf figures outside as you walk up to the gallery.
It had been a number of years since going to the McMichael. It was the featured display of Uprising: The Power of Mother Earth Christi Belcourt—A Retrospective with Isaac Murdoch that brought me and family. The gallery was nicely spaced for visitors during the Pandemic and was fortunate to attend before the third wave stay at home order. We will come back when there are featured art we admire.
Gorgeous place!! I really enjoyed my visit and walk through the park. An excellent art collection. Highly recommended!!
Absolutely incredible collection of Group of Seven artwork!! So much to see, it was a pleasure to try to see it all. Friendly, knowledgeable staff to help with any questions. There are some quided tours that looked interesting.
Lovely and helpful staff. Beautiful grounds. Exquisite selection of artwork.
Amazing place! I like this gallery because you almost cannot see here the contemporary art))
Was the dj for a wedding here. Really nice space for an event staff is extremely accommodating and friendly.
Absolutely amazing place! Come for the art, stay for the trails. A real Canadian treasure
I hadn't been to the Gallery since I was a kid. I was happy to be able to get a couple tickets in for a viewing. The attendants were very knowledgeable and helpful. The grounds are well kept. I highly recommend going to view the works of the Group of Seven artists.
amazing and wonderful as usual. I love this museum and The seven specially Harrys
Great gallery...expensive tho. Nice to see iconic Canadian art in person????
How about taking a nice drive and enjoy nature. The gallery is nice, and if you get tired while walking through the gallery, they have very comfortable leather chairs.
With fond memories of the Group of Seven paintings, I made a long special family trip to the gallery to enjoy the beautiful paintings in the gallery collection. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I entered the first two galleries and found a few of the larger paintings of the Group of Seven with numerous small field paintings that the artists painted, when they went out to paint a scene. That was it. Where was the beautiful collection?. I moved on to the remainder of the galleries to find paintings that had nothing to do with the Group of Seven. I certainly was not interested in the rest of the galleries, focusing on women paintings, northern reflections and photography displays etc. If I had wanted to see those displays, I would have gone to specific galleries for that type of exhibition. I did not get my money's worth. It is a shame that the curators have downsized this treasure.. I used to visit this gallery on a regular basis, but I will now hesitate to return. I certainly would not take someone visiting this country to see Canada's Group of Seven .... I would be embarrassed at the poor showing.
An art hub with so many class pieces from world class artists.
Theyve really outdone themselves with renovations and making the place feel more modern while sticking to their original concept. Love the integration with its natural surrounding.
I love the place!:) especially the hilltop because we had our wedding there last year. ❤️ Afterwards, we were able to tour the gallery and see all the beautiful paintings. I will never forget that place:) Plus staff are knowledgeable and courteous. I definitely recommend this amazing place to everyone.
It's always a great walk at the McMichael. The grounds are well groomed and the trails are well kept. Inside you'll find great are. A must see and a gem of Kleinburg and Vaughan, ON
Amazing collection of indigenous and Canadian art, and a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. Lots of space to walk around outside, afterward, too.
This review isn't about the McMichael art gallery but more about the grounds around the McMichael art gallery. This is an excellent place to go for a walk anytime of the year. The trails go from the McMichael down through Major Mackenzie and then continued all the way down to Rutherford into Boyd Park.
A beautiful place which should not be missed if you are visiting greater Toronto. Excellent collection of paintings. Well maintained location and a stunning garden with some beautiful sculptures. Perfect place to be on warm day!
We first visited the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in the 1970s. The McMichaels had given their log house and their art collection to the Province of Ontario. It was our first introduction to the Group of Seven and we were seeing this art in a rustic, private home. What a wonderful growth. Now you turn off the highway on to a winding, treed lane before reaching the parking lot. You walk up a path past various sculptures and a Tom Thompson cabin before reaching the now much larger building complex. The original home is nicely integrated into the adjoining low-lying buildings. We had been looking forward to seeing the current Director's Cut exhibition which captured the Group of Seven heritage, a marvelous indigenous collection and some contemporary art pieces including punk art. Beyond the exhibitions, the gift shop was outstanding with wonderful momentos and very reasonable pricing. The entry foyer was very spacious and welcoming. We didn't have time to visit the cafeteria but we look forward to enjoying it on a future visit.
Came here this past Thursday for the first time. The gallery was very clean and nicely run by their members. Compared to bigger galleries such as the AGO, McMichael was much quieter but it definitely was just as nice. For $5 a ticket if you are under 25 and $7 for day parking, you can’t go wrong!
One of Canada's greatest cultural treasures. A must see attraction for both tourists and locals alike.
Perfect wedding venue ... Highly Recommend. From a very happy mother of the groom!! Lots of outdoor spaces, patio and a lovely hilltop ceremony spot. Wonderful indoor hall for dinner, packed with pure Canadian character! Lots of parking. Recommend securing the bridal suite for wedding party.
Great gallery with interesting exhibits, and a wonderful nature path surrounding it
Quite awesome park and beautiful trails , unfortunately due to covid , the art gallery is closed , but still its worth to go their to see it from outside ,
Great day. Walk the trail, lunch in the cafe, see the new exhibits, back to the gift shop and a coffee in the cafe.
A very nice collection of classic and iconic Canadian Art. The building itself is very nice and offers many nice vantage points overlooking the surrounding forrest for quiet contemplation. General Admission is $18/person but is worth it if you'd like to spend a few hours. Be sure to make use of their grounds as they have some walking trails and outdoor installations. Staff were friendly and helpful. A great way to escape the city.
Beautiful building with very interesting and we'll put together exhibitions. Gorgeous natural landscape and views from inside and out.
One of the best art galleries in Canada, and a must go for all Group of 7 fans. A bit of a drive from downtown Toronto, but ample parking and a great amount of art for a single visit. The park around looked nice, though the frozen rain prevented us from exploring too much outside.
A most beautiful area for an art gallery. Always great exhibits, nice trails for walking & other activities. The $7.00 for parking though is a bit much.
Overall a good experience and a great place to view Canadian art. The scenery surrounding the building is quite nice, and they have some interesting local and not so local artists on display
Beautiful and peaceful place, with unique sculptures park)
An Canadian iconic art gallery. Well worth visiting. Beautiful building in a beautiful setting.
Super amazing! I had not known this gallery existed. (Yes, maybe I've been living under a rock!) SO many Group of Seven original oils on boards, canvas, etc. Simply exquisite. And now featuring Canadian Folk Artist Maud Lewis with her bright, cheery paintings of the Eastern Canada. And they have a place to hold weddings. I can't wait to go again. Give yourself the whole day.
I went on my own and really got to scrutinize the art up close. Enjoyed a late lunch at the cafe there but by 1 pm they were running out of alot of the choices. I would enjoy both again . Looking forward to trying a few of the trails and maybe hunting for the cemetery.
The art gallery of indigenous Art telling the story of experiences in residential schools made me so emotional.
Had a wonderful walk through as it has been years since I've visited. The grounds are beautiful any time of the year. The cafe is quaint as is the little store. The staff is super knowledgeable and friendly.
Neat collection of Canadian art. Parking is $7 cash only but you can pay inside
Beautiful place to spend a day viewing Canadian art, focussing on the Group of 7.
Beautiful grounds, beautiful building, and of course, a beautiful collection of pure art. I especially loved the Tom Thomson pieces. The greatest Canadian artist of all time.
Such an amazing gallery representing the Art of Canada. The grounds are historical and beautifully set in Kleinburg which is one of the most beautiful towns in York Region. You do not need to be an art fan to enjoy this gallery. Just walking the grounds along the bank of the Humber river you will be swept away by the beauty of this place. A must see.
Attentive staff... Great exhibits... make sure you reserve for lunch...
Beautiful collection and trails. Staff were super helpful in planning our visit.
Beautiful grounds, great for walking, cozy gift shop and a perfect place for a family day.
We have been at this great museum multiple times but we absolutely love the new layout and setup! It makes so much more sense and really shows all of the artists and allows to see similarities and differences. Love this place...
In addition to the main collection, there are always several exhibitions happening concurrently, some of which are superb. The food is priced very high -- a cup of java is over $3.50. The sculpture garden contains large metal pieces all donated by the sculptor, and are odd and simplistic very large metal sculptures with a weird sci-fi/bizarre toy feel, visually. I didn't like any of them. The hiking trail is beautiful and wends around a small river amidst the tree area.
Absolutely wonderful gallery for Native American art and Group of Seven. The grounds are massive and peaceful with many walking trails. Can spend hours in the galleries which are packed! Been coming for years and will continue to do so.
Nice collection of the Group of Seven artwork. Located on a beautiful conservation area with extensive walking paths. Affordable fees (senior, adult and child rates) plus a parking fee. Easy to get to by car, a little outside of Toronto. A cafe/restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating available. Wheelchair and stroller accessible (elevators). Family friendly. I recommend a short visit here, schedule approximately 2-3 hours.
Beautiful facilities and a superb display of art in all galleries. cafe was also excellent.
Very beautiful place ....but don't bring kids the security are old lady's and are not kid friendly !!!!!
Great collection of Canadian art including Group of Seven work. Nestled beautifully into the surrounding forests and hills!
Beautiful setting. Amazing artwork. Love the focus on Canadian Artists
Nice location and collection, however the staff are really rude weird and creepy. The McMichael's would be very disappointed.
Museum was great. Restaurant very poor.
The best gallery. Can't beat The Group of Seven, Tom Thomson and Emily Carr. And the setting and buildings harmonize with their paintings.
Wonderful collection! Worth the drive to view these art works. Great little shop too.
Wonderful Canadian art gallery with a beautiful building and wonderful trails surrounding it. Would highly recommend.
This is a nice venue but the staff really took away from the experience. They were so rude about me having a backpack with me - told me I cannot carry it on my back, which I understand, but were very rude about it and didn't tell me that there were lockers where I could have stored it. The woman followed me around the whole time I was on the guided tour as if expecting that I would be trying to steal something. Also rude when I re-entered after being outside - it had been raining so I had my umbrella. The woman - a different one - said to me :"That goes in your bag or you leave it outside." Just like that, as if I was some unruly adolescent. I will not go back. I can see more Group of Seven artwork elsewhere. I don't think Mr McMichael would be proud of the attitude of the staff.
Beautiful displays of Canadian art. A wonderful place to visit. Nice hiking trails around the grounds.
Beautiful surroundings. Gorgeous exhibits. Nice restaurant and excellent gift shop. Can spend an entire day there.
The finest Group of 7 collection. Great temporary exhibits
I learned so much about Canadian art. This is a fantastic place to learn about the art created here. Also how the gallery is situated in the forest is incredibly atmospheric.
Fantastic art collection never stops impressing even after being here many times.
Very nice grounds besides the art museum, unfortunately it started raining so I couldn't walk around
Good day trip from Toronto. Art is mediocre but special exhibitions can have some merit, check program in advance. Best Canadian art is the view of the ravine from the gallery windows. There are no good restaurants nearby so plan on eating elsewhere ☹️
The McMichael Collection highlights Canadian artists. What I enjoyed most this visit was a notable improvement in the representation of Aboriginal artists. A larger number of works of art. I loved that Norval Morisseau has his own room...hooray! The Maud Lewis exhibit was delightful. The grounds are set in an ideallic location with walking trails for those who want to forest bathe, or the little shops and restaurants in town for those who want to spend a day in Kleinburg. It is a museum that is small enough to be enjoyed within a few hours and you don't feel rushed or crowded.
An escape from the city and my happy place. Love visiting here any time I get the chance. The Mary Pratt and Jack Bush exhibitions were among the best I've seen.
Kids went there for summer camp. It was very well run the kids had a blast. The place is incredibly well maintained.
Beautiful gallery and gift shop. Friendly and helpful staff. The gallery is almost devoid of any art by the Group of Seven - other than Lauren Harris - but they have a good selection of other local and Canadian art.
Group of seven, urban iconagraphy, guitar project, inuit art; just awesome !!!
Beautiful foresty location just outside Toronto. Has been a favourite of mine since i am a child. Well worth the visit. Has trails and outdoor art as well.
Although I only had limited time and access to see the museum , I will definitely be back to explore more another day!
A lovely place for a day outing from Toronto
Great layout and where to go to see group of sevens work
Enjoyed the Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment exhibit which was Great & the influence from the Group of Seven. Had brunch at the McMichael Café & the food was Excellent & the service from Elizabeth was Over the Top! Also shopped at the McMichael Gallery Shop & purchased a unique beautiful carved wooden owl designed by an artist. The staff service was very helpful & Amazing. The whole day was a Great Experience. Thank you.
Aside from the breathtaking exhibitions, the building and grounds are beautiful and an oasis that must be experienced. One can't help but decompress here. The food in the restaurant is always fresh and inventive and the gift shop offers a wonderful array of jewelery and Canadian crafts. This gallery is a Canadian treasure.
We always love going to McMichael. This exhibit surpasses in its uniqueness. Seven artisans and performers that display their love for the gallery made this an experience for all to enjoy.
Not just the art collection, but the building itself and the surroundings are superb.
Awe inspiring, for sure! Lovely place to spend a day.
Great for a stroll, Pleasant, nice bar for a coffee break and a sweet bite
Wonderful day at the gallery. Beautiful grounds surround the buildings where one can walk and enjoy the scenery.
5 Star experience .. Beautiful museum, Amazing canadian art .. Had a wonderful afternoon .. There are walking trails to take a stoll .. Highly recommended for the art lovers ???? ???? and the quaint village of Kleinburg is minutes away ????
Phenomenal venue for anyone who likes arts and culture. Terrific way to support world class Canadian artists from coast to coast to coast.
Such a beautiful quiet place to go to. The trail is so nice and colorful, although one of the trails was closed off
3 fabulous exhibits. Beautiful gallery and grounds. Enticing gift shop. Mediocre food at the restaurant.
Went for trekking. Beautiful place for art loving people with all the carved statues out there and then going for a long hike. Nice trail.
This is our 'go to' museum for out of town guests. They always appreciate the 'Canadiana' aspect of it, and the one time we had a guest in a wheelchair, the accessibility of this museum was also a bonus, plus we love the special exhibits and usually return several times a year ourselves.
The Russians have The Group of Five aka The Five, a name given to a team of five Russian composers who united in the 1860s to develop an authentic national school of music. But the Canadians have The Group of Seven, a name reserved for an association of seven European descent landscape painters formed in the early 1900s. Their originality is striking. Seeing their works, one soon notices that they are a moving rendition of the European settlers' emotional reaction to the great landscapes of Canada, including the Arctic. This art collection located in a magnificent forest should be a must for any self respecting foreign or Canadian tourist.
It was disappointing to see how far the gallery has strayed from its original focus of showcasing the art of The Group of Seven, Tom Thom son, Inuit and First Nations. It was originally a unique collection in a beautiful setting. The beauty of the natural surroundings is undiminished but the gallery itself has lost much of its charm. The entrance hall is a messy shambles with the uninspiring restaurant taking up most of the space. I remember how it was a breathtaking experience on first entering the foyer. The staff, on the whole, is rude, overbearing and surly. Of the five staff members we had contact with today only one was pleasant and forthcoming. However, I would still return for another visit, as nothing can take away from the power of the art to inspire and delight.
Just a wonderful place to visit and enjoy . We tend to come every time a new artist is featured, not that we don't enjoy the group of seven because we really do. The walking trails for those who like to is also a nice place to have a picnic too. With the added bonus of a few sculptures.
The place itself and location with view and landscaping amazing but frames, arts and pictures display on site look really different, didn't see that wow or can go again.
Wonderful Art Gallery and docent lead tour of their latest showThe Uninvited.
Have been going here since I was first introduced to the incredible Group of 7 in my high school year, decades ago and never disappointed. The location is beautifully set in nature with nature trails for a relaxing walk enjoyed after a viewing of some incredible paintings. I am biased and absolutely love The Group of 7, their artistic expression is breathtaking. It opened my eyes at 17 and was mesmerized by their personal lenses on the world, on nature. They offered a new way of looking out into the world that captured my imagination and curiosity. This one high school outing was a tipping point, a game changer that further expanded my little teenage world and showed me a world of possibilities. I have been a member for the longest time, supporting this magical place, and hope, that others too may find the magic here with these artists.
A spectacular collection of Canadian art , particularly the Group of Seven, in a beautiful location.
While staying true to its Canadiana art mandate, the McMichael Collection under a new Director surprised me with a diversification to include modern and abstract art. While I did not do a study of all the offerings, we spent 4 wonderful hours quietly contemplating most works on display. It was a quiet weekday in April and the kind of verge of Spring weather Tom Thompson liked to paint. Most, if not all, the modern artists on exhibit were women and from Quebec...often from the 1960s and 60s perhaps reacting to the Quiet Revolution. We did not get as much inspiration or sense of intrigue from this art as we continue to experience with the traditional offerings of the Group of Seven and their contemporaries as well as the First Nations art of the Inuit and Norval Morrisseau. But everyone has their palate and the whole thing was extremely well curated and presented. The museum is a spectacular square hewed log structure in the woods perched upon high embankments. There are plenty of window and benchs/chairs to rest. A well-developed gift shop is on the ground floor along with a restaurant. Washrooms are distributed well and there are many kinds of workshops, tours hosted throughout the season. This is such an appropriate setting for the Canadian landscape art contained within as well as the intensely representative art of the First Nations...which I understand makes up about 30% of the collection.
I hadn't been for many years but now it is one place I want to revisit all the time. They support a wider variety of current artists as well as the beautiful Group of Seven Collection. The boutique restaurant is fantastic. Service is professional. The food is top quality. The grounds are beautiful and we've had lovely picnics before we fell in love with the restaurant. Parking is easy but not free. I think that is wise as it supports the grounds and offers some security.
Fascinating, Canadian artwork at its best. Gorgeous grounds and history. Where sensible shoes, lots of walking.
One of the best art collections in Canada. And don't forget the hiking trails and sculpture park.
Beautiful place to go with family or with a few friends. Amazing views and serene atmosphere.
Wonderful place, magical setting for group of 7 and other featured Canadian artists! They have a wonderful program for school kids!
I love this Gallery. We're from Maryland, but we visit the gallery almost every time we visit family in Toronto. There's something so uplifting about the artwork combined with the setting that makes McMichael a special place to visit.
Wonderful gallery. Worth a visit!
Fascinating Canadian Artwork in a lovely setting of Nature Trails. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. The highlight of our day!
Fantastic art evocative of all that is Canadian wilderness presented in the perfect setting. Museum and grounds just gorgeous.
Beautiful scenic cultural! Great Canadian collection. With hertitage and more compterary aritidt all in display.Great staff who all love what they do .. their enthusiasm Is catchy. When even stayed for lunch at their little bistro
Had a great visit to the Lewis Exibit. Look forward to a return visit. BUT will NOT visit the Cafe again. Sandwich order took well over half-hour to appear. Tasty but 'pricy'. Didn't appreciate water served in a 'jar'.
Very disappointed was really looking forward to returning again after a number of years only to find that the focus of the collection had changed considerably. Several of the Group of Seven only had a few pictures showing though there were a number of Thompson's and Jackson's but with a World War Two slant to the exhibit. There was only one or two Emily Carr and Clarence Gagnon, my husband's favourite, was no longer on display. Instead we were treated? to three large exhibit areas of modern art including one with a display of gessoed shoes. This institution is advertized as the Canadian Group of Seven home, sadly not any more. The grounds and building are still lovely and the staff helpful but why was it necessary to ruin what was a beautiful collection. Please leave the fabric art to the Toronto Tapestry museum and shoe displays for the Art Gallery of Ontario. It was not worth the drive from Milton to Kleinburg I could have seen more Group of Seven pictures at the AGO.
Tranquil, lovely art, amazing grounds! The atmosphere is peaceful both inside the buildings and throughout the grounds. An emphasis on Canadian art centers the gallery. There are wonderful trails around the property as well as sculptures to discover. Wonderful little village as well. Watch out for traffic though. During commute hours the few roads become quite sluggish. Plan accordingly.
Inside and outside this gallery is stunning. The grounds and architecture are perfection. Walking through the galleries and viewing the paintings by The Group of Seven and Tom Thompson you feel as if you are on a hike through the woods. I wondered if these paintings have taught me how to see Canada.
Nice place to spend a day with one's family.
My first visit to this iconic gallery. Art work beautifully arranged throughout facility. Truly impressed with indigenous masks, carvings and paintings. Group of 7 separated into various rooms showed how each on their own were brilliant but each influenced the others. Walked some of the pathways around the grounds but it would be even more beautiful in the summer.
A great way to spend a day on the weekend. Great collection of Canadian art. I enjoyed the group of seven pieces.
Large gallery with a focus on Indigenous Canadian and Group of Seven art. The social distancing protocals were well done.
Wonderful works of art in a beautiful setting. The gallery is in McMichael's1950's log house with expansive windows overlooking the trails and trees of the Humber River valley. We were so fortunate to arrive in time for an excellent guided tour of the David Milne collection. Now we better understand the artist and the evolution of his works. Plan on spending the day and enjoy a lovely lunch in the gallery restaurant. Most worthwhile.
We really enjoyed our visit to McMichael. The Maude Lewis exhibit was fantastic. She truly was an extraordinary woman, with such originality. It is such a joyful experience to see her paintings. We really enjoyed the Clarence Gagnon exhibit as well.I haven't seen it in quite a while. His illustrations for Maria Chapdelaine are exquisite. My friend was viewing them for the first time and enjoyed them. All in all it was a wonderful afternoon. Regards, Joan Fulford
Amazing loved it. I will be going back again and again. To much to see it all in one visit. The sculptures around the vast grounds are incredibly beautiful.
Quiet and peaceful place..inside and out..more modern first Nations arts displayed...learned a lot from the tour
Beautifully designed space displaying an incredible collection, I'm so grateful to have had the chance to visit.
Loved grounds especially beautiful place to walk. Shows were good too.very peaceful. Great Escape from city just 30 minutes away.
I went to see the 100 years of the group of seven. Anyone who loves the Canadian great outdoors and these great artists would enjoy this exhibition. The McMichael is a magical place, go visit in any season
Jul.08/15 I took my good friend to this gallery yesterday to show off to her all the wonderful works of the Great Group of Seven that I have been bragging about for years, and was disappointed to find that not one of my favourite works were on display. I am very disappointed to see that all the best works have been removed from the collection. Where are they, and when will they be returned to enjoy? Loaning out is a great way to make money, but, not all the best at the same time. The Upper Gallery was splendid, and we were lucky enough to catch a tour. The tour was excellent, but jaded. The person refused to talk at all about symbolism in the works. It is a long drive for me from Pickering to your gallery, and I would not do it again to see the sad display of work in the main gallery. Any tourist who is there for the first time is getting a very poor idea of what we know to be so special about this collection. Please let me know when the works have returned. P.S. The staff gave me unsatisfactory answers as to where the works were. They were very polite, but however, they acted as if I were stupid not to understand that at no time were all the works on display. Suzanne Adams Long time supporter.
Giving a 3 because the people who work their same rather snooty and self absorbed. Follow you around as if you are going to steal something. Kind of ruined the viewing process for me. Other then that the artwork was beautiful, the building was very clean and nicely decorated. The grounds were also beautiful. Definitely worth a visit, just don't expect a warm welcoming environment.
Drove more than an hour in the snow to visit this place and it was all worth it. The art on display is so amazing because they have such distinct styles. So Canadian. Everything is so well laid out, the descriptions were very well done and the ambience was just perfect. The Group of Seven displays were the last exhibit and they were fantastic. I've always admired their work but today, I realized how many other super talented female Canadian artists there were. I also appreciated their perspectives compared to the male artists. Just two gripes: Price: The parking fee was unnecessarily high at $7 and the admission fee of $18 was rather high compared to the number of exhibits. As a result, I didn't feel like donating any more. (Call me cheap, maybe, but it's a matter of principle.) Attendants: I wish they had more attendants who were more knowledgeable of the artwork. I met a young recent high school grad and he was awesome with sharing many insights into the artists, the grounds, buildings, etc. This place is about the same as when I first visited it more than 20 years ago. They have room to improve and justify the admission fee.
Only about 1/4 of the space is showing Group of Seven paintings. The rest is not really worth seeing… Inuit and native Canadian art, hip-hop photography, amateur photography contest winners, and non-Group of Seven Canadian painters. Not what I came to see, unfortunately.
Absolutely marvelous place. They exhibit great Canadian artwork in a beautiful setting. Well worth it.
Great Canadian art. Lots of Group of Seven art plus First Nations art.
A must place to go for art lovers! Beautiful collection of arts and walking trail near Humber River.
A fantastic bonus after a nearby hike! Friendly and helpful stuff, interesting collection of Inuit artists and the group of seven. Amazing story that the generous McMichael couple donate half of their house as the gallery...Made my day and highly recommended!
I never fail to be overwhelmed by the beauty and serenity of this place
Have never been to the McMichael and thoroughly enjoyed the David Milne exhibit and the film on Tom Thomson. Beautiful building, grounds and collection. Very worthwhile.
Beautiful gallery to visit
We just went for trail walk around the museum and it was awesome, especially with Humber river on the side of the trail. The outdoor sculptures were also a nice treat to look at.
Good place to stay away from the city, it also has a good hiking trails.
I accessed the McMichael website "VISIT" page to determine the open hours of the museum as I had guests in from out of town and we wanted to see the exhibit. It gave hours and prices but no where on the page did it say, "Timed Admissions Only" or "Online bookings only" or even "how to book online". We made the 40 minute drive and on arrival were told that there were no more available tickets, that they were accepting only "timed arrival" tickets -- in other words, ONLY online tickets. I would have happily bought tickets ahead of time had I known. I stated that I had accessed the website that morning and that there was no mention of online tickets only, or timed arrival tickets only. They told me I was wrong (I have since checked again and am not wrong). They suggested we wait around for 2 hours for their next opening. It was clear that nobody believed me, or cared. We walked the sculpture garden and left. Thumbs down for terrible customer service, for wasting my time and that of my out of town guests. Fix your Visits page
This is one of the great Canadian galleries. You don't see many of this calibre in Canada. It goes out of its way to showcase classic Canadian talent. I don't think the ROM is as good as McMichael. There is also a nature trail to see the type of landscape from which the Group of Seven drew their inspiration.
I have been to the gallery which is wonderful however our purpose on this occasion was for a wedding and it was a great venue. Loved it and would definitely recommend it.
I truly love this gallery. I always check ahead to make sure the exhibits are ones I will enjoy. The gallery, the grounds, artwork, sculptures are beautiful. But this may have been my last visit. Why am I paying for parking and admission only to have to endure rude staff?
Wonderful day at the McMichael art gallery. Had not been in 44 years! Had such a great day viewing these true Canadian masterpieces. Had a nice walk around the trail afterwards. Not to be missed.
intimate gallery in a great cabin like building
????
Very poor service at parking kiosk. Had a free admission voucher but would not honour parking. Saved the hassle (and the $7) by parking offsite and enjoyed a 5 minute walk through the beautiful trails... For those without a free pass - the gallery is limited so suggest you pay the extra $1.50 and go to AGO.
An impressive collection of art. The grounds of the building are beautiful, lots of trails and outdoor art to see. Great gift shop - well worth the trip to Kleinburg.
Do not miss this gallery. Wonderful experience
A famous Canadian art gallery. Standing in front of Group Seven’s paintings, I felt so exciting and enjoying. Besides the gallery, There are many art attractions like sculpture garden etc.
Very quite place. There is a Entrance fee for this place. Suitable for older people.
The home of group of seven... that enough. And a great areas for trips.
Nice gallery in a scenic setting. You can go to see the collection or just take a walk on the scenic grounds for free.
Love the Group of Seven so this is a must see. The price of admission is high which limits access to see these essential parts of Canadiana. The grounds are great to walk as well
Our niece's wedding reception had a beautiful setting. Staff was on point the whole night
Restaurant was pricey and super slow. 45 min for soup and sandwich really cut down our time for the galleries. Alex Janvier exibit was amazing! Not a huge gallery overall though. We just did the tour in 2 hours, but had to skip the video presentations. Lots of nooks with easy chairs and beautiful views out over the valley.
Beautiful park, museum a bit pricey.admision tivkets Local gift store average selection but skyrocketing prices e.g. a shawls $ 80 something. Local cafe/ bar/ restaurant. Expensive, take your own drink and sandwich In the summer lack of flowers in front of the museum. In Germany the area would be covered in flowers Overall it is worth to see the Group Seven paintings.
Great place to spend a day!
A wonderful gallery to see many different selection of art from back in the day. They also focus on some of the women during the time that didn't get as much recognition
A lot of interesting paintings, spend almost 3 hours inside. Thanks for all efforts and time who support the exhibition to give people a chance to enjoy and know about our history
Wonderful day inside and outside the gallery. Great pandemic escape.
Racist and rude staff! The collection is really good and I enjoyed visiting it with my daughter. But my 1 star review is for the terrible service. The staff was very rude and if you are a person of colour be sure to be followed around or being snubbed by the staff. Very disappointed with this! Without considering that my 7 year old daughter was with me, the staff picked a fight with me for parking. I had to tell her that, "if it was a white person instead of me, I am sure you would have been very polite!"
Great Canadian art, especially Group of Seven. Beautiful building, excellent dinning, great trails.
Amazing experience, will come back some day soon
A great place to spend a day just walking around enjoying the exhibits!
I do not claim to be knowledgeable in art so I am not going to talk about the artwork. My 5 star review comes from someone who went to the gallery on a whim and really enjoyed it! It is such a beautiful gallery sitting on beautiful grounds. With a place that is not that far from the city, it feels like you've escape from the busyness of life. It is a calming place to be. I enjoyed the guided tour of the gallery. (At the time, they had the Maud Lewis collection up, and the guide did a really good job telling her story.) The lunch at their restaurant was lovely. With a 1 year old daughter, we bought a one year membership. We now randomly go, sometimes simply just to be somewhere my daughter can wander safely with a beautiful backdrop. (We go first thing in the morning so it's not too busy.)
Disappointed. There were several exhibitions but almost no Group of Seven paintings to see. One has to now time one's visit to Ontario to coincide with McMichael's calendar in order to see their collection of Group of Seven paintings.
The best museum to learn about The Group of 7.
Beautiful place. Great Canadian art, nice open old style architecture. The grounds are gorgeous with really nice walking paths. Just a nice jewel right outside of the city
I enjoyed the Gallery with its views of wooded valley and some works of Group of Seven not often seen. I also enjoyed the northern Innuit artist and her story.
Uninvited was a real eye opener. Beautiful art! Sadly neglected until now ( although some galleries and collectors clearly knew about these women).
Wonderful place to spend a morning, afternoon or both. I can't wait to go back and what new Canadian collections they are presenting. The cafe has tasty food that incorporates locally sourced ingredients, but book ahead so you don't have to wait for a seat!
I really enjoy the combination of art and nature. The people working there are always friendly and knowledgeable. The exhibits are interesting.
We had timed tickets. Great permanent collection and wonderful exhibit on First Nations art. Beautiful grounds for walking and quick snacks available at the cafe.
Sculpture Garden at McMicheal Canadian Art Collection is bold and provocative. Artists were way ahead of time in 1930's.
Lovely setting. Great building. Beautiful exhibits. Take a spoken tour!
Horrible work ethics, they should learn how treat people better and with respect
Recommend going in the fall. The views are beautiful. Attended during one of the local arts show. So many talented artists
It was really nice to see this collection while hiking in Boyd Conservation Area. Both gallery and restaurant in the middle of the woods, made it spectacular place to visit!
I'm a big fan of the McMichael Gallery. With its focus on the Group of Seven it's quintessentially Canadian. Some of the temporary exhibits are hit and miss. The setting in Humber River valley is absolutely gorgeous. Certainly worth to drive to Klienburg.
It is always so nice to visit this Canadian treasure. The new Curator is doing a great job and the special exhibits are well thought out and interesting. Suggest leaving time to walk around the property in any season.
Worth a visit, gentle entertainment and an important glimpse into the Canadian art scene. Cafe serves tasty lunches and provides charming and assiduous service.
A nice experience. Very open and a touch of nature added for your pleasure
Wonderful exhibits in addition to the main attraction of the Group of Seven display. Such a beautiful representation of Canadian artists in a perfect setting. When you look through the windows of the gallery in this fall season, it feels like you are in a real-life Group of Seven landscape. Such a relaxing venue in this time of Covid. Thank-you, McMichael Gallery. What a treasure!
Gorgeous collection of some of Canada's most iconic artworks. Location is tucked within the city but feels private and isolated; even the driveway is beautiful. Check out the cemetery where several members of the Group of Seven are laid to rest. There is a charge for parking as well as entry to the exhibits. A fantastic place to be equally inspired by the gallery and the vibrant landscape.
Very clean, all the staff was very polite, and excellent at answering any questions about the artwork and displays. Very knowledgable staff!
Nice setting. The number of paintings from the Group of Seven is limited. A few Inuit Artworks
Very good place to see the works of Group of Seven...
Went for the Maud Lewis Exhibition. Gallery was filled with her amazing art on loan from collections all over.
Current exhibit was "JEH MacDonald: Up Close". Excellent and worth the visit. ...."Everything Remains Raw" which is a Hip Hop photo exhibit that isn't my favourite subject matter and became a bit repetitous after a while. After all, how many magazine covers do you need to look at?
It's a great place an great way to spend your day away form the big City!
Love it.. worth it to become a member as it is less $ than 2 visits with parking ..picnic on the beautiful grounds
First time, very impressed
Grate time butifull place. Had the best of time with my daughter that ❤ the art work .Dad loved it too.
Been a member 2 years. Great gallery for quiet contemplation of mostly Canadian art, although half native, some Quebec artists, a few West Coast pieces and large Group of Seven and Tom Thompson collection. Moved away from original McMichael collection so that it is only about half of pieces exhibited. Great grounds and ample walking paths.
Great Gruop of Seven +Tom Thompson exits all year round plus other seasonal exhibits. Really enjoyed the Maud Lewis which I believe is there until early December 2019.
Unique!
I actually only walked through the grounds as i was hiking on the Humber trail close by. Doesn't look like much has changed since i went here on a school trip a million and a half years ago. Putting a proper visit on my list of places to see and hope to review very soon.
Amazing gateway for a day
A beautiful setting and a fantastic collection of Canadian art curated with intelligence and sensitivity. I found the day a bit marred by the heavy-handedness of the monitors throughout the exhibit; they were on top of me every time they felt i was too close to the art, or if they thought i was going to take a photograph. I even saw them being rather stern with some kids telling them they had to stay with adults. The kids were just walking about on their own, they were not wild or disruptive. A gallery should be a joyous place of exploration, not a stern panopticon reminiscent of high school detention. In spite of how wonderful i think this gallery is, i think it has to make a choice as to whether it wants to become a place of beauty, jouissance and celebration of Canadian art or a stern church-like place of worship for the submissive, obedient elite. I am an art fanatic and i felt guilty after two reprimands; this might not be a destination for the less devout.
excellent! not crowded. wonderful art. great spaces. gorgeous setting. informative tour.
This is a beautiful place. I newly found. There are nice trails too. The parking at the Art museum is $7. But there is a free parking place if you go to Teston rd then turn right when u see the white board said xxx park( forgot the name). There are parking lots beside the baseball, tennis courts.
Watch for the Fall Art sale run by the volunteers. Lots of fantastic artist work to see and buy. Bonus: fall colors and see the group of seven works. Also lots of contemporary work to see too in the very well curated exhibits.
An imersive way to look back at Canada 's history through art.
As far as art galleries go this one isnt too bad. The group of seven do have a diverse enout styles that you will see something interesting. The gallery layout is easy and they do have great guided toors. Can be a bit expensive for a family but worth the trip if you have never been before. The restaurant inside does have quite nice food but a bit on the foo foo fancy and they make money on the meal for sure. They ran out of craft beer for our visit. Pitty it was one of the things i was looking forward to
Fantastic paintings by the group of seven!
Director's cut is worth seeing. Just a beautiful gallery with very friendly staff.
Access for all. Gift shop has great choice of prints mugs cards etc. Need time to see everything.
Wonderful gallery and I felt privileged to be able to host my wedding there. The nature surrounding the gallery is mesmerizing, the architecture unique and intimate and the art stunning.
Great art, great building. BUT I have to complain about the security staff in the galleries. There was a male security guard and a female guard talking very loudly about their personal lives, their financial investments and politics. Talking so loud they were disturbing the experience of the visiting public. Oblivious they were. Spoiled some Group of Seven moments for me.
The place and park are wanderful
Beautiful grounds only enhance the experience that the exhibits display.
First rate exhibition of Canadian artists and their art.
Well organised, decor, Good service bit warm dinning hall, could do with am lot of fresh and cool air
One of the finest galleries in Canada, specializing in indigenous art and the Group of Seven. The 7's work has to be seen in person to truly appreciate their uniquely Canadian mastery of light and snow. Also home to the most gorgeous walking trails starting from the sculpture garden in the heart of Kleinburg, along the Humber River.
This place is awesome! The staff at the gift shop are nice and patient! Security are nice and have free parking just to go to the gift shop! Will be back and join the membership!
First visit, will definitely be back soon!
Definitely worth the admission. The grounds are beautiful and they have a great selection of art!
It's set in nature with mature trees & hiking trail. Modern architecture and plenty of parking. They have permanent as well special exhibits. Group of seven & Norman Mogishu are among the permanent exhibits. Also they have preserved the studio/shack of Tom Thompson a prominent group of seven artists.
This is a great place to view Canadian art. Please pay your respects to the group of seven at their graves. A short walk outside the gallery.
Great exhibit very well run for Covid times
New show The Uninvited is excellent!
Great place, the garden was beautiful as well! I was expecting to see more paintings from the group of seven tho
