(Translated) I liked the pre-Columbian and contemporary pieces. Good gift ideas at the museum shop. (Original) J'ai bien aimé les pièces précolombiennes et contemporaines. Bonnes idées cadeaux à la boutique du musée.
A complete day of fun! So much to see here. Take a day for it and take it slow. Worth it!
Well located and has access to subway and 777 Bay St. I.e. Service Ontario
Clean, well laid out displays, informative, free on weekends.
If you are interested in pottery, china etc, this is the place to be, the exhibits are interesting and you can easily spend several hours here. There is a restaurant upstairs but did look quite expensive. You can purchase a combined ticket for the Bata Shoe Museum and Textile Museum for $20.
This place was awesome. Beautiful porcelain & ceramics collections. Great experience. Atmosphere was good.
They offer very good courses in the history of ceramics but undercut their scientific credibility with a new-age spirituality preface.
Well run place. Like ceramics? This place is for you!
Our first time visiting this museum. It's free admission at present, only 2 floors open. Very nice inside, however it is nothing special. Restaurant looks nice but it's not open.
(Translated) Ceramic Museum in Toronto - Gardiner Museum A small museum in front of the Royal Museum - ROM - on 4 floors with basement - containing old and new products from some countries and continents made of ceramic. Clean and tidy and quiet with good ceramic information. Porcelain from Japan and China was on the same floor. The third floor is a place for brain teasers to create an idea and use ceramics to make a personal souvenir.
Visited today especially for the Ai Weiwei exhibit. Loved this bright and airy museum that houses just ceramics. Has a coffee shop on site with a good view, and a workshop in the basement. They occasionally offer free admittance like today, which kicked off the start of March break. Worth a visit. Parents: I wouldn't suggest this place for kids under 10. They will be bored.
Great architecture, nice resto
A nice, small, polished, meticulous museum for all age groups! If you love ceramics, you'd definitely enjoy a visit to Gardiner Museum. Went with my significant other two weeks ago and learned a lot about the evolution of ceramics over the past few centuries. Take advantage of its free admission over the summer when offered.
Prime location at Bloor & Queen's Park, beautiful building and artefacts, and a decent tour-guide. The best part for elementary students was sculpting clay in the basement with real artists in an awesome studio!
If you're into ceramics this is a very interesting place. If not it's still worth a visit.
(Translated) Well worth a visit (Original) Bien vale la pena dedicarle una visita
Wonderful well lit with social distancing
small but so beautiful museum about ceramics from America to Europe, Asia. Hard to leave the European part in 2nd floor - so beautiful.
The museum itself is kind of lacklustre. Some interesting pieces, but nothing grandiose. The best is the drop in programs. I did a clay making class and it was so much fun and the instructor was really helpful. I'd go again if only for that.
Makes ceramics interesting even if you don’t know much about the subject. The contemporary section is intellectually challenging in a good way. Pre-Colombian ceramics are incredibly moving. The rest is, if less surprising, first class quality.
The museum is very well organized and full of interesting information.
The museum is very well organized and full of interesting information.
Amazing! I can not praise this museum enough! The collections were gorgeous and the visiting shows fascinating! I know I am late to review but Yoko Ono's Riverbed was the best show I saw in 2018! I implore everyone to visit! The gift shop was also fantastic!
I came to the museum for the Ai Weiwei exhibit and because it was during their birthday weekend we got to enter for free. There was quite a long line but it was expected because the entrance was free. I was told that the exhibit is short and with few pieces but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. There were a variety of pieces that would speak to different types of art lovers. The museum also made sure to provide art experts to explain all of Ai’s pieces which added quite a lot more substance. The other floors also had quite a few ceramics and pieces that had great history but of course the main draw was the Ai Weiwei exhibit. I also made plans w friends to come back and enjoy the cafe as it looks very nice and quite an experience in itself.
Quality food. Great service. Good atmosphere. Upscale.
Pleasant place. Recommended for art lovers.
Nice and quaint museum! I mainly went for the Yoko Ono exhibition, but the entire museum was very well kept, organized, and professional.
I saw ad for Free family event on Sunday, but when we get there, we were told adult has to buy ticket for $15 each, then the kids can join.... I don't think this is correct way to attract customer.
Love going to this place for drop-in clay classes! They offer both hand-building and wheel throwing options, though the latter is more popular so you have to get there early to get seats! The museum is great too, although I wish they had more frequent special exhibits
I have been meaning to check this museum out for awhile. We were only there for a couple of hours but it was a fascinating experience. From the central and mesoamerica pottery on the first floor to the detailed history and evolution of European porcelain on the second floor. I may return to try out some of the hands on workshops another time as well.
Lovely little museum focused entirely on ceramics. The collection the beautiful. I especially loved the Japanese porcelain exhibit.
A wonderful, creative and educational museum for families, individuals and creative folks of all ages. The museum is situated right in the heart of the city of Toronto, at the corner of Bloor Street and Avenue Road. It is right across the street from the world famous ROM (Royal Ontario Museum), and steps aways from opulence of Bloor Street shopping and the glamour and mystique of Yorkville and Hazelton Lanes.
Always a treat to visit this museum. The 3rd floor usually has contemporary interesting exhibit, last year Yoko Ono and now Ai WeiWei. Closing soon....
They have big collections of ceramic.
Set back from the street, quiet in it's refined facade, this is a museum often passed over and missed. It's well worth a visit. It takes us on a truncated and general tour of ceramics which is interesting, and shows some exceptional examples. For a couple of hours of stimulating respite from the city, this is a perfect choice. **There is a terrific restaurant for a light bright fresh lunch on the upper floor with grand views over the street and the ROM at good prices. It's light-filled space with a vaulted ceiling is relaxing and one of the best off-the-beaten path dining rooms you'll find. Enjoy!!
Love the collection of art here
Pottery, ceramics, interesting stuff! Cool and lovely place!
Great collection. Friday is half price!!
Honestly, this is a wonderful place to visit if you want to spend a few hours diving into ceramics. It's not loud and crowded like the ROM or AGO, and offers you a peaceful space to closely observe these premodern and modern works. The collections are well curated, and it offers you an truly engaging experience with classical music in the background as well. Definitely one of my favourite places in Toronto now!
They have big collections of ceramic.
A really cool museum with a restaurant that has a piano player. Check it out. The salade nicoise was very nicely done.
The Gardiner Museum is finally getting the recognition that it deserves in Toronto's Art Community. Small but mighty ???? Be sure to put it on this Summer's Bucket List ????
Gorgeous collection, and great exhibit year round! They also offer clay classes which are super fun and very welcoming for all.
We had a good experience with the family event being held on Sundays. The art exhibition is really interesting. We found the Clay restaurant a bit expensive (good doughnut though).
Great place, lots of nice things to see, the gift shop is AWESOME and very nice people work there.
(Translated) Worth a visit (Original) 值得一去
Good collection of clay art and porcelain from around the world. Civilizations including South American, North American, Asian and European were included on the first two floors. We didn’t visit the other fours or the basement, since they weren’t open to the public on Wednesdays.
(Translated) Nice museum (Original) Неплохой музей
fantastic. clean. functional.
A fascinating museum, in a convenient downtown location, that gets limited attention in our big city. Great to see the ancient art especially. Kind of a small museum, and they were changing collections this week so even less was open, but still well worth a visit!
Cute museum
Best 15$ spent on a museum. The tremendous amount of porcelain and ceramic collections, and all the knowledge shared makes this visit appealling for both ignorants and experts on pottery.
I can’t believe the number of times I’ve been to the ROM and didn’t even know this gem of a museum existed so close! I went in to see the pieces created by Japneet Kaur and ended up really appreciating how much of the content was Southern American (esp. Peruvian) and south East Asian (esp. Japanese and Chinese). Very clean and low key so you can just have a quite stroll through the place!
beautiful museum--but toooooo small.
A truly unique museum where you can learn about the history of ceramics. Not sure how well known the upstairs restaurant is but food looks amazing. You can also book a wedding here. A nice quiet place to go if you are in the area and have about an hour to spare. Cute gift shop in front! P.s. can you please "like" this so I can become a Master Reviewer?
(Translated) Welcoming with a lovely rock garden with small trees Not crowded Walk to see casual art About ceramics There is a restaurant above And has a workshop area (Original)
A much more interesting museum than I had originally expected. A couple of exhibits were quite amazing I found beautiful and unique pieces throughout.
It's a great museum. Every piece is a history.
When we visited the place was being reformed, so some parts were not available. Overall is a gorgeous building, well located. The instructors for the clay classes were amazing.
It's an open secret that the Gardiner is a great alternative to the ROM, especially if you're into ceramics, or not into crowds. Right across from the ROM, it's a smaller, more focused museum that offers great exhibits year round. Top floor is a rotating exhibit, 2nd floor is European/Asian and 1st floor is ancient/contemporary. Saw their 10 different new age Christmas trees last week for the first time which was cute. Definitely worth a visit for locals and tourists alike!
Good ceramic collection. " we are but clay "
Small but packed with items, the gift shop is a must.
Very recommended I deeply enjoyed
The special exhibit with Ai Weiwei was excellent. Particularly the gallery where they put three replicas he had made. A fun museum that isn’t terribly long to work your way through and it’s very modestly priced. Well worth stopping in. The third floor cafe is gorgeous!
Went to see the True Nordic exhibit, which was smaller than I expected but still full of great information and wonderful pieces, both original and contemporary. The rest of the museum is a treasure trove of pottery, and definitely worth the visit!
great museum but they're terrified of copyright infringement. they OK non-flash photography but 98% of the items are behind glass!! in the whole place, there were two exhibits NOT behind glass. it's like watching television.
Very interesting.
I always feel so invigorated and inspired when I leave the Gardiner Museum. The museum has items on three floors, ranging from a wonderful collection of Central/South American pieces to 20th century modern pieces. The restaurant food is yummy, a bit pricey but the food is delicious. Best tip: The drop in classes on Friday and Saturday are both really popular, see their site for details. The sign up system should be going online by end of 2016, I heard (not a moment too soon!) But a great deal to see if you want to see if you're interested before signing up for an actual session. My son and I feel in love with potting with the wheel - so much fun.
A peaceful little gem. Always worth a visit and a sweet shop and cafe too.
So awesome ???? ????
Honestly, I love the Gardiner Museum because it has an amazing collection including Ancient Olmec (pre-Mayan Central America), 13th Century Chinese porcelain, stunning Renaissance Italian masterpieces to Modern Canadian works. The mood at the Gardiner is just so quiet and pleasant, even on a weekday evening. The Gardiner Museum of Ceramics is like a quiet secret, that takes us to the greatest art from around the world, through time in a city which is often too loud and often ugly.
Small, well kept museum, beautiful porcelain & ceramics collections and interesting sculptures. Informative and polite tour guides. Good opportunities for special exhibitions and events. When you leave this place, you’ll be very inspired. Worth visiting for sure, especially for art lovers in general and ceramic art fans in particular. Parking could be challenging.
I really enjoyed attending the drop in ceramics class here! Beautiful building and friendly staff
Canada's National ceramics museum. Three floors of very interesting and beautiful ceramics and porcelain that's not just plates and cups!
Not really entertaining
If you're into ceramics then this is obviously your place to be! Collections from around the world demonstrating the variety of craftsmanship and artistic styles in pottery and beyond!
The museum was extremely interesting. The volunteer guide was so informative. A must see and thanks for the tour.
The musuem offers art programs for children and adults. Moreover, the museum showcases a vast amount of ceramic art.
I understand now why other reviewers have called this a hidden gem. I visited the museum on one of their culture days event. The historical pieces are very interesting and you get good bits of history alongside them. I found the design of the museum to be very modern and new age. They have gender neutral washrooms. So much of it is what you expect in a public museum these days. The clay restaurant has great aesthetic and eats, it’s a good break if you get hungry, you don’t have to leave the venue. The gift shop had some work from current artists that was very interesting to me. All in all, I learned a lot and I will be coming back for more. Perhaps one of their clay workshops! They currently also have a moving piece on the murdered and missing indigenous women.
Nice ???? ???????? museum It's free on weekends
The museum and drop in program is very interesting. However ...What a sick and twisted disrespect for peoples time! To get to program of 2 hours you have to spend 2h 15m on time of a program! Not to mention extra you are paying for parking if you happen to come by car. Recently I had guest out of town with kids And I though if would be fun things to do.We drove from Mississauga 5 of us on Sunday. We had to buy food for kids and find something to entertain them with for 2 hours in between. It was in a middle of the day and it was hard to decide what to do after - everybody where to cranky.Needless to say how horrible I felt with my bright idea of having something different to do. Tickets should be available for purchasing online for people out of town. And with such a busy life - how dare you make people waist so much time waiting in line! Must be a luring Technique from marketing prospective. Great place to waist time.
If you like looking at old dishes on display, you might enjoy this. It was just not for me.
(Translated) I came here to see where my favorite TV series was filmed (Original) Пришла сюда что б посмотреть в каком месте снимался мой любимый сериал
Lovely works of art and function. Glassware from the finest makers to beautiful pottery. If either are your thing it's a must see
A small gem of a collection.
A small gem of a collection.
Small intimate museum with great collection of ceramics and wonderful exhibitions. Visited it several times and always had a great experience. If you are an art lover, it should be on your to do list.
From the moment you enter this museum a feeling of calm falls over you.
Nice place to visit
A terrific museum, a definite "must visit" for all interested in history of art and trade, as well as global cultures. Great exhibitions, truly nice narration of the pieces, and well-designed thought-through floor planning. The Maya and Aztec collections located on the first floor are unparalleled, and could not be found elsewhere in Toronto. The third floor presents exciting European gallery (as of Nov-Dec 2021, dedicated to Renaissance Venice) with not only earthenware and porcelain, but with various carpentry, toiletries, paintings and city artefacts. Only wish the museum had more convenient visiting hours, since now they are almost exclusively overlapped with most of working adults' business hours.
The space is modern and well kept but small. The area available for receptions is also small and good for groups of around 50 people (give or take 10). Prices are very high here for both meals and venue space rental. No available parking included for events or otherwise.
Whether or not you like ceramics and chinaware, this is a must see. They have lots of beautiful ceramic and China pieces. Really enjoyed my visit.
Cool little museum of fragile works
Interesting museum. Good for family evening or weekend destination. Not as huge as ROM, so you won't be tired after it. The museum has many interesting thematic exibitions. If you are tired you have an opportunity to have a rest and eat something in the cafe on top floor with amaizing street view.
Pottery classes were fun and easy Edit: we came back to paint our pieces 2 weeks after.
This is truly a beautiful museum. The ceramic artwork is stunning. A must vist.
Place needs more variety and the items from more different parts of the world needs more information on the displayed items overall a great place to be they also offer pottery classes and they have restaurant on the top floor which has limited timing its half price on Wednesday and is open late on Wednesday
The pottery section is of real fun
Good collection. Got to go back
Visited a number of times to see installations and shows . It's a cool place to chill. Some of the shows are stimulating. Gift shop worth visit. Modern architecture. Go.
A peaceful little gem. Always worth a visit and a sweet shop and cafe too.
Went to a wedding here. Fine ceramic art gallery
So inspiring!
Incredible ceramics collection with artifacts from around the world, documenting thousands of years of the craft
Always a fantastic place to learn more about pottery, ceramics and clay making. The facilities are top notch and so are the exhibits
Unusual museum. Got taken here by my other half on a day out. Was not too bad if you are arty.
Great place to bring your kids!!
0 star for inflexible class policies and customer service. Security was very rude. Instructors were very nice however but it was just off putting when the receptionist treats you badly. Wouldn’t go back and recommend anymore. Better off supporting programs at AGO or ROM.
Very friendly staffs! Ceramic workshop is fun, although the way to get ticket is not... Come early to get your ticket, the line is pretty long.
They do clay pottery workshops downstairs great for families or large groups
It’s not about the location, as much as it’s about the people. The energy of professionals having a purpose and tasks to accomplish makes a fundraiser a success. As always a sprint plan, schedules as well as teams being told what is expected differentiates an agile team from a not agile - youth volunteer team. Successful fundraiser. The location is art friendly. There is a prayer room for Jews, and other religions. The place accommodates people from various backgrounds.
Great smaller gallery with a focus on ceramics. Never too busy and staff is always friendly. The special exhibitions are always great, showcasing art from internationally recognized artists.
A calm environment with historical, artistic and cultural exhibits. Relaxing music while you learn and discover.
Great place to visit and teach kids and adults about clay history
A wonderful well displayed exhibition of Venetian glass and ceramic from the 15th and 16th century.
The museum and the arts are beautiful but the old lady staff from gift shop is so RUDE! My mom bought a pearl necklace here but honestly I would not suggest anyone come here again.
Is a great museum, you need more than one day to look at everything
Nice little place with lots of items. I enjoyed the guided tour & the clay making videos.
(Translated) Unimaginable, this museum is rich in exhibits, and it is a good place to like to see art ceramics (Original) 想像不到,這博物館展品丰富,是喜歡看艺術陶瓷之好去處
A very diverse collection from different time periods and cultures. Modern and ancient. A great place to have a quick visit.
The museum was very interesting, it had many interesting sculptures in it. It also had lots of different pieces of ceramics in it, Don't let the size of the building its located in fool you on how packed it is. The only reason I gave it a four star insted of a five is because I felt that the price of adult admission was a bit to expensive. Admission for people aged 18 and under was for free, which was nice though.
It was great to spend time with my mom and look at beautiful antiques, It was 2 months ago so it was quite , just a few few more people
Unexpected moments in museum.
The Venetian exhibit was beautiful and lunch there was a delightful treat in their big airy dining room.
A superb collection.
Lovely Space for drop-in classes. This area is a little challenging for parking, if you can, I would avoid bringing a car - totally manageable, still.
Nice museum displaying items from different era and parts of the world.
Really nice museum but they have a plaque saying they are trying to be less racist. I don't like the virtue signaling. Either give their works of art or proceeds back to victims or stop with the empty talk wokeism
Great loved working with clay at the clay studio... fun for the little one
Excited
Love the collection of art here
Such a nice museum went and staff were nice made a little clay penguin .They are very clear with instructions.
The Gardiner Museum is a hidden gem in the city of Toronto. It has a collection of pottery, sculptures and other ceramics, spanning different places and times. It's not as big as the ROM across the street, but it is very interesting and definitely worth a visit.
Drop in classes tickets are not sold fairly. Online ticketing is flawed/rigged. Tried on multiple occasions. Countdown goes to 0 at 10am and the page already shows tickets as sold out.
I stopped in here on a whim while I was visiting Toronto. It's a cool little museum dedicated to the ceramic arts ranging from ancient indigenous American pottery to the modern. Unfortunately, they did not have a special exhibit going on while I was there, but there was plenty of things to see in permanent exhibits. Definitely worth checking out if you have a few hours to spare.
Convenient by public transport. Interesting shows all year round. Free WiFi. Free cloak room. Free trial pottery class twice a week.
Lovely Space for drop-in classes. This area is a little challenging for parking, if you can, I would avoid bringing a car - totally manageable, still.
(Translated) There are many beautiful ceramics. (Original) 아름다운 도자기가 많이 있습니다.
Drop-in pottery sessions (when they were available) were great. Lots of people though so need to book early.
Lots of great ceramic pieces. A diversion from the bigger museums.
Amazing ceramics collection! Classes and drop-in times are offered here with highly qualified teachers for people who want to try. Beautiful gift-shop and excellent lecturers.
I enjoyed the porcelain collection. As well as atmosphere inside, lovely cafe, gift shop and a bird clay experience!))
Worth visiting the place
Inflexible class policies
(Translated) Ai WEI WEI Special exhibition `` Unbroken '' during the Jardine Museum in Toronto "No compromise". It is currently a very famous and controversial Chinese contemporary artist, often causing issues in art galleries around the world. The ceramic "sunflower melon seeds" was one of the promotional spots exhibited by Ai Weiwei. The museum displays many porcelains from thousands of years ago, which is quite fascinating. It is highly recommended to visit.

Really good museum. When I was visiting the admission was free as well!
If you like ceramics, you will love this place. Good displays. Lots to see. If you have extra time, you should check this place out.
Gardiner Museum is a wonderful place to visit. Very fascinating and unique museum. Beautiful collections and interesting sculptures. There is an upstairs restaurant and food looks amazing.
A fantastic ceramics collection, very accessibly presented for all age groups. The tour guide was very insightful, informative and engaging. Friday late afternoon into evenings are also half price admission.
The family loved it...we got an opportunity to make things with Clay. And the museum had 3 floors and there was also a scavenger hunt for kids to keep them entertained.
very nice museum
Nice and clean
Overpriced for the collection is shows. There is no staff to enforce behavior of visitors. I witnessed a visitor talking on a phone with speaker on for 15 min straight. The only cashier present didn't do a thing even after I complained about it.
Inflexible class policies
This review is for the shop. Perfect service, very friendly staff who go out of the way to help me choose my favourite piece. they also wrapped up my purchase very well when i told them i was taking back home on a plane. thank you!
Extremely disappointed in the last TWO years Tree display *note the absence of "Christmas" Although clever and artistic the essence of the season was totally missing!
Visited during Nuit Blanche. The clay sculptures on display were amazing. Will be going back for a sculpting class.
Small but very well organized and interesting, ceramic, pottery and porcelain item
Never been inside, but the head statue outside is my favourite art piece in the city ????
Great museum. Once again fascinating how someone’s passion created such a beauty. Probably museum is more interesting for adults, than kids. But check online for their activities. We enjoyed family day clay master-class. If you wish you could take a rest in their restaurant located on the third floor. It has beautiful view to ROM. The staff is super friendly and nice! We’ve enjoyed our stay!
Nice small museum located not far from the ROM. Went on a friday after 4pm and admission is 50% off 4-9 pm on fridays which is a bonus. Although small it takes time as lots of beautiful things to look at and read about. Was not crowed and was able to take our time at a relaxed pace.
