As you can see it reaches an opinions average is basically the best one, and it is founded on a large number of feddbacks, so we may say that the evaluation is quite accurate. If there are many people who bothered to evaluate when they are satisfied, is that it works.
As you know, we don't usually stop to set tatings when these are positive and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or issue...
This Museum is classified in the category of Art museum.
Beautiful art works ranging from medieval to contemporary. I cannot really expand on the different types of art work present in this museum and compare it to others since I haven't been to much so my knowledge may be lacking on basis. However, I can say that I enjoyed visiting this museum and being exposed to the different styles and techniques of art. Bonus: The streets leading up to the museum were really colourful and are very picturesque! (My friends and I went during the month of August) Note: Not sure if this still exist but we left our belongings behind at the counter for bags and jackets (and were given numbers associated with our belongings). We, of course, took anything valuable like cellphones and wallet with us.
Absolutely one of the best art museums in the world! It's spacious and brings the finest artists to you. And there's often a special exposition going on - including some free to the public, like the Moving Dunes in the summer/fall 2018: see picture.
Great exhibition of all forms of art. Walking around should take about 2 hours to experience bits of every part of the museum
Le Musee des beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Arts) was a very cool trip and museum to see. If you love going to museums and seeing very interesting and different types of exhibits, this is definitely one not to miss. When I went, they had a very cool Picasso exhibit going on and a contemporary exhibit of black Canadians that was very cool as well. I would return to see what other exhibits they might have on my next trip to Montreal.
Great place! Learn a lot about the artists and the motives behind their pieces. Fantastic exhibits dating back to antiquity!
One of the best museums I have ever been. Friendly staff, plenty space inside so you can feel you're almost by yourself. Great activity in Montreal. Would suggest to do the permanent and temporary exhibition.
Beautiful permanent exhibit with some very notable works from Rodin, Did, Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Picasso, and more. Wide range of artistic periods from romanticism and baroque to impressionism and cubism. The visiting exhibits are also of consistently high quality. A membership is very good value at the MMBA
So large and lots of exhibits. You could easily spend the whole day here.
It's a typical museum. Lots of beautiful pieces of art and a whole lot of sculptures! The staff were super nice and very helpful :)
It was pretty good. Art is supposed to get a reaction and there were a few things that made me laugh, like the piece of drift wood with a rope tied to it, or the atv with a bunch of arrows in it. Then of course, there was some classic French art and photography, an exhibit on mummies (I never knew there were so many caskets to a mummy), and just some really interesting/not-every-day art. I prefer just regular sorts of art but I enjoyed the visit and would have been remiss not to have gone.
Must visit every time! It surprises me with different shows!!!!
We enjoyed this art gallery
The main galleries are all closed. Only a few contemporary art exhibits are open. Didn't feel like it was worth $24. Disappointed
very nice!
Great day, much bigger than anticipated. Will definitely come again. Nicholas Party exhibit was very very cool.
I love this place! You can fine among the most classic works from all around the world. The way they organize the work based on theme is also worth to mention. Overall, this place is worth to visit while in Montreal
Loved the experience. Stunning pieces and about four floors of just art. Love!
Very beautiful museum with amazing art! The day I visited it was free too.
Beautiful art gallery! Visited mid-week, so was pretty empty aside from school trips. A bit difficult to find your way around at first, but ok once you get past the first building (only passage to the other parts is hidden at the back)
Amazing experience, well laid out tour that follows all Covid-19 protocols, Loved the Jean-Paul Riopelle Exhibit, we learned so much and found it very fascinating!
The museum was really cool, it's exhibits were interesting and varied. I enjoyed how many of the art work were displayed and there was so much to see! It can be quite confusing to navigate and see the whole space as it spans across a few buildings, so pick up a map at the door and immerse yourself in art for the next few hours!
Great collection of work with nice spacing for many artistic era's and artistic movements. Glad it is open with in person visits.
The art in the museum was beautiful. They had all types of different galleries. I don't know much about art, so I will save you my opinion on anything lol. I can take you they had an exhibit by Thierry Mugler that was amazing. Growing up in the 80's, I can really appreciate the costumes from George Michaels videos and Vogue magazine covers. If the attraction is still there, it's a must see.
Worth the visit if you're in Montreal. Most exhibits are by Canadian artists, with some American exceptions.
Went there more than three time during past two years. Love it. The first Sunday every month is free entry. Have many events and activities so every time I would find something new. The shortcomings are that the arrangement of different buildings is confusing and some items of different times or types are put together. Would be better if there’s clear classification and arrangement.
Mummy exhibit is a must see to have a glimpse to the past. Montreal Fine Arts Museum is always very exciting.
We went there to see Riopelle’s Exposition, it was good, it has many rooms with the paintings. As we had already bought out tickets, we got in quickly. Very nice!
Really enjoyed the Chagall exhibit. It's only on until June 14. Really incredible and really worth going to see.
Super great experience at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts :). Social distancing rules were in place and it was possible to enjoy the exposition of Riopelle in a fun way!
Impressive exhibitions. The museum is huge.
Absolutely love the current exhibition “How long does it take for one voice to reach another” such a beautiful take on current world events and the power of the individual and the group. Recommend taking the time to visit!
Decent art museum worth 2-3 hours.
Cheap admission. Free coat check. Beautiful art pieces (attached some of my favorites). Special exhibit featuring mummies with immersive tools, like a collaboration with the video game assassin's Creed and visual displays of x-rayed mummy artifacts.
Recent visit here in September 2021. Was blown away. Monet, Picasso, Basquiat, and more! Get a chance to see The World of Yousuf Karsh? Do it. Before it's too late. Come face-to-face with Hemingway, and many more game changers, society shapers and celebrities
A lovely museum with a lot to see. From paintings to sculptures and Inuit art. It's also spread across four different buildings, so you never feel like there are too many people around you. Definitely a great place to visit if you're around!
Huge museum with lots of different paintings, sculptures from world famous artists. Each painting has a small note next to it, explaining the context and/or the topic of the painting, which is very helpful. The Bonaparte room as awesome. Plan 3-4hours there.
Truly amazing experience Plan atleast a half day visit or possibly the whole day if you can. Ecological section defntly ranks first for me. Here are some of the work which caught my attention and I loved it.
A great place to spend a few hours. Staff are very friendly and there are not too many people so it’s easy to keep social distance.
Pretty good, no fresh air, no sanitizer for the public, security ???????? I don’t call that security. Parking was a huge issue ???? Information service runs by teenagers ????♂️???????? They don’t know how to guide people, especially tourists.
Not a bad permanent collection which includes Picasso some impressionist and an early Gerhard Richter. The temporary exhibits are well curated. Staff is phenomenal and helpful. The guy I came across was engaging, well-versed in the Quebec and international art scene and we discussed some of the pieces and artists in great length.
I love visiting on my own, especially on the first Sunday of the month when admission is free (exclusion of the main exhibit)
Wide range of exhibits. Can spend hours enjoying the displays.
Great special exhibit on Thierry Mugler, if you missed it you should try to see it wherever it goes next.
Another great visit to MBAM. The other buildings were closed as new exhibits were being prepared. Took my fiancee for her first experience and we had a great time. The layout is great here and felt safe. We like how they always feature local artists.
I was a tourist to Montreal from NYC and I have to say that this museum was one of the best art museums I've ever been to. The exhibits were beautifully curated, the building itself was elegant, and the staff was so friendly and accommodating to non-French speakers. Not to mention that admission was free for students, even international students! There was SO much art! I spent a day there and I felt like I could have gone another day because I did not see everything. Would 100% recommend and return!
I did not have nearly enough time to see everything this museum offers, but everything I did see was great. Especially the Revolution dedicated Beatles showcase. Very well done!
As much as it annoys me that museums aren’t free for students and/or people under 25, I still enjoy the MMFA and I think it’s a beautiful museum that mixes Canadian contemporary art, Quebec art and different sculptures and paintings from the Renaissance times
Since the renovation, the work is brilliant! Amazingly curated, a must-visit!
Not happy at all. Came to see classics and nowhere on the website does it say that they closed off that whole section. I didn’t get experience I came for, I am not at all interested in contemporary art. I killed almost 2h looking for staff I was excited for and I don’t feel this was worth my money. What I liked the most is the building out of this whole experience
Love it! So much to see. It has expanded so much and the collections are wonderfully eclectic now.
Gorgeous museum, not a bad price for the whole day. Definitely go and check out the Mugler exhibit before it's gone!
Riopelle The Call Of Northern Landscapes And Indigenous Cultures Exhibition. Very interesting. (And a safe space.)
Always a pleasure coming here. One amazing exhibit after another.
Deserves 5+ stars at any time of the year! You get a good bang for your buck. For $24(taxes included) you get to see original works of Matisse, Picasso, cezanne, rodin etc as part of their permanent collection. Then they always always have something cool on exhibition. Last summer it was the showcase of impressionism and this October they have Yousef Karsh's portraits of many notable individuals on display (think Einstein, Roosevelt, Bardot). Last but not least, they currently have an interesting and meaningful section dedicated to themes of the current world (wink, well you know the big c) Completely overshadows many galleries/museums of similar nature in other major Canadian cities.
I came here for an arts conference and had a wonderful time. So much to see! I didn’t even get to all the exhibitions so I’ll have to come back. The shop is great too.
Spectacular museum in Montreal, it was the cultural highlight of my 4 day visit to Montreal. There’s a dispensary two blocks down crescent st, just saying.
Amazing place to know Canadian artists and their creations. Time spent is well worth it.
This is a great urban museum near lots of restaurants and shops. Try the museum's bistro for lunch.
Heard lots of good things about this museum and it did not disappoint. We spent around 2-3 hours here easily (free admission package). They have 2 buildings which offers multiple floors of exhibits. This museum has a variety of art so it can be enjoyed by many who may have different tastes.
One of the most visit locations in Montreal. You don’t want to miss it. It has lots of beautiful paintings and sculptures, and it is huge! I highly recommend to go early as you won’t want to rush through it
A very lovely place, filled with art from all over the world with many by renowned artists. Its been combined with many galleries and museums into a single accessible building complex and so makes the touring simpler. There is so much to see and enjoy especially with special exhibitions that are held. Definitely one of the must see in Montreal!
Great museum with pieces ranging from Picasso and monet to modern pieces. The exhibit at the moment is Egyptian mummies which i thought was great.
The museum is fascinating, very cozy, you can spend the whole day there and time will pass magically while you fill yourself with culture and art! I loved it!

The entire museum is so well laid out, it's incredible. Many great views of the city as you go up each pavilion and the art is well placed and thought out. It is just a very cool place, one could easily spend an entire day here. I couldn't get the WiFi to work on my phone but you shouldn't be in your phone much here anyway. It is easily one of my favorite museums I've visited.
Good stuff could be there for days with the amount of pieces there
There are many great collections here that include artifacts and paintings. If you like museums and galleries, I highly recommend going.
Good museum! The coverage of art from Gothic through Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Impressionism is nicely done. The selection is good, although few notable pieces in the collection. There are then some interesting additional fine arts and contemporary exhibitions. In particular the current exhibition on voice was excellent, especially the final room with choir voices. The building is also very impressive, with some lovely window spaces having a great views across downtown Montreal
Even though half of the museum was closed, I still managed to spend 4hs in there and cry a couple of times. Fantastic.
There are 4 buildings to explore for the price of one. I wish I knew this before spending too much time in the first building. All of the buildings are connected by the lower level. There is a good variety of art spanning several eras. I happen to go during the Picasso exhibition, which was very interesting. If you are in Montreal I highly recommend visiting this place.
Please take at least half day to tour the museum or do it 2 days. There is a lot to cover and some beautiful and very interesting presentations. 2 thumbs up for me. The Bistro had decent coffee and tasty pastry.
Not as much to see as we had hoped. But being the first Sunday of the month it was free so we're not complaining. The glass exhibit wasn't open, unfortunately. We enjoyed the Belle Epoch and the Pavilion of Peace section, and the Era of Annual Exhibitions. The Omar Ba exhibit was also interesting.
A must see in Montréal. Excellent collections and they're well organized too. You can easily spend a day in here and not notice it.
Amazing place to spend an hour or the whole day, ticket lets you in and out so we went out for lunch and came back. I couldn't find the prices on google so here posting the picture of the price board.
Highly recommend for those who love art! Mugler exhibit was amazing.
Very excellent museum with a wide variety of great art
The museum is spread over 5 building's.. so plan at least day to visit. At the moment Picasso exhibition is being displayed which is so inspiration. Definitely a site for everyone. kids would love the museum.
Terrible experience, after a rip off cab ride of around $50 from my hotel. Arrived at the venue to discover that you cannot purchase a ticket in person(very stupide). Only online purchases.... so, dumb....I pleaded with them and also mentioned I've been having many fraud issues with my online purchasing, thus, I had to deactivate it temporarily.... still no sympathy and I was refused entry. So, I was denied entry and was ripped off by a shady cab driver.... that was the experience in whole.... terrible display of tourism in this city....
I love art, been to a lot of museums, but did not like this one. Really don’t have much, much of what they had was meh (I know that’s subjected and just my opinion). My least favourite museum. Sorry no photos, nothing really captured my attention.
A must see for art lovers. Unfortunately some parts were closed due to covid but none the less a great experience. Walk-ins aren't allowed so make sure to check their website and book your tickets online. Tons of parking around even when it is in the heart of downtown
This museum is amazing! You will find an amazing collection of art (all kind). You will need more that one day to visit all the buildings.
The place was almost closed. Many of the exhibitions weren't open for a visit. We however were not told this at the time that we bought our tickets.
I went to see the Thierry Mugler expo and it was absolutely stunning! I only took off one star because it's a little expensive to have access to this museum. However, if an expo interests you, it's definitely worth it.
Lovely place!! Must visit for sure for any art fanatic. If you don’t already know, you can find original Group of Seven paintings here. Located right in the heart of downtown
Beautiful museum...always has been, hope fully always will be. At the mo a lot of the collection and building is being either renovated or installed..but still lots to see. The riopelle exhibition was truely amazing!
Lovely collection. I wish I would have had time to see it all! But the Pavillion for Peace is not to be missed.
What I like about MMFA is that whatever exhibition they always try to make you feel as you’re a part of that exhibition, part of the art, they make you travel in time, they always make you feel as if you were there. And this time was nothing less of that I was so touched by the amount of work, and the attention to detail in everything that my eyes were filled with tears. Apart from they exhibitions they have their permanent collection which is nothing short from amazingness.
Lovely! Enjoyed my time in this museum
Great museum with amazing works of art.
So much to see, new underground tunnels make it easier to get around to all the different buildings. Not overly busy unless you want your coat checked. Quiet and clean, great experience for anyone visiting the city for a few days.
This place has some interesting art. If you know a lot about art and have hours to kill....this is your place. If you don't know anything about art (like me), you'll have a better time at a science or history museum. But overall this is a nice place to spend a day but be warned that chances are you'll be standing there thinking.....I have no idea what I'm looking at.
Really interesting museum which has a bit of everything. For all tastes.
Amazing Museum. But two things. One it was hard to navigate around the museum because it was hard to find a map which they do have. Perhaps they should have a map in a more central area. Also, not against the museum but I was on a time budget and could have been there for over 3 hours. Which shows how the big the museum is. Also, this museum is free for anyone under 21 and is free for everyone they first Sunday of the month I believe. So come here if you are on a budget and need a place to chill for a day.
Beautiful museum with great special expositions
Worth it! As someone who's not an art geek, I ended up spending over 2 hours here - even though many areas were closed (I went on the first day of re-opening after the Omicron wave). There's a lot to see and be amazed by. In fact, the more …
Had a wonderful time! First Sunday of every month is free! Worth enduring the crowds!
This museum is near McGill Univ. We walked from Old Montreal to the museum and it took about 30 minutes. The museum appears to span 3 buildings so the opportunity to spendost of a day here is great. The entry was $16 Canadian dollars and that allows you to go into any part of the museum. There is a free coat check. There is a bistro with some good options at reasonable prices. (I had a delicious couscous salad for lunch.) There is also a restaurant for a more formal dining experience with servers. On Wednesdays the museum is open till 9pm. The bistro or cafe is closed in the evenings but the restaurant is open. I attended a special fashion exhibit, a retrospective on the work of Thierry Mugler. He is very well known in the entertainment world as he works with Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and others. I include images from the exhibit which was very well done and presented.
Great museum! There are 3 large buildings to visit. You will need at list 1 day to see all art. The ticket is valid for 2 days, because there are so much to see. Would definitely recommend visiting.
Truly amazing experience Plan atleast a half day visit or possibly the whole day if you can. Ecological section defntly ranks first for me. Here are some of the work which caught my attention and I loved it.

Amazing museum that is an absolute must to see. Four building spaning 600 years of art and culture. Mostly french, quebecoa, and first nations. My favorite id a critical and reflexive representation of contemporary art which is an ABSOLUTE must whether or not ur an art lover.
I really like this place but honestly there should be more going on in the museum of fine arts of Montreal!
Fascinating museum with a great blend of contemporary art and historical items. We spent a half day here, which is not even close to long enough - this is a day trip if you want to take your time and see everything. The “voices” gallery had a few arresting pieces and I’ll bet everyone can find something they love on display here.
I have always been in love with the MBAM. The musical guided tour through the smartphone application for the new wing is good. I just wished that the security personnel would tell people to quiet down. It was loud to a pint some people were talking louder than the music I had in my earbuds.
Nice place if you are an admirer of fine arts.
The last time I visited the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts was in Fall 2014 for a college assignment. I had the chance to discover the ''Van Gogh to Kandinsky'' exhibit, which was truly inspirational ! We are incredibly lucky to have such an amazing museum that hosts beautiful exhibits such as this one ! Something new to discover each time ! Go check it out !
Awesome collection Love the free admission the first Sunday of each month
When I was younger , I remember the museum having just paintings but now there are a variety of exhibitions. I particularly enjoyed going thru the different cultures and seeing the beautiful objects preserved through time. There was also the Yousuk Karsh photography section. What a remarkable and impressive collection of photos from politicians to actors to renowned scientists (Albert Einstein!).
Consider the membership pass. It may save your money especially for under 30 it is cheap. Nice museum with a lot of exhibitions. But as far as I can tell, they have a lot of permanent exhibition that do not change for years.
About half the buildings were closed for re installs. Additionally even though they said they would be open to 9pm about 50% of the floors that were open closed by 5pm. They don't tell you that before charging FULL price.
Great museum, really well organised, full of surprised. The best is probably that's it's FREE. So there are no excuses. Don't hesitate.
Parking is very hard to find but the museum is awsome! I went to see Love is Love by Jean-Paul Gaultier so this is only one room.
Went to the museum on a Wednesday for the later event. When getting there it seems only the paid exhibit was open, came all the way so decided to still check it out, and I was very impressed with the current exhibit! Was cool to see so many outfits and they were shown in great fashion. The customers service was really great and spoke both English and French smoothly. Would love to come back during a time when you can view their normal collection.
Always excited for the next exhibition. Better to go during the week. If you're under 30, take advantage of the VIP pass. (Alexander Calder exhibition)
This a wonderful museum right in the heart of Montreal. There were teachers and children sitting in hallways doing activities. People under 20 are free to enter.
Montreal's best museum - They have some really great permanent and temporary exhibitions. More than just fine art, there are nice collections of contemporary and modern art. The space is expansive and so there's so much to see, I'd say you probably need a few trips to really experience everything. I also really enjoy the architecture of the museum. It's cool to see the different eras fo the museum and the additions that have come after and how they all fit together while still being representative of their era. In the summer, there's also some great sculptures outside of the museum. I think the MBAM is a world class museum so if you enjoy this type of thing, then it's a must see in Montreal.
Fantastic.......I love this place Full of beautiful things
Some exhibitions are free. But is really crowded and sometimes noisy.
I did not have the chance to walk the entire museum but what I saw was nice, beautiful and entertaining
Very good museum with interesting exhibits, but a little confusing to navigate, even if you download their app and map or try to follow one of their self guided tours.
Wonderful collections, centrally located, easy to follow layout. Would need more than one visit to pore over everything.
So much content! We spent hours wondering though all the different museums. Lots of great couches to sit on. We enjoyed the range of art through out.
We spent hours here and didn't get through half of it. The full price tickets at the time were $24 each but I heard that Wednesdays after 5pm are only $12. The Egypt exhibit was fascinating, but I thought the architecture of the main building was almost as interesting as the art.
Their permanent collection is mediocre in my opinion. However, they do exhibit some interesting specials. Nice environment and good location. For a tourist, it’ll be ideal to enjoy a fresh morning hike up the mountain and come down to visit the museum. There are plenty of restaurants around for food after as well. If you plan to drive there, don’t!
Pretty fancy place with very accessible prices and discounts for under-30s. They had a massive exhibit that took a few hours to get through that displayed art from all over the world. And there was an entire section with what I’d consider to be the most respectful display of African art ever in a western museum. I have seen some downright disrespectful and colonial art exhibits that trivialize the complexity of African society but this was very much the opposite. I have a lot of respect for that!
It's very big and not enough time to see everything in one trip, but not too expensive either.
We went when the international arts section was closed for renovation, which significantly took away from our experience. It was bad timing as the exhibits we saw were good but few. Four+ floors in the Canadian arts section seems like a lot but the rooms are small. Temporary exhibits were interesting.
Amazing Art collection! Its free so all you have to pay for is the special exhibit. However you are able to donate which you should to support the museum's continue to have free art for everyone! Its very clean but can get busy on weekends.
This place is amazing. I've never seen a larger museum.
It's an impressive art museum, with free entry for visitors under 30 years old. That's what I call value! :) The museum is fairly accessible even with a stroller - there's a lot of stairs, but there's also always an elevator - somewhere... And there's a lot of staff to show you to the nearest elevator. We didn't find a nursing room, though.
Fantastic activity to do with students! The tour guides are amazing; the way they organized our groups, engaged our students and their know how made it a memorable experience. The exhibits are beautiful, and truly unique!
Not an artsy person but I fully enjoyed my time here. So much to see, so much to learn and very spacious. Like many/most museums, they have kept this place in tip top shape.
There are always fantastic exhibits every time I come.
One of the largest museums I’ve been too, there are many different galleries with amazing pieces. Not to mention the staff are very kind and helpful. It is a great place to visit in Montreal that you may even need to take two trips to really see it all.
It was nice museum in rainy day. It closes 5 pm
I love this Museum!! I go each time I visit Montreal and enjoy walking through the exhibitions. Thank you/Merci
visited the Egyptian Mummy series and loved it
Very interesting place! There's a lot to discover and learn, particularly about Quebec history, culture an of course art. For people who wants to learn about Quebec a bit more, an hands on, its the perfect place to go to.
This is a wonderful museum. I visited the Calder exhibition. It is the most comprehensive Calder exhibit I have ever seen. This is a user friendly museum, worth visiting both for their special exihbitions, and for their permanent collection. Parking on the street or multiple parking garages near by.
Great art collection. Shame about lighting design choices which made it hard to see the pieces without reflections.
Excellent collection. World-class museum. Nice mix of styles and eras.
Some parts were closed due to restoration but there is no discount on ticket. We are still paying the same amount. That is a minus. Another issue was at light orientations. Especially at the 3rd floor gallery (1800’s) lighting placement creates reflections on paintings which makes harder to see paintings on the upper row. Also on some statues there were shadows, which makes negative impact on receiving the artist’s message. I found quite small when you compare Quebec’s diversity and history.
Love this place! Great for a weekend of introspection. The permanent exhitions are really cool and interesting. Also, the seasonal ones are usually really interesting and from all over the world.
Wonderfully curated. Rarely disappointed except for the Riopel exhibit. The Canadian art collection is great and they feature smaller, emerging artists.
My favorite museum, hands down. I was able to see all 8 floors ( 4 each building) in 4 hours, but you can definitely finish in 2hrs. Just get the map and stick to your plan. My favorite floor was early modern art. And of course this cool monkey from the 70’s lol
Great experience, reasonably priced. If you're driving finding parking can be hard but you can get lucky and find parking in the streets. Now, let's talk about the museum itself. The most interesting collection I found interesting are those of Yousuf Karsh. His works are amazing and this museum has almost all of it. A must see if you do visit this place. I recommend
We had a great time. Really enjoyed the Calder exhibit.
One of the largest and greatest arts museum!
Wonderful museum with diverse art, from classic to modern. Worth a visit!
This was an eye opening experience, hopefully I can come back someday with my abstract paintings and people can actually visit me :)
Great collection of art pieces in beautiful Montreal downtown, unfortunately some sections were closed at the time of our visit, but still enjoyed a lot.
Amazing museum to visit. Wide variety of interesting exhibitions.
An enjoyable time at the museum exploring exhibits that focus on different disciplines within traditional and contemporary art forms. The main entrance is modern with plenty of natural light pouring in. The building is multiple stories high, and the interior architecture in itself is also engaging. Exhibits are informative and well put together. Well worth the visit.
Mummy exhibit was so packed with people that I wouldn't recommend going on a monthly Sunday-free day . Btw this particular exhibit was not free that day [ 24$ per adult ] . You had to sometimes look over heads at exhibits , with kids running around, lots of noise that sort of ruins the whole atmosphere of tombs, embalming, hieroglyphics... How about SILENCE.? Not a bad thing sometimes. I was disappointed that we didnt get to see under the bandages, the actual skin and bones of the mummies but it was explained that the mummy relics have to be preserved with less invasive handling. These mummies are on loan from the London,UK Royal Museum which I visited and remember seeing their mummies under the bandages which in spite of being macabre was informative with regards to embalming techniques.
An excellent museum with an ever evolving permanent collection and interestingly curated temporary exhibitions. The photos are of the Face-to-Face Picasso show in 2018. The museum consists of three interconnected buildings including a renovated church in Sherbrooke St with an underground tunnel joining them.
Such a great place to visit ! We loved every moment in this gorgeous museum!
A lot of renaissance art. Not my cup of tea.
Excellent museum. Be sure to grab a map though as it's quite a confusing layout. Also, they make you check your bag in a different line than tickets so have one person wait in the coat check line while the other gets tickets.
Depending on the show, of course, but a definite must-see on a rainy day. And I do quite like how their curators bring back more recent works by artists they’ve featured previously, such as the current piece by Ragnar Kjartansson.
I have always been in love with the MBAM. The musical guided tour through the smartphone application for the new wing is good. I just wished that the security personnel would tell people to quiet down. It was loud to a pint some people were talking louder than the music I had in my earbuds.
Too cramped at its original location, the Art Association strongly considered the idea of moving from Phillips Square to the Golden Square Mile, where the most of the city's financial elite lived at the time. They settled on the site of the abandoned Holton House, on Sherbrooke Street West, for the construction of the new museum. Senator Robert Mackay, the owner of the property, was convinced to sell the house for a good price.[12] A committee responsible for the construction of the museum was formed consisting of James Ross, Richard B. Angus, Vincent Meredith, Louis-Joseph Forget and David Morrice. Most members of this committee offered a considerable amount of their own money for the construction of the museum. This included a large donation by businessman James Ross. The Phillip's Square location was demolished in 1912, and is now a Burger King. A limited architectural design competition was conducted to select an architect among three architectural firms that were invited to apply. The museum committee selected the project proposed by brothers Edward Maxwell and William Sutherland Maxwell. Trained in the Beaux-Arts tradition, they proposed a building that catered to French taste of the time: sober and majestic. Work began in the summer of 1910 and finished in the fall of 1912. On December 9, 1912, the Governor General of Canada, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, inaugurated the new Museum of the Art Association of Montreal on Sherbrooke Street West in front of 3,000 people present for the occasion.
The museum offers a wide variety of artworks, ranging from modern art, contemporary art, abstract art, etc so if you're an art lover, it's definitely a great place to visit in Montreal. Give yourself a lot of time though since it will take at least one day to fully enjoy all the collections. My only problem is the organization of the pieces - it feels a bit cramped up and some pieces are quite difficult to see based on the fact that they are hung pretty high up on the wall.
This is a wonderful museum inside and out. I visited 3 exhibits and they were all wonderful. (I only have pics from one.)
Wonderful museum. Went to see the Picasso collection, and it did not disappoint. This museum has 5 buildings now, and I only had the opportunity to see one. Will definitely go back to see the other exibits.
Wonderful fine arts museum with old historic building and a modern new building across the street (where the main entrance is) that are connected to each other underground. Solid permanent collection and creative, compelling exihibitons. Nice cafe and restaurant as well.
This place has an outstanding permanent collection!
Very extensive collection of modern art that is worth visiting.
Big museum. It was very interesting. I went to see the Pompeii and Mapplethorpe, it was incredible.
I didn't go inside the building. I was only able to go around it and there were lots of arts available outside. They are really creative and beautiful. I can only imagine the inside. Maybe next time I visit Montreal!
Really nice museum with tons to see. Discovered new peace wing with it's 4 floors. Pretty nice. Going during off hours is more relaxed. ????
I think it is the best one in canada, the collections are very impressive. The place u could relax yourself and escape from the real world for a while. Art itself is the other parallel world , and much peace and quiet. I do enjoy the time be with Picasso, Monet...Rodin...the master peace is the media of the original artist, which is the insight world. Stay with them, everything suddenly becomes clear...such a wonderful, fantastic , elegant world....
This place is amazing! I loved face to face Picasso, past and present exposition! The collection and discovery exhibition was impressive and also free if you are under 31 years old! I spent there almost 3 hours until the closing time but really I wanted to stay there more! Impressive is the only word that can resume this museum!
I love this museum! I went here last year with my partner, and we couldn’t get enough of it. Absolutely fantastic ☺️
Great museum. If you are under 30 you can get a 35$ VIP pass which is tp3tally worth it. The price jumps up to 85$ after. Exhibitions well executed. Nice staff. They are kicking up their game by introducing more party like events. Similar to other cities. I feel magical in this museum. Can't explain it!
Pretty big yellow tree in front of the building for good photos.
Was able to visit this beautiful museum during our trip in Montreal. Admission was free for people under the age of 30, however, certain places within the museum were off limits. I really appreciated the art pieces displayed in this museum, as well as the varying exhibitions and collections available to look around. This place is great for anyone to visit - families, friends, or by yourself. There was also a coat-check that was free of charge where you could also leave your backpacks, making it much more convenient. Would highly recommend this museum to anyone visiting Montreal to adore the beauty within!
Great museum with an excellent and diverse collections of works from prominent artists. You will be impressed by what is on display. We were also surprised that being under 31 got us into the main exhibits for free (I've never been carded for my age on the US for anything besides alcohol). Seriously pleasant museum that you be happy to visit. We are used to the MFA in Boston and this is a much more calm experience where you still see works from excellent and renowned artists.
Great Museum. Always interesting exhibitions.
Superb museum with very cheap prices, especially if you are a student or under 30. If you have an interest in arts or history you can easily spend the entire day there.
It's always a fabulous time at the museum. I strongly suggest the impressionist exposition with major names has: Cullen, Rodin, Renoir, Monet, Dali, Picasso, and so many more.
Did not worth $24 , I have been to amazing museums that 3-4 hours are not enough, but this one did not have much to present
On Wednesdays you can go for half price after 5:00
Fantastic arts museum. It is a large complex, the building across the street is also part of the museum and they have an underground tunnel connecting the buildings. They have a lot of famous artists such as Picasso and Monet. Definitely recommended, but plan to be there for several hours to walk through the whole museum.
Great place to visit anytime of day!! They offer multiple temporary/permanent exhibits!!
Great art. Good atmospheres. There's section for Japanese, Indian, Pakistan, Sikh, African historical artifacts at the top.
This is one of the few presentable fine arts museums in Canada. Walking distance from McGill campus. Parking is rather expensive; most are within minutes of walk. Free admission for kids.
It's a huge museum divided in several buildings, each with different levels, it's like a maze. Each building are interconnected by an underground passage. If you can't find something, don't be afraid to ask for help. There are guides on each floor and at each exhibition hall to guide you to where you want to go. We were mostly interested to see the Egyptian mummies at exploring ancient lives which will only be available until February 2020. If you feel tired, there are benches, lounges to relax. Other exhibitions we saw were The Medieval Nave - Northern and Southern Renaissance, also Baroque to Rococo Napoleon gallery. I don't think we covered a lot but that was a good 3 1/2 hour, almost 4. Go early if you want to cover more. I took a picture of the museum guide.
This is the place to spend as much time as you have if you're an art lover and new to Montreal. Although we purchased the tickets to see the Egyptian Mummies, we spent most of the time on other exhibits which were excellent. We were particularly pleased to see the many contemporary art pieces at the museum.
I enjoyed my visit at the museum this year as well as last year visit. Good size museum and various collection. I like the changing exhibitions and more so I love the permanent exhibitions of fine are and modern design! A must see museum :)
Chagall exposition is superb, the audio guide is totally worth it . Take your time to see the visualization of the opera felling at the end . If you go to the kids zone there is also an interactive map of the opera you can explore
A bit expensive but worthwhile to visit. A wide variety of art and spacious.
Museum very mediocre and overrated, some exhibitions closed in summer 2021, which we had not been informed about before purchasing the ticket. The best part of the museum was the Inuit art, located on the 4th floor like a diamond. The amount and lack of a smile on the part of the museum guards made me feel like I was in a prison. I do not plan to visit this place again and I do not recommend it. Disappointing experience.
A very enlarged museum to say the least. The guides were always nearby and ready to answer questions. A very wide range of exhibits. An inspiring tour to say the least. A spectacular representation of Canadian works. Easily a whole day of observation required to see everything.
Amazing! I would go back here in a heartbeat. The exhibits were wonderful, well spaced, and even on a free busy Saturday over the holidays it wasn’t too packed with people. We only had less than two hours to explore the museum but managed to see everything… I would give yourself at least three hours to fully take it all in. One of the best museums I’ve been to in a while. The staff and facilities were wonderful and the architecture made for tons of Spectacular photo opportunities and selfie posts.
No dogs inside But we enjoyed the art shared outside
Definitely worth a visit. You can spend a whole day here or just pick and choose what you want to see.
Excellent art museum. The paintings are from various epochs, from Renaissance to modernity, lots of splendid ones. I recommend being there at least two hours before closing time.
Really nice museum. They cover many different mediums of art and the layout is very user-friendly. In case of cultural overload you can rest in many different spots throughout the museums and have gorgeous views of the city from the floor to ceiling glass windows.
You can spend a whole day here. A huge collection of art and history. Look for their special exhibitions
Amazing! 3 buildings connected underground, you can easily get lost in wander for hours. $15 and you’ll have access to everything except their main exhibit. Amazing deal.
Absolutely amazing museum that I could have spent all day inside. Even though I was moving quickly and barely had time to read any of the commentary printed next to the artifacts in French and English. A wide variety of artifacts from many different areas of the world spanning a huge timeline, this museum is a must see in the Montreal area. Prices are very reasonable too.
Big museum you'll be tired if you try to see everything in one day.
I am a member of the museum and go often to their exhibitions and workshops. Even though my daughter is now an adult we still go to the hands-on Art workshops. The exhibitions are always spectacular and the location in the heart of downtown Montreal is perfect.
*** MUST GO - BEST FINE ARTS MUSEUM IN CANADA *** this place is packed with over 4 hours or more of exhibits to enjoy! from contemporary art to historical art to modern art, this place has it all in one place! PROS • price point is well worth it • the artifacts are all genuine • lots of art pieces CONS • hard to find parking • always busy If you're a tourist in Montreal or just need something to do, this is the place to be!
Very good display.. love it.. very good experience.
Entrance on the first Sunday of the month is free. However only the permanent expositions are available. On the other hand, the permanent expositions are worth seeing for sure. You can expect to spend the whole day in there if you really want to. Would recommend and will go back.
beautiful museum, right up there with New York and Toronto. A beacon for arts with brilliant free community programs including art therapy with a licensed therapist, as well as visual art workshops such as sculpting and painting. Really a place that Montrealers should be very, very proud of. ????
Amazing exhibit on Thierry Mugler haute couture and classics like monet and Matisse. You can’t go wrong!
Amazing selection of works! Decided to AR tag their walls with my art ???????????????????????????? (first 9 photos)
Awesome museum, heavy on the Canadian artists, but great nonetheless. The Mugler exhibit was amazing!
Superb museum... with an impressive permanent collection and world-class temporary exhibits.
This is a spectacular museum complex, among the best I've ever visited. The haute couture exhibit (Spring 2019) was spectacular and deeply engaging. The permanent exhibits were also very fine: we particularly enjoyed the household furniture selection. We spent about four hours in the museum and only skimmed the surface.
Cinema, the sculptures and the festival de Quartiers Dances are awesome.
A definite must if you are in Montreal. It is free for anyone under 31 and between 31 and 65 it's around 20$CAD. The permanent exhibit is distributed in four buidlings, each of which follow a specific theme: Quebec art history, World Historical Art, Contemporary art and others. There are temporary exhibitions always so better check in their website what it is to see if it's worth paying the extra or not.
Spectacular museum in Montreal, it was the cultural highlight of my 4 day visit to Montreal. There’s a dispensary two blocks down crescent st, just saying.
This museum was absolutely great. Nice collection of different artists including Canadians and Europeans. Contemporary, Early and modern art exhibits. Surprised to see two beautiful pieces of Picasso’s work here. Due to some renovations only three out of two buildings were available and it was worth visiting.
A great museum with some of the finest art collections. Ruebens, Picasso, Dali, Warhol. One of the most visited art museum in Canada. To appreciate all the artworks you need couple of days in hand.
This place is a gem!!! Located in the heart of downtown, I got to immerse myself in culture and explore my own views through the lense of the artists. It was refreshing to an activity other than taking yet another walk with a friend
There is SO much to see and learn about, much more time consuming than any museum I've been to.
The temporary exhibits are very well put together, though often over crowded. The museum has a wonderful way of incorporating a 4D experience with video and display. The permanent exhibits are as always an excellent way to spend an afternoon.
The Museum has some interesting exhibitions and pieces, totally worth the visit! "Chagall: Colour and Music" was amazing!
The ticket is expensive, but the museum has a good Egypt mummies exhibition
A superb place to visit in Montreal. Very interesting, high-quality, world class collections. You should wear comfortable shoes, and you easily will spend a whole day admiring the art works of worldwide great painters, sculptors, and all kinds of art works.
what a wonderful museum !! could definitely spend all day here. a great rainy day excursion !!
Excellent museum! So happy we got to spend the day there ????
It is free for people 15-30 years old and on top of that it is a massive network of 3 buildings making it a must see and a easy way for tourists to burn a couple hours.
I enjoyed this museum, lots of things to see here. Definitely coming back! Thank you for having us!
One of my favourite places in montreal with a great collection of arts and temporary exhibitions
Bright and spacious exhibition space and with impressive collections.
Amazing exhibits for a very fair price and they even have free wheelchairs for those with mobility issues
Beautiful collection. Amazing place.
Can’t wait to visit again .
I think this is the best museum i have visited in Canada. The works of some of the greatbmasters of modern arts are on displays here, from Monet, Gaugin, to andy warhol. Also features a few classical artworks and some from.medieval period. So basically it has a little bit of everything.I'd love to come again on my next visit to Montreal. Needless to say, wear proper shoes as it is quite big area.
I was thoroughly impressed from the moment I entered; staff were so helpful & friendly in French & English. Coat/bag check included with entrance. The Jean-Paul Gautier exhibit is well presented & it's such a great to get to see his work so closely
Wonderful Canadian art in the standard collection. The limited exhibits are worth the visit — Riopelle was presented when I visited.
Amazing art on display. Total of five buildings. Dating back to 1400's and so forth. There is lots to see. We spent over 2 hours there. They also have permanent and tempory displays or exhibits. You can pay separately if you want or one price to see it all. The store lacks any luster. Some places the lighting was harsh. There is a coat check and restaurant. You can stay as long as you want. Pictures are allowed with no flash. Amazing Opportunity to see some great art and well known pieces.
A must-go if you're a fan of early renaissance/baroque art! Use to go there almost weekly before the pandemic. Absolutely love the atmosphere and the art!
Post-pandemic advise: If you are under 30, please take advantage of the affordable membership giving you unlimited access to the museum and more! *pre-pandemic picture from the night at the museum event. Was fun!!*
Expensive entry fee. Beautiful building. Clean restrooms, with several throughout the building. Excellent Pompeii exhibit. We also enjoyed the Napoleon exhibit. Stairs or elevators to go between floors. Stools to borrow and carry with you to sit as needed, although benches located throughout. Staff was welcoming and friendly.
Great place to stop and experience some local, and international culture. A bit confusing with the various buildings and where to enter, but found our way around.
This place is amazing. I did not realize they have so much good stuff. Even if you live in Montreal, it is fun to be a tourist in your own town. GO check it out!
My high school teacher always talked about the Musée in Montréal and 40 years later, I finally got here! It's as nice as he said it is. But don't try and see the whole thing in one visit, unless you're a 'skimmer.' I needed two and it was plenty worth it!
Most of the places were closed inside the Museum. It says that it's fine art Museum. The exciting part was then EGYPTIAN Mummies. There was a VIP Party going inside so one of the Floor was not open. I would suggest to get some information before going there and check if most of the things are open or not. Consider that the BOURGIE was closed for public. And also, on Wednesday it is open till 9 PM. But at 5.00 PM, they closed few of the rooms. Please check with them before going as the ticket is about 24$ for an adult.
Depending on the show, of course, but a definite must-see on a rainy day. And I do quite like how their curators bring back more recent works by artists they’ve featured previously, such as the current piece by Ragnar Kjartansson.
The Museum was magnificent. Every corner was filled with an individual and unique work of art, unseen in the traditional museum setting. I had mainly stayed in the more modern building, but the other two adjacent buildings are easily accessible from tunnels underground. The art was profoundly interesting and mind boggling at times. I guess that's what happens when you go right after participating in the recently legalized form of recreation in Canada.
Beautiful collection of fine art... joy, relaxation and knowledge... don't miss it..
Very extensive museum where everyone can find something for themselves. Well, maybe less interesting for kids. It has several buildings and we spent more than 2 hours then, and could have spent more, but got too hungry. You can renter the same day though. The restaurant was closed when we were there. Pretty nice museum shop. Was a bit too cold in the building. I wish they would have requested all passengers to have vaccination pass. I would recommend checking the map of the museum first and starting what interest you the most, cause otherwise you get pretty tired by the end. The museum had art from around the world (my least favorite part probably) on the top floor of one of the buildings, then several contemporary exhibitions, exhibition about saving the planet, one with art from employees of the museum, and a lot more. I would come several times to explore fully.
I always enjoyed visiting this museum! do not miss it if you are in Montreal or you are travelling there. Lots of things to visit and learn!
So cool! Ive been there twice, but love it both times. My interest is in fashion so its always so fun when they have fashion exhibits. Would DEFINITELY recommend to anyone into fine arts! Worth your money!
The family workshops are really fantastic. Can't recommend more.
Really good museum and well worth a visit. The views of downtown Montreal from the upper levels are really great to experience too. The Calder exhibition was great too.
Not enough time to see all 5(!) buildings. Current mummy exhibit is worth checking out alone!
Great museum and the entrance was for free last time I visited it!
The most expressive art in all Montreal. From old to new to future to present, every piece (or should I simply say monument) is extremely detailed and amazing.
There's so much to see here! If I hadn't gone off looking for a phone charger I could spend the entire day here. There's a multitude of rooms with different types of art, from all Jesus/religious symbolism to modern art and an exhibition including a Dyson vacuum. I followed a couple of the tours featured in the mobile app. These were a collection of pieces to direct your attention to, and some of them I couldn't find, but it was fun to play a loose form of scavenger hunt and look at pieces with the added context provided by the app.
The biggest museum in Montréal. Good collection of each and every article related to arts and creation. Well managed museum with separate section of painting, sculpture, Woodcarving, metal and glass works, netting and accessories. Québec history of fine arts and culture can be learn here. Moreover, it gives a clear picture of global evolution of arts and craft.
A must see for art buffs! Perfect for a rainy day - we spent about 2 hours here and still didn’t get to finish all there was to see. The special echo exhibit was phenomenal!
Beautiful museum, inside and out. The galleries on show were pretty nice, varied in theme and style. Can't give more than three stars since about half of the museum is closed for restoration and/or COVID. We saw everything in about 90 minutes, taking our time.
Attended the Africa/Picasso exhibition and was floored at the expanse of the art, various mediums used for the displays and the size of the entire exhibition. I will be returning to see it all again. I attended opening night and the musical show was wonderful also!
It's always a fabulous time at the museum. I strongly suggest the impressionist exposition with major names has: Cullen, Rodin, Renoir, Monet, Dali, Picasso, and so many more.
Very good art museum for both North American and European art. Well worth seeing
One of my favourite places in the city. I visit MBAM every time I'm in Montreal. From the regular collection to the special exhibits, there is always something new and interesting to see. Excellent curation.
Wonderful exhibits and art collections.
Very nice museum, many great exhibitions that include different culture and medium! I go there almost once every month. I don’t want to put too many pictures to spoil the art works but here are some of my favorite there
Very nice museum, many great exhibitions that include different culture and medium! I go there almost once every month. I don’t want to put too many pictures to spoil the art works but here are some of my favorite there
Was a great venue, with a lot a bunch of exhibits. Kids were engaged and found it very interesting.
The new exhibit on sound with choral singers blew me away.
The entire museum is divided into different parts. Reserve more time (and energy) if you want to take a look at each and every exhibition. Probably need more than 3 hours. It's a nice place for modern arts especially, not much historical stuff though.
Big place! Four museums in one! You going to walk a lot! Wednesday the museum closes late, is a good day for know all the museum. (I took me 4 hours)
Love it, but one need lots of time. Its not a quick trip thing.
Very nice collection of art exhibit. Easy to navigate.
Fantastic museum! Only complaint would be the Allotted time slots during covid aren’t very long and the flow can be a little confusing
Very good museum. Nice exhibits
The museum is as good as ever, but now it cost 16$ to go in if you're 18+... It used to be free, which is kind of annoying but... Still as pretty as ever.
How could you not like this place. Great views of the city and beautiful art work. Not too busy on a late Sunday afternoon
Very nice place to see exhibition of arts
Great place to bring kids that enjoy learning. Plus they have workshops for kids
Not fine at all, 19 dollars to stare at photos crazed hobos made, I don't call an African American man with rubber gloves taped to him fine art.
Great exhibition spaces, with brilliant service too. The gallery once hosted what is by far one of the best fashion exhibitions ever produced, the 'Thierry Mugler, Couturissime' show. The museum is well within walking distance to everything, but parking can be challenging. Do book if possible too.
Two buildings located on opposite sides of Rue Sherbrooke Street connected by an underground tunnel. Guests must enter through the east building. Nice museums but space management could be better. Some smaller rooms are tightly packed with display items whereas some larger rooms are fairly empty. The Napoleon Exhibit is now on for a limited time (February 3, 2018 to May 6, 2018).
It was nice museum in rainy day. It closes 5 pm
Excellent venue. Very well laid out. Food and drink options are available and very tasty.
Loved it! This is definitely one of the best art museums I've been to. It's enormous! We were there for many hours and I still think we didn't see everything. It's almost entirely accessible, and I saw people in wheelchairs. I highly recommend visiting it. The museum staff members are friendly and helpful.
Fabulous experience. Amazing art work and an excellent exhibit regarding sound. Very powerful
They have a nice Chagall exhibit going on right now.
Absolutely beautiful and fascinating exhibition! I saw the How Long Does It Take for One Voice to Reach Another temporary exhibition and it has some fabulous pieces of art. My favorite was the unison of 40 voices and you could go near a specific speaker to hear one particular choir singer but when you go back to the center, you can hear the harmony of voices instead of a single voice. The Yousuf Karsh photography exhibit was fantastic too; all the portraits were beautifully taken and such stunning works of art.
Amazing place, lots to see. The building in it self is spectacular
Very good museum, 3hours and more to visit the 5 buildings and free WiFi inside ^_^ All styles are there: Canadian art, contemporary, the Masters of Arts, design exhibition, and African/Asian/Mexican arts too.
One of the best museum's I've been too. Very warm and cozy colors. Great exhibition of paintings.
Terrific. Beautiful art, thoughtfully displayed and written about. The building itself is gorgeous as well. Free coat check, discount for 20 something's. I adored this place. The only downside is there's too much to see in one day. Come early and come caffeinated.
I love this museum! I went here last year with my partner, and we couldn’t get enough of it. Absolutely fantastic ☺️
We really enjoyed the open exhibits, but half of them are closed at the moment. A bit disappointing, but we still managed to spend the majority of the day here exploring. The staff is friendly, the art is beautiful, and the historical artifacts are stunning.
Nice museum with a large selection of art. Wasn’t too busy either.
Great place, you can spend the full day in there. Check the website for kids activities.
Such a wonderful experience spending time at this Museum while we were visiting Montreal. You could easily spend an entire day or afternoon here. The museum is spread out over various buildings which are all connected internally. Each space is carefully designed to enhance your experience and enjoy the art within these spaces. The architecture itself is beautiful. By far one of the best museums in Canada with fabulous artwork and exhibits to browse through.
Attended the Thierry Mugler Couturissime exhibit. Fantastic!
Excellent architecture and expositions. It's a worldwide quality museum. A must visot in Montreal.
What a great museum with so many different styles and topics. It's huge and you could easily spend a whole day here.
Pretty nice museum with a good art selection
Fantastic arts museum. It is a large complex, the building across the street is also part of the museum and they have an underground tunnel connecting the buildings. They have a lot of famous artists such as Picasso and Monet. Definitely recommended, but plan to be there for several hours to walk through the whole museum.
This Museum was very clean and bad very nice artwork and pieces displayed. It was free to view the majority of the pieces in the museum but for some of their bigger exhibitions there is a fee. There is no parking as for the majority of Montreal so I recommend walking if possible. Also, the street that the museum is on is very beautiful.
Great exhibit of Mugler’s work from the 80s. The rest of the gallery is good as well. High quality museum worth the trip.
Probably by favourite museum in Montréal. Worth spending several hours here. Entry is timed to spread out visits to keep things Covid safe. There is an expansive collection of art and artifacts spanning the ages and the continents. The building itself is stunning and provides gorgeous views of the city. An excellent rainy day activity.
Nice place to visit, but would like to see of classical paintings and not contemporary art.
Amazing building. Great art pieces all around. Ticket can be bought across the road
A thoughtful and well-designed museum that had some stunning pieces. Appreciated the multiple floors that showcased a wide variety of Canadian art and art from throughout the world. Definitely could take some time to explore the entire museum!
Loved the featured fashion exhibit on Balenciaga!! The museum is located very central Montreal in a historic building. Although the building is small, there are three levels. The two main feature exhibits are a fair size, and if you go after a certain time (I think 5pm) entrance is half price. You will still have plenty of time to complete the museum.
This place is amazing!! I loved every minute of it! ❤️
Fantastic museum will tons of art to see, and something for everyone! It was a gift to see a Kent Monkman painting in person. I would absolutely return when I’m in Montreal next.
Beautiful museum I had a great time it was so nice to admire the art. From previous reviews someone mentioned to bring water and a snack. Please know that you are not allowed to eat or drink in spaces where there is art so basically only on the first floor when entering. There is a lot to view I never looked at the entire exhibit as I got extremely tired but it was beautiful.
It's a very a great experience and have so many interesting exhibitions
The mummy exhibition is unbelievably amazing. It is a must-go for those who likes mummification.
We had a great time. Really enjoyed the Calder exhibit.
The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is an excellent place to experience art and have a leisure afternoon at (The first Sunday of every month is free for all museum goers). The entrance hall is stunning and the indoor sculpture garden (with a glass ceiling) is an excellent place to read or spend an afternoon with a friend. The museum cafe and shop are also worth a visit and rival any quintessential museum cafe or shop. There are a number of excellent permanent exhibits on Canadian and Indigenous art, especially in the auxiliary pavilions. The museum also holds an excellent rotation of temporary art exhibits that showcased in major museums across the world. *Covid only: The ticketing process is online and visiting the museum was a very fluid experience even with restrictions. You need to register online to visit and there are only a few sections of the museum open at a particular time.*
Amazing collection of fine arts from lots of different cultures! I wished I had more time to spend here - there are quite a few galleries across 3 different buildings. Saw the Chagall exhibition, was not disappointed.
Nice museum for a major city and a participant in world class loan and visiting collections. At the time of our visit, a great Picasso retrospective was on display with a strong Africa bent / masks.
Great museum! Even got the membership card
Super big place, lots of amazing pieces and the gift shop is super cute! A huge tourist attraction and really opens your eyes to the beautiful culture of montreal!
Nice museum, especially for modern Canadian painters and Inuit sculptures, besides temporary exhibitions
Amazing. So worth a few hours of your time - both inside and out. The Picasso En Face-A-Face was incredibly enlightening about the influence of indigenous cultures on his artistic expression.
Black and white photography by Yousef Karsh was beautiful. Sound exhibition was also intriguing. Nice afternoon in Montreal.
Very lovely experience and collection of art, a must do if you're in the area
We arrived a bit too late, and only got one hour to explore. Still I found this museum very interesting, especially the modern arts section. You do need at least 2 or 3 hours to fully appreciate this place.
There were plenty of artworks all over the places. I could see many sculptures and artworks not only paintings. But in my personal opinion, they were too many. I could not concentrate at some point because there were too many things within my view. I was lucky of no enter fee. So that is good. Have fun!
Fantastic museum. The Fashion exhibition was stunning. A great place to walk around with someone you care about. Even when crowded, it's a quiet atmosphere. The book shop has a great selection or resource materials.
I went there 2 times. And I liked it very much. The second time it was the exposition of the french designer “Thierry Mugler” who is also known and famous for his perfume of all times: “Angel” with a star shape, and also the new perfume : “Muse” which is really strong and charming. The exposition was mostly his dress designs and photos of him and the models or stars wearing his designs. He designed for many famous singers, like Lady Gaga, Madonna, ... The show was awesome.
Good museum that explores contemporary and historical themes through art. Many areas to explore would come back to check out again.
Got to see the Picasso exhibit and was truly a wonderful experience. The staff are helpful and guide you in the right directions. Was worth every cent paid
I'm ashamed to say that I've been in Montreal for 9 years now and this was the first time I went to this museum. Let's start by the staff. I loved them, very welcoming and doing more than just answering questions, giving advices too. Now up to the collections. A lot of stories to learn about all sorts of cultures. Some places are so beautifuly done and appeasing that you just want to stay there and wonder. Overall, great visit. I highly recommend. Next time I'll have to try the guided tour.
Pricy and half price day only covers main exhibit. A museum is paid with tax payer money and should be more accessible than this. Too pricy and free days don't cover all. But the exhibit was fun. For more, see my fb posts on adventuress_ali
Had an awesome time here. Great, heart touching exhibitions. Nicely curated.
The collection of modern art is fantastic! I also loved the temporary exhibitions, really great curated.
The collection of modern art is fantastic! I also loved the temporary exhibitions, really great curated.
extremely interesting exhibition, even their permanent collection is really cool. I wish i wasn't too tired that day, I would've finished the visit. would go back again a couple of times before the end of this exhibition. I love this place already.
Their traveling exhibitions are usually really well done. We did wish that they would have more classical art to see. For the most part the permanent exhibitions are very modern art focused. Which was disappointing since you can go down the street to the modern art museum if that is what you are looking for.
Amazing experience! I'm so glad that I visited the Montreal Museum of fine-arts! My t's a wonderful experience.
If you're young you can get in for free to check out multiple floors of Canadian art. It's great!
One of the largest art museums I've been to. Very cool how it connects buildings under the road. I recommend planning on covering separate parts on a trip so you can absorb it all without getting tired. The collections on levels 1-3 are incredible. Keep track of the short term exhibitions as they often are must sees.
Not just fine arts but so much more.
5 buildings all connected underground, come ready with comfortable shoes and time. worth the $23.00
Great museum although the layout can be a bit confusing at times. The exhibits are spread out through multiple buildings and floors. The permanent collection is really neat and they do a good job keeping things fresh. Don't miss the art outside the buildings as well. Free admission for people under 30 is an absolute steal!
go to see Chagall temporal exposition is a must see. The entire museum has such bautiful pieces
Awesome experience , several halls with different artist
Displays were excellent well laid out and organized. Collection was very well organized. Lighting in several rooms is terrible to the point where the art itself is hard to see. Bulbs used were either too harsh, blinding, and other rooms too dark. See the photo of the Dali, the light was gleaming off the oils. The lighting needs to be redone in many rooms.
A little bit expensive ($24 for adults, no concession prices for older people which is unusual) but still a good museum to visit. Usually no "blockbuster" temporary exhibits but I always find the Stewart pavilion/wing the most interesting as this contains a fabulous collection of decorative arts (furniture, lighting, textiles, jewellery etc) which traces all the trends since Victorian times, including art deco, art nouveau and more modern pieces, especially Italian design from the 60 & 70's. On my last visit, I noticed for the first time a large collection of pre-columbian artefacts that I must have missed on my previous visits. The restaurant was inexplicably closed on the Saturday that I visited, although a local resident had recommended it to me as having an interesting menu.
I spent 4 interesting hours wandering through the museum discovering many Inuit, Canadian and Quebec masters. The Ben Weider's Napoleon art collection is very interesting as well. This museum is a must see for all art lovers visiting Montreal.
Spectacular museum in Montreal, it was the cultural highlight of my 4 day visit to Montreal. There’s a dispensary two blocks down crescent st, just saying.
Spent almost 5 hours wondering around this place. It’s one of my top favorite museums around the world. I loved the exhibitions going on and the variety of art. The seatings and couches throughout was amazing. So inviting and they want you to sit and contemplate the art. I love it. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back soon because I didn’t even get to see it all.
Excellent fine arts museum with a vast and interesting collection. The app is helpful to navigate.
Loiter around this lovely museum! The Musee des Beaux Arts is always a fun place... even with an irritating pandemic lurking. The museum is currently closed to the general public to slow the spread of the covid19 BUT it is open if you made reservations in advance to visit. (A sympathetic security guard let us make a reservation from the foyer today as it was a special child-free day for us.) There was a funky German graphics exhibit that was sold out (because we were trying to buy last minute tickets in the doorway) and some other stuff but we wandered through the permanent exhibits and still discovered new stuff. Most importantly, we saw Chaki's haunting installation of the Shoah. The Holocaust must never be forgotten and Chaki was able to process it in a weirdly mesmerizing way. We also saw happy, funny sculptures and paintings. The guards were helpful as the Covid19 directional paths were confusing for me and they guided me onto the right walkway before i sent up flares. Remember to make a reservation in advance and be prepared for at least three hours of wandering. The Musee des Beaux Arts advertised that they now have an app to help us enjoy our visits.
Everyone that we encountered on staff were friendly and helpful. We visited around 2:30pm and here were no crowds. The Picasso Face-to Face exhibit was really great. Definitely check out the gift shop before you leave!
The museum has a wide range of art spanning across different time periods and continents, and the collection is spread out across five buildings (called pavilions) interconnected at the underground level. I especially enjoyed the level that had the impressionist and post impressionist paintings. There was a temporary exhibit featuring Thierry Mugler's designs when we visited. The museum is overall a very manageable size and appropriately done in a few hours.
Great experience, but you never ed more than 3hrs to go through
I like this museum but you need to come aware of the kind of art you will get to see here. This is not a nature or history museum but rather a contemporary arts one.
Kinda weird. First time going into a fine arts museum. They had some weird pieces of art but I guess that's not my cup of tea.
Thanks for the free event every December. We get each one always something we enjoy, very different though.
Fabulous experience. Free 1st Sunday of the month.
Our large extended family (10+ people, including children aged 3-13) visited yesterday for the first time. Wow! We were blown away! The museum itself is expansive and covers 4+ buildings, each with several floors. We definitely did not run out of things to see! The exhibits and sitting areas were immaculately clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. Entrance is free for those under 30 years old for the permanent exhibitions.
One of my favorite places, the museum is super instructive and holds interesting variety of art in the permanent collections. They also host really fun events. If you're 21 and under make sure you go!! It's free for you
While the arts presented were really great, it could do with more inventory.
The ecological exhibition wasn't as impressive as I expected. Service is superb though.
We went to see the Thierry Mulder exhibition and it was amaaaaazing. Spectacular. A bit pricey but definitely worth it. Would return for sure!
The guide was boring and made the paintings boring but it looks like a meuseum lots of arts. Recommend people that actually LOVE arts. If your not in to it you’ll get bored with headaches like me TRUST. I guess for me it’s 24 bucks down the drain
Great free exhibit! Beautiful, thought provoking art. The permanent displays are the ones that are included without a fee. Easily accessible. Elevator for every floor, so stairs are optional, which is great for those with less mobility. The walls of windows by the staircases on every floor show sides of Montreal we don't take the time to stop and admire, not to mention the street art it happens to highlight. All in all a great experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed this museum, and it took almost a full day to visit - which I didn't expect, it's a much larger museum than I imagined! Alongside its permanent exhibitions - which are very well and interestingly curated - it had a lot, and I mean a LOT, of temporary exhibitions, each one more interesting than the other! Out of the temporary exhibitions I really enjoyed Ecologies: A song for our planet exhibition. But again, their permanent collection is a must do, it's an interesting and bold curation! Unfortunately, 2 of the pavillions were closed for renovations, but to honest I don't think we could have visited everything in just one day as we're the type of people who spend time on each work of art.
I spent 4 interesting hours wandering through the museum discovering many Inuit, Canadian and Quebec masters. The Ben Weider's Napoleon art collection is very interesting as well. This museum is a must see for all art lovers visiting Montreal.
The Mummies exhibit was very informative and some the exhibits on level S2 were exciting, particularly Omar Ba's oeuvre.
It is never a dull time at the museum, at least not for me! I went to see the Egyptian mommies exhibit and found it absolutely fascinating! It runs until February so I encourage all history enthusiasts to go and discover it; a first of its kind in North America. It doesn't disappoint. I love the MBAM!!
Are you in town for a week or only for the day? This place is a must if you want to see what Montreal have to offer. Big and free admission for those age under 30 for the permanent exhibition. You only need to pay if you want to see their limited time exposition, which is always worth it. My favourite was Mapplethorpe! Go and enjoy.
Great indoor activity!! Had almost 6 floors of exhibitions. Each floor with different styles and themes. Spent a good 3h walking around and taking picture.
Good experience except for the security guards. One of them was quite rude.
The general exhibit is varied and filled with great works from many periods. They have pieces from Warhol, Picasso, Di Chiroco, and many other greats. As well as nice pieces from Native American and Quebec artists. A really underrated museum in North America. Worth a visit.
So much style! Cé magnifique! We toured here as part of a larger group and it was a real treat to see so much artwork and creativity in such a short period of time. Gives artistic inspiration!
Amazing, super cheap and I could spend all day here. The indigenous art and the Karsh exhibitions were standouts
I wasn't sure if this would be the kind of place I would enjoy or feel welcome at, but wow! It's really nice, there are a number of beautiful exhibits that will surely spark up conversation if you bring a date. There's a cafe too which has great coffee. I had a great time.
Each floor is amazing. Check all five floors . Didn't check out the pavilion. Bit too much to absorb in any given short visit.
Amazing collection, very culturally aware and well organized. Further, the curators have mixed the past and present in a way that maintains viewer engagement to such a wonderful degree. Love this place!
Beautiful expositions. Loved the cabinet des curiosités. Thanks for participating in the first Sunday of the month event throughout Quebec which allows anyone to visit some museums for free.
I enjoyed this museum, lots of things to see here. Definitely coming back! Thank you for having us!
Such a beautiful museum, or really collection of museums. So many gorgeous buildings, of differing architectural styles, to explore with so much variety in art. One visit really isn’t enough. The museum gift shop is a delight. I’m a big fan of modern art museums and this one was a fantastic mix of both contemporary and classical art. Not to mention, again, that the spaces themselves are just lovely to walk around and relax in.
U20 gets in for free, and tickets are relatively cheap for young adults as well. Large exhibits that are still well curated.
Great day at the museum. Excellent mummy exhibits!
Wonderful fine arts museum with old historic building and a modern new building across the street (where the main entrance is) that are connected to each other underground. Solid permanent collection and creative, compelling exihibitons. Nice cafe and restaurant as well.
Very good permanent collection, but not all open yet
Good collection. But be aware their printed tickets which are really sharp. I CUT MY FINGER BY THAT TICKET. At least their first aid package have good supply
Admission grants access to all exhibits, including the special time limited exhibit at the moment.
Riopelle is a spectacular exhibition! Precautions are being taken to ensure the safest visit for all museum goers! The videos, pictures, sculptures, masks etc. helped embellish the experience and I have been left with a deep appreciation of the indigenous people and their contribution to Canada's history through the eyes of a great master and his friends who made this exhibit possible. The canoe making video was a delight to the skill of a master indigenous craftsman!
Beautiful museum with a quite impressive permanent collection which is free to visit. I went to the Picasso exposition they held 1-2 months ago, it was very well displayed and the flow of the exposition was neat. The museum itself is very luminous, clean and inspiring. I love coming here and am a proud VIP member of the MBAM.
This is a must-see museum in Montreal. The expansion of its premises a few years ago helped to bring its rich collection out of the vaults, but, in my opinion, the museum will have to expand more to accommodate works that tend to be displayed in a cramped setting. Much of the art can benefit from added space. I would rather see less of it until such time that the museum finds a solution. But don't let that stop you from enjoying the exhibits. Come prepared. Expect crowds during summertime.
We went to see the mummies exhibit and it was fantastic! Took advantage of half price Wednesday nights
Amazing exhibits, great experience. R commended for families as well!
We went to see the Nepolean exhibition. It was breaking and the museum was beautiful, the staff were so friendly and helpful.
We went for the Therry Muegler (apologize for sp) exhibit, which was freakin' amazing!
The buildings themselves are beautiful. The permanent exhibits are pretty good and the temporary exhibits can be fantastic. It's not necessarily cheap, but one ticket gets you into every exhibit, so that's nice there aren't any hidden charges
Lost a star because I visited 2 years ago and entrance was free, whereas not it costed $16. This museum has exhibits for everyone, from renaissance to modern art. The museum is also quite large. Even though I visited 2 years ago and spent quite a while perusing the museum, I still managed to see many all new exhibits this time around. Worth a visit when coming to Montreal.
Great museum! We were so luck for getting the Napoleon Bonaparte exhibition, it was a wonderful experience. The museum is very large and it could be a good idea to take at least half day over there.
Amazing museum. Lots to see and well worth the membership plus guest we purchased. Have been able to take a couple of friends. Our kids love exploring all the different exhibitions.
Great exposition of Riopelle, only drawback is the setup of the museum. Would have been nice to exit the museum instead of having to go down 2 floors down, cross under the street and then back up on the main floor to leave the premises
Parking is very hard to find but the museum is awsome! I went to see Love is Love by Jean-Paul Gaultier so this is only one room.
Really worth visiting if you are in Montreal. I had a really enjoyable time.
I liked it. Photo worthy areas. Very neat
The Thierry Mugler exposition was super enjoyable! It's so interesting to see the different types of style from different eras with so many diverse materials. Definitely an exposition you have to visit!
Post-pandemic advise: If you are under 30, please take advantage of the affordable membership giving you unlimited access to the museum and more! *pre-pandemic picture from the night at the museum event. Was fun!!*
Amazing. Well laid out over 5 buildings. Staff were helpful and lovely.
I loved it! I enjoyed Picasso's exhibition and it was an amazing experience.
Lovely art museum. Well layout base on period and type of arts. Lots of descriptions to the painting, and did i mention great architecture? Museum giftshop is also a bookstore, I am sure the museum staff had hand picked some of the material sold in the gift shop. Visited it twice within my visit and did not regreat it (I am a slow museum viewer). Do not forget you can enter museum free if you are under 30. However I do highly encourage you to pay for the current picasso exhibit as it give you a lot of insight on what inspired picasso and his art (and i learned a lot) , and it also displayed different medium of art picasso had created.
Love this museum, huge creative decorations
My favourite museum by far. They have an extensive collection of exquisite art!! Would definitely recommend visiting if you’re in montreal!
We did not anticipate how much there was to do here. If you like walking around without reading or learning too much, 2-3 hours. If, like my wife and I, you feel the need to read and learn literally everything the museum has to offer, then you’d need 5-6 hours to get through it.
Large museum with extensive collections of various forms of art to behold. Definitely worth a visit.
It was just simply amazing and very immerssive! Seing the history of the egyptian era, the way of life, culture, ceremonies, etc..just aloud me to connect with the past in a way I never experienced. Thank you got showcasing elements of the past. Always dreamed of visiting the Egyptian pyramides, now I hot the chance to experience it. Deffinately recommend everyone to go see this well presented gallery.
Good museum with classical and contemporary art. I discovered some local artists I did not know. Nice visit.
Nice museum, friendly staff. Free under 21 years old. Free coat check. Cool architecture.
If you're young you can get in for free to check out multiple floors of Canadian art. It's great!
Lovely place for exhibits, comes in French and English for the non-biligual.
Extremely well organized..online tkts, staff available to usher you in and provide guidance. Several galleries , well documented information( English and French) on the artists ,genre, the period and influences...can easily spend half a day there. A must visit in Montreal.Parking is tricky and has to be found in the adjoining streets.
Nice gallery that isnt overly huge so you can get through it in a trip or two
Great place to visit if you like art or if you have time to kill! The main exhibition is open to everyone (free under 30 years old) and takes about 1.5h to complete if you take your time! Lots of meme potential in there.
Really loved this museum. They had a lot of different works and the set up was really nice throughout the floors. It is quite large as well as it connects into separate floors off of the main level which break off into their own levels with some permanent and temporary exhibits. Came up from Toronto and stopped in here, if you’re going to come more than once you should get the cheaper membership as general admission is $24 but the membership is $35 and it gets you into other museums.
Always a wonderful way to spend time with friends and family visiting the museum. Well situated downtown close to many great restaurants should you choose not to eat at the museum restaurant. Exhibits vary so keep an eye out on the schedule not to miss out but there is always the permanent collection to see through out the year
Thierry Mugler exhibition ends September 8th 2019. A very well executed exhibition.
Well laid out. Thought there were going to be classics too. Nice shop.
Great museum with excellent exhibits. It gets crowded on weekends, holidays and free museum days.
The Museum is huge. I spent 4 hours in there and I wasn't able to read everything cause I was tired already. But overall it was a nice experience.
Signac and the Indépendants is the only exhibition accessible to visitors now. Admissions can only be purchased online. It was my first time to visit, I would like to come back to check other exhibitions in the near future. Off site parking is available along the street. Traffic were controlled at the entrance, but showrooms were crowded even though it was 10 am
I‘m so into here!
Great pieces. I wish there was more explanation and sensitivity around how the Indigenous and African pieces came to be in the museum.
Some areas particularly local sculptures were of interest, others ,photographs etc, what were they about, find art is fine art. Photography is a hobby OK some people make money but this was( who knows). Does not blend or follow any pattern. OK if its raining outside.
it's always a pleasure to come to the museum. this is my second visit to the Jean-Paul Riopelle exhibit. there's always something new to see even if you have already seen the exhibit. in addition, there are new things elsewhere in the rest of the museum as well. I saw two new exhibits: an exhibit called Les Impermanants by Yann Pocreau and another one by Caroline Monnet called Ninga Mineh, that i particularly liked for its moving starkness. i also enjoyed Paul Walde's Requiem for a Glacier, a video of a marvelous musical piece played and sung on a glacier in British Columbia.
Complete rip of!!! So all classic art exhibitions are closed and some questionable art is on display. If museum does renovation, move your masterpieces to other pavilion for God's Sake!!! Shame, shame, shame!!! Brought kids from Toronto to see real European art, and got just pure **** on display!!! Shame on you, Museum!!!
An excellent art museum and I’m not normally much of a museum person. The collection of paintings in the Pavilion for Peace is the perfect size and very well-curated as to not be overwhelming but still be interesting. I especially enjoyed the modern art (which is extremely unusual for me) as well as the third floor Golden Age of Holland and Flanders. It’s an especially nice place to pass a few hours on a freezing winter day. I’ll definitely be back!
Large museum with a variety of art types. It is designed very well and entry is free but does not include admission to special exhibits which is $15 for adults. We went here to spend time before a concert we we're going to and we're surprised at how large it was and did not have time to see everything. Great location right near shopping and restraunt on St Catherine.
Great curation of different styles and time periods. The building itself offers incredible views of the city. Definitely a good place to walk around and immerse yourself in thought.
Pretty chill place when you have time on your hands or you just want to discover
The worst museum of arts! Avoid there if you have to pay to go in! Not worth the dollar.
lovely presentation of history and photography ,sculpture and paintings.well organized.free entry for under 20 years
Well worth the visit. Can easily spend 2+ hours here. Very visitor friendly, with helpful staff, lounging facilities and restrooms etc.
Always a wonderful way to spend time with friends and family visiting the museum. Well situated downtown close to many great restaurants should you choose not to eat at the museum restaurant. Exhibits vary so keep an eye out on the schedule not to miss out but there is always the permanent collection to see through out the year
Great Museum that has a fine permanent collection and almost constant stream of fabulous visiting exhibits. For some of those specials be ready to spend time in lineups, or, better yet, become a member and you skip all the lines, and get unlimited visiting.
Huge museum full of fantastic arts. From 1600s to 1900s, you can always find the ones you love.
One of my favorite museums experiences in many years. The collections and special exhibits are phenomenal. Our 18 year-old-son even enjoyed our day here!!
My favorite museum in Montreal. Great exibition, beautiful building, you must go here!
Awesome. Great way to enjoy beautiful art and reflect about ourselves, our forms of expression as humans and our place in the world.
Not much to see at Wednesday exposition but prices are cheaper than usual so I guess they kinda compensate for it. Just felt super small. Service was great though and extremely clean and well maintained
I really liked the fact that one could take pictures inside. Everything is in both French and English. The building opposite to it is also connected via the basement. It isn't quite possible to do justice to it in one day.
It's got a very few big name pieces like Rodin and Picasso, but mostly 2nd and 3rd tier offerings. The worst was a collection of rubbish done by the staff that took most of a floor. Save your money. A visit to Schwartz's would be more satisfying to the discerning.
This is an absolute must visit place if you like good art. We spent two days but one can manage in half a day too. Parking is impossible so use public transit. There is a path to the mount Royal from the museum but it can get a little too much to pack in a day for some.
I love visiting local museums when I'm traveling, been to many in Europe and Asia, and this exhibition was one of the worse when it comes to communicating to its guest. I left not only feeling disappointed, but extremely frustrated when I learned after leaving from OTHER reviewers that there were underground passages that lead to adjacent buildings with more artwork. Apparently, I had completely missed out on 75% of the exhibition (which I hear is amazing!) because there was no map, signs or the staff to help inform. Even the exterior of the adjacent building was confusing, the doors were sealed shut as it was closed with no signs telling you to cross the street to enter. I paid $50 (for two people) at the front desk and was left to figure the rest out. Visiting their website, I also don’t see any map that I don’t have to dig for. To realize the extent the lack of communication is that we once stood in their dark elevator having to guess which floors would work because there were no signs to let guest know which ones are closed. Overall, I took time out of my schedule to visit this place as it was highly rated, but I left feeling dismissed. I don’t like writing bad reviews, but reading other low stars reviews - I think other guest have had the same experienced I did without realizing it (notes are saying the museum was small) – it’s warranted.
This is a place where you won't be regret of investing time.
Wish that the website was a little clearer on the fact that not all the museum is open for visit. I bought tickets to go today for myself and my husband and was disappointed to find that the exhibits that we were interested in to see were not open. We don't like contemporary art...and that was mostly what was open so, we were not happy. I'm sure for those who like that type of art they would be pleased though. I just wish that the website would have said which of their permanent collections were not able to view...cause I would have saved my $45 or $50 :)
Great place to visit. I went late morning, so it wasn't that busy, but as I left art 15:30 there was a lot of queue to get in. The Egyptian exhibition was great. There are some surprising pieces scattered all over the museum, no matter what your taste in art!
Nice... Needs 6 hours minimum to do the tour of the three buildings.
Wide variety of artistic forms. Classics, Legends, New and Local.
Pretty good exhibit for a tourist spot. Didn’t have as much as I expected but still an awesome experience.
Amazing experience. Great collection of artwork! Free admission in December!
Came here on a free to visit day. I don't know a painting from a moldy wall, but the items in this place really blew me away at times. I only visited the main structure, and managed to spend 3 hours on the four floors here. Other than a section of confusing contemporary art, the first three floors are awesome, a few sculptures and paintings the first floor are the best! The top floor is boring as it mostly contains out-of-proportion paintings of Jesus doing various things.
Decent art museum, smaller then I expected as it's the main art museum in this city but not so tiny I felt ripped off. Nice range of art and okay temporary exhibits. In my city it's convention that, unless a museum searches your bag, you check it at the cloakroom. Apparently that's not how it works here, I tried to check a tote bag and the lady laughed at me which was... an interesting take on customer service.
There are several pavillions, and they usually have an interesting temporary exhibit.
Visited with family. Very good art exhibits and you can’t beat the price... free. Loved the artwork - especially the modern and Canadian. We love Group of Seven. Very impressive. Clean and lots of staff around. Need three hours at least. Highly recommended.
Really nice. Main exhibits closed during quarantine (for good reason) so I only saw a small portion of the entire museum.
went to check out the Thierry Mugler exhibition that's here only for a limited time ???? it did not disappoint! The Musée des Beaux Arts is a place for all ages to enjoy the art. When you buy tickets for the exhibition, it also includes admission for the general gallery, so you don't have to pay twice to enjoy both!
This place is amazing!!! EAT before you go and DRINK a lot of water .There are fountains throughout the buildings so don't bring water to load you down .Three buildings of glorious art, past ,current and beyond. I strongly suggest getting a map at the front door. The buildings are colour coded on the map to make it easier to navigate. Lots of bathrooms to use. Wear comfy shoes! You can check your jacket for a fee .
This place is a gem!!! Located in the heart of downtown, I got to immerse myself in culture and explore my own views through the lense of the artists. It was refreshing to an activity other than taking yet another walk with a friend. To be honest the limited entry set due to covid made for an ambiance to truly enjoy each collection without over crowding. It was peaceful. The works were enlightening. I bought the avant garde pass and I will be going back!!
World-class museum in the heart of Montreal.
They have closed all the major exhibitions ( as of July 2021). But they forgot to mention it on their site. At $24 per adult it is a total rip-off
Great free exhibit!
Wow, didn’t think I’d be a museum guy, those oil paintings are amazing, and make it look so real!! Wonder how good I’d look as an oil painting
Went on the first Sunday of the month and it turned out the exhibits were free. The art collection here is breathtaking and well curated. Beware of the wonky stairs. Considering it was a free entry day it wasn't too busy or crowded. This place is absolutely worth a visit!
Great place but I don’t understand arts, lay man!
Overall a very disappointing experience and collection. The staff were remarkably rude to us our entire visit. Be warned that you have to enter into the exhibition side (older building) within a half an hour of arrival, which no one told us. There are two entrances, so be careful of this. When we arrived (within the half an hour) we were literally chastised by a staff member for almost being late. We wouldn't have been if there were any indication of this rule! Their online booking system is a confusing and convoluted mess, also why aren't these expectations explained on the website? Their collections are overall disappointing, save for their collection of Canadian Nationalism which was lovely. However, this was a small section of the museum. I imagine it would be more worth the visit depending on what their visiting collection is, but at this time I would suggest patrons stay clear. I recommend you save your money and check out one of Montreal’s other museums.
The museum closes early so didn't go inside for such small amount of time ! Geez should be open till at least 7pm . So I checked out the srt sculptures around the building.????
Loved this museum. Could spend a lot of time here. Loved the Picasso exhibit.
T Mugler on display huge museum takes hours to get through but worth it
I found the facility to be very clean, welcoming and beautiful. Staff was helpful and kind regardless of my lack of French and despite it being very busy for a large event. The Museum was organized well for tourists or locals visiting. Close to shopping, food and other amenities. Other patrons enjoying the art were extremely respectful and quiet which helped me to enjoy the art that much more. Great experience overall.
Oh my god I had the best experience ever my son Tilo and my daughter Alexandra and his boyfriend had a blast so beautiful place I can wait to come back
Took my granddaughter and she loved it. So nice that kids are free.
As of July 2021 half museum is closed - no European and no modern art. That's I came for :( wasted 48 dollars...
If you are interested in the permanent collection, don't go right now as everything is closed. There is a Riopelle exhibit, which is good if you are interested in this particular artist, there is a small but high quality exhibit of Canadian art, and a small amount of contemporary art. I wish they had made clear on their website that the vast majority of the museum is closed because we wouldn't have bought tickets if we had known that. You can't see most of what is shown on the website, so the experience does not live up to what is advertised.
This museum is absolutely amazing and never ceases to surprise. They have new exhibits every 6-8 months and the permanent collection is superbe. I've been going for many years and I love to go back for special exhibitions and to re-visit their collection. This is an absolute must if you visit Montreal (or if you live here!).
Absolutely loved the Post-Impressionism. there was so much to look at, I would consider going back again. The museum took every precaution to ensure visitors safety, I was able to enjoy my time there worry free.
I was very unimpressed with how they advertised their free entrance to the museum. They were offering free entrance fee during Christmas break with their mummies exhibit as the picture for the advertisement of it being free. After driving downtown, paying for parking, then walking to the museum we find out the mummy exhibit is not free, but costs 24.99 each. I looked on the website before going and nowhere did I see there was an extra cost for this exhibit. I'm sure it's there somewhere, but it is hidden very well. I was very unhappy and wanted to turn around and leave. However, my fiancé was really looking forward to seeing this exhibit, so we paid the $50 and went anyways. Once inside, there were so many people that it was hard to take time and really appreciate everything. To me this was a complete waste of money, I only give 2 stars because my fiancé did enjoy the exhibit.
Awesome collection!! One ticket for over 5 museum, very good price. It would be good if the ticket would be valid for 2 days because there is too much to see in one day!
